Something I find so confusing about Gabriel's portrayal in fic is when the author completely ignores that he. kills people. Killing people as a hobby was like a core part of Gabriel's character at one point but soooooo much fic will just not acknowledge it at all? Like it's okay for him to act however he needs to act for the story but either he's not killing people and there's a reason for it (implied or directly stated) or he is killing people but we're choosing not to focus on that and both of those things are going to impact his character and the story in some way.

#im not saying the story needs to be grimdark automatically either #just keep in mind who gabriel is. his history #sure he can be a sweet guy if he likes you but thats just one of his facets #gabriel is fun but he's not inherently a wholesome character #gabriel spn #supernatural

i know the whole reason mary likes john in the first place (according to 4x03) is that he’s the opposite of everything a hunter is and she wants nothing more than to get out of the life. so what if in the prequel...that’s exactly the reason the angels have to intervene? in the Real past (the one the prequel is presenting) john gets involved in the hunting world and is obsessed with learning abt his father’s past and carrying on his legacy. so what if, since mary wants out of the life, she doesn’t fall for john (who’s very adamant abt staying in the life) and instead she falls for someone else. someone normal. but, that’s not the way the story’s supposed to go! so the angels learn that they need to keep john in the dark abt hunting, need to make him the perfect, polished, goody-two-shoes kind of guy so mary’ll fall for him. they scrub john clean, reset the timeline, and we get the version of the past from spn 4x03. but, that porcelain doll john winchester is not who he Really is. he’s impulsive and obsessive and stubborn and selfish. and slowly bits and pieces of his true self break thru and that’s why they have a rocky relationship and their marriage was never perfect and they fight and john walks out on his family a few times. because he was never the perfect wholesome guy mary thought he was, he was just edited by the angels to make sure everything fell into place just right 

#rewatching 4x03 really made it so stark how different young john is from later john #and made me realize the prequel's john is actually....more asshole-y than matt cohen's john like i can see the seeds of who he will become #whereas matt's john is just a little *too* perfect and wholesome #it's funny too bc ppl were complaining so much abt how the prequel was retconning john and making him all nice and sweet #when matt's john is like. thee preppy nice perfect boy next door #anyways. just some thoughts post-rewatch #vics spn rewatch #vic.txt #spn prequel
