starting off the sideblog, here's what my lineup for the Thunderbolts would be.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First off, a bit about the characters that are getting cut:
Overall, the existing Thunderbolts lineup is very uninteresting in terms of the characters powers, and that's a major reason for all three of the characters I cut, but there's also some more specific reasons.
Bucky: Why is Marvel putting him on this team? Why can't he just be in Cap 4? Being on the thunderbolts really makes no sense for the character at this point.
Taskmaster, Red Guardian: Way too much Black Widow (2021) representation with these three around. I have very little interest in either character, so... Toss them.
This leaves US Agent, Ghost, and Yelena Belova. I feel like all three characters are pretty solid, and while Yelena isn't necessarily bringing much to the team in terms of powers, she makes up with it with personality.
With all that in mind, the four additions to the roster:
Baron Zemo
Is he in this movie or not? I genuinely don't know. I don't think I have to explain this one, he's just a perfect fit.
Trish Walker, AKA Hellcat
Last seen locked up in the Raft, same as Zemo. it's an absolutely perfect setup. In terms of powers, she's got superhuman dexterity and reflexes, minor night vision, and potentially a little bit of super strength. Her getting out of the Raft in Thunderbolts could help set up her eventually reuniting with Jessica Jones in a later project.
Mary Walker
The mercenary for hire with DID last seen in the very underrated Iron Fist Season 2. I am gonna be very disappointed if the MCU never does anything with this character again, and I think Thunderbolts could be a good spot to throw her in. She doesn't have superpowers that we know of, just general mercenary skills. However, last we saw her, she had just discovered that she has a third alter, which could potentially have mutant abilities, if they wanted to go in that direction. Initially I was reluctant to have Mary, since we already have a completely unrelated character with the last name Walker, but then I remembered that US Agent is named John Walker, so at this point I think it's funny if we have a bunch of Walkers.
Mike Peterson AKA Deathlok
This one might be slightly confusing to some. I mean, if I'm saying Bucky isn't a fit, then how would the shockingly similar Mike Peterson be any better? Well, I have a bit of a devious idea for this: what I would do is make it seem like this is a rebooted, more villainous version of Deathlok, but the twist is that he's the same one from Agents of Shield, and Mike is actually spying on the Thunderbolts on behalf of Shield, to try and determine what Val's end goal in creating the Thunderbolts truly is.

Act: Prelude:
You are a kid at the golden apple park named Jessica (OC) with her friend Lucy Yi, Lucy is automatically let in on sight, as for Jessica, the greater stopped her, the greater was one of the mascots named "bo bo the clown".
As weirdly well kept as he looked with his pure white teeth and his almost ringmaster like mustache, he had a sense dread that was instilled within Jessica as he looked her up and down.
He grinned and gestured to her to give him her ticket but Jessica, going to point at Lucy realised that she was already out of view.
Bo Bo showed her the ticket as he placed it in her hand but as she was one step away from the gate, the clown pulled her away from the line with a smile on his face as he pulled her through the Forrest the prelude ends as it cuts to her missing poster...
Blowing in the wind.
Act: 1: intro
Nicky is sitting in his tree house with his corkboard with some missing posters pinned to a map of the town with pictures of the presumed abductions that once took place, the places seem to surround one house, 910 friendly court.
Nicky then looks at his neighbors house as he spots what seems to be his best friend, (Aaron Peterson) who had been missing for a month, being chased by his father (the neighbor) through the house before looking out a window, looking Nicky dead in the eyes as the neighbor pulls him away from the window and towards the basement.
Nicky leaves his tree house and then ends up in the tutorial. Think of the tutorial basically being the same as the one I Hello neighbor alpha 2.
Ending:
Nicky hears crying for behind a door in the basement, as he opens the door to reveal that in truth, it was not only a recording but Aaron was only a way to get Nicky into his basement as the neighbor tosses Nicky to the ground as he holds him down and-
Act:2:
You play as Aaron as he tries to get Nicky out the basement.
Ending: I mean, we've all played HN to know what happens.
Act 3:

I’m spending some time working more on identifying problem CC–did I mention that immediately after I got the Megakingdom running properly I simply had to download about 8000 more files of CC? Because that was completely necessary and some of them are definitely clashing and crashing, but like I really need those outfits and hairs and medieval tents and defaults and stuff. I… need them. This time, I sensibly segregated all the new CC into a folder of their own to test, and once I have eventually verified it all then I can sort it and bulk rename it and so on, but it’s still slow going with the 50/50 method, nothing else seems to catch everything. And something in that folder is not only bad, but actually causing the game to hang up on the loading screen, so that’s going to be fun ferreting out.
Anyway, I have been doing some other prep to amuse myself while working on this. First of all, I don’t know that I ever actually sat down and learned the DeBateau/Peterson backstory before–it doesn’t show very well in the game. I gathered that Jessica Peterson recently divorced Armand DeBateau, but not that he then adopted Tara. Not all premade backstories are going to fly in a medieval game, and I also don’t want to put in the effort to research and adapt all of them, but this one works surprisingly well. So in the Megakingdom, the story’s going to be that Jessica managed to marry a little too high for her station, but could not produce an heir. Maybe she’s infertile, maybe it’s just bad luck and/or a Henry VIII situation, whatever. The point is that she was so desperate to maintain her position, she obtained a baby and managed to fool Armand into thinking Tara was theirs. He loved his daughter, but still needed an heir; Jessica was caught when she attempted to do the same thing again (or, perhaps, when she attempted to get pregnant from another man to give him a child). Jessica was thrown out in disgrace, lost her position, and made to join the church to repent her sins, but Armand insisted on accepting Tara as his daughter. He still needs an heir, though–the law is sometimes lenient about daughters inheriting, but she is both female and adopted; that is unacceptable.
And I made the Ottomas family interesting somehow: I wrote up some hood and family bio descriptions as if the Megakingdom came packaged this way, and started describing Desiderata Valley as full of dangers in the deep dark woods, which led to me describing the Ottomas family as cursed. Just… they own the local hedge tavern, and there are rumors of a family curse that the children want to find a way to break. Especially Sharla for some reason. (The curse is ugliness, unfortunately, it cannot be broken but can, perhaps, be mitigated with careful breeding). We’ll see if they manage to remain interesting in play; in my experience they are always extremely obnoxious.
I also started coming up with some potential tavern names themed to each subhood, and I’m not totally satisfied with all of them, but the Pleasantview hedge tavern, owned by the Caliente sisters, in a pastoral region, is going to be named The Smoking Lamb. And I think the hedge tavern in Strangetown, owned by General Buzz Grunt, may be called The Craven Canary (...it’s a mining town. I like the name, but I do wonder if I should theme it a little more to the owner). The only other one I’m pretty sure about is Bluewater Village, which will be named either The Salty Mermaid or The Mermaid’s Maw, I haven’t decided.
Finally, I have been using my standard megahood spreadsheet to help me fill out all the Citizen Census information on my Megakingdom spreadsheet–stuff like Zodiac, hair color, and Aspiration. Then I decided to fill in everyone’s age–I’m using Hat’s Gestation-Based Aging which really flattens the variety when you start with premades. All the toddlers are 1, all the children are 4 or 5, most of the teens are 12-13 and the few who aren’t are 14-15, the adults are all in their 20s and the elders are all in their 50s. It’s fiiiiiiiine, it’ll even out when I actually play and they start aging and having babies. Anyway, I finished that, and then proceeded to calculate everybody’s birthdate based on the sim calendar and their ages in days. It can feel a little brain-breaking to think about because there are both years for sim aging (4 days) and calendar years (20 days), but it’s fine. It’s just a funky calendar like Discworld. I could give seasonal years a different name like cycles or something, but I don’t want to so here we are. The starting date is now Summer 5, 1001. Previously I was calling it Year 1, but 1001 works well for that medieval flavor and for letting sims have birthdates. It is damn hard to calculate, at least for one rusty at math, but I hope it’ll be nice flavor that’s worth it in the end. After all, who wouldn’t want to know that Mortimer Goth is 205 days old (51.25 aging years) and was born Spring 5, 991?

Bad Timing (Adam Park x reader)
Masterlist
TITLE: Bad Timing (Adam Park x reader)
Prompt/summary:  (MMPR Season 2 episode 29, Goldar’s Vice Versa) Reader is the team's stand-in medic and is trying to ask Adam to the Vice-Versa dance. Lord Zedd has other plans.
Word Count: 2,276
Warnings:  none
Tumblr media
“It’s about time the girls had to ask the guys to the dance,” Rocky said leading the boys to a table at Earnie’s juice bar.
“Who are you going with?” Billy asked.
Rocky smiled and leaned back in his chair, “Jessica Peterson, I can’t believe she asked me. What about you Adam?”
Adam sighed, “I don’t think I’m going…”
“Why not?” His friends asked.
“No one’s asked me yet, and I don’t think anyone’s going to,” the boy said.
“Don’t feel bad Adam, no one’s invited me yet either,” Billy said.
Adam gave a sad smile, feeling a little bit better that he wasn’t alone in his struggle. But just as Billy said that, Laura Scottsman approached the boys table asking to speak to Billy alone. Adam leaned his head into his hand watching the blue ranger walk off only to return with a smile on his face, “Hey guys, Laura just asked me to the dance!”
“Atta boy!” Rocky said high-fiving Billy.
“Looks like I’m the only one without a date, even Bulk and Skull are going if those weird girls ever catch them,” Adam sighed.
“Don’t worry Adam, someone will ask you,” Rocky tried to console his friend.
“I gotta get going, later guys,” Adam said standing up and walking off.
His friends shared a sigh. (Y/n) watched Adam leave and hurriedly approached the two boys remaining at the table.
“Hey guys,” (Y/n) said, the boys looked up and smiled, “Where’d Adam go?”
“I’m not sure, he’s been bummed out that no one’s asked him to the dance,” Rocky said.
Billy smirked at the youngest member of the team, “Why haven’t you asked him yet (Y/n)? Everyone knows you want to.”
“Oh I hope not everyone,” (Y/n) sighed while pulling out a chair to sit down.
“Everyone on the team at least, I think Aisha has made it her mission to try and set you two up,” Rocky chuckled.
(Y/n) blushed, “I was actually gonna ask you guys to help me think of an idea to ask him to be my date…”
The two boys smiled before Rocky said, “You don’t need anything fancy (Y/n), just ask him outright and he’ll say yes.”
“You don’t know that!”
“Yes we do! He’s had a crush on you since you started helping Alpha out in the power chamber,” Billy said.
“Last time I patched him up after a fight he wouldn’t even look at me, or talk to me.”
“Adam’s just a shy guy, you’ll figure it out (Y/n),” Rocky said.
“I sure hope so, anyways I’m gonna go find Aisha. She might be able to help.”
(Y/n) stood up with a sigh and went to track down the yellow ranger.
_______________________________
Kim, Adam, and Aisha sat at Earnie’s the next afternoon. Aisha had spent all of their first period trying to convince (Y/n) to shoot her shot with the handsome black ranger. Eventually Aisha resorted to telling Adam Sarah Diaz might ask him if he shows up to Volleyball practice, all while (Y/n) stood next to her and listened. It broke (Y/n)’s heart at how hopeful Adam looked after Aisha told him, and (Y/n) decided that it was gonna be that day she asked him.
So here they sat at the juice bar. Aisha kept her eye on the door waiting for their team medic to show up with the poster they had made.
“Lord Zedd has the worst timing ever,” Kim groaned.
“Tell me about it. It’s too late now, Sarah’s probably gonna ask someone else,” Adam said.
“Oh Adam don’t give up, I heard from a little birdie that there’s someone else planning on asking you,” Aisha smiled.
“You mean (Y/n)? They better do it soon before Sarah gets to him first,” Kim laughed.
Adam blushed at the mention of their friend, they were the first person Adam wanted to ask him but after he saw them with Aisha yesterday he wasn’t sure at all if they were even interested.
“You guys I gotta go, catch you later,” Kim said, grabbing her bag. The other two rangers waved as she walked out.
Cheers were heard from the main floor of the gym, grabbing both the rangers attention, “Hey what’s going on over there?”
“Let’s check it out,” Adam said.
They both stood up and walked over to see a girl practicing karate. Adam watched in awe. Her black hair shone under the lights of the gym, and her suit was crisp and clean. Her kicks were swift and graceful, she finished her routine and the crowd clapped for her. She grabbed a bag off the floor and walked up the steps towards the teens.
“Hey,” the girl said, “do you mind if I join you? I’m new in school and I don’t know many people yet.”
“Sure, I’m Adam and this is Aisha,” Adam smiled.
