Goal: Be normal
Obstacle: Watching literally any interpretation of Treasure Island, apparently
#Why's it Stevenson again. What has he done for me lately (Jekyll and Hyde)#That was like the one book that I just straight up refused to read in school and it's back to haunt me#And honestly I'd be fine if it was just one thing! But no it's a weird fucked up web of loving stuff!#'Cause first of all it's RLS as previously states - Jekyll and Hyde author (love) which just puts me in a clone/doppleganger state of mind#Okay fine I'm already there you got me#But then you've got me in a pirates mood which my brain Is Still After All This Time in love (love!) with the Pirate Fic#And it super doesn't help that Treasure Planet is also sci-fi as if I wasn't aliens enough lol#But like the relationship between Silver and Hawkins and growing into your own person and just jfskalfsdf#Stop being good! Stop it! You're giving me Feelings and Feelings spawn Ideas and I Am Trying To Edit!!#I am backlogged to fuck btw I am suffering :'D I legit might have to pump the breaks I have so much to edit#We're talking in the hundreds - meanwhile my brain is trying to point me back to the Pirate Fic because look ♥ Authors (love) Stories (love)#Stop your nonsense! I'm trying to focus!#Doesn't help that I haven't drawn for a couple days either so The Energy is building meanwhile I'm trying to wall up against the flood#Stop making! The two halves are out of whack! I'm making way way Way more than I can keep up with!#Editing has gotten boring as well which is :/ It did used to be relaxing but I'm just so impatient now#I want to draw! But then I also want to show off what I've drawn! But I want it to be pretty!#I need to tear through this notebook - drawing brain likes this idea and editing brain hates it - 'cause the paper is subpar :/#Dark lines with a grain that catches graphite not fun to work with - fine to draw on but a pain to edit#Anyway lol ♪ Back to what I was doing before#Update: WAIT I forgot the Feelings I had about Arrow fjdslakfdjf#The dynamics are non-specific and apply all the way around because I say so

You don’t have to pay for that fancy worldbuilding program
As mentioned in this post about writing with executive dysfunction, if one of your reasons to keep procrastinating on starting your book is not being able to afford something like World Anvil or Campfire, I’m here to tell you those programs are a luxury, not a necessity: Enter Google Suite (not sponsored but gosh I wish).
MS Office offers more processing power and more fine-tuning, but Office is expensive and only autosaves to OneDrive, and I have a perfectly healthy grudge against OneDrive for failing to sync and losing 19k words of a WIP that I never got back.
Google’s sync has never failed me, and the Google apps (at least for iPhone) aren’t nearly as buggy and clunky as Microsoft’s. So today I’m outlining the system I used for my upcoming fantasy novel with all the helpful pictures and diagrams. Maybe this won’t work for you, maybe you have something else, and that’s okay! I refuse to pay for what I can get legally for free and sometimes Google’s simplicity is to its benefit.
The biggest downside is that you have to manually input and update your data, but as someone who loves organizing and made all these willingly and for fun, I don’t mind.
So. Let’s start with Google Sheets.
The Character Cheat Sheet:
Tumblr media
I organized it this way for several reasons:
I can easily see which characters belong to which factions and how many I have named and have to keep up with for each faction
All names are in alphabetical order so when I have to come up with a new name, I can look at my list and pick a letter or a string of sounds I haven’t used as often (and then ignore it and start 8 names with A).
The strikethrough feature lets me keep track of which characters I kill off (yes, I changed it, so this remains spoiler-free)
It’s an easy place to go instead of scrolling up and down an entire manuscript for names I’ve forgotten, with every named character, however minor their role, all in one spot
Also on this page are spare names I’ll see randomly in other media (commercials, movie end credits, etc) and can add easily from my phone before I forget
Also on this page are my summary, my elevator pitch, and important character beats I could otherwise easily mess up, it helps stay consistent
*I also have on here not pictured an age timeline for all my vampires so I keep track of who’s older than who and how well I’ve staggered their ages relative to important events, but it’s made in Photoshop and too much of a pain to censor and add here
On other tabs, I keep track of location names, deities, made-up vocabulary and definitions, and my chapter word count.
The Word Count Guide:
Tumblr media
*3/30 Edit to update this chart to its full glory. Column 3 is a cumulative count. Most of what I write breaks 100k and it's fun watching the word count rise until it boils over.
This is the most frustrating to update manually, especially if you don’t have separate docs for each chapter, but it really helps me stay consistent with chapter lengths and the formula for calculating the average and rising totals is super basic.
Not that all your chapters have to be uniform, but if you care about that, this little chart is a fantastic visualizer.
If you have multiple narrators, and this book does, you can also keep track of how many POVs each narrator has, and how spread out they are. I didn’t do that for this book since it’s not an ensemble team and matters less, but I did for my sci-fi WIP, pictured below.
Tumblr media
As I was writing that one, I had “scripted” the chapters before going back and writing out all the glorious narrative, and updated the symbols from “scripted” to “finished” accordingly.
I also have a pie chart that I had to make manually on a convoluted iPhone app to color coordinate specifically the way I wanted to easily tell who narrates the most out of the cast, and who needs more representation.
Google Docs
Can’t show you much here unfortunately but I’d like to take an aside to talk about my “scene bits” docs.
It’s what it says on the tin, an entire doc all labeled with different heading styles with blurbs for each scene I want to include at some point in the book so I can hop around easily. Whether they make it into the manuscript or not, all practice is good practice and I like to keep old ideas because they might be useful in unsuspecting ways later.
Separate from that, I keep most of my deleted scenes and scene chunks for, again, possible use later in a “deleted scenes” doc, all labeled accordingly.
When I designed my alien language for the sci-fi series, I created a Word doc dictionary and my own "translation" matrix, for easy look-up or word generation whenever I needed it (do y'all want a breakdown for creating foreign languages? It's so fun).
Normally, as with my sci-fi series, I have an entire doc filled with character sheets and important details, I just… didn’t do that for this book. But the point is—you can still make those for free on any word processing software, you don’t need fancy gadgets.
I hope this helps anyone struggling! It doesn’t have to be fancy. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Everything I made here, minus the aforementioned timeline and pie chart, was done with basic excel skills and the paint bucket tool. I imagine this can be applicable to games, comics, what have you, it knows no bounds!
Now you have one less excuse to sit down and start writing.

New Friend | Luke Hughes
Tumblr media
• ──────────────♡────────────── •
genre: fluff (?)
word count: 1.3k
warnings: none
notes: first time writing on this account. will probably end up taking this down or heavily editing as my writing progresses because I'm not sure if I like this one. we'll see 🤷🏽‍♀️.
update: link to part 2 here
• ──────────────♡────────────── •
The smell of sweat, alcohol, and cigarette smoke overwhelms my senses as I sit at a booth in the corner of an overcrowded bar that my two best friends have dragged me to in Newark. Nausea swirls in my stomach at the sight of all the intoxicated bodies dancing and stumbling around me. After accompanying them to an intense hockey game between the New Jersey Devils and Chicago Blackhawks, ending with a 4-2 win for the Devils, they had decided that the success of their favorite team called for a celebration.
Not much of a party person, I decide to hang back at a table and keep watch of their belongings while they leave to go dance the night away amongst the other drunk people who litter the bar. To ease the anxious feeling in my chest, I pull my phone from my crossbody bag and open up my Kindle app. I choose the book I have recently been invested in, and I quickly become immersed in it. I'm not sure how much time passes by but I'm just reaching a really intense part in the storyline when a male voice grabs my attention.
"Do you mind if I sit here?"
Lifting my gaze from my phone screen, I meet with the gaze of a very handsome stranger. Shyness begins to take over as I realize that he's talking to me. My words leave me as I continue to stare at the guy in front of me. My lack of response must come off as apprehension because he quickly begins to apologize.
"Sorry if I scared you." He starts. "The bar is pretty packed and all of the tables are full. My friends ditched me to join the crowd and I'm not really a fan of these types of outings."
"It's fine," I reply as words finally find their way into my brain and out of my mouth. "I don't mind." I gesture to the empty seat at the other side of the booth.
"Cool." He nods, sitting down. "I'm Luke, by the way."
"Y/n." I respond. "Nice to meet you."
"I like your jersey." He refers to the Devil's apparel that I'm still wearing from the game I'd attended earlier in the night.
"Uh, thanks." A blush rises to my cheeks at the unexpected compliment. "It was the first jersey I saw in my size at the fan shop so I bought it."
"I'm assuming you're not a Devil's fan, then."
"Not really." I shrug. "My friends are though. I don't know much about hockey, but they love it. They convinced me to go watch the game with them tonight hence why I bought the jersey. What about you?"
"Kinda have to be considering I play for the team." He responds nonchalantly. His words leave me a little stunned and a lot confused.
"I can't tell if you're lying or not."
"I'm serious." He chuckles. "In fact, that's my last name and number you're wearing right now. Look me up if you don't believe me. Luke Hughes, number 43, of the New Jersey Devils. I won't be offended."
I do just that after picking up my phone from the table from where I had previously abandoned it after he made his appearance. Looking through the Google results, I realize that everything he just said is true.
"Okay, so you are telling the truth. But why would you just openly admit that to me? Aren't you worried that I might run off and tell everyone in the bar that I'm talking to The Luke Hughes? Or post it on the internet or something?"
"No." He shakes his head. "Call me naive, but I don't think that's the type of person you are."
"What makes you so sure?"
"Instinct or whatever you call it." He shrugs, a goofy grin on his face.
"What's it like, being on the ice? It seemed intense, and I was only watching it. I can't even begin to imagine what it must feel like to play."
"It is intense, but I love it." He replies honestly. "I always have."
We continue to talk back and forth for what seems like forever. Taking turns to ask each other questions and sharing random stories that have us laughing, almost to the point of tears. At one point during the conversation, he moves to sit on my side of the booth so he can show me a video of his brother falling off of a board while wake-surfing at their lake house in Michigan. He's in the middle of telling the story of the time he almost had to go streaking across his college campus when he's interrupted by a noticeably drunk man, a few others following behind him as he approaches the table.
"Lukey!" He exclaims loudly, making me laugh as he wraps an arm around the shoulders of a flustered Luke. "We've been looking everywhere for you."
"Who's your friend?" Another man questions as they file into the booth seat. The one embracing look shoves us over to sit on our side.
"I'm Y/n." I introduce myself.
"Nico." He greets me before pointing to the other men at the table. "That's Dawson, John, and-"
"And I'm Jack." The loud one from before interrupts. "I'm Lukey Pookies older brother." He lifts a hand and teasingly pinches Lukes cheek.
"My very drunk older brother." Luke huffs in annoyance and swats Jack's hand away.
"Nice to meet you." I giggle as the brothers begin to bicker.
As casual conversation begins amongst the group that has formed at the table, Luke scoots closer to where our shoulders and thighs lightly brush against each other with every slight movement and he leans in to whisper in my ear.
"Sorry about them." He smiles sheepishly when I turn towards him.
"Don't worry about it." I assure him. "They seem fun." He nods before turning to join the conversation.
It's nearing two in the morning when Nico, who seems to be the only sober one in the group aside from Luke, announces that it's time for them to head home. There are a few groans of disappointment, which Nico ignores as he begins to pull them from their seats. After they say their goodbyes and begin to walk away, Luke turns towards me.
"I know this is probably weird, and feel free to say no, but I was wondering if I could get your number." He questions, shyness washing over him. "This is the first time in what feels like a long time that I've been able to have a conversation with anyone, let alone a girl, whose intentions aren't to take advantage of my fame or status to influence their own. I would really like to get to know you more. As a friend, of course."
"Of course. I'm always down to make a new friend." I smile, a fluttering sensation forming in my chest as I take his phone and add my contact. A few seconds after handing it back, my own phone buzzes.
"I just texted you so now you have mine. I have to go but text me when you get home, so I know you made it safely."
He seems to hesitate for a few seconds, as if trying to make up his mind about something, before he leans in a brushes his lips softly against my cheek. When his face is visible again, he is sporting a bright red blush, mine surely looking the same if the warmth in my cheeks says anything. He says goodbye quickly before turning to run after his friends who are whooping and hollering, having seen the whole thing. I smile to myself as I gather mine and my friends, a giddy feeling running through every fiber of my being. I make it only a few feet from the table when I almost run into my friends, both standing in front of me, with shocked expressions on their faces.
"Tell us everything!" They exclaim as they each grab one of my arms and begin to pull me out of the bar.

Summary: Reader accepts Zach's invitation about coming onto the podcast, despite going through a hard time.
Warnings: there won't be smut in this (I can always do a part 2), but there will sexual innuendos and other things that make it feel like it belongs in this book, kinda sad beginning, swearing, joking around, reader is good friends with Zach and Jared, reader feeling sad/down, long distance relationship? possible angst?
I will be using some actual dialogue from their videos, but most of it will be from me.

╔═══━━━─── • ───━━━═══╗
It's been a few weeks since you and Sam sat down and had a long discussion about your relationship.
You both agreed that it was best you "cut things off'' until things start to settle down - but you both didn't know when that was going to happen.
No matter how hard you tried, your schedules were always packed. You were flying to one state on the other side of the county.
Sam was flying to the opposite.
It didn't really make sense, because things really didn't change romantically, you still said I love you. You still FaceTimed when you could.
It's just, everything was always over the phone.
Through texts, phone calls, pictures.
You haven't seen each other since the night Sam left with Colby to do their overseas haunted tour thing that they've been planning for months.
That was three weeks ago, and it's killing you - both.
You both agreed that you need to give both of your lives all you got, and that's where it made sense. Putting your careers first, getting ahead so you have time to plan out the future together.
You hated it. Absolutely despised it, but you truly believed that if your love was real, and you truly believed it was..
It will always contain the habit of coming back.
Tumblr media
You hugged Sam tight, not wanting to let him go. His arms stayed around you, chin rested on your head as he basked in the last moments you had together before he had to fly to Romania.
Then to Spain.
Then Ireland.
It was going to be non stop.
"Hey." Sam whispers, "I love you." You sniffle, mumbling into his chest, "I love you." He slides an arm over your shoulder, tilting your tear soaked face up to look at him.
He smiles slightly, biting his lip to hold back his own tears, "I don't care how complicated things gets. I still want you."
You nod, "Always your girl."
He kisses your forehead, "Always my girl."
You can tell he nods, meaning Colby has signaled him, and you let out a sigh, "Let me know when you land."
"You know I'll update you any chance I get." He pulls you into a hug, squeezing tight, "I love you. I love you so much."
You try your hardest not to cry, but you can't help it and sob into his chest, "I love you."
He cups your cheek, kissing you deeply before leaning back, "I don't want to, but I gotta go."
"Go." You smile, "But don't have too much fun." You laugh slightly before it quickly turns into crying again and you fight it, "I'm sorry."
He shakes his head, "Never be sorry." He kisses you one last time, "Wait for me."
You nod, turning around to see Colby standing behind you, "Safe travels." You reach up, wrapping your arms around Colby's neck and he hugs you tight, "It'll be okay."
You nod, leaning back, "I know." You wipe your face, watching as Sam and Colby walk towards the gate.
Sam smiles slightly, giving you one last wave before he walks through.
Once he's out of your sight, you cover your face, absolutely breaking down and you didn't care that it was in the middle of the airport.
Your friend walks up, wrapping her arms around you, "You guys are inevitable."
Tumblr media
"I have to go in like ten minutes, we're getting ready to head to our next place." Sam says from the other end of the phone.
You pout totally forgetting about the time difference, "Okay."
"Hey " Sam tilts his head, "Don't do that."
"I'm not doing anything. I've mastered waiting until we hang up." You laugh and he sighs, "Girl. You're going to kill me."
"If I was going to do that, I would have done it before you left."
You've been coping with jokes and humor. You were still absolutely dying inside with not being able to lay with him. Kiss him. Hug him.
It was still eating away at you, but, as said, you've just mastered it with humor.
"Part of me wishes you did." Sam mumbles with a laugh, "This is hell."
You sigh quietly, sitting up as you rest your chin in the palm of your hand, "I know." You smile as you think about what your friend said, "But just remember that we're inevitable."
"Damn right." Sam smiles and you hear Colby yell at him, "Alright, enough with the phone sex. The car's here."
You laugh as you watch Sam's mouth drop and he pans his phone over his fully clothed in layers body, "Does it look like I have my d-"
"I don't need to know what nasty shit you guys are in to." Colby laughs and you sigh, "Alright. I love you."
You see the phone get ripped out of Sam's hand and Colby's face appears suuuper close to the camera, "I love you, too."
You shake your head, laughing, "oh my god."
Sam gets his phone back and he smiles, "Talk later?"
You nod, "You know it. Be safe. Good luck!"
Sam smiles, "Yes ma'am." He salutes you, "Alright, I love you." You smile, "I love you."
The call ends and you feel that sudden rush of, once gated, emotions hit you all at once. You fall into the bed, specifically on Sam's side and take a deep shaky breath, "Fuck."
You lay a pillow over your face and lay there for a second, taking yourself down from crying.
Your phone dings and you hesitate for a second before you toss the pillow next to you and search for your phone.
A laugh leaves your lips as you see a message from your friend, Zach Justice, Hey sweet cheeks. Come on the podcast.
You click on it, typing out, oh now you want me to come on?
You take a screenshot and send it to Sam. You stare up at the ceiling as you wait for a response from either one, trying to convince yourself that what you're going through, is going to benefit your future with Sam.
Together.
You bring your phone up, rolling your eyes at Zach's response, Not so much me, but the people in the comments. Your name is infesting every video I post.
Infesting? That's a.. weird way of putting it lol. I'll see if I can squeeze you in to fit in my busy, busy schedule.
Your friendship with Zach has always been playful banter, ever since you met, but he's always there for you.
You haven't said anything to him, or Jared, about your current situation with Sam, but you know that just going on the podcast would definitely help you get through this easier.
You bring your phone back up and laugh as what Zach had to say, So kind of you to consider hanging out with me.
You laugh, I know, I can be sooo nice. I'll come if you buy me a plane ticket.
And pick me up from the airport, with donuts.
You see the message change from delivered to read and his face pops up on your screen. You take a deep breath and hit answer, "You couldn't have just texted me?"
"Donuts you say? You must be really going through it."
You laugh, "You have no idea."
"Does this have anything to do with Sam?" He raises his brows when you don't answer him and he hums, "Thought so."
"We're.. together but we're not together? If that makes any kind of sense. I don't know. We both agreed that our schedules are too much for us to be labeled as a couple right now, so we just, agreed to put more focus on the business of our lives?" You shake your head, "I'm just.. feeling a lot."
"Yeah, you're totally coming on the podcast." He laughs, "I'll get your plane ticket." You can tell he's focused on something else and you laugh, "I was joking. I can get my-"
"Done."
"Zach." You laugh, "I don't even know when I'm free."
"Well, you better be free next Thursday." He smiles, giving you a wink, "See you then."
"Don't.. wink at me. That's weird."
"Ugh" he groans dramatically, "Sorry." He smiles, "See you next Thursday, I'll send you the deats." He winks and hangs up before you can yell at him again.
You see a message from Sam and your attention shifts as you read what he says, You should definitely do it, babe. I think it would be good for you.
