💙 Story-Shaped
by lingering_song
T, 13k, Wangxian
Summary:Nie Huaisang knows that things in this world are rarely story-shaped. That they're more akin to ink spilled on parchment - Messy and unpredictable and rather tragic. But out of all the threads he's woven throughout damn near a decade, he had not expected the most straightforward of his ploys to go this awry. He had not expected Wei-Xiong to end up here in Qinghe, half-drunk and too thin with no Lan Wangji in sight. Because it turns out that on his way to becoming the Chief Cultivator, the great Hanguang-Jun had left Wei-Xiong on the side of the road to walk alone in a world that most probably still wants him dead. What else could Huaisang have done other than bring Wei-Xiong home with him?
Kay's comments: OK. So. I don't really buy this narrative that at the end of CQL, Wei Wuxian left to find him himself, or because he needed to travel and heal. Instead, I'm definitely team: Lan Wangji, what are you doing? You're giving the most mixed-signals! Pick up your soulmate and bring him home now, before he drinks himself into his second early grave! And on that note: this story is everything I ever wanted and I absolutely love it. It features Nie Huaisang finding Wei Wuxian, being sad and drunk after Lan Wangji left him by the side of the road, and deciding: fuck it, I'm taking him home! And of course, Wei Wuxian thrives in the Nie Sect, where he's given tasks and appreciated and allowed to teach and the cultivation sects hate to see it, but I love it. I live for it. All hail genius Wei Wuxian, my beloved. Eventually, Lan Wangji gets a stern talking-to too and all works out in the end, but of course, until then, we get to enjoy some delicious pining.
Excerpt: "So, where have your travels taken you so far, Wei-Xiong?" "Well, here and there," Wei-Xiong blinks slowly at the change of subject, accepting his newly-filled cup without question, "There's a lot of things to take care of once you're far enough from where the Sects give a fuck. Do you know there's a stretch of old Qishan Wen land that just goes unclaimed and the people without any Sect help at all? Right there, smack-dead between Lanling and Yunmeng. How many years has it been? It's crazy, really." And then it hits him. Why Wei-Xiong is here, in this dingy inn at the very borders of Qinghe Nie territory. Why it took his birds so long to catch any wind that the Yiling Laozu is wandering the land. Wei-Xiong, who wouldn't have felt welcome to go to Yunmeng after what his birds reported happened in the Yunmeng Jiang ancestral halls, who had been stabbed in the guts the last time he was in his nephew's Sect, and who had been the most hated figure in the Cultivation world when he died and when he was revived again. Nie Huaisang realizes, with the kind of swooshing emptiness he feels at particularly heartrending poetry, that Wei-Xiong is a man displaced in time with nowhere to go. That Lan Wangji had probably been the only safe place for him, up until Lan Wangji let him go to walk a world that most probably still wants him dead.
the untamed canon, post-the untamed, pov nie huaisang, chief cultivator lan wangji, inventor wei wuxian, genius wei wuxian, found family, qinghe nie sect, qinghe nie disciples, teacher wei wuxian, good friend nie huaisang, implied/referenced alcoholism, wangxian get a happy ending, wingman nie huaisang, not cultivation world friendly, cultivation sect politics, not jiang cheng friendly, mentioned character death
~*~

Lan Wangji: Ultimate Wingman
Sangcheng Month 2020
Day 6: Gusu Days
ao3
Nie Huaisang arrives on time for their scheduled teatime and promptly throws himself on the table almost knocking over the teapot. Nie Huaisang lets out a whimper Lan Wangji would call pathetic if he were a less generous person.
Lan Wangji pours the tea and waits for Huaisang to tell him what was wrong, taking a sip from his cup. It never takes long for Nie Huaisang to speak.
“Boys are so pretty,” Nie Huaisang says to the table, letting out another whimper. Lan Wangji silently agrees; boys are pretty (he tries not to think of one specific boy with a large smile).
“Is there a boy in particular?” Lan Wangji asks because Nie Huaisang doesn’t seem to want to do more than whimper at the table.
The whimpering stops, silence falls over the table as Nie Huaisang debates whether or not to tell him.
“Jiang Cheng,” Nie Huaisang finally mutters, sighing dramatically.
Ah, yes. Lan Wangji has seen Nie Huaisang making friends with Jiang Wanying (and also with Wei Ying which Lan Wangji tells himself he isn’t jealous over; lying is forbidden in Cloud Recess, but self-denial is not).
Nie Huaisang gets up from the table. There is a red mark on his forehead. He looks miserable.
“He’s just so pretty.” Nie Huaisang sighs even more dramatically.
Jiang Wanying is pretty, even Lan Wangji can see that (not as pretty as Wei Ying though Lan Wangji may be becoming biased; it’s a problem).
“I just want to kiss him so bad.” Nie Huaisang moans. “I’m a mess.”
Lan Wangji does not disagree with that assessment and pushes a cup towards Nie Huaisang; he could at least be a hydrated mess.
Nie Huaisang drinks the tea and returns his head to the table, hair cascading everywhere. Lan Wangji only barely manages to save his own cup.
He lets Nie Huaisang be and pours himself more tea.
He doesn't know how to deal with his own boy troubles let alone someone else’s.
Nie Huaisang is late. He is never late. Lan Wangji waits for him but the tea is getting cold and he starts to worry because Nie Huaisang is never late.
Lan Wangji gets up to look for him.
He goes to the most obvious places first. The Nie guest quarters, the part of the library where the poetry is shelved, the river where Nie Huaisang likes to paint. Nothing. He heads towards the kitchens, thinking maybe Nie Huaisang is trying to convince the cooks to add more seasoning to the meals again. He takes a shortcut through the training grounds because by this point, the tea will be cold and over brewed.
And that’s where he finds him, in the training grounds, the last place Lan Wangji would have thought to look.
It’s immediately obvious why Nie Huaisang is there, sitting on the sidelines. Jiang Wanying is training, sword in hand, going through routine forms, sweat coating his skin. Lan Wangji admits he looks impressive; his movements are fast and precise with a fluidity rarely found outside of Yunmeng.
Lan Wangji does not look over to the other side of the training grounds where Wei Ying is doing those same drills. Instead, he grabs Nie Huaisang’s arm and drags him away. Nie Huaisang screeches in indignation but one look from Lan Wangji and he goes quietly.
By the time they arrive at the pavilion, the tea is cold and unpleasant, and Lan Wangji has to make a new pot.
“He's so kind and considerate,” Huaisang says a few days later, “He helped me study this morning.”
Lan Wangji sips his tea, not having to ask who ‘he’ is.
“What were you studying?” Lan Wangji asks because that sounds like a safe question.
“I can’t remember. I was too busy staring at his eyelashes. Have you seen his eyelashes, Lan Wangji? They're beautiful and frame his eyes so wonderfully.”
Yes, Lan Wangji has seen his eyelashes, though he did not make note of their beauty nor does he feel inclined to.
