I'm amused by these messages as well. For very different reasons.

I'm answering this one but there are other messages like this in my DMs and inbox. I will not respond to all of them though because this is a DIARY. It's made for text, not speech. If some of you hate my voice enough, DM @justathrowawayheehee. He posts my voice REGULARLY so go complain to him. I've only posted my voice like... 3 times. If you left a similar message, this is for you to read as well. I probably answer your other questions here too. ~My Voice~ Honestly, I've been wondering the same thing. My voice isn't exactly attractive in the slightest. Though, I wouldn't say I sound 13. The girl thing I get as I'm intersex and most people assume I'm a girl based on my feminine mannerisms (I was raised by my mom and halmani and I mostly had female friends growing up. Yes, I was the "gay best friend."), but the 13 part is a little odd. In my opinion I sound my age (Early 20s) but perhaps that's just me. Either way, yeah, I know. I know my voice sounds ugly and strange to people. I'm very used to it by now. Hahaha. I've even adapted a different voice for when I leave the house so I don't get recognized or make someone look at me funny when I talk to my mom. I do want to say something though that you may not have heard. I imagine anyone who's met you doesn't talk to any of you you long enough to say anything because you're unpleasant. You're probably a random 15 year old on the internet who feels insecure so allow me to give you life advice. It may come in handy for when you need a job, or want to ever make friends again like you did in elementary school. (It's so sad to peak so early. ^^) If this is supposed to be insulting, I've heard this so many times when I WAS 13, that I can't take any of it seriously as an adult. I just don't care and it's not like it can "go away." I don't sound attractive. I'm not disagreeing here. Thing is, it can't be insulting, it's background noise because it doesn't hurt me enough to be insulting. Hit me with something at least SLIGHTLY more upsetting than "you sound like a minor." That just makes the ... like 5 people that think I sound hot, sound like they like minors and I'd rather not insult 5 people when you're aiming for the one who doesn't even care about what you're saying. This is good advice for if you go to a bar. Don't tip one guy's motorcycle because the rest of the gang will try to kill you even if your target doesn't. If this is general commentary, I recommend not telling a transmasc person that they sound female. It's "realistic", sure, but you also shouldn't tell every fat person they're fat. Obvious, yes, but not something anyone wants to think about. (Though you might have a degradation kink and if that's the case, don't force your kinks onto others, it's fucking weird. Seriously. I'm not joking. Consent is important.)

im going to say this as gently as i can but it probably won't be very because i don't have the energy to elaborate as fully as i need to and this cannot continue to take up space in my head. this is coming from the perspective of someone living in the US partaking in the US (mental) healthcare system

the internet's fascination with (incorrect) self diagnosis (re: if you move your hips to the side when walking around a desk you're autistic!) paired with an aging traumatized population and skewed resource distribution has done a lot more damage to the greater mental health scene in the last four years than i think any of us want to admit

if you have been diagnosed with something between now and march 13, 2020 - ESPECIALLY if it was before march of 2022 - you need to get reevaluated from scratch in person (if you are able to) by someone that will develop an actual relationship with you. not by a telehealth ghost psychiatric service and joint pharmacy that will throw adderall or zoloft at you for $15 a month (!!!)

trauma acts like 90% of the mental health issues 15-35 year olds are posting about. PTSD presents with nearly every symptom known to man. treating it improperly will kill you. i'm really really tired of listening to people on tiktok give mental health advice that's being parroted by actual LCSWs and LMHCs/CCMHCs and PMNHPs when it's just... flat out incorrect at best and actually life threatening and dangerous at worst.

is there a very real issue with supply and demand of controlled substances in this country? yes. is there a very real issue with accessibility of therapeutic and diagnostic appointment setting for disabled clients? yes. the answer to both of these is not creating ghost pharmacies and practices that do not follow up with patients and commonly commit patient abandonment. it is much more involved than that and it cannot be solved through services like hims and hers and donefirst and helloklarity and fucking onlinepsychiatrists dot com are you serious

i understand that the mental health space in this country is difficult and dangerous and hostile to navigate. especially in a small town it is inhospitable for marginalized people. you are preaching to the choir when you're saying that to someone like me. but i'm just very frustrated when people immediately turn to "just get your drugs online, obviously your problem is X"

there is no obviously in mental health. there is NEVER an obviously in mental health. i hallucinate. i hear voices. i see things. i have manic and psychotic episodes. i experience intense waves of suicidal ideation and depression. i dissociate, often. i have impulse spending issues. i have problems with obsessive thoughts and compulsive movements. i have severe offset sleep issues. i have anger issues. i have attention issues. i have some pretty insane intrusive thoughts. do you want to know my current diagnosis?

ptsd (and technically adult gender dysphoria, but.)

i have had a laundry list of others come and go. bipolar 2, MDD, GAD, schizoaffective disorder, insomnia, BPD, OCD, ADHD, autism, intermittent psychosis - just to name a few.

four psychiatrists and 12 years to get to the root of the problem. 60+ years of experience could not give me a straight answer. i really don't want to be that asshole but i don't think some googling and perusing social media and one (1) visit with someone that's not intimately aware of you and your history is going to make safe and calculated decisions wrt your health.

establishing a relationship with one person (after doing some shopping!! look around!! get a sense of the vibes!!) is so so so necessary.

as always - this does not apply to the people it... does not apply to. if you cannot afford appointments, don't have insurance, etc. this is primarily targeting the people that have simply decided that using these services is more convenient than calling someone - even though it is available to, and within reach for, them.

we cannot improve a fundamentally broken system by continuing to break it. it frustrates me that that's what we're doing. making and buying teslas won't save the planet, seeing a therapist from betterhelp will not fix your childhood trauma.

-Precious People, Four Makes a Family, That Little Thread, My Neighbor Mr. Roboto, and Forgive Me, for I Have Sinned. (Greatest to least in the top five.)

-I try to respond to every comment I can, but some I just don't know how to respond to! I'm mentally kissing every commenter on the head though. Mwah.

6 – What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

-Angstiest ending? I don't know if I've ended anything super angsty, despite my love for the genre. I prefer hurt/comfort. Can't say I can answer this one.

7 – What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

-Oh, That Little Thread for sure. But only because TESSDE isn't remotely finished haha. But I'm still very proud of how TLT came out. :)

8 – Do you get hate on fics?

-I have had a stray hate comment here and there, but I just meme and dab on the haters until they die from their own cringeness. #HatersLoveMe

9 – Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

-...The smut kind? I'm not sure I understand. Read 'You're a Feisty One, Aren't You? I Like That', if you need specifics, I guess. (Only if you are above age obviously.)

10 – Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

-Oh my god I used to on FFNET. I don't think it's crazy, but even before I discovered FFNET, my friend got me into writing crossovers, and it was a massive Inuyasha, Fruits Basket, Code Geass, and Death Note combination with self inserts. I miss it, it was a good stupid time, haha.

