Leviathan
nobody ever talks about Livyatan Melvillei (named after the biblical Leviathan and author Herman Melville), my favourite murder-whale:
Tumblr media
this fellow, with the teeth, comes from an extinct group of sperm whales that scientists refer to as "mega-raptorial" or "hyper-predatory", because they're not allowed to call them "the bloody-jawed terrors of the ancient deeps".
but I can.
look at that skull, those jaws. those teeth are the largest of any toothed predator ever. that guy ate everything.
Livyatan shared an ocean with Otodus megalodon, but Livyatan was only a bit smaller*, was smarter (I can't find exact figures, but a brain maybe 4-5 times the size of a human), and if they hunted in packs like orcas - they're so big that they probably didn't, but MY GOD - then even somewhat-grown megalodon could have potentially been on the menu.
* the exact size of megalodon is uncertain! Livyatan was likely almost as big as a modern sperm whale.
but mostly Livyatan would have fed on baleen whales, and assorted smaller prey. and it would have needed to eat a LOT.
in modern sperm whales the spermaceti organ (melon) that fits in the weird scoop visible on the top of the skull can produce focused sonar waves louder than a jet engine - potentially loud enough to harm or even kill a human diver. the organ and the surrounding skull are also structured to allow ramming attacks - pissed-off sperm whales have sunk boats five times their own mass. Livyatan didn't have as impressive a dome, but would still have had powerful echolocation, and also appears to have had adaptations for ramming, because I guess that sometimes it got bored of murdering with its teeth alone.
tl;dr we are only able to go in the oceans because the rightful owners died out at the end of the Miocene when they ran out of things to murder. also we should probably be nicer to our contemporary sperm whale species in case they ever decide to evolve back.

In the water, their ideal element, I must say these animals swim wonderfully thanks to their flexible backbones, narrow pelvises, close-cropped hair, and webbed feet. Resting on shore, they assumed extremely graceful positions. Consequently, their gentle features, their sensitive expressions equal to those of the loveliest women, their soft, limpid eyes, their charming poses, led the ancients to glorify them by metamorphosing the males into sea gods and the females into mermaids.
I don't disagree that seals are lovely creatures, but I'm still feeling a little defensive of the poor dugong. Why don't all the mermaids get such nice descriptions?

sorry to bother you, but….
if statled jelly!niel stings, does sleeping jelly!niel sting? Because it seems to be a conscious effort for niel to not sting? Or did I misunderstand this?
what are the scientific implications of sleepy jelly cuddles?
Great question! Thank you for letting me put on my more beach-appropriate baseball cap and do more mer research hehe
So I asked the shark and he told me to mind my business I think.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately for him, the manta ray will spill just about anything in exchange for pretty human stuff and I am great at taking notes.
Basically? It seems to me like it’s expected touch vs unexpected, combined with the jelly’s maturing self-awareness. When it’s younger, a jelly mer will start getting control of its sting by ‘turning it off’ consciously. As they get older, it can become closer to “will not sting unless actively startled or for good reason” as the jelly chooses! Think of the sting response like a knee-jerk, throwing-elbows response. Anything less startling isn't worth the effort. Or in jellyneil's case, maybe more of a nervous person's flinch response.
So at this age when jellyneil is awake, it generally won’t sting unless really startled - unfortunately for most mers, the poor thing is a little jumpy and most unexpected touches are startling 🥲
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When jellyneil is asleep, there’s more of a “base state” idea happening - however it goes to sleep is how it’ll peacefully stay. So if it falls sleep with someone else touching it, no stings! If it falls sleep in traditional jelly fashion (wedged between rocks or otherwise anchored down) the tentacles and stingers are instinctively in defense mode and I cannot advise getting too close.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If it gets startled awake though? I can only assume it would sting then as well but I can't tell you for sure because the whale and the one shark twin are usually very good about not letting that happen.
There’s some point to be made here about the fact that the stinging is only ‘turned off’ while cuddling/sleeping on other mers - clearly, brushing up against rocks doesn’t desensitize the stingers to other outside stimuli. In open water, the sleeping jelly knows to fend for itself. The presence of another mer seems to be instinctively calming.
But I am not here to wax poetic about it, that’s your job, I just provide the research 🤲

