Y'all are TRULY sleeping on Hyacinth by S.M. LaViolette. Like, I really enjoyed Phoebe (first book in the series), but Hyacinth is on another level. It features:
--a scarred libertine duke
--a neurodivergent heroine (23 to his 36) who happens to be KILLER at playing cards (in part because she's counting them) and sneaks out at night to play them while dressed as a very awkward young man
--a very casual interest in kink from her that makes him (a kinky man) go "O_O"
--a shockingly fabulous scene in which he tries to get her to admit she's a girl by taking her to a brothel, making her watch two people fuck while sitting beside him, and rattling off like 75 slang phrases for "jerking it" before being like "there's nothing WRONG with it bOY MEN MASTURBATE IN FRONT OF EACH OTHER ALLLL THE TIME" and starting to pull his dick out
--her: "AHHHH NO--YES? NO!"
--RIDING CROPS!
--so MUCH begging from this man, SO. MUCH. BEGGING.
--they're switches, your honor
--squirmy carriage BJs

One day, Queen Clarion decided she needed a new official portrait of all the elder fairies, herself included. And because Pixie Hollow is no longer an underdeveloped village somewhere behind two random stars in the sky, they adapted Mainland's best technologies such as photographs.
Tumblr media
Redleaf: "Hmmm, I look the most important of all of us!"
Snowflake: "That's why I stepped in front of you so that I can outshine your autumn ego."
Sunflower: "Aww, I look like Mainland's next topmodel!!!"
Milori: "I will look even better when I become the king."
Clarion: "I heard you, Milori!"
Hyacinth: "Oh... I forgot to close my mouth! This is a disaster! We have to reshoot it. Right now!"
Clarion: "Oh please, Hyacinth. There's no need to do it again. You look stunning."
Hyacinth: "W-what??"
Milori: "WHAT?!!"
Clarion: "Don't be jealous, Milori. No one can resist the cuteness of this little sparrowman."
Yes, no one. 🥰 Me neither. 💘

15/02/2024-Winchester, Lakeside and home
Photos taken in this set are of; an enchanting early spring floral display of snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils at Winchester Cathedral which was a sight to behold, views at Winchester Cathedral including blossom, a Peregrine probably Winnie at Winchester Cathedral it was great to see her again, Carrion Crow at Winchester Cathedral, one of a couple of colourful Feral Pigeons it was nice to see beside the River Itchen, moon this evening, one of a fair few intricate and stunning sky scenes to take in today this morning and pink blossom emerging out the back this morning.
It was also memorable to see my first snowflakes of the year by the river notably early I'm not sure I'd ever seen snowflakes and the similar snowdrops on the same day before with hyacinths seen nicely again too. Other highlights today included two more crows at the cathedral Magpie and Jackdaw, Woodpigeon, Mallards at Abbey Gardens, House Sparrows in the allotment hedge by Lakeside this morning, Blackbird singing so wonderfully this evening in Winchester, periwinkle and daisy.

Late winter garden selections:
Tumblr media
Daffodils of course. Purposefully planted 15-20 years ago. Such a lovely long-living plant. I've got many varieties scattered here and there but these are the first to bloom.
Tumblr media
Hyacinth. This was a forced-bulb salvage from last spring (someone chucked it after it was spent and I snagged it and planted it). I do love hyacinths, especially the more fragrant ones, but they do seem to get weaker over time in terms of flowering. Even with occasional fertilizer/compost. It might just be my climate. But they're nice while they last.
Tumblr media
Spearmint in the new bed I built this past fall. I had three plants started from cuttings taken from alley-growing plants. All of them survived the winter so it looks like I'll be able to add to my mint tea repertoire this year. (The Kentucky Colonel mint I planted in a different bed has also survived) I've got three large earthboxes permanently planted with peppermint already, but looking forward to the variety.
Tumblr media
And in the same new bed, all five strawberry plants (two purchased and three from runners) made it through the winter. I did dump a lot of straw over it to help with that outcome, but it's nice to see that it worked.
No pic, but the bronze fennel in the same bed seems to also have survived and I've noticed a few seedlings from the load of miscellaneous flower seed (for pollinators) I scattered over everything.
I did get a row of beets planted in the larger bed yesterday and cilantro seed planted in the cold frame today. The eggplant and pepper seedlings are happily growing in my heated bathroom under lights--the tomato seed will get planted later this week.
We're supposed to get a thunderstorm tonight, so I expect to see more things pop up/start flowering with the continued warm weather. (I also set up the rainbarrels. Last spring I waited and there ended up being a drought, which sucked when trying to get transplants going.)

Though the weather is dismal, the joy around Gauthier Farm brought by Eusebia's pregnancy is infectious--especially after Lucan feels the baby move for the first time.
He's so happy he ends up tossing Hyacinth around for a bit, and she loves it. Eusebia loves it too, because it gives her the chance to work on some sewing. Clothes for the new arrival won't make themselves, after all.
