The day before yesterday I got to try a ripe pawpaw for the first time.
Someone else was supposed to come in at the center, but I was in the mood to be alone, so I fucked off into the woods at the earliest available opportunity, looking to collect more hickory nuts.
I hiked about two miles down the trail, seeking to find a little-used path as far from the center as I could reasonably make it. I was five or ten minutes down a fork in the path heading down a valley when I unexpectedly smelled something familiar: the scent of ripe pawpaws. I only knew that scent from having come upon a rotten one several days back on the trail.
I had seen pawpaw trees on the way up, but I looked around and saw nothing. I indulged a beast-like impulse: I sniffed. I turned until I was facing the direction of the scent and moved towards it. And I saw, about 50 feet away down the hillside below...a pawpaw grove
Some interesting facts about pawpaws:
The pawpaw is the largest fruit native to North America, known for its "tropical" flavor. Despite being reputed to be delicious, it is not found in grocery stores due to the fruits being far too delicate to ship without spoiling. A few people farm them, but otherwise the only way to get one is to come upon one growing wild, which is rare, because the opossums love them.
Pawpaw trees are hard to grow and take 10-15 years to produce fruit, but you can see wild ones in mature and well managed woods of Kentucky. They are small, barely trees, only about 15-20 feet tall, with trunks only a bit bigger around than a circle you can make with your index finger and thumb. They almost always grow in clonal colonies, groups of many trees that are all clones of each other due to being propagated from the roots of existing trees. They are also strictly understory trees, growing in the shade of much larger trees.
Now, an interesting fact about Eastern Kentucky: At the fringe of Appalachia, and even into parts of the Outer Bluegrass, the terrain frequently turns into very steep rolling hills.
It's hard to notice if you are in more cultivated areas that have been leveled out more, but in wilder parts you can seldom just casually walk in a straight line through the woods. Unless you are following the contour of the hills, you are either sliding and gripping saplings to slow your descent or you are climbing on all fours.
Such was the hill below me, descending at roughly a fifty-degree angle into the pawpaw grove.
I was going to get me some fucking pawpaws.
I climb down the hill by a combination of scooting, sliding, and scrabbling. After a few minutes of struggle I am standing in the pawpaw grove, alone, scanning the branches with my eyes.
The ground is littered everywhere with pawpaws, some very rotten. I see only two or three fruits remaining in the trees, and I walk around giving each tree a good shake, thinking to myself about how this is certainly an experience shared by millions of years' worth of primate ancestors before me.
After nearly ten minutes of (literally) fruitless tree-shaking, I start to eye the fallen pawpaws on the ground around me.
Some of them are perfectly fine-looking. The skin hasn't even been broken into. I pick one up.
It is very soft, but not squishy like something rotten. It is about as long as my index finger (my hands are small) and oblong. Its smooth skin is pale green and spotted with brown like a very ripe banana. I tear the skin back and give the creamy orange insides a test lick.
Friends.
It was transcendent.
Imagine the most perfect ripe mango, but with a flavor that is more banana-like, mellow and creamy and mild instead of tangy. The texture is perfectly smooth and soft unlike any other fruit. You can lick it and it will just melt in your mouth.
I am autistic and a very picky eater due to the difficult textures of many foods, and this fruit has the perfect texture. Mangos are already one of my favorite foods and this is somehow even better. I remember, deliriously, that farmers are seeking to improve pawpaws for possible commercial production, and it seems like the height of foolishness there in the pawpaw grove. There is no possible way wild pawpaws could be improved. All of creation is tainted by the Fall of Man, except for fucking pawpaws, because they are beyond the earthly tier of fruits.
I lick it like a dog going crazy on a Kong full of peanut butter until it falls apart in my hands and start scanning the ground for another.
They are all perfectly ripe and mostly untouched by bugs or creatures. I start just squishing them in my hands and licking the creamy insides. I am just planting my face in these fruits like some kind of animal. My face and hands are covered in pawpaw squish.
I go through like ten of them before returning to my senses. I've been thoughtlessly wiping my hands on my pants, and they are now more soiled than the clothes of the messiest toddler. I feel primal and connected to my ancestors. I have truly earned my Primate Card.
My mom said in the car that I smelled very strongly of something (pawpaws) so it's safe to say that literally every person I passed on the way back down the trail got a good whiff too, and likely connected it to the Pawpaw Squish that was basically all over me.

"Are you hurt?" Sizhui asks anxiously, jumping off his sword to tun towards Lady Xuanyu.
"Nah," she says, wincing as she stresses. "Well, nothing important."
"You're bleeding!" Jingyi shouts at a really unnecessary pitch. He unsheathes his sword and points it at Song Lan. "What did you do?"
"Stop that," she scolds, knocking his sword down. "Go get Xiao Xingchen and the girl. He's probably really confused right now."
Song Lan's expression clears and he bows to her before flying off.
His father jerks as if to go after him and Lady Xuanyu calls out, "Leave him be! He's doing what I said."
Lan Wangji hesitates, but nods and finally descends to join them. He towers over Lady Xuanyu, looking down at her with a fierce glare that makes Sizhui cringe even though it's not directed towards him. "What happened?"
"Found Xiao Xingchen, found Xue Yang, Song Lan killed him," she says, not even so much as lowering her eyes. "Xue Yang, not Xiao Xingchen, obviously. Wasn't this guy supposed to be killed during the war or something? It was a little before my time, so to speak."
"Song Lan is unharmed and you are not," his father says, lifting a hand to press it against the sluggishly bleeding wound in her shoulder.
Lady Xuanyu hisses at the contact but doesn't pull away. "He's a more experienced cultivator. Give me a couple hours and they'll be all closed up."
It used to take days for Lady Xuanyu's golden core to heal anything more complicated than a paper cut. She's strengthened it to the point that what would have been weeks of healing is reduced to just a day.
"He should have protected you," Sizhui says stubbornly. He'd rather she didn't have to heal at all. "Why did you run off with him anyway?"
"Had a hunch and figured I'd be back before you noticed," she says. Jingyi sputters. "Also, I don't need him to protect me, geez. He's a more experienced cultivator, but I still am one. I've gotten more hurt in training."
It's true, but Sizhui doesn't like that either. To harm ones body without cause is against the rules. Perhaps it's not entirely without cause, considering her rapid growth, but none of their teachers had ever beat them as badly as she demands the disciples beat her, and their cores had all turned out fine.
"What hunch did you have?" his father asks.
She winces and says, "Oh, you know, womanly intuition."
It's a lie and not even a very good one.
Lan Wangji's eyes narrow but they're interrupted by Song Lan returning with two people balanced precariously on his sword. Sizhui assumes the other man clad all in white must be Xiao Xingchen but doesn't know who the blind girl that looks to be about his age is.
"Xuanyu!" the girl calls out joyously, causing him to reevaluate his assessment of blind. She's being awfully familiar with his step mother. The girl leaps from the sword before it's fully on the ground and goes running towards them, shoulder pass Lan Wangji to body slam into Lady Xuanyu. "You're still alive, right? You said you would be!"
Lady Xuanyu laughs, closing her arms around the girl's shoulders. Her shoulder is bleeding again now that his father isn't keeping pressure on it. Cant the girl see that she's injured? "Yes, yes, I'm still alive. Excellent work keeping Xiao Xingchen out of the fray, A-Qing. I knew I could depend on you."
The girl - A-Qing, apparently - glows under the praise, beaming up at Lady Xuanyu, still with her arms around her waist.
What's her problem anyway?

