“Oh, thank God,” said Tony, “Bruce is here.” All the other green, angry looking people were secondary, as far as he was concerned. Having the Hulk on hand meant that he didn’t have to play Jonah again. That had been. Unpleasant.

A dart of red broke off the crowd of ghosts and angled towards Tony. Valerie Gray. And Bruce, too. As Bruce.

“Where do you want us?” shouted Valerie.

“Take your pick!” shouted Tony, even as he lined up more shots. He was going to be running out of all but the special anti-ghost ordinance soon. “But—Bruce, you’re going to have to suit up.”

“Of course,” said Bruce, rubbing his face. “Yeah. Okay. You would call it that. Miss Gray, if you could take me up towards one of those… big things…” He gestured vaguely at the space whales.

“Cool!” said Tony, giving them a thumbs up. “Now, all we need to do is get a shield around the portals, and we can roll up the streets. No problem!”

“Sir,” said Jarvis. “You may want to look at the Ops Center.”

What was going on now? He turned and watched the shield around the airship flicker once, twice, and then go out completely. The chitauri, who apparently were smart enough to smell blood in the water, regardless of any other tactical deficiencies, changed direction.

“Well, that’s not good. Anyone want to fill me in on what’s going wrong?”

“Well,” started Jasmine Fenton.

“What happened to the thing being self-sustaining?” demanded Natasha as she punched out another mercenary. Where had Loki even found these guys? They weren’t even mind controlled. Who in their right mind signed up to fight for the aliens in a literal alien invasion?

“Listen,” said Maddie Fenton, a little testily, “we quite literally built it on the fly. It isn’t operating at peak theoretical efficiency, but it’s a testament to Jack’s engineering skills that we got it to work at all, much less while also trying to come up with a workable solution for the shields. Be glad we have enough power to keep the portal open, even.”

“Forget the shields,” interrupted Tucker, his voice crackling slightly. The Fentons’ communicators weren’t bad, and apparently they worked through the ‘spectral noise’ associated with ghosts, but they left something to be desired in comparison to the crystal-clear communications Natasha had gotten used to while working for SHIELD. “Well, no, don’t forget them, forget them, we might still be able to—I’ve got— What’s your name again, dude? —I’ve got Selvig up here, and he says that if we can get Loki’s staff, we can shut down his portal.”

“Great!” shouted Steve. “Anyone have eyes on Loki?”

The answer to that was, of course, a resounding no.

“Oi, Tucker, you want to run by that thought you had about the shields again?”

Under other circumstances, Tucker might have been over the moon. Tony Stark, asking him about something technical! It was like a dream come true!

But between the mind control, the alien invasion, and whatever was going on with SHIELD and HYDRA, Tucker’s enthusiasm for anything was pretty much nil. So.

“Uh,” said Tucker. He and Selvig were standing in front of Loki’s portal device. Well. Tucker was sort of crouching, and Selvig was… sprawled. That couldn’t be a good position for a guy that old, but whatever. “So, Loki got the startup power for this thing from the, uh, the tower’s arc reactor, right? So, it’s still plugged in. The connection is live, and it looks like he used standard connectors. Not, you know, a twelve-gauge extension cord, but Earth-made. I think maybe we can use it to charge up the shields and use one here as the centerpiece – the power source – instead of the one in the Ops Center. If it’s, like compatible. Is that a thing we can do? Mrs. Fenton?”

“Well, it isn’t impossible,”she said. “But those portable shield relays – they weren’t made as independent shield generators, and for them to run on something other than ectoplasm – Jack, sweetie, do we still have those blueprints? – Thanks. Alright, Tucker, you’ll have to make significant adjustments to the shield relay, probably even cannibalize one of them. Are you able to do that?”

“Well,” said Tucker. “Maybe? I’ve got a lipstick laser and…” He looked over his shoulder. “Selvig. Sort of. But if it’s anything more complicated than rewiring the Speeder’s main gun to fire from the backseat window console, I’m going to need a bunch of tools and a science guy who isn’t dead on his feet. No offense.”

Selvig waved him off.

“You’re the one who—? Never mind. It is more complicated. Quite a bit more complicated.”

“I’ll also need, you know, the generators. Relays?”

“I’m still on my way,” said Romanov. She sounded… upset.

“And so am I,” said Iron Man. “Kid, I’ve got all sorts of tools in my apartment. And dummy, too.”

Okay. Cool. Also, what did dummies have to do with anything? Was that rich people code for something?

“Okay, want to give me directions, or am I supposed to just start pulling out drawers?”

“Hey! Where’re you going?”

“You need more cover,” said Sam. “This is what I have the jetpack for, remember? Arrow boy isn’t going to get all of them, and they do have ranged weapons.”

It was true, one well-aimed shot through the Ops Center envelope could send the whole thing down. They weren’t using hydrogen gas, of course, but an ectoplasm-nitrogen mix, so there was no danger of becoming Hindenburg Mk II, unless the aliens’ energy weapons reacted really badly with ectoplasm, but there hadn’t been any evidence of that yet, so…

Anyway, it didn’t matter. Jazz was too busy keeping the Ops Center and the portal steady to do much else.

“Be careful,” she said.

“Can’t make any promises!”

Fury was having a bad day. A really, monumentally, bad day. One that was part of an already awful week but still managed to go above and beyond in terms of how completely awful it was.

Primarily, he blamed HYDRA. They were very easy to blame and were, in his opinion, responsible for at least seventy percent of the metric ton of crap he was currently wading through.

But then, then he got a call.

The call.

Which meant that he had to take this boat riddled with snakes to fight off an alien invasion over New York. Peachy.