You tap the screen, Zach really didn't give me a choice. He bought my plan ticket for me already so now I have to move stuff around, but I agree.
Your eyes move up to the time, groaning lowly as you realize just how late it is. You remembered you have a meeting for a brand deal within the next four hours, so you reach over, turning off your lights so you can try and get at least a little bit of sleep.
Tumblr media
Why'd he have to get such an early flight, you think as you zip your suitcase closed. You lift it off the bed and set it upright on the floor before replacing the spot on the bed with your body.
The last two days, Sam and Colby have been camping in a place they don't have service, so you haven't talked to him.
Your phone dings and you lift in hopes that it's Sam, but it's Zach, On your way to the airport?
You laugh quietly, You act like you're exited to see me or something, but soon. Waiting on my friend to get here to take me.
Your friend texts you, letting you know that she's there and you get a move on, pulling the handle from your case and wheeling it behind you as you walk out to the living room.
She comes in, "You ready?"
You look over at her, "Yeah I just have to grab my headphones, they've been charging." She nods, "You doing okay?"
You shrug, "I mean, yeah. For the most part." You laugh slightly, "As good as I can be."
"Where did he say they were camping again?" She crosses her arms and you look at her, "Some.. demonic forest? I have no idea. If I don't hear from him by tomorrow I'm sending a search and rescue team."
She laughs, "No I don't blame you." She walks over, grabbing the handle of your bag as you stuff your headphones into your carry on, "I know how Zach is, and he's a jokester.. are you going to be alright?"
You nod, "I talked to Zach about everything last week, I told him that joking is my way to cope, so I gave him the green light."
"I can't wait for this to come out. I just know it's going to be better than the others." She laughs and you nod, "Oh you know it."
.·:*¨ ✘ ¨*:·.
Walking into the airport was almost like you were reliving that day with Sam all over again. Luckily, you had to go to a different gate in a different part of the building, which really made it a lot easier in the long run.
"Well. I'll see ya in a day or two." You lean in, hugging your friend, "Thank you."
She squeezes you, "Don't need to thank me. Have a good flight."
You nod, "I'll try. I'll text you when I land."
You turn, walking up to the lady to hand her your ticket. She smiles, "Hi, y/n. I have to tell you, my daughter is a huge fan of yours."
"Awe." You smile, "You'll have to tell her I said thank you.
The lady nods, "I will." She smiles, "Safe travels, y/n."
You smile and walk in, turning back to wave to your friend before boarding the plane.
You sit down in your seat, checking your phone to see if Sam texted - but no message. You sigh, unfolding your headphones and slipping them over your ears.
You've been on enough planes to know the routine.
After pressing play for your music to play, you send a quick text to Zach, letting him know that you boarded and should be there in about two to three hours.
Your flight feels longer than it should be. It felt like time was dragging by as slow as it could possibly go.
But once you land and are able to exit, you practically bolt to the baggage claim.
I got my bags, where are you?
You look around, waiting to either see Zach or hear back from him.
Moments later, he texts, Standing in front of the Starbucks. Someone didn't send me their gate number so I figured I'd treat myself to cheer myself up.
You laugh, grabbing your bag as you type with your thumb, you're ridiculous, did you at least get me one?
Zach replies, No why would I do that?
You roll your eyes and walk to the Starbucks, smiling as you see him holding two coffees, "You did in fact do that."
He turns, smiling as he opens his arms to hug you, "Yeah yeah, don't ruin it."
You step back, taking the coffee he hands you, "Ready?" He nods, "right this way, sweet cheeks."
"You just going to keep coming up with new nicknames each time you talk to me?" You laugh and he stares at you, "Um, yeah. That's what I've been doing? Right?"
You roll your eyes, "What are you going to do when you run out of nicknames? Recycle the old ones."
He laughs, "Boy are you funny. Listen here." He stops pointing to his head and you tilt your head as you watch him tap his temple, "This baby can go for miles. Don't ever underestimate me."
You hold your hand up in defense, "Message received, sweet cheeks."
He gives you a look, trying not to laugh and he sighs, "Not cool." He laughs, turning to lead you to his car.
The ride to the house was filled with small talk, mainly catching up and what not since it's been over a year since you've seen him last.
Once there, you're greeted by Jared and Alyssa with hugs.
"How was the flight?" Jared asks and you shrug with a laugh, "Long."
"Did you do your hair recently? It's so pretty." Alyssa plays with a stand and you nod, "Yeah I went after a meeting last week. I figured I needed a change or something."
"You know, I think I seen it on Instagram." She laughs and Zach rolls his eyes, "girl talk, yuck. I'm not doing this." He walks over to sit down and puts his headphones on.
He motions to the empty chair, "Are we doing this?"
"I still don't have a choice do I?" You laugh and Zach sighs, "Now you're finally getting it."
You set your stuff down, walking over to sit on the red seat. You put your headphones on and look around as Jared and Alyssa get settled in.
"We good?" Zach asks and looks at everyone, and you all nod.
"What's up guys. Welcome to one ninety six of Dropouts." Zach starts in a loud, cheery sing songy tone, "Were here with the guest you've all been waiting for..."
Jared gives Zach a drum roll and Zach looks at you, "Miss Y/n y/l/n."
"Hi everybody." You smile, "Just to let everyone know, Zach didn't give me a choice to do this, so everyone should go flood his comments-"
"No, cut that out. We're cutting that out." Zach tries not to laugh, "Listen. It only took how long for you to finally get here?"
"She's a very busy girl, Zach." Jared laughs, "Speaking of.. Did I, or did I not, see that you're going to be on the next cover of vogue?"
"You guys heard about that?" You smile and look at Alyssa and she claps for you, "Powerful woman."
You smile and look at Zach, "Jealous?"
Zach raises his brows, "That I'm not a woman? Please. I don't need anymore problems." He takes a deep breath, "Anyway. Besides that, I want to ask you a very serious question."
You time your head, "That could be anything.."
Zach fights back a smirk, "You seen, two or three episodes back that we had.. Sam, and Colby on here, right."
Jared laughs, "Zach, where are you going with this?"
"No where. Well. I mean." He laughs, "Somewhere, but just, wait. We aren't there yet."
"Clearly." You and Alyssa say at the same time and you both laugh.
Zach points between the two of you, "See. This is why I don't like having them both here, they like tag team me and not in the way any man would want to happen, ya feel me?"
You roll your eyes, "Sam and Colby, your question." You laugh when he looks at you and he smirks, "You and Sam.. getting down and dirty yeah?"
You laugh, "If you want to put it that way, I mean. Yeah, but not like.. recently."
"Why's that?" Zach rubs his chin with his fingers and you shrug, "in the words of Jared, she's a very busy girl, Zach."
"Mm, okay." He raises his brows and shakes his head, "Now another question I have for you.. and don't get mad at me for asking this, because if I'm correct, they confirmed this when they were here."
You raise your brows, knowing exactly where this is going, "Mhm."
"Did Sam leave the states to be with Colby officially because, now, this is what I was told, you threatened to turn Colby into a spirit himself?" Zach leans back and you stare at him for a few second before laughing, "Oh my god."
"That's.." Jared laughs, "Who did you hear that from?"
Zach makes a face, "Oh so now you're going to sit there and pretend like that isn't what you told me last night?"
"Whoa, okay. No. Y/n. I didn't-" Jared laughs and Zach cuts in, "Oh, see. He can't deny it. His face is as red as the seats and he's starting to smell because he's so full of it."
"What the fuck." Jared rolls his eyes and you sigh, leaning in towards the mic, "For the record, I have never threatened to turn Colby into a spirit."
"But you aren't denying that they're married?" Zach tilts his head, pointing his finger at you, "But even then, you'd have to ward off Colby because I'm sure his spirit will just attach to Sam."
"No that's little girl spirits." Jared laughs, emphasizing again, "Spirits. We've been over this with them. Please don't take that the wrong way."
"Anyway." Zach shakes his head, "When's the last time you talked to either one of them?"
You sigh, "Oh gosh. This will be day three, but I've already said, if I don't hear from him by the end of today I'm sending in a search and rescue team for their asses."
"Oh gosh, that just.. wow." Zach sighs, "Can I just.. that just brought up something very serious and I need to say it, like right now."
"Or what you'll explode?" Alyssa asks causing you and Jared to laugh. Zach looks over at her, "Can you just shut up for two seconds, I have something important I need to say."
Alyssa raises her hands, fighting back her laughter.
Zach looks at you and he takes a deep breath, "Now this.. might be hard for you to hear, as well for everyone else watching and, or listening.. but.." he looks into the camera, "If you wanna see me go retrieve Sam and Colby from." He pauses and looks at you, "Where are they right now?"
You fight back laughter, "Camping in some demonic forest."
He picks right back up, "Camping in a demonic forest, subscribe to the Patreon, you can see all of that plus stuff that's already happened."
"You're.. insufferable." Jared shakes his head as he looks down and Zach just shrugs, "People like them. And if they know that I'm willing to help them, they'll like me, too. Okay. Moving on."
"So you literally got in today? Like your flight." Zach asks and you just stare at him. He cracks a smile, "What?"
"You're literally the one who picked her up from the airport, Zach." Jared laughs and you gasp, "Oh, and he brought me donuts like I said to last week and a coffee at the airport while he was waiting for me."
"Hey hey hey." Zach says quickly, "Don't be telling everyone lies. You know I spit in your coffee before I gave it to you."
"That's atrocious, Dude. What the fuck." Jared closes his eyes and shakes his head. You stare at Zach, "No you didn't." Zach shrugs, "The world may never know."
"I don't know if I believe him, because I can totally see him doing that, just like to fuck with someone close to him." You laugh, "Oh god, I drank all of that, too. Did you really do that?"
Zach sighs, nodding his head as he speaks, "No, I didn't."
"See!" You point to him laughing, "You're a child."
Zach laughs, "Yeah and you're the queen of England." He pretends like he's using a gavel, "Case closed. So. Back to Sam and Colby.. Since you're so close with them, like have you gone on any investigations with them?"
"I used to. Like right before my channel took off, I would go with them maybe twice a month?" You answer and Zach nods, "Is that why your channel blew up?"
You can tell he's asking something that does relate to being touched or spoken to by a ghost, "Are you-"
"Yes." Zach cuts you off and you laugh, "No. I didn't sell my soul. I'm pretty sure it's still there, I mean I don't know how to check but."
Zach reaches over and feels your wrist, "Still there."
"Zach." Jared bursts out laughing, "that's her pulse man, not her soul."
Zach shrugs, "You never know. She may have turned into some sort of succubus demon thing that doesn't have a pulse but she has one. She's good."
You roll your eyes and you can feel your phone vibrating in the pocket of your sweatpants, "I'm getting a call."
"That the devil calling, he wants to return your souls." Zach says and you laugh, "That was good." You pull your phone out, not even hiding your happiness when you see Sam's name, "It's Sam."
You push your one headphone off your ear and bring your phone up, "hey!"
"We just got to service, are you okay?" Sam asks and you keep smiling, "Yeah I'm actually doing the podcast right now."
"Oh fuck, right now? I'm sorry." Sam says and you shake your head, "No, you're fine, how was it?"
You look over at Zach and he wiggles his fingers, "Put him on speaker." You hold up one finger and continue to listen to Sam speak, "I'll have to FaceTime you later and show you. It was pretty nuts."
"Oh god, yeah I'm sure. Zach wants me to put you on speaker so I'm going to do that here in a second." You take the phone away and tap the button, "Okay."
"Is y/n a succubus?" Zach asks straight away, obviously catching Sam off guard, "What.. the fuck?" He laughs, "Is she a what?"
"A demon. I mean I checked her pulse and she has one so I think we're good, but I figured I'd check in with the main ghost hunter because you'd know her better than any of us."
"What kind of things are you talking about on the podcast?" Sam laughs and Zach sighs, "I guess you'll just have to wait and see when the video comes out."
"Um.. okay." Sam laughs and you take him off speaker, "You're off speaker, now."
"Yeah so give it to her good, Sammy my boy." Zach yells and you roll your eyes as Sam laughs, "There's something wrong with him."
"Oh I know. But according to him, his brain can go for miles."
"Y/n. What did I say about telling my secrets." Zach shakes his head and you shrug, "Sorry, that must have been the devil taking over."
Zach raises his eyebrows, "Clearly." He nods, "Ask Sam if he got my text, since they now have service and what not."
You relay the message and Sam takes a second to check, "Oh yeah, I got it."
You nod to Zach, "Yeah, he got it." Zach nods, fighting back a smirk, "Cool, cool."
"Why are you acting like that?" Jared asks and Zach tilts his head, "What do you mean?" Jared looks from him to you, "You're being.. more weird than usual."
"I have my meter for weirdness and it sits right here." Zach holds his hand up, "and I haven't gone above that level since... Mm. Let say. Tuesday?"
"What's going on?" Sam asks and you laugh, "Oh Zach and Jared are arguing. Normal stuff, you know."
Sam laughs, "Oh yeah. Typical." You hear him sigh and you know what's about to happen so you cut him off before he can say anything, "Talk later?"
"You know it. I love you." Sam says and you smile, looking down, "I love you."
The call ends and you look up, "Alright."
"Alright, now we can get on with other things." Zach claps his hands together, "Are we still going out after this?"
You raise your brows, "Out?"
Zach furrows his brows and looks from Jared to Alyssa, "Is your guy's stuff acting up?" He motions to his headphones and they both shake their heads no.
"Mines good, why is yours?" Jared asks and Zach shakes his head, "No, I'm just trying to make sure that y/n can hear me alright because out is exactly what I said."
You roll your eyes, "Oh my god. Shut the fuck up."
"I didn't know if you could hear me okay or not, was just double checking, jeeze. No need to be so aggressive." Zach tries not to laugh and you shake your head, knowing that no matter how much you try and talk yourself out of it, you'll still be going out.
So you just sit back and accept your fate.
.·:*¨ ✘ ¨*:·.
Almost two hours later, the podcast comes to a close and you set your headphones down on the bench, "Is it just me, or did that podcast feel like it went longer than normal?"
You look between Zach, Jared, and Alyssa.
"I don't think it felt any different." Jared shakes his head and shrugs. Alyssa nods, "I think it went over just a little bit, but not much."
You nod and Zach stands up, "That jet lag must be really doing a number on you."
You shrug, "I don't know, but are we at least getting dinner because I haven't eaten since this morning."
"You are such a cry baby. Let's go." Zach laughs as he walks away and you scoff, following him out the door.
You all pile into the car and start driving to the restaurant, "So where was Tara?" You ask leaning forward, "I texted her but I haven't gotten any answer from her."
"She's like, really sick." Zach says, "I called her this morning and it sounded like she swallowed her phone."
"Oh god, if she sounds that bad then she's probably sleeping it off." You lean back, looking down at your phone, "So what did you and Sam talk about?"
You look up at Zach and he looks back at you in the rear view, "When did your name change to Nelly because you're awfully nosey."
You laugh, "Fine then don't tell me. I'm sure he'll tell me anyway."
"Yeah, he probably will." Zach turns into the parking lot and you roll your eyes, accepting that reverse psychology doesn't work on him.
As you get out, you check your phone. You let out a sigh and slip it into your pocket before closing the door.
"I don't know much about the situation.." Alyssa says as she walks over to you, ".. but I know that you and Sam are major endgame if you ask me."
You smile, "Thanks. I just.. we talked about putting pause on our relationship and it's just so hard because the only thing that really changed was us making time for each other. I mean, it didn't really happen much lately anyway, but the fact that we just cut it all out in one shot.." you sigh, "I hate it."
She nods, "I'm sure it's rough, but you both have great careers, and I promise that it'll work out in the end. It might not seem like it now, but it will."
"Thank you." You take a deep breath, "I actually needed that."
She smiles and rubs your back, "Come on, Zach is probably in there bitching."
You laugh and roll your eyes, "Probably."
You walk into the restaurant, making your way to the table that Jared and Zach are sitting at and Zach looks up, "So they didn't get kidnapped."
"You can't get rid of us that easily." You laugh as you sit down, "So what's good here?" You look over at Alyssa and she explains some of her favorite dishes.
Throughout dinner, you caught yourself checking your phone and your sadness grew each time you seen zero notifications from Sam.
At this point, you wanted to go to a hotel and just sleep off your day.
But that wasn't happening.
"Why do you look more miserable than normal?" Zach asks and you look up at him, laughing slightly, "I'm just.. getting really tired."
Wasn't a full lie.
"Uh huh. Well you better wake up, because where we're going next will get your mind off, being tired." He tilts his head and you roll your eyes, "I hate that you know me."
"You secretly love it. Now come on." He stands up, along with you and everyone else and you make your way out to the car.
You're quiet for the most part, except for when they force you to join in on conversation.
"When did you hear about Vogue?" Alyssa asks and you can't help but smirk, "I found out a few days ago. I kind of just waited, kept it to myself. It really didn't hit until Jared asked me about it."
"So wait, the post that they made with your picture titled the next face of vogue didn't make it set in?" Jared asks and you shrug, "honestly, no."
You laugh and sigh, "How much longer?"
"We're here." Zach replies and you nod, looking out the window at the building, "So is this like a bar scene? I'm not dressed for that." You joke and Alyssa laughs, "You look fine, trust me. Your sweats were the way to go."
"I am super comfortable." You laugh as you get out, not even bothering to check your phone.
You follow them in, handing the bouncer your ID, letting him check it before making your way in.
The music is loud and it's filled with a few faces that you've met before, not anyone you're really willing to sit down and have a conversation with, though.
You walk up to the bar, ordering your drink as Alyssa does the same.
"So don't.." she laughs, "Don't tell Zach I told you this, I mean, he'd kill me if he knew you knew this.." she pauses and you nod, smiling, "secret is safe with me."
She leans in, "Zach is actually worried about you. He's afraid that you're working yourself too much and now he's worried that this whole Sam situation will break you."
You're actually kind of surprised, but at the same time, you're not, "I kind of thought that when he called me that night instead of just texting me.. but I'm actually really happy to hear that from someone who's close to him each day."
You take your drink, laying down your money, "keep the change."
Alyssa does the same and looks to you, "Just let him think that he's doing something you don't know about. I don't want him firing me."
"I won't let that happen." You laugh, "Thank you."
She nods and you walk back towards Zach and Jared. Right as you walk up, Zach stands up and walks way, phone pressed to his ear and he doesn't say a word.
You furrow your brows and point to him, "What was that all about?"
Jared sighs, "Last minute cancellation for the podcast. He's not taking it good."
"Oh gosh, who was it?" You sit down and Jared looks to Alyssa before he leans in, "Don't say anything, but it was the triplets."
"Chris, Nick, and Matt?" You raise your brows, "Why'd they cancel?"
Jared shrugs, "No idea, that's what Zach is trying to figure out." You pout, "oh gosh, I have Chris' number. I can text him and see-"
"Alright. We're good to go." Zach comes back and sits down. You look over at him, "So the triplets are coming on? They're not canceling?"
He looks between Jared and Alyssa before tilting his head, "You're not supposed to know.. so just.." he lowers his hand in reference to you lowering your voice and you nod, "Ahh." You lower your voice, "Gotcha."
You sip your drink and pull your phone from your pocket as you feel it vibrate, "Oh. It's Tara."