The Yiling Laozu’s Lost Spells, A.K.A. The Weird Ones
A Collection by Mo Xuanyu

When the Yiling Laozu died his work was divided up by its use
The Lans took anything deemed undemonic, like Spirit Lures and Demonic Compasses
The Jins snuck out anything dangerous under the lie they’d destroy it
And the rest of it…it got scattered everywhere to every lowdown village and wanna be demonic cultivator.
At first, no one thought this would be a problem. It’s not like anything dangerous is out there, and not just anyone can culitvate
But they forgot two very important things: 1) no one needs to be a culivator to use demonic cultivation and 2) people will find a way to use anything
Soon the culivation world is overrun by really, really weird cases that their cultivators just can’t keep up with
And when I say weird, I do mean weird here’s a look at some of the cases:
Case 1) Giant rabbits the size of houses have been spotted in a mountain near a sheparding villiage eating all their feilds. They asked Hanguang-jun for help. Hanguang-jun went up but he did not come back down. It is suspected the giant bunnies ate him
Case 2) the dancing radishes. Every night on the full moon radishes come to life in a villiage and dance on their beds. Its not hurting anyone, but its really freaking them out
Case 3) dog begone spells. A whole villiage has lost all its dogs and no one knows why. Some of them were really expensive spirit puppies, including one jin guangyao was planning to purchase for his nephew
Case 4) the case of the running radishes. Radishes are leaving their beds a d running away as fast as thry can. Every time someone gets close they keep moving farther away
Case 5) flowers flying to lan clan ribbons and sticking. Every flower, even ones on stems. The lans are walking around covered in flowers and it is becoming a Problem.
Case 6) radishes that look like potatoes. Again? What is with this guy and radishes? This spell would have been harmless if it hadn’t been in a villiage with two rival families of radishes and potatoes. The potato family is accusing the radish family of sabatoge and the radish family is accusing the potato family of stealing their crop
Case 7) Lotus soup possession talisman. If u stick this talisman on someone, they will make lotus and pork rib soup. Always. Again and again. They can’t stop. Everything they make is soup. They’re crying.
Case 8) the peacock tail talisman. Every jin who comes into contact with this talisman will get a peacock tail. They can’t get rid of them. This is a problem.
Case 9) grass butterflies come to life. Again, not harmful, but very annoying. All children love it. All adult toy sellers do not. Their wares keep flying away. Please someone save their buisnesses
Case 10) hug jiang cheng. You must hug jiang cheng. You can’t help it. You can’t stop. If u don’t give him one hug a day you will die. Jiang cheng is furious. Fix this now.
Case 11) give Hanguang-jun compliments. Not hard, no one would notice if it wasn’t stuck to Su She. He hates it. He’s sueing for emotional damages. You better fix this quick!
And these are just the first ones! In times like this, people look to the Chief Cultivator. But the Chief cultivator is off flirting with women, so like all things, this falls to jin guangyao to solve.
So Jin guangyao decides he needs to get those documents back, and who better to send to handle the weird cases no one wants to touch than his weird half brother who’s so fasinated by demonic cultivation?
Thus Mo Xuanyu finds himself with his dream job: chasing down the yiling Laozu’s lost works! What more could he want?
The first case is easy. He goes up and finds Hanguang-jun asleep cuddled in a pile of giant rabbits. All he has to do is find out where the talisman is and remove them. The hard part is getting Hanguang-jun to stop looking like he just killed his wife. Mo xuanyu didn’t know Hanguang-jun had puppy eyes. Since when did he have puppy eyes? Eventually to make him feel better he helps him take all the rabbits to cloud recesses. And at another puppy dog eyed, gloomy look like he’s denied him his long lost lover, Mo Xuanyu gives him the talisman too. Jin Guangyao’s not happy, but really, what was Mo Xuanyu supposed to do? Not make that handsome man smile again?
The second case is a lot harder. Nothing Mo Xuanyu does gets the radishes to stop singing. No spells, not talismans, nothing. The only thing left is to dig them all up and throw them deep into the woods where no one will have to listen. Mo Xuanyu’s ears are still bleeding from their reedy songs
The third case is where Mo Xuanyu feels a bit of hope in Yiling laozu’s work really paying off. Lots of his bullies at the jin sect have dogs. If he can make them vanish, he’ll be safe! Unfortunately this spell makes all dogs leave, or none at all. And even when he finds a way to undo it, he can’t afford to copy it out because jin guangyao took one of the pups to give to jin ling, and if mo xuanyu makes the grumpy jin ling’s beloved new puppy go away, he’ll be kicked out of Koi Tower and feel bad besides
The radishes are back, but they run now. They aren’t even violent, u can’t use them for anything! They just run! It takes mo xuanyu months to catch one and track it back to its home. The radishes have built a radish villige in the forest. Radish farmers radish shop keepers and radish children. Mo xuanyu feels like he’s stepped into a children’s book. Then he hears the familiar reedy songs and it becomes a nightmare. The running radishes found the singing ones. They interbred. Now they have musical theatre radishes. Mo Xuanyu booked it out of there as fast as he can. Fuck the Yiling Laozu. Mo Xuanyu isn’t messing with that
When the flowers stick to the lan, Mo Xuanyu gives up all previous respect for the yiling laozu. He was clearly an idiot. Or a cutsleeve. Mo Xuanyu hopes he’s a cutsleeve. It would be nice to have someone like him to look up too. At least he got to see Hanguang-jun again. He was very nice and showed Mo Xuanyu the back of cloud recesses, where some very familiar rabbits were very happy to greet him.
By case six mo Xuanyu takes back every positive thought he’d ever had about the yiling laozu. He’s not just an idiot, he’s The Idiot. And the potato family and radish family are just as idiotic as he is. Why is he overseeing a trial over radishes turned potatoes? Why is everyone so invested in his investigation? What is wrong with everyone here? (It was the radish family’s son. He was trying to grow potatoes to impress the potato families daughter. They get married and invite Mo Xuanyu to the wedding)
Case seven brings Mo’s respect for the yiling laozu back. The lotus soup spell is terrifying. They can’t stop making soup, or crying. It takes everything he has to stop it, and it isn’t working. He only figures out how to fix it when he says “thank you shijie” on reflex as his infected shijie shoved some soup in his arms. That made her stop. It has to be those words exactly though. This is easy if its a girl. Not so easy when its a 60 year old elderly man.
Case 8 Mo Xuanyu loves his peacock tail. Its proof he’s a jin, and oh so stylish. He’s gonna paint his face to match. But the rest of the jin sect hate it, so he reluctantly figures out how to get rid of it. All it takes is a humble apology, which is way harder to get jins to do than it should be. The last to lose it is jun ling, not because he can’t apologize, but because he likes his tail too, since his Jiujiu told him it made him look “just like his father”. Mo Xuanyu only gets him to get rid of it by promising to sneak the talisman to him in his rooms. They can enjoy their tails together in privacy.
Case 9. Nothing Mo Xuanyu can do about those grass butterflies. He chases them around with a net anyways. Then he gives up and tells the salesmen to start selling grass butterflies in cages instead. As he leaves all the little kids in the villiage trail after him and ask if it was really the yiling laozu who did this, and does Mo Xuanyu work for him, and can he teach them? Mo Xuanyu doesn’t have the heart to tell them that the yiling laozu’s magic isn’t usally all butterflies and rainbows.
Case 10 is terrifying. Who hugs jiang cheng? How do u survive it? Fortunately by this time Mo Xuanyu has a bit of a reputation. People know he deals with “the weird stuff” so jiang cheng doesn’t kill him on sight. It still takes forever to undo the spell. Jiang cheng isn’t any help. He acts so mad, but he’s totally hugging everyone infected back just as fiercely as they hug him. Eventually they find out its another password based release. The password is “good job didi” jiang cheng storms away furiously to break things with his whip. Mo xuanyu swears he heard loud sobbing too, but he’s not saying anything.
Case 11. The yiling laozu was definitely a cutsleeve. There’s no way someone makes a talisman to compliment Hanguang-jun without romantic intent. Mo Xuanyu is privately thrilled to know this, and see what a cutsleeve can do. He is less thrilled to have to work with su she. At least the way to break the spell is funny. Seeing su she stutteringly shout how hanguang-jun is better than him in everyway and then storm out in fury made his year.
The more Mo Xuanyu works on these weird cases, the more he feels like he’s learning about the true nature of the yiling laozu. Unfortunately, most of these cases do not result in easy solutions for the jin, and Mo’s position is just as perilous as before. Worse really, since as his reputation for handling weird borderline demonic stuff, people begin to wonder how, and look to jin sect to see who trained him.
So yeah, Mo Xuanyu gets framed for incest and kicked out of jin tower. He’d always been working with the weird, how far of a stretch would it be to say he’d go mad?
Mo Xuanyu is devistated, all his contacts, all the goodwill he’d earned from other sects and villiages, all gone when that rumor gets out. He can’t bear to face them and see the disgust on their faces
So he decides to turn to the only person who’s weird enough to not judge him
The one person he has enough blackmail on to ensure it.
The yiling laozu
It takes a while, but Mo Xuanyu is very familiar with how the yiling laozu alters talismans and spells at this point, and after three years and a very handy outline from Nie Huasang, he finds a way to bring back the yiling laozu
Without dying
Staring at his hero, his idol, and the biggest pain in his ass, mo xuanyu’s mind is racing. He has so many questions. Which should he ask first? Did u ever tell hanguang-jun u loved him? How’d u handle everyone turning on u? Did u really invent demonic cultivation all on your own?
But in the end the one that slips out is: Why do u have so many spells about radishes?
Wei ying blushes “i had a lot if radishes okay?!!! They were on my mind a lot!”
“That’s an understatement!” Mo xuanyu counters. “Do u have any idea how bad radishes sing? They invented muscial theatre! Theatre!”
“Really? Can I see?!!!” Wei yings eyes light up, and Mo xuanyu realizes he’s made a terrible mistake. The only thing worse than a mad scientists spells is a mad scientist’s curiousity. He’s going to have to follow this guy around the whole of the cultivation world to try and prevent him from making things even weirder!
Ah well, at least he’s not lonely anymore.

