#I didn't even like the Jet ep in this original

I don't know whether anyone has talked about this yet but wasn't the main point about the Jet storyline, that fire nation ppl shouldn't just be killed off as revenge?? Wasn't it also supposed to be an instance of comparison between what a good leader is and what an edgy leader is aka sokka being the former and jet being the latter?? Wasn't it also supposed to be an instance that made katara sad because she bonded with jet over the loss of their family and nearly went down a dangerous path because of him??
1. How is replacing it with oh let's kill the scientist guy that's helping the fire nation and use that as an opportunity to kill the royals too a good change? Thereby taking away substantially from the whole innocent "fire nation" ppl shouldn't be punished for the actions of, plot point which is very relevant to the thematics of the story?
2. Why take away sokka's intuition as a leader and instead turn it into a sibling squabble where sokka has literally no role in the Jet storyline except that he appreciates Sai and doesn't think he should be killed? And instead have katara through one tiny whip of water save the day?? Thereby taking away a part of sokka's growth, even though this live action loves shoving it down everyone's throat that sokka's personality trait is that he's obsessed with being a leader?
3. Why take away from katara's emotional range? And how her fight with jet was fuelled by rage that she's coming to terms with and how betrayed she felt?? What does having jet say her waterbending is good because of him and have her say, no its because of her, add to the story??? It's like the live action is obsessed with highlighting that katara is a master water bender (which is incorrect since she trained hard and got very good at it) and that she doesn't have the emotional bandwidth to express mixed emotions?? Also their interaction, was supposed to highlight how even if two ppl suffer the same way, their approaches in response can still be very different and that revenge is not the answer, which is foreshadowing to katara's journey in the story.
I just don't understand why the story had to go in this direction and I certainly don't understand how one can be okay with how much they chipped off in relation to characters and thematics??

Netflix atla live action review ep 1-3
So i was able to watch the first three episodes and i wrote down some thoughts. Strap yourselves in, it's gonna be a big post. There's a lot i don't like, but it's not all negative. So let's get the negative out of the way first, then we'll get to the positive.
The cgi is abhorrent. Especially the green screen stuff where a lot of movement is happening. I'm specifically referring to the scenes of Katara and Sokka in the canoe as well as the Omashu railing system, and anytime Aang is flying on his glider. The bending may be better than the original live action, but it's not good either. Bending for me was always gonna be impossible in live action. I never feel like there's any connection between the moves the actor is making and the cgi element. In animation it's much easier to make the two connect, but an actor is basically staring at nothing and moving their hands around a bunch, hoping post will make it look good. This show also fell prey to the "ball of water is consistently losing water and yet remains the same shape and size" trap. I think out of all the elements the airbending looks the best and the earthbending so far the worst. The Avatar state looked very janky as well, some shots looked like there wasn't even an actor there anymore and it was all animated. And not animated in a good way either, some of the movements were way to wobbly, reminding me of that weird broom flying cgi in the first harry potter movie where the character is flopping about awkwardly bc it's badly animated. The animals also look pretty weird to me, i can barely tell where Appa's face is most of the time. Also for some reason they have momo making monkey noises instead of lemur noises? Like he legit sounds like a chimpanzee? I wonder what that's about.
The costumes are very hit or miss. They're very bright and i've often seen them fit awkwardly on the actors. Suki's headband was practically sliding off of her head while doing a fight scene, and in Omashu an extra's headscarf literally slid off of her head as she walked out of frame. Don't even mention Bumi to me either, that guy looks absolutely insane to me and i mean that negative. I can't suspend my disbelief enough to pretend that's a real guy. I liked Suki's makeup however, and i really like how they did Katara's hair and outfit. We got our first glance at Ty Lee and Mai too, and i like that Ty Lee is basically a carbon copy of her cartoon outfit.
Some story choices are.... interesting. Some of them, i'm not sure whether i like them or not yet. I'm confused as to why they combined three different stories into the Omashu storyline. We have Bumi, Teo and the Mechanist, as well as Jet all piled up in the same city, and somehow Zuko is there as well. The Jet story happened way too quickly, and i'm confused as to why Sokka was so upset at Jet's betrayal when he hadn't even spoken to the guy at all, he didn't even know his name. I don't like the choice of having everyone split up in Omashu. There was a lot of focus on Katara and Sokka and Aang barely appeared. I will say i really loved the no bending fight Aang and Zuko had in Omashu. Such a shame that their choreography barely got any time to shine due to the fight scenes being edited like marvel movies to hide mistakes. This has me excited for the blue spirit episode though!
I don't like the way they revealed that Aang is the Avatar in the watertribe. Why is Gran Gran the one that immediately knows? Just bc she's old? I liked that Aang revealed it himself in the original, but in this one it's just Gran Gran telling everyone who he is and Sokka not even believing her.
Then there's the opening for the first episode. I have very mixed feelings. I like that they showed the bond between Gyatso and Aang, and i liked the way they switched between Gyatso's last stand and Aang falling into the water. I'm sticking to my guns however with saying that we didn't need to see the attack on the airtemples play out. I liked it being this mysterious event that happened so long ago it's become legend to anyone alive today. But now, as a viewer, we have more information than our main characters. It also took away from the emotional turmoil of Aang finding Gyatso's skeleton. In the original, there's still this slimmer of hope, are they really dead? Could some still be alive? Only for it to be ripped away then and there. Now the audience already knows Gyatso is dead, we know what Aang is about to find. They also didn't really linger on Aang's emotions after this, like at all? He buried Gyatso and basically went "alright where to next?"
There also seems to be a lot less bonding time, making the relationship between the characters in episode 1 and 2 very weird. Katara and Aang barely had one conversation in the first episode, and Katara was already talking about Aang changing her life and helping improve her bending after only one day. It feels very weird and forced. It gets better by episode 3, but it was definitely bad in the first two.
I'm gonna say it again but i'm mad about Sokka's sexism arc disappearing. Suki was angry at Sokka for just comparing her skills as a warrior to him, when she hadn't even seen him fight yet. She also starts out as being weirdly enchanted by Sokka just bc he's an outsider. He's not even attractive at all, and they're trying to sell him as some sort of heartthrob. I like their bonding time while they trained, but i don't like how immediately Sokka is hung up on her. He still needs to meet Yue, and idk about you but to me it would be weird for him to already like one girl, and suddenly jump to the next.
I'm not sure why Kyoshi is being Aang's main Avatar guide here? I always figured it should be the Avatar right before you that would do the job, so why did Kyoshi get to Aang before Roku? And why did she already give Aang the speech about saving the world? What else is Roku gonna do? I know we get the Hei Bai story in this show, so what's the point of the Hei Bai story when it doesn't lead to Roku's dragon coming to Aang to warn him about the comet? I'm not mad at this btw, genuinely just confused. I don't understand the point yet.
Onto the acting, once again very hit or miss. So far Gordon (Aang) has been one of the best. He's a very good representation of Aang's character, and i like that he brought out Aang's sassier side right away. Kiawentiio (Katara) so far has been really good too, and i like her chemistry with Gordon. I was prepared for Ian (Sokka) to be much worse than he ended up being, and a lot of jokes in the first episode did end up landing for me. Unfortunately the opposite is true for Dallas (Zuko), i was expecting his performance to be better than what it ended up being. It's not bad per se, but definitely less refined than i was hoping. Same for Paul (Iroh). I don't like the way he delivers some lines at all (especially the Jasmine Tea lines, it's way too forced, i don't actually believe he likes jasmine tea rn. In the original uncle barely mentions which tea he's drinking, and only once asks for jasmine tea bc it's his favorite. Otherwise he always just says "cup of tea" and never mentions the flavor. Idk why but the emphasis on jasmine tea really bothered me lol). I really liked Azula so far. Elizabeth brought a very cutthroat energy, which is precisely what i'd expect from a character like Azula. Daniel Dae Kim was also just everything i was hoping for and more. I'm hoping to see more of him (for his acting... no other reason.......)
Idk why but i was elated at seeing the cabbage merchant and hearing him say the line. Best moment of the whole show so far (and that's saying a lot i think lmao).
The music is very good. Some of the placement of the more dramatic music is a bit awkward? Like moments that i feel should have a low quiet melody seem to have a more dramatic flow which makes the scene lose emotional value to me. Maybe that's just my preference though. I like the nods to the original music throughout the show, especially for Kyoshi, the fire nation theme as well as the avatar theme, and then the exact same credits music as the original. I love the more epic/dramatic version of the avatar theme.
Overall, i am enjoying myself. I wasn't expecting greatness from this adaptation, and so far i'm remaining kind of neutral i think. It's not absolutely horrible, and i'm not cringing every five seconds. Of course it's never gonna compare to the beauty of the original animation. That's always going to remain untouchable to me. And this adaptation obviously does not come close at all. But it's fun, i guess, so i'm gonna keep watching.

