I've seen a couple takes on 'Sokka teaches Zuko to dance' which is very sweet, but also
Zuko is a musical prodigy and practices a bending form that's based on a dance, so I like to think that he spends some time after the war on helping the Fire Nation people dance again and unearthing their traditions connecting to it
And then, the next time they all meet up, he shows everyone this beautiful, revived part of his culture

rate the dancing abilities of the Last Airbender cast. be as thorough as you want.
aang: canonically excellent at dancing
katara: canonically good as long as she is following aang
sokka: like with everything else he does, sokka would be bad at first because he's never actually danced before (canonically the type of guy to stand in the corner of the room during parties and make bitchy comments about everyone else), but i do think that if he actually had any sort of meaningful motivation to learn how to dance he'd get good at it fast
toph: whenever i picture toph dancing it's like a peanuts character. or like how louise belcher dances where she just waves her arms up and down but looks really happy doing it. she's just doing her own thing, having a good time, being adorable and free
zuko: i mean he's very graceful when he's doing his firebending moves so i think he has the potential to be a good dancer, but his psychology would get in the way and he'd stiffen up if actually expected to dance. unless he's drunk. then he's a beast
suki: if suki and aang had a dance-off and aang used airbending to cheat, suki would still win.
mai: she has talent, but none of the motivation. sometimes ty lee lifts her up and twirls her around and that's as much as she willing to participate in any sort of dancing activity.
ty lee: best dancer hands down. in an AU where she and azula are both ballerinas, ty lee's star talent is the single greatest cause of stress in azula's whole life, and that's saying something.
azula: she was always taught that dancing was stupid and gay, so she has no idea how to actually dance. cue ty lee trying to show azula how to dance, only for azula to realize that dancing does, indeed, make people stupid and gay.
jet: one time the freedom fighters had a party and jet was a little tipsy so he danced his heart out, thinking he was killing it, like even showing off a little, but it was actually so cringe. smellerbee couldn't look him in the eye for a week.
iroh: fuck fire nation propaganda, that is a man who knows how to dance. zuko could tell you this firsthand, but he wishes he could wipe it from his memory.

I love and hate my mind doing this to me...
So, I was thinking about another post and wanted to explain why Zutara was not my first couple that did not get together in cannon but I still love them. And my brain keeps going to places and making these story ideas that are just... oof. Like so much potential! Might not work all the way, but sometimes better to let ideas out than in.
But here we go: ATLA characters in a Princess Tutu alternative universe.
If you know the show Princess Tutu, some of you all might know where I am going with this. If not, I might need to explain, but Princess Tutu is more of show you need to experience at least once to understand. So highly recommend watching it first. Or at the very least read the synopsis
For everyone else that has seen the show, here is what I just came up with:
Katara - heroic, a bit head strong girl, kind if not stubborn (Not sure if I would which animal she would be - again if you know the show); but becomes the graceful dancer that is the definition of beauty Princess Tutu/ Painted Lady? ( Ahiru role)
Zuko: Head strong, scary around all that get close to the prince, knight like character and harsh at first but shows to have a heart of gold (Fakir role)
Aang - Role of the prince that sacrificed his heart to protect the world from the villain but looses emotions and asks to have it slowly regained, only ever seeing the heroine Princess Tutu/ Painted Lady (Mytho Role)
And that is all I got. Curious if people would like this or might want to collaborate.

So I had a dream about my ballet years tonight that made me think: zukka dance AU!
Azula would be an AMAZING prima ballerina. She'd be a natural, having perfect control over her body and making the most insane moves look effortless and graceful however the pressure for perfection would be immense (black swan anyone?)
Ty Lee is also a ballerina of great talent but she does not compete with Azula for the prima ballerina position out of a mix of love and self preservation, goofing off when higher ups seem too interested in her talent. She's one of the first to see when Azula start to crack under the pressure and the one who will end up her greatest support
Mai does not dance but she plays the piano during practice because that's the only acceptable outlet for her emotions her parents allow her. She's really good at it too, pouring her inner thoughts and feelings in incredibly complicated compositions befitting Azula's ambitious routines
Zuko would start off also doing ballet, maybe as the only one of acceptable talent to partner with Azula and because she doesn't trust any other boy to catch her but the rigidness and strictness doesn't suit him, this boy is made to dance like flames themselves, out of any perceivable order and full of passion
Inevitably Zuko ducks up (did he flunk a competition? Was he spotted dancing freely and the internet loved it? Maybe both? Maybe something else?) resulting in him getting burned somehow and disowned
Iroh takes in his traumatised nephew and tries to help him heal and learn to love dancing again like he used to as a child
Zuko just wants to regain his father's love honor so he agress ro continue dancing but now he needs a place to train... cue the lovely tiny private owned dance studio around the block!
The dance studio is co-owned by the water sibs. Sokka does the numbers and tech, Katara and Aang are both professional freestyle dancers, training between giving dance classes to local kids
Katara and Sokka's mom used to love dancing and the studio is named after her in her memory (Maybe her own studio was her dream and she build it up but never got to see it being in use?)
Aang has the biggest crush on Katara but she hasn't noticed yet because she is very focussed on her dancing
Toph is part of an underground breakdance group and Suki does one of those more martial arts inspired dance styles at a different studio but they both hang out at the studio sometimes
Maybe Sokka used to be a great dancer too but had an accident that forced him to give it up?
Zuko ends up getting some late night/very early morning slots where he is allowed to use the studio (his uncle pulled some strings, Iroh has probably helped the studio before or something)
But that's coincidently also the time all the tech needs to be checked over... and whoops that hot and funny tech guy is doing things to Zuko's concentration
Of course checking on the tech very day is completely unnecessary, but they ad a minor problem with a faulty speaker the first night Zuko showed up. After seeing this passionate and graceful boy dancing his little heart out Sokka kept finding new excuses to be in the studio at the same time (oh look who we have here practicing his little jerkbending? Don't mind me I'm just going to mess with some buttons in the back please just keep doing what you were doing)
Sokka would start messing with the music when he noticed how frustrated Zuko couple get when he tried and tried and couldn't get something exactly right (I think his pirouettes, elevations and jumps would suffer A LOT due to less depth perception and maybe even inner ear damage resulting in balance issues)
Sokka would play a big part in letting Zuko discover the fun he can have while dancing without being under pressure

Taang: Jealous Aang (of the man of your choice)
Okay! Taang and Satoph and a little of Bei Fong family.
....
'The swamp shows us the people we have lost. The ones we love.'
In Aang's eyes, it was a good way to lose her, he thought as Toph's husband took her hand to take her onto the dance floor and dance to a song that he claimed to be their favorite, even though Aang knew Toph and knew her favorite song was Secret Tunnel. Still looking at her, the Avatar took a sip from his wine glass.
He hated hating visits and special occasions, not being able to fully enjoy being with his friends, even now that they were older and everyone had their own families and the occasions to see each other were becoming more and more special. The last time he had seen Toph was when Zuko's daughter was born. Everyone had gathered to meet Princess Izumi. The baby girl was beautiful. Aang was having a lovely afternoon with Zuko and the baby until Toph arrived. All the happiness and hope of seeing her died when she noticed that she was not alone. He was with her. And their child was with them, growing strong and healthy in her womb.
It had been too much and he'd had to come up with an excuse that were partially true to leave.
And that had been the last time he saw her, almost two years ago. Until inevitably they had to meet for her birthday in Gaoling. He hadn't dared to not go.
It was a good party, with lots of food and music and games and happiness. Toph's Earthbending and Metalbending Academy had never looked so fun and bright. There were at least 40 people Aang knew, and many more that he didn't. Toph's students were familiar faces whose names he could never remember, much to the Avatar's frustration. Katara and Sokka had danced many songs with Toph, happy and free of their usual duties. Suki and Zuko had been juggling flaming dishes. Lin, the beautiful little girl he had once fantasized about raising as his own when he and Toph inevitably married, was eating at least five different pieces of cake, with her grandfather Lao at her side, who far from reprimanding her, was eating cake too, smiling in a way he only did with his first granddaughter. Little Suyin (Aang couldn't even look at her) was happily moving her arms in her grandmother's arms, both of them dancing in a calmer way than her parents'.
And Aang didn't want to feel that way, that's why he had avoided being alone with Toph for a while now. Because he couldn't get those thoughts out of his head.
That should be my daughter.
Lin should love me like a father and not like an uncle.
Those should be my in-laws.
This should be my family.
Your smiles should be for me.
Your love should be mine.
Everything would be different if Satoru (don't think of his name, don't think of his name, don't think of his name) had never appeared.
The song changed and, guided by an irrepressible urge, Aang walked up to the couple and happily asked if he could dance with Toph. That man (don't think of his name, don't think of his-) smiled happily at him and took a step back. Toph arched an eyebrow with a defiant smile and took his hand, and they both began to dance.
They had both always been good dancers, which the other man obviously wasn't, because Toph began to dance in the wild yet graceful way that only the people who truly knew her knew she was able to dance.
"It seems that you finally cheer up a bit, you got us worried," she said between frantic movements. Aang noticed that people were beginning to look at them.
"A lot of stress lately," he said without lying but not telling the whole truth.
"Your Avatar Mumbo Jumbo will make you die young if you remain all work and no fun," she said turning around. Aang couldn't help it, he smiled for the first time that night. "It's my birthday. Have fun or I'll kick your ass."
"Are you happy?" asked Aang suddenly.
"I drank two bottles of wine and someone spilled cider on my dad. How couldn't I?!"
"That's not what-"
The song ended and they both stopped dancing, hearing their audience's applause. Toph raised her hands in the air and moved her hips. "I'm fabulous, I know!"
They both got off the dance floor, Toph walking over to her husband and wrapping her arms around his waist. That was something else that should be his. Her affection, her caresses, her real caresses, not the friendly punches she shared with her friends. Her love, her joy, wasted on that man. It was unbearable.
"Toru, can you get me another glass of wine?" asked her with a fake sweet voice. "Sorry, I said it wrong. It sounded like a question and it's an order. Bring me more wine right now."
"And what do I get in return, eh?"
"If the wine is good..." Toph quickly bit his lower lip. Aang had to look away so as not to succumb to every bad thought he'd had all night. "... Something very good later."
"This woman uses me as her errand boy,"  said Satoru looking at Aang. "I'm the happiest errand boy in the world."
That man walked away, happily and drunkenly dancing towards to the drinks table.
"Now, what were you saying?"
Aang looked around quickly before allowing himself to look at Toph. No one was looking in their direction. And Toph looked too good, her hair down, her pale cheeks as red as two apples, and a huge smile on her face.
