I have this fic idea that came to me at midnight but what about a modern setting where Apollo and Artemis are archery shop owners with an archery range to teach kids in the back. They rotate every week. One week you're greeted with a handsome twink with golden hair and the next you're greeted with the definition of "butch lesbian" just think about it. One week of literal sunshine "Hi! Welcome to Leto's Twins how can I help you today? If you're here for archery class Arty's in the back :]" One week of tired overworked "I cant deal with this anymore" "Hello. This is Leto's Twins. You've seen the sign. Archery class is in the back, taught by my little bitch brother." Just an entire fic of Artemis and Apollo being siblings and funny shenanigans Apollo: Arty I just found the most PERFECT guy Artemis: You said that about Commodus and he was the worst person to walk the earth. Apollo: He's different! I know it! Artemis: 'Pollo the only person so far I can think of that was a man and a good person was Hektor.

Everyone talks about ancient greek toys but no one ever talks about the fact that there is a toy chicken with wheels and not just horses with wheels
I MEAN LOOK-
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
AND THEN ONE OF THEM IS JUST A CHICKEN
IMAGINE INVADING TROY AND KILLING THEM BECAUSE OF A MAKESHIFT CHICKEN
THAT WOULD BE BOTH HILARIOUS AND TERRIFYING AND I CAN'T PICK WHICH EMOTION I WOULD FEEL FIRST IN THAT SITUATION

happy father's day i'm thinking about this outis line again
Tumblr media
I always thought it was a bit out of pocket considering this isn't too long after the events of Canto III, even with how Outis was being harsher this Canto.
But I then I remembered that Outis' son is the same age as Sinclair.
Her son, who thinks that she died in the Smoke War (the in universe equivalent to the Trojan War as depicted in the Iliad and the Odyssey) because she hasn't been home in years. Her son who cannot cry out to her. And her son, who is currently in much the same position as Sinclair regarding his self-perception and ability to fight, as Telemachus refers to himself as "a weakling knowing nothing of valor" (Book 2 of the Odyssey, line number and exact wording depend on translation).
I think this line reflects more on Outis and her anxieties about her family thinking that she's dead, as well as a reference to Telemachus experiencing his own journey to manhood, much like Sinclair.
I think there's also things to be said for the parallels between Sinclair and Telemachus, even just the ones imagined by Outis. Hell's Chicken had her showing a very paternal worry over his diet (raise your hand if your dad has ever said you'll be short forever if you don't eat right). Overall, even though Sinclair and Telemachus only share the bones of a coming of age narrative, Outis is seeing connections there because she misses her family.
Tumblr media
As with this one. Again, she's showing her hand more than she means to. Though she's talking to Dongrang, I think she's also talking to herself. Trying to reassure herself that home will always be waiting. Dongrang, however, decides not to return, but to pursue glory no matter who he hurts in the process. The Odyssey also contrasts the pursuit of glory with the desire to return home. Odysseus has to choose humility in order to return.
Outis has been keeping up a careful persona around us, but it's slipping. Her desire to return home is seeping through even as she tries to assert herself by clinging to the glory from a war that's long since ended.

