Page 17. We see that Donnie is just laughing at the joke now. It might be because it’s right after Leo sobbing for a while and then he just pulls that joke out of nowhere, or the fact that Donnie is exhausted. Or maybe, Donnie just really missed his stupid jokes
Tumblr media
But it relaxes Donnie out of whatever caffeine or adrenaline high he’s been in for so long, and he passes out on Leo. Literally laughs himself to sleep.
However for Leo, this was probably really worrying. Because Donnie was active and talking to him and suddenly he’s passed out. (Also is it just me or does it look like Leo’s stump is sorta holding Donnie’s head up?)
~~~~~
In Page 18, Leo gently lays Donnie down on the bed he had woken up from. Staring at Donnie the whole way through with a sort of attentiveness to any sort of discomfort/pain.
Tumblr media
He’d probably noticed the eyebags under Donnies eyes too.
In the second panel, Leo’s worry shows through again and seems to need to take a breath before checking Donnie’s pulse in panel three.
The fact that Donnie lets this happen so willingly (even when passed out. I would guess that over the years in the apocalypse, the turtles have learned a way to protect themselves even in their sleep.) shows that he is fully out and probably wont wake up for a while.
~~~~~
In page 19, notice how there wasn’t just one panel being used to show Leo focusing on Donnie’s pulse, but two. We can tell by Leo’s facial expression that he’s still having doubts of seeing Donnie alive again.
Still doubting that things are real in the third panel as he goes to check his own pulse. His own pulse being much quicker than Donnies. This could be because of the fact that Donnie’s asleep while Leo is awake. Or it could be the fact that Leo is very alert now that he’s alone.
Tumblr media
In the last panel, Leo finally lets himself say what he’s thinking at the moment “what the fuck”. I don’t think ive ever read those words with so much emotion behind them because yes. Leo is just… so confused on how he got here. He has no clue that they’re in the present timeline, where Donnie can resurrect people. He has no idea if there are other people out there other than him and Donnie. He doesn’t even know that the sky is now free of krang and is blue instead of the apocalyptic red.
The last panel also shows us that Leo is also finally starting to take note of his surroundings, past just trying to reach for Donnie.
~~~~~
Some other theories/notes; I’m guessing that Leo is going to need a lot of guidance/reassurance of the fact that things are real and that he can relax. Like Casey, he probably wont be a fan of the big crowds in NYC and would rather stay hidden.
I’m also guessing that the family will have some sort of “talk” about what has happened overall. The war, the people they’ve lost, everything. Maybe Cass wont add this in, but I think Mikey will try to have everyone at least address the fact that not only are they survivors, but they are also veterans from a long, long war.
~~~~~~~~~~
Phew… that was a lot of writing! Loved checking through all 59 panels and finding the little details/ focusing on the emotion Cass was trying to portray there.
Would like to thank @somerandomdudelmao for the comics and also @tapakah0 and @ryanthel0ser for being wonderful motivators hehe

Akane is a popular kid, arguably the most popular student outside Aoi and Teru, at least in his own class, so let's talk about it!
In his introduction, we are told the basics: how Akane is a childhood friend of Aoi, dutiful, obsessed with her, and so on. During this exposition, we get this small panel of two guys looking at him with a positive opinion of him:
Tumblr media
It's important that the stripped shirt guy is the one who says "Akane is so nice" cause it is implied he has a crush on Aoi, or at the very least, that he considers her really cute, blushing when she is just living her life.
Tumblr media
So even people who should consider him one hell of a romantic rival don't think badly of him. I would go as far as to say that they are invested in his obvious crush on Aoi because of the amount of attention he gets after being enchanted by the confession tree.
In an arc where everyone starts to get together, is hard to notice or even care about new couples.
Tumblr media
But the whole class stops when Akane and Lemon claim to be dating. They surround the boys and talk about it, openly staring at them. (shout out to @bpzau-d-r-a-w-s for pointing out this crowd)
Tumblr media
Which I would have assumed is homophobia if it wasn't for how many guys confess to Teru on the daily without being spared a single thought, or the way no one is trying to comfort Aoi.
If he was only known as 'that dude that follows Aoi' the class reaction should be "Great! Her bodyguard is not in the picture anymore! That's my chance!" but they don't spare Aoi a glance. No one cares that "our calm and composed popular queen is crying in the middle of class." right now. They are just... focused on Akane, too shocked by his change of heart to care about much else.
I know is Akane getting this attention instead of Lemon because the class reacted the same way once Akane started studying like crazy to win 'Teru's challenge' in chapter 59.
Tumblr media
People don't dismiss his behavior as "hum, weird, well whatever" like when Nene talks to 'herself '(talk to Hanako) in class, they keep crowding and talking about Akane, they are invested, aware of the context of the situation (so they asked him) and familiar enough to take a guess that his behavior is related to Aoi.
So they care about what this weirdo is doing, he is a soap opera to the class! Just look at how invested people get when he says no to Aoi, even the background crew are open-mouthed or confused.
Tumblr media
This idea Akane is a boy people pay attention to is everywhere in the manga.
Even for a class representative/council guy, it is ridiculous the number of people who want his help. He is always surrounded by people wanting his help.
Tumblr media
I personally can't see that many people approach someone just to take advantage of them, he makes others go "Oh it's Aoi! I can trust Aoi to be of help :D" but I acknowledge that can be seen as a sign of how incompetent his class is or just people wanting to take advantage of him, so I'll talk about the cases people run to him that are nonrelated to his duties, is just his vibes:
Tiara gets super attached to Akane in no time, literally clinging to him out of everyone in the room, running to his side whenever there is an opportunity for it.
Tumblr media
Hanako, who is apathetic towards most humans and supernaturals alike, loves his guts. Even if the admiration is not mutual.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teru and Aoi are prideful people who have the whole school paying attention to them. They look at Akane the most.
Tumblr media
Girls especially seem to like him.
We don't see him interact with many girls considering Aoi's jealous nature, but enough to tell the boys in his class call him 'Aoi', and the girls call him 'Akane-kun.' (shout out to @iamhereinthebg for pointing that out)
Tumblr media
I am convinced the reason he doesn't get many confessions is because he brutally shuts down anyone who tries.
He isn't like Teru and Aoi, he does not believe in "I'll let them down gently, give them a cute smile to soothe the pain of rejection" he just crushes their hopes without hesitation and makes it clear they have no chance.
The one girl we explicitly see confess to him only ever hoped Akane would accept her chocolate, having no hopes her feelings would be returned but caring enough to let him know anyway.
Tumblr media
And Akane still rejected her chocolates.
He seems to be relatively used to confessions, to the point he panicked when Nene said "I've meant to talk to you for ages" and immediately assumed she wanted to confess to him.
Tumblr media
His answer is so quick, almost scripted "My heart belongs to another. I'm sorry." it makes no sense if he isn't at least somewhat used to getting love confessions.
Considering how... Unpleasant confessing to a guy who everyone knows has been madly in love with someone else for more than a decade must be, I am not surprised almost no one is brave enough to even try to pursue him. His blunt, borderline rude, way of expressing that his suitors are not welcome probably doesn't help either.
Bonus:
He is no idol, people do not trip over themselves when they see him like with Aoi and teru, but I do think he is considered a 'pretty boy' in canon.
Maybe I am reaching cause I am biased af, but I do find it wild that he is drawn super pretty in other's people pov when he is being playful or flirty, and the person always blushes about it.

Hi it’s me again, the anon who asked about the Joker hating Dick. Back with two more things, sorry. First is Dick being the hardest bat for Cass to read, is that canon or fanon? Another is Dick, Cass, and Bruce being the only bats (heroes?) able to beat Jason in a fight, where is that from?
Sorry for the lengthy ask and I hope you’re having a wonderful day 💕
Hey again (^▽^)!! Not at all and thanks <3
Dick is just a hard person in general to read for anyone.
Tumblr media
Titans (2016) Issue #11
And this is coming from a mind reader and empath.
But in terms of Cass, I think it may be because he's the only one whom she can't tell what he's thinking without him saying something. For example with Tim,
Tumblr media
Batgirl (2000) Issue #59
Even though they're just sitting there silently, Cass can identify every emotion that Tim's emoting without him saying a word. However with Dick, she only learns about him by watching his interactions with other people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) Issue #81
She can still read his fighting movements but she doesn't have the same level of emotional understanding of him through body language that she has on everyone else. I guess it comes with him being a born performer. It's like her trying to read Alfred given that Alfred and Dick both understand and bond with each other over their acting abilities.
Another thing about Dick and Cass is that Dick is able to read Cass as easily as Cass is able to read other people.
