Summary:Nie Huaisang knows that things in this world are rarely story-shaped. That they're more akin to ink spilled on parchment - Messy and unpredictable and rather tragic. But out of all the threads he's woven throughout damn near a decade, he had not expected the most straightforward of his ploys to go this awry. He had not expected Wei-Xiong to end up here in Qinghe, half-drunk and too thin with no Lan Wangji in sight. Because it turns out that on his way to becoming the Chief Cultivator, the great Hanguang-Jun had left Wei-Xiong on the side of the road to walk alone in a world that most probably still wants him dead. What else could Huaisang have done other than bring Wei-Xiong home with him?

Kay's comments: OK. So. I don't really buy this narrative that at the end of CQL, Wei Wuxian left to find him himself, or because he needed to travel and heal. Instead, I'm definitely team: Lan Wangji, what are you doing? You're giving the most mixed-signals! Pick up your soulmate and bring him home now, before he drinks himself into his second early grave! And on that note: this story is everything I ever wanted and I absolutely love it. It features Nie Huaisang finding Wei Wuxian, being sad and drunk after Lan Wangji left him by the side of the road, and deciding: fuck it, I'm taking him home! And of course, Wei Wuxian thrives in the Nie Sect, where he's given tasks and appreciated and allowed to teach and the cultivation sects hate to see it, but I love it. I live for it. All hail genius Wei Wuxian, my beloved. Eventually, Lan Wangji gets a stern talking-to too and all works out in the end, but of course, until then, we get to enjoy some delicious pining.

Excerpt: "So, where have your travels taken you so far, Wei-Xiong?" "Well, here and there," Wei-Xiong blinks slowly at the change of subject, accepting his newly-filled cup without question, "There's a lot of things to take care of once you're far enough from where the Sects give a fuck. Do you know there's a stretch of old Qishan Wen land that just goes unclaimed and the people without any Sect help at all? Right there, smack-dead between Lanling and Yunmeng. How many years has it been? It's crazy, really." And then it hits him. Why Wei-Xiong is here, in this dingy inn at the very borders of Qinghe Nie territory. Why it took his birds so long to catch any wind that the Yiling Laozu is wandering the land. Wei-Xiong, who wouldn't have felt welcome to go to Yunmeng after what his birds reported happened in the Yunmeng Jiang ancestral halls, who had been stabbed in the guts the last time he was in his nephew's Sect, and who had been the most hated figure in the Cultivation world when he died and when he was revived again. Nie Huaisang realizes, with the kind of swooshing emptiness he feels at particularly heartrending poetry, that Wei-Xiong is a man displaced in time with nowhere to go. That Lan Wangji had probably been the only safe place for him, up until Lan Wangji let him go to walk a world that most probably still wants him dead.

"Brother!"

Lan Xichen startles awake with the most un-Lan like mixture of a groan and a snore. He struggles to open his eyes to peer through the darkness of his bedroom. Maybe he falls back to sleep again...

"Brother!!"

The whisper becomes even more urgent.

Lan Xichen will die of a qi deviation before he reaches 40. And he's already getting crow's feet. He might get thinning hair around his temples, too, if his brother keeps this up. "What is it, Wangji?" He tries desperately to sound calm and sympathetic.

"He is consorting with evil!" Even in the dark, Wangji's voice sounds grim.

Against his baser instincts, Lan Xichen pushes away his blanket. Lamenting the lost warmth, he pushes himself up to sit up against his pillows. "Is it young master Wei again? What has he done this time?"

"He's apparently associating with.... with women of negotiable affection."

Lan Xichen prays for strength. "You mean prostitute?"

His brother probably nods in the dark. Xichen can only see a vague silhouette against the dakness in the doorway.

"Wangji, first thing first. Young master Wei doesn't owe you anything. He doesn't know any of your feelings. He has no obligation to spare them"

A small gasp from the doorway tells Xichen that he should consider himself lucky Wangji is too old to bite him. He regrets the harsh words that slip out of his tired mouth the moment he finishes uttering them. He pauses to soothe the sting, "Young master Wei has always been righteous and chivalrous. You must not believe in any stray rumour you come across."