If ever he’d been tempted to give old friends a call… But he wouldn’t. Not yet.

“Sir,” said Coulson, joining him smoothly as he walked down the hallway toward the main bridge.

“What’d you find?”

“We have problems, sir. Using the head start we were given, I’ve found no less than seventy problem areas on this ship… and some indications that the World Security Council may have similar issues. We also have to assume there are unseen variables at play.”

Fury did not miss a step. Benefit of being a cynical bastard. The WSC was a shock, and a disaster on multiple levels, but the other number was… livable. “Are there any particular personnel involved in these problems?”

“STRIKE teams seem to have an unusually high number of incidents. Upwards of ninety percent.”

Fury strode onto the bridge. “Tell the STRIKE teams to prepare to mobilize and pilots to scramble.” Uriah gambits were unpleasant… but if he could kill two birds with one stone, he would, and he wouldn’t feel bad about it. “What kind of air power are we looking at?”

“Significant,” said a comm. tech who was flipping through different news programs. “They seem to have biologically based technology of some kind, weaponry is mainly energy-based, propulsion… unclear.”

Wonderful. Fury scanned the other screens, trying to get a better picture of what, exactly, was happening in New York. What tactics the enemy was using, what numbers they had, what resistance had been put up so far and by whom.

“Sir,” said Agent Hill. “The council is on.”

The council. The same one Coulson had just told him was infiltrated by HYDRA. The same one that would probably find a way to make their present situation all the more untenable and Fury’s day infinitely worse.

It was a pity he couldn’t ignore them.

“Put them on.”

Pandora hissed at the sting of the enemies’ weapons. They were not ectoblasts, no, but there was the taste of something like magic to them, and energy was energy. Still, they were not enough to damage her unduly, although they might prove troublesome, dangerously so, for the weaker ghosts of their force.

But that was the nature of war. Few battles were won without bloodshed.

Her warriors should otherwise be a match for the chitauri. The chitauri had numbers, doubtlessly, but her warriors had experience. And once Frostbite and Dorathea lead their forces onto the battlefield, well… She could not estimate the number of enemies. She had been told that they came from the stars, and those lands were numerous to the point of being innumerable. Even so, there was a limit to passage through a choke point, and even the stars themselves may not turn things in the favor of a commander caught in one, no matter their numbers.

But the ghosts, too, must pass through a portal. Pandora eyed the slight waver in the portal’s outline with disfavor. She was no expert in such matters, but many years of existence had given her some intuition for how portals should behave. This one was stable enough, but not for long.

All the more reason to resolve things quickly.

“Hunter,” she said.

“What?” snapped the mechanical man, the burnished plates of his armor flashing in the Sun.

“Your task. Find Phantom. Free him from whatever compulsion he is under.” Although Phantom still had much to learn, he was undeniably powerful. Returning him to his proper allegiance would

Skulker looked away from the beast he was dismembering with some reluctance. “Fine. Dog. Come here.”

The dog ignored him. As it was Phantom’s, and Skulker hadn’t made the effort to learn its name, that was really no surprise. Still, Skulker gestured at it. It, in turn, bounded away, yipping.

“Are you, or are you not, the greatest hunter in the Infinite Realms? Find him with or without the dog.”

Skulker grumbled but flew off. Good.

Pandora manifested a joint in her neck just long enough to crack it and drummed her fingers on the lid of her box. It had been too long, far too long, since she had engaged in a proper battle against evil, and the more vicious of the leviathans flying through the air looked like they would, at least, give her a challenge.

Thor had become more open-minded since his short stay on Earth, with Dr. Selvig, Darcy, and… Dr. Jane Foster. Truly. But he had to admit, these ghosts were unnerving. Too similar by far to the draugr that had ofttimes haunted the stories of bards – the ones that made his father glare and try to shoo away both Thor and Loki.

He had to find his brother. Soon. With all that had happened, with how, exactly, Loki had behaved, he believed, truly believed Daniel Fenton’s assertion Loki was being controlled, somehow.

It was a foul thing, to put such a geas on a prince of Asgard… Although, to be fair, putting a geas on anyone was foul. It just seemed especially foul to Thor, that someone should do it to his brother.

Loki had, perhaps, never been quite so good as one might hope, but he had always been… himself, as vague as that description was. Even when he’d been consumed by madness, letting jotnar into Asgard, sending the Destroyer after people on Earth, he had still been himself.

Thor did not like this new version of Loki, who was very much… It was like seeing his brother through a warped pane of glass, or in a reflection. In fact, he liked it so little that he couldn’t even enjoy the utter destruction he was wrecking on the chitauri, lightning, head-crushing, and all. Not that he had been enjoying combat quite as much as he once did in general.

The price of being worthy, he presumed.

Alas.

A bright green flying dog whipped past him at speed, heading towards the tower. He narrowed his eyes at it. Most of the ghosts had stayed concentrated around the portals. What cause had this one to stray?

But he could not go investigate. He could still hear the screams of the civilians cornered in the buildings nearby. He would not leave them to fend for themselves until he had cleared this street.

Danny and Loki would both have preferred to use the elevators. Unfortunately, significant parts of the main upper elevator shaft had been repurposed for extension-cable-from-hell-powering-up-a-doomsday-device purposes, and no one wanted to mess with that, and the military-type guys they still had with them recommended shutting them off from a tactical perspective of ‘there’s more of them then there are of us, and we don’t want to guard them all.’ So. No elevators.

Danny could have just dropped them through the floor instead, but Loki seemed concerned about the effect serially dropping through floors had on Danny.

Or, well, the effect that the effect it had on Danny was having on him, in any case.

