Shrek 2 (2004)
Tumblr media
If there's a kind of movie that's rarer than a good sequel, it's a good sequel to a comedy. That alone makes Shrek 2 noteworthy. Better looking and funnier than the first, this follow-up is a must-see.
Newlyweds Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) return from their honeymoon to find an invitation from Fiona’s parents, who live in the kingdom of Far Far Away. As Shrek predicted, King Harold (John Cleese) and Queen Lillian (Julie Andrews) are shocked by their green-skinned son-in-law and their daughter’s appearance as an ogress. With the Fairy Godmother (Jennifer Saunders) under the assumption that her son, Prince Charming (Rupert Everett), would be marrying Fiona and King Harold none too pleased with the situation, an assassin (Antonio Banderas) is sent to deal with Shrek and his friend Donkey (Eddie Murphy).
Visually, Shrek 2 blows Shrek out of the water. It's a little shocking, actually. The human characters, in particular, look much better but it's more than just that. Peel your eyes away from the foreground and you’ll see many subtle jokes thrown in the background: funny book titles, posters on the walls, and more. There’s always something on-screen to keep you laughing.
Over and over, Shrek 2 displays perfect comedic timing. A joke will lead into another and then come back with a snap that catches you off-guard. There are so many great, quotable, memorable moments you’d be tempted to list them all but then you’d be simply writing a synopsis of the whole movie. These are not cheap, throwaway gags either. They tell you about the relationship between Shrek, Donkey, Fiona and her parents. They serve double duty by advancing the story and the same can be said about the songs. The soundtrack is no mere collection of top-10 hits; they have been carefully selected to establish the mood, make you laugh and emphasize what you see on-screen. You can feel and hear the enthusiasm the cast and crew had for Shrek 2 in every frame.
It's now time to address the film’s one flaw: the pop culture references. Spider-Man, The Fellowship of the Ring, Alien, The Wizard of Oz, Garfield, Cops… the list goes on. Some will say it gives this great film a limited shelf life. Let me counter with this: from the beginning, Shrek has been built on comedic references. Did the first picture explain who Robin Hood was? Did we pause to clarify why there were three blind mice, or a wolf dressed up in ladies’ pajamas? Anyone unfamiliar with the Grimm Brothers’ fairy tales will see dozens of jokes fly over their heads. Why criticize the film for having a mix of winks to old and new stories? The gags are still funny whether you get every aspect of them or not and they come so quickly that it doesn't even matter. Alternatively, if you don’t get the Zorro reference, go watch The Mask of Zorro!
Shrek is so good, so funny and full of so many good moments you almost don’t want to say Shrek 2 is even better. You feel as though saying you like this sequel more than the first will diminish the success of the first. Let’s just say they’re both the best. It’s a perfect choice for the whole family and with time, you only grow to appreciate it more. (On Blu-ray, March 22, 2019)

Just curious. How bad has Biden been at controlling COVID-19 in your view?
First: I already responded to a similar question you left on this post.
Second: Biden has been atrocious for COVID-19 safety and management. COVID-19 is still killing people, and our president has done a horribly insufficient job in mitigating that. "Better than the Republicans" is not the same thing as "good" or "effective." Biden's abysmal reaction to COVID-19 is part of why I'm so thrilled that the Uncommitted campaign for the Democratic primary has achieved some success. That particular campaign is focused on ceasefire in Palestine, but the People's CDC explained in a statement how Palestine is also very much a public health issue. We need to scare the bastard and actually do some of that "pushing him left" that people claimed they'd do after getting him elected. Though it seems to me like a lot of people just settled for, "okay, we got rid of Trump, we don't have to worry anymore."
Third: While I'm at it, people have to do more than vote. You have got to get involved. You have got to do more than participate in the presidential election once every four years. Join a union (may I recommend the IWW?), follow the guidance of The People's CDC, volunteer for your local Food Not Bombs, get involved in a tenants union like the Autonomous Tenants Union Network, read Riot Medicine, get trained in first aid and get involved in a street medic group, read up on your local politics and get involved on the small-scale, do something in addition to voting in the presidential election. Even if you're limited in how much you can personally participate, find the people who are talking about these issues and signal boost them, and share the information with others who may be more able to participate more. If you can tell people to go vote in the presidential election, you can also tell them to go do other things, too.
Now, with all of that out of the way, here are some links related to Biden's abysmal COVID-19 response:
During his 2020 campaign, Biden promised immediate $2K stimulus checks. Instead, he delivered $1,400. Sources: [x] [x] [x] [x] [x]
Velena Jones for NBC Bay Area: "‘Too expensive': Bay Area residents shocked over new COVID vaccine prices"
Reuters: "COVID vaccine manufacturers set list price between $120-$130 per dose"
Joseph Choi for The Hill: "Free COVID-19 test program to be suspended for now"
Disability activist Alice Wong writing for TeenVogue: "Covid Isn't Going Anywhere. Masking Up Could Save My Life," and the follow-up article, "COVID and the 2024 Election: What Biden and Democrats Owe High-Risk People."
Laura Weiss writing for The New Republic: "Democrats Can't Keep Ignoring Covid in 2024."
David Cohen and Adam Cancryn for Politico: "Biden on '60 Minutes': 'The Pandemic is Over.'"
Alex Skopic for Current Affairs: "COVID-19 is Still a Threat. So is Biden’s CDC."
Adam Cancryn for Politico: "Biden Appears to be Over Covid Protocols."
Paul Thornton for the Los Angeles Times: "Covid Still Rages, and the Biden Administration Isn't Helping."
Eric J. Topol for the Los Angeles Times: "The U.S. is facing the biggest COVID wave since Omicron. Why are we still playing make-believe?"
We should have free, universal testing. We should have free, universal vaccination. We should have free, universal treatment. We should have financial assistance for those of us who can't work outside the home. We should have mandated work-from-home for any job that can be done remotely. We should be emptying prisons and paying attention to the way disease and abuse proliferate inside their walls. We should have COVID-19 safety PSAs and government support for universal masking. We should have free distribution of N95s. We should have mandated masking in medical settings and public spaces. We should have a higher minimum wage. We should have healthcare reforms. We should have strong worker protections. We should have improved infrastructure. We should have a president who gives a single flying fuck about how many of us are dying.
And we have none of it.
But we sure seem to have money to keep dropping bombs, arming cops, terrorizing the vulnerable, and imprisoning innocent people to use for slave labor.