Ares as... rooster?
Tumblr media
[ID: An image of a brown-gold rooster cawing. The rooster has a large, six-pointed comb and orange-red round eyes. The background is blurry, highlighting the rooster's neck and face.]
ARES IS A WONDERFUL GOD, and there is little academia about him in particular. There is much about the analysis of him in the Iliad and function in myth, but less about his cultus and more obscure traits. While researching, I stumbled upon a very different Ares….as a rooster. So, as a quick post, here is a small bit on Ares and roosters.
ROOSTERS IN ANCIENT GREECE
Roosters are funny creatures. They’re very feisty, but also sometimes cowardly—affectionate, but terribly bloodthirsty. I have worked with several roosters in my time, and they’ve either been useless or fiends. Hens are often much better at their jobs. A good rooster though is priceless, and I’ll never forget the white tufted rooster at my job we used to have that would cuddle but also attack dogs if they dared step near his flock. Perhaps due to this, Ares also gained an association with roosters—he’s certainly the good kind, if he is to be compared to a rooster.
Chickens were originally thought to have arrived in the Archaic era, aided by chickens being termed the “Persian bird.” Sacred roosters may have even appeared in temples, perhaps suggesting to us as modern polytheists to raise birds in devotion to the gods. They were not a common bird, coming in slowly from West Asia—with divine association, appearing on temples and later into Egypt in which they were connected to the pharaoh. Their ability to produce meat and eggs also made them far more convenient than pigs or cattle, along with consuming less resources. When the bird then reached the Minoans, it possibly gained martial connotations and appeared on Minoan seals.
Chickens in ancient Greece gained many associations—naturally with Helios, but also with childbirth, Selene and her lunar cycles, Apollon and Asklepios, as a chthonian being with Hermes and Persephone, and as a symbol of rebirth and transition.
THE MYTH OF ARES AND THE ROOSTER
There is also the story of Ares’ soldier and lover Alcetyron, who failed to guard the door to Ares and Aphrodite’s affair, allowing Helios to witness the couple:
“Mi. Why, to be sure, I have heard something like this before about a cock. It was the story of a young man called Alectryon; he was a lover of Ares,—used to join in his revels and junketings, and give him a hand in his love affairs. Whenever Ares went to pay a sly visit to Aphrodite, he used to take Alectryon with him, and as he was particularly afraid that Helios would see him, and tell Hephaestus, he would always leave Alectryon at the door, so that he might give him warning when the Helios was up. But one day Alectryon fell asleep, and unwittingly betrayed his trust; the consequence was that the Sun got a peep at the lovers, while Ares was having a comfortable nap, relying on Alectryon to tell him if any one came. Hephaestus heard of it, and caught them in that cage of his, which he had long had waiting for them. When Ares was released, he was so angry with Alectryon that he turned him into a cock, armour and all, as is shown by his crest; and that is what makes you cocks in such a hurry to crow at dawn, to let us know that the Sun is coming up presently; it is your way of apologizing to Ares, though crowing will not mend matters now.”
This story is then better explained by An Argument for a Bronze Age Introduction of the Cock in Ancient Greece by Jorrit M. Kelder:
Perhaps the bird served a double purpose, both as a symbol of ‘transition’ (including the various stages in the cycle of life) and virility. This double connotation may be reflected in the story of Alectryon, a companion of Ares, whose failure to warn his master (who was having an illicit affair with Aphrodite) of the arrival of Helios resulted in his transformation into a cock. The story, first attested in Lucian (Gallus 3), may well be a late one, designed to explain the name and manifold associations of the cock. None of these associations can with certainty be identified in Bronze Age Aegean iconography, though the presence of an altar on the Zakros sealing indicates that the bird could (also) serve some purpose in the religious sphere.
This dialogue continues on and the rooster reveals himself to be Pythagoras after thoroughly roasting the man he was speaking to.
ARES AS ROOSTER
Continuing on, paper I was reading explored slightly on the topic of gods as birds or bird-hybrids, such as Athene the owl, Hermes the chicken, and Ares the rooster:
Tumblr media
This likely represents Ares the fighting rooster—a symbol of virtuality, and extended to his son Eros with eroticism and ancient Greek homosexuality.  Cockfighting was a common sport in ancient Greece, likened with ‘masculine’ prowess in sports and even appearing on Panathenaic amphorae.
Admittedly, I found this most comedic and wonderful. I’m not completely sure what to do with this information beyond associating Ares with roosters, but it is a fun tidbit on him indeed. Roosters and chickens overall have a vast lore behind them, whether that is with the sun or as a symbol of death. Today, chickens are such a common aspect of life—we can simply go out and buy some eggs and chicken meat. However, two thousand years ago, I could imagine someone being beyond excited to finally be able to have a chicken in their life. From this small research spree for Ares, I have gained a new appreciation for chickens. Perhaps that is the blessing that he has given us in being a divine cock.

