2023 in Books

I need to stop bragging that I’ve got this reading thing all figured out, because man if 2023 wasn’t a year of terrible books. I liked less than half of the 37 I read and nothing quite gripped me in the way it has in years past… but to put it more optimistically I liked a full third of what I read, and the ones I liked best were a fascinating and unexpected silver lining. Without further ado:

Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, trans. Brian Hooker

Tell this all to the world- and then to me. Say very softly that… she loves you not.

I read a couple of plays this year for the first time since college and liked them fine, but there’s a reason this has been adapted five million times. Everyone go watch Megamind right now.

Wylding Hall by Elizabeth Hand

Of all the found footage-inspired horror fiction I’ve read this one makes the best case for existing in its chosen medium, as a 70s UK folk rock band are interviewed about the summer they spent recording what would become their final album [thunder crashes.] It reminded me of a Tana French mystery in its language and ability to make space feel lived-in; the character writing is so strong I realized that at some point I had stopped checking the interview headings to know who was speaking. Hand unfortunately distrusts her audience to read between the lines at a few crucial moments (and ruins what would have been a perfect ending and a deeply affecting scare by gilding the lily, or, in this case, photograph), but I love that she went from seemingly by-the-numbers American YA fiction to a meticulously-researched and truly unique horror novella. Puts other writers working in the genre to shame.

A Kiss Before Dying by Ira Levin

Reminiscent of the best kind of TCM suspense thriller (and was adapted into one), but could only exist as a book for the kind of narrative tactics it employs. Levin is brilliant at setting and character; I think any one of his contemporaries would have leaned into archetypes for this sort of story, and he instead distinguishes his proper nouns in subtle, clever ways that lend them the weight a noir needs. Can’t wait to read more of his stuff!

All the Names They Used for God by Anjali Sachdeva

I’d like to know why this anthology got hit with what a friend has termed a pottery barn throw pillow cover + a ‘the tiny things we know to be small’ title, because the eponymous story isn’t even called that! It’s just The Names They Used for God, and is, appropriately, about two women kidnapped by a religious extremist group. High risk-high reward; I think taken at their base premise the stories could have been insufferable and are instead strange, compelling, and fantastical. There’s a methodicalness and, I don't know, lack of whimsy? to them that’s unusual for fantasy, but also an absence of any one goal or moral in the way Le Guin speaks so highly of. It made me feel the way I did reading and adoring Kelly Link in middle school, and Sachdeva has a much different style that I guess works all the better on adults. My favorite was Robert Greenman and the Mermaid.

Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Lauren Hillenbrand

Someone recommended this to me via Tumblr anon over five years ago, so let me start by saying if that was you I’d like to thank you properly! This book rules! It was written in ‘99 so falls prey to a very specific kind of jingoism, but the mechanics of that are interesting in and of themself. Seabiscuit the animal is a lens through which to view turn-of-the-20th-century America written from the precipice of the 21st; his story told through the expertly-researched biographies of his owner, trainer, and jockey. Hillenbrand is not only a good pop nonfiction historian, but has been a sports writer since the 80s and I never imagined the genre could be so thrilling as I did reading her work. Horse racing is insane and no one should be riding these things btw.

The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton

It was one of the great livery-stableman’s most masterly intuitions to have discovered that Americans want to get away from amusement even more quickly than they want to get to it.

Wharton came from old money New York*, was deeply disillusioned with it and pined for rational (i.e., even more insane) social and political scenes, had myriad thoughts about women and gender relations, and held a love for interior design. I learned all of this after reading but it’s apparent on every page; deeply funny and perceptive, fantastic use of language, the moments where it lost me completely nothing if not interesting. What sticks with me the most are a flair for the operatic and an ability to voice both the feeling and consequences of losing oneself to imagined scenarios. Read the pink parasol scene.

Owls of the Eastern Ice: A Quest to Find and Save the World's Largest Owl by Jonathan S. Slaght

We’d return to our camp to huddle in the freezing tent and wait for our owls in silence, like suitors agonizing over a phone that never rings.

One of the better pieces of science writing I’ve read in a long time, as Slaght frames rural communities as a quintessential part of ecology rather than a barrier to it. His style is amiable and matter-of-fact (sometimes overly so; the amount of metric GIS directions, help), but he's super engaging and clearly holds just as much compassion for people and history as he does animals and natural landscapes. The Blakiston’s fish owls he’s studying are described as unreal, with hoots so low and quiet it sounds like someone has thrown them under a blanket. You can listen to them here.

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke

Took my breath away and surprised me in a way a book hasn’t in years. I'd read Clarke’s 2004 novel when I was maybe fourteen and had vaguely positive but mostly neutral memories of it, and Piranesi being sci-fi-fantasy that came recommended by Tiktok had me very dubious. I ended up devouring it in the way I haven’t read books since I was fourteen; more of a mystery than the suspected high fantasy, with characters I would do disservice to in trying to describe in brief. While the mystery isn’t difficult to ‘solve’ (I’d argue the book also skews young!), the story ends in a way that’s both deeply unexpected and in the only way it could have.

Honorable mentions

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, trans. Peter Washington

[Jigsaw voice] Every man has a devouring passion in his heart as every fruit has its worm.

I spent so much time running my mouth about this one on Tumblr there’s really not much left to say. I think it’s a work of genius that was physically exhausting to read, and I’m sticking it with the honorable mentions mostly because I remember The Three Musketeers being the better book. If you want to read Dumas- and you should- start with that one.