"Are you happy, Toph?" he asked seriously.
His friend was perhaps too drunk to think that the question was a little weird. "Pffff, duh."
"Really?"
"Of course, man! Got everything I've ever wanted!" she said as if she was talking to a particularly dense boy. "What kind of question is that?! *jip*" she said, losing her balance a little for the first time that night. Aang held her arm. "See those girls eating cake at the table?" asked Toph pointing towards Lin and Suyin at the corner table. "Those are my daughters. And I don't need to see them to know that they're beautiful and strong and good. My parents are next to them, they no longer suck and they learned to listen to me and respect me and, this is wild, you won't believe it, we even talk about our feelings from time to time. It's diabolical, Twinkles," she laughed. "I'm surrounded by my friends, my best friends, who are my family on my birthday and at my Earthbending academy. And I travel the world regularly to check out the Earthen Fire factories. I have it all, Twinkles."
"And Satoru."
"Sure, I travel with Satoru. Someone has to drive, duh."
"That's not what I mean."
"Man, just spit out whatever you want to say Twinkles! Or let's dance again. Whatever."
"Toph," he said, leaning down and taking her by the shoulders. "Do you love Satoru?"
"What?"
"Do you love him?"
She looked confused for less than a second. "I married him, remember?"
"But do you love him?"
"Of course I love him, dunderhead!" she said removing his hands from her shoulders. "Why are you asking so many questions? I'm not drunk enough not to notice that you're acting weird."
"I-I just wanted to make sure that you're happy. That you have everything you wanted. That-"
"I love Satoru? Well, I do. I love him. I'd never have married him if I didn't want to share my life with him," she said almost aggressively. And for a moment, it almost felt like she knew. As if she knew why he had been acting distant and taciturn for so long. Toph opened her mouth, but said nothing for an eternal second, as if there were so many thoughts in her head, all too complex for her drunken stupor. Finally she just said, "He's the best choice I've ever made."
That hurt. It hurt more than being struck by Azula's lightning all those years ago. It hurt so much that he couldn't breathe, couldn't think.
"There's no more wine so I brought Suyin," said Satoru suddenly appearing, holding his daughter. "Your mother finally released her."
"I ask you for wine and you bring me a baby? Man, you do listen when I talk to you."
"I already sent someone to get more wine. Su wants to dance with you while we wait."
Toph took her baby daughter in her arms. "Is it true Su? Do you want to dance with Mommy?"
"Yaay! Dan wi mommy!"
"Very good, Badgermole. But the moment the wine arrives you go back to your grandma, I warn you."
The music changed to a slower one, and Satoru took Toph's hand again to dance, slower than before, swaying gently with Suyin in between. Lin, feeling ignored, ran across the entire dance floor and spread her arms, demanding to be a part of the dance as well. Satoru took his stepdaughter in his arms and put her on his shoulders.
It was then that the pain for the first time turned into melancholy, a silent acceptance of his defeat.
He had loved her and lost her. Just like the swamp once told him he would.
But at least he hadn't lost her to the unforgiving grip of death. He had lost her to another man. A man that hadn't lost his chance like him.
It was torture.
But it was at least a good way to lose her.

So I uh, don’t typically write fanfiction but it’s Tokka Week 2020 and I was inspired. This turned into mostly dialogue that I didn’t feel capable of writing compelling description around, and it could probably use some more editing, but if even one person enjoys it then it’s worth posting, right? That’s what I tell myself anyway 🙈
Jealousy
Despite the oogies she was currently experiencing, Toph’s feet were planted firmly on the ground. It may have been easier to prop them up on the table and avoid the vibrations of a certain cozy couple out on the dance floor, but she hated the vulnerability of being truly blind more than anything else, so she endured Sokka and Suki’s incessant touching and public kisses. It was difficult to ignore things with her seismic sight; it’s not like she could just turn her head to avoid seeing something when she had 360 degree vision.
Said vision is also what alerted her to the fact that Fire Lord Zuko was approaching her from behind.
“Why aren’t you out there burning up the dance floor, Sparky?” She asked without turning her head.
He took it in stride. “Mai’s busy.” She was currently on the dance floor, but in the arms of a very giggly Ty Lee. “Besides, I’m not one for dancing.” He sat in the chair beside her.
Toph smirked. “Weren’t you the one who had that precious dragon dance routine with Twinkletoes?”
“It wasn’t a—“ Zuko sighed and crossed his arms. “Well that was Aang. He can convince anyone to dance.” He gestured out to the crowd on the dance floor, where the groom was not currently dancing with the bride—Katara had been pulled into a surprisingly graceful dance with Zuko’s uncle Iroh—but with a blushing and stumbling Smellerbee.
Toph scoffed. “That’s because you’re all a bunch of pushovers! No one makes me dance when I don’t want to dance.”
“That sounds like a challenge.” Sokka’s voice reached her just as she noticed his approach. Teasing Zuko had distracted her; she hadn’t noticed him finally (finally!) separate from Suki. He fell into the seat on the other side of Toph.
“Everything sounds like a challenge for you, meat head.” Toph said.
“That’s my cue—“ Zuko muttered as he slid out of his seat and left the two to bicker.
“Why aren’t you dancing, Toph?” Despite the fact he came over primarily to badger her, Sokka sounded happy. His heart was pounding with the exertion from the rather intimate dancing he’d been doing with his girlfriend just moments ago, and there was a delight in his voice that was undoubtedly due to the occasion. There was joy to be found at every wedding, Toph supposed, but Aang and Katara’s was overflowing with it. Even though she had spent the majority of the time since dinner sitting alone, she didn’t mind observing her friends (as long as they weren’t giving her the oogies) and taking in the jubilant atmosphere.
“Nobody here is pretty enough to dance with me.” Toph answered, flinging something from her fingernails nonchalantly.
“I don’t think you’d be saying that if you could see the vision in front of you right now.” Sokka said, flexing his (admittedly) rather large bicep in her direction.
“Ha! I’ve never been more thankful for earth sight.” Toph propped her dirty feet in Sokka’s lap and was pleased when Sokka reacted as expected, pushing her feet to the ground in disgust.
“Everyone’s dancing.” Sokka cajoled.
“We’re not dancing.” Toph shot back.
“We could be!”
“We’re not.”
“I want to go back out and dance.” Sokka pouted.
“Where’s your much prettier and more muscular half? Go back out with her.”
“She took a break.”
“Did you crush her toes one too many times?”
“Hey! I happen to be an excellent dancer.”
“So you say.”
“I’ll prove it to you—“
“Please don’t.”
“Come on, Toph. Dance with me! It’s my sister’s wedding!”
“So maybe I should dance with Katara.”
“I want you to dance with me.”
Toph sighed heavily. She hated that after all these years, Sokka could still make her cheeks heat like this.
“Dance with me?” Sokka asked again, more hopeful this time.
“Didn’t you hear me before? Even Twinkletoes couldn’t convince—“
“Please, Toph? For me? Pleeeeease pleasepleaseplease—“
“Ugh, fine! The only thing worse than dancing is listening to you whine about dancing.” Toph gave in, just like she knew she would. As tough as she was, Sokka had always been one of her only weaknesses.
As much as she had resisted him, her heart still sped and her stomach swooped when she let him take her hand. It was not the first time she was thankful he couldn’t read bodies the way that she could.
Sokka pulled Toph along to the edge of the dance floor and placed a hand on her waist. She felt tiny under his large palm and long fingers. With one hand in Sokka’s and her other hand resting on his shoulder, Toph tried not to notice the heat from his skin that she could feel even through the fabric of his tunic, or the familiar and comforting way he smelled.
He pulled her close, but not so close that their bodies touched like the way he’d been pressed to Suki earlier. He started to lead her in the dance’s simple, slow steps.
Sokka leaned his face down so that his lips were close to her ear. “This isn’t so bad, is it?” He asked.
“No.” Toph answered, and against her better judgement she let some of the vulnerability she felt bleed into her voice. “This isn’t so bad.” Carefully resting her head against Sokka’s chest, Toph listened to his familiar heartbeat as they moved, perfectly in sync in all ways but the one she wanted most.

** UPDATED**Taang week 2020!!!
Taang Week 2020
So this is something I started on a few days ago, and I didn’t realize taang week was this week so it’s not finished. But, here is what I have so far!
There is some explicit stuff in here later, so um... yeah.
PS. didnt realize there was a theme going on when I posted this. so yeah. heh.
Aang opened his eyes and immediately shut them again to block against the harsh sun rays that were coming in through the opened window. Keeping them squeezed shut, he rolls over onto his back and stretches his arms above his head, groaning in the process.
He squints his eyes against the morning sun as he began to take in his surroundings. He wasn’t in his designated room in the fire nation palace. The thought should have concerned him, but at the moment, he was too hungover to really care.
He couldn’t believe he had been talked into drinking last night. He had only drunk once before, and it had only been a sip of Fire Nation Wine at Zuko and Katara’s wedding. Toph had given him so much shit the night before about being too high strung and needing to loosen up. Just to appease her and shut her up, he had done one shot, and after that, he really didn’t have the willpower to turn down more of the drink that was helping him have so much fun. Because of how he is feeling now, he will never drink again.
Rubbing his face with his hands, trying to wake himself up a little, he rolled over to his side and bumped into something.
No. Not something. Someone.
Aang’s eyes shot open and he was met with the sight of a mess of black hair, the color of ink, spread out on the pillow and her back. She’s not wearing a shirt as far as he can tell from her bare back, and both of her arms are hidden under the blanket. In the back of his mind, he also realizes that he is not wearing any clothes either. Judging from both, her and his body position, he concludes that he was just wrapped around her back in a very explicit manner. The thought causes Aang to blush when thinking about the possible events that led them to be in that position.
Sitting up on his elbow a little, Aang attempts to get a look at her profile, but it’s mostly covered by hair, so that only her nose is visible.
He flops back onto his back and digs the heels of his hands into his eyes, causing little balls of light to dance behind his eyelids. What the hell happened last night???
He remembers going to a bar with Sokka, Suki, and Toph after they had dinner at the Fire Nation palace with Zuko and Katara. Even though the royal couple didn’t feel like going out, the rest of the Gaang wanted to experience true Fire Nation fun.
Aang tries to go through the events of the night, but all he gets is just glimpses of what happened. He sees him and Toph taking shots of Fire Nation Whiskey at the bar while Sokka and Suki were on the dance floor. He sees him and Sokka at the gambling table. Dancing with Toph. Standing outside in the alleyway with Sokka as he throws up. Stumbling back to the hotel with Toph-
As soon as this memory comes to him, the girl next to him rolls over and curls into his side with her head on his chest.