"Then?"

Lan Xichen understands now. His brother didn't wake him up to ask for direction. He wants validation. He wants encouragement. Xichen sighs softly, "I think you should visit him in Yiling. See for yourself."

"..." The silhouette nods again before abruptly leaving, closing the door behind him.

Lan Xichen sighs again, dragging a tired hand across his face. Maybe if he goes back to sleep now, he can still get sufficient sleep to pretend to be somewhat well-rested in front of Uncle in the morning.

A shape beside him stirs, "What was that about?"

"Just doing my brotherly duty. Go back to sleep, my love." He lies back down before turning and pressing a kiss on the person's forehead.

"Your brother is .... repressed. Women of negotiable affection? Do you think he saw me?"

"I doubt Wangji was in a mental state to notice an elephant in my bed if I happened to have one. Good night."

The person opens his mouth to speak again, but Lan Xichen firmly hugs him and closes his eyes. It will be a long morning tomorrow.

I have class in seven hours. Instead of sleeping, I wrote this. Enjoy!

“Lan Zhaaaaaan!!! Look at me, look at me!!”

Lan Wangji steadfastly ignores Wei Wuxian who gives a big pout.

“Look at meeeeee!!!!”

Lan Wangji give a long, suffering sigh and turns to look at Wei Wuxian who grins and babbles about the adventures he went on throughout the day, despite his full day of classes. Lan Wangji waited for a moment and then said, “Continue your work.”

“But Lan Zhaaaan, my hands are about to fall off!! Can’t you show me some mercy, gege?”

Lan Wangji sighed. He was so ridiculous.

Lan Wangji liked him all the same.

[Huh.]

Lan Wangji twitched but went back to his work. He completely forgot about that voice in his head.

[Hey, Lan Wangji.]

What.

[Oh, don’t look so annoyed. I never asked to be in this situation!]

Lan Wangji schooled his face back to impassiveness as he remembered the night hunt he went on recently. It had been a relatively simple hunt, until the yaogui had escaped from its bindings and landed an attack on one of the senior disciples who had joined him that day. The attack was not fatal, but due to the nature of the yaogui’s power, had separated the disciple’s soul from his body. A soul that accidentally crashed into Lan Wangji and has been since possessing him. They didn’t try to get them separated but the concluded it would take time to separate them.

[Anyway, so. You like the kid, huh?]

Lan Wangji stayed silent despite the soul’s - Lan Lifang’s - pestering. He was distracted but for a few moments. It was enough time, however, for Wei Wuxian to pull a prank on Lan Wangji and illusory butterflies flooded his vision.

“Wei Wuxian!” Lan Wangji seethed.

Wei Wuxian laughed uproariously. “I finally got you to snap! Hahahahaha!!!”

[Wait a moment.] Lan Lifang said. [Wait a moment.]

But Lan Wangji could not hear him. He was too busy pushing Wei Wuxian out of the library.

In hindsight, he probably should have paid attention.

………..

A couple days later, Wei Wuxian was up to his antics yet again and Lan Wangji had about enough when Lan Lifang suddenly overtook his body.

[What do you think you’re doing??] Lan Wangji hissed.

Oh, be quiet, cousin. I’m getting you a lover.

[What???]

“Wei Wuxian, why do you tease me so?” He asked with Lan Wangji’s voice.

“Huh, because it’s so interesting to see your reactions of course!”

“You’ve gotten enough reactions from me. Why continue?”

“I, uhh, I don’t know? I just want you to keep showing me more sides to yourself!”

“Why?”

“Because I want to be your friend!”

Lan Lifang tilted his head to the side. “Then why does your behavior say something different?”

“H-Huh? What do you—”

“You’re always pushing my buttons. But I’ve never seen you do that with others. Is it because I’m quieter? Or….” Lan Lifang stared intensely at Wei Wuxian. “Because you like me that way?”

And to both Lan Wangji and Lan Lifang’s surprise, Wei Wuxian blushed a bright red.