Nie Huaisang’s infatuation gets to the point where Jiang Wanying is all Huaisang can talk about.
“We went down to Caiyi town today and I saw him hold a puppy. A Puppy. After seeing such a sight, I can die a happy man.”
“He passed me a note and our fingers brushed. I swear I almost fainted on the spot like some swooning maiden.”
One time, Nie Huaisang gets so distracted talking about Jiang Wanying’s biceps that he walks right into a wall (Lan Wangji did not warn Nie Huiasang of the upcoming wall; he does not feel guilty about that).
The worst part of it all, Lan Wangji finds out, is that Nie Huaisang’s feelings are reciprocated. Jiang Wanying isn’t the type of person to throw himself on any flat surface while sighing loudly (thankfully) but Lan Wangji has seen how his eyes always focus on Nie Huaisang and how his touch always linger on Nie Huaisang a little longer than propriety dictates.
Jiang Wanying and Nie Huaisang hold romantic feelings towards one another. And yet they do nothing. It’s infuriating.
Lan Wangji tries asking his brother for advice. Xichen says these things take time and to let them figure it out on their own. Completely ridiculous advice; Xichen isn’t the one who has to put up with all the longing looks.
Lan Wangji doesn’t have his brother’s patience.
He locks them up in a closet. He is not proud of himself. What he has done is shameful, but he just can’t take it anymore.
He walks away, ignoring the banging against the door, heavily fortified with talismans. He goes to the library to punish himself for his misdeed. He will release them after he's copied the rules a few times.
The next day, Nie Huaisang and Jiang Wanying walk around Cloud Recess holding hands.
Lan Wangji does not regret his actions. By the approving look Uncle sends him, Lan Wangji concludes that he did the right thing.

okay SO i want to work on my mxtx fics that have been sitting in my gdocs and uhhhh i would like to know. which of the following fics y’all would like to see first?
• airplane as ming fan (pre-abyss, lowkey airplane/binghe but also not really, airplane and shen yuan being weird friends, airplane wanting to live and keep binghe safe vs airplane wanting to avoid being a part of the plot)
• shang qinghua and liu qingge go to a festival together and have a weird time (post-canon, mutual pining, liu qingge as being embarrassed about existing 24/7, mbj as sqh’s weird and deranged wingman, sqh as the only cultivator any demon will talk to normally)
• jiang cheng, nie huaisang, wei wuxian and lan wangji go on a road trip together by accident and jc and nhs are subjected to wangxian so much they become famous food critics (this one is very stupid, replacing the road-trip they went on in canon to do yin iron stuff, no sunshot campaign/wen ruohan being evil, wangxian teen summer fling, sangcheng besties 4 lyfe, sangcheng are so fed up with wangxian existing near them that they start going to every food establishment they can and ranking them)
• fengqing bbc merlin au (feng xin as prince arthur and my qing as merlin, that’s all i have to say about this one)

WWX and NHS's friendship is the most underrated relationships in the fandom.
😭😭 early nie huaisang & wei wuxian bestie moments were so cute and it's a shame nie huaisang is usually relegated to being a wangxian wingman or jiang cheng's super canon love interest of the month. it's clear he and wei wuxian had a lot of fun together & i would like to see more of that! esp since wei wuxian becomes so close to lan wangji whom nie huaisang is terrified of like that is an untapped well of comedic potential if i've ever seen one
also like. HOW is there so little post canon content looking at the relationship between the main character and his childhood bff who brought him back from the dead to fulfil his revenge plot against the guy who helped ruin the main character's life. is that not the setup of an extremely interesting relationship

Thanks for all of your support this year, Rika, it's always a pleasure to see your name pop up in my inbox. I hope you like the fic, and thanks (as always) for reading! <3
(also posted to ao3, if you prefer to read there.)
[gen; prompt fill; modern setting; meet-cute; wingman!a-Yuan]
- Safe Person -
Mingjue startled as something collided with his leg and clung there.    "Baba!" wailed a pitiful voice. "I'm lost forever!"    He stared down at the child who had wrapped his arms and legs around him and who was definitely working up to a tantrum.
Mingjue was familiar with those, though his brother only threw them semi-regularly now that he was an adult.    "Hey, buddy," he said, trying to keep his tone reassuring. "You get separated from your dad?"    "Lost! Lost for e-e-ever!"    Luckily, it was not in fact forever. A scowling woman hurried over.    "A-Yuan!" she scolded. "What are you doing? What did I tell you about strangers?"    "If I'm lost find a safe person," the kid - a-Yuan - recited, between hiccups (the wailing had already decreased to sniffles). "If I'm lost don't move."    "Oh my god," she muttered. She glared at Mingjue again and hauled the kid up into her arms, like she was worried that Mingjue was an imminent threat.    "This isn't a safe person! This is a stranger!"    "Sorry," Mingjue offered. "He just grabbed onto me. To be fair he didn't move, after that?"    She was not impressed.
He saw them more and more, after that - so often that he wondered how they hadn't seen each other before.    Or, well, a-Yuan saw him.    In the grocery store, weeping and calling him 'baba' again, the kid ran up and collapsed on his feet with such drama that even Huaisang would have been impressed.    At the park, catching sight of him and then (Mingjue would have sworn it was on purpose) falling off the top level of the fort: Mingjue just barely caught him in time to avert a broken arm.    At the bookstore, holding out a book and asking, very sweetly, for baba to read it to him. Mingjue was still holding it - and still utterly confused about where this baba thing had even come from - when the scowling woman reappeared.    "What is your deal?" she demanded.    "Uh, what's his deal?"    A-Yuan, who was holding the woman's hand, reached up for Mingjue's as well. He took it instinctively, big brother instincts kicking in before he could think better of it.    She remained unimpressed.
The weather was usually predictable, in their city, but occasionally it did surprising things. Sometimes it was warm sunshine in winter, vibrant rainbows, gentle snow like drifting glitter in the evening light.    Sometimes it was rain so sudden and heavy that it caused flash flooding.    Mingjue was huddled under an awning with a press of other shoppers when he heard, even over the thundering rain, a collective gasp from what he could only describe as up-river. The gasp was followed by shouting. By shrieking.    Without thinking, Mingjue waded out into the water that was now well over ankle-deep. He couldn't see much; whatever small thing was hurtling toward him was indistinct, but he braced himself and snatched it up out of the water anyway. It was... a child, it was a-Yuan, and he was soaked and shivering and crying in a quiet, terrified way entirely unlike the performative tears Mingjue knew him for, and he clung to Mingjue like he would never let go.    Mingjue held him just as tightly. He waded in the direction the kid had come from, barely hearing the celebratory cheers from the crowd, and met the scowling woman in the middle of the washed out street. She wasn't glaring today - she was white, and shaking as she reached out for a-Yuan.    "He's okay," Mingjue said.    "Who the fuck are you?!" she asked, but there was no heat in it this time.    "Nie Mingjue," he offered, figuring it was about time.    She stared at him. The rain beat down on them, dripped down her face and from her ruined hairstyle. Her eyes were big, and deep, and impossible to look away from.    "Wen Qing," she said, and finally - finally - she looked impressed.