Jonny Appleseed by Joshua Whitehead

I would’ve liked this more had I read it in my late teens/early 20s, but I still think it’s pretty good and would absolutely recommend to anyone in that age bracket. Things that normally annoy me about philosophical first-person lit fic didn’t matter under the weight of Jon’s narratorial voice. He reminded me a little of Lynda Barry’s Maybonne in his understanding and depictions of community and family; his stream of consciousness letting contradictions sit rather than trying to explain them away (Whitehead also makes sex very prosaic and pretty-sounding while still being frank and gross about it, which is a rare talent!)

The Seeds of Life: From Aristotle to da Vinci, from Sharks' Teeth to Frogs' Pants, the Long and Strange Quest to Discover Where Babies Come From by Edward Dolnik

This one fell in the rankings because the writing isn’t my favorite (think early days Vulture article rather than NYT), but I cannot stop referencing it in conversation. I want to read the whole thing to people and make them understand how truly unfathomable it is not only that every one of us is the product of 1 sperm and 1 egg, but that anyone ever figured out how that process works. When Western Europeans first started using microscopes they studied water; there were gross little bugs in there to watch and enjoy, so when semen was revealed to have its own bugs no one was shocked, but they also weren’t impressed. We would not see one enter an egg until EIGHTEEN SEVENTY-FIVE.

Killer Dolphin by Ngaio Marsh

The Malaise of First Night Nerves had gripped Peregrine, not tragically and aesthetically by the throat but, as is its habit, shamefully in the guts.

Has made it into my top 5 favorite Inspector Alleyn mysteries. I’m not keen on Marsh’s theater settings (and there are a LOT of them), but a convoluted setup made this one all the more rewarding. The final revelation as to a point of blackmail is visceral and bizarre in a way I haven’t seen from her before.

The Wretched of the Earth by Frantz Fanon

We all have dirty hands; we are all soiling them in the swamps of our country and in the terrifying emptiness of our brains. Every onlooker is either a coward or a traitor.

Best read in conversation with other writers, I wouldn’t recommend Fanon as the end-all-be-all introduction to communist and socialist thinking (the fact that he inadvertently describes what was going wrong with the USSR at time of writing is fascinating), but he explicitly invites that conversation and the value and impact of his work really can’t be overstated. Our points of disagreement tend to be in regard to nationalism, not his condonation of violence.

Persuasion by Jane Austen

Fascinating to see how Austen was thinking about relationships near the end of her short life. I laughed to see the idea of preferring your brother-in-law’s family to your own was back in full force from my own favorite Emma, as well as an eleventh-hour ‘maybe I should ship the villains??’ My biggest issue is that, like Emma, Persuasion is written in third person limited narration, but Anne is fundamentally Good™ so doesn’t need to learn anything about herself or the world; critic Bob Irvine points out that she and her dashing, misogynistic sailor are beset rather than changed by it. That said I love a people being beset by people (concussed temptresses) places (Bath) and things (cars), and Austen's writing style is really firing on all cylinders here.

Atsushi:

- can dance, yeah, but it's more like letting loose and jumping around idk

- like tapping his foot, bouncing his head, jumping in a circle that kinda thing

- it looks fun tho

- when he sings. Hmm. His voice would be like benson boone ig cause yeah

- but like. The vibe. Nicky youre-type songs but with really depressing topics

- like that one short he released with the 's-a-d overload'

- everyone loves him and he loves them back

- he likes being with people but not necessarily for the attention

- just like. Walking into a supermarket and saying 'OKAY PEOPLE IM PAYING FOR ALL YOUR GROCERIES' shit like that

- he's the type of singer who will either cling to the mic stand or jump around with the mic

- he interacts with the crowd at shows so much

Akutagawa:

- he can sing yeah it's pretty but it kinda hurts to so he prefers dancing

- his voice isn't as low as you'd think? Kinda scratchy tho

- keeps an absolute straight face while dancing. The ladies love it

- okay idk how to describe dancing styles but it's kinda like tense (in a good way?) slow movements and then sudden stops/starts/change in direction

- he's a contortionist btw

- yknow creeping - the weeknd? Yeah its like dancing to that

- or fever - enhypen that kinda thing

- stays kinda low to the ground like he'll be on his knees or crouching or bending over

- thinks atsushi has the best singing voice like ever (except for chuuya because shit??? bastard has talent everyone loves him)

Dazai:

- omg his voice can go super high. Like jason derulo/adam levine type shit

- also he has jason derulo vibes. Lots of love songs and ones about suicide

- everyone's lowkey worried about him but love him nonetheless

- LOVES the attention omg he feeds on it (and drags atsushi (and that means akutagawa too) everywhere with him)

- shinju shinju shinju

- absolutely loves collabs mainly because he gets views from a different audience

- super big on holiday specials

- will ruin chuuya's routine on stage. He will pull him close or trip him up or randomly kiss him

- oh yeah they're together but will deny it in the grave

Chuuya

- singing voice would have like takayan vibes but not as harsh like 'resentful life' that one yeah

- sings and dances about the same? Has his own title as a singer separate from dazai

- can sing just about any song except for slow ones

- uses his head a lot when he's dancing

- like flicks it from side to side or smth

- kinda like how dazai attempts to ruin his routines he ruins his singing

- he will incorporate moves where he like clings to dazai or strokes his face or smth idk

- their performances are very fun to watch heh

- very dynamic poses. Uses a lot of arm movements and doesn't like move from place to place unless it's one big move

- everyone loves the opening moves to his dances for some reason like it'll literally just be clapping and walking backwards or smth to hype up the crowd and it. Works.

