Sketch of Bilbo Baggins! He is so happy at this point in the movie. I love Tolkien's work very much and I want to capture my love in this drawing. There is still a lot of work ahead (aligning lines, adding shadows and a bunch of other things) but I'm already inspired

I'm about 95% sure that Thorin is a virgin.
Just think about it, while still in Erebor he was for one very young & not of age for a dwarf and also s royal, so no fucking around cus no one wants roysl bastards & it's not "seemly" and he's never really alone.
Then, after Smaug, he kind of had other things to do? Once of age he was already a king, can't just fuck around then either, and also he had to find and build a new home, so there's no time or mental nor emotional capacity for hooking up let alone love.
And with the years he builds this wall around himself to protect his fragile lil heart and let's no one close enough & is used to always expecting the worst from people, meaning seeing ulterior motives in every possible advance.
So yeah, Thorin is a blushing virgin, had maybe not even kissed someone, and the company tones down their dirty stories around him because they think his frown to be angry and about being "improper", when in truth he is just really uncomfortable because he does not even know what some of those words mean.
Protect my precious baby king & give him LOVE!!!

‣ pairing: Legolas x Maid/Healer!reader
‣ words: 1639
‣ content: basically childhood friends, unbalanced power dynamic, Legolas is a littleee jealous and petty (as in like… a lot), Legolas being too clingy and a little questionable, suggestive near the end, pleading men <3
──────────────────
‣ summary: Legolas had chosen you to be by his side from first glance. Even before he could wield a bow, he saw through your status and deemed your soul the same as his. However, his affection for you can be a bit… suffocating.
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
Legolas had claimed you before he even knew your name. Call it fate if you will, but something indescribable had seized him the moment you were presented to his father. Like a ripe fruit you had been plucked from your cozy orphanage and displayed in front of the king. At the time you were not sure why you were in this place, a grand castle decorated with exquisite, flourishing fauna and marble cleaned so well it glinted in the sunlight, yet the prince very well knew. A nobody you were— simply an Elven child of mixed blood who had been found abandoned in Mirkwood’s forests— yet your excellence had soon shown itself in your healing. With a few whispered prayers and hands delicately placed, a wound could vanish within minutes. This is why you were here.
Mirkwood was exceptionally skilled in archery, but what was gained in one area was lost in another. The kingdom had healers, like many, yet none that could heal a wound with their own hands. So it was a surprise that you, an unassuming child, had been blessed with the gift of life. It did not take a council to decide that your gift must be fostered and taken care of like the most delicate sprout.
Although your skill was doted on, you, however, were not. You were an elf of mixed blood— the classic story of a rebellious Elven man who had seduced a human woman before vanishing for The Undying Lands was not unique. The story between an elf and human royalty was one that was respectable, yet this was not yours.
Although your royal guidance was intended to help you grow in your healing abilities, it became increasingly obvious your current job was not to heal the innocent. Instead, you were frequently assigned the task of assisting the prince after his rebellious endeavors. From healing his scraped knee after he hurled himself off a tree to even pouring his tea, you were practically his maid at this point.
However, Legolas did not see it as this— you did a lot for him, yes, but he found himself frequently getting into trouble and calling upon your help purposefully, simply longing for your care and attention. He did not have many other young elves to involve himself with, and you were perfectly fine as company. He even admired you, in fact, especially as he watched you use your healing gift on him. You both were taught basic skills such as how to wield a bow and how to analyze Elvish texts, yet you were oftentimes dragged away for additional training in your healing. Times like these he wondered if he was too dependent on you.
And now the prince, far past his coming-of-age ceremony, still wondered the same as he scanned the halls for your presence. His boots could be heard clicking against the pristine floor from even a man on the other side of the castle as he paced the area. Elves from Rivendell had arrived to discuss matters on the group of dwarves headed to reclaim their home from Smaug, and you were nowhere to be seen. Embarrassed to make his affection for you so obvious, he excused his worry as simply making sure you were not late to greet the guests.
“Y/N! Y/N, where in Middle-Earth have you wandered off to now?” He shouted, perhaps to himself. The maids rushing down the hallway did not give him a mere glance. His worry for you was not only typical, but also a frequent point of gossip. He let out a loud sigh and turned, frustrated, finally giving up in his search. He would definitely receive a scolding from his father at this point. Perhaps it would be worth it if only to share the burden of being late between the two of you. He hurriedly retraced his trail to the entrance of the castle, hoping the guests would still be there, yet he abruptly stopped as laughter floated through the halls.
He peered around the wall and outside into the garden, which held the source of the sound, and scowled at the sight he saw. You and one of the Rivendell elves— pale-skinned with hair various shades of hickory, undoubtedly one of Elrond’s sons— sitting on a bench and chatting— No, flirting. It was obvious with the way he was leaning into you, your face lit with joy at the jokes he charismatically threw. The sight was enough to make Legolas seethe with jealousy.
“Y/N.”
The unexpected sound of your name prompts you to jump a bit before looking towards the blond elf. You smile at the familiar face. “Legolas! Where have you been? The guests are already seated.”
“Well, that I would not know. I have been looking for you since I noticed your absence,” Legolas makes his way towards the two of you, eyeing the dark-haired elf as if he were goblin trash. “I see you have acquainted yourself with one of our dear guests.”
You rub the back of your neck apologetically, oblivious to the stare-down happening between the two. “Ah, I apologize. I was at the entrance long before they arrived, although I should have noticed you beforehand to ease your worries.”
Legolas is the first to break the glare, quickly changing his expression to one more gentle, more suitable to one as pure of heart as you. He crouches down to provide you comfort. “Of course. My worry for you is natural, yet it’s nothing to burden yourself with. May I?” The Elven prince takes your hand and holds it firm before you can even respond, almost as if the other may rip you away.
“Yes, but—“ You begin to protest as you look back towards the Rivendell elf, but he is the one to speak next.
“No worries, it is time we all join each other in the dining hall.” He huffs, clearly defeated. It is the prince of the kingdom he is visiting, after all.
And with that, Legolas guides you with him to the dining hall. The other merely trails behind in surrender.
With the rest of the night, Legolas is strangely distant. As you make your rounds offering tea to each elf, Legolas holds his hand over his teacup without so much as a simple “No, thank you.” Instead of contributing to the council like a respectable prince, he stays oddly silent and tightens his jaw in what seems to be annoyance. After a considerable time of him being obviously troubled about something, you follow his incomprehensible glare across the lengthy table to the elf you were speaking to earlier. You observe from the sidelines, expecting his glare to waver, yet it lingers. The other elf just seems to uncomfortably avoid eye contact. Even Thranduil notices enough to make an occasional irritated side glance at his son.
You simply excuse it as a harmless quarrel between princes.
⋅•⋅⊰∙∘☽༓☾∘∙⊱⋅•⋅
As the moon exudes her care across the darkened kingdom, Legolas can not seem to quiet his mind as he lays down to rest. His eyebrows tense and his chest tightens at the image of the Rivendell elf practically courting you, and you enjoying it. The thought of you being carried away back to Rivendell by this elf seemed none other than a nightmare. And perhaps it was still possible— the Rivendell group had settled for staying in the guest chambers tonight— perhaps he was making his way to your chamber at this moment. He would knock on your door, gently, as to not startle you, the way Legolas had done so many times before— you would answer, dressed in silk, hair ruffled by your pillowy sheets. In a heartbeat he would confess his attraction from the moment he saw you. You would fall into his arms and he would hold you, softly, as if the dream could break. You both would join lips in a passion, and soon enough you would be his.