Scarletjedi’s Jiang Cheng Needs Love Fic Rec List
okay, so, I’ve realized that as much as I love Wangxian (and nothing makes me happier then seeing pretty art of a landscape and then realizing there are two figures, one in white, one in black and red, walking along the path), that I read fic for Jiang Cheng.
@piyo-13 sorry not sorry, lol
Here are some of my favorites:
....most of these are explicit.
Finished Fic:
*** is a super favorite
Jiang Cheng is Trying series by Captain Jojo (Gen) Rated G-T; yunmeng shuangjie reconciliation
Jiang Cheng has tried his whole life, in different ways, with different people, and to varying degrees of success. He keeps trying, and that's all that matters until it's not enough.
three to get ready by sysrae (Nie Mingjue/Wen Qing/Jiang Cheng) Rated E; Modern AU
Mingjue’s thumbs stroke gently against the wings of his shoulders as he leans in, setting his mouth to Jiang Cheng’s ear. “Qingqing wants this, too. All three of us. You, me, her.” A shudder runs down Jiang Cheng’s spine; he’s dizzy, breath coming too fast, and he’s shamefully hard just from this, his erection trapped against the edge of the sink. “Would you like that, Cheng-di? It’s fine if you don’t, but if you do –” “Yes.” The word rasps out of him, echo-y and desperate. “I want that.”
***Lynchpin by ShanaStoryteller (Jiang Cheng/Wen Qing) Not Rated; Time Travel AU
He can’t get Jin Guangyao’s words out of his head.
If he’d only believed in Wei Wuxian, if he’d only been willing to stand up for him, could it all have been avoided?
***Bilateral by serein (Jiang Cheng/Nie Mingjue, Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang, polyamory) Rated E; Canon AU, Golden Core Reveal
I wouldn't mind, Mingjue's voice echoes in his mind. If you wanted to be - with him, also. We share everything.
au where mingcheng start banging during sunshot, and this fixes a lot of things. life gets more complicated, however, when nie mingjue notices his brother's feelings for his lover.
where i am soft by serein (Jiang Cheng/Nie Mingjue) Rated E; canon
Jiang Cheng is always too fucking soft.
Soft hearted, soft willed, now he's stuck with a soft dick on top of it all. It's sometimes as if the fates looked upon him and went, "oh, Jiang Wanyin? Yes, fuck him specifically."
WARNING for pretty blunt, non-explicit discussion of past rape and attempted rape/sexual assault and mention of decapitation.
***Trauma is the Best Wingman by Strayhaven (Jiang Cheng/Nie Huaisang) Rated E **Mind the Tags**; Modern AU - College/University
“Do you think we could share?” Jiang Cheng looked up at the question, surprised. He'd been lost in his research. There was a guy standing awkwardly and shifting under the weight of a stack of books in an oversize sweater at the end of the library table Jiang Cheng had taken over. He glared at him for a minute, well, he assumed he was glaring. The other guy only shifted the books a little and stayed stubbornly rooted to the spot, didn't even stop looking at him, and gave him a small uncomfortable smile. “Sorry, it's just, all the tables are full of study groups and the books I need are reference only volumes.”
“What?” Jiang Cheng heard himself say.
***Yunmeng Spice (Fenugreek) by a_stands_for (Jiang Cheng/Nie Huaisang) Rated E; Canon Divergence AU; Cloud Recesses Study Days
So... what exactly did Jiang Cheng and Nie Huaisang get up to while Wei Ying was getting Lan Zhan drunk? In at least one reality, the answer is: Wow. Just. Really, quite a lot.
or
JC and NH have drunken virginal sex and discover that they are exactly each other's type. In that order.
or
NH discovers that JC has an unusual physiology and proceeds to lock that shit down.
perfect pretenders by skyestiel (Jiang Cheng/Nie Huaisang) Rated T; Canon Divergence AU; Cloud Recesses Study Days
“Well, since Jiang Cheng has made it clear he believes we’ll all die virgins—”
“—I swear—”
“—let’s have a competition to determine who will find love first! Specifically, which of us can kiss someone first. Or...” Wei Wuxian knits his brows. “Wait, no, even better. We’ll see who can get the most kisses while we're here!”
Or: A kissing competition between three friends starts innocent enough. That is until feelings come into play and fill the halls of the Cloud Recesses with drama, secrets, and many misunderstandings.
Adventures with Roommates by elehoh (Jiang Cheng/Nie Huaisang) Rated E; Modern AU - College/University
When Jiang Cheng's plan to room with Wei Ying during their sophomore year falls apart, he finds himself suddenly rooming with Nie Huaisang.
Despite being a vast improvement from his last roommate, who literally ended up dating his sister, Jiang Cheng quickly learns that being roommates with Nie Huaisang comes with its own particular disadvantages and advantages.
our footsteps sing a reckless serenade by ThirtySixSavedFiles (Jiang Cheng/Nie Huaisang) Rated E; AU Modern with Magic
In the wake of intracity warfare, Jiang Cheng finds himself engaged by proxy to Nie Huaisang in an effort to build ties between their sects. The fragile peace is short-lived, however, and with the strands of magic and the alliances that hold the city together fraying apart, Jiang Cheng must decide where he stands in order to save what he loves.
Upon our Silver Bridge by TheWanderingHeart (Jiang Cheng/Lan Xichen) Rated M; Post-Canon; Chinese Mythology & Folklore
“When the path ignites a soul, there's no remaining in place. The foot touches ground, but not for long.” ― Hakim Sanai
**
Lan Xichen's sorrows have caught the attention of something. Unlike the adventures and foes they have faced before, there is no obvious enemy here to defeat. If this is the same thing they thought had taken Nie Mingjue's life, then he believes it is fated for him to die as well. Nothing can stop the black fire when it wants to burn.
Jiang Cheng is sure his part in this is over. Wei Wuxian is back, his grand adventure concluded, and he'd never been at the centre of it anyway. So what does it matter what happens to him in the end?
Slowly, he will come to realise that there will always be a battle to fight, a story to tell, a choice to make, and there is no such thing as an end to anything.
***Running Our Hands Through Embers by MarvelousMar and MoAv (Jiang Cheng/Lan Xichen) Rated E; Modern Au - Reincarnation; Slow Burn
If asked, Jiang Cheng would compare falling in love with Lan Xichen to a moth inevitably drawn to a flame.
It burned.
***
In which Jiang Cheng discovers that even death can't help him escape from his trauma, so he embarks on a quest to save the people he loves, fix what he can, make the love of his life fall for him, and maybe, somewhere along the way, do a little bit of healing.
***What Married People Do by shamelesscooper (Jiang Cheng/Liǔ Qīnggē) Rated E; SVSSS crossover; yunmeng shuangjie reconciliation
“I propose that we kill two birds with one stone,” Liu Mingyan said, and if her tone goes a bit theatrical, Jiang Cheng had the decency not to point it out.