FINALS: WOBBEGONG VS WHALE SHARK
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some facts about our contestants!
Wobbegong:
These guys walk! They can use their fins to move on the ocean floor and have been found moving like this between tide pools
They are nocturnal predators and their pattern is an amazing camouflage that allows them to ambush their prey
They make friends with each other :) Spotted wobbegongs gather with each other, and not at random, or for food or protection. It's been show they have preferred partners (friends!!!!)
Whale shark:
They are the largest fish in the world reaching over 40 feet/12.2 meters
Their patterns are entirely unique and can be used to recognize induviduals!!
A study suggests these fellas might live up to 130 years

WELCOME TO THE FISHERMAN FIGHT!!
I like fish. presumably, if you're here, you also like fish. or your blorbo probably does. but do they like fish more than everyone else's blorbos?? stick 'em in this tourney to find out!!

criteria for submissions:
- if the character fishes for, like, their job or their survival or whatever then they're automatically eligible
- if it's not for their job or survival, but it's established that they do it relatively regularly anyway, they're automatically eligible
- characters who just fish occasionally, or like Once, have a good chance of being included based on if the fishing is somehow important (or if i think they're cool)
- player characters from video games with fishing mechanics/fishing minigames are automatically eligible
- i won't be pedantic about the scientific definition of Fish. a character who hunts for sharks or sea monsters or whales or whatever is still good to go
- no real people, fictional characters only (unless you can make a funny and/or compelling case for why they, an objectively Real Person, should be considered a character, like the person who submitted jeremy wade from river monsters)
- don't know if it's necessary to say this, but the submissions so far have been overwhelmingly men, so: anglers of all genders are welcome! i am using "fisherman" as a vague gender neutral term
other rules and stuff:
- i reserve the right to exclude any submission from the tourney based on my own personal judgment. most submissions will probably be included though
- you can submit multiple characters but only submit each one once
- propaganda about the characters is not only allowed but ENCOURAGED. throw it in my askbox or the tag #fisherman fight 2023

It's the finalists time, which one will win? Our big mouth filter feeder or our pretty refined Epaulette? It's up to you.
Whale Sharks (Rhincodon typus) can possibly have a big regeneration hability, probably even repairing part of its fins, even it's spots can reform after an injured area. The teeth of this shark is completely vestigial, since it plays no role in eating. Not only is the Whale Shark the biggest fish, but it also had the deepest recorded dive of any fish, going down at 1,928 metres (6,325 ft).
Epaulette (Hemiscyllium ocellatum): they're funny sharks, surviving in low oxygen by increasjng the blood supply to its brain and shutting down non-essencial braincells, they usually waddle along the reef instead of swimming, the maximum size reported was just 1,07 meters (3.5 feet). They're harmless to humans.

