it’s ok to give yourself a break. it’s ok to cop an L when this realisation comes as you’ve got 3 assignments due by the weekend, because now you know the way to treat yourself. even if your leg is broken and it hurts you’ve made it from being stranded once again to finally arriving at the hospital. this is where you know how to help yourself, and whether you want to right now. self-care is what gets you to where you want to be. it is not where someone’s decided you needed to go.

maybe self-care is hugging your stuffed animal and crying it out. maybe it’s grabbing something green and hugging it because you’ve noticed that green things seem to take your attention away from yourself. maybe it’s closing yourself in your room and admitting to yourself you don’t have the will to do the dishes even though you “need to,” and deciding to stop beating yourself up over it. who can say that that’s not what you’re supposed to do, if that’s what works for you?