instant manifestation 🍄

something i have noticed lately is that there has become an obsession in this community with instant manifestation. people send me asks all day long that say "i want to manifest xyz and i want to manifest it NOW. i don't want to wait i want it today or not at all."
is instant manifestation possible? of course it is!! we've all seen the success stories where people have received instant results. i've manifested instantly as well. it's 100% possible, but i still feel like the community has become a little too obsessed with manifesting instantly.
you found the law of assumption and found out that you could manifest literally anything you want. endless money, the love of your life, a gigantic mansion for free, your desired face. and you say "okay. but only if i can get it in one day or less." ???????
you have the power to get anything you want, with no limitations, just by thinking thoughts. sure, you might have to think these thoughts consistently for a few days, maybe even weeks or months. but then you will literally have your desire for as long as you want it--for the rest of your life if that's what you want!!! but you're not willing for it to take any longer than one day???
yes, it's possible to manifest your entire dream life in one day. each and every one of you are capable of doing so. but to give up on your desire and/or your dream life because you are not willing to put in time and effort to cultivate what you want??
i understand that some of you are manifesting things that have a deadline. this does not apply to you. but a lot of you need to stop setting arbitrary deadlines for your desires. for example, "i need to manifest my SP by christmas." or what? what's gonna happen if you don't manifest them by christmas? are you no longer going to want to be with them? are you not gonna want your desire anymore?
9/10 times all setting a deadline does is add unnecessary stress to your manifestation. "omg its x amount of days until my deadline and i still don't have it oh no i need to affirm more i must be doing something wrong" etc. or, the deadline will come and go and you will continue manifesting your desire, but now your confidence is shaken and you feel discouraged. you set another deadline and the process repeats itself over and over again until you’ve created the limiting beliefs that you just can’t manifest, that you’re bad at manifesting, that manifesting is impossible for you. sound familiar?
 stop making arbitrary deadlines for your manifestation because at the end of the day if it comes and goes and you still don't have your desire you are still going to want it.
let me give you a little anecdote:
in 2020 i wanted to manifest a text from an sp. i had already been trying for a while, but i had discovered the law of attraction first and wasted a lot of time on that. when i discovered the law of assumption, i was growing impatient and wanted to manifest a text instantly. i had already been waiting for so long. i would check my phone constantly and see i didn’t have a text from my sp and get so upset. id re-affirm the fact that he still hadn't texted me. i started setting deadlines. i decided i’d manifest a text from him overnight, then by the end of the week, then by summer, then by my birthday. my deadlines would come and go and i would “fail” .... but i still wanted to talk to my sp. i still wanted him. so i’d keep going, now with the belief that manifesting a text from him was fucking impossible and that i’d never get what i wanted. it wasn't until months of this cycle passed that i finally put my foot down and said you know that? fuck time. i don't give a fuck how long it takes, i am going to give this my all until it manifests. i don't care if it takes months, i will not waver. i will not throw a fit because it's been x amount of days and it still hasn't manifested. i know that no matter how much time goes by i will still want my sp. so i won't stop until i get him. i think it took me about three weeks of keeping my mental diet in check and not reacting to my 3D, but i got my manifestation. and those three weeks were worth it.
you have two options: 1) stop giving a fuck about time, how long you've been persisting and how much longer you may have to go, and just give it your all and get what you want, or 2) complain every day about how long it's taking because you are hellbent on manifesting instantly and hate your current circumstances, and have to stay exactly where you are with no progress because you won't just put in the work.
which choice are you going to make?

01 Relaxation
The studio is on the Huangpu River in Shanghai. Xiao Zhan was wrapped in a black down jacket, took off his shoes, and sat cross-legged on the corner of the sofa, looking very relaxed. 02 Becoming an actor