“W-What are you talking about! Of course I like you!”

“I meant the way lovers like one another.” Lan Lifang sent a quick apology to Lan Wangji. “The way I like you.” Then he returned control to Lan Wangji.

You coward!!!!! Lan Wangji cursed in his mind.

[Good luck, cousin.]

In the end, it all worked out wonderfully. Lan Wangji managed to stammer his way through a proper confession (with guidance and encouragement from Lan Lifang) and was shocked to see his feelings were returned.

How did you know?

[Hmm?]

How did you know he’d return my feelings?

[It’s simple. Wei Wuxian’s behavior is so similar to when boys pull the pigtails of a girl he likes. He always wanted your attention on him whether it be good or bad. And….] He trailed off.

And?

[I’ve seen him staring at your muscles.]

…Ah.

Out of curiosity, during a sparring session, where it was acceptable for Lan disciples to dress lightly, Lan Wangji openly flexed his muscles when Wei Wuxian came up to bother him. He watched as Wei Wuxian’s words stuttered to a halt as he stared, open-mouthed, at Lan Wangji’s biceps.

Huh. It seemed what his cousin said was true. Lan Wangji would thank him later for bagging him the love of his life.

After he throttled him of course.

wei wuxian isn’t actually dead, he’s hiding in ghost city!

he accidentally finds out he can use his flute to make hua cheng do things because he is. in fact. also a ghost.

he doesn’t make hua cheng do anything too much at first, just joking around making him dance embarrassingly in public or flip off the wrong people.

and then in walks xie lian. hua cheng is insistent on being the self deprecating clueless lovely idiot we know him as.

wei wuxian decides to take it upon himself to be the #1 wingman ever and speed up the process by getting them together with the power of flute playing!

eventually hua cheng also convinces wei wuxian to return to the land of the living for lan wangji!

Can you tell me why you like Lan Xichen, if that doesn't bother you?

I know why the fandom at large like him, but I disagree very hard with the "N°1 Wangxian shipper, best wingman, the only person in this cast that has eyes" thing they've got going on because all of this is directly contradicted by canon, and I'm just not a fan of blissfully ignorant characters that are fine with staying blind to the faults of others depending on how convenient it is for them.

I may be exaggerating a bit, but his "You were his only mistake" speech while advocating and protecting and giving the benefit of the doubt to Jin Guangyao made me a little bit salty, and the implications as to how he participated/supported the siege and Lan Wangji's punishment didn't really help.

I usually enjoy your takes and often agree with you, so I figured I'd ask, maybe you'd provide some insight in his character that I missed?

I think part of this does simply come down to personally what type of person I myself am able to tolerate and want to see the potential of capability and being better. I do agree on with Wei Wuxian as he observes Lan Xichen's faith in Jin Guangyao, is that he unlike him was able to interact with memories of Nie Mingjue and the only reason he himself was able to believe that Jin Guangyao wasn't what he presented as. Lan Xichen isn't presented as a character to despise even in his ignorance which yes, is a factor of his one comfortable position, yet he is a kind simple man.

Simple kind men, are not meant to be politicians and should not be as they are easily manipulated. Yet the people that Wei Wuxian commends and listens to are simple, kind people. He understands very well where Lan Xichen himself comes from as a party close to Jin Guangyao and as an outside party to Wei Wuxian. They don't know each other, Wei Wuxian also is not a grudge holding person for slights against himself because they are wrong. Why would he himself care for what is not true? He knows who and what he is, whether it's liked by outsiders or not. He knows how to work with either reaction and is not sensitive to what is said about him, he also doesn't need others to take up that mantel in his stead, what he appreciates is those that trust in him as he is to support that.

Wei Wuxian also understands the casual misunderstandings perpetuated, some of which he did continue once he came back and hid for a time as Mo Xuanyu. He didn't think his unconscious love from when he was you g would reawaken, he WAS fucking around to disgust Lan Wangji to abandon him. He did not expect Lan Wangji to be caring and as loving as he was because the man hadn't so openly been anything like that in their youth.

