"batman is first and foremost about rehabilitation and the possibility of redemption for everyone-" is he. is he really, though. when he clearly believes "criminal" is some personality trait divorced from circumstances and goes around calling goons "scum" and acts as if killing once, even under extreme circumstances that are not at all their fault, taints someone forever?

and i've said it before but i ... wish that they explored more of rebecca's actions after s1. they mentioned what she did....like twice? as jokes? and yes...YES. she apologized and she grew and i'm not saying that rebecca could never move on from what she did. but the fact that jamie doesn't know he was sent back via rebecca, beard doesn't know he was hired as a joke, the team did have its reputation tanked because of her sabotage, keeley automatically forgave her off screen....... like this isn't me being like "we need to hound her for her actions!!!!" it's just. me wishing they carried it on into the narrative a bit more. i wish they brought it up again

Could I ask for some tidbits about Usva? In particular, I know they’re water/quintessence, so Im curious what their abilities are that relate to that! Maybe also just some trivia that not everyone may know about them? I love that tiny ghoul💜
Right, okay. Let’s start with water since it is their main element.
Usva can conjure water almost anywhere, either gathering it from nearby (lake, air, plants, ground etc) or from ”nowhere” as the element of water is in their being.
On a related note they can move themself with water like Moana in the disney movie. They mostly do it to get themself back in the lake shore after Hiillos yeets them in there. (That’s a whole story.)
One cool ability I also gave them is bloodbending, since blood has water in it Usva is able to manipulate it.
Moving onto quintessence. Usva was unaware of that part of their power until very recently before popping up at the Abbey. It is not their strongest gift but with Astra’s help they’ve learned to control it. Their main use for it is healing. They’re not particularly gifted with the whole ”spiritual” side of it. But it does help them to be able to feel out others moods.
Being a siren and having unknowingly used quintessence their whole life to charm speak and sing they have a strong affinity for vocal healing with quintessence.
Hence why Terzo took interest in them and ended up making them a permanent part of the tour crew to help soothe all the band’s singers vocal cords on tour.
Later Usva became a singing coach at the Abbey.
Some other fun trivia:
- Usva has a back fin and a spiked tail which glow silvery blue. Like Toothless’ back ”spikes” (Idk what to call them) in HTTYD 2
- Usva has a very creature way of moving, think of Valka in HTTYD 2. This comes from being all alone and feral in the Pit since very young.
- Usva has a cat called Cataria.

thinking about jason and dick. thinking about how when jason was robin, dick was too hurt and angry at bruce to really be there for jason as a mentor and older brother. thinking about how dick is with tim, how he very clearly wants to take him in as a younger brother and show him the ropes, and how he and jason could have gotten there, too, if they had more time to figure it out.

JEREMIAH’S DIARY:
Wouldn’t want anyone to think I can’t run my own asylum. Or that Krupper and his stupid devil have me spooked. How dare they riot like that? After everything I’ve done for them...! Obviously I’ve been too lax with them. Too liberal. I’ve treated them like human beings, and they repay me by acting like wild beasts. Perhaps a bit of punishment is what they need...!
Edward Nigma, alias the Riddler, has proved immune to all my treatments. Perhaps if I were to remove his brain one piece at a time, I would find the spot that makes him ask those stupid, irritating riddles.
For Harvey Dent, known as Two-Face, a very special cell where everything is in odd numbers, from the bars in the window to cracks in the ceiling. The man is obsessed with the number two... he wouldn’t be able to stand it.
Mr. Zsasz scars his body each time he kills, a desperate attempt to define himself in terms of what he’s done. Laser surgery can remove them all, leaving him an empty, broken shell...
And for Krupper, who started all this, anything goes! Spray him with toxins. Inject him with weed killer. Dip him in a bath of concentrated organo-phosphates and dry him in quicklime! Er... in the name of mental health, of course. I’m not usually so vindictive.