Toph.
He can feel her naked chest against his side and her bare leg thrown over his. He is frozen in shock. If she knew they were in the bed together, naked, she would bend him into oblivion. He can feel his heart pumping hard and fast and know it’s only a matter of time before it wakes her up.
As if on cue, Toph groans and turns her face more into his chest.
“What the hell, Twinkletoes? It’s too fucking early for-” She cuts herself off as she realizes that she is nakedly cuddling Aang. Her whole body goes rigid and together they both jump out of the bed. Toph clutching the bed sheets around her body and Aang holding a pillow in front of his manhood as if it matters- she can’t see it either way.
“What the fuck are you doing in my bed?!” Toph screams at him.
“I don’t know! Why are you naked?!” Aang can’t help but look at her body that is covered by the sheet before averting his gaze just above her head. She really had filled out, developed curves; her hips growing a bit wider, her breast becoming fuller, and overall, became stunning. Her long black hair is falling over her shoulder and incredibly tangled.
Aang realizes that he has never seen Toph without her hair in her signature bun. Even when they were on the run as kids, her hair was either matted from sleeping or up in her bun.
“I’m allowed to be naked in my own room! Now get out before I murder you!” Toph screams.
Aang backs up to the door, feeling for the knob behind his back, before yanking it open and slipping into the hallway.
Just as he turns around, he crashes into Sokka. “What the-” he says, steadying Aang before he takes in his naked chest and pillow covering his front and then glancing at the door he just came out of. His eyes grew wide in realization.
“You didn’t!”
“Sokka please-”
“That’s Toph’s room!”
“Sokkaaa…” Aang pleads
“Oh my Spirits! Suki is not going to believe this! You know, I really had 2 gold pieces on you guys holding out a little longer,” Sokka’s voice rises with his unsuppressed glee.
“No! No you can’t tell anyon- wait. What do you mean you had 2 gold pieces riding on this? Were you betting that Toph and I would...” Aang doesn’t even finish the sentence.
“I never thought I would see the day where young Avatar Aang does the walk of shame!” Sokka boasts, completely ignoring his question.
Aang can feel his face heat up at this comment, “Shut up! You don’t know what you’re talking about!” Hoping to end the conversation, Aang pushes past him and to the door down the hall that leads into his own room.
“Yeah, okay! Well, I expect details later!” Sokka yells at him as he closes the door.
Finally alone, he leans against the door and stares into the undisturbed room.
What the hell was wrong with him? Toph??? Did he really sleep with Toph? He walks over to the unslept in bed before plopping down on it and resting his aching head in his hands.
Slowly, it begins to come back to him.
----------------------------------------------------
“Come on Top, it’s just one song,” Aang laughs as he drags Toph to the dance floor.
“Aang, seriously, I don’t dance!” He completely ignores her. Once they get to the middle of the floor, he turns to face her. He can see doubt and uneasiness playing on her face that is mostly hidden by her bangs.
“Hey, it’s going to be great. Here, we just have to get a little closer, like this,” Aang grabs her hands and pulls her to him. Toph steps forward a little bit, she can feel a slight blush creeping on her face but she is hoping that the cool air will be a good enough excuse. Their drunken state only adds to the fun and the sloppiness of their movements.
Aang places a hand on her waist and pulls her a little closer until their chests brush with every breath they take. “Now, just follow my lead.”
Every step Aang takes, Toph copies until she gets the dance down and is able to do it without waiting for instruction.
A smile begins to pull on her lips and soon laughter is escaping her as Aang spins her and pulls her flush against him. She can feel his chest vibrate with his laughter as well, but the sound of it is lost to the wind.
They dance to a few more fast paced songs before the DJ switches to a slow song with a soft beat. Both of the dancers become still in their movements. Toph begins to let go of Aang’s hand and move away, “Maybe we should sit this one out,” Toph mumbles.
But as she starts to pull her hand away, Aang tightens her grip and doesn’t let go, but gently pulls her back into him. He takes her opposite hand and places it on his shoulder before placing his hand on her lower back.
“Nah, don’t chicken out on me now,” Aang says in a low voice causing Toph to lean into him to make sure she heard him. He pulls her in close, closer than they were when they were dancing to the fast paced music. She knows that her blush is very prominent now and there is no way she can blame it on the alcohol or chill in the air.
She can feel his cheek brush against the side of her head every now and then as they move. A small, content smile graced her lips as she closed her eyes and soaks in the moment. Slowly, without realizing she has done it, she lowers her head and rests against his chest, listening to his strong and beating heart. Fatigue begins to set in as she becomes more and more engulfed in his scent and touch.
Aang didn’t really expect her to go along with him in a slow dance, this was much too intimate for her. But, when she laid her head against his chest, he couldn’t help but grin. He basks in the comfort of having her with him and the intimacy they are sharing. Without thinking, he presses a lingering kiss to the crown of her head.
Immediately, he realizes his mistake as her body grows rigid and she slowly raises her head slowly to ‘look’ at him. He knows she doesn’t realize, but her eyes line up directly to his as if she is really looking at him, stealing the breath from his lungs. Because she doesn’t immediately murder him, his confidence continues to grow with the aid of alcohol coursing through his system.
He reaches a hand up to cup her cheek as he takes in her features. Her skin soft and porcelain like, her milky green eyes that reminds him of a soft jade color, her small nose that leads down to her lips, full and slightly open as if to say something. Ever so slightly, she leans into his hand. Aang wouldn’t have been sure she had actually done that if he wasn’t looking at her so close.
Aang’s eyes stay on Toph’s lips as he leans down and he is sure that she pulls him a little closer by his tunic. He isn’t positive if it’s the alcohol that is fueling this surge of braveness or just his own stupidity and impulsiveness, but his lips barely graze hers, their noses bumping each other, before he fully seals her lips with his own.
They stand there, locked together as people move and dance around them. He can feel the song change to a more fast paced one with a steady beat, but still, they stand there. Toph tilts her head, deepening the kiss a little. Th sensation of his lips against hers warms her to the core and makes her toes curl in
She feels the hand that is cupping her cheek tighten its hold while the other remains on her lower back, still pulling her in. She slides her hand down from his shoulder and rests it over his heart while the other is gripping the back of his neck, making sure he doesn’t pull away. The kiss is so innocent that it short circuits her brain.
Toph hadn’t ever let herself consider the possibility of her and Aang.  They had slowly slipped past the friendship stage after Aang and Katara had called off their relationship a year or two after Sozin’s Comet. Katara had moved on with Zuko pretty quickly afterwards and Aang was weirdly okay with it and even congratulated the couple when they announced their courtship. Aang himself grew closer to Toph, the two of them traveling the world, putting down any resistance to the new Fire Lord.
Although her and Aang had slipped past the threshold of friendship and into something more, neither of them had acted on it. It was just something that made itself known in small touches, lingering hugs, and stolen glances. But now, something was happening and it was causing all sorts of chaos to erupt in Toph’s chest.
Toph had kept expecting Aang to eventually leave Toph behind, dump her at her parents or something, so she never let herself entertain the thought that he would want more.
Someone bumped into Aang, causing him to stumble onto Toph causing their lips to pull apart. Aang scanned her face, looking for any sign of discomfort or anger while Toph kept her hand on his heart, feeling for any sign or regret. Completely engulfed in their bubble, everything and everyone in the room fades to the background as they stare at each other.
“Aang, Hey! We gotta go!” they hear Suki yell for them. Both of them pull apart with embarrassment staining their cheeks, but Aang’s hand slips down and grips Toph’s, not willing to let her go just yet.
Gently, he begins to pull her after him as he walks off the dance floor and towards their friend. “Hey, Sokka is plastered and outside puking his guts out.” Suki says, jerking a thumb towards the exit. Aang nods and starts to walk outside, Toph trailing after him, her hand still in his.
“Hey, we need to get our coats, Toph come help me,” Suki says
“What? Why do I gotta help?” Toph says annoyed
“Because. Now come on!”
Toph casts one last glance at Aang before she gets dragged off to the Coat Check In. Not knowing what else to do, Aang heads outside and finds Sokka leaning against the wall of the bar holding his stomach.
“You good?” Aang asks, his breath coming out in a cloud.
“No. I keep puking. You’d think that nothing would be left in my stomach by now.” Sokka says miserably.
“As much as you eat, there won’t ever be an end to it,” Aang says laughing. A groan comes from Sokka's mouth as he bends over and throws up again. Aang grimaces and pats his friend on the back. Once finished, Sokka leans back against the wall and wipes his mouth just as the girls round the corner. His eyes immediately go to Toph and sees that her entire face is pink in what he thinks is embarrassment, and Suki has a wide smile on her face. They hand the guys their jackets and step back to avoid the vomit on the ground but don’t say anything about Sokka’s vomit or whatever they were talking about.
Finally ready to go, Suki loops her arm through Sokka’s who leans heavily against her, and begins walking towards the palace, not waiting for Toph or Aang to follow. Toph walks quietly beside Aang with little distance between them which gets smaller and smaller as they go until their shoulders are brushing against the other with every step.
As they walk, Toph’s feet become more and more numb with the cold and soon, she can barely see the vibrations because of her lack of feeling in them. When she stumbles on a dip in the pavement, Aang takes notice.
“You okay?”
“Yeah, it’s just hard to see since my feet are so fucking cold,” Toph says while wiping her nose with the sleeve of her coat.
Taking a look at Toph, Aang laughs through his nose before bending his knees and lowering himself slightly, “Here, jump on. You can ride me till we get back,”
Toph is stunned for a second, she doesn’t think he realizes what he just said. Her face burns with the implication that is in the sentence that he didn’t mean to put in. Trying to be casual, she faces him and reaches out a hand to feel for his back to get into position behind him.
Toph jumps onto his back, and Aang grabs onto the back of her knees, pulling her closer to him. She wraps her arms around his neck and holds on for dear life. Huffing a little at the complete lack of sight. She tightens her hold on Aang, her thighs gripping his hips a little tighter, she is completely at Aang’s mercy.
Aang notices her tense against him, and he realizes its because of her nervousness at the lack of sight. To try and put her at ease, he rubs his thumb against her leg and begins to walk again. When his thumb brushes the inside of her thigh, Toph tightens her arms around his neck and he can feel her breath against his neck stutter a little.
The slight feeling of his thumb rubbing circles mixed with the firm grip on her legs sends a shiver down her spine. Having him this close to her, especially between her thighs, even if he is facing the wrong way, is making a heat pool in her belly.
------------------------------------------------
When he walks into the dining room, he notices that everyone is there. Well everyone besides Toph, which he breathes a sigh of relief after noticing.
