Humans Aren't That Scary

So, I've been seeing a lot of posts describing humans as these strong species, with terrifying adaptations. I'd like to join this bandwagon, and that's not the right phrase for what I'm doing but it's good enough!

I think that humans would be in the middle-range in terms of strength. I think yes, we would have adaptations that the aliens wouldn't. But I also think that they would have adaptations that we wouldn't. It would balance out, and if you look at humans currently, using us now as an example, we don't seem that scary. I do think that we could be seen as unpredictably violent, and that could lead to fear, but I don't think anyone would view us as scary due to strength.

Then again, I could be entirely wrong. As I'm writing this, I'm thinking. Humans really do love war. So maybe, as a species, I could understand others being afraid of us. But individually, possibly not. We have no (natural) tools to defend ourselves with. We're not very fast. We're not that strong, unless we train to be strong.

In terms of weapons, it is slightly odd to assume that alien species wouldn't have equal, or more advanced weapons than we do. Our spaceships aren't streamlined, our energy isn't efficient, etc.

I am jumping on the funny theory that humans are the weirdos of the universe, mainly because it's funny. I think if anything, we would be seen as odd, and potentially frightening for that reason. Humans (from what I've seen) are bullshitters. We are the funny people. We are the ones who will share an inside joke between the world. (Looking at you, Rick Astley)

But then again, maybe this is normal. Maybe humans are just another species, nothing remarkable. Maybe our quirks and weird things are normal things that happen in every species. Maybe we aren't all that scary, our weapons aren't that special, and we aren't as bloodthirsty or warmongering as we may think.

On that note, I'd like to dispose of everything I just said and say that anything is highly dependent on the other species. If they're less advanced than us, they've evolved from prey species instead of predator species, have adaptations for survival from predators instead of survival for killing prey, then yes, maybe we are terrifying. If nobody knows how to adapt to *our* adaptations, then maybe we are absolutely scary and strong and could destroy anyone in combat. It all depends on the other species, and how they've evolved.

As a final note, I'm writing this at 2 am after around two hours of scrolling through the space Australia tag. Don't take any of this seriously. I know nothing about anything, I am rambling about this.

Little things adults and older people can do to help younger people and children feel included, safe, and respected as an equal individual:

Ask before touching the young person - even for hugs. Ask before you take pictures of them, and let them see photographs of them before they are printed or sent to others (even family).

Apologize when you are wrong

Ask for a young persons thoughts on a subject, then engage with them after they have spoken

Demonstrate behaviour you want to see from them (see: apologizing). Say "excuse me," say "thank you," say "please" to them

Validate their feelings, even if they don't know how to express them just yet

Remember that this is the first time they've been alive, and that you've had way longer to "figure it out"

These are some things I wish other adults remembered when engaging with young folks. We so often forget what childhood felt like and how unfair it all was because we were often awarded freedoms as adults that we never had as children. These kids are equal to adults, and they deserve the same courtesy, respect, kindness, and understanding we give to other adults.

Losing my shit about this article in which a transphobic Tory was so busy panicking about existing in the vicinity of a Trans that she almost certainly misheard "jeans" as "penis" and decided that not only was this a problem with the other woman, but also that the world must be informed of this pressing danger.

Mage reader is definitely the type to purposefully jump into siren infested waters lmao.

Like imagine you overhear some sailors talking about how they have to sail past siren territory and your ears perk up. You beg the sailors to let you join, under the pretence that you're a studious mage who's "researching sirens" and "studying their magic".

The sailors believe you and bring you along the trip to the rough waters of the siren's territory. They've all plugged and covered their ears as usual, except for you, you're too busy leaning over the ships edge to get a peak at any sirens below. And wouldn't you know, the second you hear the siren's song you're gone. Lost in a trance, blank expression unable to hear the sailors yelling at you as you stand up on the ships edge and jump right into the sea.

The cold waters shock you out of your trance as you take in the quiet surroundings, salt water burning your eyes. You try and swim to the surface but feel a strong tug on your leg. Squinting down into the deep darkness you finally see the creature you were looking for.

Dark black eyes stare up at you from below, it's powerful tail swaying behind it. The siren pulls you down, deeper into it's predatory hold with it's clawed hands. You stare at it in awe and the siren stares back, confused as to why you aren't struggling at all.

You then feel a pinch in your lungs as you run out of air. You promptly take both hands and firmly grasp the sirens cold cheeks before pulling the creature into a deep kiss.

The siren freezes in absolute shock as you kiss them deeply. The kiss breaths magic into your lungs, giving you temporary air. You release the sea creature from the kiss and take a hesitant breath.

"That actually worked?!?!"

Your excited yell comes out as just bubbles in the water as the siren continues to stare, dumbfounded. Your hands move from their cheeks to the sirens agape mouth, excitedly exclaiming how sharp their teeth are while touching the pointed tips with your fingers.

You're very touchy, the siren learns as they let you marvel at their body. Running your fingers down the sirens arm, comparing your hands, intertwining your fingers. The siren is at a complete loss of how to deal with this but before you can touch anything too important you feel that pinch in your lungs again.

You look up at the beast and tap your lips. The siren finally huffs at you in disbelief and you take that as a yes and pull them in for another deep kiss. You kiss for much longer than is necessary and you even try to sneak your tongue into the kiss which earns you a little nip from the siren.

The creature grins at you, pulls your body against theirs and comes to the conclusion not to eat you

You bring your arms around the shoulders of their much bigger frame as they hold you close to swim deeper into the cold depths.

They have to show the rest of the pod this very strange human they caught.

Danny- newly molted into his adult ghost-form- just wants to say hello to his sort-of cousin’s friends, and would like to also get them away from the deep area of the Zone where the beings would not be afraid to nab a living being for a collection or two.

A human rights volunteer in occupied West Bank has been arrested following the bulldozing of a Palestinian family home by Israeli forces.

She has been detained for entirely spurious reasons;

Human rights monitors in the region are working under constant threat of sexual assault, being held at gunpoint and having their belongings destroyed. I know firsthand of volunteers who’ve been surrounded by IOF combat vehicles until 2am, and one who had her phone smashed.

if more zombie horror focused more on the "died and came back wrong" aspect and less on jumpscares and guys in halloween makeup screaming and biting people and jerking the camera around i would enjoy them more