Aisha held out her hand for the girl to shake but she shoved her bag into her and grabbed Adam’s instead causing Aisha to scoff.
“I’m Sabrina, it’s nice to meet you Adam,” she smiled, “I heard you’re one of the best martial artists at Angel Grove High, maybe you could show me a few moves?”
Aisha’s eyes widened as she saw (Y/n) walk in. After looking around (Y/n) spotted Adam and began to walk over.
“Sure,” Adam said. He and Sabrina began to walk away, leaving Aisha still holding her bag.
“Hey!” she yelled as she tossed the bag back to the new girl who only smirked in response. The pair walked down the steps and right past (Y/n) causing them to look confusedly at them and back at Aisha.
“Who is that?” they asked.
“I really don’t know, but she seemed only interested in Adam.”
(Y/n)’s eyes began to water and Aisha put her hand on her friends shoulder, “Let’s see if we can still use that poster.”
Adam practiced with Sabrina for over an hour and a half. Aisha and (Y/n) sat at the juice bar, the poster tucked away in Aisha’s bag for later. Sabrina finally grabbed her stuff to leave and the two walked up to Adam on the matts. The boy couldn’t wipe the smile off his face and (Y/n) felt a sting in their chest.
“Oh Adam!” Aisha said in a sing-song voice, waving her hand in his face, “Reality to Adam!”
“She’s great isn't she?” he said after he pulled his eyes away from where Sabrina had just left.
“I’m not so sure about her,” Aisha said.
“Come on, give her a chance,” Adam said, “(Y/n), tell her.”
(Y/n) took a deep breath in when they heard their name from the boy, “Yeah let’s just give her a chance Aisha. As long as she makes Adam happy.”
Aisha looked sadly at (Y/n). Adam broke the silence, “Why don’t you guys come hiking with us tomorrow? So you guys can get to know each other better.”
“Alright, I’ll give her a chance,” Aisha said. (Y/n) and Adam shared a smile before he walked away.
“Are you okay (Y/n)?”
(Y/n) began to feel tears form in their eyes, “I’m so stupid Aisha, I should’ve asked him earlier and now I’ve lost him.”
“Maybe she just wants a friend? Let’s just see what happens tomorrow,” the yellow ranger said as she put her arm around her friend.
(Y/n) could only nod.
_________________________________________
The next day was a nightmare.
(Y/n) ditched the poster since they couldn’t bring a bag with them. After they met up with Adam and Sabrina both (Y/n) and Aisha could tell that the girl did not want them there. From hitting Aisha in the face with her arm, to flat out ignoring (Y/n) when they said something, it was clear that Sabrina was showing her annoyance at their company.
“Why did you have to bring them along?” Sabrina scoffed to Adam.
“They’re my best friends, I just wanted all of you to get along.”
“Well, don’t hold your breath,” the raven haired girl scoffed.
The group finally got to a grove of trees but stopped in shock when Goldar and puddies appeared in front of them, “Where are you going?”
“Take cover Sabrina!” Adam yelled, “You too (Y/n).”
(Y/n) felt another pang in their chest, but tried to get behind the tree anyway.
“Thanks for the advice, power ranger. But I can take care of myself!”
The two stared in confusion that soon became shook as the girl morphed into a gold suit before walking over to join Goldar.
“What’s going on? Who are you?” Adam yelled.
“Scorpina! And I’m your worst nightmare.”
Before the three teens could react, Goldar swung his sword and they were tied up to the tree by a glowing rope, “Soon your friends will come to your rescue and that will be the end of the Power Rangers!”
Adam grunted as he tried to move his hands, “I can’t reach my morpher.”
“Me either,” Aisha said.
“Let us go you witch!” (Y/n) yelled.
_________________________________
It didn’t take long for the Rangers to figure out there wasn’t a new girl at Angel grove. After checking in with Zordon they found out that Sabrina was actually Scorpina. The rangers got to the park as fast as they could to save their friends.
“Are you guys okay?” Tommy yelled.
Goldar interrupted before the three hostages could talk, “So glad you all could join our little farewell party!”
“Go for it guys,” Adam said.
“Hang tight,” Tommy said, “ you guys handle the puddies, I’ll take Goldar and Scorpina.”
“Right! Let’s do it,” Rocky said.
“Worst day ever,” (Y/n) sighed as the rangers ran off. The group began knocking out puddies left and right.
“Why do you say that?” Adam asked. Tommy narrowly avoided a blast from Goldar.
“I had big plans for today and I don’t even know if I should do them after this.”
“What were they?” Rocky did a flying kick in the air knocking Goldar to the ground.
“Well… I was gonna ask someone to the dance, but he seemed interested in someone else.”
Kim landed a blow on Scorpina, making her lose balance.
“Can’t hurt to ask, the least he’ll do is say no.”
“I guess you’re right,” (Y/n) sighed.
The group finally knocked out the last of the puddies. Billy ran up to the tree and used his power lance on the ropes setting his friends free.
“Way to go guys!” Aisha said.
“Let’s do it Aisha! Zordon teleport (Y/n) to the command center,” Adam said.
Adam gave (Y/n) a thumbs up before she was transferred to the ranger’s base, then jumping back into the action with his team.
(Y/n) felt a pit in their stomach as they watched their friends battle the two monsters in the megazords. Once the battle was won the rangers returned to base, and (Y/n) began her usual check up on each ranger. After everyone was cleared for injuries they quickly gathered their things and left causing Adam to wonder what was bothering them.
______________________________
It took Aisha and (Y/n) two hours to get ready, with the first 45 minutes being Aisha convincing (Y/n) to go regardless of if she asked Adam or not. (Y/n) left with a single red rose tucked away for later.
Adam stood with Tommy and Kim at the dance. The awkwardness was present as Adam knew he was third wheeling with the star couple of Angel Grove high.
“Oh cheer up Adam, things could be worse,” Kim said.
“Yeah you could be going to the dance with Scorpina,” TOmmy joked as Adam shuddered.
“Hey, as long as I got my friends, everything will be cool.”
The lights were low and the music was bumping as the (Y/n) and Aisha walked into the youth center. They quickly found their friends in the big crowd of students.
“Wow (Y/n), you look amazing! RIght Adam?” Kim said.
Adams mouth was slightly open, practically drooling over their long time crush. Kim nudged him in the side breaking him from his trance, “Yeah you look awesome.”
(Y/n) smiled shyly.
Before (Y/n) could pull the rose out completely, Sarah Diaz approached and tapped Adam on the shoulder. (Y/n) pressed their lips together and turned away from the boy, but not before Adam could see the item they had in their hands.
“Hi Adam,” Sarah said shyly, “I was hoping you’d be here.”
“Sarah, hey. Where’s your date?” Adam said nervously.
“Um, I actually came here alone…”
Aisha stood watching the whole situation go down, she watched as (Y/n)’s eyes began to tear up again and she knew Tommy and Kim saw it too.
“Well I uh,” Adam said, he looked back at (Y/n) and saw their back turned to him, but he could still see the stem of the rose in their hands, “I actually came here with someone, but if you want you can stay with my friends.”
(Y/n)’s eyes looked up in confusion at their friends. The rangers looked at each other before shrugging.
“Oh, well that’s alright. My volleyball friends are here so I can just chill with them. It was nice seeing you Adam, (Y/n)’s really lucky,” Sarah said.
Adam turned back and tapped (Y/n) on the shoulder.
“I’ve been meaning to ask you for three days,” (Y/n) said as they held the rose out to the boy, “Lord Zedd just has terrible timing.”
Adam smiled as he took the rose into his right hand. Aisha sighed before exclaiming, “Don’t just stand there, ask them to dance!”
The two chuckled before Adam reached up and brushed (Y/n)’s hair back and placed the rose behind their ear, “Would you like to dance (Y/n)?”
“I’d love to.”

Unbelievable
Pairing: Seth Levine x MC (Jessica Parker)
Book: Red Carpet Diaries (around Chapter 11 of Book 2)
Word Count: ~2900
Rating: PG-13 (language, innuendo)
Summary: Watching football for the first time with Jessica during the playoffs is an interesting experience for Seth
Author’s Note: As some of you may know, I don’t really self-insert with my MCs, but I usually share one or two traits with them. Well, Jessica Parker and I share a love of football passed down from our fathers. Since she comes from Iowa, and they don’t have a NFL team there, she had three real options for her team pulling from the surrounding area - the Green Bay Packers, the Chicago Bears, and the Minnesota Vikings. Naturally, I selected my own love, the Vikings, for her.
This is written for my Choices Big Game Blitz event. It doesn’t feature the Superbowl, but it does feature one of the more exciting playoff games in recent history.
Tumblr media
Seth had known Jessica was a Minnesota Vikings fan, at least in theory. On Sundays this fall, he’d seen her in a Vikings t-shirt or an Adrian Peterson jersey. But he’d never watched a game with her, at least until today.
Truth be told, he never really cared about football. Maybe it was a side effect of growing up just outside of Cincinnati and therefore having to root for the Bengals, but Caleb was a pretty avid OSU fan, so there went that theory. At the end of the day, sports weren’t really Seth’s thing. With what he knew about Jessica, he’d assumed they weren’t really hers either.
But it turned out, football was very much Jessica’s thing. He had thought it was a little strange when she said she couldn’t go to the movies with him because of the playoffs. Seth had wanted to actually go out together, now that her faux-mance with Chadley was over and she wouldn’t get chewed out if they were spotted together too often. Jessica instead invited him over to her new penthouse to watch the game. Seth had figured the game would kind of be on in the background while they talked, or maybe even fooled around a bit. That theory went out the window when she didn’t even get off the couch to great him, just threw up a hand in a vague wave as she kept her eyes glued on her television.
“You missed kickoff. The Saints went three and out, but it’s still the Vike’s opening drive,” she said, barely acknowledging him when he kissed her on the cheek as he sat next to her on the couch. From that point on, Seth wasn’t even sure that she remembered he was there half the time. Basically anything she said was directed at the people on the TV, whether it be the coaches, the players, or the announcers, all of whom she referred to by name, like they were her close personal friends or her mortal enemies. It didn’t take long for Seth to learn that Mike Zimmer was a genius, Sean Payton was a smug asshole, and Joe Buck and Troy Aikmen were just the worst. It was only during the commercials that she would chat with him, but she mainly seemed to want to discuss the most recent plays, and as soon as the game was back on, her head snapped back to the TV, her attention completely focused on her favorite team.
Seth understood the basics of the game, run versus pass, how downs worked, turnovers, most of the penalties, that sort of thing, but after the first couple of drives, it was clear that he had almost nothing he could add to the conversation. Jessica was naming both offensive and defensive schemes, talking about things like “the slant” or a “double A gap” like those words were supposed to mean something to Seth. Meanwhile, the only player on the field he had heard of before today was Drew Brees, and he certainly wasn’t going to try to talk to her about the man she had just referred to as a “little punk ass ponzi scheme shill.” And that description was polite compared to the way she talked about the Saints coach, dropping more swear words in one description of him than he had heard her say the entire rest of the time he’d known her. So instead of saying something that would put him in the hot seat, he just watched along with her, going to grab them new beers or some more snacks from her kitchen every so often.
If was kind of fun, seeing this completely different side of her. She was loud, energized, and vibrant. Normally he was the one who would geek out about things, whether it be old-school B-movies, obscure video games, or TV shows with a niche cult following. But after the first quarter, it was clear that Jessica was a football nerd. The only thing he’d ever seen her close to this passionate about before was film, and that was her line of work. She was yelling at the Saints players whenever they committed penalties and dancing when the Vikings scored, and even Seth found himself cheering and exchanging high fives with her, her energy infectious. He quickly learned to keep his beer in his right hand, far away from Jessica, after she nearly knocked it to the ground when she went wild after one of the Vikings players picked off Brees.
She was in a great mood going into halftime. The Vikings were up 17 to 0 and their defense, which Jessica seemed to love way more than the offense, had two interceptions and a couple of sacks already. But after halftime, Seth felt the energy in the room start to shift. The Vikings offense stalled, the Saints scored a touchdown, and then Case Keenum, the Vikings’ quarterback threw a bad interception. Jessica’s good mood was quickly evaporating with the Viking’s lead. By the start of the fourth quarter, she was twisting her hands around each other in her lap and chewing on her lip.
“Damn it,” she muttered, when one of the Viking’s players got pulled for an injury evaluation in that goofy looking blue tent on the sideline. “Not Rhodes. Shit.” Seth was going to ask her why losing that particular player was such a bad thing, but then the Saints scored again, bringing the score to 14-17, and Jessica let off a string of curses, rubbing her hands over her face.