"What did she say?" Zach says and you read over her text, "Sorry I couldn't make it to the podcast. I was super sick this morning. I just now woke up, but I'm feeling a lot better, are you still in town? Would love to meet up with you before you leave again."
"What's the name of this place? I'm going to text her where I'm at." You look up and Jared tells you the name before you shoot her back a text.
"She said she'll be here in an hour." You put your phone back in your pocket and look down at your empty glass, "I'll be right back."
You get up, walking up to the bar to get another drink.
"Are you okay?" Zach asks and you look over at him, "Yeah? Why wouldn't I be?" He shrugs, "I'm just.. asking. Jeeze. Can't a guy just ask a girl if she's okay?"
You fight back a smirk, knowing that he really cares, "Yes, Zach. I'm fine, and you.. and Alyssa and Jared have all helped me get through the day without crying."
"Good, because I really don't think I could handle you crying.." Zach laughs slightly, "Tara said she'll be here in an hour?"
You nod, "Yeah, she has to get ready first, I guess."
He nods, "Of course she does."
.·:*¨ ✘ ¨*:·.
"Mm." You set your glass down, "Tara's here."
"She is?" Jared asks shocked and you look at him funny, "That's what I just said, isn't it?"
Jared tilts his head, "You've been around Zach for too long." He laughs and stands up, "I'll go get her."
"No I will. I haven't seen her in so long." You stand up, but the three follow you out anyway. You glance behind you, laughing slightly as you shake your head.
You make your way to the door and look around, "Where is she?"
You get a text from Tara, Patio, sorry I saw someone else I haven't seen in a while.
You look at Zach, "She's on the patio."
"To the patio we go." He points, leading you down the side of the building. You round the corner, seeing Tara standing there with a huge smile, "Ahh!" She yells as she runs towards you, "I've missed you!"
"Hey!" You yell and hug her, "I've missed you!" You lean back, "You look so good!"
"Same for you miss cover of vogue!" She pushes your shoulder, "How fucking amazing is that?!"
You nod, "Pretty amazing."
You feel a hand on your shoulder and you think it's just Zach pulling you away to pick on Tara, but when you turn, your heart falls into your stomach, "No fu-fucking way."
Sam is standing there, a huge smile on his face, "I couldn't go without seeing you anymore." He pulls you in for a hug, face buried into your neck and the tears you've been holding in all damn day are finally let loose.
"Hey. Hey, hey." He lays a hand on your head, shushing you quietly, "It's okay." He turns his head, pressing a kiss to your cheek, "I'm here."
You're glued to him. You want to let go so you can lean back and look at him but your body just wants to hold him.
"I'm taking time off. I'm traveling with you. I want to be with you." Sam whispers and you lean your head back, just enough to look at him, "Really?"
He nods, "Really. You're more important than anything in the world. We're making this work. I'm going to make it work."
.·:*¨ ✘ ¨*:·.
The end feels kind of rushed, and I promised you guys this yesterday, but I've been battling a migraine attack non stop for the last four days, so I just wanted to get something out.
A part 2 (with smut) is definitely in the brain for this, you know when I can get it to stop working against me.
But as always, let me know how you liked it. Thanks for reading. I love you all! 🖤
likes and reblogs are majorly appreciated!

hello I have a request for you!! Hazbin hotel edition
Okay okay so Lucifer x Gn reader but reader was like le murete from the book of life?? And they are also taller then Lucifer!!
(I LOVE THAT MOVIE JUST BECAUSE OF MARIA AND LE MURETE!! and I also thought of Lucifer having a xibalba and le murete relationship!!)
##i love you too much
Tumblr media
lucifer x reader
synopsis: to live without you loving me back // if you and lucifer had a la muerte and xibalba relationship
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“you snake! stop making bets that are too extreme!” you hissed at lucifer, flickering in a snap of light to a different tower.
he followed seconds later in pools of shadows, an evident smirk on his face. “you know i love playing a little game! what’s the harm in that?”
crossover your arms over your chest, you pondered for a moment before meeting his gaze. “what kind of bet?”
“the radio demon has disappeared not long ago, how long do you think it’ll take for him to come back?” a harmless bet, but it’s another one to place on the other three you both had going on.
it’s either you or lucifer coming up with new gambling ways amongst your own citizens, and sometimes in the over world as well. the special occasions when you are allowed to roam the earth, which is not a lot.
a tally is kept by a maid in the castle, and is updated whenever either of you tell her what it is. the silliness of it all is that fact that you both rarely live within the walls!
always chasing each other around the pentagram, harmless fun and games being shared between the both of you.
“when will you come back home, my love?” lucifer whined, his head coming to rest against your shoulder. it has been decades since you set foot in your shared corridors, even longer since your shared bedroom.
“when i win the gamble of alastors return.” you stated through a sweet whisper, your gaze peering down at the sinners below.
the clock tower that saves the date of the next extermination is your meeting place, and is used frequently for visits like these.
you won the bet and it was time to return home — the next one was placed on whether if charlie’s plan would work or not: you have your doubts it would.

If you haven't already, could you do something where ghost first meets f!reader? Like super cute love story, how it began maybe also how it's going? (can include smut if you're willing love a good smut lol) I'm so down bad for the cuteness overload because I'm waiting for my own Prince Charming 😩
It was a rainy, miserable day in Manchester, and Simon was growing increasingly bored. He'd been home from deployment for a few weeks now, and the pile of books he had waiting for him at home had long been read, leaving Simon with nothing to do.
Deciding against his better judgement, Simon left the comfortable anonymity of his home, and walked to the local bookstore located two blocks from his small English flat.
It was a spot he always visited when he was home from deployment. The little old lady who owned it was always so nice to Simon, and would always set aside books she knew he'd like.
"Hey Barb." Simon greeted in his gruff British accent, smiling at the woman behind the counter as he walked in.
"There he is, I was wondering when you'd come back home, solider. Got a few books set aside for you, but we've updated our inventory, why don't you take a look around?" Barb smiled warmly at him, gesturing to the abundance of shells laid sporadically throughout the small store.
Simon nodded politely to her, a small smile dancing on his lips as he made his way to one of the shelves. The shelf he always started with, Science Fiction.
The minute his eyes landed on it, he knew he had to have it. He'd been looking for a first edition "Dune" for a long, long time, and here it was just before him. He was so tunnel visioned, so solely focused on the book, he hadn't noticed a small hand reaching for it at the same time he was.
His hand grazed the other persons, and he quickly pulled himself from his daze, looking over and finding you, and Simon could’ve sworn his heart stopped right then and there. You were the most beautiful woman he’d ever laid eyes on, and the small giggle that emitted from your lips as he stared at you caused his cheeks to burn crimson.
"I'm so sorry, I didn't notice anyone else was here." Simon murmured, his voice coming out shaky. Damnit, what the hell was wrong with him?
"Don't worry about it. I didn't notice you were going for the same book.” You replied, your cheeks now as red as his.
There was a moment of awkward silence between the two of you, your eyes still lingering on one another’s, as you were both clearly flustered in the moment.
“Uh, go ahead and take the book, it’s yours.” Simon gestured to the shelf.
“No, no it’s really okay. I’ve read the damn thing at least a half dozen times, I don’t need another copy.” You insisted, taking a step away from the shelf.
Simon grabbed the book, and handed it to you with a smile, as he slowly found his confidence. “Please, take it.”
“If you insist..Have you read it before?” You asked, your head tilting slightly in curiosity. “I’ve not met a lot of people who’ve read it.”
“Not as much as you it seems, but I’ve read it a few times. It was my moms favorite book.” Simon said sheepishly, his mind wandering to thoughts of his mother. “It’s an amazing series, I just wish I had more time to read it.”
“Not enough free time?”
“Never enough free time.” Simon chuckled.
“If that’s not relatable, I don’t know what is. I’m a teacher, over at the university. It seems the only free time I get I’m grading papers, or I’m here with Barb looking at the new books she puts out. I’m Y/N, by the way. I’ve not seen you around before.”
“Simon. I don’t come here terribly often. I'm on leave at the moment and I’m due for a book restock. Teacher huh? What do you teach?” He replied, his eyes drifting back towards yours.
“English, funny enough. So you’re a soldier then?” You asked, your interest in the handsome man before you increasing.
“Something like that.” Simon said, his insides melting as he watched you watch him intensely. Simon wasn’t good at small talk, but he was trying his hardest for you. He didn’t want this conversation to end.
The two of you continued to talk for a few more minutes, the conversation ranging from the weather, to how long the both of you had been coming to this little book store, to your shared interest of science fiction.
“Well, I hate to break this up but I’ve got class in 20 minutes and my students will never let me hear the end of it if I’m late.” You said, not wanting the conversation to end. "It was really nice talking with you."
"Yeah, you too." Simon said, his confidence wavering slightly as he failed to come up with anything else to say. He desperately wanted to ask you for number, but didn't have the nerve to do so.
"I'll ask one more time, are you sure you don't mind?" You asked, holding up the book in your hand. " I feel bad it's the only copy here."
"Of course." Simon nodded, scratching the back of his head nervously. "Besides, it's probably better off in your hands. I'd honestly never get around to reading it, so it'd be more of a table piece."
You nodded, flashing him a warm smile. "Well it was lovely meeting you, Simon. I really hope to see you around here soon."
"I'd like that." Simon agreed, watching as you walked to the front, the smile on his face not faltering in the slightest.
Simon continued to stroll amongst the shelves, nothing quite catching his eye as his thoughts drifted back to you. He regretted not getting your number, and letting his nerves get the better of him. He could only hope that he'd see you in here again. Perhaps he'd make a few more trips here before his next deployment.
He made his way back up to the desk, anxious to see what books Barb had set aside for him. She always knew just the right books for him.
"The woman that was just here left you this." Barb said, passing something to Simon, a knowing smile touching her lips. "Seems you've made quite the impression on our little English teacher."
Simon looked down at the counter, and saw the book he thought you'd left with, and found a small note attached to the front. 'Enjoy the table piece. If you’re interested, I’d love to discuss the book over a tea- Y/N' Simon felt his heart flutter as he re-read your note over and over, his eyes falling to your phone number, neatly written at the bottom of the note.
"Sounds to me like you've got yourself a date, young man." Barb said, meeting Simons eyes with a smile.
"I believe I do." Simon replied, fumbling to put your number in his phone. And he couldn't fucking wait.

Downloading fanfic from AO3
I've been downloading a lot of fanfic lately for personal archival purposes, and I figured I'd share how I do it in case it's useful to anyone else (and so I have it written down in case I forget!).
There are lots of different ways to save fic, including the file download built into AO3, but I find that this gives me the nicest ebooks in the most efficient way.
(Under a cut cause long.)
Download Calibre: https://calibre-ebook.com/ or (clickable link).
Calibre is about the best ebook management and control program around and it's free. You can get it for windows, mac, and linux or download and run it from a portable storage device (I'm using a windows PC).
Install it and run it. It's gonna ask you where you want to put your library. Dealer's choice on this one. I recommend your internal drive (and then back up to external/cloud), but YMMV.
If you want to keep fanfic separate from the rest of your ebooks, you can create multiple libraries. I do, and my libraries are creatively named 'Books' and 'Fic'.
Customise Calibre
Now you're gonna install some plugins. Go to Preferences on the menu bar (far right), click its little side arrow, then choose 'Get plugins to enhance Calibre'.
At the top right of the box that pops up is 'Filter by name'. The plugins you want to get are:
EpubMerge
FanFicFare
Install them one at a time. It will ask you where you want them. I recommend 'the main bar' and 'the main bar when device is attached' (should be selected by default). When you're done, close and reopen Calibre.
The plugins you just installed should appear on the far right of the toolbar, but if you can't see one or both of them, fear not! Just click Preferences (the button, not the side arrow), then Toolbars and Menus (in the 'Interface' section) then choose the main toolbar from the drop down menu. That will let you add and remove things - I suggest getting rid of Donate, Connect Share, and News. That'll leave you room to add your new plugins to the menu bar.
(Do donate, though, if you can afford it. This is a hell of a program.)
Now you're ready to start saving your fave fanfic!
Saving fanfic
I'll go through both methods I use, but pick whatever makes you happy (and/or works best for what you're downloading).
ETA: if the fics are locked you can't easily use FanFicFare. Skip down to the next section. (It does ask for a username/password if you try and get a locked fic, but it's never worked for me - I had to edit the personal.ini in the configuration options, and even then it skips locked fics in a series.)
Calibre and FanFicFare
You can work from entirely within Calibre using the FanFicFare plugin. Just click its side arrow and pick from the menu. The three main options I use are download from URL, make anthology from a webpage, and update story/anthology.
Download from URL: pick Download from URL (or just click the FanFicFare button) and paste the fic's URL into the box (if you've copied it to your clipboard, it will be there automatically). You can do more than one fic at a time - just paste the URLs in one after the other (each on a new line). When you're done, make sure you have the output format you want and then go.
Make Anthology Epub From Web Page: if you want a whole series as a single ebook, pick Anthology Options, then Make Anthology Epub From Webpage. Paste the series URL into the box (if you've copied it to your clipboard, it will be there automatically), click okay when it displays the story URLs, check your output format and go.
Update series/anthology: if you downloaded an unfinished fic or series and the author updates, you can automatically add the update to your ebook. Just click on the ebook in Calibre, open the FanFicFare menu using its side arrow, and select either Update Existing FanFic Books or Anthology Options, Update Anthology epub. Okay the URLs and/or the output format, then go.
Any fic downloaded using FanFicFare will be given an automatically generated Calibre cover. You can change the cover and the metadata by right clicking on the title and picking edit metadata. You can do it individually, to change the cover or anything else specific to that ebook, or in bulk, which is great for adding a tag or series name to multiple fics. Make sure you generate a new cover if you change the metadata.
Browser plugins, Calibre, and EpubMerge
You can also use a browser addon/plugin to download from AO3. I use FicLab (Firefox/Chrome), but I believe there's others. FicLab: https://www.ficlab.com/ (clickable link).
FicLab puts a 'Save' button next to fic when you're looking at a list of fics, eg search results, series page, author's work list etc. Just click the 'Save' button, adjust the settings, and download the fic. You can also use it from within the fic by clicking the toolbar icon and running it.
FicLab is great if you're reading and come across a fic you want to save. It also generates a much nicer (IMO) cover than Calibre.
You can add the downloaded fic to Calibre (just drag and drop) or save it wherever. The advantage to dropping it into Calibre is that all your fic stays nicely organised, you can adjust the metadata, and you can easily combine fics.
Combining fics
You can combine multiple fics into an anthology using EpubMerge. This is great if you want a single ebook of an author's short fics, or their AUs, or their fics in a specific ship that aren't part of a series. (It only works on epubs, so if you've saved as some other format, you'll need to convert using Calibre's Convert books button.)
Select the ones you want to combine, click EpubMerge, adjust the order if necessary, and go.
The cover of the merged epubs will be the cover of the first fic in the merge list. You can add a new cover by editing the metadata and generating a new cover.
Combing with FanFicFare
You can also combine nonseries fics using FanFicFare's Make Anthology ePub from URLs option by pasting the individual fic URLs into the box.
Where there's more than a few fics, I find it easier to download them with FicLab and combine them with EpubMerge, and I prefer keeping both the combined and the individual versions of fic, but again YMMV.
Reconverting and Converting
Once I'm done fussing, I reconvert the ebook to the same format, to ensure everything is embedded in the file. Is this necessary? YMMV, but it's a quick and easy step that does zero harm.
If you don't want your final ebook to be an epub, just convert it to whatever format you like.
Disclaimers
Save fanfic for your own personal enjoyment/offline reading/safeguarding against the future. If it's not your fic, don't distribute it, or upload it to other sites, or otherwise be a dick. Especially if the author deletes it. Respect their wishes and their rights.
This may work on other fanfic sites, eg FFN, but I've never tried so I don't know.
If you download a fic, do leave the author a kudo or a comment; you'll make them so happy.
This is how I save fic. I'm not pretending it's the only way, or even the best way! This is just the way that works for me.

Taking Care
Sebastian (SDV) x Reader
Tumblr media
A/N: I recently got back into Stardew Valley with the 1.6 update and got this dialogue with Sebastian, which gave me many ideas lol. I may end up writing a part 2 to this or just edit this post to add more.
Another A/N: Okay, I totally did edit this to add more, and I think I'm going to do it again at some point lol
"What?! Are you kidding me?" You whisper shout, trying to keep Robin from hearing you.
Who knows what she would do if she found out Sebastian went into the caves alone. To be fair, you were about to knock him upside the head when you saw the gash on his arm.
It was gross, to say the least. It traveled up his forearm, the edges where his skin was split looked wilted, and you were surprised you couldn't see bone with how deep it was. Again, it was pretty gnarly.
"Sebastian, that needs to be taken care of; if you get an infection, you could lose your arm."
"That's a bit overdramatic," Sebastian says, "besides, I can't go see Harvey, he'd tell my mom for sure."
"Fine, then I'm going to take care of it."
You don't wait for his protest, grabbing his other arm and leading him to the couch in his room. Luckily for him, you were just on your way to the mines, so you had first aid supplies on hand.
First, you doused the wound with a life elixir, which stung based on the hiss Sebastian let out. Though already his skin was starting to close back together, the wonders of the Valley magic.
"I can't believe you went in there-"
"Hey, I have every right to go in there, same as you." He snapped, cutting you off.
You looked up and saw the harsh glare he was throwing your way, which you were happy to return as you continued...
"Slow down, hot shot. If you'd let me finish, I was going to say, 'I can't believe you went in there without a weapon.'"
"Oh," He mumbles, his eyebrows softening and his lips frowning, "Sorry, I guess I just didn't want a lecture."
"Well, you deserve one," you remark, "but now isn't the time."
"I lost my mace, but I didn't think it would be a big deal to go into the higher levels."
You sigh while grabbing gauze and a bandage to wrap around his arm. Gently, you take his arm in your hands and begin covering the wound.
Sebastian can feel goosebumps rising as he feels your surprisingly soft hands take care of him. He doesn't want to admit it to you yet, but it feels nice to have you there with him, worried about his well-being.
You finish wrapping his arm and look up to see him already gazing down at you. He almost seems to be in a trance, and you can feel yourself following along. Who knows how long you two spend looking at each other, wondering what will come next.
Taking a chance, you cup his hand in yours, drawing circles with your thumb. Slowly, your other hand travels up towards his face. Sebastian lets out a shaky breath and closes his eyes, ready for anything.
However, before you can make contact, Robin calls for Sebastian from the stairs, breaking the moment. His eyes snap open and you both jolt away, trying to come back to the present moment.
Quickly, Sebastian pulls his sweatshirt sleeve over the bandaged wound and calls back to his mother, telling her he'll be right there. You both emerge from his room, much to Robin's surprise.
"Oh! I'm sorry, I didn't realize you had company." She says, noticing the blush coating yours and Sebastian's face. You can tell she's trying to keep the teasing smile from showing, though she thankfully doesn't ask questions.
"It's alright, I was just leaving anyways." You say hastily, waving goodbye to them both before booking it out of the building.