Cyno is not known for his capacity for joy. Whether cracking jokes or saving lives, Cyno never displays even an ounce of emotion on his face. For this, the General Mahamatra commands fear and respect across all of Sumeru. After all, it's hard not to cower away from a man whose expression lends nothing of itself to anyone.
As for Cyno himself, he is not ignorant enough not to have noticed how those around him act when he's there. He's hyper aware of the effect his entrance will inevitably have on a room, tense silence sucking the air from everyone else's lungs. Though this can be useful for a great many of Cyno's duties, he can't help but feel somewhat resentful of the reputation he has cultivated.
In spite of what the majority of people may believe, though, Cyno spends most of his free time quite content, joking around and enjoying life's leisures. Still, those who witness him outside of work from a far may assume that he's as serious as ever due to his perpetually neutral expression. It is only those who truly know Cyno that understand that the man does not lack emotions, but rather he merely displays his in an abnormal way. In fact, for the people who know Cyno, his joy especially is not only obvious, but also exceedingly common.
The only problem is when Cyno's job requires him to comfort those who don't know him. His expressionless face and toneless voice aren't the most soothing, and his blunt way of speaking certainly doesn't help the issue. Even his jokes can't save him, as most people just stare at him blankly afterwards. This is also what made it so difficult when the general rescued a young girl; he had no idea how to make her feel less scared of him.
When Cyno first brought Collei back to Sumeru, the young girl couldn't help but fear him. After all, ever since she was a young child she had been surrounded by people who wanted nothing more than to harm her. She underwent experiment after excruciating experiment day after day for the first 10 years of her life, all while battling a life-long illness and finding out her parents had died. When Cyno had found her, Collei was still adjusting to the idea of people treating her with kindness. Her past combined with Cyno's stern disposition compounded into Collei being afraid of the man who was trying to save her. She thought it was silly, looking back.
Collei first saw Cyno happy a week after she was brought to Sumeru. Cyno had come to visit her and Tighnari to see how she was settling in and Collei found herself playing card games at a too small dinner table with her newfound guardians. Cyno had been telling puns throughout the evening, a past time of the man's that Collei had yet to become accustomed to, but Tighnari's defeated expression told her it was commonplace.
In any case, one joke in particular caught Collei's attention: "I don't think we should play poker today," Cyno said. "Why not, Cyno? You usually jump at the opportunity to beat me at everything," Tighnari snarked, making Collei smile. She'd adjusted to her new master's occasional sass over the past week, meaning she'd learnt there was no malice behind his words. "Well Collei has already been through so much, I wouldn't want to hurt her more."
A beat of silence.
"Do you not understand the joke? You see, poker sounds like poke her. As in I'd be poking Collei, harming her further. But also it's the game's name," Cyno explained.
Another beat.
"Cyno," Tighnari groaned, covering his frustration with a hand over his face. "I thought it was funny," Cyno said, stoney tone and twin expression both very much still intact. "It was insensitive to Collei," Tighnari argued, "you can't just say things like that."
"But why not? All three of us know that she's had to endure a lot of pain in the past. It's not a secret," Cyno argued back.
And as their bickering continued, Collei found herself smiling. She was fond of them, she realised, fond of the men who had rescued her and fond of their playful arguing. Her smile grew until a small laugh escaped her mouth, more and more following until she was giggling. She couldn't remember the last time she laughed.
Cyno and Tighnari immediately shut up, snapping round to look at Collei in shock. She'd barely spoken since she arrived at Tighnari's hut, and now she was giggling. "Told you it was funny," Cyno gloated and Collei couldn't help it. She was full on laughing now, arms wrapped around her torso as her cheeks ached with joy.
Tighnari started to chuckle a bit then, so endeared by Collei's antics. Cyno just watched the two. From afar, anyone would've thought it cold but typical of the general mahamatra. He did not smile nor did he laugh. In fact, he was so expressionless that he seemed almost detached. But Tighnari knew better, and Collei was starting to as well.
Cyno's shoulders had relaxed, Collei noted, not realising they were ever tense until they weren't anymore. As her laughter died down, she also noticed how Cyno's eyebrows were less bunched up now, highlighting the newfound pink of his cheeks and red of his ears.
"Proud of yourself?" Tighnari teased the man, but there was no bite to his words. It was clear Tighnari had noticed Cyno's sudden change in demeanor, attempting to prolong Cyno's (and Collei's) joy for as long as possible by jabbing further. The softness of Cyno's movements as his hand found its place upon Tighnari's put Collei at ease. Perhaps she could find a home here with these two afterall. After all, this was the safest she'd felt in years.

Day 10: Killing in Self Defence

Yue Qingyuan had thought that it would be fine. It had been years since he had entered the Ling Xi caves, not since the time he’d been trapped inside them… but as Sect Leader he was expected to keep his cultivation up, and the caves were really the best place to do it.
It was only after Shen Qingqiu had requested seclusion in the caves for some time to improve his own cultivation, that Yue Qingyuan had finally decided to face his fear. Shen Qingqiu had an unstable foundation, and was prone to qi deviations — Yue Qingyuan had come across him recovering from them a number of times himself. If it happened while he was cultivating within the caves, with no one around to notice and call for help… would his cold body just lie there until someone wandering through the chambers happened upon his bones?
No, Yue Qingyuan would follow him in, would be there to save him if he could, no matter how much Xiao Jiu would yell at him and accuse Yue Qingyuan of thinking him weak.
Yue Qingyuan was wrong. He was very, very wrong. The first few days, he managed to meditate, but the memories slowly crept up on him, his anxiety increasing bit by bit, until he felt his qi go wild, as he was plunged into a violent qi deviation. His memories began to merge with the present as he ran through the passages of the caves, looking for the exit. It was like he was a disciple again, trapped behind the stone, unable to save Xiao Jiu.
Then he heard a shout from behind that grabbed his attention — a cultivator in fine robes with an elaborate hair crown and a spiritual sword at his waist. A Peak Lord, he concluded in his muddled state — Qing Jing perhaps, from the green? None of that mattered though, all that was on his mind was escape. The Peak Lord before him must be there to stop him from escaping, to lock him back up again until his punishment was finally over.
He attacked swiftly, surprised at the strength his blows held, without even drawing his sword. The Peak Lord fought back, first with a fan, only drawing his sword once it was left broken on the ground. Yue Qingyuan found his mouth moving without his awareness, mumbling ‘Xiao Jiu’ under his breath as he fought. He would escape, he would go back, he would save Xiao Jiu from that awful place!
The Peak Lord fighting him hesitated for a second, and that was all the time Yue Qingyuan needed to send him flying into the sharp and jagged stone of the cavern walls. He stepped closer, his rage clouding his mind as he went to finish off his enemy— only to let out a gasp as the blade of the Peak Lord’s sword cut right through his chest. As the taste of blood filled his mouth, his mind began to clear, and he looked down in horror at the Peak Lord he had just been trying to kill — Shen Qingqiu.
Shen Qingqiu’s eyes were filled with tears, in a way he hadn’t seen since they were young — not the fake bawling he’d do when they needed money, but those silent tears of fury that he’d try to hold back and hide. Xiao Jiu must hate him, was his only thought — but instead he reached out with the hand that wasn’t holding the sword currently impaling him, and held it against his cheek, which he slowly realised was damp with his own tears.
“Oh Qi-ge, you’re such an idiot,” Xiao Jiu told him quietly. “I never hated you, not really — I just thought you’d chosen to abandon me. But this — you were stuck somewhere awful as well, weren’t you?”
“I —“ Yue Qingyuan paused. He was dying, he could acknowledge that much. His qi deviation had wreaked havoc on his cultivation, and his qi was still too unstable for any of the techniques he knew that could keep him alive long enough to get to Qian Cao. If he died here, if the other Peak Lords saw — they would accuse Shen Qingqiu of murdering him in cold blood, he was sure of that. If he was going to die, he wasn’t going to bring Xiao Jiu down with him.
He leaned forward, pushing Xiu Ya further into his body in the process. Before Xiao Jiu could protest, he reached out with his hand, one dirtied with his own blood from his reckless actions earlier into the deviation, and began to write the character for ‘qing’, the same one that represented their generation of Peak Lords, onto Xiao Jiu’s cheek. It was an old ritual, one his master had only told him how to perform just before his ascension — a way for the Sect Leader to hand over their authority to anyone else. It could not be coerced, it could not be denied — the wards of the sect would answer the new sect leader, even over him.
As he finished writing it, he felt himself beginning to loose consciousness. As he finished the ritual, Shen Qingqiu let out a gasp of pain as the character embedded itself into the flesh of his cheek. Yue Qingyuan looked up at him one more time as he desperately tried to drag him out of the cave, and said what he believed would be his final words.
“I’m sorry.”