In fighting, just like she can easily see his form
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal Issue #1
Dick can see hers too
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal Issue #1
He's able to identify her weakness and analyze her fighting technique just like she's able to do his. Although Cass wins because she's always quicker on the draw than everyone. It comes with her almost meta-like ability to identify weak points in someone's body language.
So that's canon for emotional understanding I think but unless I have the direct canon panel I can't say for sure.
Dick, Cass, and Bruce being the only ones of the bats to defeat Jason is canon.
Dick beat Jason even after being electrocuted, tranquilized, hit with fear toxin, and blown up in the Battle for the Cowl
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman: Battle for the Cowl Issue #3
Yet even after all this he still wins. He accidentally uses too much strength though and knocks Jason off the ledge
Tumblr media
Batman: Battle for the Cowl Issue #3
Dick is always controlling his power. He's careful in the way he fights and goes easy on everyone especially if they're his friends of allies (evidenced in Vigilante comic), but when he loses that carefully maintained control, he always wins. There are other instances where Dick wins too but to give one that evens the playing field (where neither holds back), Battle for the Cowl is the best example.
This idea of holding back ties into Bruce too. Bruce doesn't restrain himself nearly half as much as Dick does but he does it too. When he doesn't hold back against Jason, he wins
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman: Under the Red Hood Issue #13
Cass beats everyone, there's no question but here's the evidence anyway:
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal Issue #3
Even as he's saying this, Cass has already identified all of Jason's weak points
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal Issue #3
People sometimes use the following scene to say Jason can beat Cass but c'mon. It says right there he caught her by surprise and she wasn't seriously fighting.
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin Eternal Issue #3
But Jason can beat Tim, Duke, and Damian canonically.
Here he beats Tim when Tim decides to dress up as Batman.
Tumblr media
Batman: Battle for the Cowl Issue #2
It's kind of a one-sided fight. He also beats Tim when Tim is Robin but it's a little unfair to use that given than Jason is a trained adult and Tim is sort of just starting out. Also to be fair to Tim, Jason catches him by surprise and hiding but overall I'd say Jason still wins.
He also beats Damian in a fight rather easily
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Teen Titans (2016) Annual #1
He also beats him in Batman and Robin and in Batman (2016)
Tumblr media
Batman and Robin (2009) Issue #5
Although Damian has beaten Jason a few time in a no holds barred fight. I guess it just depends on how much they feel like fighting and who's writing. I can't tell with these two but I believe Jason would win eventually.
He can beat Duke too
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
New Talent Showcase 2017
He does it so easily.
I can't remember him fighting Stephanie so I'll leave her out. In terms of fighting ability in the batfam, I'd say Jason's solidly in the middle. Still a strong fighter though.

Cause Baby You're My Muse [Chapter 59]
Tumblr media
Genre: Romance, Idol!AU, Music, Slight angst
Pairing: Mingi x Reader (y/n)
Characters: Producer!Reader, IdolLyricist!Mingi, IdolProducer!Hongjoong, Idol!Seonghwa, Idol!Yunho, Idol!Wooyoung, Idol!San, Idol!Yeosang, Idol!Jongho, cameo(s) by other celebrities
Summary: You always preferred producing underground, having an unknown face and governed by your own rules. But when you start freelancing for idol groups, you say goodbye to your lone wolf lifestyle as you learn to work with idol producers and lyricists.
Word count: 3.2K
When Mingi snuck you in, the managers looked at you with uncertainty. You're guessing they already knew what happened, or at least, the relationship you have with Mingi. There's no other explanation to seeing you two walk in together.
"Good to see you again." They gave you brief hugs with tight smiles. You sensed the nervousness in their voices.
"Thank you. I hope you've been well." You spoke calmly, reciprocating their hugs.
"Let's go." Mingi guided you in further into the floor where all the members' rooms were. If the talk with Ateez doesn't work out, you'll take Haneul and go home. That's it.
"It'll be okay." Mingi kissed the top of your head before you knocked and entered Seonghwa's room.
"Jongho took Haneul out for brunch. We thought it was best she wasn't here while we talked." Seonghwa explained as he led you both further in.
"That's fine. Thanks." You nodded. The rest of the boys were all spaced out amongst the couch, study corner, the bed and the vanity. It felt like you were being interviewed by a panel with the way all their eyes were on you. You didn't even notice that you stopped breathing until Mingi's hand came to rest on your back.
"Breathe." He whispered the reminder, making you inhale and fill your lungs with oxygen again.
"Here." He guided you to sit on the empty space of the couch with him settling right beside you. Seonghwa handed you a bottle of water. You removed your mask and tucked it into your pocket.
"I guess before we say anything. I want to sincerely apologise to all of you. What I did is unforgiveable, the hurt I've caused everyone." You stood up and bowed deeply.
"Indigo... There's nothing to apologise for." San cleared his throat. You gave a small smile in reply.
"So, I'm not sure what Seonghwa and Jongho have told you... Why don't you guys ask me questions?" You suggested.
"Were you ever hurt by this person that threatened you?" Hongjoong asked. He had actually asked Seonghwa this before but he knew he needed to hear it from you to actually be sure.
"No. But I was followed and stalked. Haneul and you all, as well. That was my breaking point, I guess. In my new house, I was sent pictures of us and Haneul together. They used my real name too, which scared me a lot." You confessed.
"We understand. I think in your position, we would have been scared too. You did go to the police right?"
"Yes because the person vandalised my old apartment the night I moved out. My old landlord opened the case and I followed up with evidence." You explained.
"Could the police not do anything?"
"I'm sure you know about the internal investigation. It was just the wrong time to have an internal investigation since it can get out to the media and you were preparing for a comeback." You said.
"Indigo... You know you shouldn't put the comeback before your own safety." Wooyoung frowned.
"But I couldn't do that to all of you." You shook your head with a sigh. Mingi placed his hand on your thigh, squeezing it reassuringly. All the boys sent you sad, pitiful looks.
"So you're signed to Big Hit now?" Yeosang asked.
"Yes. But I want to clarify that I did not use all of you as my stepping stone. The offer from Pdogg came in after I started at KQ. Eden and CEO Kim were made aware of the offer early on, I was honest with them in my consideration of the offer." You explained.
"If the offer came in before everything happened, why didn't you tell us then?" Wooyoung followed up.
"I honestly pushed it to the back of my mind. I was going to finish the contract with KQ no matter what my decision was. It wasn't a covert secret." You replied.
"So you forgot to tell us?"
"Not that either... At that time, I saw no use in announcing it. I didn't want to promise to stay or cause a distraction with my impending departure. Really, that's the truth." You said.
"Pdogg asked me if I wanted to spend 2 years in America, working at the HYBE America office with Western producers. I said yes."
"You and Mingi presumably talked a lot last night. So what's going happen?" Hongjoong asked.
"Indigo will be here to finish the 2 year stint with Big Hit. While she remained here, I would like to propose to CEO Kim to launch the internal investigation into finding the culprit behind the threats. Knowing that they threatened our own safety too is dangerous for all of us." Mingi explained.
"Then you're coming back to Korea after the 2 years are finished?" Seonghwa clarified.
"That's the plan. But to avoid there being a future conflict of interest, we decided it was best for me to not return to KQ to work. I'll stay with Big Hit." You informed.
"You and Mingi are together again?" Yeosang raised his eyebrows. You and Mingi looked at each other before nodding.
"After everything she put you through, you forgive her just like that?" Yunho's voice was heard for the first time.
"Yun..." Mingi was shocked by his best friend's cold words. Yunho clicked his tongue and frowned in disapproval. He walked out of the room without sparing you another glance.
"I'll go talk to him." Mingi assured and walked out, chasing after the other male.
"I don't blame him... I don't deserve Mingi's forgiveness, or any of yours for what I did." You smiled bitterly.
"Indigo, that's not true. You're too hard on yourself. You went through a lot on your own. You did what you did because you thought it was the best way to keep everyone safe. Yunho is just... protective of Mingi." San said, trying to find the right words.
"Come here." Wooyoung leapt forward and hugged you tightly, nuzzling his cheek against yours. Then he tucked your head under his chin to coddle you.
"Poor Indigo... It must have been hard going through all that on your own. But you're not alone anymore." He whispered.
"I don't deserve any of you." You teared up, looking at everyone in the room as they looked back at you.
"You do. We're family and we stick together, we protect each other. Whatever it is, we go through it together." Hongjoong smiled fondly. You nodded your head.
"But that means no more hiding things for us. You hide things again, I'll smack you as punishment." Wooyoung scolded.
"I won't, I promise." You said.
"Okay, no more tears. I'm sure you and Mingi had your fair share of tears yesterday, judging by your puffy faces." Seonghwa chuckled, grabbing a tissue to gently wipe away the tears from your cheeks. You gave everyone there a hug. But you knew, you needed to make things right with Yunho.
