Sunshine State residents, do you recognize this little neighbor? It’s the Florida softshell turtle (Apalone ferox)! Unlike many turtles, you might find this critter darting about on land or swimming rapidly in water. Its hydrodynamic, flattened shell, and four strongly-webbed feet help it to move swiftly. Softshells stick mostly to water and have long necks and snouts that they poke above the surface, like a snorkel, to breathe. Juveniles have more contrasting color patterns than adults: their carapace, or shell, can be olive, tan, or light brown with spots and a yellow rim.

Note
Indirana surely must be counted as among the strangest of frogs, as their tadpoles live on land
You are not kidding, they are really, really weird.

Last night while making a lecture for my class, I learned about these fluffy little nightmares.
Meet the blind mole rat. It spends its life underground, where it eats roots and burrows by chomping the ground with its huge teeth.
Their eyes are super small and covered in a layer of skin (yeesh). Their eyes can't form pictures in the same way ours can, BUT! They are able to detect the magnetic field of the earth- this is called magnetosensation! This is not an x-men skill, just a thing a little burrowing weirdo evolved. Sick.

PART 1 | POLL 2
SHRIMP TOURNAMENT!!!
(make sure to read info on both contenders before voting! some information may be hidden under "read more"!!)
MAGNIFICENT ANEMONE SHRIMP (Ancylomenes magnificus)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA: N/A
like many cleaner shrimp, magnificent anemone shrimp are well known for their symbiotic relationship with other sea animals such as sponges, mollusks, fish, and others of the like! on top of that, they also rely on other organisms to live safely due to being quite vulnerable, and are often found residing within sea anemones and stony corals, making the symbiotic relationships come full circle. another unique feature of this shrimp is their patterning- their bodies being mostly transparent, yet contrasted with opaque white stripes and patterns, giving these shrimps quite the interesting appearance!
-
HARLEQUIN SHRIMP (Hymenocera picta)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AKA: N/A
these bizarre shrimp are well known for their alien, nearly plant-like appearance, making them one of the most visually unique shrimp species out there! depending on where they're from, harlequin shrimp may have different color spots, which can range from all sorts of reds, blues, and purples. these fierce little guys mainly feast on starfish, and many will travel in pairs to ambush and gang up on their prey. they are masters at flipping over these starfish and do so with ease to gain access to their soft tissues. they'll also (begrudgingly) go for sea urchins if there's no available starfish in the area.

Welcome to the Weird Animal Tournament!!
Tumblr media
Submissions CLOSED!!
Seeing all the Tumblr tournaments made me want to make my own, for one of my favourite topics, nature’s freaks!! This is intended to celebrate natural diversity and the huge variety in the animal kingdom - the weirder the better!!
Submission details
Animals must be real - no cryptids!
Prehistoric animals are allowed, so long as they have widely agreed upon features or appearance
Don’t skew submissions by submitting the same thing multiple times
“Weird” has many meanings here. They can be very evolutionarily distinct from other animals, just look weird, have very unique behaviours, or just have Freak Vibes™️!
All genres of animals are allowed, so long as they are definitely animals! Ur microscopic babies count :)
Please try to be specific with submission names, since some common names are quite vague. Scientific names will be super helpful in those cases!
You can submit multiple different animals!
Since I don’t know how many submissions I’ll get, I haven’t decided how big the bracket will be. I’m just going to take submissions until they generally stop coming in, or until the amount is the limit of what I could deal with easily.
Submit a creature here!
Blogs who I think might be interested (sorry for being annoying sob):

The Colugo: these mammals are able to glide through the air using a fur-covered membrane that stretches across their bodies; as a baby, a colugo that has not yet learned how to glide on its own must cling to its mother's belly instead
Tumblr media
These critters are often referred to as "flying lemurs," though they aren't actual lemurs. Genetic studies have indicated that they are among the closest living relatives of primates, occupying a sister group.
Tumblr media
Colugos are native to the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, where they are traditionally divided into two extant species: the Philippine flying lemur (Cynocephalus volans), which resides in the Southern Philippines, and the Sunda flying lemur (Galeopterus variegatus), which can be found in parts of Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
The fur-covered membrane that stretches across the colugo's body is known as a patagium; a similar membrane can be found in other gliding mammals (e.g. flying squirrels, sugar gliders, mahogany gliders, etc.) but the patagium of the colugo is uniquely extensive, surrounding almost all of the animal's body margin and stretching even between the tail and hind legs.
Tumblr media
When they are not actively gliding, female colugos often pull their tails up against their bellies, effectively curling the patagium into a pouch in which they can carry/protect their young. When gliding, however, the mother must fully extend her patagium, meaning that she has to unfold the pouch and allow the baby to curl itself around her torso (and hold on tight) befor she can begin gliding.
Tumblr media
Colugos have a more extensive patagium (and therefore possess more "wing space") compared to other gliding mammals, which enables them to glide much further. There is at least one documented case in which a Sunda colugo was observed gliding across a distance of 145 meters -- nearly the length of three Olympic-sized swimming pools. Another study also indicates that this species is able to glide a total distance of 1,342 meters per night (and can climb a total of 320 meters up into the trees in order to do this).
These critters also have extremely strong claws, and the soles of their feet are able to mimic suction-cups to help them maintain a tight grip on tree trunks and branches. Colugos are most active at night, and they are strictly herbivorous, feeding only on young tree leaves.
Tumblr media
I don't normally feature mammals on my blog, but this one in particular seemed too heartbreakingly adorable and too weird for me to ignore. I mean, look -- it's like a tiny dinosaur wrapped in a Snuggie!

Cetomimidae or Flabby Whalefish
When transitioning from their juvenile form to their adult form, male Whalefish lose their mouths, esophagus, and stomachs! Their jaws fuse closed and they rely on the food they ate as juveniles in adulthood. It's believed this evolved due to little food resource in their habitat- the deep sea.

Snoot boopers, this one’s for you! Meet the duck-billed tree frog (Triprion spatulatus). Found on Mexico’s Pacific coast, this species inhabits altitudes of up to 1,640 ft (500 m). Arboreal and primarily nocturnal, it feeds on invertebrates including crickets, grasshoppers, and spiders. Scientists have observed this critter using its shovel-like head to plug the openings of its burrows, guarding itself while it rests inside, which is why it’s also known as the shovel-headed tree frog.

“Visit earth” they said. “It‘s a xeno-zoologist’s dream” they said.
That place is just too weird.
They’ve got birds that fly underwater.
Air breathing mammals that live in the deep oceans.
Fish that walk on land.
Birds that can’t fly.
Mammles that CAN fly!
Insects that consume heavy metals!
Mushrooms that eat radiation! ZARKIN MUSHROOMS!
Don’t even get me started on that continent they call Australia.
And I don’t think any of the gods, both old and new, could explain what the zark this thing is supposed to be!