He trudges over and sinks into the chair next to Katara and puts his head in his hands, massaging his temples. Zuko, who was sitting at the head of the table next to Katara, was talking to Sokka about some trade deals he was planning on making with the Southern Water tribe and wanted his input.
“So, did you guys have a good night?” Katara asks Aang while buttering a roll.
Holding back a groan he says lowly, “Yeah. it was nice. Really helped me relax.” Aang looks up to see Sokka grinning at him.
Aang’s eyes widened and he shook his head subtly trying to get him to not say anything. But, being the person he is, he just couldn’t let it go.
“Oh yeah. Toph really helped Aang relax. Never thought it would have happened,” Sokka says with a mischievous grin on his face before taking a bite out of his eggs. Suki snickers behind her hand before stifling it behind her cup.
“Yeah, you wouldn’t believe the amount of fun they had last night,” Suki says when she sets her cup down. Sokka lets out a cackle of laughter at Suki’s comment and leans back in his chair, throwing an arm over Suki’s.
Katara just shoots them a confused look before shaking her head and commenting how good it was that Aang was finally relaxing.
A servant placed his plate in front of him as Toph walked into the room, her hair back in its bun. She makes her way over and sits in the only available seat left, the one next to Aang.  Katara and Zuko say their normal good mornings to her.
“You tired, Toph? Looks like you didn’t get any sleep, must have been a wild night for you” Sokka says, shooting a shit eating grin her way.
Toph picks up on the implied comment and pushes her foot more firmly on the ground, sending a rock into his knee hard enough to leave a bruise.
“OUCH! What the fuc-” Sokka says, looking under the table.
“I actually slept fine last night, Sokka. Thanks for asking.”
-----------------------------------------
What seems like an hour goes by but is probably only 20 minutes, before she hears the echo of his footsteps on marble, signaling that they are inside the palace. Aang eventually stops, and sets Toph down.. As soon as her feet make contact with the ground, she knows that they are directly outside her room, the door still closed.
“So…” Aang starts but before he can even get out another word, Toph has pushed up on her toes and fisted her hands in his robes, pulling him down to her, immediately pressing her lips to his, kissing him fiercely.
Although shocked by her actions, Aang is immediately kissing her back, grabbing her face in his haste to keep his lips near hers. Toph lets out a sigh when she feels Aang’s lips part her own and his tongue beginning to explore her mouth. This kiss is so much more than the one they shared at the dance hall. Where that one was soft and slow, this one was heated and fast.
This kiss was a mix of fevered lips, tongue, and breathy moans. Aang backed Toph up roughly against the door that led into her room. His hands seemed to be everywhere, leaving a burning path in their wake. Toph wrapped her arms around his neck, bringing herself closer to him. Aang’s hand left her face and began running down her sides, smoothing down her curves before gripping her hips, his nails biting into her skin.
Aang moves his lips and nipped at Toph's neck, eliciting a moan from her lips. The bite was sure to leave a bruise occurred to Toph as he soothed the bite over with his tongue.
She moans out his name and the sting from his bite. Not Twinkle Toes, but his actual name. The sound of his name coming off her lips in a breathy moan sends blood straight to his hard member.
Toph had never known Aang to be anything but gentle, but this dominant version of himself was a pleasant surprise. A darker part of her wanted him this way, wanted him to leave his mark on her, to feel his touch the next day.
Aang dragged his tongue along her throat up before reclaiming her lips with his own. Spirits, he could kiss. Where he learned to use his mouth like that was beyond her. The thought of other things he could do with his mouth made her groan into the kiss.
-------------------------------------
Breakfast seemed to never end with Sokka’s vaguely hinted comments and the awkwardness that could be felt between Aang and Toph. Aang was the first to leave the dining room. he wandered the halls of the palace, not really knowing where he was going, just not wanting to sit still or have to speak to anyone, especially about last night.
He thinks about the way Toph reacted to finding him in her bed this morning. He couldn’t read her reaction properly, was she disgusted or just shocked? After dancing around each other for so long, he finally thought they were getting somewhere.
Maybe he had been reading those interactions between the two of them wrong. Maybe he was reading too much into situations that had happened between them over the past two years. Maybe he was imagining the lingering touches, the way they sometimes sat too close together, or that one time, they fell asleep together beside the campfire, and she was against his back, holding on to him for dear life.
Aang shakes his head. No, there was no way what he was feeling was one sided. Sure, he had initiated most of these advances but sometimes, she would do little things. Things no one else would know were sentimental unless they knew Toph. Like sitting directly beside him at the campfire or actively seeking him out to tell her stories about the past air benders.
He eventually came to a room with shelves filled with books lined the walls. A little further in the room, there seemed to be tables and then beyond that, more rows of shelves. Aang was slightly surprised that there would be a library in the palace, but then he thought, why wouldn't a palace have a library?
Aang just stands there for a moment, staring into the library without really thinking much.
“So, are we going to talk?”
Aang jumped, not expecting Toph to be standing beside him. He thought she would be avoiding him just as much as he was avoiding her, and especially didn’t think she would want to talk about what happened last night.
“Uh, yeah. Yeah, let’s go back there.” Realizing that he isn’t going to be able to avoid this like he would like, Aang points to the corner of the library that is hidden behind the shelves. Remembering that she can’t see where he is pointing, he grabs her hand and leads her.
When they get to the back corner, Aang is surprised to seat over-stuff chairs and benches decorating the dimly lit area.
Toph throws herself down onto one of the chairs, and Aang takes the one directly across from her, but perches on the edge of the seat, clasping his hands in between his knees. He stares at her, flashes of her naked form covered by a thin sheet go through his mind. Aang shakes his head, ridding his mind of those thoughts. He needed to be level headed since what they were about to talk about was serious.
“So, talk.” Toph says, chewing at one of her fingernails.
Aang’s mouth falls open slightly, “You’re the one that suggested we talk!” he says, exasperated.
“You're the one who was naked in my bed!”
“You were naked, too!”
Toph didn’t say anything to this, just continued biting at her nail refusing to look in his direction. Aang’s shoulders slumped in defeat, “I mean, it was only a matter of time before…”
At this, Toph shoots up to her feet, “Excuse me, what the fuck is that supposed to mean?!” she yells, her voice dripping with venom.
Aang stands up to, his blood boiling at the thought of her denying what had been blooming between the two of them the past couple years. “Don’t even try to pretend what happened last night didn’t mean anything to you.”
“It didn’t!”
“Bullshit, Toph! I know you can feel what has been happening between us, I could see it on your face every time we touched,” he spits out. Toph doesn’t say anything to this, just adverts her unseeing eyes away from him. He can see her clenching and unclenching her teeth.
They need to get through this, they need to have it all out in the open. He is tired of not being able to touch her when he wants or to hold her. He wants to brush her hair out of her face and to throw an arm around her waist when the urge hits him.
Aang steps closer to her and reaches for her hand and says more softly, “Tell me it didn’t mean anything to you. Tell me I’ve been imagining the small touches and subtle comments for the past two years.”
Toph shakes her head just barely, “Aang-”
He moves even closer to her, until they are just a few inches apart. He dips his head down until their lips are almost touching, his breath ghosting over her lips.
“Tell me and I’ll stop.” He tilts her face up with his thumb and index finger on her chin. Aang’s eyes search her face before falling on her lips.
“I can’t,” Toph says, her voice barely a whisper.
Aang smiles and closes the distance between them.
----------------------------------------------
A new sensation broke through the haze of arousal: the vibrations of someone walking down the hallways towards them. They are still far enough away that they can't see Aang pressing Toph up against the door, but they were getting closer by the second.
Toph reluctantly broke the kiss and moved her head away. Aang, being denied access to her lips, began to kiss a line from her cheek to her jaw and down her neck.
"Aang-" She whimpered, her voice barely a whisper. She didn't think he heard her since he continued the assult on her neck. "Aang, someone is coming. They're going to see us," she tried again.
Aang grunted in acknowledgement before he bent slightly to grip around her thighs and lifted her. Toph let loose a girlish squeal-type noise, something she never thought would come from her mouth, and immediately wrapped her legs around his waist. Aang's hands moved from gripping her thighs to her ass so he could hold her up better.
His lips never left hers as Toph reached behind her and fumbled to open the door. Once through the door, Aang closed it with his foot before walking over to the bed and dumping her unceremoniously on the bed.
They both finally got a look at each other, Aang standing beside the bed, the moonlight streaming in from her open windows, and Toph, whose feet were still on the ground, looked up to where she thought his face might have been.
Aang could see her kiss-swollen lips and blush that spread down her neck and across her slightly exposed cleavage. Strands of black hair are falling out of her bun and down her shoulders in trendils.
Toph could sense his heartbeat, beating faster than she's ever noticed. She can tell that he is just staring at her, taking in her disarray state. She can feel her hair falling out of its bun and her shirt has shifted so that its showing more of her chest than normal.
The hesitation only lasts for a fraction of a second before Toph is pulling him down by the front of his robes at the same time as Aang leaning forward to push her back onto the bed. He slipped his hand underneath her tunic, feeling the heated skin there. He gripped her waist with both hands before shifting her up higher onto the bed so that her head was caressed by the pillows and Aang was resting between her legs.
Afterwards, when they finally stop, Aang is still laying between Toph's legs, rest his head against one of her breasts and his arms wrapped around her middle. Toph trails her fingertips up and down his spine, occasionally brushing over the scar that Azula had given him so long ago.
The air is thick with the smell of sex and the sweat that is drying on their skin. Neither of them talk, but instead, listen to each others heartbeats.
The movement of Toph's fingers on his back become slower and slower until they stop all together and just rest in between his shoulder blades. Her breathing has evened out into long deep breaths with the occasional quiet snore from the back of her throat.
Aang picks his head up and looks at her. Her hair is completely out of its bun, her headband somewhere in the room. He's never seen her hair down before. Not like this. It's incredibly tangled from him constantly running his hands through it and pulling at it.
Her head is turned to the side, exposing her neck, and he can see love bites marking from the base of her neck and down her chest.
The thought of how she is going to cover those enters his mind before he pushes it away. He wants other to see it. He wants everyone to know what they did last night, how he took her roughly.
The memories of the explicit things they did come back to him causing him to blush. They had gone at it for hours, multiple times. Once it was over and they would slump against each other, they would talk about the time that had been passing between them, and somehow, they would start all over again.
Aang crawls off of Toph and lays his head on the pillow next to her. When he has settled next to her, she immediately scooches back until she is pressed fully against him.
Aang wraps an arm around her waist, and presses into her back more firmly, burying his face in her neck, smelling her hair. He would never tell her this, but they fit perfectly together. Her body dips and curves in just the right places that make it seem like she is enveloping his body from behind.
