and the third instalment in all our favourite show: i think too deeply about richard campbell gansey the third and his mint leaves. this will follow the same route as the others, and as such, it is a list (and pseudo-analysis) of every time mint is mentioned in conjunction with gansey in bllb (post 1 and post 2)

the first time is after noah has his freakout in the office of blue’s guidance counsellor and she goes to monmouth

“Blue arrived at Monmouth Manufacturing before anyone else. She knocked to be sure, and then let herself in. Immediately, she was enveloped with the comfortable scent of the room: the faded library-smell of old books, the cool odor of mint, the must-and-rust scent of century-old brick and ancient pipes, the note of funk from the heap of dirty laundry against the wall.”

(gansey’s home smells of mint, this still makes me sad)

the second time is after he and malory arrive at monmouth and they start talking about Iolo Goch and who he was to glendower

“He paused to locate a tiny microwave. He examined the interior of a mug before filling it. Pulling a mint leaf from his pocket to suck on, he spoke around it as the water heated. “Really, if Glendower were Robin Hood, Iolo Goch would have been … that other guy.””

(i think there is so many interpretations that could be made about this scene, it’s so interesting to see him do what we can establish is a nervous habit and coping mechanism for when he feels very anxious while talking about one of his favourite things) (something something actually finding glendower was his worst nightmare) 

the third time is just a few paragraph after that when he finishes with the tea

“He turned, mug in hand, and suddenly they were an inch apart. She could smell the mint in his mouth. She saw his throat move as he swallowed.”

(once again, many interpretations. We know he chews absently when he’s immersed in something while anxious so it would make sense to assume that he chews quickly when he’s feeling very anxious about something. making a cup of tea in the microwave doesn’t take long. thoughts thoughts) 

the fourth time is after noah has another freakout and blue pulls the plug on him

“Noah sat in the middle of the floor, papers all around him, a mint plant spilling dirt by his hand. He was all hunched over and shadowless, his form slight and streaky, barely visible at all. He was crying again.”

(notable about this is that it says A mint plant. not THE mint plant or GANSEY’S mint plant singular like it did in previous books. from this i think it’s safe to establish that there’s more than one mint plant in this room) (no im not ready to talk about noah yet okay)

the fifth time is after blue has her argument with orla about loving the raven boys

““You know what I think, Orla? I think you’re a big, fat bully —” Blue barreled right into Gansey, who had stepped inside the front hall. For a moment she smelled mint, felt the solidness of his chest, and then she wheeled back.”

(not very notable on its own, i know, but it adds to the immediate association these characters have between gansey and mint)

The sixth through ninth time is the car ride when he and blue talk about just wanting to pretend they could be together and kiss

““Blue,” he warned, but his voice was chaotic. This close, his throat was scented with mint and wool sweater and vinyl car seat, and Gansey, just Gansey.”

(gansey, just gansey, is so very closely tied with mint to the people who love him and who he loves in return)

““And then we never speak of it again,” Gansey said, mocking himself softly, and Blue was so glad of it, because she had played the words from that night over and over in her mind and wanted to know he had, too. Gently he tucked her hair behind her ears — this was a fool’s errand, because it had never been behind her ears to begin with and wouldn’t stay. But he did it again and again, and then he took out two mint leaves and put one in his mouth and one in hers.”

(oooh the things i could say about this miniscule part of this scene alone but let's keep it short, they’re doing something they promised both each other and themselves not to, they’re meeting in secret in the middle of the night, everything about this is something that would lead to gansey feeling an enormous amount of anxiety even if he feels happy to get to be with blue,, and then he’d probably feel guilty about the happiness and it would lead him to spiral into more mint) (and let’s not talk about how it was probably him trying to in some misguided way make her feel better about meeting in secret through doing and sharing something that he uses to cope when he feels bad and can’t talk about it)

“She rolled the mint leaf over and over her tongue. She felt shivery with cold or fatigue.”

“Now he exhaled, but he didn’t disagree. The clock in the Camaro didn’t work, but it had to be dangerously close to morning. They switched places; Blue curled again in his coat, feet up on the seat. As she tugged the collar up to cover her mouth and nose, she let herself imagine that this place was rightfully hers. That somehow Adam and Ronan already knew and were already okay with it. That her lips carried no threat. That Gansey was not going to die, that he wasn’t going to leave for Yale or Princeton, that all that mattered was that he had given her his coat with its wheatgrass and mint on the collar.” 