Lan Xichen had the privilege of knowing this about Lan Wangji, hence his protectiveness and assumptions. While Wei Wuxian did not. It's a case of great misunderstanding on part of what Lan Xichen knew against what Wei Wuxian knows. As the audience we DO have a greater privilege than either of them because we get insights into both's actions and thoughts the other has no idea of. They are outside observers of the other.

Do I think Lan Xichen held a grudge towards Wei Wuxian either? No, but he was weary of Wei Wuxian's intentions to his brother given the outside view he had of them. Subconsciously yes we see that Wei Wuxian greatly loves Lan Wangji, but that is not apparent for Lan Xichen given the history he had seen. He had at one point thought a friendship with Wei Wuxian would be good for Lan Wangji who didn't ever seek companions, yet the only thing he was seeing and told was the hurt and struggle Lan Wangji struggled with. He had no investment or friendship with Wei Wuxian to think of other context.

Wei Wuxian also gets this, it is why he is terrified of the potential hurt Lan Wangji had been put through unintentionally because of himself and the assumptions of outsiders as well that influenced both of their hesitance to be open of their growing feelings, trust and love.

We all want to think of the best in those close to us. Wei Wuxian understands how that becomes so natural to the point of blinding yourself to the worst. It is what he did when it came to Jiang Cheng who continued to escalate his hate and actions towards Wei Wuxian who gave Jiang Cheng the benefit of doubt until he no longer could. And it is what Lan Xichen is faced with when it comes to the whole of Jin Guangyao's crimes exposed. Wei Wuxian was the perpetual stain and hurt for Jiang Cheng and did take the blame Jiang Cheng put upon him while reasoning with himself that Jiang Cheng had such a right and what good would it do for him to complain.

Lan Xichen trapped himself in the blindness of wanting Jin Guangyao to be reasonable in his choices in a very unfair world that condemned his class. He did know that Lan Wangji loved Wei Wuxian, he was weary of that love due to not knowing the whole. And why at the end he is disgusted, horrified, hurt in his own self snd yes embarrassed with his stubborn assumptions and blindness. He is not proud of that and what he is torn up over at the end. It's not the great tragic friendship he supposedly lost, it is his own stubbornness and ignorance he let overcome him and what he allowed to go on for too long. He is forced to see his one sided idea of Wei Wuxian was wrong, he has no hate over that, he to a point had seen Wei Wuxian as an influence for Lan Wangji to open up, yet lost his own faith in that due to his assumed biases.

He to a fault is coddling to the point of it being offensively infantilizing to Lan Wangji. Wei Wuxian understands the why of this and also is completely logical in understanding as to why Lan Xixchen thinks as such. He thinks Lan Xichen is a good man, because he is, whether we the audience like it or not in the logic of their world Wei Wuxian understands the mechanism of Lan Wangji's punishment as well and the cruelty it was for the society they are stuck in that is slow to change. Simple kind men are not made to be in a world of intricacy and conspiracy because it is more complicated than they know. Good intentions and offer of protection is dangerous when you have not been exposed to cruelty that can personally hurt you and take advantage of you when you are ignorant to the extent of the backlash.

I think this is also why Wei Wuxian in the end does respect Lan Xichen he had been there as well. He can't condemn something that he had been a part of at one point and had been taken advantage himself by multiple others.

Xiantober 2023 - Day 8: Head Disciple!Xian

Word Count: 840 Pairing: Wangxian Tags: Lan Clan Wei Ying, competitive Wangxian, Lan Zhan not knowing how to handle his crush, wingman Xichen

Wei Ying rocked back and forth on his feet, his hands folded neatly behind his back as he waited with hidden interest for the results to be announced.

For the past three months, disciples had been working their asses off to prove themselves. They went on night hunts, tripled down on assignments, and busted their asses to show their shizuns that they were worthy of being more than just a normal disciple.