ATLA Live Action Final Thoughts
So I'll start by saying that I went into this show with zero expectations (including the expectation for it to be any good at all) and focused more on questions like: How is the acting? Does the writing make sense? Is the story decent? Do we have emotional scenes?
I didn't care about sticking to the og ATLA's ships, lore, or any of the details really. Even changes to the characters were fine with me. But the most important question of all is: Does it work?
The answer:
No.
There are lots of well thought out NATLA critical reviews out there, so I'll try to keep this short. NATLA tweaked a lot of things, tried take elements of the og and make them subversive, changed the themes, completely nerfed Katara, watered down almost everyone else...and I could go on and on. But essentially, NATLA was a "remix" that stayed too close to the original in that the changes they made felt like empty imitations and clumsy efforts to improve on the og. They really should have created a completely different story while keeping maybe a handful of elements of the og. And even if they changed core traits of the characters, that would be fine. It just has to work...and it didn't.
So some main points:
The acting was terrible to ok for the most part. Overall stiff and stilted with almost nonexistent chemistry. Sokka, Jet, Ozai, and June (😍) were the standout actors. Katara had one facial expression and one tone of voice 95% of the time.
Ships I actually enjoyed: Sukka, turnip Jetara, sokka x hahn (hakka? sahn?) and ZUKAANG
The writing often contradicted itself and there was very little emotional resonance or depth. So many lines and moments felt unearned, or simply didn't make sense.
Telling. SO MUCH TELLING. The constant exposition killed so much in this show. I groaned almost every time an actor opened their mouth.
Katara. Why was she in this story again?
The only time the show felt fresh and interesting was the spirit world segment with visions and flashbacks in episode 5...the one time they took ideas from og ATLA and truly remixed them and it was actually decent to good.
The Blue Spirit episode (ep 6) was amazing (relatively speaking lol), and I think it's because Bryke co-wrote this episode AND it was pretty faithful to the og AND the Pohuai Stronghold fight was incredible AND the Zukaang was even more deliciously Zukaang.
The overall plot did not feel cohesive and felt like a disjointed imitation of og ATLA.
Even if I wasn't familiar with the og, I would not have enjoyed this show because it's not good or interesting TV. One person I was watching with (who didn't see the og) left the room because "this is so bad" and "the acting is really stilted."
In the end, I'm not surprised by any of this. Animated stories usually suffer when they're translated into live action, because animation typically has much more emotional and dramatic range. And while og ATLA isn't perfect, it very nearly is because even its imperfections still manage to work in the bigger scheme of the story. Adaptations of og ATLA are pretty much doomed to fail, unless they completely rewrite the ATLA story (and I do mean completely).
Do I regret watching NATLA? That's a hard question to answer. There's no way I was watching this on my own, so I got to enjoy the unhinged company of my friends. If nothing else, watching NATLA made me want more og ATLA and sucked me back into ATLA fandom again.

So I was looking through your posts seeing if anyone brought up the recent Avatar Live Action, and I haven't seen anyone on here talk about it?
So idk if you heard but in ep 4 (and throughout the whole series) they've been mixing plots to save time(??) but for some reason they decided to have an episode that originally in the cartoon happens in Season 2. It's the Cave of two lovers which originally has Katara, Aang and Sokka going through a cave, but Sokka gets separated from them so it's just Aang and Katara and they have a whole romance plot about going through this cave and for "plot" reasons they might have to kiss. It's uncertain if they did or did not kiss.
Basically what I'm getting at is in the Live Action, it's JUST Katara and Sokka going through "the cave of two lovers" which.. odd choice having SIBLINGS do the plot of an episode that's a WHOLE SEASON AWAY, and the fact it's a ROMANCE episode!
They even have Katara say to Sokka "I'm not a little girl anymore!" ....while in the..cave...of....lovers..... odd choice fr..
I'm just saying it's a WEIRD choice having the siblings do a romance subplot that's not even supposed to happen for another season. And then have her and him in the dark, arguing about how she's "not a little girl" when us as the audience KNOWS this plot is supposed to be romantic (it's supposed to be with Katara and Aang)
In the end they get out with the power of "Familial love" and hold hands while a badgermole helps them out of the cave.
The whole time in my seat like "WTF ARE THESE WRITERS TRYING TO DO TO ME??? THIS IS WEIRD??? I'm loving it"
There's also a LOT of subtext with Azula and Zuko in the show even though they haven't been in scenes together. As well as some more, let's say "odd" choices between Katara and Sokka (romance clichés like Katara helping Sokka lace his bracers before a fight and him picking on her for liking another guy)
I've had a relative wealth of asks about the live action ATLA and I love to see all of the Katara/Sokka enthusiasm. There others are here, which I didn't answer until after you sent this in. I searched my inbox because I wanted to answer all of them at the same time, and nothing came up, but I guess there were a bunch of messages at the bottom that hadn't loaded, including yours. Anyway, those asks and in that post and this one is here, for everyone's reference.
Writers ship Sokka/Katara confirmed.
I'm glad you pointed out her line about not being a little girl anymore, because he's the big brother and has his whole complex about being the guardian. And her whole flirtation with Jet shows that she's growing up.

Undead Unluck ep.1 thoughts
[Four Years and an Anime, Baby!!!]
(Contents: Ch.1 comparison, pacing, animation)
Note: For the sake of this review series, I'm going to avoid any overt references to the later events of the manga. Anything I have to say on that topic will be relegated to their own posts, so anime-onlys can read these too if they're so inclined
And we're off to a great start!!!
Easily the thing that I'm most excited about is the new intro, expanding on To You, From Me (Fuuko's manga, for those who didn't catch the name), which we got basically no information on in the original. I do think it's a little odd that the scene we saw doesn't resemble the one Fuuko is seen reading pretty much at all, but I do like what David Production is going for with it
As a long-time fan, I thought that intro was really cool, and bodes well for how David plans to adapt the manga going forward, likely expanding on or adding scenes that weren't present in the manga to help build atmosphere or context. However, my roommate, who is completely unfamiliar, was strongly confused and taken aback by the strange animation and surreal imagery, so I worry that this addition may be offputting to newcomers. Fingers crossed everyone can overlook that
Aside from that, the beats of chapter 1 are pretty much intact, though a lot of it was sadly truncated or removed for the sake of streamlining to fit the half-hour timeframe, which is to be expected even if it is a bit of a shame. I really loved Andy testing the limits of Unluck, keeping careful track of the relative size of the debris based on how long he touched Fuuko, but in the interest of time, skipping that and keeping the note about how it works is serviceable I suppose
I also think it's a little weird to have Andy and Fuuko alone at the bridge rather than drawing a crowd, especially since they're in such a crowded city, though I'm sure it's more cost-effective to only use the characters who matter instead of animating a bunch of nobodies milling about and being voiced by however many extras would be required. It picks up the pace, and gives way to a very funny reinterpretation of the events of the manga with Andy simply rocketing his head back to where he started instead of Fuuko going to the ground to inspect what she'd done
The most important moments, being the meeting, the haircut, and the battle, were all executed spectacularly, so the connecting moments in between being less than stellar is perfectly acceptable. I don't have any trouble believing that people will enjoy themselves watching this and be engaged enough to continue on
Andy's animations were very fluid and imaginative, I particularly loved the touch of him floating the knife on a jet of his blood rather than just balancing it on his finger while letting himself bleed. The blood on Andy's teeth evaporating after Fuuko stabbed him was also a great way to indicate how Undead works, whereas in the manga his teeth are just mysteriously clean a few panels later, potentially misleading readers into thinking that it's a continuity error. Oh, and Andy's body vanishing after he tosses his head to Fuuko? It's so clear that someone on this team is familiar with the source material, adding details that would logically be present even if the author didn't portray them in the original, which is great because Tozuka is already extemely detail-oriented
I will admit, I am not the biggest fan of the voice actors. I've never really liked Yuichi Nakamura too much, and I just don't think he's the best fit for Andy specifically. Moe Kahara is a pretty new actress, I believe, and she just sounds kind of...unrefined, I guess? I'm sure she'll grow on me, or she'll get more experienced and give a stronger performance as she goes, so I'm not going to write her off, I just thought she sounded a bit generic here. Whether that's a matter of skill or direction is also debatable, so again, I'm not going to rag on her too much
The opening theme, though played without the visuals as per usual with first episodes, sounded rad, and I'm super excited to see the full thing next week. I'm sad that I have to wait for it, but I'm more than happy enough with the episode itself that I don't mind
Overall, though I obviously have to say that the corresponding manga chapter is better, I greatly enjoyed the first episode and highly recommend it both to newcomers because it does a solid job in and of itself and to manga fans because it provides a nice new perspective on the source material. I'm pretty hard to please with this sort of thing, or rather pretty easy to disappoint, so for me to walk away with a strongly positive attitude is a huge mark in this adaptation's favor
Not only am I still excited to see how this anime goes going forward, my confidence in how well it's going to present the story I love so much has only gone up, so I can't call this episode anything other than a rousing success for me. I hope you all enjoyed it too, and I can't wait for episode two!!!