"I'll go find them." You informed the group and walked out of the room. Just then, Mingi emerged from one of the rooms, a conflicted look on his face.
"Oh, baby." He looked up to see you.
"Is he in there? I'll talk to him." You asked, nodding over the room, which you assumed was Yunho's.
"Mhmm. But maybe it's not the best if-" He chewed on his bottom lip, rubbing the back of his neck with apprehension. You gently pulled his chin so he wouldn't gnaw on his lip.
"I'll be fine." You assured. Mingi sighed but nodded, giving you a peck on the forehead and an encouraging squeeze of your shoulder.
"Yunho? It's me. Can I come in?" You knocked on the door. There was no reply but you slowly entered.
Yunho was standing in the balcony, leaning against the banister as he looked out the city view. His back was to you but you could feel the anger radiating off it. You gulped and took a deep breath before you slowly approached him.
"If you're here to tell me you had no choice and were the victim, I know. I know that. I don't need to be convinced any further." He said, still facing away from you.
"I'm not here to convince you, Yunho. Because I understand. If I were you, I would act and feel the same way." You sighed.
"No, don't say that." Yunho turned to you. His eyes were glassy as tears spilled down his cheeks.
"You can't say that you understand because you don't. You weren't here, you... you didn't see. You didn't see what I went through." Yunho sniffled.
"I know, you went through a lot on your own. I know, it's not your fault. But I can't see him go through that again, I can't let him get hurt like that again." He shook his head.
"I'm sorry, Yunho. It must have been a lot..." You apologised, eyes casting downwards.
"He was a shell of a person. I thought I lost him for good. All the nightmares, the anxiety attacks, I was there. I was the one that saw him through that. It ripped him apart and I felt like a failure for letting him get like that. I couldn't comfort him, I didn't know how to comfort him." He choked on a sob.
"It killed me at how I couldn't protect him from you." He looked into your eyes through the tears.
You ignored the dull ache in your chest at his words. But you knew that they were nothing but the truth. You couldn't imagine what Yunho went through to support Mingi.
"He was just starting to get better. I thought we were getting somewhere, that I got him back." He cried.
"I shouldn't have come back." You whispered.
"Yeah, maybe you shouldn't have." He agreed, wrapping his arms around himself. You expected this, not everyone would have welcomed you with open arms.
"I can't let you hurt him again. I don't think I can witness him go through that all over again if you decide to leave once more. You can't just decide one day to up and leave him, and leave me to pick up his broken pieces." He said.
"I shouldn't have done that, it was unfair to you." You said. Watching someone that was like your brother, tear himself apart must have been scarring.
"And our group was falling apart. When Seonghwa hyung and Jongho revealed that they knew the truth, we became divided."
"Oh, Yunho..." You let out a small gasp.
"Hongjoong hyung barely came home because he felt betrayed by Seonghwa hyung, Wooyoung wasn't happy and would instigate fights with San. We were a mess." Yunho said.
"I didn't know..." You knew that wasn't a good excuse or reason. You wished Jongho and Seonghwa had told you this was happening.
"We couldn't hold the group together. That's why the CEO put us on vacation for two months. I didn't even go home to see my family because I couldn't leave Mingi alone. He wasn't going to meet his mother in that state so I had to stay with him in the dorm and help him." He told you.
"I was so scared. I didn't know what to do. But I had to be strong for everyone, for Mingi. I tried to take on his burden and pain, I comforted him but who comforted me?" He wiped his tears.
"I'm sorry." You moved forward to wrap your arms around him. Surprisingly, Yunho didn't fight your hug. He threw his head back as he sobbed.
"I'm not the bad guy."
"You're not. You're far from, Yunho." You denied, hugging him tighter. Slowly, he lifted his hands to grasp the material of your hoodie.
He held you for support as he cried his heart out. All the months of having to be strong for Mingi and the rest of Ateez, he could finally let go. You offered him the comfort that he sought.
"Why can't I be happy for him?" He asked. You didn't have an answer and you knew Yunho wasn't looking for one either. You hated that you were the reason he was feeling this anguish, the reason he felt like a bad friend to Mingi.
"I can't always be there for him..."
"You don't have to be. It's okay to not always be strong, Yunho." You told him. You knew Yunho carried the weight of the responsibility of taking care of Mingi.
"Please don't hurt him again. He won't be able to take it." Yunho said, his head falling onto your shoulder.
"I won't. I won't make you two go through this again." You promised.
After you left Yunho to have some space, you went to find Hongjoong. You texted Mingi that you were going to Hongjoong's room to rest for a bit, to which he whined about for a bit but ultimately was okay with it.
"Tired?" Hongjoong asked, resting on his side as he stroked your back. You hummed, turning your head to the side so you weren't lying faced down.
"Emotionally drained." You breathed out. You told Mingi and Hongjoong that you will not tell them what happened with Yunho. It was something private that you wouldn't tell anyone.
"I can imagine." He comforted, moving the stroke your head.
"I'm not your cat." You huffed, rolling over so you laid on him. He blinked, taken aback by your actions but stayed still.
"When are you guys leaving?" You asked as you stared at the ceiling with Hongjoong under you.
"In 3 days. It's free days." He replied, totally unbothered by you practically squishing him. You hummed, so you only had 2 days left with the boys. Your chest suddenly felt tight.
"I'll make the most of the 2 days I have then." You said. Hongjoong was remained quiet at your statement. Of course he didn't want to leave you behind. If he could, he would pay for you and Haneul to pack up and return home with them. But your safety was already compromised once, he wasn't going to let it happen again.
*KNOCK KNOCK*
"Come in." You said, ending with a yawn. Seonghwa walked in, stopping when he noticed your position, draped over Hongjoong.
"Who is it?" Hongjoong grunted.
"Hey, Hwa." You waved lazily, replying to Hongjoong's question at the same time. You groaned, wriggling as if to squish Hongjoong further into the bed.
"Oww, Indi!" He smacked your side. You snickered and did it again. But you didn't expect Hongjoong to flip you over, now it was his turn to squish you under his weight.
"Hwa, help me!" You whined. Seonghwa leaned against the wall with a smile, he missed seeing this.
"Stop laughing and help me before I suffocate!" You yelled in exaggeration. Hongjoong rolled his eyes but got off you. You sat up, smoothing you hair as you slapped his arm. The door opened and Haneul ran in with a much bigger figure.
"Canon ball!" Haneul and Wooyoung shouted between their laughs. You and Hongjoong yelped, wincing in pain from the impact of their bodies crashing on yours.
"Hey, baby. Did you have fun with Jongho?" You asked as Hongjoong moved her onto his lap, his arms hugging her.
"Mhmm! I got presents too! They're in bear oppa's room." She giggled.
"Presents? How nice..." You gave her a tight smile before you shot the maknae a look with wide eyes. He looked away, focusing on his phone and refusing to meet your eyes.
"Guys, we spoke about presents." You mumbled.
"Come on, Indigo. She looked so cute, I couldn't say no. I want to spoil her a little." Jongho sighed. You scoffed at that excuse.
"Can we go swimming now?" Haneul asked.
"I'm sorry I didn't bring your swimsuit, baby. Maybe another day." You apologised. You didn't know what the outcome of this talk with Ateez would have been so packing Haneul's swimsuit for the hotel pool was a thought that didn't even cross your mind. Suddenly, Jongho cleared his throat and held up a bag.
"Luckily! We saw one that was absolutely adorable on Haneul so we can go swimming." He pointed out. You shot him a flat look while Haneul squealed and cheered.
"Please, unnie?!" She begged.
"Sure, baby." You nodded. You went to the bathroom to help her change, laughing when you saw the polar bears printed on it.
"Baby, did you thank Jongho for buying you all the presents?" You asked her as you zipped up the swimsuit. She nodded her head with a big smile.
"That's my girl." You ruffled her hair. You wouldn't admit it but Jongho was right, Haneul was adorable.
"There's my little bear." Jongho smiled when he saw Haneul come out in her new swimsuit. You glared at him, pointing at him as a signal that you were keeping an eye on him and his gift buying. Haneul didn't need 20 pairs of sneakers.
"Let's change and go. We'll be with her in the shallow end the entire time." San promised. You nodded your head, you trusted the boys to properly take care of her.
"I'll go let Mingi know where we will be. Meet you guys at the pool." You waved and went to Mingi's room.
"Mings? Are you sleeping? Where are-" You nearly screamed as you were suddenly pinned against the wall the moment you walked in. Mingi chuckled, pushing the door close with his foot.
"I missed you." He leaned down, nuzzling against your neck.
"If you weren't holding my hands, I would smack you for scaring me like that." You scoffed.