- he sings along sometimes with dazai

Ok so

- akutagawa and dazai have been in the dancing/singing careers for a while

- chuuya is an experienced singer but only started dancing a couple years ago (dazai asked him to try and it spiraled from there)

- atsushi is pretty new to singing and has no dancing experience whatsoever he just wings it

- he met aku at a coffee shop because I live for references and they got to talking

- aku mentioned he was a dancer and atsushi was like really? Can I see? And it went from there

- 2S4K (their group name) didn't form until after dazai snagged a collab with sskk and yeah

- dazai knew atsushi for a while but only through tanizaki who works at a record company

- he (dazai) and akutagawa went to the same college (yeah aku was the quiet new dude who just followed him around)

- dazai and chuuya have known each other forever don't even ask

- i haven't thought about anyone else's roles much yet but I think fukuzawa and kunikida own a record label company which ranpo helps out at (he's still world's greatest detective)

There has been a lot of couples that have parted away during this period, September 2022 (almost all of them due to cheating), during Retrograde season. This cannot be just a coincidence, plus the stories share a lot of similarities.

Disclaimer! I am not a pro at astrology, but I think I am good with details and at seeing the possible relations between them. This is a comparison between couples and the possible "effects" of the planets in them.

1.-Risto Mejidez and Laura Escanes (unknown reason). 2.-Tamara Falcó (Isabel Preysler's daughter) and Íñigo Onieva (Cheating). 3.-We could also add Piqué in here.

All these break-ups have in common that the man was cheating (ugh,men 🤢), and it was mostly known through internet (a.k.a taken videos from strangers, or leaked conversations).

The fathers-husbands have been cheating because they have no self-control (Saturn R.) and nowadays they are being exposed (Mercury R.). This is creating deep wounds on their wives (Chiron R.) but for their own good (Jupiter R.), so they can heal and find what's really good for them. It's also the turn of well-known/celebrity couples so society can reinterpret what they have known until now (Jupiter R.).

The planets in retrograde who I think could have an effect in these relationships are:

The planet of communication has always been a problem when in retrograde due to communication issues (the fallen of internet, the malfunction of social apps...). But in this case, the news are not affected in its reach but because of its content. The news are bad; and also leaked due to other people. There are secrets coming out.

Chiron is a comet whose influence resides in healing wounds, the deepest wounds and the efforts to heal them.... It being in retrograde, to me, it means that deep wound will be opened. Chiron is acting as trigger that will help people, in this case, women to get rid of their 🤢cheater husbands. Because the women deserve much better ✨.

▒░⡷⠂3.-ᴊᴜᴘɪᴛᴇʀ⠐⢾░▒

For me, it's one of the planets with most influence right now, because it's the closest he has been Earth in 60 years!!! The planet of Jupiter in retrograde means that the cheaters are out of luck. There could be a new generation of women that need to rethink their actual lives, stop being generous and rediscover their hobbies. Strong women that have decided that they deserve better. In Jupiter retrograde, what the world offers may not be what we need, so we must first look within ourselves.

The Chiron + Jupiter combo in retrograde for me is essential; as it wounds them or it has been exposing the Husbands's cheatings for the own good of the wives, I suppose they do not want to spend the rest of their life with someone as their husbands.

Saturn rules over boundaries and rules... so when it is in retrograde it could mean that the rules are less present. Could the husbands feel they are entitled to not be loyal and to not follow their responsibilities? Sure, they were feeling silly. (This is irony btw, I will never justify their cheating). Plus, the Mercury + Saturn retrograde is perfect to communicate to the world the lack of rules they were following.

Also, Saturn is the planet of the "father-figures". So, it does not surprise me that at least 3 of the 4 worldwide couples have little kids and! Much more the audacity of Adam Levine wanting to call the non-born child of he and his wife with the name of his mistress. They are failing, at least, publicly as fathers and husbands. They are not able to be the father and husband figure that it is demanded of them.

▒░⡷⠂5.-ᴘʟᴜᴛᴏ⠐⢾░▒

I think this planet is important due to Pluto being also in retrograde and having influence over sex (as in all the couples there is cheating).

Also, Pluto destroys when it is in reverse, it's a strong planet. What sex could destroy a relationship? The cheating.

6.-Uranus and Neptune also in retrograde could mean that things are dissolved or broken.

Specific curiosities of the couples under this ⬇️⬇️

These people have a lot of placements in Sagittarius (Jupiter), Aquarius (Uranus and Saturn) and Gemini (Mercury) and Aries (the sign who is in Chiron and Jupiter right now). What could enlarge the influence of the planets in these people.

-Adam Levine and Behati Prinsloo

Both are Aquarius Suns as they were born in the same day but 10 years apart. Pique, the cheater has Venus in Sagittarius in 1st house but really close to the 12th house. He's dominant Aquarius and Saturn... We can see why this period has affected him.

Shakira has Venus Aries in the 12th house, it could indicate a facility to suffer secret relationships or affairs. (Aries is also now in Chiron and Jupiter, the retrograde planets).

-Ned Flumer and Ariel

Adam Levine, the cheater 🤢, has his Venus in Aquarius and Neptune in Sagittarius. What indicates that he likes "freedom".

Also, it is said that in the break-up between Tamara Falco and Íñigo, her mum, who's an Aquarius decided to leak the videos of him cheating. The Aquarius mom decided to take justice by her hands, we love it bb. <3.<3.<3.<3.