11 – Have you ever had a fic stolen?

-I've had people try to tell me they can't get writing down correctly, and oh, would you mind helping me write this out? What about this? Until slowly I'm literally writing their story and they're POSTING IT ONLINE. ON Ao3/FFNET. LIKE. A PARAGRAPH AT A TIME.

INSANITY.

But also I was one of the first few people who had the Ao3 scalpers target their fics, but I have no idea if someone is out there on Wattpad or something using my shit. I don't self search, so I do not know.

12 – Have you ever had a fic translated?

-Nope!

13 – Have you ever co-written a fic?

-Yes! Not on Ao3 though. (Ah good old days of middle school and writing dumb things with friends.)

14 – What's your all-time favorite ship?

-I'm a self shipper by trade, I'll admit it. But I was a very big Sesshoumaru / Kagome shipper in my baby years. Now I lean more towards Loid / Yor. Love those idiots.

15 – What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

-TOO MAN TO NAME. I REGRET LEAVING ANY FIC UNDONE, BUT I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO GO BACK. The past is in the past and it's time is over, unfortunately.

16 – What are your writing strengths?

-Focusing on characterizations and researching accuracies for making things logical not only in the fantasy realm but also reality. I love combining the two and giving people a little educational lesson along side their story time. It pleases me to teach others new things and myself. I also think my pacing has gotten a lot better over the years.

17 – What are your writing weaknesses?

-I tend to structure things differently than most people, and genuine writing formats— even using em dashes, I never learned until this year the difference between it and a hyphen— so it comes across as lesser than other people's writing, I think. Less polished. I like bouncing things around textually, having breaks in spots to let the mind "breathe" in between words or phrases to try and give it a bigger impact, but it weakens actual structures sometimes.

That and word choices. I'll be stuck for ages on what word to use. I hate repeating words or phrases, so it'll take me longer than necessary to just choose a damn word.

18 – Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

-I've done it many times and think it's fine! I use translators because I am unfortunately only educated in English (and my brain has difficulties learning other languages), but I try my best and do ask around friends if things are accurate if they speak the language.

If you're not sure what it says, just translate it through a friend or Google. Or, read the bottom AN to see if the author translated it for you. I grew up with American's using broken Japanese in their fanfics, you think I'd see dual languages any different? Lol.

19 – First fandom you wrote for?

-Inuyasha? Naruto? Crossover? I don't remember!

20 – Favorite fic you've written?

-Biased. 'The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: DragonBard Edition', otherwise known as TESSDE. It's my bread and butter, my longest length story, and one I would die to complete. We're technically half way there in terms of arcs, but definitely not in chapters, haha. I look forward to the day it's complete, and I hope others enjoy it too.

Honestly, it's hilarious looking at this list because bar 1 and 3, I feel very little affection for any of these fics. The curse of writing for a popular ship and then only writing for rarepairs 😩

Eeeeh. I tend to respond to comments on fics that are WIPs or I feel a particular affection for; otherwise, nope.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

100000000% The World Aflame. Albedo/Venti destroying a city together??? Yeesh.

Uhhhh.... maybe my P5 Ryuji/Akira fic? But that's just shameless fluff all the way through, so...

I've had a few death threats, but they've disappeared since I made all my fic archive-locked.

Sometimes, yeah--but I definitely feel more comfortable in M-rated fic. :')

Nah--but I do write a lot of AUs, if that counts.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

HAHAH SO. I wrote a Danny Phantom fic back in 2010 when I was like ~12 and someone stole the premise and wrote it better than me. I was so furious I locked the FFN account and it sits there, immortalised forever--or until FFN dies, which may be soon tbqh.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Yes! Several. It never fails to make me incredibly happy. I've also had podfic written, which is also hugely !!!!!!

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yep!

14. What’s your all-time favourite ship?

Kirk/Spock.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but probably won’t?

And By Morning, my Albedo/Aether American Gods AU. It's delicious, but I also wrote it ~3 years ago so I'd have to start again from scratch because I now think the prose is kind of trash LOL. It's such a sexy concept though.

16. What are your writing strengths?

I... like writing? Does that count? LOL. I'm not sure what I'm good at, really. I just hope I make it enjoyable to read.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Plotting--although this is something I'm actively working to improve. Also, not editing as I write.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

Has to be a really careful balance. I personally am a hater on the Google Translate translation, where someone just dumps a sentence in English into their target language and pastes it wholesale into their fic--unless it's something you can reasonably expect folks to know, like using mijo/mija in a fic about Spanish speakers.

I think it can go into cringe territory super fast, though, depending on the level of slang. But if you're looking for cringe, then go ahead!

19. First fandom you wrote for?

God, fuck. I don't even know?? My memory is shocking. I definitely wrote and posted Sherlock fic on my old AO3 account, and I wrote that Danny Phantom fic mentioned above. Maybe it's Danny Phantom fic ?????

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

Short fic: talk to me (talk to yourself), which I wrote in a fugue in like an hour. It's SO perfect I can't even be mad at it.

Long fic: cross the rivers of my mind, which I'm gonna finish next year!! 😤😤😤

These two monsters are completely unrelated aside from being next to each other in alphabetical order. Unless you've got a very interesting story for how a three armed giant and a child's ghost possessing a bunch of debris are connected.

The athach is a strange offshoot from the regular giant species. Larger than most other giants at 18 feet tall, they have huge, venom dripping tusks protruding from their upper jaw. Far more attention getting however is their third arm, much thinner and longer than its main two, which sticks out from their torso. This arm whips about almost with its own intention, usually working with what the athach is doing but sometimes acting in contrast. They rarely get along with other giants or large creatures in general, instead staying among themselves or picking a band of smaller creatures to bully and rule over.

Attic whisperers are undead formed from a neglected or lonely child's death. Each one looks radically different, as they possess a variety of items that were associated with the dead, such as artwork, toys, clothing, or just dust and splintered wood. They don't have a head when first formed (which doesn't affect their stats at all), and typically seek out a proper item to use for their head. Most find a small animal's skull, but others will use similar items to replace their head. Like the child that formed them, attic whisperers are lonely and usually hide in isolated areas, often going dormant for years if undiscovered. They'll rouse if discovered, or if another child is brought into close proximity of them. They'll desperately try to keep a potential playmate nearby, singing nursery rhymes or leaving out old toys for other children to find, which can lead to tragedy if there's any misunderstanding or if the other child attempts to leave.