Miguel
In June 2023, Ishida posted a short story about Miguel from the Jack Jeanne winter play for Fumi's birthday. The original post includes a drawing and a music link to listen to as you read. I'm still just an amateur, but I did my best to translate it to English. I also tried to maintain the poetic Twitter short story structure as much as possible. (Note that this has both plot and character spoilers about the winter play)

Miguel, as a child on the prosperous Neshiromi Farm, Lived happily outside of Havenna.
Sowing seeds in hot summers and passing time through cold winters, Bore plentiful good fruit.
2. Neshiromi fruit, with its long-protected cultivation traditions, Boasted a mellow fragrance and refreshing sweetness. When trading with merchants from the northern cities, it would sell out in less than a few days.
3. Miguel loved his work. In the village, life was too busy to even notice boredom But, in this quiet life, nothing felt missing.
One day he would inherit the family business, And be joined in marriage to the house of a daughter of a respectable family friend. It would then be his turn to pass the ancestors' traditions on to his descendants.
There was no conceivable path other than this.
4. The battle in the north continued into its 47th winter. Shadows of the flames of war extended towards Miguel's village.
Soldiers armed with bayonets arrived. The crop fields were devastated to shreds. His father, mother, and even his grandmother with a long-time leg injury, were all killed. The house was set aflame.
In the village, the ones being utterly crushed underfoot in the inferno and the screaming, Miguel turned his back on them, and fled alone.
5. He was headed for Havenna.
In that city whose name he once heard, The pleasure and the numbness, was said to make one forget everything. For Miguel, this was necessary.
He could only keep walking.
There was absolutely nothing but ruined land and yet, Like a fool, he continued
6. Upon reaching Havenna, Miguel started work in a room of the night.
As he had nothing, his only option was to sell himself.
Every night, he filled the loneliness of random strangers. As the days added up, he sensed a growing thirst inside.
In the overwhelm of his own misery, whenever he was alone, He remembered life in his hometown and cried often.
7. He wanted support from someone but, Fleeing the village alone made him ashamed of himself. Even to close friends, he was unable to open his heart.
By going to these lengths simply to gather money, He felt as if he was becoming defiled.
Gradually, this grew into a sense of punishment for his sins. He thought instead that he deserved to become defiled.
8. At this same time, a woman in a similar line of work Became friends with him. She was a liar. It was carefree and easy.
When they had free time, they would purchase it from each other. It supported him living in Havenna, however; He thought they would never be truly close.
He liked her, but all possible paths seemed to lead to ruin, So he was afraid.
9. At one point, he fell in love with his friend's friend. Despite being in Havenna, she was inexperienced and pretty.
10. Rukiora. "Farewell to the night" He thought the name quite strange, but it seemed to be her real name.
His heart was stolen by her clear singing voice. He could never say it, but he wanted her all to himself he tho-….
11. Rukiora always dreamt of a future outside of Havenna.
Outside of Havenna was beautiful, it was fun. Everything would happily exist out there for certain.
He wanted to tell her for her sake. Someday she would know the truth and he wanted to keep her from being hurt.
12. "You're wrong, Rukiora. The outside is wasteland as far as the eye can see. The rice paddies, the fields, they aren't there. I know this. It's where I came from."
13. (Neji's note/ Miguel leaves Havenna. On his departure, he tells Rukiora one final lie. He returns to his homeland and begins sowing seeds.)

Lan Wangji is not jealous. He's not, really. He knows Wei Ying is in the Cloud Recesses with business. He's here as sect leader, brother's asked for his help dealing with some unusual spiritual activity in the area that's beyond the scope of the Lan.
This is necessary. Wei Ying is busy trying to uncover the mystery with Zewu-Jun, that's all. They're working.
In the hanshi. Alone. For the past 10 hours.
Lan Wangji is jealous.
Of course, he knows neither Lan Xichen, nor Wei Ying would break his trust like that. There's nothing going on in the hanshi besides cultivation work. Lan Wangji has no reason to suspect anything.

All Lan Wangji has managed to get from Wei Ying so far is a very brief kiss. And he's grateful, don't get him wrong! He loves feeling Wei Ying's lips against his own, warm, soft and inviting... But Wei Ying's been in the Cloud Recesses for four days now, and all that time's been spent working. Shouldn't he be taking a break by now?
Lan Wangji is trying not to be antsy about this. He really is, he even let the kids leave class early so he won't be unnecessarily harsh on them. But he wants Wei Ying so much he feels like he's going to die. Whatever can be so difficult that he can't figure it out? Maybe he just needs some time away from his work, a distraction even. And Lan Wangji is so good at taking his mind off things-
He sees Wei Ying and Lan Xichen stroll leisurely across the Cloud Recesses, deep in their conversation, and decides he's just going to drown in vinegar at this point. Wei Ying looks so good, in his red and black robes, expensive fabric shining in the sunlight and his hair unbound, a keen expression on his beautiful features...
He should have been sect leader instead. How bad could it be. Brother deserves a vacation, let Lan Wangji deal with Wei Ying and the other sect stuff, just...
Wei Ying notices him. Their eyes lock and the world seems to slow down for a moment - just long enough for Wei Ying to wink at him and add just a bit of a swing to his hips as he walks away.
It takes all Lan Wangji has not to run after them.

"Lan Zhan, how am I going to go back home now?" Wei Ying whines, laying down on Lan Zhan's chest after a long due session of lovemaking.
"I could carry you."

How was he being a distraction, you ask?
Well, [Y/N] would be happy to rant tell you. Firstly, whenever there was a commotion outside, [Y/N] would instantly get distracted and just have to check whether or not it was Jaha creating trouble again, which was a far cry from before, back when they just went about their days not caring about a thing in the world.
And another thing: the colour red was associated with Jaha far too much. A flash of red could appear in the corner of [Y/N]'s eyes, and they just couldn't help but glance at it to see if it was the man, and ignore the sag of their shoulders when they confirmed it wasn't. It wasn't fair, really. Jaha shouldn't be going around spilling blood everywhere. His violent tendencies didn't do good things for [Y/N]'s heart.

