Every time Zagreus dies, he leaves behind a body. Someone has to clean up behind him. For a small fee, of course.

For some reason, I invented an October ficlet challenge for myself. These ficlets will all take place in the same continuity, but can be read standalone without missing much context. I’ll be posting two every week until Halloween, assuming I can get them written in time. Happy spooky month!

1. A Profitable Death

Summary:  Charon has a new business idea. No, a different one.

It was lucky that Charon was among the first to hear about Prince Zagreus’s attempts at escape. Lucky for him, because it meant he could set up shop and start making a little obol on the side before most people in the House of Hades even noticed Zagreus was missing. By the time Mother Nyx’s pleas to Olympus were answered, Charon had already gathered enough useful odds and ends to help Zagreus along, for a small fee. None of the Olympians had even thought to charge Zagreus for their services, apparently. Charon was happy to charge him for their services instead.

It was also lucky because it meant that, the first time Zagreus died, Charon was among the first to the scene. He was rowing upriver to relocate his shop, and happened to notice a large gathering of shades. It was odd for so many of them to be in one place, looking at the same thing. Charon stopped, moored his boat, and stepped out to see if whatever had caught their attention was something he could sell to Zagreus.

It was not. It was Zagreus himself, or his body, at least. Most of his chest was caved in, probably crushed by a wretch’s club, and he’d been left lying there while a pool of blood slowly accumulated around him. Charon poked him with his oar to make sure he was dead. He was. It would have been difficult to remain alive, with his body in such shape.

“Hhhrrrrghhhh,” he groaned to the surrounding shades, who backed away, whispering to each other. Charon leaned on his oar and considered the corpse thoughtfully. How strange that Zagreus’s body didn’t disperse when he died. Perhaps it was because of the crimson blood that flowed in Zagreus’s veins instead of ichor. Or perhaps it was simply a quirk of his, like Thanatos’s ability to move instantly across distances.

Whatever the case, nobody liked having a corpse lying around. Someone should probably dispose of that. It was a gruesome job, though. Not the kind of job one would do for free.

Charon knelt down and searched through Zagreus’s pockets. As he’d suspected, the prince still had a handful of obol on him when he died. It would be enough, Charon decided arbitrarily. He slipped the money into his pouch, stood up, and used the end of his oar to push Zagreus into the river.

Zagreus’s red blood mixed with the scarlet waters of the Styx as the corpse sank. Charon stood and watched until it disappeared. “Ghhhheeaaaaahhhh,” he said in farewell, before stepping back onto his boat. Zagreus would be back soon enough. Hopefully with more obol to spend.