i haven't even finished the ATLA show yet (i'm honestly not enjoying it all that much so i'm going very slowly) but your tags on that post about filler reminded me that i HATE how they shoved so many things like the mechanist, jet, the cave of two lovers which i guess is the cave of two siblings now, and more ALL together into two episodes taking place in omashu. it feels so rushed and takes away from the sense of adventure that the original had, in my opinion.
BIG agree! I've been rewatching the original series to cleanse my palate of the live action series and everything just feels bigger and more fun than what we got from Netflix. I PERSONALLY don't love live action remakes because I think animation is an extremely valid and unique medium that live action can't capture (I feel like a majority of my followers will agree with that), but I had to check out ATLA just to see what was up and because I loved the original so much.
I've seen a bunch of tiktoks of the actors hanging out and having great chemistry, but somehow, all that disappeared in the actual show. While yeah, some of the kids need more acting experience, I think a large part of what made it so bad was having only 8 eps for S1 when the animated show had 20, the directing and lighting made things feel flat AND Dee Bradley Baker no longer voiced Momo. Also, why'd they put Secret Tunnel in S1??? It's an S2 ep! You only have 8 eps and you didn't choose any of the bountiful stories from S1??? Weird.
Idk. I have a hard time unscrambling my thoughts and articulating critiques, but the heart of the show was gone. Aang was an entirely new character, Katara's fight with Pakku felt low stakes, Sokka felt more like a version of him you'd meet and greet at a theme park, Suki was awkward instead of badass, and Zuko didn't feel as confident/stubborn.
I do know how much work goes into making any type of show, and I do think that the cast and crew made the best of what was given to them by Netflix and their weird standards. I just don't think ANY remake of ATLA will ever stand up to the original.

Netflix's Avatar The Last Airbender thoughts part 2/5)
this is the bit about Kataang. i have so much to say.
Kataang (romance vs friendship): okay i can't restrain myself any longer; here we go. by ep 3 i started noticing how it feels like they're deliberately keeping Katara and Aang away from each other. they barely even have scenes together, they just keep getting separated every episode, and even when they are together it's very short and there is not much chemistry between them. and to be clear, i expected as soon as i originally saw the casting that their romantic relationship won't be explored, at least in this season, and that's completely fine - it'd be pretty weird even, if they leaned into it too much, given how visible the age difference is between the two of them. besides, other than Aang's crush, their romance wasn't really an important point in the first season of the original either, it was basically just the Fortuneteller episode that dealt with the subject. so yes, no romance between them, completely fine. in the original though, book 1 established strong foundations for their friendship, for how and why they see each other as a family, why they love and trust each other, and given a background to how that then later evolves into romantic love. here, so many of their big moments are taken from them or changed.
Kataang (secret tunnels) i can excuse the cave of two lovers changes because it was a nice exploration of Katara's and Sokka's relationship, even if i didn't love most of what else they did with it (the whole thing with the badgermoles was kinda dumb). it was also originally not a S1 moment, so who knows, there's still the option for it to come back later in the show. which i really hope it does because my Kataang heart would be so sad if it doesn't.
Kataang (avatar state): i really disliked Aang being able to control the avatar state on his own by remembering Gyatso, because it was both too early in his own story, and i felt that it ripped the carpet out from underneath one of the most defining moments of Katara and Aang's connection - her being the only one who can help Aang control the avatar state for a loooong time before he learns how to do it on his own. i think it was important that it happened so early in the original show, and while i enjoyed the way they recreated that moment to fit it in the last episode, when it actually happened, it felt... somehow more unearned than in the original where it happened after like an hour of screentime. obviously, the idea here was that we'll have a whole season of them bonding, watch them become true friends, see how much of a family they are to each other, and THEN have this scene where Katara helps Aang control his fear and pain, because they now have this real, built up connection. which is a good take! if that's how it went, i may even like how this change reflects on their relationship
Kataang (lack of affection): however, that's not how it went. these two barely even TALK for most of the season. they have very few scenes together, and 1 (one!) hug - btw there is very little tactile affection between them, no hugs, no reassuring touches on the arm, no nothing. and i know not everyone likes physical affection, but i never got that vibe from the Aang and Katara of the OG show, they hugged, Katara kissed Aang's cheek, i vaguely recall that they held hands and had multiple "hand on your shoulder" moments as well. a huuuuuge offender of this is episode 4, when Katara, Sokka and Aang are reunited. Aang collapses after dropping the boulders, Katara runs to him, asks if he's okay and then just... stands next to him, awkwardly. like... that scene was begging for a hug, or at least a helping hand, or dusting him off. i couldn't feel the relief of the characters to have been reunited, even though it was thematically super important in that moment. there is a lack of love and connection, there is a lack of trust and bonding; i mean Katara bonds more with Jet than Aang, and Aang bonds more with Zuko than he does with Katara. the show even explicitly compares Aang's and Jet's impact on Katara's waterbending, and basically says that her connection with Jet is better for her than her connection with Aang. which, i know there is a part of this fandom that doesn't like kataang that likes to say Aang is no good for Katara, that he's just holding her back, i'm not gonna get into that, all i'll say is that i disagree.
No Kataang? and even if they don't want to do kataang at all (which is a little meh, since i love kataang, i just hope that if they don't do it, they don't give an alternate romantic partner to either of them), i want to see Katara and Aang at least being the close friends that they originally were. i can live with them not falling in love eventually, if that's where the show is going, since my ships are rarely canon anyway, but i want their friendship to mean something to both of them. even if i ignore where this leads in the OG series, it's still lackluster, because the show sure is telling us they're very important to each other, but doesn't do a whole lot to demonstrate it. you hear them saying they're a family, but you don't really feel it, which i think is probably because of all these adventures we got to see in the original that were only mentioned in passing in this one