“Hey, they still have the lead,” said Seth, placing a hand on her back, trying to be reassuring, but Jessica just shook her head, rolling her shoulders slightly. She clearly didn’t want him touching her right now.
“You don’t understand. The Vikings always choke. Always. They are gonna piss this away. We have a chance at a home Superbowl, and we’re gonna choke away a three score lead at home.”
Jessica’s prediction turned out to be right. The Vikings added a field goal, but then the Saints blocked a punt, something Seth didn’t even know a team could do, and turned that good field position into another touchdown. The Saints had the lead by one, and he thought Jessica was going to lose her mind. Her hands kept clutching at her cheeks and temples between plays, fingers twining together during the action. All the fun and joy of the first half was gone, replaced by pure anxiety and frustration. It was uncomfortable even sitting next to her. Seth wanted to tell her that it was just a game, but he was pretty sure that would get him kicked out of her apartment, if not straight up dumped on the spot, so he kept his mouth shut, praying that the Vikings might still pull off the win. He didn’t know how bad Jessica would be after a loss, but he was pretty sure it would ruin their entire night.
Just when Seth thought it couldn’t get worse, the one announcer said, “I know Vikings fans don’t wanna see this, and they’ll blame me,” before showing a highlight package of Vikings missed field goal attempts from playoff games in years past.
“And those are just the kicks,” added the other announcer, “I mean, they’ve had some other devastating losses over the years in other ways.”
“Oh just rub it in, you fuckers. Fucking Joe Buck and Troy Aikmen,” she growled. Before Seth could think of anything to say to her that would have any chance of calming her down, one of the wide receivers for the Vikings, Seth thought it might be Adam Thielen, made an impressive catch, and Jessica swung from annoyed anger to pure joy in a nanosecond, jumping off the couch and letting out a massive cheer. She stayed on her feet for the rest of the drive, holding her breath as she watched the Vikings kicker make a pretty long field goal to take a two point lead.
Seth thought Jessica would be overjoyed that her team was back on top, but she seemed stressed as ever when she sat back down.
“Uhh, not to bother you, but shouldn’t you be happier that your team has the lead?” Seth asked during the commercial break.
Jessica shook her head, “There’s too much time left on the clock and all they have to do is get to the 35 yard line or so. A field goal wins it.”
“But the announcers keep talking about how the Vikings are the best defense in the league.”
“Not this half, they aren’t.”
All Seth could do was sit there and watch as Jessica became more and more agitated as her prediction proved eerily accurate. When the Saints kicker drilled a field goal through with 25 seconds left on the clock, he dropped his hand to her knee.
“I knew it, I just knew it,” she moaned, dropping her face into her hands. “It’s over. One and done again.”
Seth knew better than to point out there was still time left on the clock. Even he knew that 25 seconds was not a lot of time to score.
The drive was off to a bad start when the Vikings got a penalty right away, but then they picked up about 20 yards on one play. Before Seth could even mention that maybe her team had a chance, Jessica was talking.
“Fuck, over the center of the field. Damn it, now we don’t have a time out left for the field goal even if we can manage to get into range. The Saints are just gonna cover the damn sidelines.”
The next play was an incomplete pass that left 14 seconds on the clock. As the Saints called a timeout, Seth’s mind started racing, trying to come up with the right thing to say when that clock ticked down to zero.
“Offer to get drunk with her. Or curse out the Saints and call them cheaters, she seems to do that often. No, just hug her. Don’t say anything. There’s not going to be anything she wants to hear from you.”
“And now ten seconds remain,” called out the announcer after another incomplete pass, “in what could be a heartbreaking loss for the Vikings, and a thrilling come-from-behind win from the Saints. Winner goes to Philly.”
Seth could tell Jessica’s heart was racing. As much as she claimed this was over, he knew part of her was still hoping for a miracle. Hell, even he felt nervous, and prior to today, he didn’t think he’d ever even seen a Vikings game. As the Vikings lined up and snapped the ball, he braced himself for the next play or two which would inevitably seal this as a loss. Case Keenum launched the ball into the air.
“Keenum steps into it,” said the announcer, “pass is CAUGHT! DIGGS! SIDELINE! TOUCHDOWN! UNBELIEVABLE! VIKINGS WIN IT!”
Seth watched in awe as a Vikings player not only came down with the ball, but somehow wasn’t tackled by any Saints player. Instead, he sprinted down the sideline and into the endzone as the clock hit zero, throwing his helmet off and holding his arms out in celebration to the crowd. It’s how he would have written the ending in a sports movie, but it was happening in real life.
Jessica had somehow vaulted over her coffee table and was shrieking almost inhuman noises as she fell to her knees in front of her television. Seth, meanwhile felt glued to his spot on the couch, his jaw hung open in absolute shock as he watched the stadium turn to absolute pandemonium on the screen, fans going wild, players running all over the field, and the player who made that spectacular catch, Stefon Diggs, being completely mobbed in the endzone. He was pretty sure Prince’s Let’s Go Crazy was playing at the stadium, but it was hard to make out between the cheers from the television and the insane shrieks coming from Jessica.
A loud buzzing noise attracted Seth’s attention. He glanced down and saw Jessica’s phone, lit up with “Dad” glowing across the screen.
“Jessica?” he said, standing up and holding out her phone, “It’s your dad.”
Jessica climbed across her coffee table, knocking over a bowl a tortilla chips in the process, grabbing her phone with one hand and flinging herself at Seth with the other, nearly tackling him to the couch with her enthusiasm. She clung to him as she swiped to answer her phone, her hand visibly shaking.
“Ahh, Dad!” she screamed into her phone, nearly painful for Seth as she was dangerously close to his ear, “I know!... I KNOW!... I thought so, too!... YES!...Yeah, I know!...Skol!”
As she began to recount the game with her dad, she unglued herself from Seth, sitting on the floor in front of her TV and watching the chaos and excitement unfold at the stadium. Seth couldn’t help it, the whole thing was so surreal that he just started laughing lightly. Things like this just didn’t happen outside of movies. Figuring that Jessica was going to be caught up in this excitement for a while, Seth grabbed the trash can from the kitchen and started cleaning up the mess of chips that Jessica had knocked everywhere.
He had just about cleaned up all the scattered chips when he heard Jessica say “Oh, wow,” before she went silent. Seth glanced up he saw Case Keenum, a hero of a quarterback now, leading the entire stadium in the Vikings’ “Skol” chant. He sank onto the couch, watching in awe as the camera pulled back. He got chills, and it wasn’t even his team.
“Yeah, I know. I’ll let you go, Dad.... Yeah, I love you, too.” Jessica said before setting down her phone and joining Seth on the couch, curling her legs up underneath her body. “Can you believe it?” she asked, shaking his shoulder lightly.
“No,” he replied with a chuckle, “Why did they have another play there?” he asked, gesturing to the TV. After the cheer, Keenum had lined up and taken one more snap before kneeling down. Seth would have thought the game was over with the insane touchdown.
“They still had to either attempt an extra point or and two-point conversion after the touchdown,” she explained, “Diggs scored at the end of regulation, so it wasn’t sudden death or anything.”
“Why didn’t they just kick the extra point? Why kneel it?”
“Don’t want to risk a blocked kick that the Saints could try and run back or any injuries.”
“Interesting,” he said, nodding slightly. It was a lot more enjoyable watching the game with someone who would actually explain the little details to him
“Thanks for cleaning up, by the way,” she said, gesturing to the coffee table.
“Of course, Iowa.”
“So, I’m gonna need you here next Sunday evening. You are clearly some sort of good luck charm.”
“Oh, I see how it is. All I am is some human prop your football team,” Seth said dramatically, flinging his head back against the top of her couch in mock indignation.
Jessica grinned down at him, “Why else would I want you around? Seriously, though. You should come over next week.”
“Sure, why not? I managed to survive this game with you; I can probably handle another.”
“Oh no,” said Jessica, drawing her hand to her mouth, “Was I really that bad?”
Seth laughed, “Come on, you have to know what you’re like when you watch football.”
“I don’t know, I always watched with my dad growing up. I didn’t think we were too crazy.”
He just continued to chuckle, watching Jessica clearly attempt to remember her actions over the past three hours, “Let’s just say that I’m pretty sure this afternoon was the equivalent of about 32 major life events. There was joy, despair, worry, frustration, anger, excitement-” he listed, holding up his fingers as he started counting off emotions in jest, but Jessica cut him off with a kiss.
“I’m sorry I was so nutty,” she said as she pulled away.
“Nah. It’s fine, Iowa. Like I said, it was like going through a bunch of life’s ups and downs all back to back. It’s kind of nice getting a little preview of what the hell I’m apparently getting myself into.”
Jessica swatted him playfully, swinging her leg over his lap and straddling him. “There was one emotion I notice you didn’t list,” she said into his ear, grinding down against him.
“Seriously? Football turns you on?”
“No, the Vikings winning turns me on,” she replied, working her lips across his jaw, “Come on, Seth. Don’t you want to celebrate with me?”
Groaning, Seth turned his head, capturing Jessica’s lips in a heated kiss, sliding his hands under her jersey and tugging it over her head. “I think I can definitely get on board with this whole football thing,” he said between kisses. Jessica laughed, clutching tightly to his shoulders as he stood up and made his way toward her bedroom, ready to start their own private victory celebration.

Lothario Household round 1
Doing it this way seemed to work last time, so here goes again.
Don Lothario
Aspiration: Romance/Family
LTW: Woohoo with 20 Sims
Job: Intern (Medicine Level 4)
OTH: None discovered yet
ACR Preference: Straight
3 Bolts with Nina Caliente, 2 Bolts with Kaylynn Langerak, Cassandra Goth and Dina Caliente.
Tumblr media
Our round starts with Kaylynn sneaking out in the early hours of the morning.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don headed up to the deck to work on that much needed Logic skill point. I don’t know about you but I always stargaze in my underwear.
Tumblr media
Yay for Skyfix, sky boxes and pretty horizons.
Tumblr media
Always nice to earn some money, I wonder what he named the star?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He makes himself a nutrious breakfast. I speak from experience when I tell you medical types are pretty hypocritical about following recommended dietary guidelines. It’s hard to eat well when you work 12.5 hour shifts.
Tumblr media
Got to justify paying for Kaylynn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She doesn’t look terribly grateful.
Tumblr media
Did Don ever Go Steady? Anyone know his memories better than me?
Tumblr media
Back up to his telescope.
Tumblr media
Once he’d earned that Logic point I let him invite Nina over.
Tumblr media
They headed straight upstairs.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately I should have checked Don’s energy level.
Nina: Is that a Great Tit? No that’s the guy behind me...
Tumblr media
Don did make a recovery and gave Nina a massage to get her back in the mood.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That massage worked wonders. Also I love that painting, I feel it perfectly fits Don.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nina returned just after sunrise to leave Don a gift to show her appreciation of his ‘massage’ skills.
Tumblr media
Don had the day off so i set him to repair his Trash Compacter. The Mechanical skill point will come in handy too.
Tumblr media
I realised I’d failed to give Don a game console, so I corrected that grave omission.
Tumblr media
Kaylynn returned. She got to stay after work.
Tumblr media
I’m not sure about Don’s strategy for playing games though, hard to win if you’re ogling your competitor.
Tumblr media
Kaylynn knows what’s up, she takes a break from the game to ogle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think this is more the game Don wanted to be playing with Kaylynn.
Tumblr media
Up to this point I wasn’t a great fan of Don,  but right in this moment I did wonder if he was actually being ethical in his relationships. I will withhold judgement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He and Kaylynn had a good time in the hot tub and then it was time for her to go.
Tumblr media
I sent Don out to find himself some more ladies to spend time with, got to complete that LTW after all. First off he visited The Greasy Spork to get dinner.
Tumblr media
Darren: Bella Goth disappeared from his deck you know. He claims she was abducted by Aliens...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don then strolled down the road to Pleasantview’s only hottest nightspot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He met Jessica Peterson. He didn’t endear me by starting off with a negative relationship score but 2 bolts of attraction. Seems a bit Fuckboyish...
Tumblr media
Fortunately there may be another prospect for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He hits it off with Crystal Vu straight away, they also share 2 bolts and they actually like one another.
Tumblr media
Things progress to the hot tub.
Tumblr media
I’m with you Random Dormie, I would not be happy if people starting getting intimate in a hot tub in a public place. However as the maker of this lot, they are using it for it’s intended purpose.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Things are going well between them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m pretty sure this whole animation was made exclusively for Don. He just fits it perfectly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think she just rocked his world.