(wheatgrass and mint, the smell that, to blue, IS gansey)

the tenth time is after they bring gwenllian back to fox way and leave her to live there.

“Gansey put a mint leaf in his mouth; it was impossible to not think of the night before, when he’d put one in hers. “She stays here, for now. That wasn’t me, that was Persephone. I offered to fix the first floor of Monmouth. That might still end up being what happens.””

(yes i know this has more romance than anxiety but bear with me. he’s still in an anxious and uncomfortable situation he doesn’t feel in control over. he’s worried and scared. also the car ride and his feelings for blue (even though she makes him quiet) would probably lead to him feeling guilty and etc since he’s keeping things from his friends and lying to them)

the eleventh and last time in bllb is when he and blue are hugging after she starts to cry when calla and the others leave to go get maura from the cave

“He pulled back, wincing through pins and needles, and gave her a mint leaf before sitting back against the bed frame beside her.”

(“he could not tell who was comforting who” so what does he do when blue is feeling anxious and afraid and he’s not good with words or comfort? he does the only thing he knows how, the only thing that he knows would help comfort him in times like these, he doesn’t leave her and he gives her a mint leaf)

Dan absolutely despised his parole at first, but honestly this is a blast. Sure, he’s stuck in the form of a cat, a kitten even, but he’d found an absolutely wonderful companion. Partner. Ally? Baby Chaos Lord? He’d work on it. 

Klarion is just happy to have found such a great familiar, he even named them Teekl II, which is a great name thank you very much hero-babies! So now he has two Teekl familiars, and Teekl II always gets so gleeful whenever they successfully pull a prank! He even has his own fire magic which is so fun! 

Danny is not happy to get thrown into another world, stuck as a kitten. He’s also not pleased to have found a sick baby liminal, but fine. If this is what he’s supposed to deal with then he’ll deal with it! Even if he has to be a familiar for a teeny tiny bit of time. It’s fine, and the dude has a pocket he can peek out of on his coat. 

Jason has no idea where this kitten came from but the Pit is being surprisingly chill about it. Something about a baby? Whatever, he’s made the furball a little matching outfit and they like to sit in his pockets and peer out. No idea how Cat Hood is making the shadows all spooky now or why the eyes went from blue to green, but whatever. 

Ellie is utterly delighted in this situation. She was just wandering, but now she’s a lil fluffy kitten, and ended up landing on this kid’s head. This magic kid’s head! He even has a talking tiger friend too! So cool! She’s definitely sticking with him! This will be so fun!

Billy was worried about making sure the kitten got food, she’s so tiny! Mr Tawny is a big help though, and apparently she’s his familiar now that he’s given her a mortal name? He doesn’t fully understand but apparently she’s connected to his magic now, if the shouts from the gods are anything to go by. Look, an electric cat is cool. Pakhet is amazing, and Fawcet thinks it’s adorable that Marvel has a kitten clinging to his shoulder

Re-watching the first kiss scene again… and I just love all the times that Tommy smiles.

He first smiles after Buck responds that “yeah, that works” to his “like that?” question. And it's because even though Buck had kissed him back, he needed to be sure that it had been ok. So, when Buck replies in positive, he can't help but smile because he is happy that Buck seems to like him back and that him taking the risk of kissing him paid off.

Tommy then asks him if it was ok (I love how he asks again, he really wanted to make sure) and when Buck jokes, Tommy laughs, relaxing fully, and he gets the courage to ask him out on a date. While he is asking him, really during that entire part of the conversation, even though he tries to be serious (and he looks at Buck's lips with longing and desire and fixes Buck's shirt), you can see a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth pretty much all the time, because again he cannot help but be happy about it!

Finally, once they confirmed that they are seeing each other on Saturday, he walks to the door with a big smile and he even shakes his head a little bit, as if he can't believe that any of that just happened. He kissed Buck, he kissed this guy that he had been interested in since they met. And Buck kissed him back, and they will go on a date… And he is just so happy and giddy about it!

And I just love them a lot, ok?