Before the door closes, you can hear a faint mumble from Robin. Sebastian, in a much louder fashion, tells her to keep her voice down, and you swear you hear him say something akin to "not yet."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's been 2 days since you last saw Sebastian, but now it's Friday, and you couldn't miss the weekly hangout with Sam and Abigail. Of course, it's not like you were avoiding Sebastian, but you also weren't sure how to act around him right now.
Usually, you would share everything with Abigail, but you had promised Sebastian that you wouldn't tell anyone that he got hurt. Unfortunately, Abigail isn't one to miss things going on with her best friend, so you had to admit to her that something had happened between you two.
This made tonight particularly anxiety-inducing as you didn't know what to expect when you walked into the saloon. You were the last to join, not unusual with your work on the farm.
The trio is in their usual spots, Seb and Sam playing pool with Abigail sitting on the couch. After saying hello to the others in the saloon, you join them.
Robin tries to slyly give you a thumbs up when you pass by. You and Demetrius furrow your brows in confusion, but you give her a smile and continue on.
"Hey, Y/n!" Abigail calls, waving you over to sit beside her on the couch.
Sebastian was just going to hit the cue ball when he heard your name, causing the pool stick to shake. The cue ball ricochets wildly across the table and Sam laughs at Sebastian's frown.
"Hmm, you seem a little distracted, Seb," Abigail says, "I think it's my turn."
You watch as she gets up and ushers Sebastian out of the way, wanting to pull her back to the seat. The boys share a look of confusion, but Seb moves over to the side with you.
While Sebastian's back is turned to her, Abigail tries to give you a discreet wink, to which you squint your eyes at her.
When he gets to the couches, Seb hesitates whether to join you or sit on the adjacent seat.
Before you can move, he shakes his head a little and plops down beside you, considerably closer than Abby was.
You try to mask the surprise and keep your body from going rigid. Why were you freaking out? He's one of your best friends; it's not like you haven't sat together before.
You pinch the inside of your hand to shake you from your thoughts. Looking over, you see Sebastian's eyes trained on the pool game.
Right as the cue ball cracks against an object ball, you lean closer to his ear and whisper, "How's your arm feeling?"
Seb lets out a shaky breath, something he's been doing a lot with you recently.
"It's good, there's just a scar left." He says, moving to face you and lifting his jacket sleeve just enough for you to see.
He's right, the wound has completely closed, and the scar is faded to a light pink. You feel relief flood your system, not realizing how worried you were about him.
"I'm glad." You say softly, going to touch the scar before pausing.
Glancing up, Sebastian gives you a tiny nod, and you watch the goosebumps rise on his arm as you make contact. You gently run your fingers along the mark, making him shiver.
"Does it hurt?" You whisper, lifting your gaze to meet his.
He shakes his head, "Just sensitive."
You cup his arm in your hands, a mimic of what happened 2 days ago in his room. This time, he flips his arm over, bringing his hand to yours, fingers dancing over your palm.
Now it's your turn to have your breath catch, but you don't break the eye contact. Just before Sebastian can lace his fingers through yours, Abigail cheers loudly, causing you two to break away.
Broken from your shared trance once again, you see Robin walk into the room. Sam and Abigail are looking at you both with a raised eyebrow as Sebastian talks to his mother.
"Seems like something that should happen in private," Abigail whispers to you, and you have to fight the blush clawing its way up your neck.
"Seems like something that's never going to happen." You respond. In your defense, it's difficult to think that the universe isn't stopping this for a reason.
Sam shakes his head vigorously, "It will, be patient."
You huff and roll your eyes playfully, kind of, but the conversation is halted when Sebastian returns to the group.
"Guess it's time to go home," Sam says, guiding Abigail to the door of the saloon.
You and Sebastian follow, but he grabs your arm to make you stop once you leave the building.
"Let me walk you home."
Your mouth drops open, but no words come out. However, at the sound of Abigail kicking the saloon trashcan, you manage to respond,
"Okay."
18+ | modern office steddie au | cw: public sex, undernegotiated kinks, unsafe sex | crossposted to ao3 here
eddie doesn't do it often. okay, maybe that's a stretch. frequently might be a better word for it, more accurate. but he wouldn't say he does it everyday or anything. it's just a little break from the day, an escape from the monotony of corporate america.
he's only been in this new tech support job for a few months but he's already comfortable enough that working on his next novel at his desk doesn't give him anxiety anymore. he isn't afraid someone is looking over his shoulder all the time like he did when he first started with the company.
the thing is, eddie's good at tech. he's good at finding the problems, finding even better solutions. half the time all he's doing is updating and restarting people's equipment that hasn't been refreshed in years. so he finds himself with enough free time at his desk to work on the second installment of his fantasy novel when the problems seem to be at a low.
as he waits for his laptop to boot up, eddie cracks his knuckles and grabs his phone to send a text to his editor that may or may not also happen to be his best friend so he could cut back on over exuberant editing fees. he doesn't read the message over, just fires out a text to nancy quickly before pocketing his phone.
he only realizes the typo once he gets a laughing emoji in return and cackles at what he actually sent.
"getting ready to write some smut on the cock!!!!!"
it doesn't take long to send a winky face before correcting himself to say " on the clock obviously", before pocketing his phone and opening the document where his novel is. just as eddie is about to start typing, a voice behind him makes him jump out of his skin.
"what was so funny?" steve asks, arm propped on the top of his flimsy cubicle wall, legs crossed over one another, smirk on his face.
eddie forces himself not to swoon. he takes in the way his white button up stretches across his chest, dress pants oh so snug over his thighs, hair pushed back in the way that only steve harrington could pull off. he may have only been at the office for a few months, but ever since he first saw him, steve very quickly became the only thing eddie could think about.
"i'm sure you wouldn't find it funny," he starts, tilting his laptop screen halfway shut so steve can't catch him doing his other job, his favorite job, while at work.
steve smirks again, his cheek lifting enough to crinkle his eye. "try me, munson."
with a dramatic push, eddie rolls in his wheely chair and stands up so he can keep his voice low. "i sent my editor a dirty text on accident."
if steve's surprised, he doesn't show it.
"editor, hmm? for what?" his voice is as low as eddie's and it makes the cubicle feel even smaller than it is. like everything in the world has zeroed in on their whispers to each other.
"i might be writing a book. well, technically i've already written a book. this is just the sequel."
steve's eyes flick from eddie to his laptop and then back once more. "is it anything i'd know?"
he cackles again, picturing steve reading his smutty fantasy novel, eyebrows furrowed as he tries to make any sense out of the haphazard world map eddie drew for the back page. but then again, he could easily picture steve in the world he made. he'd be a prince- no, scratch that, an elven prince- just like the one he's writing about in this one.
"i do read, you know. i'm not entirely up to date with everything but i do like books." steve says it like he's almost hurt and it makes eddie look back up at him, mellowing out his wide grin into a softer smile.
"oh, i wasn't doubting that. i just doubt you read elf porn in your free time."
whatever hurt was lacing through steve's face is gone, replaced with wide eyes and eyebrows to his hairline and a bright smile pulling at his cheeks.
"yeah," he says a little breathless, "yeah, definitely not the first thing i'd reach for."
eddie gives him a told-you-so head nod and brings a hand up to run through his hair, tracking steve's eyes as he follows the motion for a moment. having his eyes on him rushes through eddie like a wave crashing and he's halfway tempted to do it again if he didn't think it would look forced.
"well you probably don't know mine then."
as he turns to go back to his chair, he hears steve cough to get his attention back, arms crossed over his chest to make his shirt pull taut over his beautiful, gorgeous, annoyingly perfect biceps. "so what was the dirty text?"
"well, it was actually a typo," eddie starts, cocking his head to the side with a smirk as he pulls out his phone, "so an unintentional dirty text. but still funny, none the less. and i don't think i can say it out loud without getting hr called on my ass so-"
he holds up his phone so steve can see the brief conversation between him and nancy, watches his eyebrows shoot back up to his hairline, watches as his mouth drops open for a millisecond before giving eddie another goddamn smirk. steve leans back, drops his arms to put a hand on his hip, and looks eddie less than subtly up and down.
"so... do you want to?"
eddie can feel the moment his heart stutters in his chest. a combination of steve's general... steveness plus the implication of what the text said and his mind travels to a dirty, dirty, not meant for work place until he pieces it somewhat together and asks-
"...are you asking if i'm gay?"
steve huffs out a laugh and takes a step further into eddie's cubicle. there already isn't much room and with him coming in the tiniest bit closer, their toes are almost touching.
"sure," he says like it's the easiest thing to say on a thursday afternoon. "it can be a two-part question if you want."
a few things run through eddie's head all at the same time:
steve's close enough that he can feel the heat radiating off of the arm he now has resting on his desk, and he's really about to come out to a coworker which he normally leaves for at least 6 months into a new job, and that he thinks he's going to pass out if steve is actually asking what he thinks he's asking.
do you want to write smut while you're on my cock?
he doesn't know where he finds the courage, honestly. call it a slow thursday, call it a little extra motivation for his novel. eddie scoots closer and throws caution to the wind.
"then yes to both."
he's never seen steve's office. he's been to the top floors before when some higher up needed him to install a web browser on his new desktop so he has kind of an idea of what the private offices look like.
eddie didn't expect the first time that he got to see steve's office would be spread out, bent over his desk with his novel pulled up on his laptop while steve runs his hands over his ass.
"here's how this is going to work," steve whispers close to his ear while he lays against his back, snaking a hand up to undo the knot of eddie's messy tie, popping open a button on his dress shirt in the process. "you stop writing, i stop fucking you."
with a hum, eddie presses his hips back, up on his tiptoes with his off brand dress shoes pinching his feet tightly. "i think i can manage that."
"i'm not finished," he bites gently at eddie's ear lobe, returning his hands to palm over his ass cheeks. "everything i do to you, and i mean everything, needs to be written down. turn me into a character or something, i don't care, but i expect you to be thorough."
he doesn't mean to moan at the instructions, really he doesn't, but it's so easy to picture steve morphing into a character in his world. his mind races trying to figure out how exactly to write him into the scene that had already started, but with a snap of his fingers as the idea clicks, he writes out a quick line and looks at steve over his shoulder for approval.
"who's sylvar?" steve asks, pronunciation clunky on his tongue.
"sylvar is an elven prince, might as well make you him. besides, you both have an s name."
steve chuckles, his breath ruffling eddie's hair. "okay, fair. prince, huh?"
he doesn't have to look over his shoulder again to know that steve's smirking so he rolls his eyes and finishes the sentence, only breaking away to gasp as steve brings his hand between his thighs to spread them further apart.
"i'm gonna take a wild guess and say that elidyr is supposed to be you?"
eddie nods and pulls his tie off the rest of the way. "let's see, he's one of the prince's newest attendants, known for being a bit out of control, gets chastised for staring at the prince's ass in his khakis too much-"
"you're making that one up, huh?"
he tosses his tie to the side and brings a hand up to tangle in steve's hair, pulling his lips down to his neck and waiting for him to get the hint and start kissing. "steve, i'm making all of it up. that's the way writing a book goes."
"is that so?" he murmurs playfully against his neck, teeth pressing against the skin as he smiles, hands yanking on his hips to get eddie flush against his cock. "...i don't see you writing."
eddie huffs and shakes his head before writing out quickly how sylvar grabbed elidyr by the hips roughly to show him how excited he was. steve takes the typing as the go ahead and quickly undoes both of their pants before running his hands up eddie's now bare thighs.
he didn't really have any idea of how well he'd be able to hold out to steve's ministrations while having to write them out at the same time, but any confidence he had in himself leaves when steve's palm cups his cock through his briefs. eddie cants his hips forward and brings his hand back up to tangle once more in steve's hair.
and just like that, the touch is gone.
"oh, come on!" eddie whines and brings his hands back to the keyboard, typing in random filler words until suddenly he has no underwear and hands pulling his ass cheeks apart.
"gonna fucking take you apart... shit," steve whispers and eddie doesn't think he was supposed to hear it, but he writes it into the scene anyway.
there's a cool dribble of what must be lube on his hole and he fights against the shiver it sends up his spine. "you have lube in your office?"
"no, i have lube in my briefcase. big difference."
eddie doesn't really see how to the two are different, but he laughs to appease steve before getting cut short as a finger starts to enter him. he must whine, must jerk or do something wrong because it's leaving almost as soon as it had arrived.
"steve, i swear to god," eddie groans, head dropping down as he types without looking. poor nancy is going to have a hell of time reading and editing over this draft.
they both sigh when the finger presses into him once more and steve weaves his other hand into eddie's hair to pull him up and look at his screen. "there you go, just keep typing. write about how good it feels."
and shit. that's hotter than he expected it to be.
it goes well for all of a few minutes, eddie typing and steve reading over his shoulder, scissoring his fingers to get him nice and wet and open. they both somehow manage to keep their composure, filthy words being muttered out loud that then end up on the screen.
it's after steve gets him cock in him that it all goes down hill.
"oh fuck-" eddie moans as his leg gets hoisted up for a better angle. steve's grip on his hip is brutal, bound to be leaving bruises, as he pulls eddie back to meet him in the middle.
his chest is rubbing against the pleather desk cover, nipples catching on just the right side of painful when steve pushes his shirt up and out of the way. his dick is flopping against his thigh with every thrust, the lack of friction driving him insane.
he swears he only takes his hands away from the laptop for a second but then steve's pulling out quickly, dropping his leg and getting eddie off balance. he whines like he's throwing a temper tantrum before bringing his fingers back up to type more nonsense, gasping when steve slides back in like no time has passed.
"read it," he huffs next to his ear, "tell me how perfect you make fucking me sound."
"oh my god," eddie croaks, eyes rolling back as steve lets go of his hip once more to pull his head upright. "sylvar fucks wi-without abandon, hitting every right spot possible inside elidyr, the heat of his h-heavy cock punishing him making him mad with lust."
"good, yeah that's good. like when i fuck you hard?" steve grunts out before pistoning his hips even faster, eddie's moans bouncing off the bare office walls. "tell me more, keep going baby."
"the grip he uses to hold onto elidyr's hair is the only thing keeping him upright. this is all he could want, tending to the prince's every desire, being whatever the prince wants him to be." eddie expects it when the fingers in his hair curl even tighter, his back bowing against the desk with the pressure, but he still keens loudly at the pull.
steve chuckles roughly, like he's barely holding on himself, hips stuttering before evening out. "is that what you want?"
"wha-" eddie murmurs, not trusting his voice much more than that, his brain turning into mush. "is what what i want?"
"want to tend to my desires, want to be for me to use however i please?"
and the thing is, realistically, eddie knows this whole thing is weird, blending his two worlds together in a way he's never done before, but it doesn't stop him from forgoing the rules and bringing a hand down to work over his cock. "god, don't stop. please, please, please..."
steve must be tired of the game, too, because he doesn't even attempt to quit what they're doing to punish eddie as he stops writing. he barely has time to appreciate that the game is finally over because the hand in his hair slides around to rest gently around eddie's throat, pulling him up so his back is to steve's chest, every thrust punching out another gasping breath.
"answer the question," he says, punctuating each word with a snap of his hips. "gonna let me use you how i want?"
eddie has died and gone to heaven and the cause of death is a mixture of steve's tongue, hands, and cock. his mind wanders to what else they could do together, what else he'd let steve do, what else he wants steve to do. he sends up a quick thank you to whoever is listening that he saw the job posting for this company so he could be here in this moment with a possible sex god in his midst.
the hand that he had braced on the desk for support makes its way up to cover steve's on his throat, a barely there pressure combined with his quick fingers on his cock that sends him over the edge.
he breathes out a "yes" as he shoots come across the stop of steve's desk and see stars dancing in his eyes. steve fucks him through it, whispers filth of what he wants to do to eddie right into his ear, and when he comes back to himself, he digs his nails in the top of steve's hand.
"want it, want you, however you want me-" he chokes out.
and when steve finally comes inside of him, eddie makes sure he bends back down with his cock still pounding into him to write some line about how nice elidyr thinks it feels to filled up from someone who probably shouldn't be giving him the time of day. he tries not to find parallels as steve kisses up the back of his neck as he rocks his hips for the final time.
eddie's bare ass is in a mixture of their come as they maneuver him around to let him sit up and wrap his legs around steve's hips, pulling their spent cocks together while they lazily make out. steve's hands dance softly over his bare thighs, eddie threads his fingers through steve's hair.
"how does it end?" steve whispers against his lips.
"i don't know yet," eddie says truthfully, his mind wandering as kisses start to trail down his jawline. "how do you want it to end?"
"i don't suppose they have bars in this elf world, do they? one where they can go on an actual date to before going back to the palace or whatever to ravage each other?"
eddie grins, tipping his head back to catch steve's lips one more time in a slow kiss. "i can arrange for them to go to the tavern. i think they'd both like that."
the next morning, slightly hungover and draped over each other in steve's way too large bed, eddie ignores a text from nancy asking why the names change halfway through the draft and wondering who the fuck steve is. eddie silences his phone and goes back to sleep, so glad that he didn't double check his first message yesterday for typos.
Why are there Infinity Loops or Möbius Strips in Good Omens?
The infinity loop, it's the idea of something that is unlimited and endless, you know...
Tumblr media
In this post, I'm going to explore some of the symbols in the show that I think relate to this concept of eternity. For example, have you noticed that the infinity loop shows up amongst the symbols at the start of Season 1? While God's narrates about her "ineffable game" of her own devising, here it is on screen:
Tumblr media
Why do we see so many infinity symbols here? Where else can we see this same symbol?
Read on for the places I've spotted it in both S1, S2 and the book. I’m hoping you’ll let me know if I missed any, and what you think it all means!
Eternity in Good Omens
In the book, when Crowley is explaining the concept of eternity to Aziraphale, he uses the idea of a bird which flies every thousand years to the same mountain to sharpen it's beak. Here's the conversation, with Aziraphale's interruptions edited out (pg. 55 - 56 in my hardcopy):
“Just you think about it," said Crowley relentlessly. "You know what eternity is? You know what eternity is? I mean, d'you know what eternity is? There's this big mountain, see, a mile high, at the end of the universe, and once every thousand years there's this little bird—” “Okay. And every thousand years this bird flies—" "flies all the way to this mountain and sharpens its beak—” “Sharpen its beak on the mountain," said Crowley. "And then it flies back—” “And after a thousand years it goes and does it all again," said Crowley quickly.”
This story originally came from a folk tale called the Shepherd Boy. It's very short and you can read the Brother's Grimm version here. (Update: The Annotated Pratchett also thinks this may be a reference to James Joyce's Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man).
If we take Crowley at his word, then eternity in Good Omens is represented by repeating the same thing over again, whether that's flying forever to the same mountain, or having to watch the Sound of Music "over and over and over and over and over and over and over" into infinity.
The Infinity Loop
The common symbol for infinity, ∞, was invented by the English mathematician John Wallis in 1655. Being an extremely popular symbol, it shows up in a lot of places, including the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. Several other uses are detailed on the wikipedia page.
So, where does it appear in Good Omens? In addition to God's monologue, we also see it during the S1 baby swap sequence as part of the Satanic nun's costumes. Here it is on the upside-down watches they wear:
Tumblr media
Here it is again on Newt's belt buckle in S1:
Tumblr media
Here's another possible infinity symbol on Newt's computer screen, when he's working at United Holdings:
Tumblr media
Outside of the show, it also appears on the merch released post-S2 (though a little bit disguised in the form of the snake wrapped around them). Included is the tagline of "The end was just the start".