“I don’t follow,” Jiang Cheng deadpanned, crossing his arms. “I thought the plan was to milk this whole thing for what it’s worth and gracefully part ways when it inevitably fell apart.”
“Yes, well. There’s a perfectly viable solution to the whole ‘falling apart’ part - you,” she said, pointing to Jiang Cheng, “Marry my brother.”
--
Jiang Cheng gets married in the spring of his 39th year. It turns out better than he expected.
WIP: UPDATE!!! Both of these fics have finished, and Lay Your Hands On Me also has a sequel one shot!
***Lay your hands on me by hmc73 (Jiang Cheng/Nie Mingjue) Rated E; Modern AU - College/University, Kink/BDSM centric
Jiang Cheng, grad student and bi disaster, is just trying to get his PhD and earn his parents’ approval. But when he happens to meet his best friend’s older brother, Nie Mingjue, his whole world gets upended. Jiang Cheng discovers a new side of himself — one that craves submission. Can he balance his studies and his family’s expectations with his newly discovered desires?
The Spark of Lightning by kumquats, shamelesscooper (Jiang Cheng/Nie Mingjue) Rated M; AU - Canon Divergence; Sunshot Campaign
With the Sunshot Campaign well underway, Jiang Cheng finds himself taken under Nie Mingjue’s wing. Fighting to be a sect leader worthy of his men - and a man worthy of Nie Mingjue’s respect - Jiang Cheng feels as though he might as well be challenging the sun himself.
But the sun can't dominate the skies forever. A storm stirs against it, threatening to smother its unrelenting glare, and Jiang Cheng feels that maybe — maybe he can be as lightning in this storm. To strike, however briefly, and light up the entire sky.

A prequel to To Make a Home in a Storm (also a rec! Finished fic)

2020 Creator Wrap: 5 Favorite Works
Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 5 (or so) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. Tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome works.
Tagged by @inessencedevided and @rockmarina =)
Yay, AO3 is back up so I can do this now XD cos the brain fog is thick and I couldn’t even remember 5 titles let alone my favs 😅 and I wrote a lot of little things while fogged this year and never posted them, or thought I did only to find out later I didn’t, or just...forgot they existed entirely, and a few things posted here on tumblr but not AO3, so...I’m very confused and needed help remembering 😅 I plan on sorting that mess out soon
This year has been my worst and least productive from when I first started posting fic years ago, but that’s okay, my health has been rock bottom this year so it’s to be expected, so every drabble and fic is something to be proud of!!
But, my favs, let’s see...after I scroll my own AO3 to remind myself what I wrote not much 😅 but also crap I was so ready to link my sangxian fic but that was posted late 2019 😭
A Dream Made Real (Wangxian, Merfolk AU, Tears of Pearl Part  6)
I never meant for this merfolk AU to be more than that first part of the series but whoops, it got away from me XD I really miss writing it, hopefully I can get more done this year!
Side note: also A Charming Distraction which is set in the same setting but not quite a part of the series (although I’m going to work it in after thinking about it, so yes this happens at some point after part 6) because really, what is the point of having a merman boyfriend if you don’t use him like a banana boat to lazily float down the river? (also this was a collab with @sweetlittlevampire, and she enabled me wonderfully when I had this idea of Lan Zhan dropping a water whale on Wei Wuxian’s head and then she drew it so beautifully (the moment before Wei Wuxian got drenched, which is beautiful and not as ridiculous as it sounds XD)
Never Again (Nie Huaisang/Jiang Cheng, unhappy ending)
I’m still so happy with the angst in this, and cos my friend who loves angst prompted me I was able to just go hard and not tone it down (I LOVE angst XD) and then she cussed me out for how painful it was, which was the most fun part XD but I love the (so deliciously painful) idea of Huaisang pushing Jiang Cheng away to keep him safe but also being absolutely fucking brutal because he knows Jiang Cheng’s most painful weaknesses and also knows nothing short of total brutality will keep Jiang Cheng far enough away to not notice everything that follows in canon, and cos Jiang Cheng just won’t take the hint 😭
An untitled Soulmate AU I’m working on for the Touken Ranbu fandom (Kurikasen ship, WHY ARE THEY A RAREPAIR I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND) which so far exists online only as this WIP wednesday snippet post. It’s not finished yet (or is it? endings are hard) but I wrote 9k of it in 2020 so it counts right? XD
Now and Always (Jin Ling/Lan Sizhui)
This was just purely self-indulgent. I just wanted to write Sizhui trying to make Yanli’s soup for Jin Ling, I have big feelings about Sizhui having tried it but not Jin Ling. Also, literally nothing would happen in this fic without Jingyi, he is the true MVP, the ultimate wingman, and he deserves an award!
Putting to Rights (Poly Junior Quartet with Jin Ling/Jingyi focus)
I just like writing the juniors but also I’ll never not love the moment Jin Ling rushes to his feet to go off at Sizhui and Zizhen only to get yanked back down because his hand is still all tangled with Jingyi’s by the forehead ribbon XD
Okay, I’m not gonna tag anyone cos I’m late doing this and everyone has probably already been tagged and I’ve been offline so long I feel weird tagging anyone anyway XD
But if any content creators see this and wanna do it but weren’t tagged, PLEASE DO IT, you can say I tagged you =)

“you’re very obvious about your crush, so i’ve decided to help you.” nhs & nmj sibling bonding through trying to wingman your brother?
a continuation of sorts to this, but can be read on its own without problems
Nie Huaisang has a very suspicious look on his face when he entered his brother’s office, which Nie Mingjue found somewhat rude. Just because he usually summoned his brother to scold him about something (skipping practice or spending his allowance on frivolities, most of the time) didn’t mean that it was the only thing he could be summoned for.
“You wanted to see me?” Nie Huaisang asked, his hand still on the open door, ready to bolt if the conversation topic displeased him.
“I do, yes,” Nie Mingjue confirmed, putting down the letter he was reading and motioning for his brother to come sit on the other side of his desk.
Nie Huaisang, brat that he was, refused to obey.
“What’s it about this time? I have been good lately! I didn’t even miss sabre practice this week!”
That, technically, was true.
It was also true that Nie Huaisang had made a show of being particularly awful with his sabre, cutting himself twice. Somehow, he’d managed to even cut his right hand. Nie Mingjue refused to hear how that had happened.
“I’ve just been thinking that you’re not a child anymore,” Nie Mingjue explained. “It’s time to start thinking about finding you a spouse.”
Nie Huaisang’s hand tightened on the door, his eyes narrowed. Before he could run away, Nie Mingjue continued.
“So, is there anyone you’d be interested in?”
Ever so slightly, Nie Huaisang relaxed. His expression remained suspicious, but he finally closed the door and came to sit at his brother’s desk.
“Like it matters who I’m interested in,” he pouted. “I know how that game is played.”