Ned Flumer has a Sagittarius Stellium; what could enlarge the Jupiter Retrograde influence on him. With that, it goes away the luck he had hiding his cheating. And he has his sun and venus in Gemini (Mercury R.).

Because @erionlextib threatened me at water gun point, an elaboration on why Levin being Garroth’s son is just proof to me that he is a fruit.

This is mostly /j btw I’m just shitposting.

Okay, Garroth’s a former heir to a lord, and now a head guard, his sense of honour would be crippling, right? Like he sweats honour and responsibility and respect. So him knocking up his own lords wife could mean pretty much only one thing.

Because you could be like ‘oh maybe he loved Matilda so much he was willing to put his honour aside for her’ but he didn’t remember her name after she left, or even bring her up again afterwards.

But who did he remember? Malik. His lord. Matilda’s husband. He was bent for his lord and so he slept with the lords wife bc that was the closest he could get.

I can never trust Adam Noah Levine. And his Sagittarius friend! Changing faces! Doppelgängers!! Too much money and too much power!! They can change everything and they can make us have selective amnesia!! And they can call it dementia! Alzheimer’s! 1:10 am pdt. Maryka doesn’t need saving. She’s saving herself and Adam. They are into each other. I thought poor Maryka, she might want to be with someone her own age!! But I see now there are reasons to believe that he is obsessed with her and she likes it. 1:12 am pdt. He’s been putting knots in my hair on/off this year and it hurts so much when I’m not thinking that it’s going to be there. Ripped hairs out probably from the root 😭😭😭😭😞😞😞😞. My sister dated a man who was I think 11 years older. When we were kids I made her promise me not to date a guy older than me. She ended up breaking up with the older man and they are no longer friends. She’s married I think to someone who is the same age and I think they’re ok? I hope 🤞. Everyone is different. It didn’t work out for my mom and dad. My moms first boyfriend after the divorce was younger than her. She was still pretty and I guess sexy and youthful looking at the time. I think she was 39. And I look the complete opposite now. He transformed me drastically in the last 2 years, but it started in 2017. What a difference a day makes. 24 little hours. 🎼🎵🎶

when my mom was dating him he gave me a new backpack 🎒 to start middle school 🏫 and the mascot of the school was COUGARS! Meant to be???? 1:25 am pdt they changed the name of the school 🏫 sometime after my sister graduated 👩‍🎓 in high school 🏫 my economics teacher 👨‍🏫👨🏻‍🏫 brought in the movie 🍿 the graduate 👨‍🎓 to watch. Very sad. But Maryka does not have this problem. The minions dropped a pubic hair that had a white tip and the center length was dyed the same color as Maryka’s hair. So it seems that they like the same hair color at the same time because it was days ago when I found it. It seemed like it was to mock me bcz it was at the same time she put up the picture with the orange 🍊 heart ❤️ emoji. So she’s toying with me and putting on a show and then smashed 💥 me into the ground figuratively with the pubic hair in private. She took down the picture the next day I think 🤔. you just stay there, like a stone, while you hear him crying.

you don't want to think anything bad about him, so you just hug him back. gently touching his hair.

it's okay, even now, he was still noel. your noel. he would never do anything bad without a reason.

it didn't matter anyways, and you knew it. when you less expect it, you will be back to your first day in the mansion. when you still thought he was nothing but a puppy who only wants you to like him.

okay so this is a beautiful question. obviously, i can only answer subjectively, based on artists that i already know. so other people's opinions will be different, but here's my take.

JUDE:

in TCP, Jude states she likes "sad ballads" (this is during the scene where she's telling Dain a bunch of stuff that may or may not be true, and she never tells us which one is a lie, but i'm just rolling with it).

so i'm thinking her more "upbeat" favs would include artists like: Lana Del Rey, Lorde, Florence & the Machine, Jessie Reyes, Hayley Williams, Paramore, Billie Eilish, Gabrielle Aplin (but mainly her old stuff)

anything that's "angst with a hint of angry".

and her more sobering favs would include artists like: Hozier, Bon Iver, James Vincent McMorrow, Adele, Sleeping At Last, Daughter, Julia Stone, Mree, Birdy, Of Monsters and Men (i think she'd be amused by this band name)

basically "forest pull me down with ivy".

CARDAN:

i'd like to think Cardan would have a very eclectic taste in music.

if you gave him the aux he'd oscillate between Queen, Massive Attack, Lizzo, and Nordic Death Metal without warning.

he's the kind of person who would fall asleep with headphones on, and when Jude sees him passed out on the couch she tenderly removes them from his ears only to find he was listening to Skrillex on full volume.

i also think he'd appreciate The 1975, Carly Rae Jepsen, King Princess, Kehlani, The Veronicas (don't @ me, he would), Panic! At The Disco, and Lindsey Stirling. the bi essentials.

what we know about paw patrol the movie

now updated after the premiere of the film! but still no spoilers.

hey guys! i wanted to create this little ICYMI article about the film. this will be updated once i get more info. don't worry, there won't be much major spoilers.

here we go:

- this was planned back in 2017

- mikros animation: let's see their take on paw patrol

- celebrity cast: tyler perry, kim kardashian west, jimmy kimmel, dax shepard, yara shahidi, marsai martin, iain armitage, randall park (there are interviews if you want to see)

- new pup named liberty

- first look was released during the KCA 2021. marsai martin, who voices liberty in the film, was the presenter

- official trailer was released on june 3 (aka the time stray kids won kingdom and i have to check out the paw patrol movie trailer right away)

- adventure bay and adventure city are different places

- the paw patrol's VAs from the series are in the film, but there are some changes:

rocky is voiced by callum shoniker, who's known for voicing copycat in the mighty pups charged up series (this got me surprised tho)

ryder is voiced by will brisbin and chase is voiced by iain armitage (i legit thought it was justin paul kelly. iain is still a pretty good choice btw)

- there are individual posters

- new gadgets: skye's wedgie drone, marshall's ladder slide, etc.