Smiling contently, Aang kisses her shoulder before his head falls back against the pillow. He shuts his eyes, ready for the new day to start and for everything to be out in the open.

Not Quite A Dance, but the Truth
I have no excuse for this.
The Earth Kingdom town isn’t anything to write home about, but Ty Lee enjoys it anyway. It’s cute, the villagers are probably nice enough, and it was in a really pretty area.
It’s too bad Azula was probably going to burn it down in her search for where the Avatar and his companions went.
The soldiers were helping keep the villagers contained, but it was quickly apparent that someone was fighting back.
It was a boy probably only a bit older than them and he was yelling at the soldiers and then the fight started.
One of the soldiers swung on him. Within a minute he was on the ground and the boy was pulling out of a fighting stance with an elegance that was familiar.
It wasn’t the elegance of a dancer, but it looked that way. It was an extremely elegant fighting stance that looked so confusingly familiar that she shook off the thought.
“Get control over him,” Azula called, dismissing him easily as more soldiers tried to keep him under control.
Mai barely spared him a glance, turning to speak with Azula again.
Ty Lee couldn’t tear his eyes away from the way he was fighting though. Each soldier met the same end as the first. Ducking in and out as he put each one down and her eyes followed.
Five more soldiers and Ty Lee spoke up.
“Hey there!” She bounded up to him and everyone froze.
Gray eyes focused on the lithe form. He wasn’t breathing very hard, the calm measured breaths familiar too.
She could feel Azula’s eyes on her back, but she knew what she was doing. She had her suspicions, but she’d rather be sure than just say something completely ridiculous. Something impossible.
“Let’s make a deal!” She chirped at him.
“A deal?” He said, voice dull and eyes narrowing.
“Yeah!” She said, smiling broadly, “Fight me! Hand to hand, no weapons!”
“Why would I do that? Because you asked?” He said, eyes watching the other two girls behind her.
Ty Lee ignored the little murmur from the others and darted towards him, “Because silly, I’ll have the soldiers retreat if you win!”
He froze and she could feel the eyes on her still. The boy was watching her carefully, “What do they have to say about that?”
“If Ty Lee wants,” She heard, Azula’s voice calm.
She grinned, watching him take a moment, “Yeah.”
She smiled wider, quickly backing up and watched him mimic her. They started to circle and the soldiers quickly were creating a border. She could see Azula watching her, but she didn’t look worried. Mai was watching her with a calm she recognized.
Ty Lee waited for the other to make the first move. He lunged, light on his feet and she darted to the side.
Each movement was a grace that she recognized. She started the dance that she hadn’t done in years. She took three steps forward and he bent back to avoid a jab. Each move was carefully decided on and he dodged each one. When he came in it was an almost as familiar move, dodged quickly.
Ty Lee suddenly ran forward, hands on his shoulders and she held herself up for just a moment before she flipped over him. The strength he had was no joke, he didn’t even sway under her.
When she landed she turned quickly, but he had already rolled off. It was enough, she darted forward, pressing until he finally slipped up for one moment.
The strikes were enough to take him down and she darted back, staring as he glared up at her from the ground.
“Well that was interesting,” Azula droned, “Oh wait- no it wasn’t.”
“Yeah, that was boring and useless, but good form Ty Lee,” Mai said, standing there bored.
“Eh?” She said, looking back at them and shaking her head, going to crouch in front of him, “You guys didn’t notice?”
“Notice what, Ty Lee?” Azula said, watching her.
“It’s Zuko,” She blinked, watching both girls freeze and stare at her.

fun lil yue headcanons because i am bored
in canon headcanons:
-she despises seal jerky. sokka (and katara too a little bit) are shocked and appauled.
-she was a little bit sad growing up that she wasn’t a water bender. everyone thought that she’d be able to do it because she had the moon spirit inside of her, and she felt like she was letting everyone down when she couldn’t
-whenever palace life and princess duties got to stressful, or she felt too pressured by her father and the other elders for forcing her to marry hahn, she would sneak into the oasis and meditate by the fish pond, because sometimes she didnt have anyone else to turn to
-katara was her first girl friend her age
-moon spirit yue had a lot of fun during meteor showers. if one meteor happened to land conveniently close to where sokka and the gaang were then it was purely coincidental. no moon spirit meddling here. nope. none. definitely didnt send it to him as a gift.
-if yue lived in canon, she and toph would be best mf friends. dont deny it. two girls who were sheltered by their parents their whole life and ran away to travel with the avatar? imagine the bonding.
-yue has a similar relationship with seal turtles that zuko has with turtle ducks
modern au headcannons:
-anime lover. but she has a soft spot for the fun lighthearted animes. haikyuu and ouran host club are her favorite comfort shows. (yes her favorite characters ARE sugawara and haruhi)
-fav disney princess is rapunzel. pretty girl with pretty hair with connection to a celestial body? who else would she obsess over?
-not a stoner or a drinker but if someone offers her a hit or a drink at a party she wont say no. responsibke but still fun.
-i think shes make her own clothes from scratch. the perfect bday gift for her is a gofr card to joann fabrics so she can buy stuff to make pretty clothes for herself and her friends
-psychology major. i get major psych major vibes from her.
-when she finally left home she went off the grid while travelling and no one knew where she was for six months or when she was gonna come back. when she finally returned home the gaang threw her a party because they were so relieved that nothing happened to her and yes they did lecture her and tell her that if she was gonna travel the world for a few months to bring a damn phone next time. or write letters at least.
-naturally has brown hair so dark its almost black, but dyes it crazy colors. she prefers to keep it white but every now and then dont be surprised if she pulls up with pink hair.
headcanons that could work for both:
-much like katara she is a horrendous singer but a fantastic dancer. very graceful. shes half moon of course shes graceful.
-her favorite color is lavendar
-little bit of a history nerd
-hahn used to be a childhood best friend if hers but as they got older he turned out to be more and more of a sexist ass so she stopped being his friend
-she can match sokka with sarcasm but only gets snarky with him when no one else is around and he absolutelt hates it because no one ever believes him when he says yue is just as bad as him. she thinks its hilarious. sarcastic queen over here.
-she has a really ugly laugh that only comes out if she finds something truly hilarious. shes very good at holding it in because she hates how it sounds. (its actually adorable but yue still doesnt like it. its literally her normal laugh but with some snorts thrown in)
-tall. yue is tall. so tall. tall woman. she has height. tallest girl in the gaang second only to mai who is only like half an inch taller. talllllll ladyyyyyy.
-stan yue for clear skin

Some deleted scenes from my latest atla fic!
#1: In which Zuko adopts a dragon, and Mai really should be used to this by now
Just when she thinks he can’t surprise her anymore, Zuko goes and does something that proves her wrong. Like bringing home a baby dragon.
“I’m going to call you Druk,” he coos at the little coiled lump in his hands. “You’re lucky I’m here, otherwise Sokka might have called you something like Firebreather or Noodle.”
Mai has been introduced to Zuko’s turtleducks both before and after his banishment. Sokka’s not the only one who would be tempted to name a dragon Noodle.
“When Ty Lee said you wanted some time away,” Mai says conversationally, “I don’t think this is what she meant.”
He starts badly at her voice, but when he spins around to face her, he’s beaming widely. Spirits, he could light up the entire Fire Nation with that smile. “Mai! I thought you were coming back next week.”
“I got bored,” she repeats, smirking. “I missed Ty Lee, and gave my parents the slip when they said they were taking a detour. Seems like I wasn’t the only one who ran away. You’ve been up to a lot, hm?”
He chuckles. “Kind of,” he admits, and his expression turns serious. “The palace was getting to me, so I needed a break. I wasn’t intending on bringing Druk back, but I don’t mind.”
“Do the turtleducks like him?” she asks dryly.
“They love him. It’s weird, they’ve never actually seen a dragon before.”
“And you have? Before… Druk, I mean.”
He flushes, opens his mouth to speak, and closes it again.
“Zuko, that’s a yes or no question.”
“It’s… confidential?” he squeaks, flicking his gaze to the tiny hatchling winding around his hand, weaving around the limb before lying across Zuko’s shoulders like a very short scarf. It’s adorable.
She exhales. “When it stops being confidential,” she allows, “let me know before the others? And by that I mean the Fire Nation officials. I’m going ahead and assuming the Avatar and your other friends know.”
“Aang knows, but the others don’t,” Zuko corrects. “Of course I’ll tell you the whole story first.”
“Good.” She walks up to her best friend and embraces him tightly. He stiffens momentarily but hugs her back, careful not to dislodge Druk. “I didn’t just miss Ty Lee, you know.”
She can feel his smile against her shoulder. “I know. I missed you too, Mai.” He pulls away and holds her at an arm’s length. There’s a wicked smile on his face that’s somehow also completely devoid of malice. Not that she could ever see malice on him. “But you mostly missed Ty Lee.”
“One more word and you’ll find a knife on your royal person,” she warns.
#2: In which Sokka takes Zuko into the towns outside the Caldera to show him how much the place has changed
“You know what I think?”
Zuko hums and looks over from a scroll to his friend, who’s lounging on the bed with a map held above his head.
“I think the council members are jealous,” Sokka says.
Zuko raises his eyebrow. “What of?”
“Huh?”
“What would they be jealous of?”
“Oh,” Sokka exclaims, blinking in surprise. “They only have a few supporters among the nobility. Mostly in Caldera City. The people love you and your reforms, and your latest repeal of Sozin’s marriage laws won you even more favours among them.”
“There were more dissenters,” Zuko says with a frown. “I thought it was massively unpopular, even if it was the right thing to do.”
Sokka turns over and waves a hand vaguely at him, grinning like a fool. “See, that’s what I mean. You don’t care about popularity. You saw the marriage laws and knew that you couldn’t put boundaries on love, so you changed the rules. You found out why the war was wrong, and you ended it. Not without help, of course, but you did it all. You care about your people, and they know it.”
Zuko doesn’t know what to say to this, so he resorts to throwing a cushion at his friends face for having him confront feelings. His indignant yelp is a sound that leaves him chuckling for a good minute, so he lets it slide.
But the matter isn’t done yet, at least according to Sokka. On the last day of his visit, Zuko finds that there are no meetings scheduled for the day. He thinks he’ll spend some time in the gardens with his friend, like old times, but Sokka seems to have other plans.
“You guys have fun,” Suki says with a kiss to Sokka’s cheek and a clap on Zuko’s shoulder. “I’ll catch you later.”
Sokka pulls Suki into a proper kiss on the lips before he calls out a quick goodbye and drags Zuko out of the palace.