Tumblr media
Only another 17 to go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Don headed off pretty quickly, but somehow I don’t think Crystal minds. She looks like she got exactly what she wanted. Interestingly Don did develop a crush on her, but it wasn’t reciprocated.
Tumblr media
And that’s the end of Don’s first round.

Bless the Broken Road - 9
Once the team took off, Garcia started the briefing via video call.
“8-year-old Sadie Nelson went missing sometime after school today in Boise, Idaho. Her mother, Jessica Nelson, came to pick her up after school and she wasn’t at their normal meeting spot. She went inside to see if she was with a teacher, but they told her she’d left the building.”
“She was taken after school? It’s the end of June. Shouldn’t school be out?” Jane questioned.
“The last day of the year is Friday for the school district,” Garcia clarified. “School gets out at three and her mother said she usually picks Sadie up between 3:30 and 4.”
“The UNSUB would’ve had to have gotten there and taken her before Ms. Nelson arrived,” Morgan stated.
JJ jumped in, adding, “She must have gone willingly. The area would still be full of kids and parents. Screaming would’ve brought attention to what was happening.”
“So the UNSUB had to have the skills to execute his plan quickly and discreetly,” Rossi pointed out.
“No one’s come forward saying they’ve seen anything?” Reid asked.
“Not so far,” Garcia answered.
“Thanks, Garcia,” Hotch spoke. “That’s all we have right now. We have a long trip before we arrive. I suggest getting some rest now seeing as the time change will put us back three hours.”
The team settled in, Reid and Addison taking seats next to each other and cuddling up as they tried to get some sleep.
When they were close to landing, Garcia appeared on their screens with new information.
“I come bearing news. A witness has come forward; a boy in Sadie’s class that was standing with her before she got in the UNSUB’s vehicle. I sent the address  of the boy’s home to your devices.”
Hotch thanked her and the screen went blank again.
“Rossi and Morgan, go to the school, the principal and Sadie’s teacher are waiting for us. Talk to them about what they know, see if they can get security footage to Garcia, and take a look at the abduction site. JJ and I will go talk to Sadie’s parents. Reid and Addison, talk to Sadie’s classmate. See what he can tell you about the UNSUB.”
When the flight landed, they all headed to their separate vehicles.
“Hey, can I drive?” Jane asked Spencer.
"I don't know, can you? You might need the keys to do that."
Jane held up her hand, shaking the keys. “You mean these?”
He stuck his hands in his pockets and felt around, finding the keys missing. “How?”
"A magician never reveals her secrets." She gave him a wink and laughed.
They drove over to the boy’s house and introduced themselves to the boy’s mother. She invited them in and led them to her son’s room.
“Oliver, these people want to talk with you, ok? I’ll be in the other room,” she told him.
Spencer entered the room and went to kneel down beside the bed.
“Hi Oliver, my name is Spencer and this is Jane. We heard you were with Sadie after school today. Did you see who picked her up or what kind of car the person had?”
“He had a grey van,” Oliver spoke.
Jane stepped closer. “What kind of grey was it?” She looked around and found a blanket in a darker shade of grey. “Grey like this blanket or grey like the wall?”
“Like the blanket.”
“Did you see who was driving?” Spencer asked him.
“It was a man.”
“What color hair did he have?”
“Black.”
“Did he say anything?” Jane asked.
“He said he was her Uncle Tommy. He told her her mom thought it’d be fun to surprise her.”
“If it’s ok with your mom, do you think you could come with us to the police station?” Spencer asked him. “It would be really helpful if you could tell a sketch artist what you saw.”
“What’s a sketch artist?”
“It’s a person who can draw a picture of someone based on what you tell him.”
“OK,” Oliver agreed.
They all headed into the other room to speak with his mother. After getting her permission, they headed to the station. Jane called Hotch on the way, filling him in on what they learned so he and JJ could ask Sadie’s parents about an Uncle Tommy.
Eventually, the whole team met back at the station to go over what they had learned.
“Turns out Sadie did have an Uncle Tommy, but he died as a child,” JJ told the team after Jane recalled what Oliver had told her and Reid. “Her mother tells her stories about when she and Tommy were growing up but never told her that he was dead.”
“So this guy clearly did his research. He somehow knew she had an Uncle Tommy who wasn’t around anymore that he could pretend to be. He also knew what time to come pick her up,” Morgan stated.
“Oliver just finished with the sketch artist,” Reid said, joining the rest of the team. He pinned the picture up on the board.
Morgan’s phone went off, indicating that Garcia was calling.
“Hey baby girl, you’re on speakerphone with the whole team here.”
“I managed to get the license plate of the van the UNSUB was driving. They’re Montana plates and it turns out they were reported stolen a week ago in Montana,” she informed them.
“So it’s possible the UNSUB’s from Montana,” Rossi stated.
“I believe we have what we need to deliver the profile,” Hotch determined.
After the team delivered the profile, Hotch suggested that they rest for the night.
“What? Sadie is still out there, why would we rest?” Jane questioned.
“The police have all of the information that we have at the moment. In the meantime, we need to recharge so we can start fresh in the morning,” Hotch explained.
She wanted to argue some more, but knew it would do no good so she gave in and followed the rest of the team out to the vehicles to head to the hotel.
An hour after they got to the hotel, Reid came to Jane’s room, already clad in his pajamas. He found her with case files and papers scattered all over the bed, pacing back and forth.
“Jane, what are you doing? Hotch is right. I can tell you’re exhausted. We all need to get some rest,” he told her.
“No. What we need to do is find Sadie. her parents can’t go through what my-” She stopped herself.
“What your…what?” Jane ignored him and moved back to the bed, pretending to look for a specific paper. “Hey.” He touched her arm and she turned to look at him. “Tell me.”
She sighed and moved some of the papers out of the way so she could take a seat on the edge of the bed. Spencer did the same.
“Growing up, I lived near my aunt, uncle, and cousin. When we were younger, my cousin and I were best friends. We were the same age so we would always have sleepovers and play dates. There was a park behind their house. Just across the street. We were playing hide and seek one day and I couldn’t find Mary. Eventually, I gave up and called out but she was nowhere to be found. I went to go get my aunt and I remember having to wait for a dark grey van to pass. Two weeks later, Mary’s body turned up and they tracked down the man who took her. My aunt and uncle couldn’t stand living there anymore without her so they moved away.”
“Jane, I’m so sorry.” He wrapped an arm around her and pulled her close, rubbing her arm.
“Sadie just reminds me of her,” Jane explained.
“We’re gonna do our best to find her,” he assured her. “But right now you need to get some sleep.” He looked around. “Let’s clear these up and go to bed.”
“Alright, she agreed, nodding. She stood up and began to gather papers.
“Let me get these. Go change into your PJs and get ready for bed. I’ll clean up.”
“Thank you,” she said appreciatively. She gave him a peck on the cheek before heading into the bathroom. Once she was ready for bed and he had everything cleaned up, they crawled under the covers and went to sleep.” ~
Jane woke up in the morning to find that Spencer had left to return to his own room. They met in the lobby to all head to the station together.
When Jane arrived, Spencer asked if she was alright.
She nodded. “Let’s just catch this son of a bitch.”
When they arrived at the station, they gathered in their makeshift headquarters room to review what they already knew.
“Well, there’s been no ransom demand made so he doesn’t want money. It also means he has no intention of returning her,” Morgan stated.
“According to Oliver, he seemed friendly. That could have been an act though,” Jane added.
“Or it could’ve been sincere. What if this was the UNSUB’s sick way of adopting a kid?” Reid suggested.
Morgan dialed Garcia. “Garcia?”
“Whatever you need, I can provide.”
“Check for people in the area that applied to adopt and were rejected. See if any match our profile and the sketch of the UNSUB,” Hotch told her.
“There’s a lot of rejected prospective parents out there.”
“Check in Montana and narrow it to single men,” JJ told her.
“I found him! Miles Peterson from Glendive, Montana.”
“That’s all the way on the eastern side of the state, but he could still have made it all the way home 5-6 hours ago depending on stops,” Reid informed the group.
“Garcia, send us the address. We’re flying there now.” ~
Jane looked out the window of the jet and played with her hands. Spencer reached out and touched her shoulder.
“Hey.” She looked over at him. “We’re gonna find her.”
She looked away and nodded. “I know.”
~ When they arrived at Peterson’s house, they found the van with the stolen plates parked outside. He hadn’t taken the time to get rid of it yet.
Hotch split the team in two, Morgan, Addison and Rossi covering the front and himself, JJ and Reid going around back.
Morgan banged on the front door and called out, “Miles Peterson, FBI! Open up!”
He waited a beat for an answer before kicking the door down. As they ran in, they caught sight of Peterson’s foot as he turned the corner out of the room. They ran after him to find him cornered by the other three. He had his hands up in surrender, too scared to put up much of a fight.
“Where’s Sadie Nelson?” Hotch asked.
“She’s in the bedroom!” he told them.
Jane holstered her gun and headed down the hallway to the back bedroom. She opened the door and found Sadie sitting on the bed.
“Sadie, my name is Jane. I’m with the police. We’re going to take you home to your mom and dad. Are you alright?”
“Yeah, I’m ok. Is Uncle Tommy ok?”
Jane frowned but then caught herself. “He’s fine, but it’s time for you to go home.” Sadie nodded, grabbing her backpack and getting up. “Wait right here. I’ll be right back, ok?”
Jane shut the door again and re-entered the other room.
“Is she in there?” Spencer asked. Jane nodded.
Hotch holstered his gun and pulled out a pair of handcuffs. “Miles Peterson, you’re under arrest.” He cuffed him before reading him his rights as he led him out of the house.
“Is she alright?” JJ asked.
“Yeah, but she still believes Peterson is her Uncle Tommy. He must have fed her some story about going away with him for a vacation? I don’t know, but I didn’t want her to see him taken away. It’d only frighten her.”
The others nodded in understanding.
“I’ll go check and see where they’re at,” Rossi said, exiting the room. He came back a minute later and told them, “Hotch has him in one of the SUV’s. Morgan, why don’t you go with to take him to the local police station. The rest of us will take Sadie in the other SUV back to the jet and meet you two there.”
Morgan agreed and headed out the door. Jane retreated back to the bedroom and told Sadie it was time to go. The second-grader took her hand and followed her.
“Sadie, these are my friends Spencer, JJ, and Rossi. They’re police just like me. We’re gonna take you home, ok?”
“Where’d Uncle Tommy go?”
Jane opened her mouth to reply, but Spencer beat her to it. “He had a very important job to do at work. He’s sorry that your visit had to end so soon, but wants you to go back home to your parents now,” he told her.
“OK,” Sadie said.
The five of them headed out to the remaining SUV and climbed in.
On the flight back, Jane kept Sadie company, asking her about school and her friends and what she liked to do for fun. Anything to get her to stop thinking about the man she thought was her uncle.
They were able to reunite Sadie with her parents when they landed before flying home themselves.

(Guilty Party: I took the images from IMDB because I can’t screengrab over 8 hours and besides, my dog told me to.)
Tumblr media
Slasher: The Executioner is a Canadian TV series about, um, slashers and all that slasher stuff. Bogling about The Internet I discovered that the creator, one Aaron Martin by name, has wisely opted for an anthology format, whereby each season (two at present) is a complete storyline. Apparently there is connective tissue between each season  to engender a feel of them taking place in the same Slasher Universe; which is like the Marvel®©™ Universe but with less quips and more mom porn and severed hands. I say “apparently” because I haven’t seen the second season (Slasher: Guilty Party (2017)) I have seen the first season though and that definitely has more mom porn and severed hands than the Marvel®©™ Cinematic Universe.
Tumblr media
Now, if you’re reading this thing which is about a TV show called Slasher, then you might think you like slasher movies, but do you like slasher movies enough to watch what is effectively a 7 hour and change slasher movie? Do you? Huh? Huh? That’s a normal working day right there. You are right to be hesitant, as that doesn’t sound like it would work, at least not as entertainment, maybe as a kind of torture. The usual slasher movie is a timidly formulaic creature, so we can characterise the average slasher movie as starting with a brief kill, then some flopping bonelessly about with a solid hour of “meet the characters”, then 40 minutes or so of mayhem, climaxing with a one on one slobberknocker. Stick to that formula for 8 episodes and you’d end up (NB: the maths is a bit loose here) with an exciting first episode, 5.5 episodes of dishwater dull soap-operatics and then an insanely violent final 1.5 episodes. That would of course be stupid, which is one of roughly a billion reasons why they didn’t ask me to make it. No, they asked Aaron Martin and the Slasher gods should be thankful that Aaron Martin knew what to do.
