I’ve been having storage issues with my iCloud so I thought I would get rid of my Sims 4 mods folder from my iCloud drive to free up some space. Apparently I just deleted the folder off of the face of the planet and can’t get it back.

I’ve been building that folder for over two years.

I’m going to go cry now.

Why Representation matters

Today I had a swim meet and while my friends were swimming I was chatting with this kid who likes to hang out with us. She came to the meet in a Camp Jupiter shirt so we talked about our favorite PJ books. I had just told her my favorite Magnus Chase book when she started talking about Alex Fierro.

For those who are not familiar with the series, Alex Fierro is a gender fluid child of Loki (and one of my all time favorite characters) who uses she/her and he/him pronouns.

So she says something about how she loves her then stops. She then tells me “I don’t know how Alex identifies today, I would have to ask her.”

This kid is no older than 10 years old and she is respecting the gender identity of a gender queer character. When she told me that I swear my heart grew a billion times. THIS is why representation matters, children are learning that not associating yourself with your birth gender/sex is normal and are respecting other people’s pronouns.

I didn’t read Magnus Chase until I was 14 and it took me a little while to understand Alex’s identity, I did learn and now I identify as gender queer. It warms my heart that the younger generation is aware, that they will be respectful and be more comfortable with their own gender expression. THIS is why being Queer should be normalized. THIS is why we should include Queer characters in children’s books/shows.

Kids will understand anything if you explain it to them. Being Queer is not complicated and won’t “confuse the children.” If you tell them that you like the same sex or use neo-pronouns they will listen. They will understand.