As you are someone who has extensive knowledge of ancient mythology I must ask, who would your favourite muppet play in a muppet rendition of the Illiad and, seeing as you've posted alot of Egyptian mythology recently, what Egyptian god is your fav most like?
Oh my gods, a muppet version of the Iliad? My goodness. I'm torn between all the gods being played by muppets and all the leaders of the armies being played by muppets except for Achilles and Patroclus.
I think the best solution might actually be... okay. Kermit plays Menelaus and Miss Piggy plays Helen. Animal plays Diomedes, Gonzo plays Greater Ajax and the chicken is Lesser Ajax. The gods are all muppets but they're new muppets and all voiced by very serious actors. Paris is played by a human man that Miss Piggy Helen beats up regularly. idk who Fozzie Bear would play but he has to be there somewhere. Maybe he's Agamemnon. Maybe he gets to just be the worst for a while.

Helen of Sparta is cool af and some of y'all have media literacy that's piss on the poor >:(
There is so much victim-blaming bullshit surrounding her and it makes me so mad. I'm probably not even coherent in this and it's very late but whatever. Helen is an extremely complex figure and we will never truly understand what goes on inside her head all the time but some things do not change no matter what interpretation you like. Understand that by the time of the Iliad, Helen is NOT HAPPY IN TROY. She is literally forced to stay there by Aphrodite.
There's something strange with how people often see her as JUST "helpless" or JUST "manipulative". As if she cannot be both the puppet and the puppeteer. With the puppet part, I don't think people truly get that you basically can't do shit when gods/immortals are involved.
Even stranger how the idea of her choosing to go is used to either "girlboss" her or condemn her based on who you're talking to. And still victim blaming happening from both sides!!!
"Since she didn't just leave, she was actually happy there! It was her choice 😌 Feminist Icon!" for the "girlbossers" VS. "Since she didn't just leave, she was actually happy there! It was her choice😡 Why is crying now when she ran away with Paris in the first place?"
Okay, first off...You are literally CHOOSING the interpretation that has her go by choice as the abduction of Helen is unclear. Some say the whole "Aphrodite made her go" does not make it clear whether "love made her go" or if the actual goddess made her go.
But by the time of the Iliad that doesn't matter! By then she clearly doesn't love Paris anymore if that is the interpretation that you hold so dear. If it was her choice, do you think it's "deserved" that she is suffering the way she is? She cries, she argues with a goddess, she hates herself. This should NOT be seen as "consequences of your actions". This is not something small like "forgetting to put the chicken in the sink to dethaw so later in the day you can't have it for dinner" and you learn your lesson. Fuck off for thinking it's her "just desserts".
"Well, when Paris died, why didn't she just leave then? Aphrodite only made a promise to Paris, not to Deiphobus."
These epics are lost and vague. We'll never get big details. Troy was destined to fall and well, the fighting technically could've stopped as soon as Helen went home. But even then, put yourself in Helen's shoes for a moment.
The man you've been trapped with is finally dead. You're finally "free"...but you've been here for nearly a decade. You've seen babies become children, children become teens. While many blame you, there are people you care about here...Your husband is just over the wall...but does he still care for you? Does he hate you? You don't know what your fate would be either way...You'd probably become numb. You want to go home but what would that mean if you actually DID return? It is easier to stay with the familiar. You see the wooden horse, you know trickery when you see it. You see the familiar faces for the past decade and know that this means their death. You tap on the sides. The wood creaks. You know how their wives sound like. Some were your family after all. You hear nothing and so you go inside knowing everything is about to change.
I almost feel like people forget that she's a PERSON. I don't think many people would be doing so well with the stress she's been under!!! Idk. I thought I was going somewhere with this and maybe this is something but I'm done :D