- the little turtle in the middle of the street is probably the reason why the truck driver gus got into a situation

- the books for the movie released quite early. in one of the books, titled "be brave, little pup", there's a chase and ryder backstory, as also seen in the cover. so the movie will also show that, aside from the humdinger scheme and cool rescues seen in the trailer. the backstory thing (which was also mentioned in the synopsis) actually got me interested to watch the film

- we get to see new scenes in various tv spots

- there are some references from the series (!)

- in some countries such as uk, france, and mexico, the film will premiere earlier than august 20

- movie toys available on august 1... actually, earlier than august 1! some toys and merch are available for pre order

speaking of toys, the va's of the paw patrol members shared their unboxing pics/vids of the movie toys they received (i haven't seen shayle's, maybe he didn't post?)

- a pawsome series marathon on nick

- not only one song, there are more! so far, the artists who wrote and performed original songs for the film are adam levine (good mood) and alessia cara (the use in trying)

good mood was released on august 6, and the use in trying was released on august 10

the two songs have lyric mvs

there is a new version of the paw patrol theme made for the movie

- according to kim kardashian, at first, her character delores was going to have a quite raspy voice and the crew were going to do something different, but when the producers saw how kim k naturally talks, they changed it to be more like a valley girl

- few of the cast from team u.s. attended the premiere on august 8 (kim k's family had a private screening on the 12th), and cast and crew from team canada attended the toronto premiere on august 14

- reviews are going paw-sitive!

- blu-ray release is on november 2 and digital release is on september 21. i found an article about this

- according to one interview with lilly bartlam, she had to re-audition as skye

- will brisbin shared his story about how he got the role of ryder and voice acting for the first time in several interviews

- writer and director cal brunker revealed an idea that didn't make it to the movie through this tweet

- few storyboards were released

- sequel announced! paw patrol: the mighty movie is set to premiere on october 13, 2023. synopsis was also revealed and it says that it's going to be focused on skye. there is also a spinoff coming soon

- paw patrol movie's first win! the song good mood won best song for animated film in hollywood music in media awards

So I’ve been meaning to post these doodles of Antía during the first session of the VTM campaign I’m playing in with @devil-latte and @cthylla-rlyeh as our amazing storyteller! :D

And boy has it been a trip for Antía so far, first she accidentally gets her sire badly burned because she ended up causing a fire to break out due to the oil lamp being dropped by the ghoul she was at first trying to slit their throat but then ended up eating him because she frenzied cause she was real hungry! XD Luckily the rest of the gang (including @devil-latte‘s Lan) came and put out the fire, cause poor Antía wasn’t going to be able to at all since she got Rötschreck which made her curl up into a ball, but needless to say her sire was very upset with her! :(((

But Antía managed to find not only where the cashe of cash was but also managed to crack the safe open very quickly, so at least she still managed to prove herself useful! (My poor girl is in big survival mode constantly, hope that if she can keep being useful she’ll still get to live! ;_;) and she managed to nab herself something really nice, that she can feel good about having, even if she did steal it before the loot was actually shared out. XD

But aside from the pretty neat brooch, Antía does have friends to give her comfort in her trapped existence (Btw the dolls are what is all over her sire’s house, and Antía is often locked in her bedroom), Lan who is caring and concerned for her in his own quiet way :3 and Gabriela Salazar who is a local girl who sells flowers (her touchstone) which Antía sneaks out to visit. :) Gabriela is saving up for tickets for a opera singer who is coming to town for a show in a couple of days and wants to know if Antía can see if it’ll be good or not (she knows that Antía can see premonitions) and Antía has a vision that is real ominous to be honest! @_@

And now the gang gets visited by a Kiasyd named Florence Levine, who tells them that her sire has a job offer...

This session was really fun and exciting and I can’t wait to play the next session! :D

Moby Dick 1998 reactions

Literally just the notes I took watching the 1998 Moby Dick miniseries. I enjoyed it a lot but I like the 2011 one better.

Elijah is pretty goofy here

Note to self--find video of Henry Thomas talking in his normal voice. Is he doing a weird accent for this role, or is that just how he talks? He sounds almost Irish. [BTW after I finished watching, I looked up a video of him talking in his normal voice and he does not sound weirdly Irish-tinged in real life, so I have no idea why he was talking like that in this adaptation.]

They shoehorn some narration from the book into Ishmael’s dialogue

Not sure if the problem is with the actor or the dialogue, but Henry Thomas’s performance is...rather stilted

Here, Ishmael has no nautical experience.

“I fear I must make a confession. I used to be a schoolteacher.” HE SAYS THAT LIKE IT’S SO EMBARRASSING

When Peleg says that Queequeg “doesn’t look like much of a Christian,” Ishmael fires back with “HE’S KILLED MORE WHALES THAN YOU CAN COUNT” and seriously looks like he’s about to punch Peleg until Queequeg puts his hand on his shoulder.