Tumblr media
A nagging sense of fairness demands I should pause to note that hundreds of people were involved in the making of Slasher: The Executioner, but it’s accepted shorthand to say “Aaron Martin…” So, “Aaron Martin” made a long-ass slasher movie, but realising this was a marathon and not a sprint, structured each episode so that it worked within the larger narrative framework. It’s an approach familiar to anyone who read mainstream comics back when they had actual stories (rather than today’s unending conversations punctuated by punching; Calm down, Cochise, I’m not saying they were better back then (most of anything is shit after all), I’m just saying they were different). In effect then, for all the none old timey comics fans: in Slasher: The Executioner the uberplot chugs along while various subplots intertwine beneath it breeding red herrings, developing character and basically raising the stakes until uber and under finally intertwine in a climactic crescendo. Oh, and there is at least one kill every episode to keep your unhealthy interest piqued. Got to have those sweet, sweet kills. It is called Slasher after all, not Magic Picnic Time With The Dancing Rainbow Babies. Those dismissive of the slasher movie (Hi, mom!) often underestimate the variety of slasher movies; they aren’t all set in a holiday camp for randy morons on Prom Night one Halloween which is coincidentally, and impossibly, also Friday the 13th. No, there is also Cherry Falls (2000) and, oh, My Bloody Valentine (2009) and, er, anyway, probably some others. This type being The Small Town Terrorised by Its Past slasher, as it is more commonly known. This is the template which Slasher: The Executioner favours most. (The Internet Elves tell me Slasher: Guilty Party riffs on The Holiday Death Camp template).
Tumblr media
Events kick off with the present day return of pleasant, newlywed young artist Sarah Bennett (née Ingram) to Waterbury, where she was born on Halloween night in 1988, when a masked killer cut her from the womb of her mother, Rachel. Rachel’s husband, Bryan, had died about ten seconds earlier from a frenzied knife-torso interaction, leaving nobody to hand out candy to the trick or treaters except the killer, The Executioner, who docilely awaited the police cradling the bloody new-born in his arms. It’s fair to say Sarah has issues with Waterbury, and as her arrival coincides with  the start of a spate of copycat Executioner killings, Waterbury has issues with Sarah. And it’s this business that occupies your eyes and ears for the bulk of the 8 episodes. I mean, that was some spoilertastic stuff back there, yeah? But get this…that was only the opening 10 minutes; there’s plenty of unspoiled stuff and, hey, maybe those first 10 minutes I just got spoil all over aren’t all as they initially appear? That is a distinct possibility. Yes it is.
Tumblr media
What then unfolds over the televisually paced course of Slasher: The Executioner’s 8 episodes is slashtastically fun stuff. Pretty much everything you expect in a slasher movie happens, because that predictability is part of the fun of a slasher movie. Crucially, however, some stuff you don’t expect to happen in a slasher movie also happens, which is part of the fun of a good slasher movie. A good slasher movie has to both cater to and exceed expectations, and Slasher: the Executioner is a pretty good slasher movie despite its arse-numbing running time.  But then only a glutton would gulp it down one go; Slasher: The Executioner is most rewarding when taken episodically; which is kind of why they made it like that, I guess. With a gap between each episode you can ruminate and ratiocinate in an attempt to understand the motivations, unearth the clues and unmask the killer. Although, good luck with that; the identity of the killer may be easy to guess (it’s [Redacted]!) but it’s a lot less easy to back it up with clues and evidence. It’s more a case of “It’s [Redacted]” because it has to be, rather than you have been perceptive enough to amass an evidence trail suitable for a Court of Law. But then slasher maniacs rarely see the inside of a Court of Law, so going with your gut is okay in this context.
Tumblr media
The cast though? I mean, you’re going to be spending a lot of time with these people and given the nature of the beast some of them are going to have to surprise you with who they really turn out to be. Happily, everyone in Slasher: The Executioner is far better at this acting lark than the usual cast of a slasher movie. It probably helps that unlike most slasher movies the cast is portraying adults rather than the more usual teenagers. Feeelingzzzz aside, adult life is a lot more complex than teenage life, so there’s a lot more scope for surprise behaviour wise. And adults by definition have lived longer than teenagers so they have an actual past which could, maybe, be full of misdeeds and tragedy. That kind of thing would be pretty helpful were you trying to fill about 8 hours of screentime, yeah? Yeah, it totally would. As Sarah, Katie McGrath is maybe a bit of a milksop but this, to be fair, pays off later with a major change in attitude, and also in her defence she is mostly on the backfoot as surprises and violence tend to single her out. And she certainly rallies herself with an impressively sad ferocity come the bloody climax. Brandon Jay McLaren as her life partner convinces as a man too nice to be true, but who just might come through. The killer is great and clearly having a fun time, but their performance becomes a real humdinger once the reveal hits and the pretence can be dropped (in front of the viewer at least). Lots of actors, lots of performances and all of them are lots of fun. Some are more fun than others, but saying more would splash spoil all over the place. In a town this big there might be more than one mystery, is all i’m saying.
Tumblr media
Slasher: The Executioner is overwrought, it’s daft, it’s violent, it’s rarely dull and it successfully stretches your suspension of disbelief like so much Silly Putty. Pretty much a dreamy slasher experience all in all. Of course many a long form TV show comes a cropper when it has to deliver a definite ending. But rest easy, the end of Slasher: The Executioner doesn’t reveal everyone is dead, and, no, it wasn’t all a dream. The stakes are high ending wise; after nearly 8 hours Slasher needed to deliver a faceslap of an ending, and while the mechanics of what happen are hardly brain meltingly original, the psychological darkness of it was a bleak delight. In short the ending to Slasher: The Executioner is a TV win: it doesn’t make you wish you hadn’t bothered. As long as you came expecting a slasher, that is. The clue’s in the title after all.

Current Horror Movie and TV icons
I’ve heard the complaint that the era of Horror icons has passed.  The 1920s into the 40s had Lon Chaney, Bela Lugosi, Boris Karloff, Dwight Frye and Lon Chaney Jr.  The 1950s into the 1970s had Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and Vincent Price.
Tumblr media
Yet there are no enduring names specifically associated with horror today... or is there?
Here is a list of horror icons currently still alive and more heavily associated with horror than any other genre.
Note: These actors do not have to have a film or TV show currently in theatres or on TV to be on this list. They just have to be alive, iconic within the horror genre, and had a relatively recent role in the genre (Within the last twenty years).
Robert Englund:  First we have Robert Englund.  Robert Englund has been in many horror and scifi properties from Nightmare Cafe to Strangeland, but he’s probably best known for his repeated portrayal of nightmare-monster-demonic-ghost Freddy Krueger.   When people think of Freddy Krueger (despite others having taken the role after him) Robert Englund is still the name that comes to mind.  And his version is the visual that usually pops into peoples’ heads.
Tumblr media
Brad Dourif:   Brad Dourif has played Chucky (the 80s doll possessed by a dead serial killer) since 1988.   And he is still playing him today.  Brad is Chucky.  No one can truly replace him.  He has had other scifi and horror roles but he is Chucky.
Tumblr media
Sarah Michelle Gellar:  Sarah Michelle Gellar was Buffy The Vampire Slayer for seven years and also starred in such horror films as I know what you did last Summer and the American version of The Grudge.  Whether she likes it or not she will be remembered as a horror icon.
Tumblr media
Kathy Bates:  Kathy Bates has had many non-horror roles but her most iconic role will probably always be the obsessed fan, Annie Wilkes in the film adaptation of Misery.  Her recurring appearances in American horror story have established her as a horror icon.
Tumblr media
Jessica Lange: Despite having a long and impressive career, Jessica Lange most recently enthralled an entire generation with her deliciously wicked (and sometimes sympathetic) characters in American Horror Story.  Her characters in American Horror Story were not only critically acclaimed but also award winning.  Some would say the show suffers when she is not there.  Jessica Lange also taught an entire generation that being a “Scream Queen” does not require being a teen or twenty-something girl.
This was an important step in the evolution of modern horror.  Until American Horror Story, women who wanted to do horror felt relegated to playing the teen victim or the creepy old hag.  It was notoriously known in Hollywood that if you were a woman who did horror there was a twenty to forty year gap where getting roles would be hard to impossible, especially lead roles.  Jessica Lange opened the door for so many other roles for women (particularly older women) in the horror genre.
Perhaps, thanks to the likes of Jessica Lange, one day we’ll get a Peter Cushing-style older, kindly doctor vampire hunter played by a woman.  (I want that to exist so badly.)
Tumblr media
Bruce Campbell:  Bruce Campbell has had many roles, from Autolycus in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, to The man with the Screaming Brain but his most famous role is as Ash from the Evil Dead franchise.  Though there was a remake, most fans will forever associate Evil Dead with Bruce Campbell’s Ash, whom he most recently played in the TV series Ash vs. Evil Dead.
Tumblr media
Cassandra Peterson:  Cassandra Peterson AKA Elvira: Mistress of The Dark.  I don’t think I need to explain this one.   Elvira has been a horror icon since the 1980s and though they have tried, no one can replace Cassandra Peterson.
Tumblr media
Chris Sarandon:  Chris Sarandon in on this list for his role as the vampire Jerry Dandridge in the original Fright Night.  He also had a major role as the detective in the original Child’s Play movie.  He was also Jack Skellington’s speaking voice in Nightmare before Christmas.
Tumblr media
John Kassir:  Though you may not recognize this name immediately you probably recognize his voice if you are a horror fan.  John Kassir voiced The Crypt Keeper in Tales from the Crypt from 1989 until 1996 and then continued the role for The Tales from the Cryptkeeper animated series between 1993 until 1999.  His cackle that he has as old Crypty is so iconic that today people are reluctant to try Tales from the Crypt without him.
Tumblr media
Doug Jones:  And last but not least... Doug Jones.  You may not recognize the name but Doug Jones is our generation’s Lon Chaney.  He is the man under heavy monster makeup in so many great horror, fantasy, and scifi movies and shows.  From Billy in Hocus Pocus and Abe Sapien in Hellboy, to The faun in Pan’s Labyrinth and ghosts in Crimson Peak and “The Asset” (Sometimes called Charlie in fan circles) from The Shape of Water.  Doug is our man of a thousand faces.  You could almost guarantee, if the creature is skinny / skeletal, with large, expressive eyes, with grasping fingers or a menacing grin... it’s real-world sweet-heart Doug Jones under that makeup.
Tumblr media
I realize I am leaving a lot of names off this list but I wanted names specifically associated with horror and some great horror actors are not most heavily associated with horror.  An example of this is Jack Nicholson since Jack was in the original Little Shop of Horrors, The Raven, The Shining, and Wolf but most people- when they first hear his name, they don’t immediately think of horror.    I’ll mention Tim Curry here as well.  I could probably argue that he’s most associated with horror but I know there are those that disagree with me.
 ______________
Bonus mention Directors:
John Carpenter  Roger Corman  Guillermo del Toro    So there you have it.   Horror icons that are currently alive today.  ___________________________
Further Bonus Mentions:
Jamie Lee Curtis for the Halloween Franchise.
And  Anthony Head:  Anthony Head (Sometimes credited as Anthony Stewart Head).  Despite having more diverse roles (particularly in the UK) here in America Anthony Head is most well known for three roles.  The first is as The Watcher (and sometimes librarian-sorcerer) Giles from the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  The second is as King Uther Pendragon in Merlin and finally Repo! The Genetic Opera as The Repo Man himself, Nathan.  But no matter what, most fans will always associate Anthony Stewart Head with the role of Giles on Buffy The Vampire Slayer.

Tumblr media
In which Jessica Peterson executes her master plan – with surprising results. This chapter follows the events of Chapter XVII.
(18 pictures under the cut ♦ warnings: none)
Tumblr media
Jessica had combed her hair a thousand times to make it shiny. She had picked the lipstick shade she knew Carlos loved. Just in case if the potion didn't work perfectly.
Tumblr media
She had invited Carlos for drinks. Just to recall old times when the two were lovers. Little did he know that Jessica was planning for them to get back together. Whatever it took.
Tumblr media
"Hi, Carlos," she said when they met in the Casino bar. She couldn't but notice Carlos' eyes liking what they saw. "Hi, Jessica," Carlos said and licked his lips.
Tumblr media
Jessica shivered of disgust but didn't stop smiling. Carlos didn't seem to notice anything unusual. "How are you?" Jessica asked when they had taken seats. "Is Isabel treating you well?"
Tumblr media
"Splendidly," Carlos said. "They don't guess a thing. I'm good at playing helpless old man." He laughed at his own cleverness and Jessica struggled to not roll her eyes. "That's good to hear," she said instead and kept smiling like a beauty queen that she actually was. Twenty years ago she was crowned Miss Sagecastle.