And soon enough Legolas is making his way to your door— not too far of a journey, considering your chambers are right next to each other. He pauses for a moment, and two, before he gathers the courage to lightly knock on the wooden door. He awaits your presence, a burning inside his core threatening to swallow him whole. As he waits, his mind trails to his previous nightmare. Perhaps he is too late, he thinks, perhaps this is a mistake—
And soon enough you are there, in front of him, dressed in silk and your hair ruffled from your pillowy sheets. He stands there for a moment, silent and flustered.
“Well?” You sigh sleepily, rubbing your eyes at your interrupted slumber, “Are you alright?”
He sighs. With eagerness or longing you cannot tell. “Tell me you do not want him.” He bluntly states, his mouth moving faster than his brain. He grips both sides of your doorway, leaning towards you, keeping himself from joining you into an embrace. You can see his knuckles nearly turn white.
Your eyes are wide now, confused. “Who— sorry?”
“The Rivendell elf. You do not want him. He is an adventurer, he knows no home. He is not right for you, I assure you, he knows nothing about you. You are just a pretty face to him, but I— I…” He pauses, gasps for air as if he has almost drowned, and completely stops at a loss for words.
You stare at him a moment, his eyes wild and pleading. From the soft gazes he’s given you when teaching you how to correctly hold a bow to the seething glare you saw from him last night, this is unlike anything you’ve seen.
“Legolas…” you begin, but words cannot fathom what you want to say. Instead you lift your hand to tuck a strand of hair behind his pointed ear, gazing at him with newfound vulnerability. The back of your hand trails down his neck before resting on his chest. “He is not the one I want.”

The sun set hours ago… Lake-town was cold enough during the day and when the sun came down, it felt like a winter storm.
Bard was preparing to set off to collect fish again. He hated leaving for so long and coming home for a day or two, it broke his heart whenever he had to tell his children he was leaving again.
Bard climbed the wooden planks and up to the rooftop where his young son, Bain, sat. He leaned back, his head up towards the sky with widened eyes.
“Come Bain, it’s cold.” Bard said, his arms resting on the rooftop. “It’s time for bed.”
Bain turned to his father. “Da, is the dragon gonna come for us? Like the one in the stories you told us?”
Bard hopped onto the rooftop, kneeling to his son. “No, son. The dragon sleeps within Erebor. It has for a hundred years.”
But Bain pointed to the sky. “But there’s one.”
Bard followed his finger and squinted. He felt his heart drop when he saw the shadowy figure soaring through the sky. He could barely make out the size or his wingspan.
A gasp left his lips as he grabbed his son’s shoulders. “Go, go inside.” He demanded, pushing him. But his eyes remained on the dragon. “Quickly now.”
Watching him take a couple of laps around the Lonely Mountains. His heart raced, was the dragon trying to tempt Smaug? He followed his son inside, trying to remain calm for his children.
He didn’t see the dragon descend towards Mirkwood.
The dragon flapped his wings as he touched the ground, sending out a cloud of dust, twigs, and leaves out of his way.
The dragon grumbled as the guards surrounded him. “Rȳbās.” His rider told him, taking off the leather belts that held her to the saddle. “Lykirī.”
The dragon bent his neck, allowing the rider to dismount. She smiled rather widely, running her hands along his scaly neck and to his head.
She placed her hand under his eye, seeing her reflection in his eye. She laughed as her dragon rumbled under her touch, she placed her forehead onto his skin, closing her eyes, humming a soft tune.
Tauriel approached her with a stern expression. Usually, she would happily greet her but considering that nobody was supposed to be leaving Mirkwood, let alone at midnight, she was frustrated.
“The King does not like repeating himself.” Tauriel warned her, coming close even if the dragon seemed to be displeased. “No one is allowed to leave unless granted.”
She pulled back from her dragon and turned to face her, the smile still on her face. “Aegar is more than big enough to saddle two. I know how much you love the sky.”
Taruiel shook her head in disappointment. “Come, the King wishes to speak to you.” She walked with some of the guards, two waiting for her.
She sighed and followed her, leaving Aegar to lay and rest.
She may have been here her entire life, but the Kingdom of Mirkwood never ceased to amaze her. They have been friends for her entire life as Tauriel was the one who taught her how to use a bow from a young age.
They walked arm in arm through the halls of Mirkwood. Tauriel found herself unable to contain her laughter and smile.
“It is difficult to understand you.” Tauriel giggled. “Do you take pleasure in seeing all of us scramble to locate you?”
(Y/n) grinned sheepishly. “Admit it. You wish to ride a dragon.”
“I believe I’m content with seeing you fly.”
“Your loss.” She pushed her lightly. “So tell me, how angry is he?”
(Y/n) then pulled her arm back as they approached the throne room, Thranduil sat there, observing a jewel in his hands.
Tauriel took her leave but not before looking back at her, her smile had faded but she remained calm. Tauriel left before Thranduil could say anything else to her.
“(Y/n).” Thranduil’s voice was calm yet assertive. But there was an edge of frustration. “You know how I feel about these reckless flights of yours. And to venture out without my permission, disappointing.”
(Y/n) bowed her head, her gaze focused on the floor. “Forgive me, My Lord.” She replied. “Yet you don’t allow me to go flying with your permission.”
Thranduil sighed heavily, pinching the bridge of his nose. “You must remember there are dangers out there, worse than what Aegar poses. You dare fly close to Erebor? Are you asking to battle with Smaug? A dragon three or more times larger than Aegar. He may be a dragon but you are not.”
(Y/n) straightened, lifting her head to meet his eyes. “Aegar is strong, he is loyal. I wouldn’t dare use him as a weapon.”
“The time is coming, (Y/n). You are a formidable soldier, you two make quite a team.” Thranduil admitted. But with a wave of his hand, he dismissed her. “Take a bath, you stink of dragon.”
It has been several days since Thranduil warned (Y/n). His words lingered in her head.
She shouldn’t have to feel frustrated with him, afterall, he was the one to find the items left behind by your family.
There were many things gifted to her when she was old enough to read. Books of her great- great- something grandfather’s handwriting, it was worn, some words difficult to read.
Before she even learned of High Valyrian, she thought the words were a remembrance of her home or maybe her family. But no.
It was far from it. A warning.
Zaldrīzes buzdari iksos daor.
A dragon is not a slave.
She managed to grasp her forebear’s language with some help but she wouldn’t say she mastered the tongue of High Valyrian. Rather, she knew the basics.
It was noon, the sun casting a warm glow over the wooden yard. (Y/n) focused on fastening the leather straps to the saddle, she had a feeling that it was becoming loose.
Aegar laid comfortably on the ground, snoring.
Legolas leaned against a nearby tree, watching her and noticing the furrowed brow that she had for nearly an hour.
“Something is on your mind.” Legolas commented. “Speak, looking bothered does not suit you.”