Queequeg is less worldly here than in the book. Ishmael takes him to church to teach him about the concepts of God and souls.

STARBUCK IS PLAYED BY BUFFALO BILL FROM THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS?!

Ishmael is so serious here

Stubb is perfect

Interesting that Ishmael is a brand-new sailor, but he already knows the song (shanty?) the other sailors are singing

The guy playing Flask could stand to rein it in a bit

Pip is younger than I imagined him. But then, I don’t think his age is specified in the book.

Ishmael’s hands are burned by the rope. Later, below decks, Queequeg patches them up :)

One guy literally refers to Ishmael and Queequeg as “lovebirds” and another guy makes kissing noises at them

Those guys try (pathetically) to bully Queequeg. Ishmael says to Queequeg, sounding kind of ashamed, “You pagans should teach us Christians the art of kindness.” Queequeg reassures him that they (Q & I) are friends *emotional emoji*

This is so weird! There’s a scene where basically the whole crew converges on Ishmael and tells him scary whale facts while he looks terrified!

I feel like Ahab needs to have a beard. I forget if he has one in the book but he SHOULD.

Ted Levine has the absolute BEST judgmental face.

They keep the scene of Ahab throwing his pipe overboard!

Pip sounds like he’s from the Caribbean? Interesting. I looked up the actor and he’s from Wisconsin.

Fedallah is east Asian instead of Parsi for some reason

“There’s no savagery of beast that’s not infinitely outdone by that of man.” I love that they retain Ishmael’s bursts of human-phobia!

The little swing Captain Boomer uses to get to the Pequod looks like so much fun

After the encounter with the Samuel Enderby, Starbuck openly stands up to Ahab, but Ahab shuts him down. Then there’s a shot of Pip angrily throwing down his tambourine. I like that. It adds some depth to Pip.

Wait, Bulkington’s name is in the credits??? He’s here??? I looked up the guy who plays him and I don’t recognize him but apparently the character is here somewhere.

The whale looks so silly

Pip is in Starbuck’s boat here, and the emphasis is on Starbuck, not Stubb, choosing not to bother helping him. That’s an odd choice. I like that Ishmael is trying to get Starbuck to go back for Pip. When the hunt is over, Starbuck proposes going back for him and Stubb argues against it. Now that I think about it, I kind of see what they were going for. Starbuck’s first priority is to get the job done and his second priority is morality.

A SHARK ALMOST GETS PIP?! WHAT’S GOING ON

When the rescue boat approaches the Pequod, there’s a shot of Ishmael holding Pip in his arms <3

When Pip is lifted aboard, Stubb celebrates. Sir, kindly shut up. You were in favor of leaving him to die. Okay, to be fair, I guess the novel is coloring my view of the miniseries’ take on the character. Here, Stubb wasn’t the one who left him behind, that was Starbuck. Stubb just thought he was probably dead, which I guess is reasonable.

Out of nowhere (unless I’ve forgotten something), Bulkington is an actual character in Part 2.

I love the choice to literally film from Pip’s point of view to depict his terror and disorientation.

I don’t love this portrayal of Queequeg, to be honest. He lacks subtlety.

Pip starts dressing up as Ahab. I’m trying very hard not to find this funny. I KNOW it’s serious. It just reminds me of when I was a kid and I would entertain my mom by putting on her hat and shoes.

Unlike in the book, here Pip doesn’t become...I don’t know the word for it. Disidentified with himself? He doesn’t talk about “Pip” in the third person or say that Pip is dead or missing.

I like that, unlike the 1956 and 2011 versions, this one is really making an effort to depict the bond that forms between Pip and Ahab. However, the fact that it only forms once Ahab sees Pip dressed up as him cheapens it a bit, I feel.

Ooh, they have Queequeg stand up to Ahab! That’s a fun choice.

Ishmael is very angry that everyone on the ship is going mad.

Why do some of the actors pronounce Queequeg’s name “kee-quay”???

THEY HAVE QUEEQUEG DECLARE THAT THERE IS NO GOD ON THE PEQUOD AND THROW YOJO IN THE FIRE???

Starbuck catches Bulkington trying to jump ship and go home to his wife. Instead of trying to stop him, he gives him a letter to deliver to Mary. Bulkington suggests that Starbuck just come along with him, but Starbuck can’t bring himself to do that. That’s really interesting. I like that.

Starbuck comes into Ahab’s cabin, where Ahab and Pip are both asleep, and stands menacingly over Ahab. Maybe thinking murderous thoughts? I’m not sure, but DEFINITELY thinking malicious thoughts. But then he sees Ahab put his hand on top of Pip’s, and he softens. I love that.

Ahab takes the wheel in a storm. Major Flint vibes!

Patrick Stewart seems to be having a great time

I THINK QUEEQUEG JUST DECLARED AHAB HIS GOD? WTF

Ishmael and Starbuck commiserate about how everyone else on this crew has lost their minds. In the book, Ishmael is clear about the fact that he was under Ahab’s spell just like the rest of the crew (minus Starbuck), but I guess they wanted to give him stuff to do in this adaptation aside from just being one of the crowd.

Whoa there is something weird going on between Starbuck and Ishmael. I’m starting to ship it, frankly.

I don’t like what they did with the “let me gaze into a human eye” scene. In the book, it’s really moving. Here, Starbuck literally has a knife in his hand. Ahab puts his hand on Starbuck’s face and Starbuck looks extremely uncomfortable. However, as the interaction continues, you see Starbuck start to feel less murderous and try to reason with Ahab, so I guess that’s good.