Tumblr media
"Should we order something to drink?" Jessica asked as innocently as she could. "Yes," Carlos said. "Nothing too expensive, though!" Jessica snorted quietly. Soon you will not need to worry about spending your money. Because I'll spend them for you.
Tumblr media
She ordered two peach cocktails. Everything was going as planned and Carlos said: "My bladder needs to be emptied again. And seems like my colon wants to get rid of stuff, too, hahaha!"
Tumblr media
Jessica's smile was so fake it shouldn't have fooled anyone. Yet Carlos didn't notice anything. Think about the money, think about the money, think about the money, Jessica thought and breathed deeply. As soon as Carlos had left the room, Jessica opened her bag and dug out the tiny bottle of love potion.
Tumblr media
This will serve you right, she thought and looked around to see if anyone was looking. She opened the bottle and poured it all in Carlos' drink and carefully stirred it in. After 20 minutes, Carlos came back.
Tumblr media
"My stomach doesn't like the kale smoothies Isabel makes," he explained. He took a seat again. "I'm so thirsty!" Jessica had wondered if Carlos would taste the potion but to her delight he took the glass and emptied it with one big gulp.
Tumblr media
She had a crazy look in her eyes and Carlos raised his eyebrows. "What is it?" he asked. "I've just missed you so much," Jessica made up. How darn long will it take?
Tumblr media
"E-excuse me?" someone asked. Jessica turned around to see a weird blushing man who held papers and a pen. "You are Jessica Genevieve Peterson, Miss Sagecastle of year ..., yes?" A fan, how convenient, Jessica thought and again, tried not to roll her eyes. “Yes, I am.“
Tumblr media
"Can you sign… this for me?" the man asked and quickly showed a photo of Jessica as freshly crowned Miss Sagecastle. "You are even more beautiful in real life." "Thank you," Jessica said and smiled radiantly. "Lend me the pen. What's your name?" "La-lazlo," he said and was over the moon for the fact that Jessica Peterson now knew his name.
Tumblr media
She signed the photo, listened for a few more compliments and said goodbye as kindly as she could. Reluctantly, Lazlo left and Jessica turned around. "Where were we, Carlos dear?" she asked. But Carlos wasn't there.
Tumblr media
"Carlos?" she asked and looked everywhere. Why would he leave? "Carlos!" she shouted. Now she got an answer but not what she had expected. Jessica looked down and saw a small dog looking at her. "Why is there a dog in a bar?"
Tumblr media
The dog tilted its head and looked at her. Somehow it looked familiar. Then it hit her. She stared at the dog.
Tumblr media
"Carlos?" she whispered and the dog wagged its tail and barked. Carlos... is that dog?!
Tumblr media
He will love you unconditionally and be your loyal companion forever, she heard Olive Specter's words in her head. "That devious bitch," Jessica spitted.
Tumblr media
I think I wrote somewhere that Jessica was a former beauty queen (Miss Sagecastle or something else) but I can't find it anywhere. Maybe I just thought about it and didn't actually write it down.
After this Chapter, Jessica adopts Carlos the dog and Isabel inherits the money of her lost uncle.

Daredevil Season 3 Easter Eggs And References
I somehow managed to watch the full season in about a week. Probably because I actually had a day off of work in there. These season of Daredevil borrows heavily from two very famous comic book arcs, “Born Again,” and “Guardian Devil.” If you’re familiar with the comics, you probably saw a few things coming. That being said, there aren’t a huge amount of Easter eggs in the season.
As usual, the Easter eggs are broken down by episode so if you want to read as you go without being spoiled for future episodes, you can. This is spoiler-heavy though, so if you’re trying to steer clear and haven’t watched the season yet, look away. I’ll understand.
I didn’t spend a lot of time explaining who people are if they’ve appeared in the show before, maybe just a reminder here and there in case they didn’t make a huge impression on you.
So, onto the Easter eggs!
S3E01 “Resurrection”
Father Lantom
I’m sure we all remember him from earlier seasons, but this is just a reminder of his role in the comics. In the comics, he also provides a place of refuge for Cloak And Dagger as well as the Runaways. Taking in heroes with sad backstories is kind of his thing.
St. Agnes
Again, sure everyone recognizes it, but also just a reminder that on Agents of SHIELD, the orphanage where Daisy Johnson AKA Skye AKA Mary Sue Poots spent her youth was also called St. Agnes. I’d still love a connection.
The Timeline
Despite Matt waking up and seemingly thinking he just made it out of a collapsed building, it’s actually been “several weeks,” which probably puts this happening right around the same time as the events of the most recent season of Luke Cage or Iron Fist. More episodes will likely clear this up.
Sister Maggie
She is a comic book character, plucked from the pages of the “Born Again” story arc. There’s likely a big reveal coming with Sister Maggie, so I won’t spoil that for you. She also features prominently in the “Guardian Devil” story arc.
Ben Donovan
This lawyer certainly gets around. Taking care of Wilson Fisk still even though he was devoting so much time to Mariah Dillard over on Luke Cage.
Fisk And The Wall
After he gets bad news, he stares at the white wall of his prison cell. You’ll remember in season one, he liked “White Rabbit In A Snowstorm” because it helped him think. It’s also how he was forced to deal with his father abusing his mother.
Rymon Cable
The van that has bad guys Matt decides to test himself against? It’s full of clothes even though it has the Rymon Cable logo on it. There’s no comic book connection to Rymon, but Holly S. Rymon is a “production executive” on the series. She’s also worked on Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and The Punisher over the last two years.
S3E02 “Please”
Fisk’s Deal
This deal isn’t unlike ones he’s made in the comics to further his own ends. During “Civil War” he actually passes information about Captain America to Iron Man, which briefly makes him a target for other criminals. He tries to get his stature back by putting a hit out on Spider-Man and his family, which backfires when Spider-Man shows up in prison and beats him to a pulp.
Karen’s Backstory
In the comics, she’s an only child, but she does have darker and darker side stories. She becomes a drug addict and a prostitute at one point, so I’m curious to see how much the writers reveal of her dark backstory here.
Blackout Cripples NY
This headline appears on a new newspaper clipping on the wall in Karen’s Bulletin office. Now, all of the other clippings were there before the office belonged to her, courtesy of Ben Urich. That means this new headline is likely one of her stories. That story is likely in response to the blackouts that happened all over the world in Agents of SHIELD season four when a hate group was making a statement about Inhumans.
Blake Tower
You all remember Blake Tower, right? He’s been showing up on multiple shows, just like Ben Donovan, Claire Temple, and Turk Barrett.
“Hell’s Kitchen is ground zero for vigilantes…”
Foggy’s not wrong. Daredevil, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage have all been around in the last few years. Iron Fist promised to protect Hell’s Kitchen, but the events of his last season changed things up a bit.
S3E03 “No Good Deed”
Kingpin’s White/Grey/Lavender Penthouse
The color scheme for Wilson Fisk’s room is very reminiscent of his clothing choices in the comics.
The Presidential Hotel
Was it just me who noticed the hotel, combined with the “Lock Fisk up,” the fake news comments, and the fact that the owner was convicted of fraud? I think those are a lot of real world shoutouts right there, and I appreciate every single one of them.
Fisk’s White Suit
Matt might be hallucinating Fisk, but this is Kingpin’s comic book look. It’s perfect.
Millar
I couldn’t make out the second name of the electrical/plumbing company Matt sneaks into the hotel with, but the first in the logo is definitely Millar. Frank Miller is typically the name associated with Daredevil, but I feel like Millar is a shoutout to comic book creator Mark Millar. He’s better known for the Kick-Ass franchise and his work for DC, but he’s also written on some X-Men books, some Fantastic Four, and some Spider-Man, as well as the “Civil War” arc.
Vanessa Hiding In Spain
Vanessa frequently has to hide out in the comics to escape the wrath of Wilson’s enemies. Spain isn’t usually a big spot for her, but Wilson lived there for about a year in the comics before Lady Bullseye caught up with him and sent a bunch of Hand ninjas after him.
Agent Poindexter
He seems to like the nickname Dex and he has a great skillset - never missing his mark. Benjamin Poindexter is the main alias of a villain named Bullseye in the comics, and I don’t think that’s spoiling anything for you since casting rumors and trailers should have done that already. He’s probably Daredevil’s biggest enemy, not Kingpin. So, that’s going to be fun to watch develop.
Matt’s Clothes
Not his vigilante ensemble, which is a callback to him first starting out in season one. His walking around clothes. It looks a lot like how Stick used to dress when he was in New York, huh? Guess Matt is taking cues from his former sensei.
Matt Picking Foggy’s Pocket
Okay, so I realize this is just a means to an end for Matt, but I like to think of it as another connection between Matt and Daisy. Both orphans at St. Agnes (possibly the same one), both steal the ID of someone who meets with them in order to get more info. (In Daisy AKA Skye’s case, it was Mike Peterson in the Agents of SHIELD pilot.)
S3E04 “Blindsided”
District Attorney Foggy Nelson
Foggy was District Attorney of New York City for a while in the comics. He also became Chief of Staff for the mayor for a while too.
The Prison Fight Sequence
Less an Easter egg and more a reminder that Daredevil is known for doing a spectacular single take fight sequence every season. This one, where the cameraman literally just followed Charlie Cox from room to room lasted nearly a crazy 15 minutes. No cuts. That’s impressive.
“We were just being friendly.”
And Karen pulls a gun on some guys up to no good. I feel like she and Jessica Jones need to hang out more. They could just intimidate skeevey guys in alleys for laughs.
Trucks Full Of Chemicals
The FBI agent’s story about her dad hauling chemicals, I think, made a nice nod to the fact that both Matt Murdock and Jessica Jones got their abilities from trucks full of chemicals hitting them in the comics.
Felix Manning
“Felix” has been the name of the person in charge of Vanessa’s location, so I’m going to wager they’re one in the same. He also appears in a whopping two comic books - Daredevil issues 230 and 231. He wanted Melvin Potter, who appeared early in the Netflix series, to make him a duplicate of the Daredevil costume. He was actually killed by a Daredevil imposter. Foreshadowing? We’ll see.
A Taxi To The Water
A version of this happened in “Born Again.” It didn’t get rid of Matt, but it did make him a little more loopy.
S3E05 “The Perfect Game”
Fisk Giving Matt’s Name
There is a story in the comics where Fisk implicates Matt as a vigilante and gets him arrested. The FBI, however, decides not to take the deal with him, and they put Fisk in prison for numerous crimes as well. This clearly isn’t playing out exactly the same way, but, when Matt and Fisk try to break out of prison during a riot, it’s Bullseye who has to save them. I can’t help but wonder if there was a little inspiration there.
Felix Threatens Karen
Again, a little hint of her backstory here. In the comics, she’s also from the New England area. Her father, Paxton Page, who gets namechecked in the threat, actually became a villain named Death’s Head in the comics.
Baseball And Bullseye
Cute that little Dex has a bullseye on his baseball cap in his childhood. Funnily enough, comic book villain Bullseye claims to have attempted to become a major league baseball player, but he got bored pitching a no hitter and threw the ball at the final hitter to kill him in a minor league game. Killing his coach when he pulls him from the game is a bit of a twist on that.
S3E06 “The Devil You Know”
Matt Doesn’t Take Karen’s Coffee
Luke Cage’s “coffee” has ruined he drink for everyone. Karen offering Matt a cup when he comes to her for help, and Matt refusing could be a sign that anything romantic between them is officially over. Or it means nothing. Who knows?
Karen Is Way Too Comfortable In A Drug Den
Karen is around drugs a lot this season. A lot. And it all seems to give a nod to her comic book story, but I feel like we’re inching toward more of her family backstory with just how comfortable she is buying drugs and making her way around other addicts.
“Maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll lock me up next to Fisk.”
This did actually happen in the comics, as I’ve mentioned before. It’s a nice nod.
Felix Manning Getting Dex The Suit
Likewise, I also mentioned Felix being the one to get a copy of a Daredevil suit in the comics. Looks like his appearance was some foreshadowing after all.
Dex As Daredevil
Bullseye has actually dressed up as Daredevil in the comics as well. He’s not the only one. So has Foggy.
Karen Between Bullseye And A Victim
If Karen stepping between Dex and the witness gave you pause, it’s probably because you know how she loses her life in the comics. She gets between Bullseye and Matt in a fight, taking a lethal blow to save Matt’s life. This imagery is not going to be fun for Karen fans.
