Art for this fic started with a watercolor landscape of Lotus Pier and a small Jiang Cheng painted in gouache.

And when fwolfing picked who Jiang Cheng was exchanging messages with, I painted the other side, featuring Wei Wuxian at the Qinghe Nie tombs (read the fic to find out why he's there!!!)

Discussions about Wei Wuxian's latest message talisman inventions with fwolfing was a highlight for me, and this scene made me laugh so hard I choked on my tea. So of course I had to illustrate it. It's done in watercolor, gouache, and paper cutouts.

A ray of sunlight lit up the man from his nose upward, highlighting a lock of hair that nearly hung in his eyes. Nie Huaisang stepped closer to him, reaching out to tuck the lock behind Jiang Wanyin's ear. He was unable to resist the urge to touch his face, moving to cup his jaw in both hands and lift it so their eyes could meet.

“So mote it be, Jiang Wanyin,” he promised. “And you may call me Nie Huaisang.”

Wei Wuxian hears the stove click on and realizes he’s not alone in the communal space of his apartment. He has only one roommate, his best friend, Lan Wangji, who is always an early riser. Hopefully he’s making breakfast and not lunch. Surely Wei Wuxian would have heard him if he was here a few hours ago. 

He rolls back over to keep from suffocating in the couch cushions. Getting up sounds like a pain, so he keeps his eyes closed and tries to fall back asleep. Just a few more minutes…

Jin Guangyao’s mind began to race. Not today… nothing could go wrong today! He looked at his father again, and then everything happened all at once.

Jin Zixuan’s face twisted into an unreadable expression. He opened his mouth to speak, but before he could say anything, Jin Guangshan clapped his hands twice, and with a blunt shove against his side, Jin Guangyao was hurled down the long, steep stairwell.

The last glimpse he caught of his father’s impassive face burned itself into Jin Guangyao’s memory, just as what he next opened his eyes to - As he shakily tried to push himself up from the stone floor at the bottom of the steps, there was the figure of a large, bright dragon coiling in the air above him. Claws outstretched, it dived down to grab him.

Summary:  The Sunshot Campaign was losing. It was only a matter of time before Wen Ruohan beat them into submission. There were rumours surrounding a force in Yiling that could potentially turn the tide. The place was taken from the Wen early in the war but no one knows by whom, known only as the 'Yiling Patriarch'. All forces that the Wen have sent to try and retake Yiling have been destroyed entirely. If he allied with the campaign then it could potentially turn the tide of the war. A messenger was sent to him asking what he wants in exchange for an alliance.

The response came back: the heir of one of the Great Sects in marriage. For the war to be won, someone must be sacrificed.

Taking a deep breath he straightened his shoulders and tilted his chin up slightly in determination, “I will do it.”

The arguing continued and Lan Wangji frowned as it seemed that no one had heard him, until his eyes met his brother’s and saw that his face had gone white with shock.

Nie Mingjue looked between them, “What was that, Wangji?”

“I said, I will do it.” Lan Wangji repeated, gripping so tightly onto Bichen that his knuckles went white.

Summary:  Wei Ying’s eyebrows lift at the sight but Lan Wangji is focused on the flattened grasses at the base of the tree where he found Wei Ying. In his mind, he sees the too-still body, hears A-Yuan’s sobs, and has to breath through a sudden constriction around his chest.

Never had his feelings felt more sharp than when he held Wei Ying in his arms, so close to death. Everything had crystallized in that moment and he knew, most likely in the same way his father had known all those years ago, that he could not be without this person.

A brush with death reveals more than Wei Wuxian plans for and forces Lan Wangji to face his feelings.