Oh snap! Starbuck holds the knife to Ahab’s chest...and then starts crying. And then voluntarily lowers the knife. This is wild. Ahab says “what have I done” and you get the sense that he’s on the verge of being persuaded...when the guy on the masthead spots the whale.

I like that this version includes Fedallah at all but Kee Chan is simply not given a whole lot to work with.

OH GOD QUEEQUEG GETS BADLY INJURED—I THINK HE SOMEHOW GETS HARPOONED?—AND HIS LAST WORD IS “ISHMAEL” AND THEN HE SINKS UNDER AND ISHMAEL SCREAMS AND DIVES AFTER HIM AND TRIES TO PULL HIM UP BUT QUEEQUEG SHAKES HIM OFF I’M GONNA DIE

Starbuck is just hanging out inside the boat this whole time and then the whale rams into the boat and Starbuck and Pip both get overwhelmed by the water :(

As the carpenter dies, there’s a shot of the doubloon in his hand. I like that.

As with the 2011 version, the “epilogue” feels a little rushed. I guess maybe it just doesn’t translate all that well to the screen. Oh well.

Devlin Levin Ideas

To be clear, most of these ideas are not tied to any specific Ben 10k/future universe that we have seen; rather, these are all ideas applicable to any universe about Devlin. Many of the ideas will likely be incorporated into my own personal version of the character.

Origins

Devlin is Kevin Levin’s son. After Devlin’s appearance and before Gewvin became a thing, the basic story was that Kevin 11,000 had Devlin with a random, unnamed woman, and got put in the Null Void not long after. This backstory leaves a lot of blanks, and would not work for every version of Kevin. So, here are some alternate Devlin backstory ideas (some of which are shamelessly based off the headcanons of others):

The Clone Theory: someone (probably Proctor Servantis) cloned Kevin. This would allow for Gwevin without Gwen being Devlin’s mother. I actually really like this option for bad/crazy-Kevin-who-gets-redeemed, because I can imagine a power mad Kevin saving Devlin being what reignites the Tennysons’ faith in his ability to be saved himself.

Gwevin Version 1- Weird Osmosian Biology (I do not mess with that “Osmosians are not actually aliens” retcon btw): Kevin spawned Devlin all on his own, possibly with Gwen’s DNA, but maybe not. This preserves the possibility of the Tennyson family not knowing about him, opens up the possibility for him to be related to them or not, and works equally well with any Osmosian version of Kevin, good or bad.

Gwevin Version 2- Kidnapped Kid: Devlin is Kevin and Gwen’s kid, and was kidnapped when he was quite young. By a crazy Kevin? By an old enemy? By someone who just wanted an Osmosian for some reason? This backstory has a lot of room to play around in. Kevin could go crazy and kidnap his own kid, go crazy because someone kidnapped his kid, or he could remain sane. Having Devlin pop up years later is prime drama material.

Gwevin Version 3- Raised by Gwen (and maybe Kevin): this one is fairly self explanatory

Other Ideas

I think his full name is Devlin Kwarrel Levin

Devlin’s eyes look dark blue in his first appearance, but Kevin’s are black and Gwen’s are green, so I prefer one of colors those for him. Green, if he’s Gwen’s son.

If Devlin is Gwen’s son, I don’t think he inherited the Anodite Spark, personally.

If Devlin was mothered by a random woman from a Saturn colony, she was probably a criminal, and may not have been human. Devlin clearly takes after his father; his mother could easily be, say, a vulpimancer who runs a small organized crime ring. Devlin did not seem eager to return to his unnamed mother in his first appearance.

Full Name: Jora Ladybird Holiday

Age: 9; 15 in Omniverse

Species: Human

Hometown: Anneville, S.C.

Current Residence: Bellwood

Eye Color: Deep brown/blackish

Hair Color: Black

Skin Color: Very deep brown

Appearance: Jora is tall for her age, chubby and often wears her hair loose in a parted styled held together with bobby pins. She has a wide and round face, nose, and short uet very thick eyebrows. She wears very little makeup, and always seen wearing lacy pink gloves.

Attire: Varies by seasons and series but she typically wears vibrant or pastel hues with floral and animal motifs, cutesy designs, or polka dots. I'll make an outfit ref soon!

Personality: Jora is described as a super sweet if timid and shy young woman with a deep respect for life. However she bottles up a lot of her negative emotions which sometimes makes her a doormat or she ends up being really icy. She learns to beyter express her negativity, though she does retain emotional sensitivity time to time.

In the OS Jo had to overcome one of her biggest flaws, Bystander Syndrome, in order to protect herself and her friend. Throughout thr series she becomes more assertive, though she dislikes sounding too mean.

While she adheres to the theme of second chances, she has little tolerance for faking and betrayals and wants people to actively work on making amends or changing their ways. She knows that some people can't change, so instead of active revenge she would rather let the person's actions catch up to them, or hold them accountable. She despises assumptions that she's evil just because of her powers. She admits to harboring some resentment, but over time she learned to accept her condition and adapt to it rather creatively.

Likes & Hobbies: Designing her own costumes, watching trashy TV programs, reading, mycology, nature walks, flower pressing, DIY projects, casual/virtual pet gaming, fashion design, Green Cleaning, apple pie, chocolate and strawberry milkshakes, tea with sugar and cream, travel, meditation, quiet time

Love Interests: Ben Tennyson

Ship Name: Cosmic Toadstool or BenJo

Ben Tennyson is her major love interest, starting from a brief tense rivalry from their first meeting. Over time they began to see they had common ground and developed more friendly relations by the end. The Ben 10000 episode is particularly amusing in that BOTH of them were quite disgusting at the implication that their older selves dated each other. Ironically it was their older selves watching their example that lowkey led to them getting back together.