Herderism (or herding animals) is the core of our society, which we're not taught. It took me 25 years to even figure out that our society is organized around herding animals...In what is today Iraq about 10,000 years ago, people started to own animals as property for food, right? That's called herding. That was the last revolution that our culture ever went through. It changed everything. Very gradually over thousands of years, animals were reduced from being respected and honored and mysterious cohabitants of the earth with us to being property, just enslaved. We just owned them. Animals were reduced to that and also led to, for the very first time, a wealthy elite class, a class of people that was above everybody else...There was never any kings before animal agriculture. And they were wealthy and powerful because they had capital. There was never capital before (capita is the Old Latin word that means "head." Head as in head of sheep and goats and cows). So, this ownership of livestock was wealth and it started capitalism, basically. And eventually it led to war. There had never been war, but once you own animals and you have a lot of them, then there's a desire to get more animals, right? So, animals were wealth. The oldest word for war on planet Earth is gayvia, which means the desire for more cows. So, a king would attack another king to get more wealth, more livestock, more capital. And it would be a bloody, huge, terrible war. Whoever lost the war, the animals would become the property of the victor. So they would get wealthy. But also it led to slavery, because whoever lost the war, the people would become the property of the victor. So now, we have the beginning of slavery because, and this is something important to understand, whatever we do to animals, sooner or later, we've done it to each other. So, from owning animals, it's a small step to owning other human beings. And unfortunately today, we have a lot of slavery, still, we have a lot of trafficking and a lot of slavery (probably more than ever in history). And then we have also the domination of women, basically, because, you know, animal agriculture is based on breeding animals. So, reducing the female to merely a breeder. And so, by the time the historic period emerged about 3,000 years ago, (I used to teach college courses in some of the ancient books like The Epic of Gilgamesh, The Iliad, The Odyssey, The Old Testament writings), you can see women are just bought and sold like cows and pigs and chickens and sheep and goats, as chattel property. And then that led also to boys having to become hard and tough and capable of violence. That was the role model that boys had to emulate...men who are capable of violence against women and animals and rival herders. So this whole thing led to a lot of violence and a whole and unending history of war and domination of the weak by the strong. - Dr. Will Tuttle

KINKTOBER ‘22 - Training
Day 19: Edging with Iliad (my oc for The Arcana!)
{WC: ~250} {dom!top!reader x bottom!sub!Iliad, edging, another one I would like to expand into a full fic someday}
She was incredibly stoic, poised, and refined. She walked with her head held high, almost always holding her spear. Many assumed, simply by her demeanor, her scars, her occupation as a mercenary, that Iliad was cruel. Everywhere she walked, people would whisper, and she would glare at them, silencing them with her stark, scrutinizing gaze.
To many, Iliad seemed like she was all sharp edges, a walking weapon.
  But you knew her better.
Deep down, all Iliad ever wanted was to be babied. To be cuddled. To be held. Not that she’d ever admit it, she’d sooner take a life than she’d verbalize her desire to be dominated.
“Nn- ah,” Iliad gasped, suppressing her groans as best she could. She shifted, burying her face into your chest as you stroked her cock. “I-I’m g-gonna cum soon,” she warned, humping into your hands.
You started to pick up speed, but then…
Iliad placed her hand on yours.
  “W-wait, I…”
  You paused, slowing down.
  “I… I want… I want to try edging.”
She waited for your response, but you didn’t. You wanted to make her verbalize her wants, if you suggested something she’d “chicken out” and go with your suggestion. So you waited patiently.
“I had… I was reading this book, and there was a scene in it… of that. I… I want to try it, I’d like to see… what it’s like for myself.”
“…as you wish,” you cooed, kissing her nose. “But you tell me if it gets too much, alright? You may not last long the first time, it takes training.”
  “Then I want to train.”