(Y/n) paused, her fingers picking at the old and peeling leather. “It is nothing.” Offering a smile.
But Legolas saw through her smile, he could see it in her eyes. “You forget I know you, I knew you from the start… You’re worried that once Aegar is old enough, you’ll be forgotten.”
She sighed, tying the leather back into the saddle. “I only worry for Tauriel. The King does not respect her enough.”
“You worry too much, you need to place some of it on yourself and Aegar.” Legolas stepped forward. “You have earned your place here.”
“I have no place here. My home is gone and I’m an outsider, I’m no elf. If I had not appeared with my dragon, Thranduil would’ve sent me away.” She explained, standing to her feet as she observed the saddle.
Legolas was ready to push that idea out of her head. He had no idea she thought of herself so lowly. He grabbed her arm.
Tauriel suddenly appeared. “There’s trouble.” She announced tension in her voice. “The King has ordered another nest to get rid of.”
(Y/n) pulled her arm back. “Aegar!” She shouted, waking him up from his slumber. “Iōrās.”
Aegar stood on his feet, stretching his wings. She grabbed the ropes to mount him.
“(Y/n), wait,” Tauriel grabbed her hand. “The King has requested you stay behind.”
(Y/n) frowned and scoffed. “It would be easier if Aegar-”
But she could see it in Tauriel’s eyes, Thranduil was going to keep her and her dragon here. “A dense forest with a large dragon?” Tauriel laid it out for her. “He fears the damage it could cause. Aegar could not maneuver properly in those woods.”
“Alright.” She muttered, stepping away from Aegar. “Alright.”
“I’m sorry.”
(Y/n) watched them go, annoyed and saddened. She longed to be by their side, joining them in a fight.
Thranduil was going to make her wait and watch. He was going to make her feel like a burden. His way was punishment.
(Y/n) watched from the corner, watching as each dwarf was pushed into a cell. Their complaints were falling on death’s ears.
She stepped out from the shadows and towards Legolas’s direction, wanting to know where the dwarves came from.
“What do you know of dragons, girl?” The dwarf’s voice was gruff, laced with bitterness as he eyed the dragon sigils embroidered into her clothing. “You wear it like a badge of honor.”
(Y/n) eyed him as well, realizing who the dwarf in the cell was. “You’re Thorin Oakenshield? Heir to the throne of Erebor.”
Thorin’s fists clenched around the iron bars. “You have yet to answer my question.”
(Y/n)’s eyes widened in amazement. “I cannot believe it. I’ve-”
“(Y/n)! Dina!” Legolas commanded her to come. “Get away from the dwarf.”
With that, she walked away, leaving no room for Thorin or (Y/n) to say anything.
“Must you speak to them?” Legolas sneered, following you down the steps. “What reason do you have?”
“I’ve always wanted to see the infamous Thorin Oakenshield. It was not disappointing.”
“...Is it?”
(Y/n) nodded, a smile on her lips. “Yes. If what they say is true… If they reclaim the mountain, I would love to see the glory of Erebor.”
Legolas froze in his steps. “I am beginning to wonder where your allegiance lies.”
“What makes you wonder that?”
“...Go, I need to report to the King.”
She rolled her eyes, asking herself if her curiosity made Legolas or anyone else question her loyalty.
Of course, her loyalty lies with Thranduil, he saved her and took a human and a dragon in. A human not from this world.
The sun had begun to set when (Y/n) stood at Thorin’s cell. “Might I ask you something?” She began, breaking the silence.
He looked up at her, eyes wary. “What is it? Dragon rider?”
“If you had no memories of the kingdom or its riches, would you still fight to reclaim it?”
“Yes.” He answered without hesitation. “For it is not the gold or treasures that drive me, but the honor and memory of my kin who were lost. To reclaim Erebor is to honor their memory, to give those who wish for their home.”
He stepped closer to the bars as he spoke his words, loudly enough for the rest of the Company to hear. He spoke with bravery and pride, not a single ounce of shame in them.
(Y/n) listened to his words closely. It made her think of her own home, the writing of the book could not describe the doom correctly.
Only a dream, unsure if it came true…
(Y/n) became lost in her thoughts, she began to speak aloud. “I wonder…” She uttered. “What it would be to see Valyria, to walk the streets, see the dragons fly into the sky with my people on its back. I wonder if any Targaryens remain.”
She sighed, sitting down on the steps. “I wonder if the dream was true and the doom of my home was correct.”
Thorin, still irate from the encounter from earlier but genuinely curious about her side of dragons, sat as well. “Was it taken?”
“It was destroyed. A Targaryen had a dream, D… Daenys had a dream. She had foresaw the destruction. But I have no way to know if it was true, I do not know if Valyria still stands or if any Targaryens remain to rule the skies.”
(Y/n) looked up to the ceiling, closing her eyes to remember how Valyria was described. “To be home. I would give my life just to see it.”
“…May you find your way home, dragon rider… And safely.”
It was a chaotic scene. The dwarves and Bilbo found themselves stuck in wine barrels but their path down the rough rivers were blocked by the portcullis.
Kili’s cry was loudly heard as he fell back, clutching his leg that the Morgul arrow stuck out of.
“Kili.”
Thorin felt his heart sink, hearing his nephew’s cries as he was unable to do anything.
Legolas, Tauriel, and the other Elves fought against Blog and his party.
The Orcs were relentless, fighting to the point until their bodies gave out and welcomed death.
Arrows flew into their bodies, daggers stabbed into their hearts or heads.
Kili’s eyes shut tightly, hissing loudly as he attempted to get back up.
His eyes opened and widened, his eyelids fluttering as the pain was flowing throughout his body… He could see a dragon flying… A dragon?
He could make out the dragon’s silhouette against the sunlight, circling the river before he saw him make a dive. He could hear him roar, loudly.
Tauriel’s eyes immediately shot to the sky, Aegar’s body casting a shadow over the river.
Aegar descended from the sky and landed into the river, his landing sending waves that splashed anyone close.
Thorin couldn’t see Aegar but the sound of his roar was enough to send chills down his back. He looked back and saw the rest of his Company staring up at the dragon.
(Y/n) swiftly unchained herself from the saddle, her feet hitting the ground. She drew her sword, cutting down the Orc coming towards Kili.
She took a quick glance around and estimated the amount of Orcs, she could hear another group coming.
Aegar let out another roar, lunging forward and his massive jaws snapped shut on the nearest orc, easily crushing him into two pieces.
He exhaled a quick stream of flame at the incoming group, the Orcs screaming as they threw themselves into the river.
The Orc swung his ax at her, she ducked and cut his leg, making him kneel with a shriek. She pierced his head with force, making sure he was dead.
She continued to cut through the Orcs with Aegar protecting her, coming down on an Orc that nearly came down on her.
“Tauriel!” She shouted as she tossed one of her daggers past Tauriel’s head.
She grabbed the dagger lodged into the Orc’s chest to stab it once more before using it on another, she tossed it back and (Y/n) caught it.
She heard Kili loudly groan once again, Thorin’s Company were sitting ducks in those barrels and they could only do so much with little to no weapons.
That’s when she noticed why the Company was just floating. The portcullis was shut. It must’ve been why Kili wasn’t in his barrel and why he was on the ground, holding his knee.