Tumblr media
There are also two references to infinity in the book. Here's the first very near the start (pg. 14 of my 2015 hardback edition):
“He [God] plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players, [ie., everybody.] to being involved in an obscure and complex version of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won't tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.”
And here's the other, closer to the end, at the airfield (pg. 363 of my edition):
“Adam glanced up. In one sense there was just clear air overhead. In another, stretching off to infinity, were the hosts of Heaven and Hell, wingtip to wingtip. If you looked really closely, and had been specially trained, you could tell the difference.”
So, Good Omens makes a few references to infinity, which I find interesting in itself. But wait, there's more!
The Ouroboros
There is another symbol which also appears in Good Omens and also suggests a form of repetition - the ouroboros. The ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon eating its own tail and depicts an eternal cycle of renewal - an end which comes back to the start again. I recommend taking a look at the whole wikipedia page, which is quite fascinating:
Now, this would be a rather abstract representation, but I think this appears on the wall of Nina's cafe. Unfortunately, in my image Terry's name has been cut off, but it does say Terry and Neil within those segments of the loop:
Tumblr media
So we have the infinity symbol, the ouroboros... anything else? Well, yes, there is a third symbol for us to ponder over.
The Mobius Strip
Closely related to the idea of the infinity symbol is that of the mobius strip. To oversimplify things, the mobius strip is a object which is a continuous surface in a loop. At first glance, it appears to have two sides, but these are indeed all part of the same side (maybe we should call this "our side"?). As shown in the below gif, an object traversing the surface of the strip can repeat in a continuous loop.
Tumblr media
Where does the mobius strip appear in Good Omens? Well, it appears in the book. Here it is being used to refer to Anathema's broken bike wheel (pg. 92 in my 2015 hardback edition):
“Behind the Bentley a bicycle lay in the road, its front wheel bent into a creditable Mobius shape, its back wheel clicking ominously to a standstill.”
And again, describing the discussions of the Them, while Adam is coming into his powers (pg. 229 in my hardback):
“Serve everyone right if all the nucular bombs went off and it all started again, only prop'ly organized," said Adam. "Sometimes I think that's what I'd like to happen. An' then we could sort everythin' out." The thunder growled again. Pepper shivered. This wasn't the normal Them mobius bickering, which passed many a slow hour. There was a look in Adam's eye that his friend couldn't quite fathom—not devilment, because that was more or less there all the time, but a sort of blank grayness that was far worse.”
Not only does the word "mobius" appear twice in the book, but Neil has continued to be interested in such ideas, releasing the song Mobius Strip in April 2023 (as brought to my attention by @embracing-the-ineffable). The song is a meditation on the nature of time, magic and how things tend to repeat. In the song, the grandfather shows the boy a trick to creating a mobius strip using paper, tape and some scissors. Here's how the song concludes:
"I'm... Somewhere on the strip We all are, walking the sign of infinity into the darkness And I'm looking for signs of a life, in a memory Reflected in the mirror I'm a mobius strip We all are We only ever see one face It's the twist that brings you back where you started"
If you're unfamiliar with the idea of creating a paper-based mobius strip, here's a video on how it works:
youtube
Is the loop Aziraphale and Crowley?
To form a mobius strip, you need to cut the paper first, flip it, and then join the ends back together.
To me, this reminds me a lot of the S2 opening sequence, when we see the bridge disconnect, separating Aziraphale and Crowley on either side, only to then reconnect at another place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Does this mean the bridge, and perhaps the loop, represents our ineffable duo? This merch sure seems to suggest so...
Tumblr media
That could be one interpretation of this sequence, though I'm sure there are others. What do you think? Does the loop say anything about Crowley and Aziraphale's relationship to one another?
Put it all together and...
In summary, we have at least three different symbols signifying some sort of repetition in Good Omens - the infinity loop, ouroboros and mobius strip. So, what might they mean? Why do you think it's been included, and so often? Even more importantly, have I missed any? There's endless details to be mined from this show, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are more.
I have a few theories, but nothing concrete yet, so I'm really interested in hearing everyone's ideas!
Chapter 1: November
Tumblr media
☾ Pairings ➼ Levi Ackerman x fem!mute!Reader (she/her pronouns), set in a modern semi-fictional world
☾ Summary ➼ Due to childhood trauma, you find yourself an adult without the ability to speak. After years of working on it, you have found ways to live without a voice. Now here in your late 20s, you are 5 months in getting used to a new town. On a fateful day in late November, you and your adopted sister visit a local bookstore-café, unaware of the friendships about to blossom. Throughout the months, one friendship in particular develops into something more.
☾ Content/Warnings ➼ fluff, slowburn, oblivious feelings, angst, mention of minor character deaths, trauma, illness, adoption, mentions of fire, disabilities, alcohol use, very light nsfw mentions, eventual smut (these update with every chapter)
☾ Author's note ➼ Hey guys! This is my first time writing fanfiction in a loooooong time, like the last time I wrote was probably in 2011. So with that said please be kind with any feedback or comments. I hope you enjoy! (also I made Hange's pronouns she/her/them/they)
Edit (11/27/2023): Hey guys, welcome to my little world of Unspoken Words. I have quite literally used this story as a way to better myself as a writer. As you read on, you may find that I've progressed (ofc I have a long way to go) but because of that, my first few chapters might be rough. With your patience, you may find a liking to this story as I know I've loved writing every word of it.
20-something years ago
You’re not sure how, but you find yourself sitting in the back of a big, white van. Red and blue lights danced in your eyes, and it felt like a thousand people surrounded you. Something plastic is placed on your face then you are instructed to breathe in deeply. You thought it was funny to be told to breathe, like you don’t just do it naturally, but you follow instructions regardless. It’s hard though, every part of your body hurts, chest included. Every breath you take feels like your insides are on fire.
‘Fire’, you think.
Everything is on fire.
Present Day
Levi stood blank faced as he meticulously cleaned the blender station for what felt like the 100th time today. The late afternoon rush had just tapered down so he took advantage of the next to empty café to clean as much as he could before closing for the evening.
“It’s 20 degrees outside, how are people still wanting frozen drinks.” he murmurs to himself, placing the blender back in its spot. Levi turns to the front counter and slings the towel he was using to dry things onto his shoulder.
His best friend, roommate, and business partner could be seen restocking some books on tall shelves, a gentle smile lighting up his boyish features. It’s been about a year and a half since they started this business venture together and they had no idea at the time how successful their bookstore-café combo would be in this small town.
Erwin’s thirst for knowledge kept their shelves as variable as ever while Levi’s love for perfecting the art of tea kept the drinks flowing. The problem, however, was Levi’s lack of people skills. He was seldom seen at the register, nor would you ever see him smile or talk to the customers. He often would leave you with a grunt and a swift turn after handing off the drinks.
No, for that, they had hired a couple of local highschoolers to do the facing work.
“Mr. Smith, Levi?” a soft voice rang out to the left of him. Levi shifted his attention to a taller girl with shoulder length raven hair standing next to him. Being as Mikasa is his cousin, they found early on how weird it was to be called ‘Mr. Ackerman’ as they shared the same surname. It was this connection too that got them to where they are today.
“Would it be okay if Eren and I take off a little early tonight? We have some big tests coming up and we’d like to take some extra time to study.” Mikasa shifted her dark eyes to the darkening windows as the sun set just over the horizon. Pinks and oranges flooded the partially clouded skies.
”Tch.” Levi could not help but roll his eyes. He raised a brow at her and leaned back against the counter behind him for support. “Sure, I guess,” he continues. “But do you really need it or is it for that blockhead?”
As if summoned by his words, Eren comes up from behind Mikasa and wraps a red scarf around his girlfriend’s neck, both of their jackets hanging off one of his arms. Eren is a good kid, always on time and followed directions, but the amount of sass he held in his body was something else. Levi and Erwin did not mind though, as he added a certain energy in the café that the customers seemed to enjoy. The two men wouldn’t say it out loud, but they really appreciated having them both on the team.
“Hey, I heard that. And yes, I need to study desperately. Econ is so hard and for what?!” Eren’s teal eyes widened for emphasis. To add to it he even put on a fake pout.
“I-”
“Just take the trash with you on the way out and you’re good to go.” Erwin piped up from behind a bookshelf.
Mikasa nodded in acknowledgement towards the voice, a silent thank you. Like Levi, she was not one for many words. He once thought it was an Ackerman thing but then he thought back to his annoying uncle and changed his mind quickly.
With that, she and Eren both untangled the aprons from their bodies, grabbed their belongings, and picked up the trash bags that were already taken out of the cans. They opted to leave through the back since the dumpsters were located that way. Again, Levi wouldn’t say it to anyone out loud, but he really did like those kids.
Erwin could be heard stacking more books into the shelves which left Levi to polish the counters again. It was the last hour before they closed so it stayed quiet for the most part, only interrupted by the sounds of scuffling shoes and books being placed on hard surfaces. Light jazz filled the rest of the silence. Then the bell signifying new customers rang from the front.
“Levi, can you grab that?”
The raven-haired man just huffed in response then stepped over to the register. His eyes fell on two figures right in front of him. A frazzled brunette and... you.
Due to the season, you are bundled up in a thick parka and knitted beanie. A big scarf wraps around your neck and face so that all Levi could see is your flushed cheeks and thick lashed eyes. Truthfully, you reminded him of a marshmallow.
“What’ll it be?” he asks, deadpan. The brunette is the one to respond, the voice loud enough to make him wince.
“Hmmm... well one English breakfast tea latte with lots of room for sugar aaaaand I’ll take a peppermint hot chocolate. Oh, and extra whip! We’ll drink it here.” She fished out a card with a dramatic thwip and handed it to Levi’s outstretched hand.  Their café is one of those where if you were to stay, they offered washable cup ware as to keep the prices down on disposable cups. Not to mention the lessened ‘environmental impact’ as Erwin would say.
Levi glances at you before turning to make both orders. You give a small wave and smile a little, but he was already working quickly on the drinks.
He went into autopilot as he steeped the tea and steamed the milk. He really appreciated customers that ordered anything outside of coffee, especially when it came to tea. It’s not that he hated coffee, though it’s not like he liked it either, but it just wasn’t his thing. Coffee offered a different kind of bitterness that he wasn’t very fond of. With extra whipped cream in one and extra space in the other, he whirled around to place the drinks on the counter.
The one with glasses is the one that picks them up and they promptly walk in the direction of where you currently sit, one of the tables in the back corner by the window. You were stripped of your big parka and scarf, though the beanie stayed. Your eyes were wandering around the café in wonder, and Levi was pretty sure this had to be your first time here. But truthfully, he wouldn’t know, he didn’t make it his business to know his customers. That was Erwin’s and the kids’ job.
“The shelves are full and I’m exhausted.” Erwin came around the counter with a couple of empty boxes in his arms, heading straight for the back to the dumpster. Levi stepped back and leaned against the counter once again, his own black tea that had steeped while making yours cradled in his fingertips. He kept looking at his only customers while he sipped the black liquid. The teacup almost slipped out of his grip as he saw you dumping a large amount of sugar into your cup.
 There you sit, extremely focused on the cup in front of you and lips pressed together tightly, almost as if you were afraid you’d put in too much. The sight would have been funny if you hadn’t just ruined your entire tea, he thinks to himself. You smile to yourself in satisfaction and put the sugar jar back where it came from. While you stir the sweetener in gently, the brunette in front of you talks animatedly. Hands were flying everywhere, and Levi could practically feel the energy radiating from the corner of the room.  You were doing the same, silently laughing.
Suddenly the front door flew open, the bell ringing loudly with it. Levi grits his teeth, steeling himself for yet another customer interaction. But his shoulders dropped in relief at the sight of only Carly, Erwin’s girlfriend. She saunters up to the counter with a big smile aimed towards Levi and without even asking she slid behind the bar. Erwin had already made it from the back and was in the process of putting away the leftover ingredients from the day. Carly wraps her arms around her boyfriend and plants a big kiss on his face, to which Levi quickly looks away. It wasn’t weird for her to come in right as they were about to close.
What was weird, he thought, was the shock that flooded your face as you eyed the very public display of affection. Levi knit his brows in confusion as the brunette pivoted in her seat to see what you were staring at. Their face fell, any evidence of a good time completely erased.
“Carly?”
The person in question whipped around so fast at the voice and the panic that exuded from her was palpable. She quickly unwrapped herself from Erwin’s embrace.
“Hange.”
If it wasn’t for the jazz in the background, the lengthy silence that followed would have been deathly.
Carly clears her throat and laughs awkwardly.
“Uh, why are you here?”
The person named Hange just lifts their hot chocolate cup awkwardly, not really saying anything. Their eyes shift between Carly and Erwin, clearly understanding what had happened.
“I-I’m sorry, you guys know each other?” Erwin sounds cautious, like he already knew the answer. Of course, he would, he isn’t dumb. His piercing blue eyes survey the situation, going back and forth between the two.
“Well, uh. I-” Carly stutters, clearly at a loss of what to say in the predicament she found herself in.
“She’s my girlfriend.” Hange claims calmly.
This admission makes Erwin sigh heavily, confirming what he had pieced together. Levi stared at him in bewilderment as the man just chuckled quietly.
“Well. I suppose that’s it then.” And with that he turns on his heel and stalks off to the back room.
“Wait, Erwin I can explain!” She follows right on his heels and disappears into the back room as well. A minute later you can hear hysterical crying and calm retorts reverberating from the back. If Levi could shrink into the cabinets to get out of this situation, he would. Instead, he focuses on the other party who were having a very quiet and rushed discussion. Well, a one-sided discussion, as he only heard one voice.
Levi, realizing it was almost time to close anyways, rushes to close the distance between him and the front door. He really did not want to have to deal with other customers while the drama unfurled. So, he flips the door sign to ‘Closed’ and unplugs the ‘Open’ neon sign hanging in the window. A couple walks by about to open the door, probably out for a café date from the looks of it. But they were only met with a dead stare from the sharpest eyes they’d ever seen. With that, they briskly turned around and left down the sidewalk.
Levi spins around and from here he gets a better look at the two trapped customers. You were moving your hands all over the place like you were earlier. But with an even closer look he realizes you weren’t just talking animatedly with your hands; you were talking with them. You were signing.
You reacted to your partner’s conversation just fine, so it was clear you had some sort of hearing. Your scarf now hung loose around your shoulders, and it looked like you had tears brimming in your eyes. Levi swiftly walks back to the counter; this is obviously not a conversation he needed to be a part of.
“Hey, don’t worry about me. It’s only been a couple of months. Really, it’s better to find out now than 3 years from now.” They laughed without humor. You know when Hange was saving face for your sake, she was never as sly as she thought she was.
‘You don’t need to be strong right now.’ You sign then reach your hand out to touch her cheek softly. Physical touch had become your second language early on, if only to emphasize. Fortunately, Hange was okay with that and often embraced it with open arms.
“I know, my little strawberry. I just need some time to process everything.” They pat you on the head lightly with a small grin. You swat their hands, blushing at the nickname you were so graciously given so many years ago.  But you nod back, knowing they would not change their mind.
The tall blonde glides through the back door, alone. His face was grim as he tugged loose the tie around his neck.
“Hange, was it?” He started walking towards you and your very startled sister.
“U-uh yeah. That’s my name! Listen I had no idea, I’m so sorry. I would have said something obviously but-”, they take a deep breath. “I’m sorry. What’s your name again?”
“Erwin Smith. There is nothing to apologize for as I can only assume there’s only one blame to be given. I hate that we must meet under such a circumstance, but it is truly nice to meet you.” He raises a hand waiting for a handshake.
Hange takes it after a second of processing, shaking the hand vigorously with both hands.
“Well, unfortunately it is what it is. I’m sure Carly and I will be speaking soon. I’m assuming she’s not just hiding back there.” They flick their gaze to the back door he had just come through.
“Ah well, yes. Long gone... how long were you two...?”
“Only like, 3 months or so. You?”
He flinched at that and murmured, “3 Years.”
Thinking back to her comment not 10 minutes ago, Hange bit their cheek.
“Oh man I’m so sorry.”
“No, please. It’s alright. None of this is yours or my fault. We couldn’t have known, but now we do.” Erwin chuckled to himself. You wonder if he’s trying to save face the way your sister did. His gaze now shifts to you. He is a very handsome man. To your extreme surprise, he starts signing to you.
‘I'm sorry, who might you be? I noticed you signing earlier. I know a little from the books I have read.’ His crystal blue eyes sparkle at you as he signs. You can’t help but break out into a huge grin. You sign your name back and compliment him on his raw signing form.
‘I am of hearing, though. So please feel free to talk, and I will sign back.’ You clarify to Erwin, the smile not falling from your face.
“That sounds like a plan. Levi, stop hiding behind the counter and come say hi.” Erwin calls out, not bothering to look over his shoulder. You hear a grunt in response and not 10 seconds later, the barista stands cross armed next Erwin. He nods a hello to each of you.
You knew he was shorter than you, at least a couple inches, based off the interaction at the counter earlier. But seeing him side by side with his friend was almost comical. But as short stature as he was, it did not keep him from holding himself with such authority. It made you nervous.
‘Thank you for the tea, it was very good.’ You sign, your sister translating in real time for you.
“Tch, are you sure? I saw you dump enough sugar in it to make it syrup.” Levi retorts dryly.
That makes you smile sheepishly. His fixated stare unnerved you a little, but you stare back regardless. Now that he was closer, a glass case no longer between the both of you, your eyes traveled along his face in close inspection.
He’s beautiful, you think to yourself. His features are sharp and angled. Steely gray eyes pronounced a permanent exhausted look. It was a shade of gray you’ve never seen before, and they were mesmerizing. As if he could feel you staring holes in his face, he flicks his eyes to the side, clearly uncomfortable. But you can’t help it, because really the most intriguing thing about him was not his metallic eyes. It was the scars that marred his porcelain skin.
A couple of scars ran down the right side of his face. The prominent of the two trailed from the top right of his forehead all the way down to his chin, cutting into his right eye and both lips. You’re pretty sure his eye was quite damaged due to the slight muted discoloration of the eye color.
He’s beautiful, you repeat to yourself. You glance over to Hange, and they just look over at you with a knowing look. You know she was just begging to ask Levi too, but she just shakes her head. So, you fold your hands together and pinch your lips together.
“Well!” Hange yells out, breaking the silence. “This human really needs a drink. Let’s all go! Erwin, I demand you let me treat you to a couple drinks!” She wraps an arm around your shoulders and laughs.
“A drink sounds fantastic; I will gladly take you up on that offer. Let me just close up rea-” He’s cut off by Levi raising both of his hands up in protest. You notice the two missing fingers on his right hand. The pointer and middle were gone. Whatever this man went through, you just had to know. But you toss those questions onto an ever-growing pile and bite your cheek.
“Erwin, I can close up. You go ahead.” Your sister just smiles widely and practically jumped up and down. The blonde man just clapped his hand Levi’s shoulder and smiled at him.
“Thank you. You’ll join us after? The usual place?” Levi just shrugs his shoulders in response.