I'm 5 eps into Avatar and I'm very... mixed
Now Avatar is one of my most precious shows. For the longest time, Avatar and Sex and the city were my only shows. And then Stranger Things and Barry entered my life and they all became my top 4 (would love a fifth but Lost and OITNB ended so terribly)
These are non-animes ofc
Let's just say my Avatar weekend was planned months ago, and been getting through a few a day
By the end of ep 3 I had thoughts, and by the end of ep 5 I had basically the same thoughts
My biggest con with the show, bc I cant, currently, understand the motives behind it, is... why are they showing season 2 scenes??? And characters??
Like... season 1 of the animated series has 20 eps that are 20 mins each, and season 1 of the live action has 8 hour long eps. There is enough content from season 1 of the animated series to fill your show, no???
Like Ozai's reveal is season 3, but we knew of Ozai's casting quite early, and idk, I dont mind them showing him. But Azula? And Mei and Ty Lee? Why??
And the Owl??? Why??????????? Is it to make Toph the only big reveal/new character in season 2 or something? I've no clue.
But anyway. The bulk of the changes I actually dont mind. I think they did it in a way that flows well. However, they kinda cause something that is truly essential to the story to like... not happen.
So in ep 3, they go to Omashu. Instead of it being like in the OG, they decide to combine the Jet episode and the Northern Air temple episode, INTO the Omashu episode so that the 3 main characters go off and do their own thing. Aang with the wheelchair kid Teo up the mountain (tho they didn't fight off any firebenders which is a fave scene of mine in the show), Sokka with the mechanist talking about the blimp (accurate enough), and Katara off with Jet (accurate enough but would have liked their hideout to be up in the trees, would have been awesome scenery and also made more sense, y'know, being a hideout).
So what this created was separation, and the characters had just gotten to know each other by this point. With the show being only 8 eps, I kinda need to see them connecting more lol this show has a heavy friendship and love theme. Aang and Katara have literally only talked about waterbending every time they've spoke (and Aang has not waterbended once even tho he was an immediate natural at it, but whatever about that).
Again, I didn't mind that they made all these stories happen at Omashu, instead of one of them being Omashu, one of them being at the Northern Air Temple, and the other being in a pretty forest. Missed out on great scenery but, again, wtv.
The most important thing to me is that I need these characters to build their bond first and foremost. Then those changes would matter less.
Even the ep after that, the ep that Omashu should have originally centred around, was Aang meeting Bumi without Sokka and Katara. And instead of Aang and Katara in the love tunnel (since they're basically implying Aang and Katara are not gonna be a thing), they show Sokka and Katara's sibling love as a mean's of escaping the tunnel.
So we're at ep 3 and 4 by this point and they've been separated from Aang the whole time.
Changes from what I can remember off the top of my head (that I want to assume, are for a reason, so I'm not going to say they're changes that I hate, I just, currently, don't get them):
Aang is mildly playful, but defo not Aang level of playful. I'm not expecting him to go penguin sledding or ride the elephant koi, but idk........... something. Anything. It would have been fun if they made him play airball at least. I'm glad there was at least a brief BRIEF scene of them using the mailing system in Omashu.
There's no room at the air temple that shows all the past Avatar statues, which glow when Aang goes into the Avatar state which basically alerts the world he's awakaned. People just kinda........... learn he has awakened. Somehow. But Kiyoshi's statue on Kiyoshi island glowed and it led to a cool scene.
Again, Aang not knowing any waterbending. I wanna believe they've a reason for this.
Zuko doesn't have any moment where he shows any sorta, idk... respect or fear of Aang? Like he hasn't witnessed Aang show power enough to impress him
Zhao and Zuko didn't fight, another fantastic scene to show Zuko's character
Currently no pirates or foretuneteller, but may happen in the next
Iroh's dialogue is a bit... well... its different...
Changes I thought were fine:
Aang can sorta fly
Their discovery of Appa not being as dramatic was fine to me. Classic OG series moment of Sokka realising Appa could fly but I didn't mind them just getting straight to it
Aang not revealing he's the avatar but Gran-gran doing it instead
Aang already having the bison whistle given to him by kid!Bumi
The air temple backstory and Gyatso's speech to Aang not being in a flashback but in the spirit world
Zuko has a briefly important journal
The scroll being given to Katara by her gran instead of stealing it from pirates
Idk why Suki has a mother, she's not really relevant, but its fine
Azula shoots arrows, which is cool
Azula's reveal was half-cool and half-bad. I liked her in the scene, everyone else was an idiot. Did they think it would be that easy?
Aang and Iroh have had two scenes involving a prison together
Koh the face stealer was introduced early instead of during the North Pole eps where he tells Aang who the moon and ocean spirits are, which means he's going to find that out some other way in those eps.
Kioshi giving Aang wisdom before Roku
Katara and Sokka dont come down with a random illness which results in Aang looking for frogs and getting captured by Zhao and saved by Zuko
Scenes I really wish they'd kept:
Okay, this one was really important to me, bc it was the exact moment I fell in love with the show in 2005. Aangs first Avatar state moment.
In order, Aang playfully escapes some firebenders with some slick moves. An alert is made that he's escaped. Him and Zuko have a brief fight (Agni Kai music heck yeah), Aang escapes and attempts to jump off the boat with his glider, Zuko stops him and attacks Aang and then he falls into the ocean. Katara calls his name, he awakens his Avatar state and knocks out Zuko and the firebenders and then Sokka and Katara save him. And then Zuko and Iroh attack Appa and Aang redirects it.
Instead, Aang fights absolutely nobody. There's no alert that he's escaped but Zuko somehow knows?? Aang jumps off and successfully uses his glider and gets onto Appa. Zuko attacks and Katara uses BIG waterbending to save everyone.
Tumblr media
That moment adapted well could have sold this show for me.
In addition to that:
The "Avatar" test that proved to the Air Nomads that Aang was the Avatar. Instead they just kinda showed that he was more gifted than everyone else so that's how they knew.
The big change I think most people were a fan of:
Kiyoshi's appearance. Bad. Ass.
What I like:
Sokka and Zuko. I think the casting is fantastic for these two.
Appa and Momo.
People actually being burned alive. Idk, it shows the brutality more in this version
Azula has potential
What I h a t e:
Okay. Ep 1 31:38. This scene kinda shows a few things at once. Its just so… strangely written and acted by everyone except Sokka. Aang overacts (throughout the show), Katara underacts (throughout the show). The way Aang plays with the kids is odd. The way he doesn't even have any sort of reaction to seeing Katara for the first time sucks. Katara looks depressed most of the time and she just stands around a lot without a word to say. Tbh she doesn't even really know how to stand without looking awkward.
Katara did not give Aang her motivational and heartwarming speech at the air temple which basically told Aang that the three of them are now family. He just sorta… calmed himself down. All she did was call his name
Again, the lack of relationship these two have
Ozai continuously praising Zuko and Azula being insecure? So so SO early???
The season 2 stuff. There's enough to gather from season 1 so this makes no sense to me. They've basically shown the swamp ep already. And the swamp ep is where Aang first see's Toph, y'know, super important fan favourite character. Which means she's going to get a different introduction.
Bumi's "tests"? WHERE WERE THEY? HE KEPT SAYING TESTS BUT NONE HAPPENED. ALSO THE LAST ONE IN THE ORIGINAL WAS ABOUT GUESSING WHO HE WAS, BUT AANG KNOWS WHO HE IS THE SECOND THEY MEET. SO HIS CHARACTER WAS COMPLETELD CHANGED. WHY THO.
Uh, that's all I can remember off the top of my head (I just went to check that one timestamp, but other than that, this is all from memory).
I've one ep left and then the last two will be in the North Pole eps.
I know the one ep left before those two will feature Roku's appearance (hopefully on a dragon but prob not) and Zuko as the Blue Spirit as a combo ep, which I think is also combining the Sokka and Katara sick episode but instead of them being sick, they're about to be eaten by Koh (which makes him more menacing, something the OG show didn't do so I'm fine with this). I just hate that these characters are separated so much.
BUILD THE BOND GODDAMIT.