Athach Large 9th level wrecker [giant] Initiative: +13 Big Crushing Fists +14 vs. AC (2 attacks) - 55 damage. Dual Hits: If both fists hit during the same turn, the athach can make a poisonous tusks attack during its next turn as a standard action. Miss: 20 damage. Poisonous Tusks +14 vs. AC - 85 damage plus 25 ongoing poison damage. Natural Even Hit: The target is also weakened while taking the poison damage. Swift Claw +15 vs. AC - 15 damage. Attic Whisperer 2nd level spoiler [undead] Initiative: +8 Vulnerability: Holy Breath Stealing Bite +7 vs. AC - 5 damage plus 5 psychic damage and the target is dazed (save ends). First Failed Save: The target is weakened instead of dazed (save ends). Second Failed Save: The target is unconscious until it takes damage or a creature spends an action to shake it awake. Voice Stealing Touch +7 vs. PD - 5 ongoing psychic damage. Natural Even Hit: The target loses its ability to speak (hard save ends, 16+, or until the attic whisperer steals another target’s voice). Until it gets its voice back, it can’t cast spells, use bardic songs, or any other action that requires speech of any kind, and the attic whisperer can perfectly imitate it. If the target dies while its voice is stolen, the attic whisperer can imitate it permanently. Otherwise, the attic whisperer loses the target’s voice if the target saves, or the attic whisperer steals another voice. Aura of Sobs: While engaged with the attic whisperer, enemies with 12 or fewer hp take a -2 penalty to attack rolls and MD, and can’t benefit from bard songs. AC 18 PD 16 MD 16 HP 60

Getting & Using Magic

Using Magic

In my head, using magic is all about weaving together the twelve basic mana types (see previous post) in various configurations to do…basically everything.

I don’t think incantations are going to be a big part of spell casting as much as intention will. I think the will you put behind the spell, and then how you weave it, will carry a lot more weight.

Of course, some mages use incantations because that’s just how they weave magic. Others wave their hands or dance. Others need to be in direct contact with their target, etc. But all that has more to do with physically manipulating strands of mana into place. Intention is more about taking those manipulated strands and then…activating them. That’s the only word I’ve got right now.

Getting Magic

So, how do people go about getting magic?

The short answer is: you’re born with it. But it’s not quite that simple. People are either born a mage or not. But that doesn’t mean they can wield mana right out of the womb. I wanted people to have to work for it. So, something has to happen to “activate” their magic abilities. In Viency, just being near a large amount of free floating mana is enough to activate a dormant mage. This activation is called sparking.

So, where do people go to spark? Obviously, it would be the largest reserves of mana known in the world. In this case, those locations would be the Dungeons of Danrya. The act of going into a Dungeon has to be a pretty big deal. Like, something of cultural significance, a rite of passage, or something. I called it a Questing because I couldn’t think of anything else that was simple and self-explanatory.

During a Questing, a young person ventures (alone) into the nearest Dungeon. Some people do travel to different reasons to take their Questing at a Dungeon not their own, but since travel is expensive, that’s mostly very wealthy people.

Once inside the Dungeon, you have to survive. And, at some point, usually not recognizable to the mage themselves, but it will be a definite “defining moment” type thing in story, the mage sparks. And that’s when they get their one to two mana sigils somewhere on their body, which are like tatoos of the mana they can control. At the same moment, their body also begins actually generating those one to two types of mana, which can lead to temporary mild physical pain or mood swings (depending on the mana types gained).

I have just realized that I haven’t given I lot of thought to what the sigils look like. Like, I have some runes of the actual sigils that I’m going to use, but I don’t have any idea for how they’ll appear on the skin. Are they big? Blue? Black? Red? Do they look like scars or more like inked tatoos? I’m not sure. I’ll have to give this some more thought.

Since the different Dungeons reside among different cultures, I wanted the age of Questing to be different. For instance, in the survival-of-the-fittest focused land that is Izzia, the Questing age is 12 to 13 years old. Franstric is only slightly less warrior-focused, so their Questing age is 13 to 14. In contrast, the country between Izzia and Franstric, Obrunan, is more about getting their kids in with the church and completing that training first. After your stint as an Obrunese acolyte, if you’re a Chosen of Kathandi, then you can step foot into the depths of the main church and test yourself against Danyra’s Cathedral at the age of 16 to 17. This is actually the oldest Questing age in Viency. Garaeland’s Questing age is 14 to 15, while Solia’s is 15 to 16.

Each society really only gives a person two to three opportunities to test themselves for magedom. In Izzia the day is your birthday. In Franstric, the day is your nameday (which is actually three to four months after the day you were born on). In Obrunan, the day must be either Kathanday (the holiest of days on the Obrunese calendar, which only occurs once every two years), or the current Kham’s holy day (Kham being the highest of high priests). In Garaeland and Solia, the day is called the Vault Day and Garden Day, respectively, and consists of three days a year (Spring, Summer, & Fall) specifically set aside to let young people enter the Dungeons. The winters in Garaeland make the trek to the Vault difficult. In Solia, since Danrya’s Garden is on an island in the heart of the Whirling Sea, winters make the Sea particularly impassable. Instead, I figure in winter, Garaeland & Solia hold a day of mourning for those who have fallen in the Dungeons. Not quite sure on that yet.

For me, I find it a lot easier to come up with cultural tidbits about Izzia & Obrunan than Garaeland or Solia. Maybe because I spend the most time writing about Izzia & Obrunan to begin with. Izzia is where my main character is from, and Izzians culture clash with their nearest neighbor, Obrunan, quite a bit. The major clash being that Obrunan is deeply religious…and Izzia isn’t.

I’ll probably throw something up here at some point talking about the various cultures of Viency and how they interact with each other. That might be cool.

After seeking retribution for the victims of the lawbreakers, they take them to Baek Sung-Mi for imprisonment. Unbeknownst to Team Rainbow, she conceals her organ trafficking operation catering to VIP clients.

When Jang Sung-Chul discovered that Sung-Mi did not fulfill her end of the deal, he cut ties with her. However, the situation escalated to involve the police and prosecutors, causing irreversible trauma to the criminals who were treated like animals by Sung-Mi and Sung-Chul.

The involvement of the Rainbow Taxi Revenge Service team was uncovered, and Prosecutor Kang Hana, whose cases were entangled with the group's activities, is torn on the best course of action. As a champion of justice, she empathizes with Kim Do-Ki and his team's vision.

After 20 years of silence, Oh Chul-Young, the serial killer who murdered Jang Sung-Chul's parents, confessed to killing two more people. Shockingly, one of the victims was Kim Do-Ki's mother. This unexpected twist forced Do-Ki to relive painful memories while facing Oh Chul-Young. However, it also gave him the chance to find closure that he couldn't get when he believed the culprit dies by suicide.

Do-Ki sets out for personal revenge, which the Rainbow Taxi team declares as their final mission.

Episode 15 and 16 has a real life case behind it. It is the Raincoat Killer case.