not to be insane but do you have any readings about religious bdsm or things w those vibes? ily <3
hi yes i do! i just finished writing a thesis about this actually
Jeffrey J. Kripal, Roads of Excess, Palaces of Wisdom: Eroticism and Reflexivity in the Study of Mysticism. (University of Chicago Press, Chicago: 2001) + Jeffrey Kripal, Kali’s Child: The Mystical and Erotic in the Life and Teachings of Ramakrishna, (University of Chicago Press, Chicago: 1996) + kali's child is not about christianity but it is a fantastic work on eroticism and religion from the hindu perspective (however kripal is white and was trained as a priest, so bear that in mind)
Carter Heyward. Touching Our Strength: The Erotic as Power and the Love of God. (Harper & Row, 2009)
Jeremy Carrette, "Intense Exchange: Sadomasochism, Theology and the Politics of Late Capitalism." Theology and Sexuality, vol. 11, no. 1 (April 2005), pp. 11-30
Joseph Rogers, "Do Not Despise the Discipline of the Almighty: God as Leather Daddy and Reading Job through Althaus-Reid." Religions, vol. 8, no. 10.
Robert E. Shore-Goss, "Queer incarnational bedfellows" in Contemporary Theological Approaches to Sexuality (Routledge, New York: 2017) + all of robert shore-goss's work in general (he was the acting chaplain at avatar, the largest gay leather club in los angeles, for a number of years, and previously trained to be a priest- i adore him and his work)
Susannah Cornwall, "The future of sexuality debates in the Church: shared challenges and opportunities for theological ‘traditionalists’ and ‘revisionists’," Modern Believing vol. 62, no. 1 (January 2021) + cornwall has written extensively about intersex people in theology, i highly recommend her scholarship
Marcella Althaus-Reid, Indecent Theology: Theological Perversions in Sex, Gender and Politics. (Routledge, New York: 2000 + this might be my favourite book on this list and i recommend it to everyone, althaus-reid is an extraordinary thinker and her work in general is worth looking into
Margot Weiss, Techniques of Pleasure: BDSM and the Circuits of Sexuality. Duke University Press (London, 2011) is a book i recommend to anyone who is interested in or exploring bdsm, its a great starter book though not explicitly religious
Georges Bataille, Erotism: Death and Sensuality. Translated by Mary Dalwood. (City Lights Books, San Francisco: 1986) + bataille in general is a great philosopher, i also recommend Guilty trans. Bruce Boone
When Did We See You Naked? Jesus as a Victim of Sexual Abuse, ed. Jayme R. Reaves, David Tombs, and Rocío Figùeroa (SCM Press, London: 2021) + david tombs is a forerunner in reading the crucifixion as sexual abuse, approaching it from the methodological viewpoint of human rights abuses in latin america. this isn't about bdsm, but it is about sexuality in theology and it provides an incredibly necessary counterpoint to any discussion of power dynamics.
i'm missing a few titles but i'll look through my library and add them when i can.
edit: bolded my favourites, also heyward is the only book that to my knowledge is not available on zlib or annas-archive.

SONG OF THE WEEK: “What a Wonderful World.” I started performing this song after hearing Israel Kamakawiwo'ole do it in the film FINDING FORRESTER (which moved me to tears). It’s one of those tunes that doesn’t wear out, no matter who does it or how they re-arrange it, and it plays well when I perform it in assisted living homes. The song was written by Bob Thiele (as "George Douglas") and George David Weiss. It was first recorded by Louis Armstrong and released in 1967 as a single. Weiss crafted the song specifically for Armstrong, as Weiss was inspired by Armstrong's ability to bring people together, regardless of race, class, etc.
This track is from my collection of cover songs I recorded—highlights from the set I play in assisted living homes around the San Francisco Bay Area. For some time, I've been providing music for people in various stages of dementia and disability. I've seen miraculous things happen while singing to people who are considered to be "disconnected"--suddenly, they're singing, clapping, tapping, dancing...all because of these familiar tunes. You can help me to continue this work--When you download this this track (click on link below), you have the option of paying any amount you can swing. All support is mightily appreciated and helps to underwrite my expenses for providing music in these homes. Thank you for tuning in!

The prelims for Jacket 4 will come in two waves after the winner’s bonus poll ends on Sunday, so get your votes in there.