Side note: I’ve never really been a Karen Page fan because the comics put her firmly in the slot of victim. She never really outgrows that no matter who writes for her. But I love her this season. Maybe it’s because we got to see more of Karen being Karen than of trying to fill someone else’s shoes.
S3E07 “Aftermath”
The Hidden Room
Kingpin officially has a supervillain lair. Less of an Easter egg here and more of it being about time.
WJPBTV, WNEX, WHiH, etc
All of the news networks Fisk sees the Bulletin carnage on exist within the MCU already. WJPB is the news station most often seen in Luke Cage. WNEX is the station that aired Trish Talk. WHiH is the one most often seen in the movies. You get the idea.
Melvin Potter
AKA Gladiator in the comics is something of a gentle giant. He kind of fell into a life of crime, which is largely what Daredevil has done with him in the show as well. The shirt he’s wearing when Matt confronts him is a nod to his comic book costume. So are the saw blades. His girlfriend Betsy was, I believe, a social worker in the comics, not a parole officer. (BTW, the comic that features Matt, Fisk, and Bullseye breaking out of prison during a riot? Melvin’s in prison at the same time as well. Matt advises him to stay in his cell so he doesn’t get hurt.)
S3E08 “Upstairs/Downstairs”
Keys
As Karen nears the front door of her apartment, there’s a piece of paper from a legal pad that says “KEYS.” I love that she’s so focused on her work that she has likely forgotten to take her keys with her enough that it warrants a giant reminder.
Fisk’s Plan
His plan, of putting himself in charge of the criminal groups, is essentially what he wanted in season 2 as well when he gave Frank Castle a means to escape prison.
The Maggia
This is the first time the Italian-American version of the mafia has been mentioned in the present day in the MCU. I say present day because it did have its fingers in Agent Carter season two. In the comics, the Maggia gets the ire of quite a few heroes and antiheroes, but most often, the Punisher.
Sister Maggie
Unless you never read anything related to Daredevil at all, you were probably spoiled at some point that Sister Maggie was really Matt’s mom. People started speculating about the reveal being imminent as soon as there was a “get Maggie” at the end of The Defenders. In the comics, the reveal is a little different as Matt already suspected she was his mother before he found out for sure.
Apartment 131
Dex lives in apartment 131. What comic book did Bullseye make his debut in? Daredevil #131.
S3E09 “Revelations”
Kingpin
Wilson Fisk finally officially gets his codename. I like that we’re back to the season one idea of his lackeys not wanting to name him because someone is always watching/listening.
Karen’s Running
In the comics, Karen basically runs whenever things get hard. I’m kind of surprised she stuck things out this long on the show.
Rosalie Carbone
The woman we see Nadeem take in was last spotted in season two of Luke Cage making a play for Harlem. She’s the one with the Maggia connection. The other names we get are Hammond and Star. The only Hammond I know of in Marvel Comics was the original Human Torch. I’ve got nothing for Star, but the other names could have been picked at random. I don’t recognize the other two people at the table either.
S3E10 “Karen”
Karen Selling Drugs
At least this explains why she’s so comfortable in drug dens. I like that this gives us a nod to her comic book tragedy, but here she’s the seller instead of the addict.
Fagan Corners, Vermont
This is where Karen’s from in the comics as well. The name of the fictional town is an homage to Tom Rutland. Rutland organized an annual Halloween parade in Vermont themed around superheroes. He was actually written into Avengers comics in the 1970s.
Penny’s Place
Named for Karen’s mom in the comics, Penelope.
“... two lines away from doing blow jobs on the street for heroin…”
Maybe this isn’t true on the Netflix show, but yes, this happened in the comics.
Bullseye And Daredevil In The Church
Their in-church fight actually happened in the comics when Matt and Karen were hiding a baby in the church. The big difference here is that when Bullseye aimed a fatal blow at Daredevil with his own billy club, Karen got between them and died from her injury. Father Lantom takes the hit for Karen here.
S3E11 “Reunion”
Custos Diaboli
This is inscribed above the gate to get to the basement where Matt and Karen hide out. From the Latin, in translates to Guardian Devil, one of the comic book arcs the series draws from.
KTTA And ZCN
These are two of the networks I could make out on the mics in front of Fisk when he has a press conference outside of the hotel. KTTA is a television station from the comics that frequently reported on the Thunderbolts. ZCN already exists in the Netflix universe. They offered Trish Walker a job in the second season of Jessica Jones.
Nelson & Murdock: Attorneys At Law
Leave it to Foggy to formally name them as they were named in the comics (and the first season of the show).
Side note: I love the Holocaust survivor standing up to Fisk and refusing to give him her family’s painting. It very much reminds me of the scene in The Avengers when Loki demands everyone kneel, but one man reminds the crowd, “there are always men like you,” and refuses. It’s a great reminder that so many comic book creators, during an era when comics flourished, were Jewish, and their relatives were being persecuted and killed half a world away.
S3E12 “One Last Shot”
Vanessa Embracing The Kingpin
Not a lot of Easter eggs in this episode that I noticed, but I thought it was important to point out that in the normal timeline of the comics, Vanessa isn’t a part of Wilson’s criminal undertakings. In alternate timelines though, she’s the Kingpin herself. Her embracing his work and wanting to be a part of it feels like the writers are trying to find some middle ground there.
Side note: Some fans pointed out on twitter that the Morales vs Parker poster in Fogwell’s Gym is a nod to the Spider-Man characters of Marvel Comics. I find that unlikely only because there are plenty of boxers who have shared those names. It’s more likely a coincidence, especially since most of the names in previous seasons were nod to production team members and writers.
S3E13 “A New Napkin”
The Rose
Interesting that Vanessa specifies Fisk should pick the rose. Why? In the comics, Fisk’s son Richard became a vigilante who used the name the Rose. In fact, he wanted to overthrow his father at one point. His mother was the one who killed him. Will Vanessa become the Rose instead? It would be a nice touch.
The Crystals Bounce Off Fisk’s Suit Jacket
In the comics, Fisk actually wears kevlar under his suits to prevent any of his enemies from surprising him with bullets or knives. In the first season, his body armor that he was wearing were designed by Melvin Potter and he wore them under his suits. It seems he might have gotten an upgrade as everything just bounces off of it instead of tearing it, and he gives his jacket to Vanessa to prevent her being hit by anything.
Karen’s More Stable Than Jessica Jones
There are probably a lot of people more stable than Jessica Jones, Matt, jeez. That doesn’t mean she’s not a great detective.
Dex’s Injury And Cognium
In the comics, Bullseye did some time paralyzed. Of course, like all comic book characters, it didn’t last forever. Something else Dex had in the comics? A spine laced with adamantium. Yep, the same stuff on Wolverine’s bones. It’s what made him so indestructible. The MCU probably can’t use it since it’s reserved for the X-Men movies. At least not until everything about the Disney-FOX deal is official.
Dr. Oyama
This doc goes by another name in the comics. Kenji Oyama is Lord Dark Wind. This is the comic book doctor who found a way to make adamantium bond to bone. Wolverine and Bullseye have him to think for their bone structure.
Dex’s Eye
That final shot of Dex’s eye makes what we’ve all been waiting for clear. Dex is definitely officially Bullseye now.
Side note: The milk crates in the freezer with the bodies that have ice all over them? Must have been there for years. I’ve got milk crates used to store product in my freezer at work, and they never build up frost. And our freezer is kept far below zero. Also? I love how much Rosalie Carbone appreciates theatrics. And how Vanessa just wanders around in the background after Fisk repeatedly tells her to leave while there’s a huge fight going on. That’s all.

A Medieval Megakingdom update covering the last few days:
I remodeled Gabriel Green’s house, build hovels for Tara Kat and Chastity Gere, finally got Jessica Peterson moved into the church, and started giving Desiderata Valley sims their medieval makeovers. ...then I tried to use a downloaded tavern for the Baldwin’s Hedge Tavern and the game crashed. Sigh. I really don’t want to feel obligated to build every single lot I need personally, but downloaded lots tend to be a. not designed for the MCC, b. many years old, and c. come with loads of CC that just load blue and broken for me, somehow. i use the clean installer, I am in the process of downloading Literally Everything medieval for the Sims 2 that I can find, these are popular lots, and still... broken. I’m trying to reinstall the CEP to see if that helps with some of these; others I will have to hunt down or else just... forget about, and I don’t wanna.
Oh boy, I don’t usually put these behind a click so far, but... that’s a lot of photos.
Anyway, here’s Gabriel Green’s house! It’s kinda too fancy for him; he’s a yeoman. But I also couldn’t decide what kind of job he should have and am debating giving him a proper home business to take up most of this space; right now he’s vaguely set up as a carpenter.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...he wants to be a Royal Physician, but that’s not happening given his social class and his lack of college education. I am considering giving him the “healing herbal tea shop” I was planning to give the Cordial sisters, operating it out of his house in one of the big empty rooms, and then letting him join the medical career if he lives to see the subhood hit the appropriate level.
On to Tara Kat’s house! One sim who will probably not try to keep her last name when she marries. Also, I did not realize that the MCC does not outline making peasants into farmers, possibly because it outdates Sun & Moon’s Star Factory...? but whatever, it’s fine. I might one day try to make her have an Arrangement with the local grocer, we’ll see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ugh, I completely re-downloaded the medieval wood sets and it’s still giving me blue. that’s why I am experimenting with reinstalling the CEP.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not sure how well it shows up, but she’s got 5 each of about 10-20 different kinds of crops, plus a single industrial grain plot so she can work on providing animal feed. I... am not sure a single sim can actually handle this; she will be looking for a husband very quickly no doubt.
And Chastity Gere’s hovel:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She’s a woodcutter. I figured given her normal outfit, she should be a little tough and a little less gender-conforming than average. I bought her a lot of trees for her lot partially because Belladonna Cove’s nature lots aren’t going to have many choppable trees on them; BDC is more of a Meadows town.
Finally, the made-over sims of the day:
Tumblr media
Jessica Peterson; having left her Noble husband, she’s lost all status and was forced to go to the church. She can either stay, leave to get married and join her new husband’s social class, or leave on her own and be an outcast. We’ll see someday!
Tumblr media
Robert Kim. Like Tara Kat, I always forget this family exists! But they’re perfect for a hood where I needed to add more families at various locations and social classes. Given their house, they probably shouldn’t be peasants, but who cares? It’s getting bulldozed!
Tumblr media
Justin Kim.
Tumblr media
And Cynthia Kim! Boy, that is very much Not a medieval name.
Tumblr media
John Mole. I think I’m gonna make him be a hunter.
Tumblr media
Edward Contrary.
Tumblr media
Opal Contrary.
Tumblr media
and Rick Contrary. I haven’t decided what their family labor business is going to be yet, but they are peasants in the highly wooded Desiderata Valley, so...
Anyway, here’s the last one, and much most exciting. Presenting my best efforts to make a medieval version of the Ottomas family presentable!
Tumblr media
Dora Ottomas. Her face is just generally bad. I did my best.
Tumblr media
Peter Ottomas, looking surprisingly nice with his hair lengthened and his pornstache turned into a respectable medieval... goatee...?
Tumblr media
Samantha Ottomas, and geez why didn’t I work around that plumbob better? She looks fine, I think. There is something weird about her eyes, with misshapen circles underneath that screw with all makeup attempts, but she’s fine, she’s presentable.
Tumblr media
David Ottomas. As you may know, he suffers from both a weird nose, and the eye shape inherited from his mother, plus a little jutting lip. But some shaggy hair helped quite a bit.
Tumblr media
Sharla is a mess that’s barely holding it together for this picture. She’s got the eye shapes, the weird nose, and a severe jutting lip that cast a shadow on her upper lip, and no makeup I had could fix it. She looks perfectly fine here, but in motion it’s not pretty. Not to mention that I picked out this nice hair, and then when she started moving it became apparent that the hair was not affixed to her scalp correctly, causing floating hair and bald spots. I’ll give her a different hair when it comes time to play. I am impressed how nice and pleasant she managed to look for the picture, given all her myriad health issues.
Tumblr media
And Tommy Ottomas. He’s okay, I think his big problems are usually limited to the weird eye shapes. It’s usually the twins that, in my games, have historically had extremely odd and awkward faces. We’ll see whether they are cursed this time. The Ottomas family is going to own Desiderata Valley’s local hedge tavern, assuming I manage to add one. I really don’t wanna build the same type of community lot eight times, one for each subhood.