“I refuse to get stuck in a ceiling again. I am a god. I am to be treated with some degree of gravitas.”

“It was one time. You should’ve seen what I was like when I first got my powers.”

“And how long ago was that?”

“Year and a half ago, about.”

Anyway, they were taking the stairs. Danny wasn’t really upset about it, because it gave him more time to be annoying. Right now, he was in the midst of a recital of all the ‘annoying younger sibling’ noises he had ever made. Right now, he was working on ‘long drawn out sighs,’ which had really been a hit with Jazz, when he’d been eight. Which was to say, she hated them. A lot.

And Loki didn’t seem to a have a lot of tolerance, either.

“What,” he snapped, “are you doing?”

“Nothing,” said Danny, enjoying the way Loki’s face pinched up, as if he were searching for a way to order him to stop without really screwing up his other orders…

… speaking of which, could Danny have interpreted ‘get me out of here’ to mean ‘get me out of New York?’ Maybe. But at this point, there were plenty of reasons to want them both in New York, including--

Danny’s train of thought derailed as he noticed the sound of footsteps echoing up the stairwell. He looked down and then threw himself backwards as a redheaded woman – Romanov – brought a gun to bear on him. She fired, twice, in quick succession. Wow. Rude. And pretty brutal, too, but then again, New York was being invaded by aliens. And she knew about his powers.

(Hecking Fury, telling people about his powers.)

Although, considering trajectories… no, he was too sleep deprived to consider trajectories.

He grabbed Loki’s arm, intending to drop them through the floor.

“No, wait,” said Loki. “Let’s see what the Widow wants.” There was a malicious, almost cruel, edge to his voice, but there was a hollowness underneath it. He did want to see why Black Widow, Natasha Romanov, was here, but the tone, the phrasing, was just to rile her up.

Or to appear as if he wanted to rile her up. Danny hadn’t listened to all the things Barton and Loki had discussed – too busy freaking out about the whole situation vis a vis mind control and alien invasions – but he hadn’t gotten the impression she was all that easy to rile up.

But Danny had his orders. And he still had to defend Loki. Ice began to spread out from under his feet. It was a bit sluggish, but it would give him the terrain advantage as far as maneuvers went. The Widow kicked open the door on her landing and rolled out, into the floor beyond, staying more or less out of direct line of fire for both Danny and Loki.

“I have eyes on Loki,” she said, out loud.

“Crap,” said Tony, tossing the box to the Foley kid. “Sorry, got to go, but hey!” He was already heading for the edge of the roof. “Maybe we won’t even need that if we do this right!”

Black Widow definitely been looking for them, which wasn’t surprising, but what was she carrying? The bag was bulky and angular. A weapon? If so, why hadn’t she used it?

Loki stepped out past Danny but stayed well within Danny’s ability to grab – or drop through the floor, if necessary. Making the floor intangible instead was a valid strategy.

“What is it you want, Widow? Natasha Romanov?”

Romanov, meanwhile, had disappeared, almost as thoroughly as Danny could. He tilted his head to one side, listening. This floor, it seemed, had been imagined as semi-open lab space. There were long work benches, empty places for equipment, some kind of robotic arm in the ceiling, and a cart full of plastic-wrapped computers, monitors and towers together.

It was kind of cool. There were a lot of places to hide.

“Is this… revenge? For Barton?” Loki’s smile was sharp. “He told me much about you, and I suppose Stark mentioned avenging this place.” Two false images split off from Loki to prowl among the lab tables. “It suits you better than it does him. But don’t you think it somewhat… hypocritical?”

“Okay, Romanov, here’s how it is. Loki likes illusions? Let’s give him an illusion.”

Danny saw a flash of red out of the corner of his eye and angled himself to intercept, but no attack came.

“After all… you’ve done so much… so much that others would be more than justified retaliating for, don’t you think? All those regime changes, shall we call them? And Barton’s no better, really.” He hummed. “The things you two did together. Drakov’s daughter? Sāo Paulo? The hospital fire? And you think taking vengeance on me will change anything? You think it will make you some sort of hero? Give you peace? When you—”

One of the doors flew open, revealing Iron Man. Who plowed through one fake Loki (Faki? Fauki? Fauxki? Meh, he’d workshop it.) and swerved to shoot one of his repulsors at another. Romanov popped up from behind a table and threw something at the feet of the real Loki, who crushed it with his heel, ignoring the sparks of electricity that flew up off of it.

Danny batted Romanov back with a shield, straight into the cart of computers, which fell down on her. Ouch. But she’d be able to get back up and into the fight. The important thing was that, right now, she wasn’t an immediate threat, which meant he could ignore her.

Give her time.

If she hadn’t wanted something, she would have run, kept hiding. Just these few minutes – She was a shield agent, sure, but she had to have some kind of specialty in—

Anti-ghost missiles were a lot harder to avoid in such a small place, especially when distracted. Danny hissed as one impacted his shoulder and splattered green all over his shirt, but he caught the next, and threw it back at Iron Man. He tried to phase off the green goo, but it wouldn’t go. It had to be some of that phase-proof stuff his parents had been working on. Nasty stuff.

Although, he had to be grateful it had only given him a bruise and hadn’t been mixed with something that would melt him. It gave him hope for his future relationship with his parents.

In the meantime, it definitely limited his options regarding protecting Loki and just removing themselves from the situation without getting into more destructive behavior.

He hoped Iron Man knew what he was doing… for everyone’s sake.

The missile exploded right in front of Iron Man’s mask, splattering him with green goo. Danny had no idea what kind of sensor array he had, but that would probably buy at least a little time as he adjusted it to compensate for the eye-holes of his mask being covered up.