“Have you been to the towns and villages before?” Sokka asks as they make their way down the slope of the inactive volcano housing the capital city.
“Not nearly as much as I’d like,” Zuko admits. “I’ve been around the capital and Ember Island, but there wasn’t any reason for me to go down to the rest of the Fire Nation.” By reasons, he trusts Sokka understands that he means Ozai had strict rules to stay within the city limits.
“Huh. That’s not great.”
“I went to one of the towns once with my cousin, though,” he adds, expecting the familiar pang in his heart at the mention of Lu Ten before it hits him.
“He’s one of the good ones?” Sokka guesses.
Zuko smiles sadly. “He was like an older brother to me. You know, he was the one to tell Mom and Uncle that I was good with swords?”
“No way.”
“Ozai knew that I was leaving for a change in instructors,” Zuko continues, “but he never really cared either way at the time. He only really became a problem when Uncle and Lu Ten left to fight.”
“Ah.” Sokka rests a hand on his shoulder and squeezes lightly, and Zuko knows to draw comfort from the gesture. He misses Lu Ten dearly, but the sting of loss is numbed, now. He can think of his antics with his cousin during his early childhood without the accompanying sorrow threatening to overwhelm him.
They’re at the base of the volcano now, so Zuko slips up his hood. His hair is free of its topknot and falls over his scar so that he can blend with the crowd unremarkably. There’s no sign that he might be discovered, though, and no repercussions even if he is (except perhaps from his guards, but Ming won’t really mind once she understands why).
The first thing he notices are the sounds. There’s laughter, chatter, and the occasional yelling interspersed with off-key music. He’s already taken aback by how different it is from when Lu Ten helped him sneak out one night when his parents were away with Azula.
“I…”
Sokka smiles and loops an arm around his shoulders. “You haven’t seen anything yet, buddy. You’re going to love this.”
The wind blowing around them is cool enough to be uncomfortable, so Zuko tugs up his collar and raises his internal temperature to compensate. Sokka seems to be unaffected by the chill, which is only to be expected considering his friend spent most of his life in harsh southern winters. They stop every few paces to look at what the roadside stalls were selling, and more than once Sokka actively considers the merits and demerits of buying something they sell before deciding against them, moving forward, and darting back only to walk away again.
The fifth time this happens, Zuko finds a permanent solution in the fire-dancers performing in the streets. It’s his turn now to haul his friend over to them, and Sokka is all too willing to oblige as Zuko watches the performers exaggerate their movements with graceful bending.
“You know, this was pretty cool in the Fire Days Festival too – spirits, are you okay?”
From how distressed Sokka suddenly looks upon seeing his face, he automatically reaches up to touch the scar only to find his cheeks wet. He hadn’t even realised he was crying, but he scrambled for an explanation to keep the other boy from panicking.
“I used to watch the fire-dancers with my mother every year when we went to Ember Island,” he says, swiping at his eyes. “I always wanted to learn their bending style, it’s much more flowy than any other form of firebending. And… it’s been a while since the Fire Nation was this happy outside of festivals. And, well, Ember Island.”
Sokka nods slowly, but he doesn’t look any more placated.
“I guess it never really felt real to me,” Zuko mumbles, ducking his head as his eyes start to burn and glaze over once more. “I’m always stuck at meetings or fighting the council to pass a reform that would help my people, but…”
There’s a lump in his throat that stops him from speaking further, but Sokka leads him away from the crowd gently and finishes it for him.
“You never saw how your decisions impacted your people.”
Zuko manages a strangled chuckle. “They’re happy,” he whispers.
Sokka holds him an arm’s length away, hands firm on his shoulders. “That’s what I wanted to show you,” he says. “They’re healing, and they’re happy. I know most of the people you see are the ones who benefitted from the war, but when we were making our way to the capital before the eclipse, we noticed that it had left its mark on the Fire Nation too.”
Zuko nods, thinking about how he’d received news of an important weapons factory suddenly stopping production because of some problem with the river it was located on. He’d investigated it further and had declined to deliver that information to Ozai once he heard how badly the nearby town had fared.
“We’re the ones who instigated the war,” Zuko says, slumping against the wall of some building. “There were so few people who didn’t suffer for it.”
Sokka slides down next to him wordlessly. It’s not self-deprecating for him to say this – it’s the truth, and Zuko’s doing his best to make up for his ancestors’ terrible choices. They weren’t mistakes, not when each tragedy piled up on top of each other with the sickening, deliberate motive painting them red with blood.
He’s going to help the world heal, and if that starts by healing the Fire Nation? Well, that’s all for the better.

Azula’s New Groove (Part 1)
Summary: Literally The Emperor's New Groove except it's Azula and her serving girl.
As any good story does, this one begins with a koala-sheep, a talking koala-sheep crying in the rain. A vividly silver-blue flash of lightning brightens the jungle, reminding the koala-sheep of what she has lost. Because this particular koala-sheep can not only talk, but also bend lightning. The koala-sheep knows this but has forgotten such in her overwhelming mental distress. Such turmoil is the product of a rather massive ego taking a blow twice its size.
Thunder rumbles, echoing through the trees as rain soaks the wool of the koala-sheep. The camera pans in on the pathetic creature and then it quickly pans out because, have you seen a wet koala!? Those things are horrifying. What is more horrifying is a koala that is also a sheep.
For the sake of a good story, the camera pans back in. The koala-sheep continues to weep to herself as the downpour intensifies. Beneath the jungle’s canopy and with such a heavy curtain of rain, the koala-sheep resides in the semi-dark upon a miniature island--a small hill surrounded by floodwater.
She looks up at the camera, but does not see it. She is alone. Completely and totally isolated beneath a fluttering curtain of spanish moss and dangling ivies.
But this is not where our story beings, dear readers. The story begins in a much more opulent setting. There is a montage here, but our main character isn’t much of a dancer and, despite her graceful firebending, she had tripped during its filming so the montage was cut.
And so we begin with two old women. Lo looks up at Azula. Azula who is a human being and not a very emotionally tormented koala-sheep. “Fire Lord Azula, it is time to choose your husband.”
“Every Fire Lord needs a harem.” Li adds.
Azula glowers down from her seat. As nice as a harem sounds, her options are limited to Kei Lo, Jet, Chan, Sokka, and Zuko. Azula narrows her eyes at Zuko. “Is this the line for the bathroom?” he asks.
“No.” Lo answers.
“It is the line…” Li adds.
“To be your sister’s husband.” They finish together.
Zuko’s face scrunches in disgust. “These poor men.” He shows himself out.
Azula climbs down from her perch to inspect the miscreants more closely. “I don’t like your face.” She says of Kei Lo. “You are a fuckboi, too much testosterone, and let me guess, you’ve got a good sense of humor.” She points at Jet, Chan, and Sokka in turn. She turns back to Lo and Li, “is this really all you have for me?” She doesn’t see TyLee in this group of suitors.
“Well, we could have done better.” Lo admits.
“But there was a doilie convention in the capital.” Li continues.
“We just had to attend.” Lo confesses and holds up a small, oblong  doilie made of red lace.
“It will be perfect for our sacrificial alter.” Li adds.
“Your what?” Azula quirks a brow, suddenly rather intrigued.
“Our coffee table.” They say in unison.
“Red lace goes nice with polished cherrywood.” Li points out.
“And it will go wonderfully with our ritual dagg--our ruby encrusted teacups.” Lo flashes a toothless smile.
While they ramble on and on, trying to keep their occult practices a secret, it is best to show you readers our other main character. One of the several people involved in dismantling the Fire Lord’s life as she had known it.
Her name is Yoiko, some time ago she had been the servant specifically designated to hold up a bowl of cherries for the Fire Lord. That is still her job but she has been furloughed because the Fire Lord has found out that cherries aren’t supposed to make your mouth burn and your throat close up. She has yet to decide on another fruit to replace the cherries that she is allergic too. Mangos are too large and grapes are cliche.
Newly unemployed, Yoiko finds her way back to the Fire Nation palace. She clears her throat, “Excuse me. I'm here to see Fire Lord Azula. You see, this morning I received an order to…”
The guard cuts him off. “She’s waiting in her throne room. Up six flights of stairs, make three lefts, and then take another flight of stairs down one floor, grab a knife from the kitchen, hand it to Lo and Li, and…”
“I’m not here for the ritual. And I know how to get to the throne room.”
“Right, yes.” The guard replies with an awkward cough.
As Yokio passes she nearly trips over a cabbage.
“My cabbages!” He declares.
Yoiko, deciding to earn herself some virtue points so that she may look holier than thou, picks up the cabbage and hands it to the man with a kind, “here you go.” Though it might just be that she is actually a genuinely nice person.
“Thank you.” The cabbage merchant says.
“You're welcome.” Yoiko smiles. She has to smile before she speaks with Azula and finds herself unable to smile for the next week or so. “Are you okay?” She asks the merchant. “What happened?” Yoiko expects to hear a story about how the merchant had thrown off Azula’s groove. Heaven knows, she has run into quite some trouble for accidentally interrupting Azula’s very rigid daily routines.
Instead the man says, “I ran into the Avatar.” He shudders. “Evil, evil little arrow headed, ‘pacifist’, monk. And that lemur…” he shudders with a deeper chill coursing through him. “It’s beady little eyes, they stare into your soul. And have you heard its chitters, they’re like the screams of a thousand cabbages.”
Yoiko blinks, she has never heard a cabbage scream. “Well I’m going to see the Fire Lord, not the Avatar.”
“Don’t look into its eyes!”
“I’ve looked into her eyes before.” Yoiko shrugs. “Several times. Most of the time they’re all judgemental and…”
“No! Not the Fire Lord’s! The lemur’s!”
“I’ll keep that in mind. Do you need help collecting the rest of your cabbages? I have a few minutes before I need to speak with the Fire Lord.” Yoiko offers.
Azula finds her never ending supply of kindness rather appalling. She does not see this small act of kindness, but she senses it. She senses it and it chills her to the core. But nothing is more chilling than our next character.
“And what brings you to the palace?” Zhao asks.
“Well, your highness, I mean...wait, what is your title?” Asks the peasant.
Zhao scowls. A scowl that Azula has long since grown to resent. She looks upon it as she enters the throne room, her throne room. It is a hideous scowl that nearly draw attention away from his obnoxiously groomed sideburns and his collection of wrinkles. Admiral Zhao potantly reminds Azula that man is descended from monkeys. What is more is that the man looks like a corpse. He has the pallor and droopy eyes of one. Next to him stands former Fire Lord Ozai. He had lost to Aang during Sozin’s comet while Azula had won her Agni Kai. Fully anticipating to beat a twelve year old marshmallow of a boy, Ozai had handed his daughter his former title. Decidedly, if he couldn’t manage to beat a twelve year old, he is not fit to run the Fire Nation. So Azula had kept the title for herself and her father could do nothing about it save for snarl at her and remind her that the Avatar will come to dethrone her shortly and put Zuko on the throne. What Ozai is unaware of is that Zuzu does not want the throne, he has a musical career to think about  and she has already made a deal with the Avatar to keep him from being a pest.