“If it didn’t matter, I wouldn’t be asking you. Not that I really need to be asking, mind you. You’re very obvious about your crush, so I’ve decided to help you.”
It was kind of cute how big Nie Huaisang’s got at hearing that, and how he scrambled for his fan so he could hide behind it.
“I have no idea what you mean, Da-ge!” he squeaked. “I certainly don’t have a crush on anyone!”
“Really? Then I must have been mistaken,” Nie Mingjue replied with feigned surprise. “It’s lucky I hadn’t gotten around yet to sending that letter to Lan Qiren. I was going to ask if he’d consider a match between you and Lan Xichen. I’m glad you stopped me in time.”
Nie Huaisang gasped and dropped his fan. He looked like a deer surrounded during a hunt, unsure which direction to run to. It was hard for Nie Mingjue to keep a straight face, but he still managed. He so rarely got the chance to really mess with his brother these days, he wasn’t going to ruin this little bit of fun.
“That’s…” Nie Huaisang stuttered. “You… As if Lan Qiren would agree. As if Lan Xichen would agree!”
Nie Mingjue scoffed, remembering Lan Xichen drunkenly rambling about how wonderful and soft and lovable he found Nie Huaisang. It really wouldn’t be a problem to get him to agree. As for Lan Qiren, Nie Mingjue wasn’t worried either. Lan Qiren had the world’s lowest standards, all he wanted for his nephews was to find someone who actually loved them and he’d give his blessing to almost anything.
“I notice there’s no objection about you agreeing?” Nie Mingjue noted.
“Of course I’d agree!” Nie Huaisang whined. “Xichen is so… he’s so…”
Nie Mingjue smirked, preparing himself for a long description of his best friend’s many qualities.
“He’s just so adorable, you know?” Nie Huaisang lamented instead, taking his brother by surprise.
“Adorable?” Nie Mingjue repeated.
Nie Huaisang nodded firmly.
“Yes, of course he is. The most adorable person I’ve ever seen. I know that’s not why other people are interested in him,” Nie Huaisang added, rolling his eyes. “But that’s because other people are stupid and have no taste. It’s great that he’s a good cultivator and so elegant and all that,” he explained with a dismissive hand gesture. “But that’s not the really amazing thing about him. Like… have you ever seen him eat a piece of raw vegetable?”
Nie Mingjue, baffled, shook his head. If he had seen that, it had not caught his attention.
“He looks like a little rabbit when he does that,” Nie Huaisang explained with a disgustingly fond sigh. “And he eats that because he thinks it’s more responsible than eating candies. Isn’t that the cutest? Oh, and that little sigh he does before he plays the xiao? How precious is that? Or… oh, you know that thing he does when he’s pissed off and trying to hide it?”
Again, Nie Mingjue shook his head. His brother looked confused by that answer.
“Of course you know! When he does that thing…”
Nie Huaisang slowly closed his eyes and took a deep breath, a perfect imitation of something that Nie Mingjue had, in fact, seen Lan Xichen do dozens of times before but never paid attention to.
“I think that’s really adorable,” Nie Huaisang explained after his demonstration.
“You like Lan Xichen just because you think he’s cute,” Nie Mingjue mumbled, still trying to wrap his mind around the idea.
The most sought out cultivator of their generation, a warrior without compare in battle, a respected sect leader in spite of his youth, with a cultivation level high above anyone his age… and Nie Huaisang just found him cute.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Nie Huaisang sniffed disdainfully. “Of course that’s not the only reason…”
“Oh, good. I was worried…”
“He’s also incredibly stylish,” Nie Huaisang explained. “Jiang Cheng and I often chat about it, we’ve never seen anyone as well dressed as him.”
Nie Mingjue pinched the bridge of his nose. “He just… he only wears white, Huaisang. Like all the Lans. How is that stylish?”
Nie Huaisang gasped, his face displaying a level of horror that would have made a passerby think his brother had revealed they were Wen Ruohan’s secret love children, or something at least as horrifying.
“How can you insist Xichen-ge like that?” Nie Huaisang asked, one hand dramatically pressed to the side of his face. “Oh, people really don’t know anything. Have you really never seen how his robes are always so perfectly coordinated? There’s not a lot that can be done with Lan rules against dressing too sumptuous, but he manages anyway, it’s amazing. I have never seen anyone with such refined tastes.”
“You like Xichen because he’s cute and well dressed,” Nie Mingjue sighed, feeling very tired suddenly. “Of all the reasons… no, no, I don’t want to know if there’s anything else that caused your interest in him!” he added when Nie Huaisang looked as if he might speak again. “I’m sending that letter to Lan Qiren right now.”
“For real?”
“Of course. Can’t wait to get rid of you. And if Xichen’s tastes are bad enough that he’s decided you’re the person he wants in his life, then he deserves you. Now go away, talking to you gave me a headache.”
Nie Huaisang grinned, and threw himself over the desk to hug his brother, completely messing up the piles of paperwork there. Nie Mingjue only mildly grumbled against that.
“You’re the best Da-ge ever!” Nie Huaisang exclaimed, squeezing him tight. “I so hope Lan Qiren will agree to the match! It would be wonderful, really wonderful! Xichen is so cute, and we’d go shopping for fabric together, and he’s such a good kisser, it’ll be amazing if I can marry him!”
“It sure will be,” Nie Mingjue grumbled, patting his brother’s back. His hand stilled when his brain caught up with what he’d just heard. “Wait. What do you mean he’s a good kisser?”
Pulling back quickly, Nie Huaisang burst out laughing and quickly ran from the room.
Nie Mingjue rose from his seat, ready to chase him and demand an explanation, only to quickly fall back down on his chair, pinching the bridge of his nose again.
He really, truly didn’t want to know how his brother knew that.

cql college/job au xiyao edition
because these two have the potential to be the slowest of slow fucking burns and extremely excruciatingly painfully perfectly polite at all times
featuring: ta/student very-much-not-a-relationship, enough ust to set the entire humanities building on fire, corporate espionage, nie huaisang being the sneakiest and sweetest slytherin, background wangxian, nie mingjue being a boss, intense eye contact, let lan xichen say fuck, meng yao stress hours, WERE YOU ONLY PRETENDING TO BE DELICATE AND POOR, summer internship, background wangxian
it got uh. very long. so.
meng yao starts working for nie enterprises when he’s 16 as a part-time janitor. he has two other part time jobs and is studying for his ged.
one day he solves some kind of problem that nie enterprises is having and nie mingjue likes this guy and promotes him to his personal assistant on the spot
nie huaisong is always flitting about his brother’s office etc, and they become friends and meng yao helps him with his homework.
when huaisong is getting ready to go to small posh private university, he will definitely need tutors. mingjue is happily persuaded into converting meng yao’s job into full-time huaisang babysitting tutoring, including paying for yao’s tuition and room and board to get a degree himself; his job is to make sure huaisang gets good grades and not in trouble. meng yao sees this for the golden ticket it is and very happily agrees. this is going to be the easiest job he’s ever had, and he’s got job security as long as huaisang doesn’t mess up too badly.