He turned back to Loki, only to see another Iron Man grab the staff from him.

Only for that Loki and that staff to dissolve into the air.

Loki, the real Loki, stopped being invisible and laughed. “Oh, that was good, that was very good.” Not only was this Loki real, his smile might have been as well. “But you didn’t think you could fool me, did you?”

Danny flicked invisible, noting with disfavor that the green goo stayed visible when he did so, and moved closer to Loki, fending off attacks. Two Iron Men – Where did the second person come from? Was it Barton, in a suit? Someone else entirely? The War Machine person? Danny couldn’t remember his name. – and Romanov together was a bit of a challenge for Danny to keep track of, given his present mental state.

Luckily, however, one of the two suits, the first one, didn’t seem to have nearly the tactical awareness of the other. He’d say it was Stark in the second suit, the fresher-looking one… the one without any form of ghost proofing Danny could detect.

Danny swiped an intangible arm through the suit, cleaving through delicate wires as he did so, but leaving warm, human flesh untouched. Several pieces of armor fell away, revealing a band t-shirt, but not the whole thing. Interesting.

Romanov threw a Fenton Ghost Zapper at him. Loki knocked it out of the air, the sharp end of the scepter cutting it in two as he did so. Iron Man – the one he was pretty sure was Tony Stark – tried to grab it again, even as Loki pivoted to try and catch Black Widow with it. Danny used that as a pretext to pull Loki back, away from Black Widow. They did not need her under control. Nope.

But… they wanted the staff. They wanted the staff now.

Selvig must have gotten knocked free. He must have told them, one of them, about his safeguards.

If one of these three could get the staff, get back to the top of the tower… Then it would be over. They’d have won.

“Director Fury, the council has made a decision.”

Fury flexed his fingers behind his back. “I recognize the council has made a decision, but given that it's a stupid ass decision, I've elected to ignore it.” It’s what he’d say if he hadn’t learned what he’d just learned. If HYDRA wasn’t threaded through every element of SHIELD like a deadly parasite. If this sounded more like a simple fear-driven overreaction and less like a way to destroy one of HYDRAs most famous enemies and his new and very powerful allies?

“Director, despite your shocking negligence, bordering on dereliction, you’re closer than any of our subs. You scramble that jet—”

“That is the island of Manhattan, councilman.” Although considering that HYDRA, in the person of Red Skull, had tried to blow it up in the past, he wasn’t sure that would sway them. Until I’m certain my team can’t hold them—”

“There are two armies of alien origin, emerging from portals above that island. If we don’t—”

“I will not order a nuclear strike against a civilian population, much less the densest population in the United States. And the other army is an ally.”

“Based on what intelligence? Based on what invitation? That of someone already suborned by Loki?”

“If we don’t hold them in the air,” added another councilmember, “we lose. We lose everything.”

“If I send that bird out, we already have.”

“Director Fury is no longer in command. Override order, seven, alpha, eleven.”

“Sorry, sir,” said the pilot, who had just taken his seat. He watched with some trepidation as Agent Coulson led a pair of his colleagues away. This was all very irregular. “I’m not familiar with that code.”

There was a pause. “What’s your name, son?”

Cujo frolicked through the city. It was loud, yes, but nothing he hadn’t been in training for while alive, and nothing he hadn’t experienced while dead. So, a non-issue, obviously.

The actual issue? His person had just thrown a stick. Obviously, Cujo had to go fetch it.

okay so i just finished ouat for the first time ever (watched it years ago but stopped in s5b) and i just wanted to ask one question about the finale lmao

(discussions of r*pe, the r*pists on the show, the erasure of graham, and regina's crimes)

first. some context. i absolutely hate what happened to graham's character (being r*ped and then murdered by his r*pist and then the crime never ever ever ever being acknowledged) and it's really really hard for me to like regina's character after that. for the longest time i always told myself it was the writers that didn't actually understand what they were writing, and then once they did, they tried to ignore it and sweep it under the rug because that wasn't their intention for regina's character

for example, with the other two r*pists on the show (there's arguments for a lot more, but these ones are confirmed in the canon), zelena and mother gothel are both treated as villains (regina actually calls zelena out for the r*pe, telling her she 'deceived robin in the most vile way possible,' which is another reason i thought the writers were trying to kinda retcon what regina did to graham once they realized what they had actually written). zelena eventually does get her 'redemption' (kinda. the only person who ever treats her well is regina. we just stop seeing zelena with other characters. the only exceptions really in s7 are wish!killian, robyn, and chad and they all don't know about her true crimes), which is something i hate, but again, zelena and mother gothel (for the majority of their characters) are treated as villains, which is genuinely why i thought for over a decade now that the writers realized they made an oopsie with regina and graham and just ignored it

however. then i watch the season 7 finale

and regina's getting crowned the good queen which. okay. interesting take i guess (love or hate regina's character, she burned down entire villages, who the hell is voting for her???). and then regina, the good queen, supposedly forgiven and redeemed for all her past evil deeds, gets to give a speech. in fact, the last speech that's ever given on ouat, the last words ever spoken on the show is this speech

she starts off by saying: 'i thought my story came to an end a long time ago, and then new people came into my life... people who gave me a second chance. i can't wait to see what's in store for me next. well, for everyone'

and then with this speech, as it continues, there's a lovely little montage to give us a reminder of the journey that was ouat and all of the characters along the way

regina says: 'i refuse to believe there won't be more adventures' and we see the jolly roger, charming on horseback, rumple in the heroes and villains au on horseback (interesting choice), grumpy being hatched, jiminy cricket, pinnochio and gepetto being swallowed by a whale, regina casting the dark curse over snow and charming's dying body (.......), emma freeing merlin from the tree, elsa using magic, ursula and maleficent tussling, monkey!walsh, rumple being bitch slapped by a bear, belle being attacked by fire-doggie!phillip, snow hitting charming with a rock, and cruella's stank breath

these are all, so far, decent choices. some are a little iffy but, for the most part, just moments reminding us of everything that's happened

and then regina says 'more love' and we see outlaw queen, snowing, swan believer, phillip and aurora, rumbelle, henry and violet, cinderella and her guy (shawn?), jasmine and aladdin, snowing again

this one's a little more questionable (just like. where is captain swan? and why is swan believer here when everything else is romantic love? did someone mix it up? idk. not the point but still)