[Y/N] lied. Jaha shouldn't stop. Jaha's fighting abilities were too attractive.
And there exactly lies the problem. Jaha's sword skills were beautiful, Jaha himself was beautiful, and [Y/N] had no choice but to confront a problem they weren't ready for; to answer a question that they had absolutely none of the answers to. 
[Y/N] blinked, going through their train of thought once more before they pursed their lips, feeling a sort of second-hand offence for what they had just thought. Jaha wasn't just beautiful. Honestly, [Y/N] could look through a thesaurus and they still wouldn't be able to find a word good enough to describe Jaha and how perfect he was. 
[Y/N] sat in his chambers and stared blankly.
Before they knew it, they held a thesaurus in their hands. 
Then they slammed the book against their head without hesitation.
Oh my god, they were so screwed.
After a few moments of [Y/N] laying flat on the floor with the book over their face, the doors to their chambers burst open, and in comes Hongshin with her signature smile. "Dinner's rea— what are you doing?" She stared blankly at [Y/N].
"I might just challenge Jaha to a death match."
Hongshin sighed. This wasn't the first time she stumbled upon [Y/N] dramatizing the hell out of their feelings for Jaha. "Absolutely do not do that, you idiot." She moved to grab her friend by the arm and drag them across the floor to the dining area. Along the way, they kept talking about how being killed by Jaha Lee would be a "thank you" worthy act. Hongshin, of course, decided to tune it out.
Once there, [Y/N] stood up with a deep exhale and sat down. They looked around, noticing that their Master was nowhere to be seen. "Where's Jaha?"
Seongtae chimed in. "Said he wanted to eat his dinner outside or something."
And just like that, [Y/N] was back on their feet, setting off to look for Jaha. The first place they thought to look at was the roof—you could always find Jaha cultivating there, and it was a nice and chilly place during the evening. Once they did not find him, they thought of the plum blossom tree residing near the training grounds. Jaha frequented it a lot, so surely he would be there.
And he was; looking far more beautiful than he should have... given his messy hair and bad posture. He was sitting under the tree, with a bowl of rice in hand, eating away with a nonchalant look on his face. The chilly evening wind gave him an almost enchanting appearance as it tousled the man's hair. The pale stars were sliding into their places. The whispering of the plum blossoms was almost hushed. All about them it was still and shadowy and sweet. It was at times like this that [Y/N] felt their difficulties about having feelings for Jaha melting away and getting weaker to the warmth that they brought. To be able to look at someone, and see them as one's own world was a pleasant feeling. It made one forget about the real world for a brief second.
"You're staring."
"You mind?" [Y/N] asked as they went to sit next to Jaha, legs crisscrossed.
With a mouth full of rice, Jaha mumbled. "No. You look cute."
"What?"
Swallowing his food, he turned to look at [Y/N]. "I said you look like a sack of shit when you do. So yes, I do mind."
There was silence.
"I should start spitting in your food, great brother. More cholesterol would do you good." [Y/N] scoffed, eyebrows furrowing as they looked away from Jaha, focusing their gaze forward.
Jaha's hand, which was moving the chopsticks to his mouth, stopped for a moment. He pursed his lips. That was not what he meant to say. He did not mean it at all. It simply came out on instinct. The moment he heard [Y/N]'s words of confusion, it was as if his mind registered it as disgust and acted out in self-defence. And now there was an awkward silence between them.
He glanced at [Y/N], observing their sullen expression. Why on earth was this bothering him so much? When did he start caring about little things like this? These questions irked the crap out of him, but maybe that's just what happens when you live long enough. Everything's so damned irksome, and irrational.
Finally, he brought the chopsticks to his mouth. "Do that and I'll kill you." His eyes furrowed as he chewed, realizing what he just said. Why on God's green earth was he threatening them now? Did he have any control over his mouth? He felt like screaming.
Quickly, trying to regain control of his words, he blurted out. "And besides, aren't you way too close to me?"
"That's because I'm this close to shoving my fist down your throat." [Y/N] muttered, glaring at Jaha, their appearance resembling that of an angry cat. Now this was strange as well. Jaha didn't feel disrespected, not in the slightest. Rather, he felt amused, thrilled even to have [Y/N] talk to him like this.
Nobody could tell whether they were flirting or fighting right now.
"Oh, I'd love to see you try." Jaha urged them on, leaning in closer as he smirked, his bowl of rice now seated beside him. [Y/N] observed him momentarily, before a smirk graced their features. With swift motions they placed their hands behind them on the concrete, and moved their upper body slightly up, their leg going for Jaha's throat. Their movements were quick and precise, and only because Jaha was Jaha did he evade them, leaning back just enough to let [Y/N]'s leg miss him entirely. Pressing their body weight on their hands seated behind them on the concrete, they did a backflip, now standing up before Jaha with a wide smile.
"Dodging? That's all?"
Jaha smiled slightly, and in an instant he found himself behind [Y/N], reaching out his hand towards them, but to his surprise, they ducked before leaping further away from Jaha.
"Now look who's dodging."
"It's more shameful for you since you're supposed to be the leader of this sect, great brother." [Y/N] held their hands behind their back, snickering at the sight of the slight contortion of Jaha's eyebrows. "But regardless... aren't you missing something?" They moved one hand from behind their back, revealing Jaha's red hair tie draped over their fingers. Jaha's eyes widened slightly, his hand instinctively moving behind his head to touch his hair, only to realize that his hair was swaying freely behind him. He focused his gaze back on [Y/N], who was standing before him with a triumphant smile.
His heart skipped a beat.
"How did you..."
[Y/N] chuckled. "It'd take hours to explain."
Jaha would listen to them for hours.
He quickly moved his feet, reaching for the hair tie in [Y/N]'s hands, only to see their hand move away from his reach, and their entire body along with it. Their robes being rocked by the subtle waft made each of their moves seem elegant, which spurred Jaha even more. This wasn't a serious battle. It was not a showcase of strength; it was more of a dance being guided by the swaying winds. Each of their movements through the roofs of the place, the branches, and the bases guided their bodies closer to each other in a chase of longing. This was never about the ribbon, but combat was the language they spoke the best, so how else would they ever showcase their desire for one another?
Their gazes locked as they moved with precision. Jaha always wondered what crossed their mind whenever they looked at him in such a candid way.
"Great brother, is the food you ate slowing you down?"
A flicker of amusement danced in Jaha's eyes. "I'm merely humouring your fickle attempts at evading me." His body was close to theirs as they moved on top of a roof, his chest meeting [Y/N]'s as Jaha moved his feet quicker, purposely placing a foot behind theirs so they'd fall over on their back, but Jaha was quick to catch them, his hand placed intimately over their back as he gazed into their eyes.
It was the beating of their hearts that made it seem as though time stopped. Jaha's free hand rested on theirs, sliding the ribbon past their fingers. "Caught you."
A single question ran through Jaha's mind. Why them? Why after all these years, after two lifetimes, after hundreds of people met, did he fall for them? Why not for all the others? What made them so different from everyone else before them?
But it was simple.
Why would he choose anyone else when [Y/N] exists?
Seeing the slight shift in [Y/N]'s gaze, he wasn't certain whether it was disdain or reciprocation of his unspoken feelings, so he decided to pull away, steadying them back on their feet as he shifted his gaze to the side.
"Good effor—"
Before he could finish speaking, [Y/N]'s hands were cupping his face, and his gaze was turned back on theirs.
"What a coward." They said through flushed cheeks and slightly furrowed brows. Their lips met his in a tender kiss. Without much thought Jaha's hands found themselves behind [Y/N]'s back, pulling them closer. He touched them, and it felt as if the stars were dancing upon their skin. It was a collision of desire, a meeting of souls, as their mouths moved in a synchronized rhythm. Their kiss was both tender and fervent, a passionate dance of exploration. They lost themselves in the intoxicating taste and texture of each other as if discovering a long-lost treasure.
Their bodies pressed closer, their hearts pounding in sync with the fervour of their embrace. [Y/N]'s fingers entwined in his hair, pulling him closer, deepening the kiss with a hunger that burned through their veins. Jaha let out a low groan at the tug of his hair. He pulled away slightly, breaking the string of saliva which connected their lips for a mere moment. He smiled.
"You're eager."
"And you're without your ribbon once again." With a playful grin, they moved away from Jaha, showcasing his ribbon tangled between their fingers once more. "Catch me again and I may consider rewarding you again."
Jaha wasted no time in going after them once more, his soft laughter filling the moonlit sky. He didn't mind catching them again, and again, for as many times as he had to, if it meant that they'd stay in his arms for just a moment longer.

