According to an old Native American legend, one day there was a big fire in the forest. All the animals fled in terror in all directions, because it was a very violent fire. Suddenly, the jaguar saw a hummingbird pass over his head, but in the opposite direction. The hummingbird flew towards the fire!

Whatever happened, he wouldn't stop. Moments later, the jaguar saw him pass again, this time in the same direction as the jaguar was walking. He could observe this coming and going, until he decided to ask the bird about it, because it seemed very bizarre behavior.

"What are you doing, hummingbird?" he asked.

"I am going to the lake," he answered, "I drink water with my beak and throw it on the fire to extinguish it." The jaguar laughed. 'Are you crazy? Do you really think that you can put out that big fire on your own with your very small beak?'

'No,' said the hummingbird, 'I know I can't. But the forest is my home. It feeds me, it shelters me and my family. I am very grateful for that. And I help the forest grow by pollinating its flowers. I am part of her and the forest is part of me. I know I can't put out the fire, but I must do my part.'

At that moment, the forest spirits, who listened to the hummingbird, were moved by the bird and its devotion to the forest, miraculously they sent a torrential downpour, which put an end to the great fire.

The Native American grandmothers would occasionally tell this story to their grandchildren, then conclude with, "Do you want to attract miracles into your life? Do your part."

Telling Stories to better the World

*looks on the calender* You know what time it is? Yeah, it is time for the alpaca to rave on about the power of stories once again. Because I kinda feel that we cannot talk about that enough.

Say it loud and say it clear: Stories have power over us.

The baddies kinda understand that. Which is why they use stories as propaganda tools. I mean, there is a reason why the US Military funds the Marvel movies and stuff like Top Gun. Because it is propaganda that exists to serve their goal.

And humans also have always kinda understood it. Because guess what: Fairytales existed as teaching tools. Be it to teach kids to not run into the forest at night... Or do a Beauty and the Beast and exist to teach young girls that: "Hey, your political husband might be abusive, but you can try and tame him, girl!"

A lot of oral stories have once existed for such reasons. To both teach people about the world and reaffirm a society's values. And this is still true to this day.

I have been harping on anarchist ideas vs capitalist ideas for the last few days and the entire story thing plays into this a lot.

And yeah, I gotta crap on the MCU here once more, because it kinda is the most influencial offender here. Because those people know the power of stories. Which is why in most of the MCU movies the bad guys wanna change the system - while the good guys heroically defend the status quo without ever questioning whether or not the bad guys might actually have a point in some cases. (Worst offender is obviously Falcon and the Winter Soldier.)

Given that mass media right now very much is held obviously by the capitalist class, for the most part media only rarely gets to sneak in messages that are too anti-capitalist. (Which is also, why modern Cyberpunk, especially western Cyberpunk, does not have a ton of bite going on.) And in many cases it has to be sneaky and rely on the lack of media literacy in the folks financing the movies. Like the Matrix, for example. But in that case they obviously run the risk of the viewer also not quite getting that message, if they are not primed for it.

But we do need those stories.

We need stories in which people rebel against a system and win. In which those rebels are allowed to be heroic, instead of the narrative going: "Well, sure, their goal was admirable, but we just cannot condone violence!"

We also need stories in which people live in a less hierarchical society. In which people are aiding one another. In which it is not rugged individuals saving the world, but close-knit friend groups and communities working together.

And we need stories, in which climate change is stopped in time. In which people live actually on renewables and micro grids. In which people then also live without capitalism. Because we need to learn to view that world as possible,

So, if you are a creator... You know what to do!

some people from older generations act like gen z is gonna come in and save the day and like

first of all, you're already old enough to vote and do all the things you could make an effort too. That's not to say there are no older people making an effort but they're generally not the ones saying gen z will save the day

there are a lot of gen z white supremacists, and neo-nazis, and andrew tate fans, and trumpies, and tankies, and trad-wives, and TERFs. There have been for a while. Like I don't think some of you guys understand how much of an effect the internet pipelines have had on gen z

then, while I understand this misconception, there are not that many of us who are super interested in politics in activism. A lot of us are very exhausted by it all and will not participate nearly as much as you think. Like yes voter rates will probably follow the upward trend because that has been worked into us, but some of y'all are acting like once all the gen z kids are out of high school we're gonna succesfully organize the entire working class and succesfully organize large scale strikes and blackouts that shut down the economy, or that we're gonna somehow take over most of the seats in the government and magically fix all the institutional issues

and like, no, sorry to break it to you but that's not gonna happen

It's definitely gonna help when all of gen z is out of high school and the boomers are not the majority of all voters for the first time in forever, but it's not like the entire world is gonna magically become all rainbows and sparkles and everyone's gonna get super accepting just cause gen z is here to save the day. there will still be all sorts of extremism and discrimination, and a lot of it will be coming from gen z and I know that cause it is happening right now.

It also really sucks for us cause that's a lot of pressure that you've all been putting on us to fix the world and it's a pressure a lot of us have felt since we were quite young and it's really not helping. Like it's nice that you have faith in us but as a high schooler who's trying to get into college and is worrying about transitioning to adulthood and the cost of going to college rn, the pressure to fix the world is not helping at all so please just stop

Rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and today’s new issue with the show is how Buffy is the “chosen” one who has no say in the matter, these old men in England all seem to think they own her, and all of them - including our boy Giles - get a salary for doing this, but for some reason Buffy is expected to support herself and her kid sister working at the Burger Palace, getting not a dime for all HER labor. No one questions this, even as the Council gets mad at her for going to college.

Hell, Faith is a teenage dropout living in a shitty motel with no support. No wonder she goes evil.