Talking about my classmates (see the post below), we're trying to write the script for a school thing* and it's so dam(n) funny.
Like, it's a retelling of what happens before the Iliad, and it's so fucking funny. I'm gonna share some of them because yes.
Girl: "Rega**, have you heard? That chicken of Helen cheated on that rich dude of Menelaus with Paris!"
Girl: It's a 9, but his weak spot is the heel AnotherGirl: And Patroclus!
*moment of silence* All of the girls: For me, he's gay
Telemachus (hey, that's me!): OHY OLD MAN
*La Notte del Classico. It's a thing where my type of school does some things, if you want to know more, I'll explain better
**Short form for "ragazzi", it's usually used by teens. In this context it's used instead of "ragazze", the feminine version of ragazzi.

golly thats a lot! okay lets get cracking! these all apply to camilla btw
what sort of music would they like? have you thought about what genres or bands do they lean towards? do they have a favorite song?
classical but generally anything she can shmove to
weapon of choice? any particular reason they chose their weapon?
camilla generally does things hand to hand
how crafty/resourceful are they?
shes not the most resourceful person in the world but she can definitely get herself out of a pinch with what she has
how do they typically dress? does their wardrobe lean more towards practicality or aesthetics?
lots of dark colors and tighter fits. shes not one for flowy dresses or pastels
how do they wear their hair? do they care a lot how their hair looks?
generally she just lets it stay down but she will do the occasional ponytail for utility
do they have a nickname? who gave it to them? if it's not derived from their real name, what's the story behind it?
raine and eda used to call her milla wafer. like nilla wafer. she thought it was so dumb but it was funny enough that it stuck
favorite food? least favorite? are they a picky eater? do they have any dietary restrictions?
shes a hearty soup enjoyer for sure. she can spend days making the perfect chicken noodle or beef stew. she tries to always go out of her way to raise her own animals for slaughter so she can ensure that theyre always well cared for and fully utilized instead of contributing to overproduction and cruelty. some people cant stomach the fact that she does this
what do they have in common with you? how are they different? would you get along with them?
shes very determined at the expense of her own health. shes a lot more level headed than i am though. i think id get along with her well enough.
what languages do they speak? how fluently?
various fantasy languages but also ancient greek because i made a stupid joke about her performing the iliad of homer at karaoke while raine backed on the violin
their opinion on lying, stealing, and killing?
they have a time and a place but it would take A LOT to get her to take someones life with her own hands
are they quick to anger? what sets them off?
shes usually pretty in tune with her emotions and doesnt snap but threatening the people she cares about is a pretty quick way to get subdued at the gentlest
if applicable, can they drive? if they have their own, what color is their vehicle? is the inside neat and tidy, or a mess?
camilla drives a 1997 toyota corolla with like half of the factory white paint still on it. it smells like french fry grease inside
their favorite place to be?
anywhere where she feels welcome
how would you describe their voice? can they sing?
shes not going to be selling out concerts or anything but her voice is soothing enough when she needs to deal with certain kids who have trouble sleeping
do they have any creative hobbies? (art, writing, music, etc)
she sews all of her own clothes!
how do they show that they care about someone? how do they express that they don't like someone?
when camilla cares about someone she COOKS. food is important to her. i imagine she just nods along politely if she isnt really vibing with someone. shes not one to be openly venomous
are they associated with any particular element (air, earth, fire, water)?
space
do they smell like anything notable?
... spoilers
how would your character describe themselves? it doesn't have to line up with how they really are.
she would probably say shes 'serviceable'
do they ever return home?
she doesnt consider it home anymore

Poetry Book (Shijing): One of the World's Oldest Anthologies of Poetry - As Old as the Iliad (Essay)