They restarted their friendship in Omniverse albeit clumsily as both hadn't seen nor heard from each other in several years. Not to mention new problems: Jora hadn't quite got over her shyness and was socially awkward, and Ben swore off romance after too many failed relationships ego and wanting to focus on his hero career. Layer seasons would see the two began to grow a romantic attraction to each other, with them getting together post series. I kinda didn't want them together right at the end of s8 to drive home the point of them navigating a romance and not just "fighting fate" or what not. So they'll get together on THEIR own terms.

Backstory: Jora appears in the original show as a recurring character and ally to the Tennysons. The joke is that her family, who were also on a cross-country road trip, would often show up at the exact same city or town the Tennysons would be in.

Original Series: Unlike Ben and Gwen, the timid Jo was born with her powers but was afraid of them as she could barely keep it in check. She also didn't start out friendly with the two having been put off by their constant quarreling. It wasn't until an encounter with Kevin Levin (hint: KIDNAP) where she tried using her powers to defend herself and Four Arms for the first time. It didn't exactly work out leaving her ashamed for being a bystander, and decided to remedy this by practicing her powers for better use. This leads up to the Camp Fear event where she played a huge part in containing and eventually purifying the corrupted Mycellium (and yes corrupted; there's something bigger going on).

There were a couple of more adventures: goinf to Chicago to meet up with her cousins Patti and Ginger for a music fesitval; time travel shenanigans, fighting Rojo and her niece Cinnabar, & battling the the Negative 10. Her relationship with Ben and Gwen also greatly improved to the point where they became genuine friends near the end of the show.

UAF: After the road trip ended, she parted ways with the Tennysons and headed back to her hometown of Anneville,S.C. While not fully copinf with her powers she had a rejuvenated sense of self confidence and decided to find more uses for her powers. This included clearing away invasive plant species around town, going into homes and clearing away toxic molds, and dabbling into the scientific side of her powers. She maintained contact with the Tennysons until a few years when life started to get too busy for any of them to remain in contact.

It was also at this point Jora would learn about the scorn "dark" elementals would face, as well as a conflict between dark elementals just wanting to live their lives in peace and a group called the Temple of Light. The Temple's goal was to rid the world of all evil but took rather underhanded methods to do it. Jo would also briefly battle a faction of Forever Knights led by her contemporary Forever Princess, and villainous entrepreneur Kudzu.

Omniverse: Six years passed and Jora got a request from Max Tennyson to join a new "initiative." She turned it down, feeling that she wasn't suited for actual superheroics and wanting to focus on her studies. She was also afraid of seeing her old friends; a small part of her wondered if they'd still recognize her after so many years.

A few weeks later Patti planned on moving to Bellwood for her new job. Jora came with her to help her move in, & it was that trip where she and Ben reunited, and met his new partner Rook Blonko. Ben mentioned about his grandfather picking out new teammates to protect Bellwood. Jora admitted that max sent her a letter but she turned him down for personal reasons. Feeling rather disappointed Ben states that there's always an open spot for her.

During her stay Jora and Rook were taken around town to get familiar with each other and the sites. Rook was curious about her relationship with Ben which she replies that they go way back but hadn't really talked to each other in years. Much of season one and two is spent with her and Ben awkwardly reconnecting. Eventually she becomes a bit of a consultant for the Plumbers and a major member of Team 10, further developing her friendship with Rook, and something much deeper with Ben.

Post Series: Jora's experiences leads her to try to form a villain rehab group, succeeding by forming the Substitute Plumbers. She also begins to use her status and fame to raise awareness on multiple issues from gentrification to widespread Plumber corruption. After a brief breakup and working solo, She and Ben 10000 reconciled and within a year of two married and had three kids over the span of ten more years. Jora became a consultant specializing in Earth customs.

Trivia

- Voice Claim is Kimberly Brooks

- Her theme is nature to contrast with Ben's aliens and Gwen's magic

- Also a bit ironic: she's a good character who protects and values life yet has a power linked to death/dying.

- Doesn't really have a signature color though she does wear a lot of white accents as white symbolizes death in some cultures

- She was made 1) because I'm salty B10 didn't have a named black girl character & 2) to give Ben a compelling/fleshed out love interest

- Jora has a Reboot counterpart! Largely the same except now she's a main fixture right from rhe beginning and has a slightly different power set

- She's not present in every single episode of the original; those times she'd be off with her family doing their own thing

- Her verse is called the Joraverse since it's a complete rewrite of the OS and OV as a whole (not strictly related to her btw but I'm also salty at more than a fee b10 things)

- Her alternate counterparts has different elements, personalities and even designs!

- If she existed her theme song would be the Japanese cover of Say So by Rainych

- Much of Jo's character is based on Card Captor Sakura since I've always been a fan of that show

- Just like how Ben has different aliens Jora has different costumes with different themes.

- In OV her costumes signify each color of the rainbow and has a pun of some sort. She even earns special items with different properties (elemental spells, alien tech, token of peace).

- While Jora appreciates all of Ben's forms she has a certain fondness for Four Arms and Grey Matter (he rescued her as Four Arms and she finds Grey Matter adorable)