'more family' and we see snowing and baby emma, emma and baby henry, the heroes in s2 walking together, snowing and neal, gepetto and pinnochio, henry smiling, and the last supper ouat version

this one's fine. i think including gepetto and pinnochio there is kinda funny when it could be replaced by any other scene of the actual main family (regina and henry maybe???????????????)

and then. finally. why i am making this textpost

regina says 'and yes, there will be more loss'

and. okay. we see robin dying, robin's funeral, regina at her father's grave, and then ???????????????????????????? for SOME REASON they show GRAHAM DYING????????????????????????????????

and at this point i don't care what else they show because regina's then saying 'because that's just a part of life' and i am just wondering. HOW. after SEVEN SEASON. did ouat think that was a good idea

and it genuinely makes me feel nauseous because yes, he is a forgotten victim, he was controlled and r*ped and murdered and nobody ever found out about it and, in fact, he is rarely ever even remembered (emma wearing his shoelace was such a fucking blessing to know at least ONE PERSON cared about him after he had died. that he at least wasn't forgotten by her) but for YEARS i thought it was just ouat being ouat and trying to ignore their mistakes because addressing them would make regina truly unforgiveable

but then. regina. in her final act of being truly redeemed, switched completely from the evil queen to the good queen, her crimes being forgiven by her victims and everyone electing her to be queen (WERE THERE NO OTHER CANDIDATES?), regina reminds us of the crime that she never ever told anyone about, the crime that she will be taking to her grave, and we see graham dying (because she r*ped and then murdered him)

and it just feels so so so wrong. ESPECIALLY. especially. ESPECIALLY after season seven, where we're forced to watch rogers be taunted by his r*pist, the knowledge of her crime being unknown to him (she taunts wish!killian too when he does know), and that entire plot is sickening and heartbreaking but that's what it's supposed to be. like one of the biggest plots of the season was about a r*pist taunting her victim and destroying his life and making him miserable and being the cause of his death (gothel poisoned wish!killian's heart, regina crushed graham's, wow ouat sure does love their parallels). never once are we expected to be on gothel's side and literally everyone on the show hates her besides characters she is also manipulating (ivy and anastasia). so how are they going to have that be one of the main plots of the season (if not the main plot, considering it's why rumple dies and killian/alice/gothel have the most backstory eps out of any other plotline) and then do this?

how are they going to give regina her redemption and then remind us of graham's death, arguably one of her worst crimes that is kept secret from everyone on the show? she took his heart and then commanded him to her bed chamber and then created a curse where they had a sexual relationship despite graham being miserable every single day and never wanting or feeling anything because oh yeah she stole his heart and controls him. and then she killed him when she couldn't control him any longer

and now she's the good queen, getting her second chance? ('second' chance. okay ouat. sure)

how are they going to forgive regina for her crimes while reminding us, the audience, that nobody even knows about graham?

“Are you ready for your present?” Taeyong called, from the other side of the door.

“Yes!” you exclaimed.

“Okay, birthday girl, come in!”

Your boyfriend Taeyong was sprawled out on the bed, surrounded by brightly coloured balloons. “It’s me! I’m the present,” he said, grinning widely.

You smiled. “I got that, thanks.”

Taeyong beckoned you to the bed. “Use me and abuse me, my queen. You can be the boss tonight.”

You bit your lip, gripping Taeyong’s shirt. “You know I love your body, but…” you slumped down onto the mattress. “Work was hard, and I’m so bloated today. A kid on the subway thought I was a whale. I mean, I can’t blame him, I’m like a million months pregnant.”

“I’m sorry, honey,” Taeyong sighed. He rubbed your tummy in gentle circles, sending small sparks shooting across your skin.

“The worst thing is, I can’t even drink on my birthday!” You said. “But at least I have an excuse to eat for two. Alright! Time for some cake!” You looked at your boyfriend expectedly.

“About that…” Taeyong said, “There’s no cake. I’m sorry. Remember how the OBGYN said you need to watch your weight?”

Your eyes went wide in shock. “No cake!?”

“Who wants a cake when you have a vegan, gluten-free birthday flan… oh who am I kidding, it’s awful.” Taeyong pouted. “It tastes like cardboard. Sorry… I got hungry in the car, so I ate some.”

You lay down and shut your eyes, sighing dramatically. “I hate being pregnant,” you moaned. “I wanna go back to when I was hot and tight. Like that spring break where I nailed the entire NYU baseball team. That was fun.” You giggled.

Taeyong shook his head, chucking. “Actually, as your boyfriend, I’d rather we didn’t reminisce?” He took your hand and kissed your palm softly. “I think you’re hot and tight right now. You’re carrying my son, what’s hotter than that?”

You gave him a small smile. “That’s sweet, Yong. But I don’t feel sexy at all.”

Taeyong licked his lips, his near-black eyes raking down your frame. “How about I make you feel sexy? As your boyfriend, that is my main job, after all.”

You rubbed your hands together excitedly. “What did you have in mind?”