(Y/n) dodged another Orc’s attack, managing to move behind him. She grabbed his head and slid her blade across his neck, she then let him fall to the ground.
She came to Kili’s side. “Now’s your chance!” She stated, crossing blades with another. “Go! Before they outnumber us all!”
Kili managed to conjure whatever strength he had left and grabbed the lever, opening the portcullis, and allowing the Company to escape.
“Kili!” His brother cried out, watching Kili slump to the ground once again but push himself into the barrel.
Kili felt and heard the arrow snap, sending another wave of agony throughout his weakening body.
(Y/n) watched as one-by-one, the Company fell into the water and their barrels carried them through the rough stream.
She turned back the Orcs, immediately impaling one Orc coming down on an Elf, and used her dagger to finish the job.
She looked up at Legolas drawing another arrow. “Secure Mirkwood.” He ordered. “Worry about damages later.”
Legolas ran off, following the Orcs that were focused on the Company, Tauriel was behind him.
She rushed to Aegar, she climbed onto Aegar who lowered his neck, allowing her to quickly settle herself.
“Sōvēs!” Aegar began to run, flapping his wings a couple of times before taking off.
(Y/n) directed him towards the gates, wanting to spread the word first. Thorin looks back into the sky, watching Aegar and noticing (Y/n) upon his back.

“Search to the back,” Thorin calls out to Dwalin, “caves in the mountain are seldom unoccupied.” The rest of the company starts to shuffle into the damp cave. “There’s nothin’ here,” Dwalin’s voice calls out and you all start to drop your things down in relief. “Right then,” Gloin rubs his hands together in anticipation, “let’s get a fire started!” “No,” Thorin stops him, “no fires, not in this place.” You shiver and pull your cloak tighter around your shoulders. There is a horrible draft in the cave and you’re already soaked to the bone from the rain storm. “Get some sleep,” he instructs you all, “we start at first light.” You plop your wet things down onto the cavern floor. Everyone’s starting to unpack the necessities for the night, unfolding bedrolls and blankets. Finding free spaces on the cavern floor to claim. You’ve never put much thought into where you slept when setting up camp with the company. If you were in a particularly bad mood, you’d sometimes try and sleep as far away from everyone as safely possible. But now that you stand here, shivering in your rain soaked clothing, there is only one thing you desire: warmth. And if you cannot have a fire, there is one enticing alternative…
Your gaze drifts to the other side of the cave where Thorin speaks with a frustrated looking Balin. The two are huddled closely together. Do you dare sleep next to Thorin tonight? The two of you had certainly crossed quite a few boundaries already, but only ever behind closed doors. Never while the rest of the company was there to witness any form of affection between the two of you. Would Thorin object to allowing them any kind of clue as to what has already transpired between the two of you? Do you even want them to know? It almost feels like admitting some sort of defeat. Thorin finally wore you down after all your claims of not being able to stand him. Fili and Kili would never let you hear the end of it. “Bofur,” Thorin calls out, “take the first watch.” He turns away from Balin, briefly catching your eyes as you stand there watching him, still frozen in indecision. You can tell he’s having the same internal debate over your sleeping arrangements. He averts his gaze from yours and instead turns his back to you, heading towards the furthest corner of the cave. Ouch That decision has been made for you then. It should bring you some relief but instead all you can feel is…hurt. But there’s really no reason to. Just because the two of you had been semi-intimate a couple of times doesn’t meant that you’re now…together. You aren’t even sure if you want to be with Thorin that way. Publicly, romantically, or however it was you used to imagine the two of you growing up. Back when you were just a young, foolish girl. So certain that the dashing dwarven prince you’d grown up with would be by your side forever. One way or another. Marriage and courtship were never anything the two of you discussed but Dwarven society demanded that you would both marry someday. Not long before Smaug arrived, your parents were already bringing by the occasional suitor. Desperate to try and marry you off, as if that would ever tame your wild nature the way they hoped it would. And of course Thorin would need a queen. A fully dwarven queen. Someone of status, not the half dwarf girl he spent all his time with. But even though you both knew you’d be married off eventually, it was always implied that you’d still be in each other’s lives. You’d been best friends since childhood, why would that ever have to change? You couldn’t imagine ever having to live without him. That is, until you did. Until he left you no choice.
You pick your things back up with a huff. Fine then. If we wants to give you an orgasm then immediately go back to being a grumpy asshole, that’s on him. You toss your pack against the cave wall. Angrily unpacking your things next to a very quiet Bilbo. Thorin has always been very hard on the hobbit, tonight especially. After nearly plummeting to his death over the slippery cliffside, the last thing he needs is Thorin’s aggressively cold shoulder. You feel bad for the poor thing, but you’re too busy festering in your own frustrations to say so. After piling on every single blanket you own, you angrily lay down to sleep. Glaring up at the cavern and pulling the blankets all the way up to your chin. Everyone else is already asleep. Snoring away in a deep slumber, clearly exhausted from the day’s journey. Your eyelids are starting to droop as well. But just before you can drift off, a soft voice whispers your name from beside you. Your eyes snap back open and you turn to look at a sheepish Bilbo. “Can I ask you something?” he whispers. You yawn and rub your eyes, turning onto your side to see him better. “I don’t mean to pry, but I heard some of the other’s mention you’re only half dwarf. Is that true?” “Yes,” you nod, “on my father’s side. My mother is-was a human.” “Is that common in Erebor?” he asks curiously. “Not at all,” you laugh quietly, “My father was a very well respected lord in Erebor. My mother was the daughter of a merchant from Dale. He would take any excuse he could to go into town and visit her stall. When they eventually decided to get married there was quite a fuss. My mother’s family wanted nothing to do with her- or me for that matter. But luckily my Father was very good friends with Thorin’s father, Thrain. They’d grown up together, they were as close as brothers. He blessed the union and when I was born he helped ensure that I was treated as a full Dwarven citizen, just like everyone else.” “It must have been hard growing up though, I can’t imagine everyone was as accepting as Thorin’s family.” “At times,” you admit, “but I had friends in high places. And people would rather hold their tongues around me than risk the wrath of those friends.” “You mean Thorin?” Bilbo asks bluntly, and you peek over your shoulder at your king, making sure he is still asleep. “Everyone says you two used to be thick as thieves, practically inseparable.” You can see the steady rise and fall of Thorin’s chest even from here. “He was my best friend,” you confess in a soft whisper, not tearing your gaze from him. Even in his sleep Thorin looks cross. That ever present frown still on his face as he holds his sword close to his chest, as if someone will attack him in his dreams.