brief context -
-The bond that Meena and John cultivated throughout the past year created a cozy and affectionate lifestyle. Frequently, Meena would linger at his place, spending evenings together after delightful dinners or indulging in weekend sleepovers that added a touch of warmth to their connection.
It being the cold winter John invited you to spend the week with him during the holidays. He still had to work on most days though, which led her to being at home with "dog/mochi"! -
6:31 am
The sun was glimmering through the floor to ceiling windows you notice John start to shuffle in the sheets and wake up. As usual he performed with his normal routine of making coffee for himself and watching the morning news. After 10-15 minutes he went to shower later then going to work.
Meena hated the "old fashioned" morning routine John had. She wished she could just stay in bed for a couple more hours with him just to relax and be close to each other. After John left she slept for a couple more hours, I mean she's just a girl right?
Around 9:45 Meena awakened
(second pov)
Hearing the quiet yet noticeable pitter-patter of John's beloved dog walking into the bedroom was a sign that he needed some "outside time". John's dog you nicknamed "Mochi" really loved you and enjoyed attention from you.
In her adorable pajamas walking over towards the large shared bathroom she and John shared. Glancing at the counter and seeing the small area of her own personal items like skin care and makeup took over made you smile. Meena made her way to the glass doored shower to clean herself up for the day.
Time passed and Meena spent most of her time just hanging out with the dog, online shopping and baking cookies. She later fell asleep on the sofa watching YouTube. Until the sound of the garage woke her up she realized John was home.
Meena greeted her love with a warm smile and sprinted over to him with a hug. He loved your soft cuddles but this specific evening he seemed a bit more firm than usual. He have you a couple kisses then he released you from his arms and went to his office.
With such discomfort and tensity plastered on his face you worried if something bad happened? with work or maybe you annoyed him? maybe it was road rage from driving through the busy new york city streets?
Meena let John have maybe 12 to 15 minutes of quiet time to himself but she couldn't worry alone much longer. She left her comfy chair near the island counter she was in to work on the idea she planned. A small ice cream session with John!!
Preparing the adorable comfort snack with sprinkles and caramel syrup in small bowls, she placed both bowls on the table then quickly skipping to Johns office.
John noticed the sound of her foot steps immediately and stood up as soon as the door was opened. He greeted her saying "Hi Bunny". That was one of the nicknames he gave you. You looked at John with nothing but pure intention and grabbed his hand to lead him to the dining area where the ice cream was.
He stared in shock of the small gesture Meena made for him. He didn't have much growing up and was rarely given anything nice, so this was a big deal for him. The two love birds sat and conversed whilst having their delicious treat.
John finished eating and then placed his hand on top of her with his fingers moving slowly and taking in her beauty as the night went on. The two didn't want the night to go to waste but noticed the night was passing.
He then made then asked the small yet intense question saying "Would you like to visit me in the bathroom in five minutes?" a sparkle lit in her eyes and she nodded her head softly whilst blushing.
Quickly Meena raced to wash the dishes whilst John walked over to their beloved shower...
Meena looked at herself in front of the mirror making sure she looks good, checking if her eyebrows were in place or if she had any crumbs on her face. Then practically sprinting over to the bathroom and knocking on the door.
*knock knock* Meena ask gently "Can I come in?" hoping this situation is more than him just giving her a back massage and bath something more intimate.
John quickly opens the door to see Meena in her cute sweat pants and delicate top but for Meena all she is seeing is a very bare version of John. Her heart began to race with arousal. He pulled her hand into the bathroom and led her to the shower. He slowly undressed her let her check if the water was at a good temperature for her.
The two of them slowly started to bathe themselves but they both knew they wanted to do more than that. Meena's soft tanned hand made its way to Johns chest feeling the warmth of his body. John looked at her with water droplets dripping from his hair he used his own hand to move hers guiding it lower to his wait and made a small smirk...
Meena lowered herself on to her knees trying not to break eye contact with him. She grabbed his "shaft" and looked down then right back at him. He looked at her with so much love and put his hands on the side of her cheeks then saying "Please continue".
She took his length slowly but steadily hoping it was enough for him, he began to massage her neck and shoulders to ease any tensity she may have. His soft grunts made her so weak.
He tapped her on the shoulder and memoed her to stop. He wanted her to feel good too. John lifted her by the waist and had her back towards the wall, He glanced at her once she made the small "oh my god remark" smiling at how courageous he can be at time. He looked back at her to make sure he had her consent and she nodded heavily wanting him to continue.
John inserted himself into her and instantly felt a form relaxation. Luckily shes on birth control so there's no need to worry for any issues. John paced himself to make sure he didn't hurt or make any tears or marks on her skin. He left small kisses all across her waist and face. His small "I love yous" left her feeling like a princess...
The night ended with the two cuddle buddies snug in bed with facial moisturizer on and vanilla-scented lotion. Their pure bliss was so strong it radiated through their entire home.

Less dialogue than I expected! Usually when I do this one, I have a bunch of: "Opening words," they say, as the Situation comes to a head, "and then the second, longer half of that sentence."

A-Qing is scared.
Everyone around her is dead.
Everyone except Xiao Xingchen and Chengmei.
She doesn't know what to do. Xiao Xingchen remarks at how strange and reclusive everyone in this town is and she nods and complains, saying she wants to go someplace a little more lively, but Chengmei insists he likes it here.
Xiao Xingchen is blind and can't tell that everyone around them is dead and A-Qing can't tell him because she's supposed to be blind too, because if she tries then Chengmei will discover the truth about her and she'll become just one more dead girl who can't do anything to help anyone.
There has to be something happening here, some spell or trick. Xiao Xingchen had smelled blood on the road but he doesn't seem to notice the air of decay or the way no one around them is breathing. Chengmei has done something to dull Xiao Xingchen's senses or addle his mind, has done something to him that he hasn't done to her.
It's important to her that people underestimate her. She's worked hard to be underestimated. But she's almost regretting it now - maybe it would be better to be walking around in ignorance, rather than having to smile and laugh and pretend that the walking corpses around them don't frighten her halfway into being a corpse herself.
She could leave. Chengmei doesn't care enough about her to stop her, she doesn't think, and maybe she could get some help. But what will happen to Xiao Xingchen while she's gone? What if Chengmei does something terrible to him? What if he takes Xiao Xingchen and leaves and by the time she comes back they're gone forever?
The thought is ever worse than her current situation, so she stays, and hopes one day she'll find an opening to get them to safety.
She's by the river, because the corpses seem to avoid running water, when she sees a woman she's never seen before walking through the mist. A-Qing squints, trying to make sense of what she's seeing as the woman heads in her direction. It makes her nervous, but the corpses have never hurt her before.
She's wearing pale blue robes and she's tall, for a woman, and almost too skinny. Her dark hair falls freely down her back but she has a strange ribbon wrapped around her forehead. A-Qing is trying to figure out what killed her, considering she lacks the puffy face of strangulation or and her robes are free from blood, when she notices a sword at the strange woman's side.
Terror shoots through her. A-Qing yanks her robes to her knees, getting ready to run, when the woman waves at her and shouts, "You there! You're alive, aren't you? Have you seen anyone else alive around here? He'd be this tall, in all white, very pretty?"
A-Qing freezes, mouth dropping open. The woman still has her tongue. Her eyes sting and she desperately tries to blink her tears away, worried if she loses sight of the woman in front her that she'll disappear completely.
This woman is alive. She's got a sword and she's smiling and she's asking for Xiao Xingchen, which means maybe she's a cultivator too, maybe she can save them from Chengmei's horrible games.
A-Qing throws herself at the woman, who in spite of her small stature doesn't so much as sway with the impact, and instead lays a warm hand against her back. "What's all this, then? What are you doing here with all this going on, anyway?" She rubs soothing circles into her back. "Hey, hey, don't cry! It's going to be okay. I may not look like much, but I'm pretty good with stuff like this."
She's warm. She's warm and alive and she's a cultivator and she's going to help.
A-Qing keeps her forehead pressed against the woman's chest and starts talking.

Sadism is a character trait that is often written as a fetish. It's not used as the main character trait for a love interest very often. I'm not even sure if the sadistic love interest will be the endgame villain or not. Our former lady turned servant heroine has two men to choose from, and the sadistic one is the obvious looking loser. That makes me suspicious. It's a little too obvious.
This is Julia. She pretty clearly used to be a noble woman, but now she has nothing. Her childhood friend is currently "protecting" her. Without his favor she wouldn't have a job or a roof over her head.