It was a stupid competition that the Lan clan had implemented some years ago after someone complained of favoritism. Each year, for three months, the disciples would go above and beyond. In the end, one disciple was chosen and marked as the head disciple for the remainder of the year. Ever since he was brought back to Gusu at the tender age of six, he always worked hard to prove himself to Lan Qiren. But he was still too much of a rule breaker to ever be considered one of the head disciples.

Once these ‘games’ started around the time Wei Ying turned ten, he decided he had no desire to participate, and only continued to do things as he always had. Sure, Lan Qiren often scolded him, but behind closed doors he was just as doting on him as he was with A-Zhan or Huan-gege.

So really, what reason did he have to participate.

That is, until Wei Ying turned 15, and he noticed that his favorite person in the world, A-Zhan, was acting differently with him. He often avoided him, often told him that he did not have time to ‘play’, or he would just fix Wei Ying with the same glare he always had.

This absolutely would not fly.

So he consulted the ever knowledgeable Huan-gege.

“Wangji has been the head disciple for several years now,” He reminded Wei Ying with a warm, knowing smile. One that told Wei Ying that the older boy knew more than he was letting on. “He is very busy, you know… and, I hear that Wangji is also… looking for a possible future partner. But no one seems to be able to stand up to par with his skills.”

“...What?” Wei Ying asked in disbelief. “A… a future partner?! A-Zhan?! My ZhanZhan?”

“Mhm. But of course, only those who are also head disciple material would be worthy of the second Jade, don’t you agree, A-Ying?”

“W-well, of course!”

Now, Lans were not supposed to gossip, but this truly was a dire situation, so Lan Xichen made an exception. He knew the real reason for Wangji avoiding Wei Ying, so he needed to rectify it.

He spread that very rumor around the young disciples. It needed to be believable for it to work. So when Wei Ying heard his fellow disciples talking about gunning for the top spot to prove themselves to the second young master, it got under Wei Ying’s skin and he had offhandedly commented to someone that he was planning on taking the games seriously this year, to which Wei Ying was met with laughter.

“Wei Wuxian, you’re not head disciple material! Besides, this year is important, so just sit this one out like always.”

Irritation bubbled under his skin, and Wei Ying took the bait.

No one was worthy of his ZhanZhan. And how dare they suggest that Wei Ying couldn’t do something!

A smug smile settled onto Wei Ying’s lips as the results were finally read.

First place in the mini tournament was Wei Wuxian, stunning everyone in the clan. Second place was Lan Wangji.

Wei Ying sidled up over to his runner-up and bumped shoulders with him, grinning ear to ear. “Say, Lan Zhan~ looks like we’re going to be working a lot together this year, but my score was ahead of yours! So that means you have to listen to me too~”

Lan Zhan’s ears burned a deep red and he glared at Wei Ying.

This was not how this was supposed to go! Lan Zhan wanted to maintain head disciple to impress Wei Ying! Perhaps this meant he would have to try harder next year. And he would secretly hold these moments of forced connection dear to his heart.

Unfortunately for Lan Xichen, who had orchestrated this whole plan to get his pining brother together with his beloved A-Ying, he had to watch for three more years as the two love-struck idiots went back and forth between who was head disciple, each year pushing themselves harder to impress the other until their emotions finally came to a head.

He signed in relief as Wei Ying finally dropped out of the running, happy enough to return to his state of goofing off and putting in just enough effort so that Lan Qiren didn’t Qi deviate after he learned that Lan Zhan preferred silly, goofy Wei Ying.

Though the rest of the clan was certainly not pleased as the two 18 year olds had a bad habit of keeping everyone up into the wee hours of the night after their feelings were finally known.

obviously obsessed with Wei Wuxian the prettiest little shit ever. He is nicknamed Bestie. I have a lot of feelings about him but mostly I think he is shojo manga heroine levels of wonderful and I love him for that.

Then we got Lan Wangji who has some of the BEST sass. I loved him in the drama because his acting was so good despite so few lines, but omg in the book is is AMAZING. The scene where they play tag bdsm style??? Obsessed he is baby. Also the novel makes me think he's ASD coded which makes me very happy yes.