"I know, that's why I'm not letting you go~" He said, pinning your hands by the side of your head. He planted kisses along your jawline.
"Mings, they're waiting for us by the pool." You told him.
"I only have 2 more days with you. Please let me be selfish and keep you with me. Anyway, you know the boys will take care of Haneul while I take care of you." He said, letting you go. But only briefly because his hands came to your waist and pulled you against him. He hugged you tightly.
"I wish I could take you home with me." He whispered.
"Me too. But we will make it work right?" You replied, arms winding around his neck as you tip toed.
"Yes, we will. That's a promise." He pulled away, looking into your eyes before pressing his lips against yours. When he broke the kiss, he just stared at you.
"Will you tell me what you spoke to Yunho about?"
"No. I told you that conversation remains between him and I. Even if you're my boyfriend and he's your best friend, I won't give anything away. If he wants to tell you, he can." You shrugged.
"I miss hearing you call me your boyfriend. Say it again." He grinned cheekily, making you roll your eyes.
"My boyfriend." You repeated.
Mingi kissed your forehead. He couldn't believe that you were in his arms again. Even if you were inevitably going to part ways again, you both knew it was only temporary. He was going to savour and cherish these 2 days with you.

continuing from the eggdad post i made a month ago, issue #60 (and #59. and #50) has given me so much more to think abt in like. one panel.
metal sonic WANTS to be the golden child so bad he wants to be the best kid ever and formerly, when it was really just him vs orbot + cubot and the general badniks, that was easy. like. they don't even know there's a competition, they aren't even trying, most of them aren't CAPABLE of trying (not as much as metal). he's winning by default
then comes belle. she's not competing with metal but she's interesting. eggman finds her interesting enough to extend a hand out for her to join her - she's fine work, intriguing, even if she's against him. he made her and look at her. she doesn't know there's a competition and she doesn't even want to win but she's neck and neck for eggman's interest`
Tumblr media
that's not fair. that's not fair.
then the shadow androids. i can't remember who it was but someone pointed out how metal seems to be jealous, unhappy at least, that eggman is so proud of the shadow androids. i don't think he's shown as much interest in eggman's creations before - maybe the metal virus but that doesn't quite slot into a creation in terms of metal or belle or the androids - or maybe i'm wrong. even if he has, i think his 'interest' (bad way of putting it but i can't think of another word rn) is sort of built from this new competitor in his internal competition
he's never had to worry abt eggman finding someone, or something else, useful, bc he's always been the top choice. the golden child. the one who obeys his father to the end. the one who's programmed to do nothing else. belle's rattled him. eggman directed attention to her. she's not even on their side! why does eggman care?
Tumblr media
why is eggman so proud of the shadow androids? he's right there.
i think his pursuit of tangle, even though it left eggman in an arguably vulnerable position (the city was recovering from shadow's chaos overload, there were just three intruders, sonic and co. were trying to find him), is indicative of this. get rid of the present threat. focus on her capture. do something right. prove to eggman he's the successful child. show him he's the best
Tumblr media
he made metal to be.
it just makes eggman's line in issue #60 so much crueller - metal did his best, taking on sonic and his friends alone, trying to get rid of the problem, and all eggman can think abt is the wrong he's done. how he needs to be corrected.
Tumblr media
how bad metal is at being the golden child when it's all he's for.
he's never going to be good enough. but his system won't let him realise that. his coding will convince him otherwise.
metal will keep trying because it's all he can do.

Hello, I'm pretty new to the Superboy fandom. Can I ask you this question:
Tumblr media
This part on his Wikipedia page caught my attention.
Do you know the instances (issues, panels, lines, etc) where Kon-el expresses that he doesn't want to be considered Superman's sidekick or similar sentiments?
I would really like to understand more about his feelings regarding his role in relation to Superman and his feelings toward the big man himself.
Thank you, and I apologize if any part of my ask sounds rude to you.
hoookay this is probably gonna be a bit of a doozy but i'll try and keep it concise!!!
first of all, rec-wise, you're probably gonna wanna read the entirety of "reign of the supermen" and "the return of superman". which is a lot, i know, but there's so much going on there that it's honestly hard for me to pick and choose any single issue out of it that would make sense as a standalone.
so at first, before clark himself comes back on the scene, we get things like the classic "don't ever call me 'superboy!'" panel as well as things like this:
Tumblr media
where it's clear that kon sees himself as superman, the "real" superman. he does also acknowledge that he's young and he needs to learn to be and do better, as when john henry irons tells him he needs to accept responsibility for his showboating causing frank the helicopter pilot's death, so it's not like he's a full-on arrogant jackass about being the best already, but at this point "superman" is his entire identity. he's not shy about the fact that he's a clone, either; he tells lois, and later, everyone in metropolis via tv, that he is a kryptonian clone and obviously not the og superman himself, but he's still insistent that he is superman.
a fun side note here: this is actually before the retcon that kon was a human with a metagene, so he is actually a full clone of superman!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in fact that's part of why lois knows something is up with cyborg superman in the wake of the destruction of coast city. it's not entirely relevant to the question of their relationship except that it IS my favorite interpretation and also i think it adds a particular flavor to kon's relationship to superman as the gold standard he was made to achieve, the model he was made to emulate.
Tumblr media
"Superman... the first Superman... didn't let Doomsday trash his town... and I won't let these creeps rip it down!"
superman is his role model in every way. he respects him a lot even in death and wants to be as much like him as he can. at this point kon's definitely a hotheaded and easily-distracted kid, but he's also all of three weeks old, so...
Tumblr media
"Ripping free of this trap would be child's play for Superman... but I'm his clone, aren't I?"
so we can see from early on kon definitely ties his sense of self and his sense of self-worth to "how am i measuring up to superman?" that's a recurring theme we'll see with him over and over.
by the end of the fight with hank henshaw, kon has fully accepted that superman's back and is The OG:
Tumblr media
"Check that, Blondie. I'm not Superman. That guy's Superman! The one and only!"
after this we get the "actually a human clone with a ttk metagene" retcon and kon's departure for hawaii:
Tumblr media
he leaves for two primary reasons: a) to make a name for himself because he wants to be worthy of the superboy/superman mantle and the s-shield, and b) because editorial wanted superboy to be its own separate title. he thinks the world of superman and wants to make him proud, essentially, while also maintaining his independence.
(clark is also around and interacting him during that retcon arc but i'm a little tired and don't wanna go hunt down any more panels right now, so ... that's for another day.)
and then of course there's superboy (1994) #59, where kon actually gets the name kon-el, something incredibly meaningful to both him and clark:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in summary: kon really, really looks up to clark. he wants to be worthy of his trust and often berates himself when he feels like he's not being enough like superman. his strong drive for independence is part of that: he wants to be totally independent and capable on his own, just like superman.

11:57 pm.
It's 11:57 pm, and your doorbell is ringing.
Fear isn't the first thing on your mind as you drag yourself from your bed to the foyer of your home, staring at the wooden panel before you with a twinge of resentment.
"Coming, coming," you yawn when the doorbell rings once more. "I heard you the first time." The porch light flicks on and illuminates the cast of bugs now awakened by their personal sun. You want to stop and stare at the moths dancing around and celebrating the return of their beloved light, but you have to silence the doorbell ringer first.
One sleepy eye peeks out at the figure standing alone on the porch, and then - upon realizing who's there - you unlock and open the door. "Suguru," you mumble. "What're you doing here so late at night?"
Suguru - standing in your doorway with a sly smile and wearing only a t-shirt and joggers - opens his mouth to answer but then opts to step inside first. You let him in instinctively, but something about his demeanor is off. He's never come around late in the evenings just to hang out - your college days are long over, and he'd stopped the late-night rendezvous with Satoru years ago.
"I wanted to be the first to wish you a happy birthday," Geto offers, shrugging. "You know, you're turning twenty-six... and all that."
You frown as you close the door behind him. "That's it?" Your inquiry leaves Geto slightly shocked, but you brush past the black-haired man without much thought. "It's almost midnight," you grumble. "You should be in bed."
"But it's midnight on a Friday," he retorts, pulling something out from his back pocket. "And I've got two Take 5 bars I want to share with you."
"You should've just called." You stand in the kitchen, a few paces away from the jovial man, as the clock turns to 11:59 pm.
"Where's the fun in that?" You pause, sobering up finally.
"What'd you really come here for, Su?" The man lowers his eyes, biting the inside of his cheek before placing the candy bars on the breakfast bar. "I know you didn't practically ring my doorbell to death just for shits and giggles." Suguru fumbles around in his pants pocket and produces the final offering. Without words, you eye it carefully, measuring the length before sighing.
"Share it with me?" Suguru wonders, and you sigh before nodding.
"No funny business, though."