when it comes to my Bleach/Silmarillion crossover where Maeglin dies, loses his memories and falls into Hueco Mundo (subsequently becoming a hollow)– one of the fun things to come up with is what the FUCK is going on in Arda while Maeglin is gone.
Of course, the second age and third age go as planned, the lord of the rings happens unchanged, because Middle Earth is divorced from the dead. Elves reembody into Aman, not Middle Earth and so no one in ME has any idea that Maeglin is lost to Arda (nor would this fact really change,,, any events).
But in Aman? Tolkien doesn't really talk about what's going on in Aman. In that way it's sort of a blank slate because– are the Feanorian followers allowed to leave the Halls and if they are, how are they settling into society? Who are they giving their loyalty to? Has the system of government changed over the years? What are Teleri-Noldo relations like, several Ages after the First Kinslaying? What is the balance of authority and power like with so many kings, queens and lords stuffed into one land? Who has reembodied and who refuses? How does the absence of well known figures (Finwë, Míriel, Fëanáro and his sons, Celebrimbor, Maeglin, entire generations preceding Finwë) shape politics and healing? Who forgives, who tries to forget, and who holds onto their grudges?
I imagine that at first, no one is looking for Maeglin. Why would they? He just betrayed Gondolin and caused the deaths of a good chunk of people. Those newly-dead aren't going to want to even look at him. Those that survived and sail to Valinor (like Idril) are glad to not see him among the reembodied. They aren't going to look a gift-horse in the mouth and ask questions.
The only ones who would want Maeglin back are his parents.
On the topic of Eöl, I personally find it more interesting if he wasn't evil and his and Aredhel's relationship was happy and healthy for a time. The progression of a paranoid, traumatized parent and husband trying his best to what Eöl ended up doing just. makes a bit more sense to me, especially because I keep the bit of canon where elves can't have kids accidentally. I imagine Eöl passes through the Halls in a matter of decades instead of centuries, not because he is fast to heal, but because being in the domain and under the mercy of a Vala is doing the opposite of helping him. And since he's out before Gondolin falls and lives in solitude, he even doesn't know that Maeglin has died until Aredhel reembodies and personally hunts him down to interrogate him on whether his curse (his prophecy) consigned their son to fading.
It didn't. (With where their son is now, it might have been kinder if it had.)
On Aredhel's end: she searched for her son for years within the Halls before Námo came to her, troubled, and told her that Maeglin is not in his Halls, nor reembodied in Aman, nor wandering Middle Earth– that by all accounts, Maeglin is not in Arda at all. So her son is gone, and her brother is too upset to see it, and Gondolin's people hate him enough that they would celebrate this, and when Aredhel reembodies, her niece tells her she is glad that Aredhel is freed from being bound to evil (her husband) and having borne evil (her son). Her mother embraces her but cannot forgive her for leaving her, her father sees the daughter she was and not the daughter she is, and her other brothers think she grieves having been controlled and misled. No one in her family knows her son and husband as anything but a traitor and her killer– no one in her family knows her as she is now, the Aredhel who left Gondolin and courted a elf who carried grief entangled in his every step in the dark, beautiful forest he claimed as a home. Who lived there of her own free will and had a son of her own free will, and loved them, for all that it ended horribly.
Aredhel has been mistranslated her entire life. She has borne it with what little forgiveness she has. She finds, now, she can bear it no longer.
As time goes on, some members of the family that never met him nearly forget Maeglin ever existed. Reembodied elves of Gondolin write histories of their city and Aredhel stops visiting Tirion entirely for all the stares she receives. There is still no understanding of Aredhel among the Nolofinwions for all their love and she tires of it quicker and quicker. She ends up repairing and renewing her marriage to Eöl (there is much Aredhel can forgive for understanding) and it is not the same as before everything fell apart, but it is theirs.
Maeglin will be gone six Ages before his parents succeed in calling him home. He'll be different too, older, sharper, traumatized, his body strange, but still their child.