“What happened?” Bilbo asks, and you squeeze your eyes shut at the memories of dragon fire and the anguished screams of your kin. “Smaug didn’t just take our home and our loved ones,” you can still feel Thorin’s strong arms wrapped around you as he drags you away from the flames, kicking and screaming in protest. “Every dwarf that walked out of those halls that day, did so with a piece of themselves missing. Joy, innocence; it all had to be left behind in the flames. Thorin had to step up and become a king, everyone was looking to him now. And I finally had the freedom I’d always longed for, but at a price I wasn’t willing to pay. We both had to leave behind our childhoods in Erebor, we had to grow up quickly to survive this new reality. We started to show our true colors, and neither of us liked what we saw.” “You were angry,” Bilbo translates, “both of you.” “There are many different kinds of anger, Master Baggins. His made him stubborn and afraid, mine made me reckless and bitter. Those don’t mix well together.” “I don’t see why you two can’t get that back now,” he insists, “you were both young and grieving, surely enough time has passed since then?” “Time has nothing to do with it,” you hiss, a sharper edge coming into your tone, “He’s done things I can’t forgive, and he’d never forgive me if he knew half the things I’ve done since we last parted ways.” “What have you done?” “You wouldn’t understand!” you snap, your voice slightly louder than you had intended. “Go to sleep, hobbit,” you insist, rolling onto your other side to turn your back to him. After a moment or so, you hear him settle back into his bedroll. Your gaze falls back to Thorin’s spot across the cave. You could have sworn you saw his eyes close as soon as you look back in his direction, but you’re too tired to care. Your eyelids droop as you fall into a deep sleep, dreaming about that view from the doorway of the inn, tears running down your face, curses and insults screamed at his back as Thorin walks away.

Does it make you nervous when I stare?
Tumblr media
Each time you took your sights from the townsfolk, you would find bright blue eyes on you and it was nerve-wracking to say the least. They were the eyes of the Elvenking who had emerged from his woodland realm with his army to reclaim some jewels, so Bard had told you. You thought of his cause as ridiculous but he would also aid Lake Town in claiming their rightful share of the mountain’s wealth that Smaug had stolen from Bard’s ancestor - such wealth would be essential for the town’s people to rebuild their lives after the terror of dragonfire and the losses that it ensued.
You found yourself unable to hold his gaze for even a second, face flushing at being stared at by someone as powerful as he was beautiful. You would trip over your words in a flustered state for a few moments before regaining your composure and telling yourself that you would not look upon the Elvenking again. You were wrong each time, of course, and continued to find his eyes on you as you instructed the townsfolk in simple defences from each of four diagonals.
Bard had requested that you teach some of the people how to fight in order to try and better prepare them for the war that could not be avoided. Your late father had been a mercenary, teaching you how to use a longsword and a bow – you made your money off selling the pelts of animals that you hunted. Hunts, as of late, had rarely been without the occasional orc scout and so your swordsmanship skills had become more refined in recent months.
When you were permitted a break, you spent it in the armoury, looking for some decent armour. You refused to stay in Dale and hide with the elderly, children and other women. You knew that, in your place, some young boy who was yet to be considered a man would have to fight and the fishermen of Lake Town lacked in number when it came to people with your fighting skills. You were far from being like the warriors of old legends but you could defend yourself and you would not see a defenceless boy be made to take your place.
You browsed around what remained in the armoury, all of the protective gear old, most in poor condition, and all of it designed for men which would do very poorly to fit you. You had to settle for some chainmail, good against sword-slashes but not heavy weapons and a helmet that must have been made for a young man for it to fit you as it did.
You set the helmet down on a dusty table as you pulled out a chair, not bothered by the cobwebs after all you had been through in the last few days. You rested your head in your hands and let out a long sigh, thinking about what lay ahead. You ran a hand through your hair, pushing back the strands that had escaped your braid and now fell about your face, looking up to where one of the two armoury doors stood open, finding a tall silhouette blocking a lot of the light.
You froze at seeing those strikingly blue eyes again. He stepped inside and shut the door behind him and you rose to your feet, back straightened and head lowered in respect of his status.
“King Thranduil,” You began, “is there anything I can assist you with?”
“Only in satisfying me.” Your eyes widened and a blush flooded to your cheeks as your head snapped up to meet his eyes. You most certainly wouldn’t be opposed but this was very sudden and you were sure there were elven women who were far more beautiful than you within his realm. Was he merely so impatient in his lust that he had decided to take his pick from the mortal women while camping in the ruins of Dale? The corner of his mouth pulled up in a smirk at your reaction, “My curiosity, that is.” Your body seemed to relax.
“What is it that you wish to know?” You willed the blush to drain from your cheeks but his look of amusement at seeing so clearly where your mind had gone assured that the blush remained in place.
“I would like to know where a young mortal woman learned how to fight. I understand that women, children and the elderly are not expected to fight in war so why is it that you wield a sword better than most of the men around you?” So that is why he had been staring: he considered you an outlier to his understanding of how the mortal world worked in war.
“My father was a mercenary. I suppose having only one daughter made him protective of me and so he taught me the basics of swordsmanship, knowing he would not always be around to defend me. I make my living off selling pelts and meat from bigger game but orcs have increased in number in these lands as of late so I suppose it’s given me the opportunity to refine my fighting skills.” You explained simply his eyes raked over your body, making you pull at your fingers nervously, some of the joints cracking. Was he so set on casting such subtle innuendos?
“And I would be right to assume that you intend to fight too?” Oh, He had been taking in the chainmail that you wore. Of course. His eyes flickered between your eyes and hands as you fumbled for an answer at realising your thinking had been wrong.
“I do. In my place, they would select a boy who has seen far too few winters. I won’t see a child take my place merely because I am a woman.” He took a step forwards and you took a step back unconsciously, eyes darting to meet his and finding yourself unable to hold his intense gaze.
“Does it make you nervous when I stare?” His voice seemed to come out even richer with the question, like a purr and you swallowed hard, pulling at your fingers even harder.
“I…” Well, lying would be fruitless, you reasoned, “You have a certain… superiority about you. It’s quite intimidating, in all honesty.” You stole a quick glance to his face, finding him looking very smug.
“Is that the only reason?” You let the silence hang in the air for a moment.
“And, frankly, because you are very beautiful.” You regretted the words the moment they left your mouth.
“‘Beautiful’?” He highlighted and you couldn’t stop yourself from fumbling over your next words.
“Beautiful. Yes. I think that ‘beautiful’ has a… delicate elegance that I think ‘handsome’ does not quite possess. That’s not to say that I see you as delicate, far from it. It’s much more swan-like in appearance and mannerism, I suppose and… I’m going to stop talking now. I should stop.” Your cheeks were alight with a blush and you turned around to distract yourself by tucking the dusty chair back under the table. There was a low laugh from Thranduil behind you and you scrunched your eyes shut, scolding yourself for being so flustered by him.
“Then perhaps I should confide that I find you beautiful also.” Your eyes instantly snapped open and you looked over your shoulder to try and decipher whether or not he was teasing you. “Though, not like a swan, I must admit. You are much more… serpentine in your movements.” He was making similar comparisons to try and make you feel better, how sweet. Your breath caught in your throat when, as you slowly turned back to face him, his fingers came beneath your chin, tilting your head up and assuring that it was very difficult for you to escape his intense stare, “Are you certain that there are no elves in your ancestry?” A part of you was both stung and flattered by the question: he was no doubt complimenting your beauty in asking such a thing, though it was also rather reflective of the arrogance of elves that you had heard rumours of.
“As far as I am aware, no, though I cannot trace it back very far.” Too many words, too many details. Again. You could have kicked yourself for your awkwardness. However, it only seemed to amuse him, seeing how you couldn’t quite stand still, the blush stamped upon your face.