Azula has noticed that her father, brimming with resentment, has suddenly grown  rather fond of Zhao. Zhao who goes through right hand men like Zuko goes through hyperfixations. Azula imagines that Ozai will be tossed aside by the time Zuko finishes his mumble rap obsession.
Azula looks from Zhao to the peasant that he is currently quarreling with.
“But I need food and shelter, I have six children!”
This is the kind of dispute that is usually brought to Azula so that she may dismiss the needy man. Instead, Zhao steals what should have been her line, “you should have thought of that before you became peasants!” He adds a devilish chuckle for good measure before dismissing the man.
“Peasants are tiresome.” Azula remarks, “it’s a shame you don’t have someone else to deal with them, right?”
“Absolutely correct!” Zhao agrees.
Azula clears her throat. “That would be me, Zhao. Your Fire Lord. The one who gets to call people peasants.”
Zhao cuts her a nervous glance. “Right, yes, your majesty.” But Azula has heard more than enough. “You see, it isn’t such a big deal, I was just trying to, ah, free up your busy schedule, so you can go out and have fun with your friends.”
Azula’s eyes narrow. “I like my busy schedule and this is fun for me. There is nothing funner than telling peasants that their needs mean nothing and that their gods can’t protect them from me.” She leaves out that she no longer has friends.
One of Azula’s servants emerges, “Yoiko is here to speak with you.”
“Lovely.” She smiles. This is the very peasant she has been hoping to terrorize. “And you can show yourself out, you are fired!” She holds her chin up and folds her arms over her chest. She has banished far too many people, so this time she will settle for only firing Zhao. Her eyes narrow further as she recalls that she had banished Lo. And further still when she recalls that Zhao is supposed to be dead. She squints at the man; yes he is supposed to be dead. That might explain why he looks like something ten years deceased.
Yes, she has made the right decision in firing him.
“But, princes--Fire Lord Azula, I have been more than loyal to the Fire Nation for decades…”
She thinks that it might have been a few centuries. She looks upon that appalling face, yes definitely centuries.
“I even destroyed the moon…”
“In other words, you have had your moment of glory, it is time to show yourself out.” She looks upon her throne. “You’re even sitting on my throne!”
“I was just keeping it warm for you!”
Azula scowls for nothing is worse than sitting upon a chair that radiates the warmth of someone else’s buttocks. She thinks that this warrants banishment but she is in a merciful mood. “Go on, get out, I’ve got peasant matters to deal with.”
Perhaps she would have banished him if she had known what was to come.

Note
what do you headcanon the rest of hsm as? asking for art reasons -iid
👀
okay so it's not a strict one-to-one for each character, more like what if a HSM-esque story took place what would everyone do
Zuko - As I've said before, he's the diva, the primadonna, the face of theatre, the Sharpay. He can act and sing and dance and direct like nobody's business, and worst of all, he knows it. The reason Zuko loves his theatrical talent so much? Because for the first time ever he's good at something, and AZULA ISN'T
Azula - Carrying on from that, Azula is kind of a prodigy. She's smart, athletic, and good at charming adults and scaring peers. The only thing she can't do? Perform. She can remember lines but delivers them with all the grace of a dying platypus-bear. She can't hold a note to save her life. She has two left feet. But by god that's not gonna stop her demanding a role in every show Zuko puts on, because if Zuko can do it, of COURSE Azula can.... right?
Aang - No matter what universe they're in, Aang can and will find a way to befriend Zuko, and in this one, it's through dance. Aang is a pretty good actor but the real reason Zuko keeps him around is because Aang is the best dancer in the school and beyond, the kid can learn any dance in a minute and come up with a better one in two. He helps Zuko choreograph every musical he puts on and despite Zuko's best efforts they eventually become bffs outside the theatre too. The closest HSM parallel Aang has is probably Ryan
Katara - Now I gotta say, Katara stumps me a bit. She doesn't strike me as a very musical kind of person by nature, but if the ease with which she slips into June Pippinpaddle- oppsokoppolis and Sapphire Fire is anything to go by, she reads to me as more interested in the acting than the singing. Like the disguises in the show, Katara doesn't come up with the big ideas, but she's flawless support to those who do. So while she's not gonna be delivering any stunning solo songs any time soon, she's the one who brings Zuko's dialogue to life, absolutely invisible behind her character, and is always a crowd favourite
Sokka - Sokka doesn't like musicals. He swears he doesn't like singing and dancing. He's a jock! Stop laughing Katara it's true. That's why it banes Sokka's existence that Zuko and Aang will never stop hounding him to audition for a role, all because of a fateful coincidence where after baseball practise Sokka thought he was alone in the locker room shower and absolutely belted out La La Land by Demi Lovato, unaware that Zuko was in the bathroom the whole time. Turns out Sokka has an amazing voice, no matter how much he tries to blame it on shower acoustics, and Zuko has been determined to get him to be the lead in a show ever since (Sokka is a Troy/Chad fusion of unparalleled denial)
Toph - Now for obvious reasons, the appeal of the great spectacle of a theatre performance is somewhat lost on Toph, but if there's one thing she can appreciate it's a nice sound, and how to get equipment to maximise it. She's effectively Zuko's one-woman sound team, she knows the audio equipment better than anyone who can see it, and most of the school's gear is covered in Toph's Braille notes for herself, not that anyone minds. She also puts her genius ears to work on the musical front, able to pick out someone not pulling their weight in a group number with pinpoint accuracy, and Zuko keeps her on hand to let him know when the sound is perfect
Suki - Suki is Kelsi with a backbone, she's a brilliant pianist, and Zuko is loathe to write a song without her. There's no more common sight in the music room than Zuko sitting on top of the piano while Suki plays one song repeatedly with minor variations until they find the sound they're looking for. Toph joins in on these sessions all the time to act as a tiebreaker when Suki and Zuko can't agree on what note to use. It's seeing Suki and Zuko hanging out that tempts Sokka's fragile bi ass into joining theatre more than anything else
Needless to say they revolutionise musical theatre and bop to the top

favorite au ideas for iwaoi and kiribaku??? also, do u ship tododeku?
Warning: I don’t know what being concise means, apparently.
Favorite Personal iwaoi AU idea: I have two AU in mind since forever and dammit, I should just draw or write them.
Fifties AU: Oikawa is the president of the student council (all megane for our needs), Iwaizumi the golden quarterback. Childhood friends that took different routes, only to realize that their friendship has always been love. But it’s the fifties, my guys. Also, a lot of boogie-woogie that booty. And as a bonus, Kuroo Danny Zuko Tetsurou (with Bokuto and Akaashi as best rebel pals) and Tsukishima Sandy Olsson Kei. But, only visually-wise. Bc Tsukki is savage and Kuroo a sweet dork.
Ballroom AU: Oikawa is the son of a ballroom teacher and ex-pro. When he was a child, he met this grumpy adorable boy in his mother’s school. They both took lessons, become inseparable friends, until Iwaizumi’s family had to transfer to another city. Oikawa continued dancing and eventually entered amateur competitions. Iwaizumi, instead, dropped. It’s only in high school that they meet again. Iwaizumi learns that Oikawa is taking a pause from competitions and has just started to do some minor teaching in his mother’s school. Iwaizumi is looking for a part-time job, and Oikawa is looking for someone to help him with the kids and gramps he teaches to. The deal is easily made. It’s during those lessons that they start to dance together. After all, they have to show to the students how things should be done. It’s only natural, right?“Iwa-chan, do you remember how to do that?” - “Of course I do. You, though, you sure you can do the female steps?”. Oikawa just snorts and goes so very beautifully into position.Eventually, Iwaizumi discovers why Oikawa dropped out of competitions. To teach, Oikawa had to learn the female part, and against all odds, he found out he likes it better. He likes better the graceful position, the flashy sequences, the following instead of the leading. He’s always been good at listening to his partner and enhancing her steps. But following, he feels like he can bring out the 100% even from himself. Once he tried, he couldn’t get it out of his mind. He found himself practicing in front of the school’s mirrors without even knowing how he got there. Of course, his partner noticed. At first, she only teased him, but soon she started feeling annoyed and lonely, and Oikawa with her. Then, he ended up blurting hurtfuls “you should do that this way”, “why can’t you do that, it’s so easy”. Their break up and the drop out from competitions came next. And obviously, Oikawa’s mother’s disappointment, too.But all of this doesn’t matter when Oikawa and Iwaizumi dance together, and they do that a lot. In dance halls, during lessons. They dance together, and they fit together. After all, dancing together is like being in a team, a team formed by two people on a dance floor, and Oikawa doesn’t feel lonely anymore. Iwaizumi reminds him that just by holding his hand, and he feels kind of invincible. Then, Oikawa’s mother sees them, dancing a waltz right after a lesson. She’s not pleased. She wants her son to compete and reach the top, he has the skills to do that. But she sees them. She has eyes, thank you very much. And there are other types of competitions. Sure, unofficial types, but same-sex couples can only take part in those. He can reach the top there, for now. They both can… with a little help, of course. “Hajime, for God’s sake, broaden that step! You have long legs, use them. Now again, from the start”.It soon becomes clear that Oikawa’s mother has expectations. Oikawa is thrilled. He knows she wouldn’t spend a minute over them if she thought they didn’t have a chance, and truthfully, she spends a lot of hours instead. So Oikawa is thrilled, while Iwaizumi cannot breathe. He tries to, he tries his best to make this work. He sees how much Oikawa is happy… but that’s the problem, isn’t it. In the end, he can’t do this thing, this partnership thing, and he tells Oikawa that much.“I’m saying I can’t dance with you anymore”. - “What? Why? We’re so good together!”. - “Oikawa, I’m homosexual”. - “… I’ve always known that, kind of”. - “You have, haven’t you. Hah. You also know that I’ve always had feelings for you? … Yeah. Of course not. I realized it myself only when we got apart. That’s how I realized I like guys, in the first place. But now I’m good. About us, I mean. I really just want that friendship we had when we were kids. You don’t know how much I’ve missed it. But I can’t be your partner, I can’t do this. You… you don’t see yourself when you dance. It makes me want to be your partner in every other way”.*MIC DROP*. Iwa-chan, “now I’m good about us” my ass.