Part of you hoped he would. You couldn’t place a singular reason why though.
.
Fifteen minutes later, the three of you found yourselves in a well-lit and very crowded bar. Somehow Erwin had snagged a table near the back wall. Heavy rock blares loudly from a live band maybe 20 feet away. Overwhelming was an understatement, but you grit your teeth and sit down on one of the stools.
“Whatcha want, my darlings?!” Hange yells over the music, slapping both hands down on the table and staring at the both of you.
“Whiskey neat, whatever they offer is fine.”
You sign the words ‘apple’ and ‘juice’ followed by a ‘thank you’. You’ve never been one for a drink. While it was tolerable to be around, you’d rather not have to taste it if you could help it.
Looking around, you see all manners of people surrounding you. Something about it makes your stomach turn but you shift in your seat to quell it down. You’re sure it’s only so crowded because of the prospect of a Friday night and the promise of no plans the following day. The town of Jinae was not anything special, but it was quaint. You and your sister found out quickly it was a place where everyone knew mostly everyone. After only settling down here from your hometown 5 months ago, you were still learning of all the local spots.
From the looks of it, this bar was one of those. “The Scouts” was an inviting place, decorated with dark greens and wood tones. The walls were littered with many frames of a lot of different people. You imagine it might have been local residents in various locations of the town. All of the wood was worn down, so it was clear this place has been in business for a while. A neon sign hangs above the stage where the live band played, something that resembled blue and white wings. It makes you wonder what the significance is.
Your thoughts are disturbed as a glass is placed in front of you. Realizing the dryness in your throat, you pick up the glass and take a big swig of the amber liquid. You’re met with a burning sensation, and you gag. This alerts Hange of the unfortunate mistake.
“Ah I’m sorry my little strawberry!! They do look quite similar though, don’t they?” They switch the glasses quickly and laugh. You notice the very noticeable cup size differences between the two and you stare at her quizzically. “I may have taken a shot while at the bar, sorry.” she adds on. It makes you shake your head, but you grab her hand reassuringly and chuckle.
‘I’m sorry.’ You sign at Erwin, and he just smiles back.
“Not a problem. But I have to ask, how was it?” A bushy eyebrow raises at you in amusement.
You just stick your tongue out and make a gagging gesture at him. You laugh though, not really upset.
Two apple juices in, the live band ends. Hange and Erwin are very deep in conversation, which you suspect might be about Carly. You can’t really hear what’s being said though. With the absence of music, chatter quickly fills the air. Honestly it was really starting to get to you. So, after tapping on the pair’s shoulders and signing where you were going, you find yourself leaning over the guard rail just outside the bar’s door.
The sun was already far gone. A crescent moon sits high in the sky and a smatter of stars surrounds it. The cold air felt very welcome on your very flushed face. You exhale a big sigh, which garners a puff of steam. It makes you laugh so you do it again. Then you start to wonder how long you might be able to last out here before getting frostbite when suddenly a body starts leaning against the rail next to you.
With a start, you whip your head to face the newcomer. Instantly you relax at the sight of Erwin’s friend. He was adorned in a big peacoat and his casual slacks. A tan turtleneck sweater peaks out from the jacket’s collar. His face was flushed as well, no doubt from the cold.
Levi.
He wasn’t paying you any mind though, instead his gaze laid upon the sky above, at the stars. You wave at him anyways and offer a small smile. He glances at you with a side eye and returns a curt nod.
Not one for words.
So, you both stand there in silence, staring up at the twinkling lights above. It wasn’t uncomfortable in the slightest. Something about his presence radiated a sort of calm, and you were happy to bask in it.
After a few minutes, he shifts his weight in your direction, so you face him. He’s staring up at you and it makes you swallow hard. His eyes glowed silver from the moonlight. Truly you have never been this fascinated with a person until now.
“You like the stars.” It wasn’t a question, more like a statement.
You nod in agreement, smiling to emphasize your love for them. He purses his lips at that. It seemed as if he wanted to say something else to that, but nothing came out. It just makes you frown a bit. You just have more questions that keep piling up. Everything about him just emanated mystery and it made you want to know all about him.
‘Are you okay?’ You sign to him, exaggerating your frown to show your concern. You’re only met with a look of confusion. You forget that he does not know much if any sign. And you kick yourself for leaving your communication tools at home. To be fair though, this is not where you expected to be tonight.
You then get an idea to use your phone to type to him but before you even reach into your pocket, you’re interrupted by a sudden blast of warm air as a couple stumbles out of the bar, both in a giggling fit as they cling to each other. They take off down the road, laughing even harder. The brief warm air makes you shiver, reminding you of the cold outside.
As if thinking the same thing, Levi catches the door before it closes and holds it open for the both of you. You’re suddenly well aware of the very loud singing happening from within and your eyes widen at the familiarity of one of the voices. You and Levi make your way to the voices and are greeted with the sight of Erwin and Hange duetting a Backstreet Boys song.
What a sight it was. The tall brunette, face flushed and glasses askew, had their arm around Erwin. He his blonde hair was quite tousled, and he looked like he was having the time of his life. They both swayed together as they belted out the lyrics. As if their smiles were contagious, you felt yourself grin. It was kind of cute. So, you pull out your phone and snap a quick picture, sure to show Hange in the morning. It was a good thing too, because the song ends right as you put your phone away in your bag. Levi clicks his tongue and huffs. You glance over at the noise and notice a small upturn to the corner of his scarred mouth. Noticing your gaze, his face vacates itself from any emotion as he stares back ahead.
“Oi! Eyebrows!” He calls out to his friend. Levi starts making his way to the stage, walking with a slight limp. Yet another question to add onto the pile. “I’m gone for 45 minutes and you’re already singing.”
“I’m fine! Just a couple drinks in.”
You all make your way to the table you had laid claim to earlier. You survey the table and count at least 6 more glasses, not counting your two. It was hard to see who drank what.
‘Are you okay?’ You sign to your sister, concern etched on your face. They just nod lazily and give a thumbs up with both hands. Levi is regarding you with a look of understanding, and it seems he realized that you had asked him outside.  Music starts playing over the speakers again, and people start making their way to the dance floor. Hange squeals and downs the rest of her drink quickly.
“Erwin let’s go!” She grabs his arm, not waiting for a response. He gives a mock salute to the two of you and follows without question. Levi just clicks his tongue again and heads to the bar to get himself something. So, you plop yourself down on the stool and stare out into the room. Out of nervous habit you start fidgeting with the napkins in front of you. A moment later, Levi’s hobbling over with a tray of drinks.
“I got the idiots some water, they look like they need it.” He places the glasses down with a thud, including one of his own housing some sort of caramel liquid. Then he’s sliding something over to you and you’re about to protest that you don’t drink but you realize it’s not a glass. It’s a notepad and pen.
“If you need something, this might come in handy.” is all he says.
You’re quick to show your appreciation with a bright smile. You also note to yourself that you could have very well have used your phone to communicate but you were not one to disregard someone’s thoughtfulness. It makes something bloom in your chest, warm and comforting.
Your many years of not having a phone of course meant writing – a lot. Your handwriting evolved plenty with time so that meant it was extremely neat. It had to have been so that the reader would be able to read it without an issue.
First you write your name, as you realize no one had really said it out loud while at the teashop. Following that you add ‘I think your shop is wonderful, and I really did enjoy the tea you made.’ You also want to jot down the questions from earlier that were still swimming in your mind, but you hold yourself back. You tell yourself maybe later, granted if there would even be a later.
When angling the paper so he could see it, his eyes flit across the words quickly and you’re given a grunt in acknowledgement. Pulling back the notepad, you bite the inside of your cheek. While it wasn’t awkward being next to him, he sure made it hard to talk to. His cold demeanor gave you the feeling he wasn’t the type to talk about himself, especially with someone he just met. So, asking questions about him or his life was out the window. Likewise, he did not really seem interested in hearing your life story, not like you were planning to spill it anyways for fear of being met with disdain. You had plenty of experiences with that growing up.
Tapping the pen against your chin, your eyes drift around the bar room. There a multitude of people lingering about, shouting over each other to be heard. A couple sits in a corner, whispering who knows what to each other. Both of their cheeks are flushed and eyes heavy with lust. A handful of people are on the dance floor grinding away, your sister and new friend sticking out like a sore thumb as they dance with reckless abandon. All of this gave you an idea, remembering something you’ve read before many moons ago. You start scrawling on the paper again.
‘Are you a gambling man, Levi?’
You shift the pad back over to him and he glances down again after taking another sip of his spirit. He was holding his glass in a way you’d never seen before and honestly it was a little weird.
“Tch, hardly. Why do you ask?” He looks hard at you as you scratch something else down.
‘I propose a game to pass the time. Let’s make some bets about the random people in this room.’
He looks at you incredulously. You stand your ground, not averting your gaze even a little. When you don’t back down, he just scoffs and shakes his head at you.
“I literally could not care less about these people,” he clicks his tongue. “But I suppose there’s not much else to do so I’ll bite.” Knocking back the rest of his drink, he moves around you to lean back against the wall so that he is facing the rest of the crowd. You shift so that you are doing the same. You don’t overlook the proximity to the shorter man, nor the fact that your arms are almost touching. You start to scribble once more.
‘Winner gets to ask the loser one question.’ As his eyes fall on your words, he seems a little taken aback. Levi seems to think for a moment, like he’s weighing his pros and cons.
“One non-personal question.” He amends. You both nod in agreement. So, your eyes travel around the room, looking for your first target. It falls on a group not so far away.
‘I bet that gaggle of young girls over there are here for a bridal party.’
You point in the direction of the said group. Currently they were taking tequila shots, lime and all. All of them sparkled and were dressed up to the nines, save for the silly little hats adorning their heads. And they were having so much fun.
“No way,” Levi scoffs, “That has to be a 21st birthday. They all look like babies.”
Suddenly someone comes through a parting in the crowd with a tray of assorted colorful drinks garnished with cute little accessories. They all yell in excitement at the sight. One of the girls raises her glass and starts shouting.
“To Estelle! May your married life be full of infinite love, happiness, and orgasms!” They all cheer and take big gulps of their drinks, followed by more giggling.
Levi glances art you, his gray eyes dull in the dim bar light. An eyebrow lifts at you as well.
“How did you know?”
You do a sweeping gesture starting from one shoulder down to the opposite hip. He looks back over to the women and conveniently the soon-to-be-bride had faced your direction. She was indeed wearing a white sash sporting the word ‘BRIDE’ in bright pink letters. He huffs as he rolls his eyes, and you smirk at him in return. You press the pad over to him, already equipped with your question.
Levi scoffs at your question. As promised, it wasn’t very personal. You figured ice breaker like questions were a good start. But his pause made you question if this was a good idea, you didn’t want to run him off or make him uncomfortable. Then he clicks his tongue, and his face softens ever so slightly.
“My favorite hobby, huh? It would have to be cleaning.” He simply states.
Cleaning?
‘Like mopping, dusting, all that jazz?’
“Yeah, it brings me peace. I like the control. Plus, I can't stand filthy things, people, or places. It’s repugnant.” He scrunches his nose at the last statement. A laugh bubbles up and you can’t help but let it loose. You’re shot with a glare and a sharp tone.
“Funny?”
You shake your head no and smile lightly while your hands move adeptly on the pad.
‘Not funny, just amusing because it’s not something I would have expected. It’s different. If it makes you happy then it is an admirable hobby.’
Levi’s looking away from you now. If it wasn’t so dim, you would have seen there was a light dusting of pink color his cheeks and ears. He clears his throat and scans the room for his victim. His eyes land on the couple in the back corner whispering to each other. He notices their not-so-subtle hand movements as they felt each other up. Nodding in their direction, he looks back over to you, leaning close so you can hear.
“I bet that couple will get up in the next 3 minutes and excuse themselves to somewhere private.” Your eyes travel in that direction, only to look away hastily at such an intimate scene. You’re not able to think of a counter-bet because honestly, you’re thinking the same thing. Your eyes settle back to his face, but he’s already looking back at the couple. If he noticed you staring, he didn’t say. Suddenly his face is filled with a satisfied look, only to be replaced quickly with a look of horror. You follow his gaze again, afraid of what you might see.
Fortunately, it’s nothing risqué, as you catch the tail end of the couple slipping into one of the public, unmarked restrooms. But the thought of their future actions was enough to gross you out. Looking back at Levi, you scrunch your face up in disgust. He nods in understanding.
“This is why we don’t use public restrooms, especially in a bar.” He pinches the bridge of his nose with his good hand. “When I said somewhere private, I meant like a residence or something. Filthy animals, unbelievable. They better scrub that bathroom down. Maybe I should tell the bartender when they’re done. Maybe I should help clean.”
His retorts crack you up, your shoulders bouncing from silent laughter. He just stares at you impassively as he runs his fingers through his hair to get it out of his face.
“Well, it’s not like we should ruin their fun. Anyways I suppose I won. Let’s see... what’s your favorite color?”
You part your lips, dumbfounded. This was never an easy question, as you found joy in a lot of different colors. You bite your lip and start writing, but after a couple minutes Levi rips the pad from your hands out of impatience.
salmon
turquoise?
canary yellow!
orange
dark forest gre-
He just looks at you in alarm.
“Just pick one.” he scolds.
You snatch the pad back and scribble down, ‘It’s not that simple!’
“It is to me. White, easy.” You just stare right back at him, not believing what you just heard. Out of all the many shades and hues out there, this man decides the color white.
‘Why?’
“It’s clean.” is the only response you get.
It makes sense, you think. But seriously, this man was so weird. But like you said earlier, it was different and that made it refreshing to you. You start searching for your next bet.
As if in a scene from a movie you’ve seen a dozen times came to life, your eyes snap to a lone woman sitting at the bar, nursing a drink and playing on her phone. A couple seats down, you spot a few men chatting. One of the men is staring hard at the very oblivious woman. You nudge Levi with your elbow, not unnoticing the slight flinch from your touch. You point to the scene, and he is quick to understand.
“I bet when he walks over to her, she’ll get up and leave.” He says confidently.
Trusting your instincts, you scrawl back quickly as you notice the man started making his way towards the woman. Sticking your tongue out at him, you angle the pad to him so he could see.
‘Absolutely not. She’ll tell him off right away.’
To both yours and his surprise, not one moment later she throws the rest of her drink contents onto the man’s head. She gathers her belongings, throws a wad of bills on to the bar, then stomps out of the establishment. The rejected man staggers back to his friends, and they applaud him for his supposed gall. This event left you both stunned. There’s a moment of pause where you and Levi just stare at each other before all hell breaks loose as he starts talking and you start scribbling furiously.
“She walked away, I win.”
‘She threw that drink on him, that’s practically telling him off. And that happened before any walking off.’
“That hardly counts, no words were used.” He scoffs and folds his arms across his chest as he stares hard at you. You weren’t sure if the indignation was real or not, but it was evident in his face.
‘Words are not always needed to convey intent.’ You shoot back at him, shifting your weight to tap your foot defiantly. You would know this of course.
This makes Levi pause. He opens his mouth to say something but then Erwin and Hange came crashing into the little bubble you two had made. Suddenly the sounds of clinking glasses and mindless chatter came rushing in and you took a step back.
“Um, I think Hange might have had a little too much tonight.” Erwin says, to which your attention is drawn to a very drunk Hange. They were a blubbering, sobbing mess. Whining about things that ranged from Carly to her work stress and everything in between. Your sister rarely got this drunk, but you imagine the events from earlier might have been her breaking point. This was a sign to get her home.
You hastily round the table to wrap her arm around you and prop her up. Then after whipping a $20 out of your purse and throwing it on the table in front of the boys, you give them a grateful smile and sign to Erwin.
‘Thank you both for tonight. She and I had a lot of fun. But I need to get her home before she gets worse.’ As if on cue, they let out a loud wail and start sobbing into your shoulder. You shift your body to hold them closer so that you don’t drop them. Erwin grabs your $20 and shoves it back in your purse before zipping it up. He had left you no time to protest as he places a large hand on your shoulder and stares intensely at you.
“Please, let me take care of this. Tell them this was an exceptional time. And to please stop by the café again, we owe each a good, sober talk.” His bright blue eyes crinkled in the corners as he smiled at you warmly. “It was a pleasure meeting you too. I hope you join Hange on the café visits as well. I think Levi has warmed up to you just nicely.” He wiggles an eyebrow at his friend. Levi just shoves him back and rolls his eyes.
“Tch, fuck off. She’s alright, I guess.” He’s staring at you now, not as cold as before. “You owe me an answer next time we meet.”
You purse your lips at him and shake your head in disagreement.
‘I totally won that, don’t even think otherwise.’ You jot down lazily on the notepad still on the table. It wasn’t as neat, but you were propping up a whole human, you couldn’t help it.
“Are you sure you’re safe to get home okay? We can he-” You cut Erwin off with a wave of the hand. Their spot of choice was actually very lucky, as you only live a few minutes away. And to be honest, you needed the cold air. So, you sign a quick goodbye to your new friends and make your way out.
Walking down the snowy sidewalk, you pat Hange’s head as she grumbles about random things. She opted to walk herself, but you kept your hand in theirs to lead them in the right direction. She only stumbled a few times but overall, you were able to keep a steady pace. You note that before you left, her glass of water had been untouched, so you make a mental reminder to hydrate her before throwing her in bed.
‘Alcohol was not kind to those in their 30s’ you heard their voice say in the back of your mind.
As your steps left crunching noises in their wake, you peer up at the moon and glittering stars. A certain raven-haired and silver-eyed man etched in your brain. You wonder how soon it will be before seeing him again.
‘Levi’ you sign to yourself with a free hand. A smile cemented to your face the whole way home.
There’s a voice. No, multiple voices calling out to you through the fog. You can hear them, just above the noise in your head. The more you focus, the more you realize that there are two distinct calls of your name. They sound almost frantic, pleading with you to wake up.
Wake up!
Just wake up!
A shuddering gasp escapes your lips as you sit upright in bed. Your chest heaves, feeling fresh tears lingering on the skin of your cheeks as you bring your hands up to rub at your eyes.
Softly, you can feel two hands caressing your back. One strokes over your upper spine while the other rests much lower, thumb stroking tenderly against your skin.
“Shhh, Darling, it’s okay,” Jongho’s soothing voice reaches your ears. Nothing but worry is reflected on his features as he shares a glance with the other male to your right.
“We’re right here, Dearest,” Yeosang whispers, noticing how with each breath you take you seem to be calming down, even if only the slightest. “She can’t hurt you anymore.”
The sound of your bedroom door flinging open causes you to jolt lightly in their arms, all three of your gazes being drawn to the now open doorway to see both Mingi and Yunho hastily entering the room. Seonghwa follows close behind, San a mere step behind him as worry pulls at all of their features.
Before any of them can ask what happened, you’re speaking. “Bad dream.”
For the past four days, you’ve been tormented by night terrors. Visions of what happened to you swim through your mind, and usually, any one of them are able to shift your thoughts onto something more peaceful in order to let you rest. Only this time, they couldn’t.
No matter how hard Yeosang and Jongho tried, they couldn’t reach your mind. All they could do was watch as your dream tormented you with your past memories of Miyeon torturing you in that damn chair. Except, whenever the eight of them were supposed to show up in your dream, they never did.