Elvis and Austin!Elvis Ask Game
I was tagged by @sapphirescripts, @aconflagrationofmyown, @blurredcolour, @loving-elvis, @mesbouquins, @heisatroubleinapinksuit, @lindszeppelin, @powerofelvis, and @karamelcoveredolicity! Thank you all so much 💕
These questions were put together by @aconflagrationofmyown, and the original post can be found here.
Tumblr media
When and what was your first exposure to Elvis Presley? I genuinely do not remember. He's always been there, since the very beginning; I don't think there was ever a time when Elvis wasn't a part of my life.
And what was your first impression? I never really had a first impression since he was always just sort of there, but I've loved Elvis for such a long time. When I was younger I viewed him as a sort-of guardian angel. Other kids had imaginary friends, and then I had Elvis.
Lace shirts or jumpsuits? It's gotta be jumpsuits. Something about them makes me go absolutely feral. They're so sexy for absolutely no reason. Yes, even the gaudy ones.
You can steal one of Elvis/Austin’s outfits, what’s it going to be? There are so many good ones! This is such a hard question! The red blouse with the belt is such a good outfit for both real Elvis and Austin!Elvis that I'm going to have to pick that. And as for Austin himself, I love a Canadian tuxedo.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
C’mon, we know you’ve been watching/reading old interviews and random footage of the man, so what’s your favorite random Elvis quote? That one about how being in the army didn't change his opinion on rock n' roll music because he was in tanks and they rock and roll quite a bit. He was so damn proud of himself for that joke and it's terrible. And this isn't a quote, but I love how much he calls people boy. He's Southern Southern.
Did you find Austin Butler’s lips distracting despite them being in a movie about the King of plush upper lips? (Be honest now) Who didn't! That shot of him putting the ice pack over his eyes as they're seguing into the Burning Love montage had me laser-focused on his lips. He needs to drop the name of his injector fr.
What’s an aspect of Elvis’ character you wish more people appreciated? His kindness, his generosity, his humour, his gratitude. There are just so many aspects of him that should be appreciated more that it's hard for me to list them all, let alone without getting emotional.
You meet Col. Tom Parker for the first time, forewarned with the knowledge of what a scumbag he is, what do you do?: A. nothing, you’re a coward who doesn’t care about abused golden-hearted men B. you give the Colonel a stern telling off C. you encourage Elvis to leave him and break the contract E. you slap a legal document against that fat suit and declare “Mrs. Claus is bringing you a lawsuit” F. you waste no time with formalities, it’s a letter opener to the jugular for that piece of trash A real toss up between E and F here.
What was your favorite aspect/scene from the Elvis 2022 movie? I loved what a spectacle it was. Everything was so overwhelming and fast-paced, which is perfect for telling his story. I can't imagine how overwhelming his life must have been.
As for my favourite scene, the Vegas rehearsal just makes me so joyful, and that moment right before the Lousiana Hayride where he's nervous at the water fountain and then starts singing "I'm flyin away". Seeing that the first time in theatres I was so taken aback by how perfectly Austin captured Elvis.
You can choose only one song or piece of media to convince someone to become an Elvis fan, what is it going to be? Either the '68 Comeback Special or Elvis (2022).
How many children would you give Elvis Presley from your own -or theoretical- womb? (listen to the beast in ya, your feminism won’t serve you here) As many as he goddamn wants. I am a dead man's whore.
Where are you hanging out with EP, his bedroom with the teddy bears, Club Handy, his private jet or Graceland? Graceland! It was his safe space. His haven. I would love to be able to witness him in complete comfort like that.
What is the peak Elvis era? warning, this says an awful lot about you… 70s!!!!!!!!
How long have you been an Austin Butler fan (be honest now, God is watching) I'm gonna come clean -- only since I saw the movie. I did not even know this man existed before that. Austin, sweetie, I'm so sorry.
What kind of Elvis chick are you? -a 1950’s prospective wife material that he’s already sampled, a 1960’s filmset fling or a Vegas torrid backstage affair? I've said it before and I'll say it again: I am anything he wants me to be. The Vegas affair do be hitting different though.
Is Austin Butler an honorary southerner now? Answer options: A. hell no, California can keep his sweet cheeks. B. hell yes, he’s practically been possessed by the soul of the King of the South I'm not even American (even though I am moving to the South in about three months), so I don't think I'm exactly qualified to answer this, but I'm gonna go out and say no. He's too Cali at heart.
Pick your poison in the fan-fiction realm: angst, fluff, smut, fluffy smut, angsty fluff, angsty smut?…or is reading about Elvis Presley an acknowledged health hazard? Besties, it's me. Smut.
Spit or swallow for this man? (And if you don’t understand this question move right along) I AM SWALLOWING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would Gladys approve of you? Take your above answer into consideration Probably not 💀
Which of Elvis’ cars is your favorite? His Stutz Blackhawk III. I don't often think cars are sexy, but that shit's sexy.
What are your odds for besting this man at karate? Less than zero; he would body me. And I'd thank him for it.
If you could meet Elvis and have enough composure to tell him something, what would it be? I would thank him. He means so much to me, and it hurts that I'll never be able to thank him, or even let him know. And I'd want to listen to him. We share an interest in the spiritual, and I would love to discuss it with him. But mostly thank him.
What’s a hobby or pastime of yours you wish you could share with Elvis/Austin!Elvis? I'm not too sure! I think it would be interesting to read his tarot, though.
What’s the Elvis 2022 quote you’ve been mumbling to yourself ever since you heard it? "This isn't Christmoos!"
What are your top 3 go-to Elvis songs? This is so hard to pick omg. I'm gonna go Suspicious Minds, Power of My Love, and either Burnin' Love or Heartbreak Hotel.
If you could spare him one tragedy what would it be? His death. The drugs. The ridicule. So many things.
Is there a modern artist that sorta scratches for you the itch that Elvis’ absence leaves? Not at all. He was gone for decades before I was born, but I miss him more than I think I've ever missed anyone. It feels like a piece of me is missing.
How did you react at the end of the movie when In the Ghetto started to play A. I got up and fixed a snack because I have no soul, B. I left feeling alarmingly horny, C. I was impressed but didn’t realize how affected I was until days later when it was still with me D. I cried buckets they had to bring in a mop E. I may have appeared emotionless but in fact my soul was leaving my body and I don’t think it’s returned quite yet A solid D. I've seen the movie around 15 times now, and it still makes me bawl like a baby every time.
If you’ve got a favorite gif or photo insert it here and bless us all There are so many it's hard to choose. This has me acting up, though.

Your analysis is really thought you should if you have timeshare them more often. Do you think something 'big' is going to happen with Rina in the next episodes? And is something you wish or would rather things go slow?
Thank you, I'm glad you like them!
I mean, I know something big is going to happen later this season. I won't post it because it is technically a big spoiler, even though a lot of people know about it by now. I'll just say...if you know, you know and if you have no idea what I'm talking about, you'll find out soon.
As for this coming ep, I went into a little more depth in my other recent asks, but I'm guessing that this "big" Rina moment in ep 6 is not necessarily going to be a moment that is between Ricky & Gina, but rather Ricky getting emotional over his feelings for Gina, sparked by overhearing part of a conversation between Gina & EJ after Color Wars (I talked about what I think that potential conversation could be about here).
There were a few references to 206 in 305. Gina mentioned that she isn't good at improvising, with Ashlyn echoing that sentiment ("I think we've already established that I can't improvise." "She's awful.") which is a direct reference to Gina & Ash doing improv in 206, where Gina was so distracted by her lingering feelings for Ricky and whether or not to move to Lousiana to be with her mom that she couldn't follow the rules and ended up unintentionally messing up the game. (The rule of improv is to always say "yes", but Gina was so in her head, so confused -- should she stay or should she go? -- that all she could think to say was "I don't know." and "I'm not sure.")
+ Before wdykal, Carlos literally says the title of 206 to Gina ("Yes, and..."). Then, after wdykal, Ashlyn tells Val that Ricky & Gina "have history", which serves to remind us that Ash is the one other person that really knows about their history because Gina told her (& only her) about opening night, about telling Ricky she wouldn't quit on them if she wasn't moving away. & When did Gina tell Ash that? When did we see that opening night flashback? 206. Also, and this one's a little more ambiguous and probably not intended to be seen as a 206 reference, but when Ricky told Gina that it's "hard not to just say what you feel" it did remind me of the flashback, when Gina was trying to tell Ricky how she felt about him, about their relationship, and he said, "Say it."
When Gina turns to look at Ricky in 303, after Ash says, "I guess there's always something new to learn." Ricky is already looking at her. They share a moment. & then, in 304, Ricky tells Jet "I know you mean well, dude, but you don't know the full story." in regards to his relationship with Gina. We've gotten moments of Ricky's POV, sure, but there's still so much left unsaid at this point and it feels like we've been given hints that Ricky's full point of view is coming, in a big way. Is it crazy to think that maybe the writers were trying to remind us of 206 because that's when we found out something we didn't know (the flashback) that gave us context to exactly why Gina had been acting the way she was and changed the way we saw the first half of season 2? Are they trying to tell us that we're about to find out Ricky's perspective on that night, to give us context as to why he acted the way he did, that will change the way we view his behavior in season 2?
I don't know that I see another flashback coming (they got lucky with the last one, since it was originally shot to be included in the s1 finale if the series didn't get picked up for a second season) but I do genuinely think we'll get Ricky talking (to Jet, probably) about Opening Night for the first time. I think we'll finally get that "full story", or at least a lot more of the story than we have now.
At least that's my opinion, which kind of contradicts what I've heard from people who have seen the episode. Both Tamia & Sam talk about ep 6 like it's a pretty mellow, fun one, so I'm not sure what to believe at this point.
As for your second question, I'd like for them to go slow, yeah. I don't think they will get together officially in the finale (nor do I want them to). Gina will have recently broken up with EJ, so it doesn't make sense for her to jump into a relationship with Ricky immediately afterwards + getting together in the finale is a bit of a curse (Rini in s1, pw in s2) that I'd like to avoid lol. I think that the finale will leave things open for them. They'll both (finally) know how the other feels about them, but they're not quite ready to jump into anything yet. They drive home from camp together, agreeing to just...see what happens.