“It’s quite endearing.” You hummed in confusion, a request for him to elaborate, “How easily flustered you are.” Your lips parted a little in shock at his bluntness and you tried to look away, only to have his fingers grip your chin more firmly, a silent order to meet those sparkling eyes of his. His head turned back to the doors for a moment. “Are they expecting you back shortly?”
“N-not for a little while yet.” You stammered, wondering where he was going with this line of questioning.
“Perhaps we could pass the time together?” His voice quietened, leaning in to whisper in your ear: “I did not miss how you reacted to the thought of satisfying me.” His nose brushed against your hair, inhaling the scent of you, “We could satisfy each other.” You swallowed hard, almost finding it hard to believe that the Elvenking of all people wanted to sleep with you. You nodded your head minutely before you remembered how to use your voice.
“Yes…” Your voice was barely a whisper. He tilted his head to the side, drawing back a little to give you a look that told you to speak up. “Yes, please.” Your words were louder this time. His hand came up to cup your face and his lips pressed to yours. You almost felt embarrassed for the hummed moan that you let out at the first contact – it had been a while since you had been touched at all and it made your legs feel weak.
Your hands came up to cup either side of his jaw, fingers just slightly dipping into his hair and wishing that you had the courage to tug on it but it seemed so important to his appearance and you worried that he would take offence if you tried. His other hand curled around your hip, pushing you backwards until your lower back hit the table.
Your breathing had grown much quicker by the time he was reaching under your thighs to hoist you onto the table, pulling you to the edge and pushing your legs apart to stand between them. His tongue licked into your mouth and your hands fell from his face to his chest, fingertips curling around the neckline of his armour, needing something to ground yourself with amongst his dizzying kisses. When his lips landed on your jaw, you let your head fall back, biting your kiss-swollen lips to stifle moans when his lips found a particularly soft spot on your neck and sucked down on the supple skin. His hands landed on your waist, a series of clinking sounds filling the air as they ran across the curves of your body under the chainmail.
“Get this off.” His voice was quiet and yet no less commanding and you reached down to pull it over your head while he unstrapped the weapons at his waist, setting them down in a pile on the table alongside your borrowed armour. His eyes roved over the rest of the room for a moment before landing on a more secluded corner behind a rack that had once been full of spears and you gasped when you were suddenly in his arms again, the sound being swallowed up by yet another kiss while you wrapped your legs around his waist. Your back met the wall and he carefully set you on your feet, feeling his hands tugging at the ties of your trousers. You reached into the fabric of his robes to do the same, dipping your hand into the strained clothing to stroke his hardened cock and he let out a low groan against your ear as his hands pushed your trousers down your thighs.
You almost lost your balance in your hurry to toe off your boots, Thranduil steadying you with his arms on either side of your body and an amused smile upon his lips. You were more careful with stepping out of the lower half of your clothing and you gasped when his fingers dipped into your wet slit.
“So wet already?” He hummed, lips against your neck.
“I’m certain that with a lifespan like yours, I wouldn’t be the first to tell you how much of a brilliant kisser you are.” There was a low laugh against the skin of your neck, the vibrations almost tickling you and all the air rushed from your lungs when he slowly dipped two fingers into your cunt.
“Perhaps you also would not be the first to compliment my other skills.” You could only whimper in reply as his fingers curled up to stroke against your more sensitive spot, dragging against it each time he withdrew his fingers and pushed them back into your waiting heat. Deeming you wet enough to take him, he wiped his fingers clean of your wetness on your inner thigh and picked you up once more, trapping you between the wall and his body. You longed to see what he looked like beneath the clothes and armour and could only hope that you would one day have another opportunity to do so.
His cock pressed against your entrance as he slowly breached your walls, making you stretch to accommodate him. You buried your face in his neck to muffle a whine, beginning to feel just how long it had been for you since your series of flings with the blacksmith’s second son.
“Am I hurting you?” His voice was tender against your ear and you shook your head.
“It’s just been a while, please don’t stop. Please.” The light begging seemed to have a strong effect on him as he was quickly giving you shallow thrusts, allowing you time to adjust before fully sheathing himself in you. The size of him made you feel utterly full and your arms wrapped around his neck as he bounced you up and down on his cock. His lips crashed onto yours when the volume of your moans began to slip out of your control, swallowing your sounds of pleasure. By the time he broke the kiss, you were panting for breath.
“Touch yourself.” His words came out rushed and you unclasped your fingers from the robes at the back of his neck to reach down with one hand and rub against your clit, spreading your fingers apart and then dipping down further to feel either side of his cock as it entered and left you. He groaned at the light feel of your fingers which then retreated to do as he had asked of you. The added pleasure only pushed you to the verge of orgasm even faster, wet walls tightening around him and feeling your legs tremble, held up by his strong hands.
You did not realise that you had tangled your fingers tightly into his hair until he let out a moan and his hips faltered against your before he upped his ante. You crashed your lips against his in a messy kiss in an attempt to muffle your moans as you could only pray that no one would hear the obscene noises of your slick cunt taking him in so greedily, nor the sounds of your skin meeting with the way your clothes had been half-discarded.
He caged you against the wall even firmer and feeling his body pressed so tightly to yours, paired with how his lips met your neck once more, sent you tumbling over the edge into your orgasm. Your hand tugged on his hair and you buried your face in his shoulder as your body convulsed, feeling him continue to fuck you through your orgasm until it grew uncomfortably intense.
“Down… put me… down…” You managed to gasp out and he let out a long groan that almost ended in a whine. He did not disobey your wishes, however, and slipped out from you, settling you to your feet and you did not hesitate to fall to your knees. Your hand reached up to stroke his cock, slick with your wetness, before taking him in your mouth as far as you could manage, swallowing around him and pressing against the underside of his cock with your tongue, hollowing your cheeks once you began bobbing your head.
His breath came out in a shuddered sigh as he wrapped your braid around his hand, tugging on it and lightly thrusting his hips against your face. You could feel him throb in your mouth and at the first taste of his seed, you took all of him down your throat as he finished, revelling in the quiet noises that he made as he did. His forearm rested against the wall above your head, towering over you as he panted for breath while you swallowed all that he had to give. You removed him from your mouth, giving one last teasing lick to the tip of his cock before falling to the side a little, your legs beside you instead of under you.
You closed your eyes contently as he pushed some hair back from your face and then stood upright to fix up his clothes.
“They will be expecting you back soon.” He spoke and you hummed, nodding your head before leaning it back against the wall.
“I just need a moment to catch my breath.” You mumbled, cracking an eyes open to see Thranduil bending down to turn your trousers the right way for you and set your boots neatly beside one another. He dipped down even lower to bring his fingers under your chin, pressing one last, lingering kiss to your lips.
“I hope this will not be the last time we cross paths, fair little mortal.” With that said, he went over to collect his weapons, reattaching the belts and he left the armoury as he had entered: a perfectly put-together epitome of elegance. Your eyes widened for a moment as it dawned on you that you had just fucked a King and would need to recover quickly to avoid suspicion when you returned to your task.