Heya! I have a couple questions about Oardivia.
1. Do Oardivians face functionism in some shape or form? Such as a mech with an Orca based alt-mode being denied to work in “higher classed fields”?
2. Are we allowed to make mentor ocs with charges? I know you mentioned a while back that there were less creations of charges but I’m not sure if we’re allowed to make ocs that are still being mentored.
3. How long are charges mentored? Are they mentored for two kilocycles like in IDW2, or is it a longer/shorter period of time?
4. Are Oardivians with bird based alt-mode able to travel down to lower levels? Mainly Epip and Meso? (I wouldn’t expect Bathys or Abysso.)
Sorry for all the questions but Oardivia is so interesting to me!! I’d really like to make an oc without doing anything disrespectful to your work.
1.
Oardivian functionalism is something I’ve thought about here and there, but not in depth yet. It would definitely be very different from traditional Cybertronian functionalism, there isn’t really a high/low caste alt mode like a microscope vs. tank. Appearance and origin is what often differentiate high class citizens from low class, high class being more fancy and delicate looking and low class being more plain and solid. Consider Royal Blue’s design (politician and Oardivia’s Leader raised in the rich city Meso) compared to Razorfin(ex-bodyguard from a not very impressive/rich background, raised in Abbyso). Both have whale altmodes, but are seen very differently due to their backgrounds and looks. Even if Razorfin was a well trusted guard with a friendly/selfless disposition, he was seen as lesser than other guards of more noble backgrounds, especially given that he was Royal Blue’s guard, which really didn’t help him. “A stain beside a pearl.”
Functionalism in Oardivia is still of course based on what each kind of altmode is capable of. For example, most race teams refused anyone that didn’t have a dolphin altmode. No sharks, no birds, no seals and certainly no whales.
It’s only relatively recently (within the last few centuries) that the first race team of whales was assembled, but even then, the only kind of whale that can join are fin whales.
This is only one of potentially many examples, but I may talk more about it if asked or if anyone wishes to share ideas and concepts on this topic. It’s not exactly a pleasant bit of lore, but still interesting to tackle and explore.
2.
Yes! Mentoring an Oardivian may take many many centuries. By this point charges that are still heavily dependent upon their mentors are very few. If you are still unsure, please feel free to contact me so that we can work things out for your ocs! :>
3.
Firstly, I wasn’t aware that it took 2 kilocycles (that’s 2000 years, yes?) for a cybertronian to be mentored! Nice to know!
The length of time one is under mentorship can vary a bit, but it can take a bit longer than than 2 kilocycles. Perhaps 3 or 4. Oardivians spend a lot of time learning and then perfecting various skills and abilities, and they can have many. Nearly half of most of your average Oardivian’s talents involve music, from various instruments to styles of singing. These things take a lot of time and effort to perfect.
4.
Those with flying bird altmodes don’t often travel below Meso, as they’re not as efficient swimmers as diving birds like penguins, who can travel down as deep as Abbyso if they so desire. Not many do desire to, so birds of any sort are pretty much never seen in Abbyso, while they’re a very rare sight in Bathys. Meso actually has a few residents with bird altmodes, such as Senator Crest Silver, though these individuals are rich high class mechs.

Annakacygna vs Nasidytes
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Factfiles:
Annakacygna hajimei, A. yoshiiensis
Tumblr media
Artwork by @otussketching, written by @zygodactylus
Name Meaning: Swan from Annaka (Hajime’s or of Yoshii-machi)
Time: 11.5 million years ago (Tortonian stage of the Miocene epoch, Neogene period)
Location: Haraichi Formation, Annaka, Japan
Annakacygna was dubbed during its research “the ultimate bird”, and honestly, I don’t even blame the scientists for doing so - I may have even done the same. Both large species of swan, A. hajimei was about the size of a black swan, and A. yoshiiensis was larger than even the mute swan. They were weird in so many ways it boggles the mind: they were adapted for filter feeding in the water, their wings and tails were so flexible they could form a cradle for their young on their backs like modern mute swangs, said tails and wings were probably great and flashy display structures, its head was extremely large weird looking and had a slightly spoon-like bill, they had wide and heavy vertebrae but still had long and flexible necks, it may have even been a flightless bird or at least a poor flier based on its sternum and coracoids, though its scapula is extremely strong and unlike flightless animals - more research is needed to better understand this aspect of its mobility. That said, it did have very short wing birds, weirdly curved and short among birds, with weirdly shaped finger bones coming together to create weirdly formed curved wings. Its hips were arched up, creating a dip in its back, and it had narrow leg bones, allowing for efficient movement in the water like living *grebes and loons*. So while it had this whole weird display structure with its wings and tail going on, and its robust but long neck, and that strangely boat-shaped body (what the actual f-), it was zooming through the water like a grebe or loon. It had a similar beak to living shovelers, possibly, and it could move its jaw back and forth in a seesaw like motion, not like any living swans. It could then filter food through its jaws via this motion, eating a variety of plankton through soft lamellae within its bill. It was probably very social, given its display structures, and communicated both vocally (imagine the power of those calls with that robust neck) and visually. Annakacygna also took care of its young, extensively, keeping them on their back protected in their wings, to the point that they may not have spent much time on land (like living loons and grebes). It wasn’t a deep diver, but was stable at sea while foraging on food and moving along the surface of the water, living primarily in the ocean. Found in a marine environment, Annakacygna lived with sharks, seals, many kinds of whales, and desmostylians.
Nasidytes ypresianus
Tumblr media
Artwork by @otussketching, written by @zygodactylus
Name Meaning: Ypresian Diver of Naze
Time: 55 million years ago (Ypresian stage of the Eocene epoch, Paleogene period)
Location: Walton Member, London Clay Formation, England
Nasidytes is the earliest known loon known via the fossil record, similar to other early fossil loons known from later times. It had a shorter and wider beak than living loons, and it had pleurocoels like most birds but unlike modern loons. It already had the weird wing proportions found in modern loons, and it had webbed feet similar to many water birds. Nasidytes probably wasn’t an aquatic pursuit predator, like its living relatives. Instead, it probably fed on marine invertebrates, making short foot-propelled dives for food. It lived near the coast, in a vibrant habitat filled with a wide variety of other early birds emerging right after the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. The London Clay Formation was an early tropical coastal forest, much like those found in Southeast Asia today. Some of Nasidytes’ neighbors included Danielsavis, a weird duck-screamer; diurnal raptors including the masillaraptorid Danielsraptor; early relatives of owls, trogons, paleognaths, and tropicbirds; the pseudotoothed bird Dasornis; and a wide variety of parrot-passerine relatives. Crocodilians, snakes, turtles, fish, sharks, and a few mammals also lived in this environment, including an early primate Platychoerops.