"God as my witness," he murmurs, hands in the air and the joint pinched between his forefinger and thumb. "I won't pull anything silly."
"This is something silly," you're humming against his mouth thirty minutes later. "This is funny business."
"Nah," Suguru replies, his fingers rolling his shirt over his abs and then his head. "I don't find anything funny right now."
"The last time we hooked up, it was just like this." Your head is swimming with lust, just like the last time.
"Yeah, just kiss me." The groan Geto emits is ungodly, you think as you roll over his hips. He smells like a fresh shower, some type of musk you can't place, and the faint aroma of saltwater. You can't stop kissing him, not when he smells and looks and feels this good.
Suguru allows you a few seconds of air as he pulls back, undoing the tie of his joggers and pushing them down his hips. He's apparently gone commando - no underwear in sight - and his girthy cock angles up against his stomach.
You know his curves and dips and the ridges around his skin by heart; every scar, every chewed fingernail, every hair is stored away in your memory. You're sure it's the same for your hookup, but the thought slips from your mind as he fiddles with the robe around your body and shoves a hand down your underwear.
"Shaven," he notes, raising his brows. "That's new. Seeing anyone special?"
"No," you admit a little too freely. "No one."
"That's what I thought." Suguru angles his chin at you while slipping a finger past your folds and discovering the ocean that awaits his touch. "And you're telling the truth, I see."
You pretend to squirm away, but Geto flips you around so your back is on the couch cushions, and he's above you, taking your wrists in one of his hands before trailing his thick fingers down your skin. "I'm going to give you your birthday dick tonight. Then, I'll leave. And should things remain the same," he continues. "I'll be here regularly to give you a little tune-up."
"I don't need to be maintained," you bite out.
"Your cunt says otherwise," Geto teases, slipping two fingers into you. You clench up and moan, shivering violently. "And your mouth says so, too."
"I hate you."
"You just hate that you love me." Geto's fingers disappear but are replaced with his cock. He slips into you easily, his cockhead breaching your walls for the first time in years. Suguru can't seem to fathom that he hadn't fucked you in so long, calling it "a major lapse of judgment" to let you go without "regular dick appointments."
"I don't need servicing," you retort once more as he rocks into you. But the look on his face tells you he doesn't believe you. As you're getting dicked-down on the couch, your head is fogged up like a windowpane in winter with the memories of all the amazing orgasms you'd had with Suguru.
Now...
"You're going to make me cum fast if you keep squeezing my dick like that; you know it's been years since I've had you."
"Who's fault is that?" you utter, holding your legs back for him as he drills deeper into you.
"Not mine," Suguru deflects, sinking balls-deep. You both moan simultaneously, feeling every inch of your body relax under the spell of weed and lust. "Fuck it. I'm definitely going to cum inside you."
"I've got an IUD; you're fine." Suguru grunts, "good girl," without stopping, gripping your ankles for leverage. He continues to plow into you as the minutes tick past midnight, seeping right into your birthday and reinforcing the idea that you'd be on your back for the rest of the year.
"On your back and taking my cum," Suguru mutters in your ear, the sound making your insides tremble with excitement. "New year, new you, huh?"
"New year, new us," you proclaim, much to Suguru's pleasure.
"Yeah," he whimpers, thumbing your clit and mentally drifting off into his own world of endless pleasure while he fucks you. "New year, new me, too."

So I think everything's been said already about poor Astolfo and beautiful but creepy Charles and fucking Gano. But.
Chapter 59 solidified a theory I'd been rolling around in my head for a while based on how much of a "saviour" figure Roland is to Astolfo and how enduring Astolfo's hatred of vampires is. But there wasn't much evidence for it before the hiatus.
Olivier and Roland are protagonists from the Song of Roland. I think most of us know that at this point. Astolfo is also a character from that series, though I can't find the post now that says that he turned against Roland for a perceived betrayal, so maybe there's less evidence for this than I thought, but that particular bit of setup has now been confirmed as of Ch. 59 anyway.
But. Even before that. In the Song of Roland, Olivier dies in battle in Roland's arms after they make up about a disagreement. In the epic poem, the disagreement is about how Roland leads the battle (IIRC about calling for reinforcements?). I am convinced that Olivier will die in a similar fashion - before the hiatus ended I thought the disagreement would have been about Roland's involvement with the vampires, but now I'm wondering if it will be about Astolfo. In fact, now I'm thinking there may not be a disagreement at all, and instead Olivier's death will be due to him trying to protect Astolfo (to make up for his perceived failings in protecting him as shown in Ch. 58) from the plans the Church/Charles has for the kid.
Now, for Olivier's death to have emotional impact they're going to have to build up Olivier's character and his relationship to Roland (and if the Astolfo angle is true, also to Astolfo). Which is exactly what Ch. 58 started to do with the scene showing Olivier's guilt from not intervening about Astolfo's secret friend because he had been comparing the situation to his own clandestine friendship with Roland when they were kids. We got both pieces in one scene, woo! The more they dig into Olivier's backstory and his relationship to Roland, then more I will take that as evidence for Olivier's death (it can't hurt if we don't know much about the man, after all).
Now, the next piece is that I'm willing to bet that Olivier's death will be attributable to the Church's plans somehow, which Roland has already been suspicious of. My theory is that his death will be the final straw and he will defect to the vampire's side (well, specifically to Vanitas and Noe's side) in this conflict that's slowly bubbling to the surface between the Church and the vampires. Roland has been shown to be a "good" person who is able to look past ideologies and do what's right regardless of what he's been told is right. So it makes sense for him to eventually side with our protagonists, who are the "good guys". That could continue to happen from the shadows the way it has been up until now, with Roland covertly helping Vani and Noe, but to finish Roland's character arc I think it makes more sense for him to fully defect, to fully break away from the hateful institution that's been using him and his faith for the sake of their own goals instead of for the good of humans/vampires, which is what Roland ultimately cares more about.
This defection to the "vampire" side will be perceived as the ultimate betrayal by Astolfo (as we just saw in Ch. 59 with the humans he killed), and set up a compelling and tragic conflict between these two characters who previously were so close to each other and are now on opposite sides. Now, after Ch. 59 it seems that Olivier's death and Roland's defection aren't necessary for this bit of tragic storytelling, but I imagine it'll compound. I know they already used the word betrayal and hatred in Ch. 59, but I got more of a feeling of "abandonment" from Astolfo based on the last couple of panels. If Roland defecting happens, that may be what tips it over into outright hatred and betrayal.
Either way, RIP to Olivier. Before the hiatus I thought his death was just going to be part of Roland's character progression, but now I think he's going to be unfortunate collateral damage from Astolfo and Roland's conflict.

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR MEMOIRE 59
Tumblr media
Run through Google translate ^
Tumblr media
Astolfo is so cute I have never wanted to hug a fictional character more than I do now JUST LOOK AT HIM!
Also is it just me or is Roland more buff. Mochizuki did confess that everytime she draws Roland he gets better physique (and fluffier hair) but wow this is wild.
Tumblr media
He’s so cute I can’t take it I love him so much he deserves so much better, if there's any Astolfo haters out there you better keep your opinion to yourself!
We see this panel in the extra chapter from vol 9 it’s just larger this time and notably missing Olivier's glare of annoyance despite the larger space.
Roland looks so sad I need to know what happened between him and Astolfo so bad.
Tumblr media
This scene is set up that it makes my immediate thought that it will be the last panel of the chapter or that it will be the last panel before we step away from Astolfo's past and go back to the current timeline (since we know that some panels contain stuff that seems to happen in the current timeline) but I do think it might be the opening page of the chapter since it seems to start where 58 ended.
Translations by me! Sorry if it’s botched I tried making it make sense!
Tumblr media
Guess we’re getting more Astolfo pov this chapter and judging by the panels shown earlier (like 10 days ago) I’m guessing the first part is going to be flashbacks about him and it ends suddenly here or adds more?
Either way the characters we see in these panels seem to be from current timeline (these are the panels)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh shit. I mean we did get confirmation on this by Georges, once again in the extra chapter (thank you Georges and the extra chapter) but it’s nice getting it straight from Astolfo (or younger Astolfo). Seriously though what happened? Conflicting interests? A vampire attack? The churches interference/manipulation?
In this context, I guess this shows that Roland’s aware of Astolfo’s thoughts on him since it puts focus on his face in the panel. He definitely doesn’t approve of Astolfo's worship of him but I don’t see him confronting him about it though so I don’t know what happened there.
Tumblr media
(Sorry for how off centre it is!)
The guy who I presume is Charles' vice captain from the last chapter is behind Roland once again making me believe this is directly what happened after chapter 58 ended since that was were he was when Charles called for Roland.
I do think that it's Charles saying those lines since there wasn't anyone else in the room except the scar guy who doesn't seem to be speaking and Astolfo who clearly isn't saying that.