Yoo Young-Chul is a South Korean serial killer, sex offender, and self-confessed cannibal. He admitted to the murders of multiple people, mostly prostitutes and wealthy old women. The Seoul Central District Court convicted him of 20 murders. One case was dismissed when it was identified as being committed by another serial killer, Jeong Nam-Gyu. Between September 2003 and July 2004, Yoo mutilated at least 11 victims and admitted to eating the livers of some. He also burned three victims. On July 15, 2004 he was apprehended. Yoo explained his motives in front of a TV camera, stating that "Women shouldn't be sluts, and the rich should know what they've done".

There was speculation that he modeled his killings after several movies, including "Public Enemy", "Very Bad Things", and "Normal Life", based on the content of his apartment searched after his arrest. Yoo later confessed to being inspired by serial killer Jeong Du-Yeong, who had murdered nine wealthy people in Busan from 1999 to 2000.

Prosecutors stated that Yoo killed wealthy older people due to his childhood poverty. They also stated that he targeted women with similar jobs as his previous lover in a bid to retaliate against a lover who betrayed him. Yoo also told police he killed women because he hated them.

The psychologist who assessed Yoo determined that he was not mentally ill. However, Yoo exhibited typical signs of anit-social disorder, which involves creating a belief system based on distrust of moral and social norms.

Yoo's case has fueled the debate on capital punishment in South Korea, and it has appalled many South Koreans. Although the death penalty is still legal, it has not been enforced since 1997. It seemed that capital punishment might be abolished before Yoo's arrest, but support for the death penalty has increased since learning of his crimes.

According to the Seoul Central District Court, "Murders of as many as 20 people are unprecedented in the nation and a very serious crirme. Due to the significant harm caused to the families and society, the death penalty is inevitable for Yoo who is currently detained at the Seoul Detention Center.

Netflix released a documentary series in 2021 titled "The Raincoat Killer: Chasing a Predator in Korea". The series explores the story of the notorious killer and the investigation that led to his capture.

Crisis looms without big cuts to over-tapped Colorado River (AP) Hydroelectric turbines may stop turning. Las Vegas and Phoenix may be forced to restrict water usage or growth. Farmers might cease growing some crops, leaving fields of lettuce and melons to turn to dust. Those are a few of the dire consequences that could result if states, cities and farms across the American West cannot agree on how to cut the amount of water they draw from the Colorado River. Yet for years, seven states that depend on the river have allowed more water to be taken from it than nature can replenish. Despite widespread recognition of the crisis, the states missed a deadline this week to propose major cuts that the federal government has said are necessary. The river, which cascades from the Rockies down to the deserts of the Southwest, quenches the thirst of 40 million people in the U.S. and Mexico and sustains a $15 billion-a-year agricultural industry. Lake Powell and Lake Mead, the two largest reservoirs that hold Colorado River water, have fallen to dangerously low levels faster than anyone expected. The decline threatens to disrupt hydroelectric power production and water sent to cities and farms.

The war’s effect on Greece (NYT) Once a sleepy outpost, the port of Alexandroupoli in northeastern Greece has taken on a central role in increasing the U.S. military presence in Eastern Europe. But the port’s transformation has angered not only Russia but also neighboring Turkey, underlining how the war is reshaping economic and diplomatic relationships in Europe. In the months before the war, the amount of matériel moved by Washington through the port jumped nearly 14-fold. Carlos is lucky because the property he rents has a well and his family can haul up buckets of water to sell to neighbors. “This is our gold,” he says of the well water. “If we are lucky, we can sell up to 12 buckets of water (per day) for $2,” said the 50-year-old father of three. That’s about enough money to buy the family’s food for the day, he said. Rising prices and a fast depreciating currency have pushed many Zimbabweans to the brink, reminding people of when the southern African country faced world-record inflation of 5 billion% in 2008. Intro to Echo in Time

Warning: This post is Big and Wordy, now with 75% more words.

Inspired by The Aldbergs by @cloudberry-sims, I'm trying out a Sims 3 twist on Morbid's Ultimate Decades Challenge. This starts in the 14th Century (anywhere, I assume, but I'm going with the white American default of medieval England) and progresses through time with a strict ratio of sim days to the year. Gameplay changes to fit historic events. The beginning is going to suck because life expectancy in the 1300s was ass, particularly infant mortality. And whoever survives will get to roll again to die in the Black Plague. This is a game where you need a hierarchy of heirs.

I hate telling stories where everything is bland and nobody faces any challenges. After 13 years, I have the mechanics of The Sims down, and I can mitigate almost anything the game throws at me. I have to make bad things happen on my own, and I'm terrible at that because I get too attached to my characters. So I shall hand over responsibility for tragedy to a very cruel 20-sided die and a whole bunch of probability calculations.

Modifications from Morbid's Challenge

Lifespan and Survival

I was compelled to do my own research in to medieval life expectancy, and my probabilities came out different from Morbid's. I also am going to trim the sim day to real year ratio to 3days/year instead of 4 days/year. That leaves me with:

1. Childbirth

Chance of mother's death in childbirth: 5% (1 in 20) Chance of newborn death: 20% (3 in 20)

2. Baby: 4 days to age 16 months, chance of death at age-up 25% (4 in 20)

3. Toddler: 14 days to age 6, chance of death at age-up 15% (5 in 20)

4. Child: 18 days to age 12, chance of death at age-up 10% (2 in 20)

5. Teen: 18 days to age 18, chance of death at age-up 10% (2 in 20)

6. YA: 36 days to age 30, chance of death at age-up 20% (4 in 20)

7. Adult: 45 days to age 45, death chance 20% (4 in 20)

8. Elder: 30 days to age 55, at which point death is handed off to the game's randomizer.

The reasoning here is that my research indicates that infant mortality was 48%, or roughly half. Of the people who survived to childhood, half of them made it to age 55. In my games, it's not uncommon for sims to live 10 days after their official end-of-lifespan, so I think that should get us a close enough simulation. I think we're unlikely to get the long-tail of people who lived to be really comparatively old like 75.

Also, I moved the Elder transition to age 45 because sims can have babies in their Adult stage, so it seemed reasonable to put the transition at menopause. This means that Elderhood starts in mid-life, and I AM AN Elder. I comfort myself that I’m using the Aging mod, and my Elders are not going to hunch over their canes immediately.

What's really disturbing is that those numbers are KINDER than Morbid's rolls. EEK. Also, Morbid’s lifespan is longer than mine, so it may even out a bit.

Racism

Look, I know that miscegenation was a big deal until close to modern days, but I just don't want to deal, ok? I don't want to screw with making all my sims white or creating castes of different skintones who are allowed to marry each other and are only allowed in certain careers. I can deal with 25% of my sims surviving to a really-young lifespan target. I'm using mechanics for sexism and heterosexism and economic castes. But encoding racism into my mechanics just makes me feel queasy. This is just going to be a multicolored version of medieval England. All simulations give something up.