(I’m a hopeless ballroom and boogie dancer, OKAY. And yeah, I can’t help but want iwaois as childhood friends even in AUs.Also, I’m so proud to say that here in ol’ conservative Italy, official competitions are open to same-sex couples. Strange, isn’t it?)
Favorite kiribaku AU idea: I’m so in love with the canon fantasy AU. It’s actually a fanfiction. I’ll never get past that blissful moment when the canon confirmed the fanon and dragon!Kiri bit my ass. But then, nearly all the canon kiribaku content is a freaking fanfiction, most of the time I’m just “wtf am I even reading, this is too gay to be real”. Anyway. Back to the point. I don’t have a personal kiribaku AU yet. Just a lot of canonverse ideas and hcs. But as soon as I think of one (and believe me, that’s going to happen) I’ll make sure to share it!
Do you ship tododeku? Oh, yup! Not one of my favorite, but I read so many kiribaku fics and tododekus were just there that I kinda take them for granted. I like izuocha too, tho, and todomomo. Actually, I don’t really mind any other ship in bnha (apart from bakudeku and kacchako). My otps are kiribaku first and kamijirou second, so these babies are off limits - I don’t do multiship with my otps. The other ship tho, I kinda like em all? Hah.
Thank you for asking, anon! :D

Random ATLA Headcanons
(most of them involving Zuko sorry)
- Zuko's scar ended up very symbolic in the Fire Nation. For most of his life, it was a source of shame and disgrace. But after the war ended, when people realized peace was possible and they learned the true horrors of what the Fire Royals had been up to, that changed. The scar became a symbol of standing up for your beliefs no matter the personal cost. Protesters from all over the world would smear red paint across their left eye to show their support of their causes. Zuko was stunned but extremely touched, his mark of shame became a mark of honor. The practice outlived Zuko and became part of the culture, a lot don't even remember what it was from, only that red paint across the eye meant that they would not let tyranny stand in the way of peace.
- We know Azula was born insanely talented but that almost meant she had a harder time controlling her fire as a child. It was so powerful, it often got out of control. She sleep bent all the time and accidently burnt things far too often. Ursa/Zuko helped comfort her when she was upset but it was Ozai who taught her to channel her fire, to concentrate all her wild energy into a hotter, blue flame. Azula constantly feared losing control, of herself and of her things, because of this and is a major reason why those betrayals hurt so much and led to her downfall.
- Azula never recovered from her mental breakdown, she had good days of clarity in which she cursed Zuko and Team Avatar and swore that she would have revenge. But she also had a great many bad days when all she could do was scream and writhe on the floor. The instability had been seeded in her since childhood, once she started down that road she shattered completely. Zuko made efforts to get her help but also recognized that their father left scars he could not see nor heal. She died young, in her 30's, but Zuko kept her comfortable until the end.
- Azula actually did care for Zuko, she thought he was a weakling and a bit pathetic but she had pleasurable moments with him from her childhood. She was being sincere in her offer for Zuko to come home because she honestly did miss having him around (even if it was just to torment and manipulate him but that's practically how Azula shows affection). Ozai had been highly suspicious and initially wanted to throw Zuko in prision once he was back in the Fire Nation. It was Azula who praised Zuko's ruthlessness and gave him credit for the Avatar's death. Azula had no inkling that Aang might still be alive, she did it to change their father's mind. After Zuko betrayed, the first cracks in Azula's madness began to show, worsened by the fact that Ozai punished her heartily for convincing him to trust Zuko.
- After burning his child, Ozai denied Zuko any real treatment other than was needed to keep him alive. As such, Zuko's burn is much worse than it really should be, physically not just aesthetically. Uncle helped but without skill and materials there wasn't a lot he could do. He can still see out of the eye but not terribly well. He can't open the eye all the way, but he also can't close it right either. He can cry out of it but the tearducts were badly damaged and make tears painful. While the skin is pretty much dead and desensitized, there's a vague low-level hurt that Zuko has become accustomed to. Once he got on better terms with Katara, she bugged him until she let him look at his eye. She was horrified at the unrepaired damage and set on fixing the internal workings. She helped clear his vision a bit, soften the delicate skin around his eye and take away some of the pain. Zuko was so immensely grateful he started, to his embarrassment, to cry and cried harder when he realized it didn't hurt any more.
- Aang's death was a long, slow process. He was only about 70 when he died but he seemed much older. 100 years in suspended animation in the iceberg took it's toll. He went grey long before the others and he started to physically and mentally decline around age 50 or 60. When he did pass, everyone was sad but also a little relieved that the cheerful boy who liked riding penguins was finally free from his degenerating mind and body.
- Katara didn't truly consider Zuko a friend until months after the end of the war. She forgave him and then finally trusted him after he took lightening for her but as an actual friend, her care and affection took longer. The foundation was in the months following his coronation as Katara had to keep healing him and they bonded a lot, by the time the year anniversary came around, she was as close to Zuko as she was with the others.
- Toph never really reconciled with her parents. She felt guilty for what happened and for hurting them but any time she made a (half-hearted, brash) attempt to bridge the gap they insisted that she come home and be a good girl. She became bitter and resentful of their controlling nature and began avoiding them altogether. She continued to use the surname Bei Fong to rub it in their faces. Her daughters only saw their grandparents a few times because neither they nor Toph could accept each other faults.
- Katara became a social activist after the war. She and Aang, now married, travelled a lot together and separately saving whoever they could and spreading peace. Once the kids came along, Katara needed to stay home for longer periods of time but she still travelled when she could and still fought the good fight. When they were older, the kids would accompany Aang and Katara on their travels. This kept up for many years until Aang/Sokka's death in which she decided she wanted to go back to the Southern Water Tribe and devote herself to being a healer. She laughed when she heard the next Avatar was born close to her home and she knew that she could never really stop.
- One of the many, many reasons Zuko and Sokka became the ultimate best bros is that Zuko also enjoyed tinkering with machines. He wasn't nearly as creative and inventive as Sokka but he was knowledgeable on mechanics from his years at sea and pretty good at math. On lazy days, Sokka would come up with wild ideas and Zuko would do the calculations and begin building.
- But seriously, Zuko and Sokka are the actual best friends to ever friend. They hang out whenever possible which is never as often as they want but when they do meet up it's like they never seperated. Sokka has so much sway over the Fire Lord that some people joke he should be made a council member, which he eventually is to many people's distain. They remained best friends until the day Sokka died.
- The Gang didn't find out that it was Ozai who gave Zuko his mark until the hearing where Ozai was sentenced for his war crimes. Zuko tried to stop it but Iroh insisted that Ozai be held accountable for, what Iroh considered, his most despicable crime. There was a lot of hugs and tears from the Gang and Zuko was just super uncomfortable. Over the next few weeks, Ozai received quite a few visitors and was taught lesson after lesson one what happened to those who messed with a member of Team Avatar.
- Zuko actually came really close to dying from Azula's lightening. There was a lot of damage and Katara and other healers worked full time on Zuko for days to keep him alive. He almost slipped a few times but Katara (and eventually the rest of the Gang when they arrived) would yell and plead and he'd come back. It was tense for a few days but finally he stabilized. When he was conscious again, he was legitimately shocked at how concerned and relieved the Avatar and his friends (now Zuko's friends) were that he was ok.
- Sokka died fairly early, non-benders don't live nearly as long as benders. I'd place his death a few years after Aang who also died very young for a bender and an Avatar. He was mourned across the world for his heroism and bravery. He was at the North Pole when he died, his friends seeking care from the best healers in a futile attempt to try and save him. When he passed, the full moon darkened for a full minute before coming back brighter than before. They were immeasurably sad but they knew that Yue and Sokka had once again reunited.
- Once they found Ursa (ignoring the Search, Zuko just found and tracked her down and brought her back to the Palace), Katara grew close with her. Katara was immeasurably excited for Zuko to be reunited with his mother but also jealous. She tried to be supportive and wound up really liking Ursa. She was kind and gentle but also strong enough to murder a Fire Lord for her children. Ursa reminded her a lot of Kya and Katara soon looked to her as a pseudo-mother figure to help her when she was struggling.
- Likewise, Hakoda became another paternal figure in Zuko's life. Iroh was great and wonderful, Zuko's true parent who deserves that honor, but Hakoda thinks that a boy needs to learn other things. Whenever Zuko was at the South Pole, Hakoda would take Zuko out on trips, teach him to fish and hunt and do all the things the men of the village are expected to do. It's hard and he's not very good at it, but Zuko learns these skills. More importantly, Hakoda gave Zuko advice that maybe Iroh couldn't give, served as a younger, slightly more accessible adult man for Zuko to turn to.
- Basically what I'm saying is the Fire Nation Royals and the Southern Water Tribe Chief's family basically adopted each other into their families. The world doesn't quite understand but this is the dawn of a new age where anything is possible.
- Ursa was the one who initially introduced Zuko to swords. She was a master swordswoman herself and, as a non-bender, she needed some way to defend herself. Ozai deemed her swords skills unworthy and so she was forced to practice in secret. Young Zuko would watch her fascinated as she danced and maneuvered her sword with all the grace of a dancer. She taught Zuko the basics before she disappeared and he kept up the training as a way to honor her memory.
- Mai and Ty Lee ended up fitting into the group quite well. It was weird at first but once they stopped thinking about it's like they'd always been there. The two girls really blossomed in a healthy, open group and were able to recover from Azula's abuse. Mai and Zuko could be sickeningly cute and they never seemed happier than when they were with each other. Ty Lee spent most of her time with the Kyoshi Warriors but steadily developed good relationships with the Gaang. She became closest to Aang and Katara (and Zuko of course) and Toph and Sokka found themselves drawn to Mai's dry, cutting sense of humor. A gathering never felt complete without the two of them there.
- Ty Lee visited Azula whenever she was in the Fire Nation, apologizing for the betrayal (recognizing that it was a significant reason why Azula broke) and trying to help repair Azula's mind. It never helped and more often than not Ty Lee left in tears but, like Zuko, she persisted in visiting. Mai never saw Azula again after their last encounter at the Boiling Rock. She said she'd suffered enough at Azula's hands and had no desire to see her again. She knows Zuko is a little upset at the curt dismissal but Mai will never forgive the Fire Princess for everything that happened.
- Toph adopted Zuko as her big brother pretty early on. She stomped her foot one day and declared that Azula wouldn't accept him then Toph was going to steal Zuko away. The boy was confused but found he genuinely enjoyed having a younger sister to tease and dote on and carry around again. Toph would always burst into the Fire Nation Palace and demand to see her big brother, even when they were both old and grey.