Julia is super traumatized by some kind of mysterious incident. Camille is the only person left in the world who actually knows her, and treats her like a person. She also doesn't have a voice by the way, unless she's speaking to him. Camille has blessed magic that temporarily relieves curses.(He's probably using magic to take away her voice so she can't make friends) So, Julia is disabled and she's a low ranking maid. She can only speak to her only friend, who just so happens to be the second son of the man who owns her.

Jealousy.
Jealousy fucking everywhere. All of Camille's servants, including Julia, adore him. He's generous and his magic is gentle. He is their pride, and everyone prefers him over the actual heir. Camille's affection for Julia makes her a target.

This ugly guy is the actual heir. He beats up Julia almost every day. He's pissed off all the time because he knows his younger brother has more power than he does. He hates Julia. She's not actually that great at servant work, but he can't fire her. Nobody can because Camille pities the useless, disabled Julia.

Camille pays attention to Julia. She cries and vents with him. She only speaks to him. Most of the servants believe she's pretending to be mute to get his attention. Jealousy makes people strange. The servants think Julia is the villain, who is taking advantage of their angelic master. They also think she's whore who is trying to seduce their beloved master.

Camille really, really likes it when Julia relies on him. It turns him on. Yuck. It makes him a rather unique sadistic yandere. Obviously, he will never let her die. However, he's more than willing to starve her and let his brother beat her. He's also ok with the other servants constant abuse. I think he's the sort of yandere that sees the object of their affection as a pet. Not in the fetish way. In the literal way.

Julia grew up beautiful because of course she did. That makes the envy even worse. Camille adds fuel to the fire. He invites Julia to lunch. He tells the cooks to feed her pastries. This is a very strict society. The cooks are not allowed to eat the fancy ingredients they prepare. When Camille tries to make them give Julia things he's kind of spitting on them. He's blatantly saying that Julia is more important than them. Naturally, they blame Julia because Camille isn't suspicious. Even Julia doesn't suspect him.

She gets locked in a shed. She almost gets raped. Camille is watching the whole time. Possibly with magic. Julia often goes to bed hungry. She cries herself to sleep alot. She is trying by the way. She's not lazy. Whenever she finishes her work the maids in charge literally dump garbage around her. Just because they cannot stand her. She can't be a competent maid. She has to be a villainess. That's the only way they can justify their own behavior.

Julia adores Camille absolutely. I cannot wait for her to notice his string of betrayals. The second love interest hadn't even appeared yet, but I like this one. The psychological warfare is nice. Camille is an unpredictable yandere, and the servants are to be feared. I truly believe that Julia could be murdered soon. The jealousy Camille cultivated is seriously that bad.

Top 10 Dream & Love/Reader Moments

1. Part ii - Dream and Love’s First Meeting.
This is definitely a Top 10 moment. I remember being so excited to write Dream for the first time and to describe him through Love/Reader’s eyes. Establishing their relationship (especially Love’s habit of challenging Dream), writing their first little bit of “tension,” and then adding the abrupt end was so much fun for me.
2. Part iii - A Day in the Life of Love
This was another favorite early on. This chapter was entirely dedicated to establishing Dream/Love’s dynamic and revealing the inner workings of Love’s world, and I adored every second of it. Writing Dream’s obvious surprise at Love’s passion for simple pleasures (coffee and earl grey, anyone?) and his (thinly veiled) interest in her function were opportunities to show off Dream’s curious nature. I also loved writing the opening scene of him showing up in her room unannounced, reading a novel, with no regard for her personal space. To me, this emphasized just how otherworldly Dream is, particularly in comparison to how strongly Love clings to her past as a mortal.
3. Part viii - Dream Gives Love the Pouch of Sand
This gift from the Dream Lord was something I was really looking forward to. It definitely signals a turning point and a big step for our Dream Lord. Dream’s downplaying of how thoughtful it was for him to introduce Love to Hob is 100% thick-headed, pulled-the-wool-over-his-own-eyes Dream material. Also, this scene gives us the first time that Love refers to the Dream Lord as “Dream.” Up until this point, it had been Dream Lord, Lord Morpheus, Morpheus - another subtle but significant development!
4. Part ix - The Whole Dang Chapter
This is one of my all-time favorites of this series. I was so excited to finally put together all the pieces and reveal Love’s complete past to the reader. I was even more excited to write Love journeying to the Dreaming for comfort and finding solace in our Dream Lord. This chapter has our first truly voluntary touch by both parties (When you slip your fingers into the palm of his waiting hand, you’re surprised at the smoothness you find there. Soft as silk.) I was also dying to finally write from Dream’s perspective in this chapter. His evident desperation to gain answers about Love’s past without really knowing (or at least being able to admit to himself) WHY he wanted to know – so fun. Plus, their attachments start forming! So much going on in this chapter.
5. Part x - Love’s Grapples with the Fall
On a deep note, I adored exploring Love’s difficulty grappling with her feelings for Dream in this chapter. Getting to see how her past impacts her current decisions and how it cultivated this strong sense of hesitancy to fall in love out of self-preservation… this was a blast. On a more light-hearted note, writing the scenes where Love begins to notice little things about Dream that she didn’t before, her nervousness in his presence, all her little “simping” moments were SO MUCH FUN, AH.
6. Part xii - Love Submits to the Truth
Writing the scene where Love visits Dream unseen in his throne room was one I was looking forward to for a long time. There was a sweet surrender to this scene – the simple pleasure of being able to really look at him, unabashed and unashamed; admitting his beauty to herself; submitting to the truth of her feelings. That moment where you see someone you care about in a different light for the very first time, where you realize that what you’ve been feeling is actually love… This experience is one I’ve actually lived out in my own life, so writing this scene was very special to me.
7. Part xiii - Protective Dream + “I Remember You”
I mean, need I say more? Getting to finally write Protective Dream was SUCH a huge payoff. I’ve always subscribed to the concept that Dream is not unfeeling; rather, he almost feels too much, and must contain it for the sake of his function. Getting to open the floodgates a bit in this chapter was a thrill. Also, the realization that a part of Dream remembered Love, had always remembered Love, had been aware of her removal from the Dreaming on the night of her murder, and Love’s “Please don’t tell me that, Dream” that followed after his confession – *screams internally*
8. Part xiv - THE Dream and The Break-Up
The “dream” scene where Love and Dream finally give in to their feelings was actually the first scene I ever wrote for this story. Needless to say, the buildup was LONG. Finally getting to write these two lovebirds having a happy moment and opening up to one another gave me all the feels. The exchange of vows!! And then, of course, we had the whiplash of Love declaring her need to stay away from Dream later in the chapter. One love interest lying about their feelings to protect the other love interest is a hill I WILL die on.
9. Part xvi - The Sacrifice
Because I’m a sucker for some good old heart-stopping, gut-wrenching, knock-the-wind-out-of-you angst. This part had it all - Love missing Dream while in the Garden of Forking Ways, Love finally harnessing the full potential of her function, and then the ultimate sacrifice. I remember being so nervous to write this chapter, as it felt the entire story was riding on its shoulders. Dream learning of their attachments, Love’s acceptance of her fate knowing that it was worth it to protect Dream, her admitting her feelings, Dream promising to “find her” – it all set us up for our final chapters.
10. Interlude – Dream’s Vow
Honestly, any time I got to write for Dream was a major highlight for me in this story. Definitely planning on writing a one-shot entirely from Dream’s POV after the story is over. Describing the aftermath of Love’s sacrifice from Dream’s point of view, his utter devotion, his utter destruction – oof, it was a doozy. The angst was rough, but it all set us up for that final line – “And, in that moment, Dream of the Endless knows.”
Bonus: Any dock scene/”Twenty Questions” scene. I love writing for these two dorks. Enough said.