"EP 54: Is "Magical Princess Minky Momo" intended for lolicons ?"
Tumblr media
第8話 ー 婦人警官ってつらいのネ,1982
Here is the translation of the article called "第54回 『ミンキーモモ』はロリコン向けか?" from Takeshi Shudo's blog
"Magical princess Minky Momo, with its script, staff, and cast doing as they pleased, continued to be successful. Fan letters received by the TV station were mostly written by children or on behalf of children, and as originally intended, it was considered a moderate success as a girls' anime. Surprisingly, fans of middle school, high school, and women in their 20s who became fans of 'Sengoku Majin GoShogun' occasionally sent their thoughts and fan letters for 'Magical Princess Minky Momo'."
Teenagers who were fans of "Sengoku Majin Goshogun" are now in their early twenties, still following along with "Magical Princess Minky Momo". This was actually the goal from the beginning - to create an anime that both parents and children could enjoy together. It was meant to be entertaining for adults as well, without being overly moralistic or just for kids.
I thought that the free-spirited and anything-goes story and character setting made it possible. However, in front of the studio where the dubbing for "Magical Princess Minky Momo" was taking place, the number of clearly high school-age or older men gradually increased. At first, I thought they were fans of Mami Koyama, who voices Momo, but they didn't make any noise or fuss even she entered the studio, they just stared silently.
They have something in common, wearing outlandish clothes... or rather, not caring about their own clothes... and for some reason, they all have big paper bags. Quiet, dark, even when the sky is clear, they give off a gloomy feeling as if it's raining only above their heads. "What are those boys?" When I asked the staff, they answered easily. "Oh, those are otakus." I had heard of otakus before, but it was my first time seeing them in person.
I never had any intention of denying otakus. When humans become obsessed with something, they often lose sight of their surroundings. It is common for their minds to be consumed by that one thing. Prominent scientists, for example, may only think about the topic they are working on, neglecting everything else, which could be considered a form of science otakus. There are also people who become obsessed with modes of transportation like airplanes, cars, and ships. Some people become obsessed with weapons like guns and cannons, or military vehicles like fighter jets and tanks. As for myself, I didn't mind making plastic models when I was a child. It's okay for people to like robots as fictional weapons.
There are enthusiasts for everything. You can't criticize someone's hobbies. There are probably people who are into anime as a hobby. Usually, people who are obsessed with their hobbies are called "maniacs." I don't know the details of how the word "maniac" evolved into being called "otaku." Some people say there is a difference between "maniac" and "otaku," but I don't really understand the difference. I recently read a book by someone called the "Otaking," but to others, being an otaku means nothing, just someone who collects things in their favorite field and is obsessively knowledgeable about it. I couldn't see much difference between being a passionate fan and a maniac.
However, it seems that while hobbies of enthusiasts are personal, otakus tend to gather and have a habit of showing off their otaku level. It was also unclear why there are male anime otakus who are fans of anime with girls as the main characters, but the story that inspired "Magical Princess Minky Momo" had a boy as the main character.
It didn't seem like a bad thing that male fans were increasing for "Magical Princess Minky Momo". I thought that the story must be interesting for men as well. When I asked a girl who was a fan during "Sengoku Majin GoShogun", she said that there are quite a few male fans of "Magical Princess Minky Momo". I also saw a doujinshi called "Gekisou Gurume Poppo" featuring Minky Momo. It was an interesting parody book.
I saw some doujinshi made by girls, and many of them were cute and girly. In conclusion, I found that fans of "Magical Princess Minky Momo" are generally bright and harmless people. However, it is also true that there are many unusual fans of "Magical Princess Minky Momo." One woman, who is also related to the sponsor toy store, even opened a bar called "Minky Momo."
The feature is that there is a facility like a small nursery so that even couples with small children can drink alcohol. It is said that there is a need for a restaurant where people who want to drink alcohol can do so with their children without worry. I was at a loss. I was taken aback. Is it normal for parents with children to want to drink alcohol? I expressed my opinion that I would like such establishments to be stopped.
Some of the staff members who were not with their children apparently went out for drinks, but I don't know what happened to the bar "Minky Momo" afterwards. By the way, the otaku fans of "Minky Momo" who were initially harmless began to receive strange reviews as the broadcast reached the middle. It turns out that male "Minky Momo" otakus are lolicons. This was quite shocking. Needless to say, lolicon is short for Lolita complex.
This word comes from the novel "Lolita" written by American writer Nabokov, in which a middle-aged man becomes obsessed with a 12-year-old girl named Lolita. The novel caused a huge controversy at the time of its publication, being considered immoral. By the way, Stanley Kubrick adapted it into a film called "2001: A Space Odyssey." (??)Nowadays, the term "lolicon" is used quite casually, and Lolita fashion has become popular among some girls, but it was not like that during the time of the character Minky Momo from "Magical Princess Minky Momo." It was a Lolita complex in the literal sense of the dictionary.
After all, it is about regarding young girls as objects of sexual desire. It falls into the category of perversion in psychology and psychiatry. There was a concern in a child consultation where a 12-year-old boy said, "I am a 12-year-old boy, but I have developed feelings for a 12-year-old girl. Am I a lolicon?" This is nothing to worry about, it is rather common. The real issue is when teenagers or men in their 20s and 30s view young girls as objects of sexual desire.
In the case of the uncle in the original "Lolita", I somehow understand it to some extent. It may not be impossible for me to be fascinated by a seemingly innocent girl. It may be a word like Lolita complex because it is something that can happen in the adult world. However, it is strange for a young man who has no proper sexual relationship with real women to make a girl, let alone an anime girl, the object of his sexual desire, both in the past and now.
There are various forms of love, so while anything is allowed, I would like you to date with a real woman before seeking a romantic partner in anime. It seems strange biologically for a man to avoid real women because they are uncomfortable and instead escape to two-dimensional anime characters or emotionless three-dimensional figures. If the partner is alive, they have substance, so I think even same-sex love is decent. In the UK, same-sex marriage is already recognized.
Of course, among male fans of "Magical Princess Minky Momo," those with old-fashioned lolicon tendencies are likely in the minority.
However, if I were the creator of Minky Momo, I wouldn't want such a man to come near it. It is natural to want to protect Minky Momo from lolicons. From the middle of "Magical Princess Minky Momo," at least in terms of the script, I decided to thoroughly eliminate any attitude of Minky Momo being submissive to men. Times have changed, and now lolicons and moe characters have become profitable, but "Magical Princess Minky Momo" intends to stay clear of that. However, once a work is released, it belongs to the viewers, not the creators.
It is up to the audience to decide whether "Magical Princess Minky Momo" is the original or main source of lolicon anime, but as the creator, it is quite unpleasant. Furthermore, when I hear stories about anime magazines spreading baseless rumors that "Magical Princess Minky Momo" was consciously created to target lolicon, I feel like storming the editorial department. But why did it have to come to this in this day and age?
As girls become more independent, could it be that the mental age of men of the same generation appears childish and is no longer taken seriously by them?
Women, please spend time with men of the same generation. The way otaku immerse themselves in something is almost worth encouraging compared to living aimlessly. However, lolicon is not allowed. If that fantasy becomes reality, it's even scarier. It's already a crime. Intergenerational sexual love should be between consenting adults.
It's fine for adults to have a sexual relationship between an 80-year-old and a 20-year-old. I just admire it. At least, the script for "Magical Princess Minky Momo" was written by people who have no interest in lolicon."