I have...many thoughts about this, and I'll start by saying that first off, I don't know how Endless pregnancy works, like if it needs to be intentional or if accidents happen. After all, Desire slept with Unity and got her pregnant while she was sleeping (which is very icky since she couldn't consent outside of whatever perfect dream life Desire was making her live). For the purpose of this, though, we'll say that accidents can happen, because I feel like Morpheus is still so scarred after everything that happened with Orpheus that he would be worried about having another child.

TWs for pregnancy, AFAB!reader, and copious amounts of sweetness. You've been warned.

You're panicking, for one

After all, you're not even married! You're still "courting," as Morpheus calls it

Though you try to remain composed when you tell him, you almost immediately start crying

Morpheus is so, so scared, but you look even more scared, and you're also the one who's carrying the child, so he pushes aside his own fear to comfort you

Even beneath his own fear, though, he finds himself overjoyed

He had loved being a father, even though, as Orpheus got older, he found he wasn't very good at it

Morpheus wants another chance, he realizes; he wants to be better

Knowing what he wants though, he keeps it to himself and tells you that he'll support you in whatever choice you make

(but is thrilled when you decide to keep the baby)

Immediately tries to propose to you, but you turn him down

Not because you don't love him and don't plan on marrying him, but because you refuse to be someone who gets married only so that they don't have a child out of wedlock

After the baby's born, you assure Morpheus, he can propose again

Doesn't understand why you insist on seeing human doctors when he has healers renowned across every realm at his disposal

Still, he accompanies you to your first ultrasound and quickly finds himself perturbed by the odd devices that are laid out and being used

When the technician finally locates your womb with the ultrasound wand, and the screen goes from nothing to suddenly having that distinct fetus form on it, Morpheus understands. Where else would you get an experience like this?

He cries when he hears the baby's heartbeat fill the room

Hates that you suffer from morning sickness, because there's absolutely nothing that he can do about it

So he helps in the ways that he can: holding your hair back if it's long enough to need to be held, making sure you stay hydrated, and trying to force you to eat whenever you think you can stomach it

Convinces you to finally move to the Dreaming, though you mourn your independent life in the Waking

But in the Waking you're not just pregnant, you're pregnant and alone

Just one of those things is hard. But both? That feels almost impossible, especially when you have a partner waiting for you

Though you love being in the same realm with Morpheus all the time now, you do have plans to have a part-time home in the Waking after the baby is born

Even though they'll technically be a prince/princess, you want them to have normal childhood experiences—school and soccer (or whatever sport/activity they'd like to do) and walks to the park or the public library

Speaking of the realm, it seems as though every denizen knows and is thrilled that there's going to be a baby soon

You try and go on walks daily, whether alone or with Morpheus, and practically every dream creature you pass smiles or asks you how you're feeling

He looks so proud whenever he's witness to it

(Don't even get me started on Lucienne and Matthew)

Having cravings is way better when the Dreamlord is your baby daddy

You're in tears because you so badly want a random meal that you saw once in a TV show? Morpheus is pulling it from the showrunner's dreams for you

He will do literally anything to make you happy and make this pregnancy as easy on you as possible

The mood swings suck because you know that you're being mean or irrational, but Morpheus takes it all in stride and indulges you instead of fighting back, something that you really want him to do

Thinks you are the most beautiful being alive, even when you get self-conscious as your body starts to change

Though he's always loved you in a way that's all-consuming and passionate, now, that love is almost worshipful now

How could he not worship you? You're carrying his child, you're growing life within you. He's so thankful to you, and this gift that you're giving him.

Morpheus has never been particularly tactile, but now, he almost always has a hand on you/your belly

Like, when you first get a baby bump, dude is obsessed

He can't tear his eyes away from the sight

Even though you're in the Dreaming, you still have to sleep, a lot more now that you're pregnant

When you're sleeping (or when Morpheus thinks you're asleep), he'll press his lips to your stomach and talk to the baby

He tells them how wanted they are, all of the things that he can't wait to show them, to teach them

He tells them of their brother, of his talent for music and the songs he would sing, of his heart, full of endless love for everyone. He tells them how much their brother would have loved to be a brother. He promises, to both of his children, that he'll learn from his mistakes

It never fails to make you tear up when you're only pretending, and you almost feel a little guilty intruding on these sacred chats

As your pregnancy progresses, Morpheus can practically sense when you're uncomfortable almost before you realize it

