#25 Summation, reflections and plans for 2024

Now that the calendar is over I want to wrap things up with some thoughts and facts about of what have been and what is coming.

The calendar

In this calendar I've written about 24 series that have meant something to me through my life. There are other series I might actually like more than some of them today, but they've all changed how I see things or how I feel about a certain subject. I started of with M*A*S*H, which will always be my all time favourite and which came into my life early. I ended with Julie and the Phantoms, which just recently came into my life and about which I still have a lot to learn. Some posts almost wrote themselves, while others needed some rewatches and reminiscing.

I stream A LOT of media, and mostly series, some weeks up to 40 hours. This because I usually have something on in the background, it makes me focus even better. I work from home about half the time and the TV is always on, on these days. But it's normaly rewatches and comfort series and I have a hard time starting new ones. MONTY had mentioned at casino night that he heard the cops suspected DIEGO - and since Sassa has caught him in several odd situations, including breaking into a professor's office, she is a bit suspicious of him being the one who originally stole the notes from the investigation (that being how he found out about Diego)

MILO had to deal with the downgrade of Sassa as his new doubles partner this year, and she is trying to lull him into trusting her so she can know secrets - his, Greer's, anyones that he is aware of, really.

At Greer's birthday party, Sassa and LINK struck a tentative truce to work together, but because they're both manipulative pieces of shit, it's really a competition to see who can use the other more affectively. With sexual tension.

Sassa had been dating THE NAIVE NEWCOMER before Greer swooped him up last year - this year, with Greer gone, she did make a move again, a fact she is utterly denying since his expulsion/arrest/perp walk

Sassa found a note in the haunted house that said "GREER TRUSTED SOMEONE SHE SHOULDN’T HAVE"

She also manipulated her way through her second sit down with the investigators and made them absolutely believe she was trustworthy

Apparently G agreed, because shortly after leaving, Sassa received a text that asked if she had ever heard about Greer going into the planned parenthood in town

Finally watching Ginny & Georgia, I admit I scoffed at it when it first came up on Netflix but the second season trailer is actually what got me. Love Georgia. Ginny can drop off the title. Just finished season 1 though so Ginny has another season to improve or dive for me (same with Georgia of course).

I love how very real the characters are and many scenes of the teenagers gave me HS flashbacks, except they are never in class so the usual tv writing. Other than that, it was almost too real to be comfortable and I was mostly silent because it was. Ginny is a really good character, she's very teenager and always upset. They just forgot to write in anything for her to be upset about so it's just confusing because I can't wrap my mind on what she's actually unhappy for.

Everyone else is the same. It's very cliche, classic TV. However those aren't reasons I wouldn't watch it.

It's a fascinating blend of teen and adult TV. Usually in teen tv they try to write in some adult drama that falls flat. In adult TV they try to write in some teen drama that falls flat. So far Ginny & Georgia has been the only successful blend of the two I've seen. Even when the teen drama bores me I can look forward to Georgia's story. Even when Georgias story is slow I can be entertained by Ginny and her friends. Plus the lesbian rep, however clumsy, is always a bonus.

It's well written because even when the teen drama is at its height Georgia gives a very good response that unravels the usual tropes and archetypes. Ginny is a teenager with bad influences in her friend group. Of course she doesn't realize she's being ridiculous. I don't expect the show to write that and I get it. I respect it. I respect it because Georgia lays down some truth and reality in the dialogue to tell the audience 'hey we know we are doing this on purpose because she's 16 and not very wise'.

Pretty solid so far. The teen disorderly and drunkenness just puts a bad taste in my mouth. Mostly because I wasn't that way and I went to school with people that, decided it wasn't for me. So personal reasons.

Oh also, I think Max and Abby should date. Perfectly dysfunctional.

Will start season 2 tomorrow.