That seems to be Astolfo going up to Roland since the feet are small and bloodied. I do think that Roland was disappointed in himself for only being able to save one person which is why Charles is getting him to look after Astolfo so he knows he at least saved one life (which is quite sweet but this guy looks like a manipulator so...)
Roland looks so traumatised though and I'm not sure why. Astolfo was in pretty bad shape but the cloak (I think it was Roland's cloak?) was covering his body last chapter and I'm not sure if he still has it on in this panel so maybe that's where all the damage is? Or some other reason, maybe he was just shocked Astolfo was still alive after what happened.
Also I do have a life outside of stalking Mochizuki's twitter page (I just check it every 3 hours every day even in class it's not a problem)

TBHK CHAPTER 109 SPOILERS (ENDING)
Analysis + mini theory
don’t click if you don’t want to be spoiled !!
I’m the self proclaimed #1 Akane fan and like this chapter has destroyed me. It’s sent me PACING around my room just thinking about it.
This going to be all over the place, very long and probably a bit hard to read but I’ll keep it together as best as I can.
The Yorishoro situation. Akane human with human insides and obviously if ripped open he’ll die but as a clock keeper does he have similar insides to Mirai and Kako? They easily were defeated as that. Being the only clock keeper left and everywhere else checked it makes sense that he’s the one with the yorishoro. However it feels so weird for that to even be an option.
Kako and Mirai have been No.1 longer than Hanako has been No.7 as stated here,
(chapter 58)
Tumblr media
so why hide it inside Akane? They had somewhere else to hide it so why didn’t they keep it there? (unless there was a repeating cycle of getting a new student to be the Present). She still has yet to have that talk with him as well. *
(chapter 25)
Tumblr media
I feel it’s important to address this in relation. Akane states that the Clock Keepers tricked him into accepting his role by attempting to harm Aoi (and accuses Hanako of forcing Yashiro into working for him through trickery). He was only starting out middle school at the time of the incident, so it’s potentially been inside of him since then. Did they want him specifically to hide the yorishoro? What would it even be? My immediate thought was it would be Aoi related, but this is the yorishoro for all of them, and precedes Akane.
There is the potential it is maybe the pocket watch he carries which is a likely option. It allows him to stop time, and each yorishoro are deeply connected to the mysteries. Being able to protect/watch Aoi with it is important to him. And similar reasons may be for Kako and Mirai. I also question how he could even see the supernaturals prior to becoming one and it made sense to me; he’s going to die.
Death. Now onto my main reason for this entire post. I’m 100% certain at this point someone is going to die. Akane is a high contender and here’s my reasoning. He needs special glasses to allow him to continue going on as a student without seeing supernaturals. Yashiro can only see supernaturals because she is set to die within the following year.
(chapter 27)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Akane goes on to explain that the supernaturals aren’t like them and don’t care what happens to them, a hint at that he knows that he’d potentially die in the future or that I’m reading too much into it. Of course he could have that sixth sense, without being an exorcist, like Teru or Kou but with how high the stakes are for the next chapter it is very likely he’s going to die, in my opinion. But he’s only one of my two options.
My second option is Teru, and it’s mainly because of these panels back during the semester finals.
(chapter 59)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
why would he feel the need to say this? As far as I know, the near future he talks about hasn’t happened yet even though we’re 50+ chapters and I believe more than 5 arcs in). Teru assumes Kou will come to Akane, but why him and not his older brother? Unless Teru knew he was going to die. He’s been pretty unphased for most of this current arc despite the circumstances. So, here are my two options for how the next chapter goes. 1. tsukasa gets to akane
2. akane is protected again tsukasa
And who better to protect Akane than the exorcist himself? Those two are much closer to each other than the others with them being Student Council and often seen together. And despite any grudge towards Akane Teru might have, I’m certain he’d still jump in to protect him. He’s human before he’s supernatural. In the above photos Teru mentions that Kou will ask for Akane’s aid but then says that in a more specific way, to protect Kou with ‘all of your powers’. There’s the possibility Teru does die and Kou goes to Akane to try and bring him back but is in danger OR it has something to do with Yashiro.
What’s weird to me is how he specifies all of Akane’s powers. As far as reader knowledge, his power only affects the present by stopping time for 5-10 minutes, as well as enhanced physical strength. Either he has more powers up his sleeve that we’ve yet to see or he takes the role of No.1 entirely and inherits the other two Clock Keeper’s powers if they’re gone for good. It just feels very weird for someone to say that out of the blue if they don’t have even a tiny idea of their fate.
Also read that there could be a dark backstory/history reveal and god I want it to be one of them so bad I need more Akane content 🙏
* This could become a plot point with how the current arc is going (and if he survives)
Anyways thats my too many cents! I probably missed some points out or need to elaborate so if that’s needed I will.

America’s most radical experiment with drug decriminalization has ended, after more than three years of painful results. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has pledged to sign legislation repealing the principal elements of the ballot initiative known as Measure 110: Possessing hard drugs is again a crime in Oregon, and courts will return to mandating treatment for offenders. Oregonians had supported Measure 110 with 59 percent of the vote in 2020, but three years later, polling showed that 64 percent wanted some or all of it repealed. [...]
Measure 110 did not reduce Oregon’s drug problems. The drug-overdose-death rate increased by 43 percent in 2021, its first year of implementation—and then kept rising. The latest CDC data show that in the 12 months ending in September 2023, deaths by overdose grew by 41.6 percent, versus 2.1 percent nationwide. No other state saw a higher rise in deaths. Only one state, Vermont, ranks higher in its rate of illicit drug use.
[...] Neither did decriminalization produce a flood of help-seeking. The replacement for criminal penalties, a $100 ticket for drug possession with the fine waived if the individual called a toll-free number for a health assessment, with the aim of encouraging treatment, failed completely.
Unpaywalled link: https://archive.is/g4I2R from the Atlantic, so obviously the conclusions are pretty reactionary. Piece includes claiming Oregon never had a war on drugs despite Black Oregon Residents having 2.5 times as many possession convictions.
Surprisingly the economist here https://archive.is/29DIs in an older piece has a slightly better diagnosis.
What seems to be the failure of Measure 110 is a solely criminal justice approach
Portugal decriminalised possession of drugs for personal use in 2001, the first country to do so. There, drug-induced deaths have since fallen and street dealing is uncommon. But Portugal’s policy is different: offenders are taken to a police station and must go before a dissuasion panel at the Ministry of Health. Fully 80% of addicts then choose to start treatment. Repeat offenders face punishment, like being banned from bars, or community service, enforced by police. “The state still has a paternalistic approach,” says João Goulão, one of the architects of Portugal’s effort.
Supporters of Oregon’s policy hope that peer mentors—former addicts—can encourage people to enter treatment voluntarily. They were allocated extra funding in the same ballot measure in 2020. But although possession was decriminalised three months after voting, it took another 20 months for the funding to roll out fully. “If I had to do it all over again, I think I would reverse the way that we’ve done it,” reflects Rob Nosse, a state representative.
Even with the extra funding now being spent, Oregon’s drug treatment remains woefully scarce. Addiction-support workers in Portland estimate that the wait for residential treatment can be up to three months. Recent state analysis found that it needed 60% more inpatient facilities. But the extra money will be going to other services, like the mentors, as well as needle exchanges and supported housing.

It's a very similar expression, isn't it? There's even a little tear in Bahman's eye, too. (Bahman from Chapter 43, Zandeh from Chapter 59.)
I can't help it, my thoughts are so addled right now that I keep thinking of Bahman as being part of Team Hilmes. But he could so easily have been, couldn't he? I would have loved to see him interact with Zandeh (see: the old dog and new puppy discussion of it here, and I also love the thought of Bahman taking Zandeh under his wing and teaching him in military matters).
Tumblr media
The moment in Chapter 38 where Hilmes encounters him in Peshawar... The way he's hesitant, yet as he realises he's tentatively reaching out for Hilmes's proffered hand... If that moment hadn't been interrupted, if they'd been able to talk for a little longer, I wonder what would have happened?
And I keep looking at that expression on Hilmes's face (not that you can see all of it, which highlights Bahman's inability to recognise him and that it's not solely because he thinks he died 16 years ago, it's also because his face is covered by a mask). That panel focuses the attention on his smile, and the hand he's offering to Bahman, and I just... honestly, it makes me really sad, because here is someone who knew him before the palace fire, who must have been fond of him, and trusted by him as a child. Bahman is someone whose support Hilmes needs on a practical level, but isn't it more than that, too?
And though it's not evident in the manga, it's worth remembering that in the novels, seeking Bahman's loyalty is the whole reason Hilmes enters Peshawar Fortress in the first place! His encounter with Arslan was entirely unexpected!