He's more than happy to step behind you, place both his hands under your belly, and lift to relieve you of the pressure for a little bit

It's a trick he's rather proud of, and one he picked up from some pregnancy book (which he will not admit to reading even though you saw a stack of them next to his designated chair in the library)

For a couple of weeks, he disappears for at least two hours every day

Even Lucienne refuses to tell you where he is (that at least lets you know that it's nothing bad, because Lucienne would tell you if it was)

He brings you to a nursery that he created, with as much love and care as he does with all his creations, for your child

It's so sweet and has everything you could need, from a comfy rocking chair in the corner with a window bathing soft light onto it to a bookshelf (predictable) with all sorts of children's stories from throughout time and cultures and realms

The best part is the ceiling—the galaxy of his throne room, which you love so much, has been extended here, for your child to lose themself in

(It's stunning, but you both know that the baby will likely sleep in your shared room for a while; neither of you can bear the thought of being parted from your child for even a few hours)

It cannot be stressed enough just how excited Morpheus is to have a baby with you, and I could go on for another 50 bullet points about the subject

ok sure i'll talk about farleigh start. i'll talk about his tragedy of never being enough as it were and then having to deal with fucking oliver. sure. disclaimer: it's about class (and race) and the horrible reality of the rich. the horrible reality of living as farleigh.

another disclaimer: i'm white! and poc definitely pick up on everything i'm talking about here as it is, and better. i was and am specifically interested in farleigh vs. oliver but it's impossible to examine without considering race. definitely let me know if anything abt this sucks!

farleigh and oliver are similar. it's annoying because every intruder that is not himself is annoying, partly because felix's attention swaying from farleigh is dangerous; there is always a threat of being discarded, even if no precedent existed. the potential is terrifying.

but you'd think he's seen this before, every summer (if venetia is telling the truth) or at least often enough to learn to recognize it fast, so he should know this will pass. part of it is i think still the deep anxiety, and i think he hated every boy that was there before, and it is sort of routine.

but definitely a huge factor in farleigh's annoyance is the fact that he's a biracial (black for cattons, that's all they see) man in a white rich household. he's alert and exhausted all the time. of course he's angry at oliver, regardless of whether he's the first to crash at saltburn for the summer or the fifty-first.

but the important thing is this.

farleigh is very jealous of and angry and pissed at oliver because farleigh sees all the similarities between them. outsider, in financial trouble, whatever it is, in need of cattons; and yet oliver is preferred. and farleigh seems to be the only one to really consider it. felix does not pick up on the hint when farleigh brings up the birthday party vs. his mother. felix's clumsy "different or... anything like that" is as much about race as it is about class, of course. the "we've done all that we can" bit is felix absolving himself of guilt because surely they had, surely the mysterious collective cattons that he's not really part of had tried all they could do. to him, farleigh is different from oliver, because farleigh has been helped. felix is rich and white and twofold uncomfortable with farleigh, even if he's nice about it, even if he genuinely enjoys his company; he doesn't look too close at farleigh because he feels too guilty to come too close. and farleigh can't do anything about it. he can't nice himself into it. the fucking tragedy of him is that he's never enough in the world of the ultra-rich white, even if (especially because!) he's born into it.

farleigh is very pissed at oliver because farleigh also sees all the differences between them. you know who can be nice poor white enough to fit in? fucking oliver. felix says "just be yourself, they'll love you" when oliver first moves in. farleigh was also probably told the same thing, and felix also probably believed that farleigh could just be himself, but even if the cattons were magically not racist at all (impossible), it wouldn't make a difference to farleigh. he would still self-censor, keep in check, be in dangerous waters (because racism is not just about the individual, but about the system). we see that he'd won himself leeway by years of trial and error by the way he speaks to the family, but it's still within the boundaries of acceptable, built by the cattons. he's part of them because they allow it, and farleigh is very, very aware.

the annoying thing is oliver can be himself. like, truly, genuinely, he can just be. and farleigh can't help but envy that.

as a side note, oliver is obviously jealous of farleigh in the beginning as well, because regardless of the reality of farleigh's situation, he was born into it, and hence, at least in oliver's mind, has his position solidified. oliver's whole thing is unquenchable thirst and hunger for whatever and everything the cattons have (including themselves!). he wishes to have been a catton from birth. to oliver, at first, there's nothing farleigh can really do to lose it. and until he figures out the cattons completely, he can't help but envy that.