Currently listening (tag game)

Thanks to @forever-and-almost-always who tagged me to list the five songs I’m listening to right now. This will be so embarrassing for some songs, but I’ll be honest😆

I’ve rewatched season 1 of this iconic series while feeling sick today. It was my favourite series on tv when I was about 12 years old and I vividly remember my little sister and me getting obsessed with mermaids, thinking they are real and playing mermaids in the sea. One good thing though: rewatching this gave me inspiration for my siren Meara Kailani and I can’t wait to live my childhood dream while writing her next scene.

Words cannot express how much I love this musical number performed by Sara Waisglass and Tamika Griffiths in season 2 of the great Netflix show Ginny & Georgia. Watch it!

A true retelling of Cleopatra’s life and achievements. Also a stab at every historian who sexualised her instead of appreciating her intelligence, power and strength.

“The consequence of imagination is fear” is such a true statement and my constant companion while creating art or writing.

secondable hmmm i haven’t rlly been keeping up with new tv shows bc i’m still catching up on popular stuff from the early and mid 2010s when i was too young and/or not living in the west to be aware of pop culture phenomenons like gossip girl and the like. but i will say a show i see get immense hype even to this day is how to get away with murder and while i see the hype and agree abt it in the first 2 seasons, the way this show deteriorates is so infuriating. i love viola davis and i will watch her in anything but htgawm got so sloppy in the third season and onwards.

awlso i’m sorry to my stranger things mutuals but i don’t get the hype….. i tried getting into the show so many times since it blew up 6 years ago but i could never make it past the first 2 episodes, i found it so boring. a lot of netflix originals are like that for me tbh 🧍🏽‍♀️

other shows i see so many ppl talk abt but are either uninteresting to me so i didn’t bother watching them or i gave them a shot and couldn’t be hooked are: outer banks, sex education, ginny & georgia booooo, umbrella academy (adopted siblings being romantic??? girl bye), elite after season 4 akdhaodjs the minute nadia left the show blew up it’s just not worth it idc how many polyamorous couples they add it just don’t hit the same

Husk. I fucking love Husk. For more than one reason, I could talk about him all day. I really do enjoy his personality, I’ve always been a sucker for the harsh exterior personalities when they truly are just caring, broken souls within.

Stolas. My birdy babe. 😭. I seriously want things to go good for Stolas, Blitzø too. Stolas is such a flawed character, but he’s trying, and that’s what tugs my heartstrings. He tries.

Lucifer. ON THE TOPIC OF DEPRESSED FATHERS. “Take that, depression!” Lucifer is my spirit animal, for fucking real. I love him, so much. I love that he cares for Charlie, and that he wants to help his daughter achieve her dreams.

Millie. I would’ve added Moxxie to this list, but I have mixed feelings on him after Happy Campers. But I do adore Millie, mostly because I relate to her.

FIZZAROLLI. Because who doesn’t like Fizz. I fucking LOVE 2 Minutes Notice, and I love that he was able to fight back against Mammon. I’m happy that oh I’m and Ozzie are so healthy for a couple in Hell, and I’m so happy that our king of Lust has helped nurse Fizz back into health.

Sir Pentious. The man stays winning, seriously. I love him so much, and I totally adore him and Cherri. I’m so sad that their time was cut short, but that single kiss was enough to keep me satisfied canonically. Twitter and Tumblr can do the rest..😭

The 12 TV Couples We Really Wanted (But Didn’t Get) in 2023

As 2023 comes to an end and we reflect on the past year in television, we’ve realized something: we don’t like not getting our way. For that very reason, we’ve decided to compile a list of the couples we really wanted this year, even if the TV gods decided to keep them apart.

And let’s be clear, we’re defining a “couple” as two people who have agreed to define their relationship as such. Some of the duos on our list have kissed, and some have done considerably more than that, but they failed to make it official. DTR-ing is very important here, people.

And while we’re confident that some of these shows will eventually give us the couplings we want, our list also includes a few characters whose shows won’t be resuming in the new year, leaving us to wonder what could have been. Consider us haunted for life.