first day of classes, meng yao is 22 and looking around at the 30-odd 18-year-old trust fund babies with a sinking stomach telling him that he does not belong here.
this is a philosophy and ethics class like. in a literal ivory tower. this is possibly the last place he should be.
and the most gorgeous man he’s ever seen in his life walks into the room with the professor. and he’s introduced as “and this is our TA, lan xichen.”
lan xichen smiles at the room with the kind of look that makes it feel like he’s making eye contact with everyone. and then he makes real eye contact with meng yao. “he’s attractive as hell,” they both think, and then think nothing of it.
but, it’s a small class. and it meets 3 times a week. and lan xichen shuts down someone who pokes at meng yao’s age, and meng yao asks questions perfectly tailored to making sure that huaisang and the other students actually understand the material. and by the end of week 2 they’re both saddled with an extremely unfortunate crush that they both need to get a handle on. for professionalism’s sake. they’re at work goddamn it.
and one day meng yao comes to office hours to ask a question that’s much more advanced than what they’re talking about in class, and in lan xichen’s tiny ta office talking about ethics, they are exceptionally and perfectly polite and appropriate and within the exact bounds of a ta-student relationship.
they are also both about to catch on fire.
this continues all school year, because it’s a two-part class. meng yao comes to office hours, and he and lan xichen are stringently appropriate the whole time, and at no point do they so much as brush fingers. they see each other every single day.
huaisang thinks this is 1) absolutely hilarious and 2) the perfect distraction. he wingmans the hell out of meng yao in class, he third-wheels on office hours specifically to make it worse, and he arranges “chance” meetings between them outside of class. (he got some details about lan xichen’s daily schedule from wei wuxian, who he is eternally surprised is actually somehow getting information from lan wangji the silent wonder)
(he’s not getting it from lan wangji; lan xichen is wingmanning his little brother. the info wei wuxian is passing on is straight from the horse’s mouth.)
nie huaisang thinks he’s being very clever and sneaky in arranging his classes and portfolio to make it look like he’s just taking electives when he’s really planning on switching to a fine arts major at the last possible minute
he is being clever and sneaky, but meng yao knows what he’s doing anyway
meng yao is keeping that ball up in the air as long as he can though, because that’s a later-problem.
in addition to falling in extremely professional love with his ta, his asshole dad has also come out of the woodwork and is trying to involve him in corporate espionage. which is less than super great.
on the one side, asshole dad who hasn’t supported you in 22 years and didn’t care when your mother died when you were 16 and pushed you down the stairs because you had the audacity to ask for help, who will gladly frame you even if you don’t help. on the other hand, your boss, who has treated you well for a boss, but has explicitly told you your job depends on keeping his little brother as out-of-trouble as possible and who you don’t think will believe you
in this au, he’s solidly with the nie clan because: Golden Fucking Ticket, where the strings are “don’t let huaisang fuck up too bad,” and where “fuck up” means like. drunk driving or failing a class. he’ll probably even keep his job after huaisang’s art degree reveal. all dear old dad is offering is a jail sentence.
but he still needs to somehow convince jgs that he’s double-crossing nie enterprises without actually doing that, so that he doesn’t get framed for doing it.
it’s stressful.
lan xichen’s life isn’t roses and pearls either, though it’s not nearly as stressful as playing double-agent corporate espionage while also babysitting huaisang and getting a degree
lan xichen’s life is all about being the Dutiful Eldest Son so that lan wangji can have an inch of freedom
this includes becoming a corporate accountant (a job he’s bored just thinking about) and marrying a Good Girl From A Respectable Family (he is extremely gay), and eventually having 2.5 children and a white picket fence and a dog (he’s a cat person and doesn’t know what to do with children). he tells himself it’s all for lan wangji and it’s almost enough to make him want to do it.
being the ta for his thesis advisor’s philosophy and ethics class was supposed to be his Fun Indulgent Treat because he has no idea what “fun” or “indulgent” or “treat” mean
but now he’s in love with one of his students and that’s. not. good.
he’s all of 21 and he’s pretty sure he’s going to be blacklisted from all jobs for his entire life unless he manages, somehow, to keep anyone from knowing how entirely unprofessional he’s being.
he is trying very hard to distract himself from his gayngst by helping wangji with his own. 18-year-olds can be so oblivious in love, he thinks, failing to see any irony at all.
he’s also been telling his bff mingjue about this extremely painful experience this entire time, under a pseudonym. if mingjue has to hear one more word about “Y”’s dimples, he’s going to scream and then he’s going to force Y into a closet with xichen and not let them out until they’ve solved this. he’s very tired.
at one point when he’s about to pass out from extreme eye contact, he gives meng yao his number so that he can “pass it to nie huaisang, in case he has any questions” and just. prays really hard that meng yao will text him after classes are over and he’s back to just being a grad student and they can be friends.
BUT. BEFORE HE HAS THE CHANCE. IN THAT TIME BETWEEN FINALS ENDING AND GRADES BEING TURNED IN.
lan xichen begins his summer internship at nie enterprises in accounting. and meng yao returns to fill in for an admin on her maternity leave. and they see each other in the break room.
both of them: *internal gay screaming* Hi, what a coincidence, how are you doing?
(boys, you are in different departments, nobody cares if you date as long as you don’t start fucking on the desks. they don’t know this because they’re young and very concerned with being Professional and with Career Advancement.)
they have Very Professional lunch together every day. and will buy each other coffee, Professionally. and it would be much more professional if they would just actually make out and then come to work like normal people instead of clearly wanting to make out every time they see each other and instead being Very Incredibly Professional with their words and actions.
mingjue clues in that this is Y. meng yao is Y. Oh my god, first i didn’t want to know that, second this is going to be so easy, and then i’ll never have to listen to xichen wax rhapsodic about his eyes again, he thinks.
he is incorrect.
the harder he tries, the more vehemently perfect their professionalism becomes. which means he’s watching them have extremely intense eye contact at work and can’t actually say anything about it because, it’s just eye contact? what is he going to say? stop looking at people when delivering tps reports?
he also can’t say anything outright like “just. kiss. him.” because. he’s both of their Entire Boss. at the moment he’s xichen’s boss’s boss’s boss. he can’t do anything without probably violating sexual harassment laws.
mingjue is tired.
meanwhile the corporate espionage double-agent act is still ongoing and meng yao continues to be stressed
mingjue is alerted to meng yao “stealing” secrets and has a freak-out; he hasn’t slept in three days and he trusted meng yao and how could he? was this his plan all along WAS HE ONLY PRETENDING TO BE DELICATE AND POOR
xichen steps between them and insists there’s a reasonable explanation and jesus christ mingjue have you slept when was the last time you’ve eaten you look terrible let’s get you to bed and talk about this in the morning
(meng yao doesn’t realize that he’s clutched on to lan xichen’s suit until after he releases it and lan xichen is trying, very hard, to pretend that it didn’t happen because he won’t be able to think of anything else if it did)
xichen, immediately after mingjue is in huaisang’s care: i believe you, but what the fuck is happening, yao.