Shifting slightly on the bed, Jongho pulls you into his lap. Gently, he cradles you in his arms as Yunho comes to sit on the edge. Carefully, the elder of the two places a hand onto the side of your face, nothing but concern tugging at his brow.
The arms you have wrapped around Jongho squeeze him tighter, eyes falling shut as fresh tears cling to your lashes.
“Every time-“ you begin, voice small and barely above a whisper as you swallow the dryness clinging to your throat. “Every time I close my eyes, all I can see is her.”
“Baby,” San immediately sits on the end of your bed with Mingi right beside him as Seonghwa moves closer to you.
“It’s like she’s living inside my head, and I don’t know how to get her out,” your whole body begins to tremble lightly as a tear slowly begins to make its way down the side of your cheek. “And I know I’m safe now. I know you’re all here with me, and will do everything in your power to protect me, but trying to reason with myself just isn’t working. The harder I try to rationalize with these thoughts, the worse it gets, and I just-“ you turn your head away from Yunho, burying your face into the side of Jongho’s neck as you hold him tighter. “I don’t know what to do.”
No longer can you hold back the desperate sobs that wrack your entire body. You feel completely and utterly devastated inside, every single event of the past week catching up to you. Your mind is a wreck, and you physically don’t feel any better, either. Yes, they’ve been there with you every step of the way, but even with their constant reassurance and support, you still feel lost.
How one woman could so easily come in and tear down every single wall you had built around yourself for protection only adds to the emptiness you now feel. Despite their protection, the worst part for you is that you now feel as if you cannot protect yourself, which is far worse than anything else.
You hate feeling powerless. You hate letting people have control over you.
Jongho’s arms are wrapped tightly around your figure, keeping you pressed against his chest as you continue to sob into his neck. Softly, he coos sweet, comforting words into your ears, both Yeosang and Yunho brushing over your back lightly with their hands.
The six of them share a look. A look full of worry, but also, silent understanding.
“Petal,” Yunho’s soft tone draws your attention to him once your sobs have quieted down for a brief moment. “Do you-“ he clears his throat as he meets your tear filled gaze, “do you want one of us to take the pain away?”
It’s slight, but your whole body tenses within Jongho’s hold.
Seonghwa sits on the edge of the bed, right beside Yunho. His gaze reflects nothing but concern as he looks at you softly.
“We can numb the memories so they’re not as difficult for you to remember,” he says gently. “If you’d rather forget them, we can do that, too.”
“We just don’t want you to suffer because of her anymore,” San adds, keeping his voice low as he watches you being held in his brother’s arms.
“I won’t lie, I have thought about it before.” You avert your gaze almost shamefully, voice barely above a whisper. “To have one of you sever the emotions I feel whenever I even so much as think about what happened to me.”
“But you haven’t.” Yeosang observes, hand continuing to stroke lightly over your back.
You turn your head to meet his gaze. “I can’t.”
You can see the question forming on his lips, and you’re sure the other five are all thinking the exact same things. So, before they can ask, you’re speaking once more.
“As much as I want to, I cannot ignore my own trauma,” you say. “If I ever-“ you let out a long exhale through your nose, “if I even want to begin to process it, I have to acknowledge it. Having one of you make me forget, or simply becoming numb to the emotions feels like I’m taking an easy way out. It’s not fair to myself, or you. I don’t expect you all to take away all of my bad memories as soon as they happen. I can’t, and I won’t.”
“Alright, Starlight,” Mingi nods subtly. “As long as that is what you want. We just thought we’d offer.”
Your eyes flutter closed as a sense of calm begins to wash over you seeing as you’ve managed to calm down for the moment. Slowly, you curl yourself closer into Jongho, letting out a small hum in acknowledgement. “I appreciate that, Min. I appreciate all of you.”
The hold Jongho has around your body tightens ever so slightly.
“What can we do, then, Darling?” He whispers lowly into your ear, chin resting lightly on your shoulder. “What can we do to help make it better?”
You’re quiet for a moment as you ponder over his question.
“I-“ you sigh, eyes falling to the pillows on the bed behind him. “I don’t know."
A brief pause.
“Let me think about it, okay?” Your soft voice fills the room once more just as both Wooyoung and Hongjoong appear. The two males had been out scouting for Dimitri and Malik for the evening, only to sadly find nothing of either of them. “I’ll probably have some better ideas in the morning, but for now, I just really want to sleep.”
“Alright, Darling,” slowly, Jongho begins to lay you back down beside him on the bed.
Immediately, Yeosang is wrapping himself around your back, pulling your body into his arms so that you’re pressed right up against his chest. Much to Jongho’s annoyance.
“I don’t-“ you close your eyes, curling into the two males on either side of you. “I don’t want to have another nightmare.”
“Would you like one of us to-“
“Yes,” you cut Hongjoong off before he can even finish his question, “please.”
The eight males all share a look, silently debating on who will be the one to give you pleasant dreams for the rest of the night, watching over your mind the whole time.
“Sannie,” your voice calling his name draws all of their attention.
“Yes, Baby?” Immediately, his eyes are locked on your figure, ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice for anything and everything you might need.
“Don’t make me chase you out with a bat this time.”
You feel Jongho chuckle slightly against you, his chest shaking as he recalls the way you made him summon you a bat to ‘bash San’s kneecaps in’ with the one time he tried to invade your dreams. Looks like his brother is getting a chance to finally redeem himself.
“I promise you won’t have to this time, Baby,” he chuckles lowly, already focussing on protecting your mind and filling it with the sweetest images for you to fall asleep to this evening.
“Good,” you hum, eyelids already drooping as a wave of tiredness washes over you. “I trust you.”
Almost as soon as those words leave your lips, you’re out like a light. Your chest rises and falls evenly, breaths coming steadily with each inhale you make.
For once, your mind is silent, filled with nothing but soft images of your favourite animals surrounding you and making you feel safe. Softly, a smile tugs at the corner of your lips, and for the first time in days, you finally manage to sleep through the night.
Morning comes, and you actually feel a little better than you have been lately, considering your mood over the past few days. Luckily, thanks to San, Jongho, and Yeosang, you slept much better last night, feeling more rested as you slowly wake up.
Going about your morning routine is second nature to you, not even focusing in on what exactly you’re doing. Still, you manage to take a quick shower to freshen up, getting ready for the day shortly afterwards. At least this allows you time to think.
Today is the first day in a week where you’ve decided to put your void back up, even if only for a little bit. It did keep Miyeon out for quite a while, and you could really use some privacy for your thoughts for the moment. Besides, it’ll allow you to properly think out ways that will help you without one of the guys chiming in every five minutes asking if you’re okay.
The way you can still feel one of them brushing tenderly against your void as you do this does cause a small smile to tug at your lips. At the very least, you know they care, and that they will always be here for you, in whatever ways that they can.
Stepping out of the bathroom, you notice both San and Jongho sitting on the one couch in your room. You can tell from the way that they smile at you as soon as you appear that they’ve been waiting for you this whole time.
“I brought some fruit for you, Baby,” San’s eyes never leave your figure the entire time you make your way over to them.
“Thank you, Sannie,” once you reach him, you lean in to place a tender kiss onto the side of his temple.
Reaching down, you grab the bowl of fruit from the table and sit across from them on the opposite couch. Immediately, you curl into the corner, tucking your legs into your side as you pull a pillow onto your lap.
You take a bite of fruit.
“How are you feeling this morning, Darling?” Jongho asks softly, nothing but worry shining within his eyes as he looks at you.
The corner of your lips tugs upwards slightly, a sort of sad nod to your head in acknowledgement. “Better.”
“Good,” he manages to meet your gaze as your eyes dart up to his own. “We’re glad.”
“Thank you, for last night,” you say, taking another bite of fruit before you’re shifting to look at San as well.
“Of course, Baby,” he smiles at you tenderly. “You know we’d do anything for you.”
“We want to help in whatever ways that we can.” Jongho adds, assuring you with a gentle nod of his head.
“I appreciate that more than you know,” you reply. “I just don’t want it to feel like I’m making my problems your own.”
“You know we would never think that.” Mingi’s voice coming from behind you manages to make you jump. “Sorry, Starlight.”
“I’m serious about those bells if you’re going to keep doing this to me,” you shoot him a playful look, noticing how he holds a fresh glass of water in his hand, of which he immediately passes to you.
You share a brief smile as he sits in the chair closest to you between the two couches.
“Baby,” San’s voice is drawing your attention back to him for the moment. “You know you could never burden us with your problems, right? Please don’t ever think that you are.”
You look down at your lap, pushing around the fruit in your bowl.
“We are here for you in whatever ways we can be,” Jongho reminds you. “And if it’s space you need, then we’ll do that, too.”
“Though, some of us may complain a bit more than others,” Wooyoung’s voice coming from the open doorway draws your attention.
“Yeah, and you’ll be the biggest one,” Yeosang follows right behind him, the both of them instantly making their way over to the sitting area where you are.
“I never said that I wouldn’t,” Wooyoung grins, quite literally hopping over the couch to sit beside you before Yeosang can have the chance.
The elder of the two shoots a glare at the younger, stopping only briefly to place a tender kiss onto the side of your temple before moving over to the opposite couch and sitting between San and Jongho.
“We just want you to know that you do not have to go through this alone, Dearest.” Yeosang makes sure to meet your gaze, leaning forward to rest his elbows on his knees so you can know just how sincere he is in his words. “You never have to go through anything alone ever again.”
“Even if you didn’t want to worry us with your problems, I don’t think we’d be able to stop ourselves,” Seonghwa appears, now sitting in the chair opposite Mingi’s at the other end of the table. “Your happiness and wellbeing are our number one priorities.”
“I’m sure you can recall Seonghwa saying that if you hurt one of us, you hurt all of us. Right, My Love?” Hongjoong’s voice coming from your left draws your attention to him next as you nod faintly. Carefully, he sits himself on the arm of the couch opposite you as he meets your gaze. “That also extends to you.”
“All you ever have to do is tell us what you need, Petal, and we will do everything in our power to provide it for you,” Yunho appears, sitting beside Wooyoung on the same couch as you.
Gently, Wooyoung reaches over and places a comforting hand onto your calf resting right beside him.
“Take as much time as you need, Angel,” he makes sure to keep his voice soft as he smiles tenderly at you. “We’ll be right here with you the whole time.”
All you can manage is a nod of your head as you feel your heart swell with fondness and love inside of your chest. Looking around at all of them, you can see the sincerity shining within their eyes. Though, that much is obvious, for you could hear it the whole time in their words. A fact which could not make you happier, or feel their support for you more than in this very moment here in time.
“We’ll get through this,” Wooyoung squeezes your calf gently. “Together.”
You smile softly, gently placing your own hand over his. “Together.”
Eight soft caresses to your mind answer you, allowing yourself to sink further into the comfort this moment brings you with them. The best part is, you believe them. You believe that you can and will get through this, one step at a time.
A brief silence settles around the nine of you as you finish off the rest of the fruit in your bowl. It’s not awkward by any means. In fact, it’s quite comfortable, and allows you time to think of how you want to word your next few ideas to all of them that you’ve been pondering over the last hour or so.
“I’m glad you’re all here with me,” a soft smile pulls on your features as you spare a glance around at all of them.
The eight content rumbles you can hear lightly echo throughout the room only serve to warm your heart even further than it already is.
Reaching forward, you place the empty bowl onto the table, leaning back into your spot soon after.
“I’ve also done some thinking since last night, and I do have a few things to ask of all of you,” you begin, a nervous exhale escaping you as soon as the words leave your lips.
Again, Wooyoung’s hand squeezes your calf reassuringly.
“Anything, My Dear,” Yeosang breathes, leaning forward the slightest bit, just as all of his brothers do.
“I-“ the words die in your throat as you attempt to speak them out loud now. You take a deep breath in, clasping your hands together on top of the pillow still held in your lap. “As I’m sure you’ve all deduced by now, there is nothing I hate more than feeling powerless.”
You glance up from your hands to see them all watching you intently, slight nods to their heads as they wait for you to continue.
“If this is going to work out between all of us, and-“ your voice catches, and you exhale another breath through your nose, “and I am to become your Queen, then I do not want it to be a case where I am solely reliant on all of you to protect me. I want to be able to defend myself, and others, if such a situation calls for it.”
You can hear the way a few of their breaths hitch in their throats around you, but you still do not dare look up from your hands.
“I know it’s asking a lot, and I know I’m still only human, but I need to take at least some form of control back in my life.” You continue. “This is the best solution I could come up with for now. I do not want your own subjects disrespecting you by disrespecting me, or thinking that I am too weak to handle my own.”
“They would die if they so much as implied that you were,” San growls, hearing his brothers rumble out their agreement around him.
“This just adds to my point,” you briefly glance up to meet San’s gaze. “If you all act for me, then it will look like I cannot handle my own. I do not want your subjects to think I own you. We need to appear as a collective. As equals.”
“Always,” Yunho breathes.
“Without question.” Hongjoong confirms, a slight growl to his words.
“Exactly,” you slowly begin to meet their gazes, lifting your head as you begin to gain more confidence the more your speak. “Except, that might be a little difficult for some people to accept if I’m still only a weak little human who cannot defend herself.”
They all share a brief look with one another.
“We really wish you wouldn’t refer to yourself like that, Starlight,” Mingi is the one to voice all of their thoughts, causing you to turn your head to meet his gaze.
“It’s true, though,” you reply bluntly. “I’m not able to do much on my own right now, but if I knew how to defend myself, I might be able to fight back. I mean, it might not make much of a difference against your kind as I am now, but at least I could say that I tried.”
A pause.
“There are ways-“ Seonghwa clears his throat, drawing your attention to him for the moment. “There are ways for you to become like us. If you wanted.”
“You mean…?” You trail off, eyes wide.
“Yes.” Yunho confirms with a nod, clearing his throat in the next second. “We could turn you into an entity like us. A powerful one, too.”
You hesitate, looking around at all of them briefly. “How?”
“It would require you to give us a piece of your soul in exchange for a piece of ours.” Hongjoong explains, a slight tremor to his voice.
At the way you can see them all visibly shaking, realization crosses your features.
“You’ve discussed this before.” Not a question, but a statement of fact.
“Yes,” Mingi breathes, his eyes fluttering shut as he attempts to prevent them from flashing black.
“We will not lie to you, Darling,” Jongho’s voice rumbles out, slightly lower than it was mere minutes before. “It is one of our greatest desires.”
“There is no act more intimate than the merging of souls with the one you love.” Yeosang meets your gaze, and the darkness you can see swirling within his eyes has your breath hitching in your throat.
“It is the ultimate demonstration of vulnerability and trust between souls.” San’s reply is near breathless, his chest rising and falling dramatically as he looks towards you. “You would receive a piece of our life-energy, and in turn, we would receive a piece of yours.”
“But we would never force it upon you,” Wooyoung is quick to add. “Always, we want it to be your choice. Even if-“ he stops himself, diverting his gaze to the table in front of himself as his entire demeanour drops. “Even if you choose to never merge souls with any of us, and you want to remain a human until your very last breath, we would never force such a thing upon you.”
Again, you reach out and place your own hand on top of his, giving him a reassuring squeeze.
“I figured there was some sort of demonic magic thingy you’d all have to at least make me immortal at some point,” you say, and you notice how they all turn to look at you with hope shining within their eyes. “I didn’t realize you’d be able to turn me into one of you.”
“Equals, remember?” Jongho grins, a tension releasing from his shoulders as you smile back.
“Believe it or not, I’ve come to terms with something like this happening a while ago,” you hum, relaxing further into the couch. “I am curious on how it would work, though. Would it have to happen all at once, or would the splitting and merging of my soul eight times simultaneously potentially kill me?”
“It could be done individually over a period of time, or all at once.” Hongjoong confirms. “It’s completely up to you and what you’re most comfortable with.”
“I’m not saying it’s going to happen any time soon,” you hold up a hand slightly in a pause motion. “I just want to understand what I’m committing to before the time comes.”
“We understand,” Yunho responds lowly. “It is a sacred ritual, and once it is done, it cannot be undone.”
You nod. “Now, when you say intimate, how intimate are we talking?”
All eight males share a look.
“What?” You quirk a brow.
“Well,” Mingi clears his throat, “it would connect us in ways we haven’t been before.”
“You’re not telling me it’s some kind of sex ritual, are you?” You deadpan.
At the way their eyebrows all raise slightly, sharing another look between all of them, you blink.
“So, you’re telling me,” you sigh, bringing a hand up to rub at the side of your face, “that in order for this ritual to take place, I either have to fuck all of you individually at separate times, or we all have, what? A giant orgy?”
Both Mingi’s and San’s faces begin to go bright red, the tips of Yeosang’s ears fairing no better. Out of the corner of your eyes, you notice Seonghwa shift in his spot, crossing his legs over one another. Even Jongho cannot hide the way a blush begins to creep up his neck, Hongjoong shifting subtly on the arm of the couch.
Yunho clears his throat.
“If that’s what you wanted, Gorgeous, we’d be more than happy to oblige,” Wooyoung leans in to whisper lowly in your ear.
A shiver caresses your spine as you feel his breath tickling your neck with every low exhale, the hint of a growl lingering in each one.
Slowly, you bring a hand up, using the tip of your index finger to push his cheek away.
“Slow down there, Demon Boy. We’re not there, yet.” Your voice comes out a bit shaky, and they can tell you’re just as affected by the thought as they are for the moment. “I was just asking for curiosity’s sake.”
“So, what I’m hearing is that it’s not a definitive ‘no’,” Wooyoung grins, a twinkle shining within his dark gaze.
You spare a glance at him out of the corner of your eyes. “We’ll see.”
Eight pleased growls reach your ears.
“It’s too soon to be talking about this,” you wave a hand in front of yourself. “Anyways, is that all there is to the ritual then? Just the exchanging of pieces of our souls? No bloodletting, or anything like that?”
A snarl nearly tears itself from Hongjoong’s throat, crossing his one leg over his knee as his whole body begins to heat with the implications of your words.
“Not unless you wanted there to be.” Seonghwa breathes, hands desperately clutching at the arms of his chair for dear life.
“Would you-“ Jongho clears his throat. “Would you be okay with something like that? Just in general?”
“What? Bloodletting?” You quirk a brow, noticing how he nods, a bit eagerly, in response. You smirk. “I might be.”
Eight low growls reach your ears, yet none are as loud as the snarls that tear from Hongjoong’s, Jongho’s, Mingi’s, and Seonghwa’s throats.
“This is not the proper time to be discussing these things,” you wave your hands in front of yourself once more. “We’re getting way too off track here.”
“We’re just asking for curiosity’s sake,” Mingi hums, a hint of a growl to his words as his brow quirks slightly in amusement.
“We can discuss these topics later. At a point where I’m not teetering on the edge of mental distress every half hour,” you say.
“Of course, Dearest,” Yeosang smiles reassuringly at you from across the table. “Please, continue with what you were saying before.”
“Thank you,” you smile back, shifting your legs so that your feet now rest on the floor, much to Wooyoung’s disappointment. “As I was saying, I want you all to train me.” You cross your one leg over the other, extending your arms over the back of the couch as you lean further into the cushion behind you. “Teach me how to fight, and to properly defend myself. I am tired of being the damsel. I am done feeling like I’m powerless. I am ready to become Your Queen.”