Read on for a breakdown of 12 TV we couples we wanted (but sadly didn’t get) in 2023, then drop a comment with your own additions to the list. Which pairs from your favorite shows are you hoping will finally get serious in 2024?

Janine and Gregory, Abbott Elementary

The elementary teachers are made for each other, and their failed relationships with other people in Season 2 only further confirmed that there’s something truly special about Janine and Gregory’s bond. And honestly, we don’t know how Janine didn’t just dissolve into a puddle when Gregory told her, “I take all of your recommendations seriously. I want to know why you like stuff.” Swoon!

Jack and Sadie, American Auto

Just when the Payne Motors exec decided to throw caution to the wind and agree to a real date with the co-worker for whom she was obviously made (and vice-versa), NBC threw cold water on the would-be couple as well as our hopes for them in the form of a cancellation notice.

Georgia and Joe, Ginny & Georgia

We were sure that Joe’s slow realization of the significant past connection – not to mention, the palpable chemistry – he and Georgia share would finally inch the pair towards each other in Season 2. Alas, she married someone else, but we’ve got our eye on the long game when it comes to these two.

Benson and Stabler, Law & Order: SVU and Organized Crime

‘Shippers have wanted Capt. Benson and Det. Stabler together for literal decades, and it seemed like maybe the show’s writers were on board this year. But despite some heavy flirting and heavier conversations about their feelings, we were left having to “Liv. Laugh. Love.” our way on to the next season.

Lee and Keiko, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters

Since their very first appearance in the series premiere’s 1959 flashback — which hinted at Bill having ended up with the “right woman,” Keiko, that Lee didn’t — we have wondered, “Wait, what all transpired with this triangle of adventurers…?” Add in everything that happens in Episode 6 (streaming Dec. 15 on Apple TV+) and, well, our interest grew Titan-ic!

Nick and George, Nancy Drew

Blame it on final season-induced nostalgia if you want, but we were rooting for George and Nick to get back together before Nancy Drew came to a close. Don’t get us wrong, their respective new partners suit them in unique ways, but we were invested in this couple prior to their breakup. Remember when they almost got married?!

Maeve and Otis, Sex Education

Sure, Sex Education’s will-they-won’t-they it couple may have kissed and even had sex, but the series took far too long to get them together(-ish), before sending Maeve off to the States for school. By the time she returned, the couple’s moment seemed to have passed and in the end, they parted ways for good without ever experiencing the waves of a real relationship.

Spock and Chapel, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

The sizzling chemistry between the Vulcan science officer and the human nurse is absolutely out of this world, and it only got hotter in Season 2, with Spock gallantly using CPR when Chapel was barely clinging to life in the premiere. They even gave into their feelings after Spock was temporarily turned into a human — and shared a kiss! — but alas, Chapel’s decision to leave the Enterprise to take a prestigious fellowship meant that our dreams were dashed for now. Sigh.

Gerri and Roman, Succession

We knew these two were never destined for a traditional romance, something that didn’t really exist on HBO’s corporate drama. But we at least hoped they’d find their way back to the delightfully twisted, sorta-weird-sorta-hot situationship they developed in the show’s first three seasons, which could have softened the blow of Roman’s emotional implosion in Season 4. Alas, Roman was left to drink that series finale martini alone.

Roy and Jamie, Ted Lasso

The increasingly profound bond between AFC Richmond’s former foes was both a complete surprise and such an appealing plot development that we can’t believe we didn’t ‘ship these two from the start. With all due respect to Roy and Keeley’s ill-fated fling, we found ourselves more invested in Roy and Jamie going the beyond-platonic route, after a season of meaningful interactions — Uncle’s Day is ourRoman Empire — that only scratched the surface of what these guys have come to mean to each other. But the finale went a different way, instead pitting Roy and Jamie against each other (?) in a fistfight for Keeley’s love (?!) and then asking her to choose between them (?!?). Well, we’ll always have Amsterdam.