Taeyong touched his lips, thinking. “A movie?”

Your shoulders slumped. “Not in the mood.”

Taeyong slid closer to you and placed his hand on your thigh. “How about a massage?”

You smiled, watching how his fingers grazed the hem of your skirt. “Warmer…”

Taeyong’s brown eyes lit up. “A candle lit bubble bath?”

You shivered with delight. “Even warmer.”

Taeyong’s lips curved into a smirk. “We’ll use that jasmine bath bomb, and…” he leaned in towards your ear. “I’ll even get in with you.”

You gasped. “That’s it! You’re on fire, baby!”

Taeyong cheered. He held your face and pressed his mouth onto yours, kissing you intensely.

He pulled away too soon, leaving you chasing his lips. He chuckled.

“Wait right here.” Taeyong jumped up and ran off into the bathroom.

You sighed contentedly. “That’s my man.”

Yet Another Kingdom Hearts Revisit, Part V

This playthrough has been a blow to my pretensions of having a good memory. I'd completely forgotten that King Triton isn't the only good Disney character from outside Disney Castle who knows something about Keyblades and Keyholes. It makes perfect sense for the Genie to have some insight into them, but I really like that he knows less than Triton does. It's better for pacing reasons that he doesn't, but it also fits his character - I can't imagine that a magical being who spends so much time contemplating mid-20th century American pop culture while stuck in his lamp would keep his ancient legends straight.

Of all the Disney worlds in the series that try to condense their source films into the game, KH I's Agrabah is the most successful IMO. It's really the only level in the game that did so. Olympus Coliseum, Halloweentown, Monstro, and Neverland feature original stories, and Wonderland, Deep Jungle, and Atlantica use only pieces of their films (to greater and lesser degrees) in their stories. Agrabah has almost all the major elements of Aladdin in it: Aladdin's street rat origins, Jasmine's escape from the palace (albeit under entirely different circumstances) and her love affair with Aladdin, Jafar's scheming to take over Agrabah, the quest for the lamp in the Cave of Wonders, Genie's comedy, his freedom, and the three wishes. Even "Prince Ali" gets worked in. The only thing left out from the film is the finale where Aladdin and Jasmine get together.

Why it works here compared to later worlds in the series is that, despite using so much of the film, all of those elements are re-contextualized to fit the time frame that KH I had to work with and, more importantly, were modified to fit the needs of KH I's larger story. There's no room to fit the "Prince Ali" element proper into the plot, and if the attempt had been made, it would've been an abridged version lacking the comedic texture that makes it work in the movie, and it would have distracted from Sora's story and the plot of the League of Disney Villains. It was much better to make that a brief mention and have the three wishes applied to the battle with the Heartless.

And speaking of battling Heartless - Aladdin's in my Top 3 for Disney world battle partners in the entire series. The dude rocks. And Jafar makes for one of the more challenging two-part bosses in the game. Kurt Zisa is, for my money, the most difficult secret boss in the game, Sephiroth very much included. And that's (usually) a good thing! I like having to shift between physical and magical strategies, and I like that he's a boss that let you get good value out of the Summons (sadly, I wasn't able to duplicate my last playthrough, where I beat him with multiple Summons instead of just Tinkerbell and dumb luck at dodging his vertical spin after she bought me a free life).

Part of me wonders if Monstro and Agrabah shouldn't have been reversed in order. On the one hand, Riku nabbing Jasmine makes for a good shock and a sense of foreboding; the player knows how far gone he is at that point, but Sora doesn't. But why does Riku need the quest for the seven princesses explained at the end of Monstro when he's already captured one of them?

And I might as well cover Monstro in this post, as I don't have too much to say about him. This is one world where I agree with the complaints about KH I's platforming. I appreciate that the bowels of a space-whale should be a claustrophobic place, but the chambers are too small and too packed with crap to make the concept work in an enjoyably challenging way. Instead, it's just tedious.

Storywise, however, Monstro is a great turning point for Sora and Riku. Taking a cute Disney character hostage might be an easy way to sell moral decline, but it's so much more effective than three minutes of lore gibber-gabber by one-note pricks in black coats. And whichever executives at Square and Disney are responsible for giving the final OK to these games' plots should have made the staff re-watch this scene ahead of every scripting session since KH I. The first game as a whole works against later characterizations of Responsible Riku being the one to clean up after lazy, do-as-he-pleases Sora, but that scene and this world demonstrate most clearly how big a retcon that change was.

Top of the Top:

Born a Crime was probably my favourite non ficition, and most of that probably is due to Trevor Noah's narration skills. It was very entertaining and heartfelt.

Less uplifting but just as gripping in a different way was Empire of Pain. Excellent book that went deep into the why and what and hows of Purdue Pharma. Anger inducing.

Lazarus Heist is great and available as a podcast. The book is more or less the podcast word for word.

Fictionwise: I read Trust at the start of the year and it was a bit soon to declare as favourite of the year, but it's stil made the final cut. Just very imaginative and intriguing. Just my kind of MetaFiction. Clever without being cleverclever.

Demon Copperhead I read right off the back of Empire of Pain so maybe that coloured my experience. I've not read any Dickens so loads of references no doubt flew past me, but the language was acrobatic and zingy. I loved it.

Wrapped up the year on a high with North Woods. That was so unexpected and entertaining. Again with the playful language, memorable characters and a unique approach to tying all the various stories together. One that sticks in the mind and makes the writer in me wonder how I can replicate his style (with my own personal twist of course.)