His nickname is Boyfriend because of course. He is also shojo manga levels of heroine and hero and he rocks it. I will gift him many bunnies and ribbons to tie up wwx with sjsjfjjs.

I could watch them watch each other for hours ajdjjdjsjjd I'm usually good at not shipping real life people but god....please give me strength their bts videos are just sjfjkakfkks.

Then we get the other characters who all have important nicknames as well. Wen Ning is Puppy Bestie because he is a puppy. Im honestly in shock that his actor is actually one of the oldest cast members because um what????? This baby be 30+?????

I loved him and his sister so much and was so upset that her death was just like off screen????? Excuse me????? For my queen?????

I just realized I didn't give Nie Huisang a nickname oops but also i saw somewhere that his idea of faking incompetence so other people will get shit done is genius. I love him, I want to be him. Hence forth he shall be known as Girlboss Bestie.

I kinda hate myself for this but I also have a soft spot for Xue Yang. He's such a petty little piece of shit but also his crazy and evil vibes were just so good. I think I wouldn't have felt the same way if I read the novel version first instead if the drama, but god did I love the way this actor brought him to life. He is called Psychotic Bestie and he wears that title with pride.

This scene did so many things to me it must have been bait but yes twas I, the baited.

Would personally like to sue mxtx for the emotional abuse that was the Yi City arc thank you. Blissfully ignoring canon to say that the moment Song Lan left that city A-Qing and Xiao Xingchen came back to life from the power of gay vibes and found family alone thank you very much.

I am married to an intelligent idiot. And I love him so much.

As the title says, my husband is a genius. And I am not talking about booksmart only. He was a brilliant student who challenged the most seasoned of our professors. He's quick-witted, insightful, discerning, and very accomplished in his field. However, when it comes to me, he's as thick as two planks. And he's not doing this intentionally. I know him. He hasn't got a malicious bone in his body.

I have been in love with him since high school. I was a shy teenager and struggled to confess my feelings. My husband would tease me constantly. He'd ask me to join him and his friends in their escapades. But my natural shyness would prevent me from even speaking to him. My brother tried to play amateur matchmaker, but even he gave up trying to bring us together. I accepted my fate once we graduated high school.

But things improved once we entered university. As a last-ditch effort, brother asked him to keep an eye on me. Thus, my husband took on the role of my guardian. He would bring me food his sister made. He'd constantly call me. He bought me rabbits when he learned that growing up, I had no pets. I started to become hopeful despite myself. My husband seemed to accept my feelings and was reciprocating. He would sometimes tease me with other girls. But everyone told me that was his way to dig for my response.

We became official after I drunkenly confessed to him. I still remember the night. We snuck into an aquarium and laid down to look at the sting ray exhibit. With our fingers interlaced, I was feeling lightheaded, euphoric. I bought him chicken as per our traditional proposal. He smiled at me, then accepted them. I wanted to kiss him but waited because I wasn't sure if my drunk mind would remember the feeling of his lips on mine. We spent our final year being foolish, almost giddy in love. He'd tiptoe in my room to rest his chin on my head. We spent most of our time in the library where he'd steal a glance at me before hurriedly lowering his eyes. He made me forget all my regrets of not being more proactive at high school. After graduation, we took our relationship to the next level. We met each other's siblings before. But now we have met the parents. I was his plus one to his sister's wedding. My parents started to push for marriage gently.

My husband probably read the cues. He invited me to a trip. My brother-in-law joked that it would be my engagement trip. Instead, we eloped and got married. Our families made us go through a more formal ceremony anyway.

We have been married for the last 8 years. We have a beautiful baby boy together. Tonight, my husband came to me after putting our child to bed. He said he has been hopelessly in love with me since high school. All his teasing was efforts to gain my attention. He wanted me to see him, only him. And I did. What can I say? I wish we had spoken up sooner. But our time together nevertheless wipes out any trace of regrets that I can possibly have. Yes, I wish we were together sooner. But we ended up together anyway. He's an idiot. But how am I any better? Now I can sympathise with my poor brother, who had to see us, two lovestruck fools every day. Anyway, I never expected to write so much.