Daryl and Isabelle, The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon

Maybe it’s for the best that the fifth Walking Dead spinoff didn’t capitalize on the chemistry that we all some of us saw developing between young Laurent’s de-facto parent figures. Viewers didn’t seem to agree that Norman Reedus and Clémence Poésy’s characters felt more for one another than mere friendship.

Kat and Elliot, The Way Home

Redemption for the loyal high school best friend who stood by while Kat fell for and married the wrong guy! When Kat returned home after her divorce, her former bestie-turned-adorably handsome teacher Elliot was not only there for her, but also provided guidance, in the present and past, when her teenage daughter discovered a time-traveling pond. That’s what we call a good guy. Plus, that first kiss? Fire! Sadly, the complications of time travel led Elliot to decide he needs to forge his own path forward.

Ginny & Georgia recap - season 1

Spoilers for season 1 of Ginny & Georgia!!

This show is so fascinating to me. It's playing off several different tropes and themes of TMS (teenager murder shows), parent/teen dramas (does this need an acronym lol?), YA as a genre (whoops that's an acronym), etc. Everything is put into a blender and then WHIZZ out comes Ginny & Georgia!

I have a thought... you know how one of the rules of the romance genre is the happy ending? I wonder if one of the rules of TV more broadly is a neat ending. Where there are maybe 1-2 loose ends but for the most part everything gets buttoned up. Of course, neat endings are prevalent in a lot of other mediums, too. And with G&G, the neatness of the ending is only really related to Georgia not going to jail for financial fraud and murder. Who knows what is going to happen to the kids!

Anyways.

I was hoping for more murder, and we got one more body, so that's fun. I was kinda hoping that Carolyn would get more maligned. Losing the mayor's election... eh. That wasn't enough for me! But I appreciated the extra depth with the scene at home where we saw her husband.

I've been thinking more about the appeal of TMS and I think part of the no responsibility bit involves financial freedom, which means either 1) the characters start off rich, 2) the characters do crime to get rich, or 3) the characters are around people with some semblance of stability and they can do crime/do drugs/be fuck-ups and still eat and all that. In G&G, it's mostly 2 - do crime to get rich. And WOAH there is so much crime. I was honestly shocked by Georgia stealing from the city. That's so risky -- and frankly implausible, unless your city is truly incompetent and not reviewing the financial books regularly?? I enjoy the way the show mixes different types of crime. It makes you constantly question your sympathies for Georgia!

There's more to say... I'll just fire things off now:

Austin is probably a psychopath... hate to say it as he's just a little kid, but good god there are red flags everywhere with that one

The voiceovers give strong Veronica Mars vibes, which I appreciate

Ginny is a bitch but I feel bad for her, her friends are forgiving but even she pushed them too far. Running off with your brother is questionable.

Side note, I am reading a novel right now where the lead says you shouldn't use gendered insults b/c they're lazy... I dunno.

The proposal scene between the Mayor and Georgia was fantastic, really took me by surprise! Also, I loved when Zion was looking into this camera during the rally/community fair scene and realized what he was looking at. Maybe too on the nose, but if you're going to be that sincere about something, might as well follow through!

Poor Hunter. He was absolutely a great boyfriend.

Marcus is borderline creepy, like the love interest whose name I forget in... that movie with Winonna Ryder where the school blows up? It was turned into a musical? I'm not going to google. Also, I appreciate the efforts to make Marcus look like a 15 year old where the actor is in their mid-twenties. They did a good job, though I'd still peg him for late teens.

What's the name for a woman who consistently murders her husbands for money? I swear there's a distinct name for it but I cannot remember if for the life of me.

MANG is fun. Abby breaks my heart! Maxine is a delightful mess. Norah avoiding her friends b/c her mom betrayed her to hurt Ginny's family/the mayor was interesting.

This show is such a soap opera!