@bastxrds (asajj), moved for beta.
Laughing and shaking her head, she shoved her phone back into her pocket and headed towards the restaurant she’d had in mind for food. Usually, she picked something up from the kitchen at work and took it home, but given the fact she was bringing food to Clary she at least wanted something that wasn’t bar food. There was also the fact that she needed to make up for some of the things she’d said. She had been teasing with Red, but words rarely came across on a screen as she wanted them to, and Saj knew she’d upset the other. Hence why she was going across town to get food. A part of her was also curious to find out if the rumours were true. The town was small enough that they all knew each other so something new? It would grab their attention.
With food in hand, she made her way back towards Red’s shop with some interesting news. There was a new space being set up for something and it might give more truth to the rumours they’d heard. “Food’s here,” she announced, stepping through the door into the bakery. It always smelled good walking into the bakery and while she wasn’t one for sweets, she could see why everyone else was. That and Red was just that good. Everyone in town always sent people to her place if they were looking for something in particular. “Saw that new shop everyone seems to be talking about. There’s stuff being setup but no clue as to what it is going in there. Guess we’ll find out eventually.”
Tumblr media
she's mostly teasing - mostly - but the other was definitely hard to read sometimes, & nights like tonight after inventory & variance counts & a whole host of other things that took far too much effort, she didn't have her usual patience to read between the lines for the hidden affection threaded & laced throughout the subtext. she'd just have to take it on faith or be up front, but the other seemed to understand. she was... shockingly good at that.
that, & if anyone could suss out the truth about a new bakery opening, it would be the bar's platonic power couple. some days she wasn't convinced they weren't actually related because Saj & Andy moved in sync in a way that felt otherworldly, but it also meant they tended to share the same headspace when it came to the happenings in their city. if there's a new trendy cupcake place on the books, Saj would probably go to Andy, & Andy would find out. somehow. that's how it seemed to usually work, at any rate.
she jumps out of her skin when Saj announces herself, not even bothering to hide that she'd spilled icing sugar straight down the front of her in her surprise. ' how do you do that? ' Clary manages, laughing & easing the apron off to toss for cleaning. ' I've never met anyone who can walk like a cat in combat boots. ' she frowns in disappointment, but it's brief as the food is also handed over. ' thank you. I was kidding, you realize, but I'm glad you're here. '

What Is Love: A Monologue
Love. An oxymoron in itself. Trusting another person to care for you, but not trusting them enough to care for you fully. Give too much to one person and allow then to break your world like a shattered glass from a 10 story building, or don't give enough and allow the one person who meant everything in this world to you, feel like they don't mean anything and it drives them away.
Love, an oxymoron in itself. The courageous effort to give yourself emotionally to somebody, and trust them not to turn you into a somebody who no longer values kr believes in love. Or the cowardice effort to allow somebody to love you without the intent of fully reciprocating love back, not giving that person their fair chance at love with you because somebody else before them made the journey and experiences of love so difficult for you.
Love.. an oxymoron in itself.. in its true form, it is selfless, honorable, proud, stubborn and extremely patient, despite frustrations, false efforts, negative assumptions, or lack of communication..
I'm not perfect, and I won't ever claim to be.. but I do deserve love, same as you.. I deserve less frustration, more patience.. I deserve best efforts, words of affection and affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts, quality time and physical touch.. as do you.. WE deserve this.. if love ever gets to a point where it becomes you vs me, we should be trying to outscore each other, we should be striving to win the game with each other, we should be trying to make the MLB, the NFL or the NBA All-Star teams through our actions.
Love; an oxymoron in itself. The love, happiness, giddiness, cloud 9, special feeling that turns to pain, frustration, grief, and sadness. An emotional roller coaster if not done properly or careful. While there are many books about "the right way to love" you can never please somebody completely, or so it seems..
..but love is an oxymoron in itself.. do we deserve to fall apart because of our past and insecurities? Or do we owe it to ourselves to prove that love doesn't have to be an oxymoron at all..? I believe in love.. I believe in me.. I believe in you.. but most importantly, I believe in OUR love..

Stupor
--prompt from @nosebleedclub "after hours" (1 August)
"You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here"
But home is too far away; if I wander off to the nearest bus station, I will only tumble down a sewer and wake up amongst eels and rats. The city opens itself too wide to encompass the true believers, digging holes in the pavement
finding their way through the alleyways strewn with dastardly mutated apples and moths flying out of garbage cans trying to find a halo amongst sodium streetlamps.
I'm not salty, though the gold in my hands acted as such--
survival doesn't come in a loose-leaf peach blend, but through black tea steeped seven times over, until I can only drink its leaves and flounder
under the influence of its toxic bitterness. The one which drove me to hide amongst hedonists and criminals.
Vespers already passed, but I haven't said my peace yet--
I went to war against my fantasies, coming out of the bricks like spiders forming a new web.