SOZED anon, fantasy au stuff

Whenever I think of fantasy au, I dont like to use the common fantasy stuff like unicorns and that so some of these are just random ones that i merged with already existing ones and mixed acouple more things into it

I see Dave as a big cat type of centaur, but it explodes from the spots on its back when under stress. I dont think hed be able to speak english, but hed be able to understand it. I think he would communicate in a series of httyd dragon like grunts n that, sometimes purring and meows

I see Shawn as an octopus thingy, he can camoflauge (taken from the whole cake baker hiding in the tree bark thing) he has multiple arms that he hides and only brings out for good use. He can talk and breathe underwater and can communicate with underwater animals. He can speak english but he can also talk in bubbling "oOoooOo" type noises

I think Jasmine would be some sort of reptilian beast, but shes really kind. I think shed be quite bony and look slightly unhuman, giving her an intimidating look ("I struggle with making friends too, most people think im intimidating") I see her with spines down her back and it ends in a tail. Giving her a fade-to-black version of Dakotazoid, minus the hair her hair stays the same. She can talk english but she can talk in growls and grunts, so she can semi-understand Dave.

Ella is definietly some sort of deer cross a owl. She has wider eyes and shes covered in fur from the back of her neck to her wrists and ankles. The bare skin places are her face, neck and stomach. Her legs are deer legs and her fur also has feathers underneath, her hair also having feathers prodding out from under it all. she has wings but they are quite small so she cant fly for long. She can speak english and in multiple squawks and hoots.

Sky is some sort of air monster, but she isnt evil. She has small white horns that jut from her head and more horns along her jaw. She can float and control the air, but only for a sort amount of time. She has spikes on her shoulders, knees, back of her shins and elbows. Also giving her a type of Dakotazoid look. She can speak english but its broken up, and she can talk in a bunch of bellows like a whales and musical notes like a bird.

Dislike: Regina, Blue

Hate: Jekyll, The Evil Queen, Gideon

Season rating: 4/10

I kind of didn’t like this season. I did not like Regina blaming Zelena for Robin’s death, Rumbelle being broken up, or the whole Gideon plot. There were some good moments but mostly me being frustrated. I did kind of like the land of untold stories plot line though.

GJ and ZZH Updates — May 15-21

This is part of a weekly series collecting updates from and relating to Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan.

This post is not wholly comprehensive and is intended as an overview, links provided lead to further details. Dates are in accordance with China Standard Time, the organization is chronological. My own biases on some things are reflected here. Anything I include that is not concretely known is indicated as such, and you’re welcome to do your own research and draw your own conclusions as you see fit. A glossary of names and terms often used can be found [here]. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or additions. :)

05-15 → Kangshifu Jasmine Tea posted another promo image for their “micro-movie” with Gong Jun that released on 05-20. The caption is the same as the previous promos with the addition, “I like you every day, I want to be a braver me.”

05-16 → Kangshifu posted another photo ad of Gong Jun along with a catalogue of fan merch that would be available with their products on 05-20.

→ MUJOSH posted a short clip of blue sand art to promote their Gong Jun gift box. Fan Observation: The shape of the sand falling looks like a whale tail falling apart, a symbol that Xie Yihua’s brand has been heavily using.

05-17 → Honor posted a teaser commercial featuring Gong Jun(’s hands) for the commercial later released on 05-20. Caption: “Is it another expression of the heart, or another arrival of surprise? Who is the one who opened the box of this mysterious gift?”

→ There’s an unconfirmed rumor that Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan were seen together in Beijing, Chaoyang district (the district where the precinct that accepted Zhang Zhehan’s case is.) Part of the rumor is that photos were taken, but were willingly handed over after Gong Jun talked to the photographers. The description of what Gong Jun was wearing partially matches the paprazzi pictures taken the following morning.

→ MCT released amendments to their entertainment managers guidelines, including disallowing “performance industry groups” (read: CAPA) from issueing entertainer licenses. Manager licenses as well must now be overseen by the government. [translation source]

05-18 → @yukiko-moriarty, an AI research consultant, posted her process and findings from analyzing the 05-04 Instagram video using a program she developed, which shows results consistent with deepfake control samples. The sources and code for reproducing the test can be found [here].

→ Honor posted a photo ad of Gong Jun announcing the launch of their new model. (1129 kadian) This was reposted by Gong Jun’s studio Weibo with a caption that includes, “Old friends reunite again to welcome new surprises!”

→ Kangshifu posted a video teaser of their ad that later released on 05-20. Caption: “A wisp of fragrance, two kinds of romance, a confession @ Gong Jun Simon broke the dimension as two roles. ... Witness the love that is not of your kind.” (mtl) They later posted an image from the ad, caption: “Where is the super cute Momo?” [subbed video] Fan Observation: The actress who played the love interest looks remarkably similar to Zhang Zhehan. One of the drawings of her used in the video appears to have literally been traced from a picture of him. [video overlay] [video overlay]

→ Safeguard posted a commercial featuring Gong Jun to their Douyin. Fan Observation: The bathtub of blue and white balls is very similar to a commercial Zhang Zhehan did for Nivea last year.

→ 加入百胜 posted a video promo for KFC spoken by Gong Jun.

→ Sephora posted a video promo for Fresh spoken by Gong Jun. [subbed video]

05-19 → A new promotional image featuring Gong Jun was released for his upcoming drama Legend of AnLe. The drama was included in a post Youku made for 520.

The drama’s Weibo also later made a post showing some of the set design. Caption: “Live up to your heart, you will get everything you want, the world will be peaceful and happy, and the prosperous world will be peaceful. I hope that those who love and be loved will be able to fulfill their wishes ✌” (mtl)

→ #GongJun trended on Twitter.