I think having Bahman's support would have been good for him. And realistically I know Bahman would have remained just as torn up by the conflict as when he was with Arslan, but wouldn't it have been nice for him to reunite with Hilmes, who he thought was dead, and see him grow into a fine Shah?
Tanaka made some comment in the Reader's Guidebook that amounted to it essentially being merciful for a character like Bahman who is torn between two choices to be killed off. I don't think he's wrong, especially with the trajectory that canon took, but just as he gave his life for Arslan's sake in the anime and manga, I feel he would have done exactly the same thing for Hilmes under different circumstances.
Actually, let's look at Bahman's death scene, because it's something I've been wanting to discuss for a while now. The relevant manga chapters are 51 and 52.
I think everyone's aware that the anime and the OVAs both made the same choice regarding Bahman's death, in that he is inadvertently killed by Hilmes when protecting Arslan in Peshawar Fortress. (And I liked this change, personally.) But I don't think it's as commonly known that Arakawa also made some changes?
The event itself takes place similarly in Sindhura, but in the novels:
Bahman's inner conflict doesn't feature in his death, and
Gadhevi's spear was aimed at Bahman, so Bahman did NOT take a blow meant for Arslan as he did in the manga.
'“Your Highness Arslan! Please hurry up and go!” Before he could finish his words, Bahman unsheathed his sword and cut down the attacking Sindhuran soldiers in a cloud of blood and smoke. Although he was already over sixty years old, his skillful swordsmanship showed no signs of decline. However, just as he cut down two more enemy soldiers, Gadhevi picked up a spear, aimed it at the old general, and threw it. The spear made a whistling sound as it flew towards him, stabbing hard into the area between Bahman’s left shoulder and chest. Bahman let out a short groan and fell down.' (Book 3, Chapter Three, Part v)
We don't get any of his internal thoughts before he dies, either.
By contrast, in the manga, when Arslan's life is in danger? Bahman hesitates. And honestly to me this change is just so masterful that I really ought to have included it on the list of my favourite differences between novels and manga.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yet even as he acknowledges that thought, his body is already in motion, moving to take the spear that was meant for Arslan. So here's why I like this scene so much:
It feels as though Bahman's conflictedness may well be the very reason he dies. If he hadn't hesitated then, if he had called out instantly to warn Arslan, would Arslan have dodged? Would Bahman or Narsus have instead cut down the spear before it reached him? Bahman's death didn't have to be the outcome, whereas in the novels it feels like there was no way for it to have been avoided.
The fact that his conflict doesn't just stem from being undecided who he should give his loyalty too, but because he recognises the turmoil that having two candidates for the throne will bring to Pars. His concern is for his country; out of Arslan and Hilmes, who will be the better ruler?
And as usual, Arakawa shows us so much. That panel of Hilmes that Bahman sees in his moment of indecision, the way it's sort of shadowed and his eyes aren't visible, because even though Bahman knew him when he was a boy, he doesn't know him in the same way now. What does he know of Hilmes? He is clearly competent in matters of war, and on the surface more equipped to lead than a boy of Arslan's age. And he has royal blood, which Bahman knows that Arslan does not.
But he must also know of Hilmes's involvement in the Lusitanian invasion, and his brutality in trying to kill Arslan. I think Bahman's decision to give his life to save Arslan's comes not just from being unable to stand by and watch Arslan to die before his eyes, but because although he worries about whether Arslan is right for the task, he has misgivings about Hilmes, too. It would have been easier, after all, to do nothing. To let Arslan die. In making the active choice to save Arslan, I can't help but see it as him hoping that Arslan will be better for Pars than Hilmes would have been.
And yeah, it does feel tragic that he'll never be able to see for certain that he made the right choice, worrying about the softness in Arslan's nature (as evidenced by his refusal to leave Bahman's side even when it endangered him). Yet that same softness that can be seen as a weakness is also a strength, isn't it? And there is little of it to be seen in Hilmes.
I also appreciate that it's clear he's not just worried for the fate of Pars, but for Arslan's individual fate, too. Surely it's the time he's spent with him in Sindhura getting to know him on a personal level that has resulted in this moment where he opts to give his life to save Arslan, effectively choosing him over Hilmes. And when I think about it like that, while in both cases a change was made so that Bahman gave his life for Arslan's sake, ultimately I prefer this over his death in the anime. The angst potential of Hilmes being the one to accidentally kill his old teacher is good though.
Personally, I like that his death ends on a hopeful note. Despite his worries, he is able to place his faith in Arslan due to the fact that he has companions such as Daryun and the others who will lend him their support and strength and can offset his youth and inexperience as he grows into the good king that Bahman implores him to become before he dies. It feel like he's made peace with his decision.
One more thing I like from Bahman's death scene:
Tumblr media
Bahman's recognition that he's about to die coming as he looks up at Azrael, named for the "Herald of Death" (an angel in Parsian cosmology) and thinks of his already departed friend, Vahriz.

golden kamuy lines that i wondered about so i went back and checked what they were in japanese
i checked these lines not because i thought the translations were wrong, but because i know that when translating japanese to english, a certain amount of rephrasing and smoothing over is necessary, so i was just curious about what they originally said. as such, my own translations included herein are not meant to be corrections.
✔️ chapter 1 - sugimoto's line about almost killing a superior officer (which is never touched on in the story again) - 気に入らない上官を半殺しにしなきゃ "If I hadn't half-killed a superior officer I didn't like" (rest of line omitted). ki ni iranai = dislike. hangoroshi is literally half-killing. so it really was just an officer he didn't like...
✔️ chapter 5, page 3 - the line EH scans translated as "It's for the woman I love" is actually 惚れた女のためだ "It's for the woman I fell for." it's a very subtle difference, but it makes sense looking back; using the verb "horeta" leaves room for doubt as to whether he's still in love with her right now.
✔️ chapter 15 - "Sutu are not to be used lightly." - ストゥの乱用は消して許されていない "Misuse of the sutu is absolutely not allowed."
✔️ chapter 22 - "Who cares?! / You walking Ainu dictionary!" - 知らねーよ / アイヌのうんちくぅ!" the translation is accurate. sugimoto adds an extra u for emphasis to "unchiku," meaning "great erudition, extensive knowledge, vast stock of knowledge"
✔️ chapter 27, page 4 - EH scans has tanigaki asking nihei tetzusou, "How's your daughter doing now?" but VIZ says it's "Wait, a daughter?" so which is correct? - what tanigaki says is 娘が? "Your daughter?" he's echoing back a clause that nihei used to start a sentence, as if he's only just now noticing that nihei mentioned having a daughter. that's why he paused in the panel before, because it took that long to process. so VIZ had the correct translation in this case. 😱 EH scans's translation would be correct if he was saying "musume ha?" instead of "ga" because that would be more like asking, "How's your daughter?" but that wouldn't quite make sense in this context anyway.
✔️ chapter 43, page 11 - when ogata tells nikaidou about how he loves his grandmother so he doesn't want to shoot huci — バアチャン子の俺にそんなことをさせるな - he says baachanko... he basically calls himself a grandma's boy. "Don't make a grandma's boy like me do something like that."
✔️ chapter 49, page 21 - about how the knife is smaller than shiraishi's dick - 白石のちんぽより小さい刃物じゃ「日露戦争帰り」は殺せねえぜ "[Veterans of the Russo-Japanese war] can't be killed by a knife that's smaller than Shiraishi's dick."
✔️ chapter 59 - when ogata offers to work for hijikata - 腕の立つ用心棒はいらねえかい EH scans's translation, "How would you like to hire a skilled bodyguard?" is just right.
✔️ chapter 68, page 16 - when sugimoto has the aconite paste on his tongue to test its potency and he starts making noises, EH scans and VIZ both translated it as just moaning and groaning. but what he really says is ほっ…ほっへ ("ho… hohhe") and then ほっへふへッ ("hohhehuhe") and then はやふほっへッ ("hayafuhohhe"). these are not mere groans; these are words that are garbled by not being able to put his lips together. based on the vowels alone, i think what he's saying in each line respectively has to be とっ…取って ("T-take it off") and then 取ってくれ ("Please take it off") and then 早く取って ("Take it off already!"). neither EH scans nor VIZ bothered to try to decipher these... but then i guess they'd have to misspell it in english too, which is kinda unpleasant. to be fair, the people around him didn't understand what he was saying either.
✔️ chapter 95, page 5 - ogata's line to suzukawa about getting more than 2k meters away from him - 二千メートル以上俺から逃げきれるか試してみるか?EH scans got it exactly and it sounds so cool: "Do you want to try and see if you can get more than 2,000 meters away from me?" VIZ pared it down for no reason: "Wanna see if you can get out of range?" hate it.