Why Nomadland Feels Like a True Story Documentary
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
Nomadland, the Oscar-tipped feature film from Chloé Zhao, debuted on Hulu Friday after getting a limited theatrical release in the U.S. The film stars Frances McDormand as Fern, an older woman and working class widow who travels the American west in a van, in which she also lives. Though Nomadland is not a true story or a documentary, the film often blurs the line between fiction and reality by centering real places and communities, as well as casting a number of real people who are playing fictionalized versions of themselves.
To further capture the feel of the nomadic experience, Zhao used a bare bones crew who traveled in vans and stayed in motels for the four-month production. Many critics and early reviewers, including our review out of TIFF last September, responded to a more authentic representation of America than we tend to get in mainstream cinema. When one considers Zhao will next be directing the upcoming Marvel’s Eternals, it makes her filmmaking techniques to create this viscerally authentic cinematic experience all the more unique.
Is Nomadland Based on a True Story?
While Nomadland is not a true story, it is based on a 2017 non-fiction book of the same name by Jessica Bruder. Subtitled “Surviving America in the 21st Century,” the Nomadland book investigates the transient community of mostly older, working class Americans who have traded living in a house for living in vans and campers. Bruder spent three years interviewing these nomadic Americans who have been left with few choices following the Great Recession, chronicling their hardship and resilience. While Fern may be a fictional character, her story is inspired by the experiences of many real people, some of whom are featured in the movie.
Similar to her work in 2017’s The Rider, Zhao chose to have all of the characters in Nomadland, save for McDormand’s Fern and David Strathairn’s Dave, played by non-actors as themselves. This includes Bob Wells, an older nomad and environmentalist whose YouTube Channel, CheapRVliving, has roughly a half-million subscribers. It also includes Linda May, Swankie, and Derek Endres. The man whom Fern’s character hugs in the opening scene is somebody Bruder knows from her time researching her book. While many of the stories the actors tell are not necessarily their own backstories (Swankie has not been diagnosed with cancer), some of them are based on real-life experiences.
In speaking about Zhao’s naturalistic style of filmmaker, directing assistant, actress and filmmaker Hannah Peterson told IndieWire: “You could see her listening to these individuals telling their stories, and then collaborating with them to fold their own narratives into the script. Chloé really allows people to choose how they want to represent themselves. The safety of fiction filmmaking, in my opinion, actually pulls out a level of honesty and authenticity that I think would be impossible if this was a documentary purporting to [be] truth.”
Is Fern Based on a Real Person?
Zhao also used this blending of fiction and reality to create the character of Fern, who is an amalgamation of McDormand, Bruder, and Linda May. As Bruder explained to Esquire. “Chloé told me that the character of Fern was essentially a composite. One of the parts of Fern was Frances herself, who used to fantasize about hitting a certain point in her sixties, dropping out of the movie world and hitting the road in an airstream, changing her name to Fern and drinking Wild Turkey. Then there was Linda May, in that, like Linda May, Fern is new to the road and experiencing a lot of things for the first time. Then the third part is kind of me, but as someone who is in this role of a docent that people are reacting to, and also somebody who learned a lot from Linda May.”
Is Empire, Nevada a Real Place?
Nomadland begins with titles explaining the story of Empire, Nevada, a town that faded into almost nothing after the closing of the U.S. Gypsum Corporation’s sheetrock plant, the main employer in the community. As the titles tell us, six months after the closing of the factory in January 2011, the Empire town zip code was discontinued. This background is 100 percent true and sets the scene for the film moving forward. Though Fern, who called Empire home for many years, may not be a real person, her story is one that the former residents of Empire, and other towns like it, share.
In Nomadland, Zhao does an incredibly poignant job of bringing these largely underrepresented places and communities to the big screen. The filmmaker does this by blurring the line not only between fiction and reality, but between character and viewer.
“I’m very interested in having this be very experiential,” Zhao said back in 2013 about her filmmaking technique. “I want to find new ways to place the camera to evoke more of a feeling. My goal is to put the camera inside of [the characters].”
Nomadland may be fictional, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a true story.

My Incomplete Fairy Tale Retellings Recs List
I compiled some of these for a friend who wanted to know, and decided to make a more complete list for posterity. This is by no means either a complete list or even a complete list of all of the fairy tale-based media that I’ve read and enjoyed, just what I could think off off the top of my head and looking through my bookshelves/Kindle shelves/Amazon lists.
Novels:
Ella Enchanted and its companion novel Fairest, Gail Carson Levine (Cinderella and Snow White, respectively)
The Two Princesses of Bamarre, Gail Carson Levine (original story, but fairy-tale inspired)
tbh, practically anything Levine’s ever written treads into fairy tale territory; I also highly recommend Ever and the Fairy Dust trilogy
Just Ella, Margaret Peterson Haddix (Cinderella)
Ash, Malinda Lo (Cinderella)
East/North Child, Edith Pattou (East of the Sun and West of the Moon)
Sun and Moon, Ice and Snow, Jessica Day George (East of the Sun and West of the Moon)
Ice, Sarah Beth Dunst (East of the Sun and West of the Moon)
The Lunar Chronicles, Marissa Meyer (Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Snow White)
Spindle’s End, Robin McKinley (Sleeping Beauty)
Robin McKinley literally made a name for herself writing fairy tale retellings (tbh she's probably the most famous writer of fairy tale-based stories for adults). Pick up any random book by her, and there’s about an 80/20 chance it’s a fairy tale retelling. I especially recommend The Hero and the Crown, Beauty (Beauty and the Beast), and Deerskin (Donkeyskin/Catskin)
Book of a Thousand Days, Shannon Hale (Maid Maleen)
The Books of Bayern, starting with The Goose Girl, by Shannon Hale (The Goose Girl)
Howl’s Moving Castle trilogy, Diana Wynne Jones (an original story, but with obvious use of fairy tale tropes, conventions, and language)
Fire and Hemlock, Diana Wynne Jones (Tam Lin)
Tithe, Holly Black (Tam Lin)
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon and When the Sea Turned to Silver, Grace Lin (based on Chinese mythology and folklore)
The Bear and the Nightingale, Katherine Arden (Vasilisa the Beautiful)
The Girls at the Kingfisher Club, Genevieve Valentine (The Twelve Dancing Princesses)
The Orphan’s Tales: In the Night Garden and The Orphan’s Tales: In the Cities of Coin and Spice, Catherynne M. Valente (of ‘The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland’ fame)
Deathless, Catherynne Valente (The Death of Koschei the Deathless)
Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy, Karen Foxlee (The Snow Queen)
Firebird, Mercedes Lackey (The Golden Bird/The Firebird)
The Black Swan, Mercedes Lackey (Swan Lake)
Mercedes Lackey is another author who tends to end up writing fairy tales even when she’s not writing fairy tales
Uprooted, Naomi Novik (an original book, but very obviously rooted in Eastern European/Russian fairy tales)
Daughter of the Forest, Juliet Marillier (The Six Swans/The Wild Swans)
Tiger Lily, Jodi Lynn Anderson (Peter Pan)
Peter and the Starcatchers series, Dave Perry and Ridley Peterson (Peter Pan)
The Mists of Avalon, Marion Zimmer Bradley (ok so technically this one’s not based on a fairy tale as it’s Arthurian legend from the point of view of the women involved, specifically Guinevere and Morgan/Morgana, but it’s so good I couldn’t bear to leave it off the list)
Short Story Anthologies (retellings and original tales included):
The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories, Angela Carter (I recommend the 75th Anniversary Edition)
My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me, Kate Bernheimer
features retellings such as Michael Cunningham’s “The Wild Swans”, Neil Gaiman’s “Orange”, John Updike’s “Bluebeard in Ireland”, and Karen Joy Fowler’s “Halfway People”
Kissing the Witch: Old Tales in New Skins, by Emma Donoghue
The Victorian Fairy Tale Book, Michael Patrick Hearn
The Complete Fairy Tales of George MacDonald
The Oxford Book of Modern Fairy Tales, edited by Alison Lurie
includes Nathaniel’s Hawthorne’s “Feathertop”, George MacDonald’s “The Light Princess”, Oscar Wilde’s “The Selfish Giant”, Robert Louis Stevenson’s “The Song of the Morrow”, Kenneth Grahame’s “The Reluctant Dragon”, H.G. Well’s “The Magic Shop”, Angela Carter’s “The Courtship of Mr. Lyon”, and Jane Yolen’s “The River Maid”
I cannot impress on everyone how amazing this anthology is. If you only get one book on this list, this would be a good one to get
The Starlit Wood, edited by Dominik Parisien
includes Garth Nix’s “Penny for a Match, Sister?” (The Little Match Girl), Marjorie Liu’s “The Briar and the Rose” (Sleeping Beauty), and Naomi Novik’s “Spinning Silver” (Rumplestiltskin)
Through the Woods, Emily Carroll (graphic novel collection)
Silver Birch, Blood Moon, edited by Ellen Datlow and Terri Windling
actually, all of Ellen Datlow’s retelling anthology series is really great: Snow White, Blood Red; Black Heart, Ivory Bones; Black Thorn, White Rose; Ruby Slippers, Golden Tears; and Black Swan, White Raven are the others
together, the anthology series features authors as diverse and wide-ranging as Neil Gaiman, Robin McKinley, Angela Carter, Tanith Lee, Joyce Carol Oates, Patricia C. Wrede, Jane Yolen, Nancy Kress, Melanie Tem, Roger Zelazny, Gene Wolfe, Susana Clarke, Nalo Hopkinson, Tim Wynne-Jones, and Anne Bishop
Bone Swans: Stories, C.S.E. Cooney
Fairy Tales in Popular Culture, Martin Hallett
includes Neil Gaiman’s “Snow, Glass, Apples” (featuring Vampire!Snow White) and Robin McKinley’s “The Princess and the Frog”
Red as Blood, or Tales from the Sisters Grimmer, Tanith Lee
Don’t Bet on the Prince: Contemporary Feminist Fairy Tales in North America and England, edited by Jack Zipes
Illustrated Tales/Comics/Webcomics:
Fables, Bill Willingham (aka, what Once Upon a Time should have been...yeah I'm not bitter at all)
The Sleeper and the Spindle, Neil Gaiman and Chris Riddell
Sandman Saga, Neil Gaiman
The Books of Magic, Neil Gaiman
Monstress, Marjorie Liu
Cinder and Ashe, Gerry Conway and Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez
The Legend of Bold Riley, Leia Weathington
Namesake, an absolutely fantastic webcomic based on a variety of fairy tales and fairy tale fantasy series (most notably the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland)
Valor Anthology (a comic-based anthology of fairy-tale retellings; LBGT+ friendly)
Instructions, written by Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Charles Vess
Also, a special shout-out to P.J. Lynch's illustrated version of ‘East of the Sun and West of the Moon’, and really all of the fairy tales books that Lynch illustrates. They're beautiful.
Anthologies of Actual Tales:
The Classic Fairy Tales (Norton Anthologies)
The Great Fairy Tale Tradition: From Straparola to the Brothers Grimm (Norton Critical Editions)
The Complete Grimm’s Fairy Tales, illustrated by Josef Scharl (Pantheon Fairy Tale Library)
The entire Pantheon Fairy Tale Library (Norweigan Folktales, Russian Folktales, Chinese Fairy Tales and Fantasies, Japanese Tales, Latin American Folktales, and African Folktales, among several others)
The Original Folk and Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm: The Complete First Edition, translated by Jack Zipes Fairy Tales from the Brothers Grimm, by Phillip Pullman
The Complete Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen (Literary Classics Collection)
Hans Christian Andersen’s Classic Fairy Tales Omnibus (Barnes and Noble Edition)
I’m going to be honest; complete HCA anthologies are hard as hell to find (unlike the Brothers Grimm) and my copy isn’t in print anymore, so I don’t know if the previous two suggestions are actually “complete” or not. Of the various collections I found, I’d go with either of the two I just mentioned or the ‘Annotated Hans Christian Andersen’ book, mentioned below
Andrew Lang’s Colored Fairy Books (excepting the Blue Fairy Book, which is a collection of popular fairy tales, each book contains tales loosely grouped by geographic location); probably one of the most well-known and comprehensive collections of fairy tales
Fearless Girls, Wise Women & Beloved Sisters: Heroines in Folktales from Around the World, Kathleen Ragan
I'm a big fan of the various "Annotated" Fairy Tale collections, like the Annotated Brothers Grimm, Annotated Classic Fairy Tales, and Annotated Hans Christen Andersen, though I don't always agree with the editorializing. It's a whole series.
On that note, look for book collections put together and/or edited by Maria Tatar and Jack Zipes. They're the two most prominent fairy tale scholars at the moment and basically have an unofficial duopoly on the fairy tale academic criticism market.
There are a ton more, but this is a good solid starting list. Go forth and enjoy fairy tales!
