Lecture 20: Pop Rap: British-born Young MC (Marvin Young), a rapper raised in the United States, enjoyed stardom in 1989 and 1990 with his huge pop rap hit “Bust a Move” By the summer of 1990, the catchy, humorous rap song could frequently be heard on radios across North America. With its funny and harmless lyrics about the challenges of meeting young women, “Bust a Move” enjoyed big crossover success among African American and white listeners alike, and it became representative of a type of sedate rap song that was acceptable to mainstream listeners.

Lecture 20: Rap goes mainstream! One of the most iconic and popular videos of the 1980s, the 1986 collaboration between Queens rappers Run-D.M.C. and Boston hard rock band Aerosmith for a remake of the latter’s 1975 hit “Walk This Way” not only helped to revive Aerosmith’s sagging career, it also represented a huge mainstream breakthrough for rap music. Thanks to the overwhelming success of “Walk This Way” and its music video (shown here), the mainstreaming of rap music and hip hop culture was underway. Note: I realize this is a re-post from my lecture on music videos, but it’s such an important breakthrough for rap that it needs to be re-posted here.