Each male can feel the way their breath hitches in their throat at your words. The way you’re sitting, body open and commanding their attention, screams regality in every way, perfectly mirroring your words even if you don’t realize it. A fact which makes their hearts flutter within their chests.
At the way the silence stretches on between you all, you start to worry.
“Even if you don’t all agree, if at least one of you-“
“We’ll do it.” San breathes, successfully cutting you off before you can start to ramble nervously.
“We had already thought about it, anyways,” Jongho admits, a bit eagerly.
“We’re just glad we’re all on the same page,” Mingi grins, eyes crinkling at the sides as you meet his gaze.
“We’d be more than happy to teach you everything that we know, Dearest,” Yeosang draws your attention to him next, a smile on his face.
“As long as this is something you want, we are more than happy too oblige,” Yunho adds, leaning forward slightly in his seat.
“Listen, if we’re going to be spending the rest of our lives together,” you begin, noticing how eight pleased growls sound lowly around the room at your words, “then I also want to be as badass and intimidating as My Kings. None of this ‘sit pretty and let us handle it’ shit.”
“You wouldn’t sit still, anyways,” Seonghwa jokes, a teasing grin tugging at his features.
“Exactly,” you grin back, meeting his gaze. “Besides, I never expect any of you to fight my battles for me.”
“We know, Darling,” Jongho smiles assuringly at you.
“Doesn’t mean we won’t try,” San adds, knowingly.
“Oh, believe me,” you chuckle. “I know.”
Leaning into your side, Wooyoung sighs dreamily, “I can’t wait to teach you all about poisons.”
“Just picturing her holding our weapons of choice is enough for me,” Seonghwa breathes, eyes fluttering shut as he leans further back into his chair.
“You’re telling me,” Hongjoong finally speaks, nothing but a pleasant hum to his lips.
Wrapping your one arm around Wooyoung’s shoulders, your eyebrows raise in amusement. “Need I remind you all that you’ll be training me, not getting a free pass for sexy times.”
“I think you underestimate the power you have, just implying that you want to learn how to wield any one of our weapons of choice, Dearest.” Yeosang’s low tone surprises you the most, considering that you wouldn’t have expected those words to come from him.
“Yeah, any more mental fantasizing, and our youngest here may start drooling,” Mingi teases, receiving a pillow thrown at his face from said man in the next second.
“Like you’re not envisioning the same damn thing.” Jongho grumbles, crossing his arms over his chest.
You giggle, and the sound is like music to all of their ears.
“Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, yeah?” You grin. “There’s still a few things that need to happen first.” A brief pause. “Well, they don’t need to, I’d just like them to.”
“Anything.” Yunho breathes, gaze locking with yours from across the couch.
“This actually leads me to my next request, but I’d like to visit my parents. Preferably tomorrow.” You state, sparing a glance around at all of them. “I need to talk to my mom. She’s always been there for me when I’ve needed her, and it’s been months since I’ve been home. I want to take full advantage of seeing my family whenever I can, for however longer I can. They won’t be around forever.”
“You don’t need to explain yourself to us, Dearest,” Yeosang smiles softly. “We understand.”
“Now that there’s one less threat to worry about, that shouldn’t be a problem,” Wooyoung curls in closer to your side, wrapping his arms around your waist as he hums contently.
“Our wards should still be in tact around your parents house, anyways.” Yunho adds.
“Did you want one of us to go with you?” Hongjoong clears his throat. “As an added protection in case something were to happen?”
You blink. “You’d actually let me go by myself?”
At the way they nod, even if somewhat hesitantly, you huff, clearly impressed.
“And here I was thinking I’d have to fight you guys on it.” You hum, amusedly.
“We never want you to feel like you cannot see your family,” Hongjoong responds. “We know how important they are to you.”
Your heart warms, and you find yourself nodding lightly along to his words.
“Well, I did want to speak with my mom privately at first,” you say. “Then, depending on how things go, I would really like to formerly introduce my parents to the people that I love.”
A collective stillness passes over the room as their eyes shine with nothing but fondness for you.
Wooyoung looks up at you, eyes shining with unshed tears. “You want us to meet your family?”
“Only if you’re all okay with that. I would never want to force you into anything you’re uncomfortable with,” you go on to say, smiling softly down at him. “I also don’t know how well they’re going to take to me being in a relationship with eight men, but I don’t want to keep this from them if I don’t have to. You all make me happy, and I know that’s all my parents have ever wanted for me. I would like for you to meet them.”
“Starlight,” Mingi’s voice trembles slightly with the weight of his emotions, a single tear trailing a path down his cheek.
“We’d be honoured.” Yunho finishes, voicing the thoughts on all of their minds as an overwhelming sense of joy and love swells within their chests.
You smile. A brilliant, shining smile that lights up the entire room as your eyes shine with excitement. “Great! I’ll call my mom later and make sure they’ll be home tomorrow. I want it to be a bit of a surprise.”
“A surprise?” Seonghwa quirks a brow.
“Ironically, Sundays are the days my family spends together. Usually, my sister and her husband come over for dinner, so my mom spends the day cooking. It’s usually a guarantee that they’ll be home, but one can never be too sure.” You shrug, subconsciously beginning to rub your thumb against Wooyoung’s shoulder, much to his content.
“Just let us know,” Seonghwa nods once in confirmation.
“Of course,” you turn your joy filled gaze towards him, and the eldest swears he can feel his heart stuttering inside his chest. “I have a plan, anyways.”
“A plan, you say?” Hongjoong quirks a brow.
“Like I said, it all depends on how things go if and when I talk with my mom tomorrow,” you reply. “I don’t think showing up with eight men right off the bat would be good for either of my parents. Let me test the waters first, and gage their reactions before all of you show up. The last thing I need is to give my parents a heart attack.”
“Alright, Starlight,” Mingi chuckles. “We’re just excited, is all.”
“Either way, we’ll make sure to be on our best behaviour,” Yunho shoots both San and Wooyoung a pointed look.
“Hey!” They both whine at the same time, causing you to chuckle.
“If anyone needs to behave themselves, it’s Handsy over there,” Wooyoung grumbles, burying himself further into your side as he shoots Seonghwa a pointed glare.
“Track record shows you’re in second place in terms of not being able to control your hands, Demon Boy,” you tease, poking his cheek lightly.
Teasingly, Wooyoung attempts to bite at your finger.
“So, really, you can’t blame us,” Seonghwa finishes with a casual shrug, only causing you to laugh once more.
“Oh, believe me, I don’t.” You grin knowingly. “If you knew half of the shit that I’ve fantasied about with all of you, I’m pretty sure my back would have been blown into next week by now.”
Eight snarls greet your ears, their eyes flashing black as their gazes fixate on you.
“Darling, you can’t just say something like that and not tell us more,” Jongho practically moans out as his lips part, heated gaze locked on your figure.
“Well, I guess that’s just something you’ll all have to find out in due time, then,” you giggle, a devious grin pulling onto your lips.
“No fair!” San pouts, crossing his arms over his chest.
“So, you don’t want to know at a later time?” You quirk a brow teasingly at the male across from you.
“We’d just much rather know sooner rather than later, Angel,” Wooyoung’s voice rumbles out, nothing but a low growl as he turns his head to face you.
“And I’m sure you will,” you reply, brushing some of his hair back from his forehead. “I know for sure that I’m not the only one with my own little fantasies.”
At the pointed look you shoot Hongjoong across from you, the male straightens, even if only slightly.
“Anyways,” you chuckle once more, “we’re getting off track again.”
“Can you blame us?” Yunho clears his throat.
You smile at him from over top of Wooyoung’s head. “So, tomorrow, just be prepared to meet my parents.”
“We’ve never been more ready for anything in our entire lives.” Seonghwa admits, voice barely above a whisper.
“I think you’ll all get along with them just fine,” you say, watching as they straighten a bit from your subtle praise. “Though, I’d prefer it if you’d refrain from reading their thoughts.”
“We’ll do our best.” Yunho promises.
“I appreciate that,” you nod, a small upturn to your lips. “I can’t wait to see my dad attempt to intimidate you.”
Their eyebrows raise in amusement.
“Be prepared for these two questions,” you tell them, “one: ‘what are your intentions with our daughter?’. And two: something to do with your occupation.”
“Well, I’m not entirely sure ‘making her the Queen of Our Realm’ would be a sufficient enough of an answer to question one.” Hongjoong jokes, and you find yourself grinning along with him.
“My mom might swoon, but yeah, my dad might not be as impressed,” you laugh. “I’m sure you’ll all think of something. However, if you need conversation topics, my mother is an interior designer, and she loves to cook and bake. My dad, on the other hand, loves music, and is an author.”
“Is that where your love of books comes from?” Yeosang inquires.
“Most likely,” you shrug. “My mom was also the one who taught me to play the piano, so there’s that.”
A slight mewl from your feet draws your attention in the next moment, Kuroo jumping up onto the arm of the couch beside you. Immediately, you bring a hand up to begin scratching at his chest.
“You’ll also get to meet another fluff ball,” you say, noticing how Kuroo looks at you with those big, golden eyes of his. “Don’t worry, Little One, Sammy could never replace you. Though, he is a bigger Monkey than you are.”
A few chuckles sound around the room as Kuroo stands a little straighter on the arm of the couch.
“Unfortunately, you cannot come with us,” you lightly scratch Kuroo’s head, watching as he blinks at you in response. “Listen, if Weserton shows up, you will not be having a good time.”
“Weserton?” Yeosang quirks a brow at you from across the table.
“My sister’s dog.” You clarify, seeing nods of understanding all around.
“Is his name actually Weserton?” San’s brow furrows.
“Oh, no, that’s just what I call him.” You chuckle. “His name is just Wes, but I thought I’d make it fancy and combine it with Bridgerton.”
“What kind of dog is he?” Jongho asks.
“He’s a German Shepard.” You grin. “A fact which my sister will tell you all about.”
The way a fond look begins to shine in your eyes has all of them practically swooning once more. Nothing but tender love and affection fills their gazes as they watch you recount little details about your family, sharing them with all eight of them now.
“Anyways, I probably shouldn’t tell you everything about them before you meet,” you shift slightly, making yourself more comfortable on the couch as Kuroo crawls on top of the pillow still sitting in your lap. “Leaves more to be discovered tomorrow.”
“We appreciate you telling us all that you have, still,” Yunho speaks, voicing his brother’s thoughts for the moment. They can tell that even though you’re excited, you are a little nervous about the fact that they’ll be meeting your family for the first time.
“Again, we promise to be on our best behaviour,” Seonghwa reiterates, sharing a look with all of his brothers around the room.
You nod, that soft smile pulling at your lips once again. “I trust you.”
A comfortable silence settles over the nine of you.
“That’s pretty much all I had for the moment,” you say. “Unless you all had something for me.”
They all share a look, and you do not fail to see the way Jongho, Mingi, Hongjoong, and Seonghwa all shift slightly in their spots. Even Wooyoung turns slightly in your arms, a knowing gleam shining within his eyes.
“I can think of a few things,” Mingi chuckles.
You simply quirk a brow in response.
“Now then,” Jongho breathes, drawing your attention to him for the moment, “on to other important matters.”
“Yeah, like how you gave San one of your sweaters to wear first.” Wooyoung pouts, crossing his arms over his chest as he sits up and out of your embrace.
You shrug, “he said he was cold.”
“Starlight, you know both San and I can regulate our body temperatures at will, right?” Mingi leans towards you, keeping his voice low as a smirk tugs at the corner of his lips.
“No,” you quick a brow amusedly, turning your gaze towards San who is now glaring at Mingi. “I did not.”
“I’m surprised he even took it off,” Yunho chuckles. “He’s been wearing it every day since.”
“More like living in it.” Seonghwa grumbles, crossing his own arms over his chest.
“The only reason he took it off is because he spilt-“
Hongjoong’s words immediately get cut off as San slaps a hand over his Captain’s mouth. A nervous smile rests on his face as your eyebrows raise in amusement.
A look of disgust pulls onto San’s features, a whine escaping his lips as he tears his hand away from Hongjoong’s mouth. Immediately, the younger male starts wiping the palm of his hand on Hongjoong’s thigh, muttering curses about how the elder male licked him all the while.
You laugh, one of your own hands buried within Kuroo’s fur as you notice San pouting in your direction now.
“You know, if you guys want to wear my clothes, you’re more than welcome to-“
The words are hardly even out of your mouth when Wooyoung is flinging himself over the back of the couch and rushing towards your closet, Jongho and Seonghwa not far behind.
“You two,” you point towards San and Mingi, “are not allowed to touch my favourite sweater. Not after the last time.”
“It was an accident!” Mingi attempts to defend himself, lips tugging downwards in the corners.
“I don’t care,” you shake your head back teasingly, eyes wide. “I don’t want to be doing emergency surgery on the sleeves of my favourite hoodie every time you two decide to play tug of war with the material.”
“What are you two? Feral dogs?” Jongho reappears with one of your oversized crewnecks covering his frame, an amused look shining in his eyes as he sits back in his seat.
“Says the one who practically growled at me when I went to reach for the sweater you’re wearing,” Seonghwa muses, one of your many hoodies fitting comfortably over his body as he settles back into his chair.
“I’m surprised nothing else got torn apart,” Yeosang comments, burying the lower half of his face into the neck of the fuzzy jumper he’s now wearing.
“I don’t know, Joong and Wooyoung were fighting pretty intensely over that one shirt,” Yunho hums, reappearing on the one end of the couch wearing another one of your hoodies.
“I swear to everything-“
“Don’t worry, My Love,” Hongjoong reappearing on the arm of the couch in front of you wearing one of your cardigans manages to cut you off. “We figured it out.”
“More like I won,” Wooyoung’s smug voice greets your ears as you turn to see him walking over wearing one of your oversized t-shirts. A large grin rests on his face as he plops himself back down on the couch beside you, immediately leaning into your side once more. “Your clothes are comfy.”
“At least we can all agree on that,” Jongho hums, a collective sigh of bliss escaping all of them at once.
“I didn’t realize how many hoodies you own,” Mingi comments, burying himself deeper into the one he currently wears after sitting back down in his chair.
“It’s cause I only wear the same five in rotation,” you snort. “They are my favourite article of clothing. I think I must have at least twenty in counting.”
“So, what I’m hearing is that we can borrow them at any time?” San grins, appearing on the couch opposite you wearing another one of your cardigans. Only his is done up, with nothing underneath.
“As long as you tell me you’re the one that has it, borrow whatever you want.” You shrug, nonchalantly. Though, at the way you see Wooyoung’s eyes flash, you’re quick to add, “not my underwear.”
“Damn, and here I was thinking we’d get a free pass,” he grumbles, shaking his head teasingly.
“Don’t push your luck, Demon Boy,” you poke his cheek affectionately, feeling him smile against your side as he pulls himself closer into you.
Softly, you begin to thread your fingers through Kuroo’s fur, smiling as you hear him begin to purr in your lap. The affectionate stares you can feel being sent your way has you relaxing into this moment, right here, right now, with all of them. Already, your mind has started to calm down, and you cannot help but revel in this feeling.
Yeah. You could get used to this.
It's me trying to convince y'all to get invested in the Sword Catcher, read it all cause I tried!
1) I need someone to talk about it + see your theories/memes/edits, I NEED MY FRIENDS IN THIS FANDOM okay?!
2) listen, we have to wait about 2 years before The Wicked Powers, let's try to distract ourselves with something exciting!!
Reviews from George Martin (my beloved, listen, this man knows a good fantasy book when he sees one, trust him), Holly Black and Leigh Bardugo
Synopsis (read the full detailed version here):
In the vibrant city-state of Castellane, a young orphan named Kel is stolen from his old life to enter a new one of luxury and peril. He’s to become Prince Conor Aurelian’s body-double, shielding the Prince from all dangers. As his ‘Sword Catcher,’ he and Conor become close as brothers – yet Kel lives for one purpose: to die for Conor.
Lin Caster is an Ashkar physician, part of a community ostracised for its rare magical abilities. But events pull her and Kel together and into the web of the mysterious Ragpicker King who rules Castellane’s criminal underworld.
Together, they’ll discover an extraordinary conspiracy. But can forbidden love bring down a kingdom? And will their discoveries plunge their nation into war and the world into chaos?
Here, a boy lives to protect his Prince with his life. A girl is destined to return lost magic to the world. A Prince must choose between his heart and his duty. And thrumming beneath it all, the heartbeat of a city unlike any other. Welcome to Castellane.
Known characters: (from top to bottom, from left to right, please appreciate the wonderful arts below)
Kellian Saren - our protagonist~ was kidnapped from his family when he was 5 and brought to the palace in order to be the Sword Catcher, the body double for the Crown Prince(🏳️‍🌈?). Used to have a crush on Antonetta, now too busy spending time with Prince Conor (🏳️‍🌈?). Big spoon energy
YOU'LL SAY: Rina... bestie he looks exactly like the second guy a bit lower, why so many Will Herondale cosplayers🤨 YES YES, THAT'S THE POINT, THEY HAVE TO LOOK ALIKE, IT'S LIKE Keira Knightley and Natalie Portman in Star Wars
Lin Caster - female protagonist, doctor, is skilled in healing magic (Catarina & Clary's daughter🤨?). There is a prophecy surrounding her, that says a very powerful goddess would return one day and it would be one of the girls from her community, ~possibly her~
Antonetta Alleyne - Heir to the wealthy silk charter, her mother dotes on her, dressing her in lace and grooming her to marry Prince Conor (the next guy). Her, Kel and Conor used to have this gang😎 when they were kids, but then her mother decided to turn her into a Kendall Jenner and now she's 💅🏻not like other girls💅🏻 and makes this ew sound everytime our protagonist walks by (secretly feels something else towards him....I guess?...)
Conor Aurelian - our Prince🤴🏻definition of: So you're a tough guy, Like it really rough guy, Just can't get enough guy, Chest always so puffed guy. What else? Oh, everyone tries to kill him and he hides behind his boyfriend's back. Little spoon energy
Joss Falconet - some lazy whore, idk. He has been friends with Conor and Kel since they were all small children. He loves parties, a good time, and ridiculous exploits, but there may be rather more to him…Matthew Fairchild core?👀✨ maybe....
The Ragpicker King - he's so 😋😩🤤he lives his dark emo girl aesthetic life. Doesn’t have a name or real identity. He lives in a big black mansion in the middle of Castellane and runs the crime scene. My future husband btw
Merren Asper - part-time student, full-time poisoner, and hopeless romantic. Merren has a dreamy, cheerful personality, despite being a poisoner. Well good for him, god bless🌿 he seems like a mixture of Kit Herondale and Wylan Van Eck
I'm going to update this post in case Cassie shares some new information!
The first book comes out on October 10 THIS YEAR so~ you can pre-order🌟✨for example, I can't so I'll just wait till someone sends it to me once it's out.
I REALLY hope I managed to get you slightly invested. It seems like a really nice fantasy series and I'd like to support Cassie's new work. She gave us our beloved TSC world and I have a strong faith in her. I know it's hard to dive into a new series but let's give it a chance!