おおばこ、とれとれ つまどって入れよ おおばこ、とれとれ 裾(すそ)はさんで入れよ
 (46P-47P)
This is a poem recorded in the Shijing, one of the world's oldest collections of poetry from ancient China. Here, Plantain is an edible and medicinal wildflower that is often seen in Japan, Is different from European and American plantains. This poem seems to be modern poetry, but it is believed to have been completed around 770 BC. (There is also a theory that Confucius compiled it, but it seems to be different. Confucius who was active around 500 BC is completely different in age.) It is a collection of lyrical poems. Around the same time, Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey" were completed in Greece. This is a heroic epic.
There are 305 extant poems, each consisting of four kanji characters per line (one unit), and the format is different from Gogonzekku and Gogenritsushi. The number of lines is arbitrary. It is also characterized by many kanji such as 兮. (to adjust the tone)
In the past, it was called "Mao Shi", but after the Song Dynasty, it was called "Shijing".
As for the contents, there are many love songs, and the next poem is a lively depiction of a wife, who is waiting for the return of her beloved husband who has gone to the battlefield, filled with her pity,as follows:
@My husband in the battlefield
You have gone out to the battlefield
I don't know the day when you come back
I don't know the day when you come back
Chickens return to their roosts
Sunset from the field
cows and sheep come home
You have gone out to the battlefield
should be worried
You have gone out to the battlefield
You can't go back today or yesterday
when will we meet again
the chicken returns to its roost
Sunset from the field
cows and sheep come home
You have gone out to the battlefield
Avoid hunger and thirst
(70P-71P)
 (70P-71P )
The Referenced book was "Appreciation of Poetry" (Yoshihiro Murayama: Nigensha) (2005 first edition: 1300 yen).
Word of the day: The human emotions do not change even if the times change. I think that old poetry is rather full of modern tastes. The sorrow of a wife who sends her beloved husband to the battlefield is still the same, and the rhythmic feeling of "Plantain" can be used as modern poetry.

Favourite Painter: I was thinking about this question and kind of coming to a ‘what sort of art am I drawn to’ and it’s honestly this list:
Janainaart
Journal.Away
@minuiko
Oh and Monet. I just love the soft soft colours.
Favourite Poet/Writer: I was so so into the WWI poets canon in my early teenage years - Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon mostly and now I am so so behind on my poetry reading - I’d love recs for Persian/Persian Jewish/Jewish poets. My favourite writers are honestly, Tolkien. It’s Tolkien. Also love Leigh Bardugo as a recent thing. Tamora Pierce as well. I read a lot of my Serious Classics as a kid/young teenager and I will forever think The Iliad and The Odyssey are both incredible amazing things.
Favourite Singer: I love so many - Maureen Nehedar, Maisie Peters and Olivia Rodrigo, Vienna Teng, Karliene Reynolds, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Tori Amos.
Favourite Band: I was looking at my most listened to because I’m not really a band person so much as a singer/songs person but I’ve loved a lot of Amazing Devil and Florence and The Machine songs so there’s that.
Favourite Meal And Drink: Meal is hard but listen, there’s something about a really good Cheese Plate Dinner - you get amazing fresh bread, cheese, fruit, some smoked chicken or smoked salmon and maybe some dips and salad/veggies and NOM. I also made a variation on Persian Chicken with Shiraz Salad and I am still thinking about how delicious it was. Drink is definitely tea (usually English Breakfast with milk/sugar but I’m very fond of Jasmine tea as well as mint/camomile) or water but I love Faloodeh Seeb (basically shredded apple and rosewater syrup over ice).
Favourite Outfit Aesthetic/Style: I have described my style as ‘soft princess cottage core but make it biracial and jewish’ and that’s honestly pretty accurate. I basically live in dresses. My favourite outfit is a beautiful pink linen dress with a flower crown - I feel like a princess and it’s so so beautiful and affirming for me. Some vibes below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Favourite Item You Own: I love my iPad very much. I can do so much with it and it’s so portable and I think I’ll have to find a way to replace it when it does eventually stop working because it’s been so good to have for so many reasons. The other favourite item is probably my chai (hebrew for life/live) pendant that a very dear friend gifted from her trip to Venice - it’s extremely personally meaningful.
Favourite Perfume: so I don’t really wear perfume because asthma but I love jasmine, rose and lavender as scents (for a while I did have a gorgeous lotus blossom/lily scent from The Body Shop that I wore a tiny amount of but I haven’t been able to find an asthma friendly perfume sadly).
Tagging - any one who wants to <3.