Lifestyle

I'm a huge agriculture simulation nerd. (You should see me play Minecraft.) I've already looked up what foods were available in medieval England. I'm using Cooking Overhaul and Ani's Hunting Mod. Unfortunately, the only grain available in the game is corn, and I haven't found a mod that adds any other plantable grains. So we'll just pretend corn is oats or rye, and I can use Ani's food processor as a millstone to grind corn into flour.

I'm not sure how much of subsistence will be much of a story in between births and deaths, but I'll have plenty of fun playing it :).

Inheritance and Location

I was done with sticking to one lot in Sims challenges since back in the Pinstar days. I just don't know why the community got so attached to, "Buy a 64x64 lot and stay there for 10 generations," as the foundation for so many challenges. I've never been willing to stick to one lot or one world. I play my games too in-depth, and I suck at building.

More importantly, I've done enough of defining a family line by the last name. In Morbid's challenge, male inheritance means that the heir must be male and the girls will be married off with dowries. If the heir dies, a male cousin can inherit and so on. This all makes perfect sense. I just don't think I need to define the heir of my story as the literal heir of the household wealth. I intend to pick whatever surviving child I want. When that child is female, the story will move into a new active household when she marries. After over a decade of Samples and Wonderlands, I'm interested in telling stories about those who leave, not just those who stay behind.

Last but not least, meet Emmaline Weaver.

Since she's a woman, her surname won't last very long.

Her traits are random rolled to be: Coward, Hydrophobic, Proper, Gatherer, and Light Sleeper

Those traits naturally resolved into a backstory for me, and I've had a lot of fun with her so far.

I want you to know that this is the first game I've ever played where the Proper trait was so big a deal. That curtsy greeting is the CUTEST THING EVAR.

Lost Love

“I need her, Remus…” Sirius mumbled as he looked through the old photo albums in Grimmauld Place. Seeing your photos together from Hogwarts years were painful enough but the one album from your engagement was unbearable for him. He finished up his wine and stared at Remus with teary eyes. “Can we find her?”

“You know you cannot leave the house, Padfoot. But I will try my best, I will ask some people and we will see if someone knows anything about Y/N.” Remus patted his best friend’s shoulder reassuringly.

13 years ago from now on, everything was way different how it was now. Sirius and you, high school sweethearts have engaged and thrown a small party with close friends and family members. It was exactly how you have imagined it; coastal theme party by the beach in spring. The freshly bloomed flowers’ and the salty sea’s scents were mixed together and created the most peaceful vibe with the sounds of the waves and the happy songs of the birds.

After the engagement, the couple bought a small house in Cornwall by the sea and completed your small family with a Cocker Spaniel puppy. Everything was going so good for you two even a war was on its way. You have not joined the Order of the Phoenix due to your parents’ jobs in Ministry of Magic, you didn’t want to draw any more attention to them since this upcoming war was causing enough stress and danger for them. Sirius was on the other hand; he has joined the Order and fully working to save the wizarding world. James and Lily Potter has become the main targets of You-Know-Who after they had their baby boy Harry. This had a tool on both Sirius and you since they were your best friends and you two were Harry’s godparents, you must have saved them all from the war and You-Know-Who.

But things have gone downhill terribly on October 31. You and Sirius have attended a Halloween party and you were having fun, relieving stress. Sirius has left to renew your drinks while you were dancing with your friends but he has never came back. You have waited for 15 minutes but getting drinks shouldn’t have been that hard so you started to look around for him but he was nowhere to be seen. You were annoyed but decided to wait little bit more; maybe he felt sick and he was throwing up in the loo, you thought. It has been 20 more minutes and Sirius was still lost, you couldn’t believe the fact that he literally left you here without saying anything. You were extremely annoyed with him and excused yourself then went to your shared home, hoping he would be there. Even at home, there was no signs of Sirius. You had no idea what happened or if you accidently hurt him in some way but nothing came to your mind. You waited him until you have fallen asleep on the sofa by the fireplace. In the morning you woke up to loud knocks on your house’s door, you jumped up from where you were sleeping and ran to the door.

“Sirius!?” Your expression quickly changed when you noticed it wasn’t Sirius but 2 formal dressed men.

“Miss Y/L/N?” one of them asked.

You just nodded while an eerie feeling started to grow in you, you could tell something was wrong by their faces. Did something happen to Sirius? You thought to yourself but afraid to ask and hear their answer. But you didn’t have to wait for any longer because they started to talk after making sure they found the right person.

“We are sent by the Minister of Magic to inform you about Lily and James Potter’ and Peter Pettigrew’s murders.”

“What…?” This was the only word you could say, you felt a coldness run through your body. Before you could collect yourself from the information you just heard, the other man continued.

“Sirius Black is sent to Azkaban for murdering Peter Pettigrew and 12 muggles.”

You collapsed on the ground; you didn’t hear anything they said anymore. Everything was blurry, you thought you were having a nightmare but feeling of the cold wind and rain on your skin were real enough. You didn’t know how long you stayed on the ground or when the men left. The thoughts were running through your mind like crazy, you couldn’t think of a reason why Sirius would kill one of his best friends, Peter yet alone 12 muggles. Everything was normal yesterday, you have had a calm day then gone to the party that your friend threw to celebrate Halloween. Even in the party Sirius seemed normal until suddenly he got lost. You had no idea what has gotten into Sirius after that, how could Sirius kill someone; you couldn’t wrap your head around that at all.

It has been one week since you found about the incidents and it was the worst week of your whole life. You have given a decision; you gave Rocky, your dog to your parents and said your farewells to them before abandoning everything. You couldn’t live in your shared house anymore, every bit of it reminded you of Sirius, beside that the country started to suffocate you as well; everyday you were hearing or seeing news about your fiancé and people were talking shit about him nonstop. Even some people who knew your relationship with him were attacking you with their bloody words. You couldn’t take it anymore and moved to a small island in Turkey. You didn’t know anyone here, you didn’t know the language, it would be a total isolation for you and that was what you wanted and needed. After a while you got used to the country and started your own job there. You were a decent artist and you started to sell your artwork in the island, the tourists were very interested in them and you made enough money to live. You have bought a small cottage and a bird to company you, time has started to heal you slowly but steadily.

You were working on a sculpture while listening to slow music, this was your new hobby for a while now. Your peaceful night cut by a loud knock on your door, unexpected knocks became one of your phobias since the incident. Every time you felt the same cold feeling run through your body at the sound of it, you slowly stood up from your chair and walked to the door. It was almost midnight and you weren’t expecting anyone at all, also it was February so the island was nearly empty. You had no idea who this person could be and you must admitted to yourself, you were scared. You held your wand tightly behind you and crack opened the wooden door. It was dark outside and you couldn’t see the person’s face at all.

“Who is this?” you asked sternly.