so, i am one film in of my the hobbit re-watch and it's interesting how they portrayed each dwarf visually. there's quite an amount of fighting which showcases us the way they act: who's the fighter and who's the carer, who's the leader and who's the follower, who's the mind and who's the brutal force. but — their appearance does tell a huge part of the untold story about who they are and what are their roles in the company.
while re-watching 'an unexpected journey' i had an opportunity to pay closer attention to fili and kili:
Tumblr media
and if i still didn't know a single thing about them aside basics and was asked «who's going to be the next king?», i'd say fili without hesitation, based only on the visual.
Tumblr media
fili is put together. he might even seem to be somewhat arrogant with his facial expressions. and visual implications of him being the mature one are in his braids, his still growing beard but already braided mustache.
in comparison to kili — fili has a little bit of the weight that the age brings on him.
Tumblr media
one of the reasons why we might sympathise alot with kili is because kili feels young. his appearance screams that he is the youngest: long unbraided/barely braided hair and those bangs, strands of hair over his face in a way to make it look rounder and cuter. we see kili act impulsively, him being all over the place with attachement and trust, him being childishly loud and stupidly brave. and his appearance really makes sense of that.
the relationships between durin's are also quite interesting to look at:
the thing with fili is not just him being the oldest of the brothers, for also because he is prepared/taught to be mature one. we hear it quickly in action during the departure from laketown but richard also said in the appendices that thorin prepares fili to be the next to the throne. and i think, he used the word «groomed» which might mean that they're at the beginning of the process that is not exactly wanted by one of the sides. hence, why i am using «prepared/taught to» — fili is still young and dumb at times but he is ahead of kili on the ride of growing up. because he has to. he is, again, more put together but he has alot of weaponry that he carries on him in order to be prepared for any sort of fight. he learns skills and hence the reason he still has huge assignment of blades to chose from.
fili is also less confrontational with thorin. kill is really open and honest about his feelings towards thorin's actions, for example in the scenes where thorin is unfair to bilbo. seems like kili really did get attached to the hobbit and was not shy to be judgemental.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
also desperate for he is still young and doesn't really understand the meaning of calculated decisions and compromises.
Tumblr media
fili usually keeps to the side, be it because he observes, has less confrontational character or just knows not to interfere when thorin gets moody. when kili jokes on bilbo — fili just plays along. when thorin starts to berate them it's kili who's ashamed but fili is just there. he is so done with thorin, it seems, he doesn't have it in him to react.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
observing kili's behavior we can say that kili looks up to thorin in a more sincere, childish way. thorin is the hero of his childhood dreams, for he is the dwarf who took up on the role of his father while juggling all of his other duties. kili wants to impress thorin, wants to be good for him too, it shows in a way he jumps into fights hot-headed. and he is often ashamed when he disappoints him.
fili, on the other hand, just does what thorin says because he knows thorin will want of him exactly that. he learned a lot from and of thorin, he knows how to operate under his command. in a way, he might start to see thorin more as a leader rather than a father figure.
and it might be for another post but we see fili get openly confrontational only in 'the desolation of smaug' and only because kili is in danger. no matter how important it is for thorin to raise a king out of him, fili is still going to put his brother first.
he protests:
first time is when thorin rushes everyone on the river bank while kili needs healer's attention because of his leg.
second time — when thorin wants fili to go with them to erebor and fili choses to stay in laketown with kili who's gotten worse. thorin needs fili there with them because he is the next in line. fili's priorities lie with his brother. and that's probably the most loud conflict fili had with thorin in the whole trilogy. that was the conflict of interests.
the most loud conflict kili had with thorin, though, is in 'the battle of the five armies' when he finally had enough of thorin hiding behind a wall while the rest are dying for them. he almost lost respect for thorin and that was his last attempt to bring him to his senses because this thorin was not his childhood hero, was not the person he looks up to and the matter at hand wasn't just his foul character. it was the conflict of morals.
and i find that beautiful.

Concerning Hobbits
Pairing: Fili x hobbit f!reader
Request: Anonymous asked: Hello! I absolutely ADORE your writing! Could I request a Fili fic where the reader is a hobbit and really close friends with Bilbo so he has brought them with him to Erebor several times and between their last visit and their current visit Fili has been exchanging letters with Bilbo to learn about Hobbit courting etiquette so he can ask the reader out?
A/N:I hope you enjoy it! I'm honoured you trusted me with this request, especially since I haven't written for Fili before.
Genre: Fluff/romance
Description: Fili enlists the help of Bilbo to learn about hobbit courting customs in order to ask you out in the best way possible.
Warnings: None
Word count: 1471
You’d always been close to Bilbo, he was like a brother to you, so it was only natural that you thoroughly questioned him when he came back months after disappearing so suddenly.
His tale fascinated you, more than it should fascinate a respectable hobbit. You asked questions, about the elves, about the mountain, about Smaug, but most of all, about his 13 companions, the dwarves.
You’d never met anyone who wasn’t a hobbit, but ever since you were young you’d had a fascination with the race of dwarves, reading books about them, begging your parents to bring you back hand-crafted items the dwarves in Bree were selling.
So yes, it was only expected that you would be most interested in Bilbo’s companions - how you wished you’d been able to meet them. But most particularly, you were fascinated by the Durin’s, especially the golden-haired prince who’s good nature and humour Bilbo would fondly talk about.
Therefore, when Bilbo casually mentioned returning to Erebor to visit his friends you immediately begged to go with him. Knowing how much it would mean to you, particularly with your birthday coming up as you so kindly reminded him, he agreed, and one letter to the dwarf king later the two of you were on the road.
To everyone’s (or no-one’s) surprise, you and Fili hit it off immediately. The golden-haired prince had taken an instant liking to you and you to him.
The second visit was much the same, except the relationship between the two of you only grew stronger as you grew closer and closer to the line between friends and something more.
Both of you were beginning to feel things for each other that went beyond friendship, but neither of you said anything as you left with Bilbo once more, this time with a promise to write.
Neither of you noticed the knowing glance Thorin and Bilbo had shared, and after you left, Fili had been subjected to endless teasing from his brother until Tauriel of all people had taken pity on the heir and reminded Kili that he was just as smitten, if not more.
In the weeks after the trip, you and Fili had sent letter after letter to each other, and when Bilbo mentioned taking you on another visit you’d instantly agreed, the blond still vivid in your mind.
What Bilbo didn’t tell you, was that you weren’t the only one who had been in regular contact with Fili. Ever since he had returned to Bag End his mailbox had been full of letters from Fili asking all kinds of questions about hobbits and their courting customs.
It was bad enough reading and answering the incredibly long letters that seemed to revolve around you, but he also had to hide them from you - something that was quite difficult since you’d often bring in his mail for him when you came over for breakfast, forcing him to wake up even earlier to snatch any letters Fili should send before you came over.
In the end, he had sent a thick book regarding hobbits and their customs which had seemed to satisfy the dwarf for the foreseeable future.
Now, he was finally taking you to Erebor again, and you were beyond excited. Little did you know, but Fili, upon hearing of your visit, had been a flustered mess, his usually calm demeanour seemingly gone as he scoured the text in the book over and over as he scurried to make sure that everything was perfect as he anticipated your arrival.
No one commented when your greeting with Fili was far from ‘formal’, his arms winding around your waist as he lifted you from the ground and spun you around, your laugh ringing through the air, your curls bouncing when he set you down.