→ Gong Jun posted a douyin of himself doing a little dance. Caption: “Show off!!!” [Here] is the original dance, the video is from 03-12. Fan Observation: The pose he holds at the beginning looks like the nakama pose that Zhang Zhehan had them both do at the end of the concert, the same pose he also did in the Hello Saturday promo douyin on 03-18.

05-20 → Kangshifu released the micro-movie. Gong Jun later posted it on his personal and studio Weibos. The caption on his personal includes, “This fragrance of jasmine, I want to cherish it silently, and I want you to know it.” Fan Observation: The outfit the actress is wearing at the end looks familiar... 👀

→ Honor posted the full commercial they had previously teased promoting their new model and confirming Gong Jun as its spokesperson. A bunch of his other endorsements left comments congratulating him. [subbed video]

→ Legend of AnLe’s Weibo posted eight new stills featuring Gong Jun and the female lead Dilraba Dilmurat. Caption: “Clinging to each other in the morning and evening, when we go to Anle together, our hearts are connected, and this life is bright.” (mtl) Youku also posted two of these in profile format ten minutes later; this was reposted by the Legend of AnLe Weibo with the added caption, “There is no other person in the eyes, and all eyes are full of respect.” (mtl)

→ Rising With The Wind, Gong Jun’s other upcoming drama, posted two new promo images to their Weibo featuring him and the female lead Zhong Chuxi. An additional four stills were later posted.

→ 精彩OK posted a short video featuring Gong Jun wishing everyone a happy 520. [subbed video]

→ Gong Jun changed his Weibo pfp for the first time since 21-08-19. The photo is from a set he previously posted on 01-07. Fan Observation: We’re all hoping this means something is about to change for the better. “Open your coffins.”

→ #GongJun trended on Twitter shortly after the Kangshifu video was released, then again later when all these things started happening within minutes of each other.

→ Hsu Fu Chi posted four photo ads featuring Gong Jun. (They’re easier to see [here])

→ Colgate posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.

→ L’OFFICIEL magazine announced that Gong Jun will be on the double covers of their June issue, releasing 05-23. (1129 kadian) Caption: “Embrace nature in early summer, and shake hands with the future amid busyness and anticipation.” [purchase links] They also announced a double cover feature in L’OFFICIEL HOMMES, caption: “Facing the profession of acting, rather than saying his attitude is ‘naturally’ or ‘intended’ to change, @ 龚俊Simon thinks he is ‘growing up’. Besides his enthusiasm for creating characters, he has also grown into a person who empathizes with the story.” [quoted translations] Fan Observation: The photo used in the announcement was taken at Jinhai Lake, the same place as Gong Jun’s douyin the day before.

→ KFC posted a video for their anniversary featuring Gong Jun. They later posted two photo ads for 520 [here] and [here], and a video with a voiceover by Gong Jun about their child welfare program.

→ REAL1640 posted two previously unseen Word of Honor bts photos. Caption: “Giggling puppy.” (Thank you Real-ge, we love you 🙏)

→ Kangshifu posted another short video using extra footage from the micro-movie.

→ The Instagram posted six photos from last April. I’m not including the word salad caption because either my mtl is failing me completely or it’s nonsense, and frankly I don’t care.

→ Honor posted a short video spoken by Gong Jun wishing everyone a happy 520 and promoting their new model. [subbed video]

→ Charlotte Tilbury posted a short teaser for their new brand spokesperson (Gong Jun), to be officially announced on 05-26.

→ Zhang Su (Susu) made a post denying accusations that he was the person filmed for the 05-04 video, saying that he would not do something illegal that infringes on the rights of others, he does not have the technical knowhow or necessary clothing and materials (he doesn’t have a white shirt and a white wall?), and he is not a professional voice dubber. He does not deny it being a deepfake, nor ever mentions Zhang Zhehan. [translation] Fan Observation: This has now turned the spotlight back on him. Good job, buddy.

→ Gong Jun posted in his super topic: “Idols probably didn’t like drinking milk tea at the time."

05-21 → Bluebird made a thread about the Douyin account Zhang Zuole, where the Nogi Shrine photos originated from on 08-12. The account was wiped in April. There have been suspicions that Susu may be the one behind it, due in part to the personal nature of the things posted on it.

→ Two more previously unseen Word of Honor bts photos of Gong Jun were posted by the costume assistant who posted several last week. Caption: “A sassy little Valley Master. Is such a pretty Lao Wen the one who wants to kill Bai Wuchang in a while 🤔 ps: A little backlit, bad pixels, not good.” (mtl)

→ han__home, an old Instagram account of Zhang Zhehan’s, was deactivated. This was the account he used during the period when Susu was his assistant, and had the cherry blossom photos on it.

→ Honor made a post explaining the accessibility features on their products, which includes a graphic that shows a smart watch receiving a call from “麦哲” (“Mai Zhe”, the same Zhe as in Zhehan). The caption includes, “Glory will also continue to use warm technological power to break down barriers and move forward with love. This #521#, let love be 💗 barrier-free” (mtl) Fan Observation: This is a very small detail in a print ad. It could have very easily been edited out if there are real concerns about what was said in the Instagram video.

→ Gong Jun posted three selfies to his personal Weibo. Caption: “Learned a little ‘dance’.” Fan Observation: Fans believe these to have been taken in Qingdao during the filming of Legend of AnLe (last fall) based off what is visible in the background. Addition 07-30: First 浅.

→ #TheRealZhangZhehan trended on Twitter, an event currently in progress at the time of this post done in response to an observation that some of the recent photos put out by Xie Yihua seem to have photoshopped Zhang Zhehan’s facial structure to the point where it’s noticably different. There are fears that she’s doing this to try to prevent people from noticing if future deepfakes look off.