HIS DICK FELL OFF?? (The Vanishing Of Brenner’s Cock- What Happened To It?)
So, welcome to yet another insane post. Long story short, I’m wondering if Brenner’s schmeat got butchered.
Tumblr media
So, this all started out when I was sitting here thinking about James’ Mothergate post (and I’ve got some posts here about mothergate & one in particular about Mothergate and The Fly that connects to this current post) and wondering why Vecna has all of these times that he appears as women & all of this mother coding, but that same feminine coding isn’t present for Henry/Edward as a child or in the lab.
And then, I was sitting here thinking about the idea of Brenner trying to combine himself with Henward in order to try and get regen healing (which you can see posts such as this post, this post, this post, and this post) and Vecna being the result of that, and then it hit me:
Is Brenner the reason why that “female” imagery is present for Vecna but not for Henward pre-Vecna?
Brenner also acts weirdly reverently towards the vagina-shaped gates :
Tumblr media
And as James @henrysglock pointed out to me, there’s also a Lilly Brenner in Insidious:
Tumblr media
But if Brenner DID lose his dick, HOW did he lose his dick?
Well. I hate typing this just as much as you’re going to hate reading it, but. When the Demogorgon knocks Brenner over in S1, when we look at how he was knocked back:
Tumblr media
Versus the Demogorgon’s position when it starts chewing:
Tumblr media
It’s too close to the camera to be chewing on Brenner’s head the way that the S4 Demogorgon does with the prisoners- but it’s RIGHT in the perfect place to be chewing on Brenner’s other head.
And when I brought this up to James, he mentioned the 3 legged Papa drawing vs the 2 legged Papa drawing- which, if Brenner had lost a “leg”, makes sense- however, the 2 legged drawing is technically from 1979 and is therefore before the 3 legged drawing, but the 3 legged drawing is shown to the audience first in the show. So either way, there’s Something here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And speaking of legs, we also have all of the Jaws references in ST, and specifically, the Demogorgon being compared to a shark:
Tumblr media
And what does this have to do with legs? Well, Jaws was inspired by Moby Dick- Moby Dick, where Captain Ahab’s leg was bitten off by a whale/Jaws being inspired by that with sharks.
Versus Brenner’s dick being presented as a third “leg,” in the drawing, and it possibly having been bitten off by the Demogorgon, which, again, is compared to a shark.
And I talked here about how the Brenner that we see in S1 is very very likely Richard Brenner, not Martin Brenner- Richard, whose name is literally short for “Dick.”
Brenner also seems to really overcompensate when it comes to masculinity.
For example, he’s got his cock coat scene:
Tumblr media
And he forces the lab children to call him “Papa”:
Tumblr media
And if we REALLY want to stretch things, there’s a young trans girl named Morgan Brenner in the 1994 tv show, “ER.” Which, interestingly enough, she shares that name with a girl in iCarly of all things, also named Morgan Brenner. And speaking of iCarly vs ST, Fred Benson in ST also shares a name with as Fred Benson from iCarly.
Plus, we also have the idea that one of the Henwards during NINA is Brenner/a Henward that got combined with one of the Brenners, which, considering all of the castration references that surround Henward/the castration vibes with Soteria that Stav pointed out…
Long story short: something weird is going on inside of Brenner’s pants and with the female imagery in ST regarding Brenner.