Live Reacting to Live Action AtLA - ep 4
Nothing about this is spoiler-free. You have been warned. Skip til after you've seen if you're worried.
..
Okay, just like with the first three, this will be my space to blather my way through the 4th NAtLA episode. Almost to the halfway point. Here's hoping this one brings it, cuz if there's a Bumi who is "toned down" I will be just screaming into the void. Firing it up now...
..
Well. At least they let Katara be the one to be out looking for Aang. I feel like she hasn't gotten enough "umph" in this version.
Secret love cave is turning into secret haunted tunnels. *sigh* Gonna guess this change won't be one I like.
Wait, what? They're skipping WAY THROUGH a ton of Bumi lead up. Straight to instant knowing. *deep breath*
Yay, she gets a water skin now an-- oooh, Jet's back. Kick his ASS, girl! One hope speech then his stubborn ass goes down. YES! Yes that WAS you!! woohoo.. okay, favorite part so far. LOL
Pun game is strong with Bumi.
At least we still get the nomads, but.. this bit isn't even a book 1 thing. And it being here is gonna probably mean skipping a fairly iconic part from the OG.
Wait, Iroh dropped a pai sho tile? But that stinky sandal turned out to be an MVP later.. lol..
Okay, still having crazy Bumi trials of a sort.
Sokka's instincts showing up to lead them out of the cave. I kind of love their sibling fights. Giving me hope for Katara getting better writing as we're going on, because she clearly acts well (and her imperfect, layered self was always my favorite and I want none of that toned down.)
Guard/Iroh exchange is actually a pretty standout scene, acting-wise. And Iroh's expressions.. oh man, if those expressions didn't hit you in the feels enough, here's the flashback. Shades of Leaves on the vine..
Ah, sibling love. Um, okay. Yeah, still don't like it. This adaptation already has so much they cram in, no reason for them to try and reach out for more season 2 stories to shove in.
Aang and Bumi fight.. I wish that they would have Aang explain that he didn't "leave", not in this version. He and Appa were out for a midnight stroll when stuff happened to go down. What's the point of making that change if he's still letting the world think he left them? (Which, I mean, he was 12 and understandable.)
Yes!! A (very brief) mail chute ride AND a MY CABBAGES!! Some of my prayers have been answered.
Okay, and I approve the addition of this Zuko/Iroh flashback. "Everything I need is on this boat." Uncle Iroh, you and these ninjas-chopping-onions moments.
Ah, ending on Zuko ignoring an Appa sighting. Guessing that's why they were making Bumi completely hammer on Aang having run away (though he didn't) - because they were trying to get a couple points from The Storm in.
..
Alright, well. This one was a roller coaster for me. I actually did love the added scenes (the Iroh/Zuko flashbacks), and they seemed to start writing Katara better (please keep it up), and I got my tiny glimpse of a fun ride. Also got to see Katara put the smack on Jet, but the awesomeness was dampened a bit since she was immediately making excuses for him in the cave with Sokka. And then a lot of the rest of it was disappointing. Putting Cave of Two Lovers in there for no reason was a big L, and I remain frustrated by the repeated "you ran from this" stuff that is getting tossed at Aang - including by his own past life who would 100% know that didn't happen (in this version). It was a decision to change it to make it not a running away, but then there's no decision to have Aang reassure the world he never chose to leave them? Bonkers. I mean, it was frustrating enough in the original, since when he ran was when they were removing him from Gyatso.. he had been still around the temple after being told he was the Avatar, he wasn't running from that alone. But at least he was choosing to run, so I kind of "got it" then. But they changed it and now he hasn't even run and just.. meh. I'm also frustrated at the pretty big lack of showing the Gaang actually forming a close bond. It's all the little "fun" things that they cut out that just don't let us see how they're close friends.. we just have to be told at the end of the fight, I guess.

Okay, so I have recently started watching criminal minds (literally on ep 10 of first season) anyways, Spencer with a bimbo! Reader who loves to listen to him even if she doesn't understand anything, she just keeps nodding along with whatever he says and he realizes she doesn't UNDERSTAND SHIT and he tries to dumb it down for her and it turns her on because it's so sweet of him to do so-
sorry if it doesn't make sense, he has me in a brainrot
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summary: It's almost Spencer's favorite holiday, meaning he's been going on rants every chance he gets. He knows you're interested, but it's not worth getting too confused about.
Genre: Fluff
Pairing: Spencer Reid x bimbo!reader
Warnings: None
Word count: 390
a/n: couldn't think of something for him to rant about but my favorite holiday also happens to be Halloween so hope this is okay!!!
Tumblr media
It was Halloween Eve, on the jet who sat in front of you was, Spencer. The stars feeling like they were chasing after you as the jet moved.
You knew Halloween was Spencer's favorite holiday. It was obvious when he'd show up to work with a random monster masks and attempt to scare anyone who walked by.
You couldn't help yourself but ask what he was doing tomorrow, intrigued on what he spends his time doing because you knew it wasn't trick or treating.
This, of course, turned into a long rant. Your eyes focused on his as he moved his hands to express every word.
"The origins of Halloween actually date back 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which was celebrated on October 31st, on the eve of their new year. The Celts believed that the dead returned to earth that night, and so they lit bonfires and donned costumes to ward off the ghosts." He smiled as he went on, his eyes having that sparkle every time he noticed you were deep into the conversation.
"Celtic festival?" You asked, tilting your head. He shifted in his seat to get more comfortable to speak once more, "Ancient Celtic festivals included religious and seasonal events such as bonfires, harvest festivals, storytelling and music festivals, and dance festivals. Its actually quite interesting, when you read more onto their culture." He nodded, cracking his knuckles against his palms.
You asking Spencer questions wasn't bait. Although you find it quite attractive when he'd get into something, you were still always confused. Not even just when Spencer would go on rants, anything anyone would say that was slightly out of your vocabulary suddenly hitting you like a brick when you realize you don't understand.
"Huh.." You nodded, "Wait, so they kinda, invented Halloween?" Your voice always had curiosity laced inside of it, you were never not curious or confused about something you didn't quite understand.
"Uh--well..." He wanted to go on again, but you'd be even more confused if he did so. "Yeah, basically." He nodded, smiling at the way he understood he was going to have to dumb things down for you.
You subconsciously formed a smile when you realized he stopped to give a basic explanation, but at least you understood it. Or, at least some of it.

1100 words today!
... I had to watch Servant of the People this morning and it was a longer ep... then I had to do laundry (in order to get dressed...)and take a shower. Then mom asked me to do some office work for her. Go get some supplies. I wasn't sure if I had time and my mind wasn't quite right (I was a little shaky this morning?) so I couldn't decide if I could do it or if dad wanted to he could. For him it's volunteer but for me it would be paid. Maybe not quite up to it? Also I wanted to get some writing done. But all this took til like 11:30 ("had"to scroll down to end of tumblr bc it keeps refreshing... not where I left off for some reason...)
I didn't have to look at notes too much. But my mind isn't quite normal yet. Words aren't as easy. I hope this gets better. If I couldn't write... 😞
I was also thinking, if I don't start right away at 8 there is no use at all. (Plus I was a little out of sorts from having to go to car place. Didn't think i had enough time before 1 lol) But. You can at least get something done. As I proved today. So.
I'm also wondering if I should start working on my next original novel. But I'm not sure what to do. If I should fix the prequel trilogy... fix my fantasy novel... try to start my scifi novel... (I need to research All the science 1st) or start something totally different.
While writing fanfic. But I only have limited time to write. I want to write a LOT more. Maybe get something published. But I have to earn money. Focus more on that (+ main.. writing is part of main. Passion, soul. Also material for writing.... the main Focus -- global affairs/freedom, justice in truth)... Maybe do one Sellout book. Lol. So it can get popular then I can write ehat I want
Like write a popular book really fast and market it really well...
Which would be..
Even if I could sell out and write some soulless thing it would not be convincing. It would not be easy to write, I would hate it. Maybe start hating writing. Can't do that. So
Probably better ways to make money anyway. Would be nice if one of my stories would take off ...
And I would learn how to actually write... and write fast... to get my series done!!!
Why does it take so long to even write a transition scene. Maybe i don't need so long of transitions. But there is essential material in there!
Somehow I wrote short novellas before. Now a massive story again (throwback to my teen novel...hm) I was inspired by Stephen King to write a slow burn... challenge to make a long build up... which he says is better. Idk.
Well I did write a couple 100+k novels... the fantasy, the 2nd Jet sequel I tried to do, the 2nd and 3rd Jet prequels... (others?) The fanfic tho was usually under 50k. And I did several 50k novels. 1 NANO disaster (probably the worst book i ever wrote bc I didn't stop to read what I wrote thus forgot it and built on 0 foundation)