The thing is though, when you've been writing for *counts on fingers* eight years you realize in those years you've settled down with a writing style that you like, that feels like you. And most readers won't see it, because chances are they only read a fic or two of yours, then forgot about your username, because honestly how many usernames can you remember? And that's fine.
But then there are also a handful (being generous here) of people who read five, or ten, or fifteen, or even more fics of yours, and they start to associate that style with you. These are the people who recognize you in your words and decided that yeah, they like it, so they keep reading. And I think that's when you feel like you've made it.

shein has taken down the selling of the israeli flag, stopped its collaborations with the country's influencers and also cancelled free delivery services to the country. do you know how fucking insidious you have to be for SHEIN to cut ties with you??? SHEIN???!!!
it makes me physically ill. a Palestinian on twitter's last post was about burying their six-year-old cousin without his head. a Palestinian boy on youtube dreamt of 100k subscribers on his gaming channel. and yesterday he reached 500k, but he has been killed in the bombing of the gaza strip. the class of 2023-24 in Palestine has ended early because there are not enough students left alive. literal children who were the teachers, artists, doctors, scientists, scholars, writers, engineers of tomorrow.
when is it enough? statistics released by Palestinian officials about the numbers of martyred isn't enough. photographs and videos of fathers scurrying to piece together their children by gathering their body parts isn't enough. presscons surrounded by dead bodies beside a bombed hospital isn't enough.
yet, somehow, the narrative they are pushing is conflict between two faiths. it is absolutely not. this is no religious conflict. this is colonization, occupation, genocide. it's systematic oppression of Palestine and its people.
the word peace has never angered me as much as it has now. and it should anger you too. there can be no peace under violent oppression. there can be no peace after 75 years of ethnic cleansing. there can be no peace in occupied Palestine.
peace is the product of white supremacy, they prod and kill anyone other than them but when retaliation occurs, it is suddenly rabid savages, unjust savages...

Dungeon Meshi Episode 7 was super interesting from an adaptation standpoint - this'll be a little different from what I usually write about (though I do still talk about the animation in the full video).
Tumblr media
Studio Trigger have never done a straight-up manga adaptation before - and led by Yoshihiro Miyajima, a big fan of the manga who pushed hard for the adaptation to get made, and who has never directed a full series before, it was unclear if they'd be able to find the right balance between a simple panel-for-panel recreation and making something that's completely different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And in the first few episodes, you could really feel the tension between the influence of a cautious young creative with great respect for the source material, and a studio with a unique established visual style. It kinda seemed like they were ping-ponging willy-nillily between the two sides of that spectrum.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But this episode showed that Miyajima (and series writer Kimiko Ueno) can take 3 chapters, slice them up and rearrange them into a cohesive-feeling episode while taking into account the differences between screen and page, and using them to their advantage.
Starting with the way the water looks. This line from the manga describes a faint magical glow to the water in this lake and you can see that the cavern fades into darkness above, but Kui's illustration style doesn't really define lighting and shadows very much compared to the cel-drawing style of animation. So the animators took the opportunity to use the water as the light source, and make a whole episode that's lit almost entirely from below. It really gives an otherworldly feeling to this area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Particularly when the Kelpie shows up, that under-lighting works wonders to define its anatomy within the relatively simple line art.
Tumblr media
What do you do when you can't show the immense fuck-off scale of a monster with a beautiful full-page spread like this?
Well you use what you do have: the ability to move the camera instead. This is such a great way to communicate the scale of this thing, AND such a great way to show some of Senshi's anime-original butt-cheeks!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is one of my favorite shots from this episode - this whole sequence is super hectic, cutting quickly from character to character, but they use tricks like this to keep you from getting confused. This is framed much like it is in the manga, but with the moving image, they're able to use the trajectory of the fish head in the background to lead your eye directly from Chilchuck, right to the point where Senshi pops up in the foreground and transition seamlessly from one character to another!
Tumblr media
Now, it's not all good - I am a bit disappointed that they removed Marcille's own Senshi-style soap-making montage, which was the perfect visual representation of the culmination of the character development and understanding built between Senshi and Marcille.
Tumblr media
It's a shame to see it go.
I get more into that, what else was cut, and much more in this video where I broke down the entire episode!
Check it out if you feel like it. If you don't, jump in a ditch, cover yourself in leaves and jump out at people as they walk by.
Thanks for reading!