(if he wasn’t so rattled by the entire mingjue-reaming thing yao would be able to savor lan xichen saying fuck sooooo much better.)
(once yao explains it is a strain not to kiss him right then and there in that empty conference room but he deserves better than lan xichen, who can’t bring anything to the table and can’t even bring him home to eat at his table, because he is the Dutiful Eldest Son and his closet needs to be made of motherfuckin steel)
(huaisang knows exactly what the fuck is up and talks mingjue down, because meng yao is sneaky but he wasn’t counting on huaisang like. actually caring.)
this is also the exact same day where lan wangji brings wei wuxian home for dinner and this goes. as well as might be expected. given Uncle hates everything about wei wuxian from his motorcycle to his leather to his attitude. but wangji is happy and he’s smiling and that’s why lan xichen is doing this. that’s why lan xichen is doing everything.
the next day the 3-zun make a Plan to trap jgs and then get them audited by the irs, since if he’s doing shady espionage stuff he’s also almost certainly doing shady tax stuff (they’re right, he is)
after the internship is over, that very evening, lan xichen asks meng yao if he wants to “hang out, as friends”
oh, you thought this pining dysfunctional trainwreck was going to end here? buddy. lan xichen is in fucking narnia, he’s so deep in the closet, because he must be Dutiful.
they go on several not-a-dates doing Friend Things. and several study sessions where no studying is done. and eventually.
lan qiren: so when are you introducing me to your boyfriend? he seems like a good kid, nothing like that wei wuxian character
lan xichen.exe has stopped working
lan qiren: what, do you think i’m blind? he either is your boyfriend or he should be. good head on his shoulders. *returns to his newspaper*
turns out lan xichen’s self-sacrificial bargain with the universe was borne from a place of living in a heteropatriarchy and not actually from the reality of his uncle’s beliefs, who knew
(lan qiren loves his nephews and wants them to be happy. he also has eyes, in his head, that connect to his brain. he knew xichen was probably gay by the time the kid was 14, and started reading books with titles like “how to accept your gay son” in the living room. xichen assumed this was about wangji, because he also has eyes and wants his baby brother to be happy. wangji bringing a boy home was actually a big surprise to his uncle. this family does not actually talk to each other about things.)
anyway the next friend-not-a-date that he and yao go on, he asks yao on a real date.
he is bracing for rejection when yao kisses??? him???? for some reason?????
they make out &c. this is the boring part
they have a conversation about their feelings and discover that they’ve both been in love for a year a YEAR a fucking year. then they make out some more because lost time.
fin.

Nie Huaisang and Lan Wanji childhood friend AU mixed with wangxian and hangcheng; they fall in love with the two most oblivious yet handsome and kind men in all of ancient China and just wingman for each other
they are both equally terrible at being wingmen. lan wangji Does Not have the social skills for it. nie huaisang is so cheeky that wei wuxian thinks nie huaisang is hitting on Him and Also lan wangji??? meanwhile the brothers are Going Through It. jiang cheng is moping over the fact that the boy he likes is "hitting on" his BROTHER and also his brothers CRUSH and wei wuxian is anguishing over the fact that any time he tries to be alone with lan wangji nie huaisang Somehow shows up to start complimenting lan wangji and make winky faces at wei wuxian. jiang cheng and wei wuxian Also decide to wingman for each other. jiang cheng Does Not have the social skills for it. wei wuxian is so cheeky that nie huaisang thinks wei wuxian is hitting on Him. it's an absolute Disaster that results in jiang cheng and lan wangji having a number of Incredibly awkward conversations and wei wuxian and nie huaisang both being very confused about why they're flirting. this au also implies that lan wangji was dragged along on all of the gusu trios antics and it's one big confusing hilarious mess. lan wangji still barges in on the trio drinking but jiang cheng and nie huaisang have the same "we have to get these two Alone" thought and end up frantically dragging each other out of the room and making meaningful eye contact with their respective wingmen. when wei wuxian is asking lan wangji questions he's all "lan zhan do you even like me :((" cuz he can never manage to get lan wangji alone and thinks that means lan wangji doesn't Want to be alone with him and poor drunk lan wangji is like "mn. I like wei ying very much" and wei wuxians is fucking losing his mind like WHAT and lan wangji continues, "I like wei ying and want to kiss him" and tries to like. drunkenly give him a smooch but wei wuxian is a gentleman so he stops him and is like ohohohokay we can do that later but you are very drunk right now. meanwhile while they're having this disastrous but very sweet confession jiang cheng and nie huaisang are getting caught by lan qiren tipsily (and very poorly) making out behind a shed
on a sadder note... this also means that lan wangji has to watch his close friend slowly deteriorate and draw back and become so so different after the death of nie mingjue and nie huaisang has to watch his close friend spend years slowly falling apart in grief over the death of his lover while also watching the love of His life hate and love and grieve the same man

THE UNTAMED, YOUR CHOICE OF OURAN AU, SOUL EATER AU, S&S AU, OR CORPSE BRIDE AU
OKAYI’M GOING TO DO THE OURAN AU BECAUSE I THINK IT’S REALLY FUNNY AND I MADE THEBAD CHOICE™ OF READING A BUNCH OF NEWS TODAY.  Uh.  Mycomputer crashed halfway through this and I think somehow it got longer,so.  Sorry about that one.
ONE
Wen Ning is a scholarship student.  He’s more than ascholarship student, really, he’s a here by the grace of every godever and also his sister student who also, incidentally, is ona scholarship.  The phenomenally wealthy Wen family recently went down ina blaze of indignity and political scandal, but newly-broke Wen Qing is not hearing any arguments about sending her babybrother to a less-than-top-of-the-line high school, especially since he acedthe tests and was given a full ride except for books and uniform.  SinceWen Qing was halfway through med school at the time of the Wen scandal, they’reburning through their meager inheritance to get her degree and make ends meetfor food, on the gamble eventually they might be able to move out of their absolutelyshit one-bedroom apartment on a doctor’s salary and also because Wen Ning pointblank refused to let her drop out.  Therefore, when Wen Ning tries to hideout in an empty music room and accidentally breaks a very expensive vase, he hasa moment of abject dread and–well, yeah, okay, he’ll work it off, he guesses.
TWO
WeiWuxian isn’t actually planning to charge this kid for a vase that is definitelyworth more than the entire apartment building he lives in!  Wei Wuxian isnot an asshole!  It’s just that he hasnever seen this scholarship kid with the secondhand clothes and the long hairhiding his face and the unfortunate name speak to anyone outside of absolutelymandatory conversation, and it’s kind of depressing.  So, Wuxian has decided to adopt him, teachhim how to talk to people, and maybe buy him a ponytail holder.  He has about five seconds to get all of thatout on the third day since recruiting Wen Ning, when a very petite woman in ared coat storms in like a hurricane and corners Wuxian alone (or rather, withonly Lan Wangji, which is as close as it gets) with apparently homicidal intentto snarl, “If you’re messing with my brother’s head, no one will ever find yourbody.”