It wasn’t until later that Fili asked you if he could show you something and the two of you excused yourselves from the company.
You completely missed Kili’s encouraging wink and thumbs up to his brother from behind your back.
Fili didn’t tell you where he was leading you as he led you through halls you’d never seen before. You were about to ask when he pulled open a door, gesturing for you to step through and you stepped into perhaps the most beautiful part of Erebor you’d seen.
It was a terrace, or courtyard of sorts, jutting out from the mountain and looking over Dale, but it wasn’t the view that amazed you most.
The terrace was more like a garden, with grass instead of stone and all sorts of brightly coloured flowers blooming in various places - some you recognised, some you didn’t.
You turned to Fili, a bright smile adorning your face. “This is amazing. Has this always been here?”
He shifted, looking slightly embarrassed. “Sort of. It was awful when I first found it. I’ve been fixing it up since your last visit. I thought you’d like it.”
“I love it!” You assured him, walking further out, relishing the feeling of glass tickling your feet again as you headed towards the only non-plant in the place; a yellow picnic rug set out with your favourite foods.
Fili followed you to the rug, watching you sit down and look admiringly at the food.
“Did you make this too?” You asked, half joking.
To your surprise he didn’t object. “Bombour helped. I hope it’s alright.”
You stared at him for a moment. Did he realise that in The Shire something like this would be seen as an intention to court? Or was he just being friendly? You smiled. “I’m sure it will be.”
As you ate, you couldn’t help but notice that Fili was acting a bit strangely. Yes, he would laugh and smile, but he fidgeted when he thought you weren’t looking and only picked at the food.
You set your plate aside. “Is there a reason for all this? Or am I just that good a friend?”
“No. I mean yes. I mean…” He sighed, seemingly building up his courage before he faced you. “Maybe this will tell you what I mean.
He reached behind him to pick up a bouquet which he then held out to you.
You accepted the bundle of carefully picked flowers, a few immediately sticking out to you. Red roses, both white and pink camellias, red carnations, orchids and tulips.
Clearly, in the eyes of a hobbit, a declaration of love and adoration.
You glanced up at the blond, who was watching you with a hopeful expression. “You know, in The Shire, this sort of thing would be considered a clear intention to court. A declaration of love, even.”
“And what would you say if that’s exactly what it is?”
You smiled, leaning across to place a quick kiss to his lips before leaning back, watching the expression of surprise and happiness cross Fili’s face. “I’d say I accept and the feelings are returned.”
He smiled, leaning closer to brush a stay piece of hair behind your slightly pointed ear, letting his fingers linger. “That’s good, because otherwise I wouldn’t be able to do this.”
He kissed you again, this time lingering longer, the remaining food all but forgotten as your grip on the bouquet loosened and you leaned into the kiss.
You’d be lying to say that you’d never thought about what the Prince’s lips would feel like against yours, how his beard would brush against your skin, and it was safe to say that this surpassed even your wildest dreams.
Fili pulled away, blue eyes shining. “Maybe later I can show you our courting customs.”
“I’d like that.” You murmured. “How did you know all this stuff?” You asked, glancing down to admire the bundle of flowers in your hands again.
“I asked Bilbo.” Fili admitted. “And he sent me a book.”
“What book?” You questioned with a smile. You found it adorable that he’d put in so much effort for you.
He grinned back. “Concerning Hobbits.”
~
Bilbo wasn’t surprised when you nervously pulled him aside the day before you were to leave, glancing anxiously at Fili over the other hobbit’s shoulder, who nodded encouragingly. He’d already talked to his uncle, who had agreed that you should be the one to talk to Bilbo.
“Bilbo?” You began, “Bilbo, I’m not ready to go home. I want to stay here…with Fili…” At his silence you rushed on. “I don’t want to upset you, and I’ll miss you but-”
Your long time friend wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into a tight hug. “I understand. You don’t need to explain yourself.” He pulled back, smiling at you. “I’m happy for you.”
So with a promise to visit again soon and one last hug, Bilbo left Erebor, and you remained behind, Fili’s warm hand around yours as you returned his radiant smile.

According to the lay known as “The Fall of Gil-Galad”, upon this elven-king’s death, he was “the last whose realm was fair and free, between the Mountains and the Sea”.
…say what now? Excuse me, dear Middle-earth minstrels, but you seem to have forgotten about THIS GUY:
Tumblr media
King Thranduil Oropherion is the Sindarin counterpart of the “High King of the Noldor”, and therefore comparable to the renowned High King Gil-Galad, but is sadly not given the same amount of recognition in stories and songs.
Allow me the honor of “singing” the ways Thranduil is very similar to Gil-Galad:
(1) Both were born in the First Age, and as young elves witnessed the destruction of the cities they lived in: Thranduil in Doriath and Gil-Galad in the Havens of the Falas. They were exposed to war and bloodshed at an early age and experienced living as refugees.
(2) Both survived and possibly participated in the War of Wrath. (You know, that really terrible, bloody, decades-long war that literally broke the world--that war.) According to certain interpretations of the film “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug”, Thranduil likely did fight in the War of Wrath, where he “faced the great serpents of the north”. Elven warriors of the First Age were incredibly fierce warriors out of necessity, and if Thranduil survived those great battles when he was about 150 years old, that makes him extra badass.
(3) Both inherited their kingships from their forefathers. Gil-Galad’s claim to the Noldor throne (like his canon parentage) is a little murky, but he is related to Fingolfin whose line was pretty much wiped out, so only Elrond or Galadriel could have challenged his claim (which they didn’t). Thranduil’s claim is far more direct as the son of the first King of the Woodland Realm and ruler of the Silvan people.
(4) Both were warrior kings. Because canon stories of Thranduil are very sparse, we don’t know for sure which wars he did or didn’t participate in during the Second Age. What DID he do those 2,000+ years while his father was establishing and ruling the realm? Honing his warrior skills seems to be a fair hypothesis. How else would he have developed the deadly skills he exhibited at the Battle of Five Armies? How else would he have kept the foul creatures of Dol Goldur at bay without a magic ring? It’s very possible he’s seen more time on the battlefield than official historical accounts say.

(5) Both fought at the Battle of Dagorlad, during the War of the Last Alliance. Gil-Galad fought hard and valiantly to the end at Mordor, slaying Sauron by his own spear. Because Oropher died at the first onslaught, it was likely that Thranduil had to exit the war early, either to bury his father and their slain soldiers, or because he himself was injured. There may have been enough time for him to rejoin the Alliance at the Siege of Barad-dûr, to avenge his father and salvage his family’s honor and pride. But Thranduil, whom people mistakenly dismiss as arrogant or proud, was a king who valued his people and the soldiers under his command. It would have been easy glory to join the Siege since by then the war had been all but won (and won by the blood of his people, might I add). Thranduil chose to stay with his kin and help them through the loss of their king and many loved ones, and to reassure them that they were in good hands with him as their new ruler.
It’s a big, sad shame that Tolkien was not able to write more stories about Thranduil, his family, and the Mirkwood elves. Based on the theories we, his fans, are able to formulate about him, it seems he may have been the most successful, even most benevolent, Elven ruler of them all. He will just have to get his glory and renown in the “songs” and “lays” of our headcanons and fanfics.
