October 2022 Book Goals

October🍂 , One of my favorite months of the year and it's time for a spooky 👻 book month theme. All month long I'm going to largely devote myself to reading dark academia, sci-fi, horror, thriller, mystery, magic, or Halloween-related books. My exceptions are books that I've had on hold at my library that come through.

Book goal: 12 books 📖

Dream goal: 24 books 📚

Book Challenges

The Horror Aficionados group on Goodreads is hosting a challenge to read horror stories that meet the following listed topics:

I have until November 30th to complete the challenge but I hope I can either finish the challenge by the end of the month or make a major dent into it. Also, I have 17 books left to read for the PopSugar 2022 challenge and there are 7 prompts I need to fulfill to keep me on track so I've chosen:

A book with cuterly in the cover or in the title

A book about witches

A book set on a train, plane, or cruise ship

A book with a protagonist who uses a mobility aid

I have zero clue what I'm reading for most of my book challenges but here are some books I know for sure I'll be reading this month:

Most anticipated: It's a tie between Sleeping Beauties and PenPal. I've actually never read a Stephen King book and so I decided to start with this one as my first and so far I really like it but it's kind of hard to follow with the number of characters. I've heard amazing things about PenPal and that it's extremely disturbing which I am ready for! I actually rarely read scary books aside from psychological thrillers but those rarely freak me out so honestly this entire genre will be new for me.

Book I already know I'm going to love: The Book Thief. I know very little but a long time ago I read the first chapter and I was hooked but life got in the way. I just have a strong feeling about this one since everyone I know recommends it to me.

Nostalgic selection for October:

FEAR STREET SAGA!!!

R.L. Stine was my favorite author as a teenager. He's the only horror author I ever went out of my way to read and I was obsessed with Fear Street. I read the cheerleader saga once a year and I'm excited to read the rest because it's been so long that I don't even remember most of them. I do know they're not long reads so we'll see how many of these I can bang out. They're largely why my dream goal is so high.

I'm so excited for this month and to see how I fill this out in the end. I had most of September planned out but since I'm new to the horror genre, don't really read a lot of sci-fi or magic books, and dark academia is new to me I'm eager to see how I take to this challenge 😁🎃

I want to thank everyone their support with reblogging my stuff over the years and reblogging some of the context of the situation.

Tumblr and Instagram is filled with the most supportive people I’ve ever had the chance of meeting. The last time something like this happened, I didn’t have much support, not even from people I thought were close to me. It took me a year or two to be okay with being perceived again in fandoms. So I’m very grateful for everything.

I just wanted to post that I appreciate all of the asks and I’ve been reading all of them. I actually get anxious I’m spamming everyone too much so I probably won’t reply to everything. Please don’t feel pressured to support me financially, there’s is a free option on patreon to follow. I’ll post future project plans and occasional updates because I still love comics and I still love DC/Marvel. I love stupid superhero G/t scenarios so much cause it just adds so much variety to the typical dynamic.

Like character A has the power to control their weight/density and is just an absolute tank and very much likes it.

Character B is a sizeshifter and is also an absolute tank. They also really like being "the tank."

They can't stand one another. Absolute rivals despite having the same friend group. They're always trying to assert some kind of dominance over the other. Like A will make themselves incredibly dense so B can't pick them up (which to any bystanders is downright hilarious). B, who in reality is short than A, will continously grow just a bit taller than them in everyday setting, or downright loom over them at their larger size if given the opportunity.

Like the comedy potential for the tiny to just be able to pin down the giant ?? Amazing.

Or imagine A is more freaked out by the size than they've been letting on; Some sort of danger happens and A is left unable to walk and they need to get away fast. Maybe an explosion is imminent, maybe a building is about to collapse, either way they need to move fast. B goes to pick them up but they make themselves heavier, refusing to move.

"Nows not the time A- we need to move -" B freezes. A was crying. They've never seen A cry. Just how hurt were they?

B feels guilt well up. Did A not trust them that much? Sure they fought, but they had to know they would never actually hurt them...

"A, please, we have to leave. I'll be careful, I promise. I've done this with civilians hundr-"

"-Please..." A's normally confident voice is nothing short of a whimper. Their eyes squeezed tight, refusing to look at B. "I'll make myself light, just... please don't pick me up like that."

What??

What was that supposed to mean? What difference did it make?? With no time to argue B shrinks down and picks them up. They've never felt A lighten themselves and it's a jarring feeling picking someone up at their normal size with them weighing next to nothing. There was time to dwell on how bizzare this was becoming.

B ran, awkwardly caring the oversized yet underweight body of A as they raced to clear the area. So what if they added a few extra inches to themselves between strides? They needed to get out of here fast and time was running out.

They wouldn't make it. Not at this height.

There was no time to argue.

"A," Their voice is gentle but firm, leaving no room for debate, "Close your eyes."

They've delt with this before. Children afraid of them, victims of Kaiju attacks. Size could be scary to some... they just never imagined A would be amoung them.

They feel A press their face against their shirt, hands balled into fists. They cover A with their hand, shielding them from the sight of the world lurching as they grow.

so i wrote an 8-page essay about personhood and yoo joonghyuk in omniscient reader's viewpoint for my real life seminar for a real life grade that will be on my academic record forever. why? because im insane.

i would highly recommend reading this short text as an introduction to some of the theory and terms used in my essay; ive also included an extremely condensed version of the major points used for my paper under the cut.

narrative prosthesis: disability and the dependencies of discourse speaks on disability— and more abstractly, a deficiency in something— being a vital part of literary narratives, while also disqualifying disabled people from being perceived as human.

characters need to be missing something or deficient in some way in order to necessitate a story to be told about them, and at the same time this disqualifies them from being a "human person". essentially, disability is used because of its inherent implications: that there is a story to be told about it, and that there is a story that can be made from it. the end goal of the narrative is to either "fix" this disability/deficiency, or to "prosthesize" it with an equally narratively valuable explanation or compensation, hiding it from view.

disability and its place in literature is surrounded by a myriad of issues, such as how representations of disabled people are used to justify their abuse and exploitation. disability is viewed as the "master trope of human disqualification", automatically marking someone to be completely unrecognisable as a "normal" human, and when a disability becomes too apparent— both in literature and in the real world— a prosthetic is sought by the narrative or by social pressure in order to "compensate" for the disability, restoring it to an "acceptable" level.