“Y/N? Is that you…?” the man questioned softly.

Your eyes widened when you heard the voice, how could you forget your best friend’s voice even after all these years. “Remus!?”

You pushed the door open, and soon you and Remus were hugging longingly. You invited him in since it was cold outside, now you were sitting on the small sofa on your living room.

“How did you find me?” you were wondering that from the very beginning.

“Let’s say I have my sources.” Remus chuckled looking at you. “It has been a long time but you look great Y/N.”

“Thank you Moony, same goes for you too.”

“You are just being kind.” Remus smiled but his expression got serious in the next second. “Y/N, you should come back to London with me.”

“Di- did something happen to my parents…? Is this why you came here that late?”

“No no, it is not like that. But this is important too.”

“Remus can you please tell me what’s going on!?”

Remus sighed and looked into your eyes. “I cannot tell you, it might be dangerous but you must come. Even for a day, if you don’t want to stay you can come back here. But please, you will regret if you don’t come with me.”

You were confused, you had no idea about what’s going on and Remus wasn’t a good help neither. It has been 12 years and no one ever came to find you and now middle of the night Remus was here all of a sudden and wanted you to go back to London with him.

“I don’t know Remus, don’t you think this is a little bit weird?”

“It is, I am aware of that but try to understand me. I wouldn’t be coming all the way to Turkey middle of the night, if this is not very important. Please, I beg you Y/N.”

You thought for a while, Remus seemed genuine with his words even you still weren’t sure about the whole situation but you accepted it. After you said you accepted, Remus immediately walked you out to use the portkey. You didn’t have any time to get prepared; you were in your pyjamas at your home and seconds later you were in a dark corner in London with Remus. You shivered as the cold England weather hit you, Remus was walking you to a street soon you two were standing in front of the Grimmauld Place. You knew this house very well but you had no idea why Remus brought you here. Before you could ask anything, he rushed you to the house. You little bit relaxed at the warmness of the house but yet again you were pulled by the hand and Remus walked you to the living room.

“Here you go! I am leaving you alone, thank me later!” Remus grinned and walked out of the house.

You froze in your place when your eyes met with the curly haired man who was standing in the opposite side of the room. He wasn’t any different than you, he couldn’t move or couldn’t talk, just stayed there with teary eyes and looked at you. You weren’t sure if you were dreaming or this is really happening right now. You have thought you would never see Sirius ever again in your life but there he was or was he?

“Y/N, my love…” Sirius ran to you after his shock washed off. He pulled you in a tight hug when you started to sob uncontrollably. You held onto him so tightly that your knuckles turned into white. You and Sirius stayed like this for a while and cried your eyes out. Your whole body was shaking because of the extreme emotions you were going through right now, Sirius made you sit on the nearest sofa and sat beside you, still holding you tightly. Sometime later you felt little bit better and for the first time in 12 years you looked into his silver eyes. Now they had wrinkles around them and weren’t shining with the mischievousness as they did before but they still had the love in them that he held for you. You cupped his cheeks lovingly.

“Are you real? “ You whispered.

“I am very much real, darling. Want me to pinch you?” Sirius let out a chuckle, his thumb was drawing circles on your knee.

“Sirius...” You sighed his name before pressing your lips into his, he immediately returned the kiss. The kiss was full of little bit of everything; longing, love, excitement, lust…

You pulled away breathless, apparently you two needed some practice about it. The sheepish smile on your face made Sirius laugh as he pulled you into his embrace once more. You looked up at him grinning.

“Remember you owe me a drink, literally for 12 years. Now bring couple of wine bottles here, we have so many things to talk about my beloved fiancé!”

how old is ash on yours au’s?

It really really depends and I’m finding out that I’m absolutely horrible at actually giving out somewhat concrete ages, barring a few Au’s.

Unspokenly Ash is usually around late 20 to very early 22, unless I did write down and post an age for him in what ever Au has it, but thats also more drabble and fillet based. That is… basically my standard and I really need to vocalize that more from the content that I do write him as younger.

Basically how it goes is that with each region he ages up a year. Spending his birthday at home with his mom and the Oak’s that are present at the time before going off on another adventure. This gets kind of tricky around Sinnoh because Ash stay’s there to take on The Brain. I have that written down that it takes 3 month’s to even half a year. Which then put’s off the ‘sharing the birthday with mom and oak’ thing. This lands his birthday in the middle of his current journey at the time or a bit later like right before the league or a month before, if that makes sense. So in the end he comes home obviously older. Though I have been messing around and making the time in Orange Isles shorter to around 9 months instead of a full year.

Like here’s a time table and I’ll keep both set’s of ages if I do mess around with Orange Isles time line and add it as concrete. It gets really complicated so if you want a little more explanation please don’t be afraid to ask. I am also keeping the Brain Arc to half a year.

Starting age to finishing age *0/12 means how many months he is instead of a full year.

Kanto: 10 to 11

Orange Isles: 11 to 12 or 11 to 11 + 9/12

Johto: 12 to 13 or 11 + 9/12 to 12 + 9/12

Hoenn: 13 to 14 or 12 + 9/12 to 13 + 9/12

Sinnoh: 14 to 15 or 13 + 9/12 to 14 + 9/12

+ battling the Brain: 15 to 15 + 6/12 or 14 + 9/12 to 15 + 3/12

Unova: 15 + 6/12 to 16 + 6/12 or 15 + 3/12 to 16 + 3/12

Kalos: 16 + 6/12 to 17 + 6/12 or 16 + 3/12 to 17 + 3/12

Alola: 17 + 6/12 to 18 + 6/12 or 17 + 3/12 to 18 + 3/12

Galar: 18 + 6/12 to 19 + 6/12 or 18 + 3/12 to 19 + 3/12

I just want to say that typing all this out looks like one hell of a long ass math equation, kinda hate it and might change it later. But this is my completely basic format of what I use. Of course there’s a lot of wiggle room as I write Ash starting around 20 to 21 in Alola and Galar. He’s obviously going to probably spend more the one complete year in a region and less then another. The end of the league doesn’t dictate when he stays and leaves. Theres also the months that build up between each “arc”, another word I use to refer to his journeys, and to account the HC that some leagues start off at wildly different times then others.

It’s literally just a pick-and-pull basket and just a large general target where Ash would be ages wise. As you see in the end the two different age lists end up being only 3 months part from each other. It really doesn’t matter and I’m mostly just playing around with it. Another note thats… vital isn’t the correct word but I’m use it is that I don’t take Cerise Laboratory and the research assistant job into account. This is based off if Ash travels Galar to his normal standard with every other arc but Alola but I did keep the characters.

You didn’t ask for this but I want to add in other traveling buddies and side rivals ages and how they are compared to Ash as well. Usually Ash is the youngest if not one of them up until Hoenn. With the exception of being exactly 24 hours older then Ritchie. And all of this have way to much detail but its making my ADHD brain go brrrr happily.