Have you seen Jet’s leak audition video? I am not sure where the video was originally posted but salazarbowen posted the video on Twitter of someone audition for a character name Jet in HSMTMTS. I am just curious who do you think Jet is talking when the actor is reading lines from a scene when the actor is auditioning for the role of Jet? I think Jet is talking to Ricky in the leak audition video.
I have! For anyone who hasn't, you can watch it here.
He's talking to Maddox in the end, and he seems to be talking to Ashlyn between 1:01 - 2:14 (because of the tarot reading comment). As for who he's talking to at 0:14, I'm not sure. He calls the other person "bro", so that narrows it down to Ricky, EJ, Big Red, Carlos and Seb. The lines don't really sound like Seb to me, but I don't feel like we have enough information to narrow it down further than that.
I don't think that Ricky's in a place yet where he'd encourage other people to join their musicals, but who knows, he may surprise me. He just didn't fully feel comfortable identifying as a theater kid yet at the end of season 2, so it's hard for me to imagine he'll get there in early season 3. If they want to transition EJ to a director/producer role on the musical next season, then him being the one to encourage Jet to join the musical would make sense. But who knows. Maybe "famous last words" is Big Red talking about his journey to joining the Wildcats.
Side note: these scenes may not even make it into the actual eps. Not all sides from auditions do.
One thing that did stand out to me about the audition is that Jet and Maddox seem to resemble season 1 Ricky and Nini. Jet, just like Ricky, sounds like a bit more of an outcast who doesn't follow the rules (Ricky did so to a lesser degree), he doesn't want to join the musical and be like the theater kids, and he thinks that he's holding Maddox back. One line stood out to me:
Jet: "Sometimes I think the best way for me to be there for Maddy is to not be anywhere near her. [...] I guess you could say I'm a liability."
Compare that with:
Ricky in 1x09: "I'm screwing up out there. I can't blow this for Nini. There's someone in the audience who could change Nini's life. She needs her best shot to impress them."
Ricky in 1x10: "It's about doing something for someone you care about."
Ricky in 2x09: "I love you so much that I've gotta let you go."
Sounds pretty similar to me. And according to the sides in this audition, Maddox reinvents herself at camp and becomes a different, more confident person there than she is at home. That sounds exactly like what Nini did at camp pre-1x01. So I'm wondering if Jet and Maddox are supposed to hold up a mirror to Ricky and Nini, and either parallel or contrast them so Ricky and Nini will reflect on their own growth and continue to move forward. Given that we've had foil pairings for Rini every season so far, I wouldn't be surprised if Jet/Maddox is supposed to be their foil in season 3.

Can I ask for more Rory salt? Right after finishing the show I didn't realize why everyone was so upset about her but now that I've rewatched I kind of understand. I'd like to hear more about your opinions on her! (Mostly bc I have 2 braincells so stuff like that flies over my head lol)
okay, granted, a Fair amount of my salt comes from the perspective of a journalism student, ie who they’re trying to portray, and also like. someone at a similar Point in their life, so. here we go. rory Salt.
like i will say she isn’t like, bonafide the Worst Character of all time, but like...... okay. like. this tracks back to one of my original and largest gripes with gilmore girls, and also a large reason of why i like the earlier seasons better than the later ones.
this post explains it very well; the early seasons (and first episodes) of gilmore girls seem to promise healing, moving forward, bettering familial relationships. the actuality of gilmore girls is the repetition of mistakes and things continuing in cycles, and often getting worse.
so, like. rory. rory’s character is established as this sweet, innocent, naive kid, with a fairly decent work ethic and big dreams to aspire to journalism and a certain level of fame (like christine amanpour, i think was the journalist she mentioned in the first day at chilton ep?) she’s smart, quiet, beginning to establish a relationship with her parents, but still a bit uncomfortable within the realm of chilton/privilege—i think this is best exemplified within the debutante episode, in which she’s uncomfortable with the premise, but goes through with it for the sake of making emily happy. same with the golfing episode with richard—she has zero interest in golf, but she gets to spend a day with her grandfather, and she wants to establish that relationship with him.
but then there’s that thing kicking in, in which gilmore girls is essentially a cyclical tragedy; rory gradually becomes more confident in herself and her abilities (becoming valedictorian, going up against paris for the speech on cspan) and in her relationship with boys; she goes after jess, and, once he leaves, lets him go and eventually is like “you shouldn’t have left me. but i’m saying goodbye to you, on my terms.” i think that s3 is where her character is strongest; she’s still sweet and shy, but she has a bit of an edge. she’s caring toward her friends, she, sure, makes the occasional mistake, but she eventually rallies from them. that’s when i like rory’s character best.
rory starts her decline in season four. this dates back to the whole cyclical thing; she’s the one who goes to her grandparents for money, echoing the original premise of the show, and a cycle starts anew. she goes to another new, prestigious school (yale) where she’s pushed to new limits.
but rory makes mistakes. she stands up for herself, yes, namely taylor when he pushes for her to be ice cream queen, but she also has a certain level of... entitlement, i suppose. like. let’s take “die, jerk.”
(i’m gonna go briefly into a journalistic tangent here, which is especially heaped by the fact i’ve been writing a lot of reviews lately. also, it applies.)
so, first of all, she takes her mom to her job. her mom. literally think about every other job in the world and, barring a “family day” at the office, please name a situation in which that’s acceptable. right? there’s basically no other situation in which that’s a thing you do when you’re being professional. (this is a repeated gripe, by the way; she often brings lorelai along. this could have been achieved with some phone calls where she hangs up and then does her job. but i digress. this goes into a whole rant on how women in journalism are portrayed in tv shows and other media, but seriously, i digress.)
then there’s the review itself. it’s mean.
“she has the grace of a drunken dock worker.” compared her to a hippo. “the roll around the bra strap,” the line about regretting how evolution had led man to stand on two feet because it led to this night. the ballerina comes to yell at her, which is wrong, but holy god, that never even should have been published. sure, it’s partially the fault of doyle, who as an editor should have stepped in, said, “rewrite the holy hell out of this,” and given her a talking-to on how reviewing should be about the performance and not body-shaming her, because yes you can give things a bad review but not to that level, but rory is the one who wrote it. and she only begins to seem apologetic when people start to react to it other than doyle; the ballerina, her mom, emily and richard. this happens a few times throughout—rory (and lorelai) never seem to realize how mean they can get until people start reacting to what they’re doing and saying.
she’s willing to write those things, read them, have other people read them, and put them out into the public, and doesn’t even consider the potential ramifications that it could have had on not only the dancer, but the ballet performance (which gets shut down, in part due to rory’s review) the costumer, the crew, everyone involved. yes, bad reviews exist, and yes, they can be brutal, but they’re almost never so personally vindictive and mean. she says she’s writing her opinion. look at how harsh that opinion is.
that’s part of why my opinion of rory takes a decline; being mean. another part of it is a certain level of entitlement.
because the revival is on my brain lately, let’s talk revival stuff. making it as a freelance journalist is hard. it’s hard work. it isn’t for a lot of people. especially in new york city, where the industry is so competitive that finding a job in journalism is a whole Thing. rory has a piece in the new yorker (not bad!) and is writing a piece for gq (also not bad, not bad at all!) about people waiting in line for a certain event.
now. let’s take, like, season four/season five rory, who compiled like three separate PILES of research for a story that wasn’t even hers, worked hard enough at chilton, a highly academically competitive school, to get valedictorian. rory is portrayed as a hard worker. she does what’s necessary for the job and to improve.
revival? whoosh, out the window!
she falls asleep during an interview for the gq job. she continually jets off to london to go see logan. she’s completely unprepared for a job interview, having absolutely zero ideas for any stories, despite the fact that freelance journalists are almost always working multiple stories and coming up with new ideas so they can, y’know, get paid. chilton offers her a job as a teacher if she gets her masters, but she turns it down, which, on one hand, sure, follow your dreams, on the other, if you’re continually complaining that you’ll take a job, ANY job, and get a very good job handed to you on a silver platter with the potential for more growth post that job with the addition of your masters and DON’T TAKE IT?!?!?!
plus, in the job interview, when she doesn’t get it, UNDERSTANDABLY, she calls the interviewer angrily saying that the interviewer practically promised her the job, despite the fact that it was a PRELIMINARY JOB INTERVIEW and there are OTHER CANDIDATES who DEFINITELY AT LEAST HAD STORY IDEAS. no matter how impressive your resume is, you have to at least show that you’re trying, because the whole thing in journalism (esp for those breaking into a business) is that EVERYONE has an extensive resume. that’s part of why it’s so competitive.
and still complains that she’s broke, in addition to the trust fund that we know she received at 25, plus whatever money richard left her in his will. if she was broke, she’d be living entirely above her means—those continual trips to london, living in a sizeable one-bedroom apartment in NEW YORK CITY, going out to eat very often.
and then just??? i could ramble more (the whole sleeping with a MARRIED DEAN thing, her partnership with logan, i could go back in and ramble about how the body-shaming is continual despite the fact that they frequently eat fattening foods and make fun of sports and are only so thin bc, well, tv magic, but also because they have Miraculous metabolisms, the way that they treat their friends, to some extent, but. yeah. here is some Rory Salt.)
