Hi, I have been learning Korean for a bit of a long time and I am confused with the grammars. (으)나 마나 can you teach me please?

Hello! I've also never learned this grammar pattern, so I'll try to explain it as best I can from what I learned via Google. Essentially, [verb stem] + (으)나 마나 is used to mean that whether you do an action or not, the result is going to be the same. It's often used to express that there is no use in doing something. For example:

공부하나 마나 시험에 떨어질 거예요. = It's no use studying for the test--I'll fail anyway.

그 옷을 입어보나 마나 너무 비싸서 못 사요. = There's no use in trying those clothes on; they're too expensive, so I can't buy them. (hope this is correct!)

잠을 일찍 자나 마나 어차피 아침에 졸리게 깨어날 것 같아요. = There's no use in going to bed early--I think I'm going to wake up sleepy anyway.

홀리데이는 사람마다 의미가 제각각이에요.

어떤 분들은 설렘만 가득할 수 있으며

어떤 분들에겐 내리는 눈과 함께 우울함이 동반하기도 하고

또 누군가에겐 트리 밑에 화려하게 포장된 선물들 사이에 화려하게 위장된 불안감도 찾아 온다고 할 수도 있죠.

hi everyone !

it is very cold out lately.

it’s the kind of cold that cracks my skin and stings my lungs when i inhale too deep all at once.

cold enough to make reminders of the weather to my loved ones, in case they go out and catch a cold.

i hope you all have worn warmly enough.

the holidays may feel different to everyone.

to some, it may simply mean pure joy and spirit.

for others, there may be a sense of sadness when it comes to the end of the year. the holiday season may be nothing more than existential anxiety wrapped in tinsel.

it’s the closing of a chapter — the final checkpoint to look back — and when we near that final page, we find ourselves facing an incredible awareness of the passage of time.

“time flies” we say. “what happened for it to already be the end of the year?“

good question. what have i done?

have i done enough?

have i become enough?

and how harrowing it is to be met by the realization that maybe i am nowhere near the version of myself i want to be.

in the past year, perhaps you have experienced crippling loss (or losses), pain, heartbreak, doubt, beginnings, endings. perhaps you have lost yourself, badly, and are still in the process of piecing yourself back together again.

perhaps you’ve chosen a new path, but are struggling to push forward. you have maybe done some healing, cut some people out of your life.

or maybe you’re still stuck. maybe you want to retreat.

whatever it is, you are not where you were the last time you saw snow. and the cold is a stark reminder of that.

but i can assure you you have grown.

you might not know it now, but in time, you will see that everything has happened for a reason. that reason will appear when everything has happened. you will feel it inside you. you may even already have the answer within you somewhere.

but right now, you are right where you need to be.

that is enough.

it is cold out, yes.

but the wind will always makes it feel colder than it actually is.

your skin may crack and your lungs may sting.

but you crack and you sting because you are alive.

i crack and i sting, too.

i only hope that this winter, you may also find warmth.

if that warmth is by chance me, i ask you to please hold me close. just like how on my coldest nights, you have brought me warmth, without you even knowing it.

if this winter you wish to stand still, you can stand still. i’ll be still right next to you.

and maybe we can watch the snow fall, drift, and melt together.

spring might come faster that way.

Saying Your Purpose/ Intention

I find that whenever I want to state my intentions, I like to simply gravitate towards the future tense grammar -거예요, which is not only a super rookie method but also not very accurate in conveying the intended meaning. I decided to compile some of the most important grammar here with similar but differing sentences to convey their differences.

1. V - (으)러 가다/오다

Used to convey that you are going to/ arriving at a place in order to perform a certain action. Therefore the ending verbs can only be 가다/오다/다니다.

e.g., 식당에 그녀석을 헤어지러 갔어요. I went to the restaurant to break up with that guy

2. V - (으)려고

Used to convey the intention of the speaker. The 2nd clause happens 'in order to/for' the 1st clause to happen. This is the most general form that can be used with all verbs, but cannot be used with future tense.

e.g., 그녀석을 헤어지려고 저녁으로 만났어요. I met him for dinner to break up with him.

3. V - (으)려고 하다

Used to express the subject's information or plan that has yet to be acted upon. It means 'plan to' or 'intend to'. When '(으)려고 했다' is used, it means that the intended action did not materialize as expected.

e.g., 오늘 저녁 할때 그녀석이랑 헤어지려고 해요. I plan to break up with him at dinner today.

e.g., 오늘 저녁 할때 그녀석이랑 헤어지려고 했어요. I planned to break up with him at dinner today (but it failed).

4. N 을/를 위해(서); V -기 위해(서)

Used to show that the speaker will do what is in the 2nd clause, for the sake of accomplishing the 1st clause. This grammar can be used with future tense.

e.g,. 제 정신 건강을 위해서 오늘은 그녀석이랑 헤어져야돼요. For the sake of my mental health, I need to break up with him today.

5. V - 기로 하다

Used to express the making of a promise with another person, or to oneself. It is usually used in the past tense - '기로 했어요'.

e.g., 친구랑 그녀석한테 오늘 헤어지기로 했어요. I promised my friend that I would break up with him today.