He’s older than May, surprisingly, by like a month and a half but he doesn’t realize that and mentally clocks that he’s younger than her because of how responsible and adult like she acts a good chunk of the time. Max is obviously the youngest while Brock is the oldest. The same thing kinda happens in Sinnoh. He’s older then Dawn by a good year and a half to maybe even two years. Though Ash is younger then Paul and Barry by a varying few months between each boy.

Unova is where it changes a lot. Going from one of the youngest to one of the oldest out of his group of friends. Iris is drastically 3 years younger then Ash, making her around 12 at the start of the arc and somewhere around 13 at the end, and around 3 and a half with Cilan. This causes her to constantly pick against Ash because to her he’s older. Ash should be acting more like a seasonal trainer with known responsibilities and shouldn’t be so excited about everything. That’s also an expectation that was subconsciously taught to her by Drayden when she was still in School in the Dragon Village. Virgil is actually the oldest being freshly turned 18 years old while Cameron is the youngest at 11 and 5 months. Stephan is like the closest to Ash’s actually age but also acts a lot more older and more adult like then he really is just by his laid back attitude. Bianca actually just turned 18 before starting her journey.

Age Note: the reason why Cilan is weird and awkward around Burgundy is not because of her short temper and brash attitude but because Burgundy just turned 13 years old. She is a legitimate child just like Iris, compared to Cilan’s 16 years and 6 months when the meet on the road for the first time and not at a connoisseur event. Her deep infatuation and how young she is really puts Cilan in a active land mine field. Unlike Iris who listens to him and actually talks, he has no clue how to interact with her. Burgundy isn’t a normal gym challenger coming to his and his brother gym for a badge or even a normal crazed simple fan. As a gentleman at heart as well he raised to talk between certain age limits close to his own and this ends up making Cilan see Burgundy actually younger then she really is. Kind of like how Iris clocked Ash as a ‘kid’ when he’s obviously older then her and more experienced.

Kalos then thrusts Ash or being the oldest out of the main group but not as a whole. Bonnies around 8 while Clemont is 2 months and a half younger then Ash. This is where I struggle a lot in placing peoples based age in Kalos is actually because of Serena. I don’t want to make her too young to which the point it’s weird and also I based the other contest girls age’s around hers. But I also don’t want to make her too old to the point that Miette, the oldest out of the contest girls no matter what, is older then Ash. The general consensus is that Miette is right in with Clemont and Ash age wise while Nini is the youngest out of the trio. So that places Serena around 13 to 14 while Nini is like 12 and 7 months. Sawyer is obviously just turned 10 while Trevor, Tierno, and Shauna are between 12 and a half to 13 and a half years old. Giving that easy bonding connection with Serena and Shauna while giving Miette a older more experienced vibe and the childlike wonder to Nini. You’d think with Alain and all Ash would be the second oldest but your wrong. Ash is exactly 1 whole week older then Alain but, much like May, he doesn’t know that and mentally clocks Alain older then he really is.

In comes Alola and this is again where I usually bump Ash up to 20 to 21 but for the sake of everything I’m going off the basic target. Ash is obviously the oldest of the class by a good year on them alone though the classes collective smarts pushed them up different grades in school so thats how their together. Kiawe was the oldest at 16 and 9 months while Sophocles is still the youngest at 12 and 3 months, again bringing in the fact that the class is super smart and its based off intelligence instead of age like with every other class. Mallow is the third oldest at 16 and 2 months with Lana following on by at 16 and 1 month. Lillie is specifically around 15 years to 13 years and 4 months based off if I want her to suffer more as a older teen or as a child, literally her age is based off if I want to traumatize her more or not. Hapu is around 12 to 13 years old despite her obvious size and squeaky-ish voice. Acerola despite being very very mature for her age is only 17 years and 4 months old. Horacio is about Ash’s age at an even 17 years old when he and his lackies first meet Ash, Sophocles, and Kiawe.

Age Note: Horacio absolutely used his age as a card against Sophocles as many times as he could to the point it was so overused. This made Ash especially angry because he hated it when people used their age against much younger kids. Just because you’re older doesn’t mean you’re right.

Then we reach Galar as our final stop. Ash is once more the oldest out of him, Chloe, and Goh but not everyone else. That would be Hodge at a straight 19 years old when he first meets Ash and Goh at the Battle Frontier Flute Cup. Chloe comes at 14 and a half years old with Goh just freshly turning 14. This makes Ash’s relationship more of a mentor type distant older brother thing. Those two actually don’t find out about Ash’s age up until he and Goh get their letter so of recommendation and have to fill out the normal personal stuff. If you think Hop is close by in age with Ash then you’re wrong again. He’s actually two days younger then Chloe making Hop around 14 and a half years old as well. Marine is 13 years and 9 months old. Bede is much more closer to Ash then the others at 16 years 8 months. For Leon, Raihan, and Sonia their still very much the same in a way. Leon is still the youngest at 20 years while Raihan is the oldest at 23, leaving Sonia in the middle at 21 and a half years old.

Age note… once more: this fits perfectly for the Kanto and Galar Trios as they basically get opposite of themselves in a way. Goh who’s very oriented, loud, and on the go gets paired with marine who’s very quite and shy for the most part and their going to subconsciously teach each other that its okay to come out of your shell or its okay to take a moment and relax. Hop is very much like Ash and Goh combined with the strategies and the none stop puppy own straight crack like energy and he declares himself as Chloe’s, who’s silent and very critical and almost broody like it’s not quite there but it’s close enough, rival and is trying to teach her that battling is fun and okay and a lot of Pokemon like battling for those reason. Ash and Bede are the obvious choice for each other because once again Ash is very bright, happy-go-lucky, just sweet in general to everyone while Bede is completely broody, extremely sour, and just utterly rolling in his own image and being way to cocky.

all these acts of violence epilogue: stranger things s3 fic exploring an alternative scenario where mike and not el is the one to get bitten by the mindflayer, and the ripple effect that has on the finale. not to toot my own horn but i am really proud of this fic! and i am working on the last chapter! i promise! endings are just hard to write thats all!

wavelength: also known as the [redacted] au, this originally started as a 'for-want-of-a-nail' stranger things s1 fic but soon started to spin wildly out of control because i have no patience to rewrite everything as was in canon and am now running wild trying to think of new and interesting ways to subvert the story

alebrijes: also known as That One Story From Childhood That Everyone's Trying To Bring To Life. takes place in a fictional country full of myths and magic (inspired by mexican culture eyyy), where a girl who goes on a quest to find her missing father finds out about a sinister plot targeting the magic and magical creatures of the land, and discovers that her family may be more tied to this plot than she realizes. this is meant to be a long-running comic that im hoping to (fingers crossed) f i n a l l y start on this year but i still have a lot of outlining and tweaking to do for the story

boundaries: an original story that rn consists mostly of vague ideas and LOTS of nonsensical sketches. takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where society is starting to recover from total environmental collapse, but class divide means that life outside of the prospering cities is full of hardship and a mishmash of cyberpunk tech advances cobbled together from the remains of the society of before. featuring pretty overgrown ruins full of body-horror monsters! hoverboard technology and holograms! motorcycles and punk scavengers and a soundtrack of rock music and what not! imma be honest not sure what sort of medium to make with this? maybe a faux video game trailer or something