(WenNing did not mention being low-key press-ganged into a host club on the firstday.  On the second day, he came home ina real uniform that actually fit, with his hair cut into something thatresembled a style and pulled back from his face, and he had to spill hisguts because not even Wen Qing’s sleep schedule was going to make her miss thatone.)
Turnsout that the sister Wen Ning mentioned, implying that she was the same kind ofangelic creature as Jiang Yanli, is fucking terrifying.  Wei Wuxian rambles through hisexplanation so fast that he kind of doubts Wen Qing gets all of it, and then hewaves his hands helplessly and says, “I don’t know, he just seemed kind oflonely?”  Wen Qing narrows her eyes athim.  “It’s true!  I never see him talk to anyone!”
“A-Ningis a good kid,” she says, shoving a finger into Wuxian’s chestthreateningly.  “Our family never likedhim because he’s too nice, and no one else likes him because of his name, so ifI hear you’re messing with him…”
“Iswear,” Wuxian says, raising his hand.  “Ijust thought maybe it would be good for him, having some people to hang outwith.”
WenQing studies him for another moment, and then she steps back and nods and says,“It will be.”
Andthat’s how the host club gets a part-time manager in addition to its latestrecruit.
THREE
Thehosts are:
[rose_petal_animation.gif]
WeiWuxian, whois nominally in charge because he came up with this whole idea, on the argumentthat, quote, “Jiang Cheng needs to learn to be nicer.”  It was also tacitly agreed that he and JiangCheng needed something that would keep them out of the house and therefore outof Madam Yu’s way after school, and they’d already been kicked out of themartial arts club after a slight incident involving Wei Wuxian’s fist, JinZixuan’s face, and Jiang Cheng’s unapologetic support.  Wuxian went around and recruited some folks, and now he has a host club, which, in his opinion, is markedly more fun thanthe martial arts club.  The Mischievoustype.
JiangCheng, who has spent three years in this circus and is not noticeably nicer.  He’s likable enough with the guests, but nomatter what Wei Wuxian says, Jiang Cheng does know how to be civil whenthe situation calls for it.  He spends mostof his time trying to reign in his brother’s more wild ideas, but his successrate isn’t great, because their sets-and-costumes guy is a horrible enablerwith family money who is more than willing to contribute to all kinds ofnonsense as long as he can show up with a fan and look mysterious while hewatches the chaos at their events.  JiangCheng says he’s the Long-Suffering type but actually he’s the Bad Boy typebecause of his temper.
JinZixuan, who is only here because his mother said he’d be grounded until he graduatesunless he found a good extracurricular and he didn’t know who ran the host clubwhen he blurted out that he was planning to join it.  Now he’s committed because his mother will notsupport him leaving and it’s been three years and also he still hasn’t gottenJiang Yanli’s phone number, which has become absolutely necessary because thethree minutes he sees her every Thursday when she comes to get her brothers fortheir weekly sibling dinner are the best of his week.  There is a good chance Zixuan’s going to getpunched again when he finally gets his courage up to ask her out, but sometimesit be like that.  The Princely type, althoughhe’s hopeless when he’s not playing a part.
LanWangji, treasurer, who is only here because Wei Wuxian asked him to be, and everyone (except WeiWuxian) knows it.  He’s still remarkablypopular with the guests, despite the fact that most people are lucky to get fiveconsecutive words out of him and it’s a known fact that he’ll bow out of aconversation with nothing more than a brief apology and a nod the moment Wuxiancalls him.  Somehow, three years later,Wuxian has not picked up on the fact that Wangji is really not here tolearn to talk to women.  Save him.  The Stoic type.
LanXichen, generalsource of stability if not necessarily common sense, who is here because hisbrother is here.  He and Wen Qing bondimmediately over their shared Protective Older Sibling energies, although WenQing is very much here to beat up anyone who looks sideways at her brother andXichen is very much here to wingman his brother as hard as he can manage.  He’s a year older than the others, graduatingthis year, and the most popular host by a long shot.  The Chivalrous type.
WenNing, who, yeah, is wide-eyed and shy and tends to start stuttering if more than threeguests are looking at him at any given moment, but he has an apparently innatetalent for sweet and unassuming kindness that’s a big hit.  The guests are charmed by his nervousness andthey’re always happy to listen to him talk about his favorite subjects (his sister, his friends, and archery, which he currently can’t afford to do but knowseverything about, in that order). The Natural type.
Honorablemention to Nie Mingjue, who graduated last year and was only partof the host club because Lan Xichen made him. Which is to say, Xichen smiled at him and talked about how gladhe was that Wangji was making friends and how good it would look onMingjue’s college applications as a complement to his more athleticextracurriculars and how happy Huaisang would be to do something withhis brother, and then Mingjue blinked and boom, host club.  He doesn’t have any idea what happened.  Xichen is like that.  The Jock type.
FOUR
NieHuaisang has been Wei Wuxian’s top enabler and partner in chaos since they werein middle school and he also knows everyone and everything despite hisreputation as a top-notch dumbass.  Hisentire rationale for not being part of the host club is that it wouldrequire him to admit to knowing things, and he Won’t, which—top student Wei “IHandle My Adequacy Issues By Being Smart But Also Have Guilt About It” Wuxiandoesn’t totally get that, but sure, okay, proceed.  Huaisang does, however, have anexcellent grasp of how to acquire all manner of strange things, so he is theirone-man supply center for all manner of wild concepts.  One time he got an entire apple treenext-day-shipped just to prove he could.
Also,Huaisang is personally responsible for making most of the host club’s money, because he has a camera and a good sense for the kind of pictures that peoplewill pay for.  Even funneling most of the money back into funding the club activities, Huaisang is still managing to turn a decent profit all told.  He takes a nice 7% cut for himself (friends and family discount), which is half the reason Mingjue didn’t kick up even more of a fuss about it.
Huaisang’svisceral hatred of the head editor of the school paper is the best kept secretin the school but on god Huaisang’s connections are better than that JinGuangyao asshole’s and he’s going to take him down before graduation.
FIVE
Halfwaythrough the school year, Wei Wuxian gets in a car wreck and the way Lan Wangjireacts to being the first number the paramedics find in Wuxian’s phone is informative.  It’s taken five and a half years, four brokenribs, a punctured lung, a concussion, and a spirited yelling sessionfrom Jiang Cheng, among other things, but Wei Wuxian has finally managed to geta clue.
Anda boyfriend.
Nowall they need to do is resolve Huaisang’s vendetta, figure out how the hell afirst year like Xue Yang managed to so comprehensively destroy ex-teacher XiaoXingchen’s reputation, and try and make it to Wen Qing’s graduation on time, and they’re golden.