but i think farleigh senses something different about oliver early on. at least on the level of the text, we have "you're almost passing [for] a real, human boy", which is so important because farleigh is the first to point out oliver's weirdness. the next to do so is venetia in the bath scene calling him a freak, but it's too late. farleigh is too early.

and i like to think he clocks oliver too early because he sees the jagged edges that he recognizes in himself. i think that one other thing that farleigh envies is oliver's freedom to let go. freedom to let go is very similar to freedom to be, but not quite the same.

to be is about perception: farleigh knows he cannot fall out of line, but would like to, and oliver does not have to worry about it at all (i mean, he does, because oliver also performs for felix, but farleigh doesn't know that).

to let go is about the self: farleigh is too scared to even want what oliver eventually does, to even consider the possibility. oliver can let himself want. oliver can let himself act. oliver just can do things and want things. i'm not sure farleigh can.

and so in this scene, when oliver's wants and actions have landed him nowhere with farleigh, felix, venetia, the cattons, of course farleigh gloats. he can let himself do that, because if the cattons are slowly discarding him, farleigh can allow himself this one small victory. he's relieved because despite the dangerous similarities, oliver is, thankfully, not really the same as farleigh, right?

but like. this movie is a love letter to all things gothic. oliver is a white man. he prevails. the brief performance that oliver put on did eventually end up more effective than farleigh's lifetime of constraint. my heart fucking breaks for him to be honest.

the issue that remains is the fact of farleigh's survival. i like to think that oliver came to respect him. oliver is smart, but farleigh is clever. he picks up on everything oliver does (to refer back to the karaoke scene, farleigh immediately retaliates in the cleverest way, in the moment), and he's the only one to do so consistently (venetia, again, for example, comes close, but too late; oliver doesn't like that, there's nothing to work with). hence, stay with me for a little longer, the paradox: farleigh survives because he was never enough for the cattons, but he is very worthy of oliver's attention. in his own freaky way, oliver wants him. look at that.

so. farleigh. farleigh might come back. he always comes back. and i think oliver wants to try harder next time.

Yukine's journey toward acceptance of the life that was robbed of him, this time with finality, exemplifies the emotional and beautifully rendered arc that has defined his character.

Yukine finally accepting the reality of his death. Yukine stepping out from the fridge that contained memories of what was once his life. Yukine freeing himself from the shackles of his trauma. Yukine running to protect the person who cherished him the most in the world. Yukine standing up to an abusive father. Yukine wholeheartedly apologizing. Yukine's growth, and Yato tearing up as he stretches his little arms to pull him for an embrace.

Yukine's gratitude for what Yato did for him is evident throughout the series. He was given a name more precious than any other. He was treated like a human--an ordinary teenage boy. And life after that was one exciting journey after another. Now, Yukine can no longer be entirely consumed by the horrors of his past because he knows that his reality with Yato is so much brighter. Far brighter.

Yukine could break out from that refrigerator because of the true, sincere, and nurturing love shown by the only father figure in his life. Yato has said multiple times throughout the series that Yukine was his priority above all else, and Yukine was the only person he swore to protect the most. Hell, he even went straight to hug him after Yukine apologized for turning into that form! Yato did not need to summon Yukine. Yukine came to protect Yato on his own decision. As he always did.

The journey to their healing will be painful, and this chapter shows that Yato and Yukine will face it together. No more secrets and no more miscommunications. They will help and be by each other's side as they always have, not only as god and shinki but, this time, as family.

first of all, there is a REASON why all his films are ANIMATED, animation can do things live action will never be able to no matter how much shitty CGI effects you pump into it

secondly, given how any possible ghibli influence in totk is so clearly purely a superficial attempt of copying aesthetics and NOTHING more is making me more convinced that movie will be shit

miyazakis works have been reduced to whimsical childrens fantasy with a specific kind of aesthetic in the mindset of many and i HATE it, its so much more than that and seeing how much totk has been compared to it, again, purely bc of some aesthetics reminiscent of his movies is still driving me nuts

the zelda series, especially the most recent entry, is very clearly lacking in everything that miyazaki excels at and i am not confident that anyone in higher positions whos working on that darn movie understands any of it and will just go for the usual copying of surface level aesthetics tm