*insert placeholder fic name no. ???*: short coming-of-age story about a soon-to-be-15-year-old teenage girl in mexico city trying to cope with the expectations society has about her womanhood, and the new all-female werewolf pack she accidentally finds herself running with in the urban metropolis

Why Rating Your Work Matters

In my many years of lurking around or actively being part of fandoms, I've seen a lot of fanfic authors ignore ratings. But they shouldn’t. Ratings are fundamental tools in many forms of fictional and entertainment pieces, whether its creator do it professionally or not. Which is why I don’t understand the hesitation to use it. But instead of trying to understand why, I’ll give you reasons to use it and how you can do it properly.

It can be hard to know how to rate your work. Unless you started writing fics in a website which includes ratings as a requirement to post fics, most likely new fanfic authors have no idea why they should add ratings. Which it is alright, I’ve been there. And I’m sure very few people will judge you for not knowing.

In my personal experience, I thought it was easy to rate fics. Because we see ratings all the time on movies, series, music and games, I believed it wasn’t that hard. But once I started writing, I found so many forms of rating systems (from Motion Picture Association of America’s Rating Board to citrus scale). Aside from that, the country I live has its own rating system, whic is so different from what I see in movies, games and fanworks. So I know it can be confusing. Yet, my mission is to uncomplicate things and help. So, let’s start.

Ratings exist to tell the reader who’s the author’s target audience. It isn’t as specific as a warning, but it gives them an idea of the subjects they might find in it. To have a better notion of how it works, let’s consider some rating components specified by Motion Picture Association: language, violence, drugs and sex.

General (G, K, K+ | age 9 and below) is a rating suitable for most people, including children. Fanfics rated as general are usually fluff and they lack mentions of sex or substance abuse. Violence and language are rarely seen. They can be vaguely mentioned, but never described with details (a fade to black scene before an act of violence happens or characters saying shoot instead of shit). I’ve seen writers say mild language can be included and avoid angst. But that’s up to each author.

Teen (T, PG, orange | age: 13 to 15) is a rating used to content suitable for audience over thirteen years old. Readers may find curse words, but sex, drugs and violence are still just mentioned or briefly described. Kids from age 10 to 12 aren’t included here is because they’re in a gray area where certain topics rated teen will be okay for them, but most of time, they’re still part of general audiences.

Mature (M, R, lime | age: 16+) is used for works unsuitable for minor audiences. Readers should expect some description of violence, sex, curse words and substance abuse, but not in so many details. Though these mature and explicit ratings are quite similar, the first is more focused on scenes involving complex emotional issues like mental illnesses, consequences of violence in its many forms and grief. Given that these themes can be upsetting, fanworks with this rating often come with specific warnings for triggering subjects.

Explicit (NC-17, E, MA, lemon | age: 18+) is also unsuitable for minor audiences. But unlike mature, fanworks with this rating usually contain extreme violence, substance abuse and graphic description of sex. Some works might need specific warnings for triggering subjects.

If you consider those main topics and the level of details you used to describe them, you’ll be able to see your target audience and choose the appropriate rating to your fanwork. This is a crucial item to promote your fanfic. It shows that you know and care about the person who will read your fic because putting that rating there says “hey, this is for you!” or “nope! Try again in a few years”.

But in case you still wondering why it’s so important if you’re already using warnings, here’s something you should know: warnings are only necessary for works that have potentially disturbing content. Language, light to moderate alcohol consumption, betrayal, fanfiction genres, sexual innuendos and common sexual activities aren’t triggering subjects for most people. Therefore, you don’t need to add warnings all the time. E.g. if your fic is rated as mature or explicit, you don’t need to add warning for language because your readers will expect curse words in it.

When rating a work, keep in mind that explicit doesn’t mean dark. You can write fluff in a fanfiction rated as explicit (I do it all the time). Higher ratings don’t demand warnings every single time. What you have to do is to know clearly the story you’re writing to be sure your readers will only be caught by surprise with plot twists, not because you failed to let them know what they can expect of your work.

theres this one girl on tiktok that i followed because shes an 18+ account that doesnt exclusively post porn thats under fire lately for her stance on age-up and adult au fanfiction. i unfollowed her because the discourse is stressful for me and she posts bdsm bnha headcanons that are just not my thing. but im really frustrated by the narrative that if youre aging up a minor it must be because youre attracted to them, when that is just factually untrue?

the reason (i assume) that the majority of adults write mature, aged-up fic is because we want to write about the characters that we love in situations that are relatable to us. when bnha began serialization in 2014 i was 12 years old, when the anime started i was 14. im 20 now, but class 1a has stayed 15. if they were an old friend, theyd have grown up with me, but theyre fictional, so if i want to have content thats relatable to me of them being my age or older, i have to write it myself, because i don't expect that kind of thing from the canon narrative. "i may be grown, but theyre coming with me" is a really common sentiment in the adult side of fandom. a rebuttal that alot of people have is "there are other characters that are closer to your age" but those characters, while cool, arent the ones ive grown attached to over the years. ask yourself, would you really leave a comfort characters behind in that circumstance? in addition, writing fic for other characters is a completely different experience because their personalities and dynamic are astronomically different. if you read a dabihawks and a tododeku fic with the names swaped, would you be able to tell the difference? if your answer is anything other than yes, our experience reading fic is too radically different for anything i have to say to impact you.

i would like to remind alot of minors participating in fandom that they are not the target audience of e rated fic anyway? of course, due to the nature of the internet, most fanfic authors are aware a minor may read their fic, but when you have to confirm youre 13+ to gain an ao3 account, confirm youre 18+ to click into an e rated fic and you even have to read the tags to see if said fic interests you, a minor being where there not supposed to is less our problem and more the problem of the parent or gaurdian of the minor.

im also really uncomfortable with the apparent development that if youre uncomfortable with something it must be moraly reprehensible in some way? i want to assure you that its okay to dislike things like age-ups and a/b/o or mpreg without having a concrete reason. squicks are a thing that have existed for a long long time..

im tired and i wasnt trying to make this a coherent blog post anyway, but tl:dr stop assuming people who have different tastes than you are pedos and start protecting yourselves from actual online predators by taking internet safety precautions 👍🏽