✔️ chapter 114 - when ogata says the model 38 rifle is too good for sugimoto, he literally uses the expression "pearls before swine," as in 豚に真珠 buta ni shinju. i didn't know they had that one in japanese too. (EDIT: i had forgotten that "pearls before swine" is a biblical phrase so of course it would have spread as far as the bible has spread.)
✔️ chapter 117 - kantarou tells hijikata and the others that kamezou is dead, and EH scans has ienaga saying "Kame…" and i interpreted that as like, repeating part of an unfamiliar name because she doesn't recognize it because he was such a minor character. but in the raws in fact she says, "Kame-kun…" as in, that must have been what she called him. of course ienaga would pay attention to an edible young chinpira like kamezou i guess
✔️ chapter 119, page 20 - the line about how they're used to being fed - すっかり餌付けされてる "They're totally used to being fed." i have to give you the verbatim jisho.org definition of 餌付け because it's too funny in this context: "artificial feeding (of wild animals); accustoming (a wild animal) to accepting food from humans."
✔️ chapter 126, page 19 - koito's thoughts about usami getting his stick figures turned into tattoos - めちゃくちゃ気合入ってる...!! - "He's incredibly fired up...!!" or maybe "He's so into it...!!" or maybe "He's seriously motivated...!!"
✔️ chapter 138, page 20 - missing parts friends - tsurumi says, 脳みそが欠けた気分はどうだね? / 我々は「脳みそ欠け友達」だな…… "How does it feel to be missing brain tissue? / Looks like we're [missing brain tissue friends] now......" and then the narrative box says ふたりはカケトモ "The two of them are kaketomo." so basically "kaketomo" is short for "(noumiso) kake tomodachi" (missing brain tissue friends) and that's what EH scans translated as "missing parts friends." no great way to translate it, really.
✔️ chapter 139 - when ienaga yells about bringing back asirpa-san, the implication is that she ate some of sugimoto's brain while she was operating on him (and thus gained some of his qualities, namely concern for asirpa). what sugimoto says is ...おまえつまみ食いしただろ which EH scans translated it as, "…You took a few nibbles, didn't you?" which is accurate. viz translated it as "Did you eat part of my brain?" which has added meaning but only insofar as it explains what sugimoto actually means. つまみ食い tsumamigui refers to sneakily eating bits of food.
✔️ chapter 139 - koito's dad talking to sugimoto about a letter he got from hanazawa when he died - 花沢中将どんは切腹すっときオイへ手紙をくれもした / 息子の勇作どんが最前線で戦死して / 「愚かな父の面目を保ってくれた」と... "When Lieutenant General Hanazawa-don committed seppuku, he left me a letter. / It said that by dying on the front lines, his son Yuusaku-don / [preserved the honor of his foolish father]..." (the phrase "menboku wo tamotsu" means "saving face" or "preserving honor.") this letter must have been written by ogata hyakunosuke.
✔️ chapter 145, page 11 - tsukishima's line about sugimoto taking too many hits to the head in the stenka - 鯉登少尉殿これは「妙案」じゃありません // 「殴られ過ぎ」ですッ literally "Second Lieutenant Koito! This isn't [a brilliant plan]! // This is [got punched too much]!"
✔️ chapter 149 - tsukishima's moment of clarity - ふと我に返って思ったのは "I suddenly came to my senses and thought" (sentence is continued in next speech bubble, but this is the part i cared about.)
✔️ chapter 165 - ogata's conversation with yuusaku about killing and guilt - these are all my translations. yuusaku says なぜなら誰もが人を殺すことで罪悪感が生じるからだと...!! ("That's because the act of killing people produces feelings of guilt in everyone…!!"). then ogata says 罪悪感? / 殺した相手に対する罪悪感ですか? // そんなもの… みんなありませんよ // そう振る舞っているだけでは? // みんな俺と同じはずだ ("Feelings of guilt? / You mean feelings of guilt toward the ones they killed? // No one has... anything like that. // Aren't they all just acting that way? // I'm sure they're all like me." NEXT PAGE: yuusaku hugs him and says兄様はけしてそんな人じゃない / きっと分かる日が来ます // 人を殺して罪悪感を微塵も感じない人間がこの世にいて良いはずがないのです ("You're not that kind of person at all, brother. // I know you'll understand someday. // After all, it cannot be that there are humans in this world who don't feel even the slightest bit of guilt about killing people.") that last line is really hard to translate right, but this is the best i've got... anyway the important word in this conversation is zaiakukan 罪悪感 "feelings of guilt." (you can't translate it as just "guilt" because in english, "guilt" can also mean "the state of having actually done something wrong." and zaiakukan doesn't actually mean that you've done anything wrong. it's just a guilty feeling.)
✔️ chapter 169, page 5 - when koito says he hates ogata, he uses the word "daikirai" 大嫌い. kirai and daikirai both mean "hate" but if you know that "dai" means "big," then you know which word is stronger.
✔️ chapter 185, page 10 - when tsukishima yells at svetlana - 生きてることくらい伝えたらどうだ!! // どんな気持ちであんたを待ってるか… // どうしてそんな残酷なことが出来るんだ!! "Why don't you at least let them know you're alive?!! // Think of how they must feel waiting for you... // How can you do something so cruel?!!" this scene is important because it shows us that tsukishima still has a human heart, despite everything
✔️ chapter 204, page 3 - tanigaki's line about being famous for his big balls - 毎回あのネタ使うから / 樺太中のアイヌに俺の金玉がデカいと知れてしまったけどな "But because you use that line every time, / now Ainu all over Karafuto know that my balls are huge."
✔️ chapter 227, page 3 - tsurumi's line to usami (who just kicked that kid's neck in) that was weirdly translated by VIZ as "You always intended to do this to your friend." - that translation is just wrong. the line is (in dialect) 親友にこんげ真似をすっと分かっていたんだば... meaning, "Had I known you would do this to your best friend…" maybe because VIZ was going by the volume version, they got confused by the dialect? they must have misread the "sutto" (meaning approximately "that you would do") as "zutto" (meaning "always").
✔️ chapter 231, page 8 - koito says 私は鶴見中尉殿と月島軍曹を最後まで見届ける覚悟でいる "I am resolved to see Second Lieutenant Tsurumi and Sergeant Tsukishima through to the end."
✔️ chapter 263, page 8 - shiraishi's line about boutarou taking his bullets - お前ならあのまま俺を弾除けにするはずだ // らしくねえな "You of all people would have stayed where you were and used me as a shield. // That wasn't like you at all." approximately.
✔️ chapter 268 - tsurumi's outburst about the miserable end that awaited wilk and the others - そのカムイを守る戦いのためにウイルクたちはどんな悲惨な最後を遂げたのかこれから教えてあげよう "Now I will tell you about how Wilk and the others met their wretched end in their battle to protect those kamuy!" approximately. or maybe, "Now I will tell you about how Wilk and the others fighting to protect those kamuy met their wretched end!" the former is a little more literally accurate, but the latter sounds better...
✔️also chapter 268 - after past tsurumi hears that it's wilk, the line translated by EH scans as, "So he's become involved with my life again, after all." - やっぱりまた私の人生に関わってきたか EH scans got it exactly right. VIZ got it wrong and translated it as, "Yet again my life changes." not remotely close. you got the ONLY VERB IN THE SENTENCE wrong.
✔️ chapter 300 - when ogata sees vasily's binocular reflection and he's very pleased, he says 運命は俺に味方した / 世界が俺は正しいと言っている "Fate has taken my side. / The world is telling me I'm right."
✔️ ch306 - koito tells tsurumi to release tsukishima - もうこの男を解放してあげてください "Please set this man free already."

Who appears the most in Tralla La?
Tumblr media
Continuing my quest to count every story on the Inducks top 100!
Once again there are spoilers for the story + I only counted panels so page count is just calculated from percentage.
Lah Deedah - 8 (panels) / 1.05 (pages) / 4.79% (of the story)
HDL - 58 / 7.64 / 34.73%
Donald - 59 / 7.77 / 35.33%
Scrooge - 114 / 15.01 / 68.26%
(My thoughts and additional stats below!)
Entry and exit stats!
Scrooge - 1 (0.6%) / 167 (100%)
Donald - 17 (10.18%) / 164 (98.2%)
HDL - 22 (13.17%) / 166 (99.4%)
Lah Deedah - 85 (50.9%) / 162 (97.01%)
Tumblr media
They go to Tralla La at panel 68 or 40.72% through the story. They leave the story at the same time we last see Lah Deedah!
The story is listed as an Uncle Scrooge story, which I would agree with. I will admit that I didn't reread it for this, so my memory might be wrong, but I don't think it is!
