A week or so ago, I got an email inviting me to attend a screening of the first 2 episode of “Mr & Mrs Smith” at a Cinemark Theater. I had planned to watch the series (starring Donald Glover) so I signed up for the tickets.
The series is “inspired” by the 2005 movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The biggest change as far as I can see is that, unlike the couple from the movie, Mr & Mrs Smith of the series work for the same secret agency.
In the first scene, I thought for a moment that they were screening the wrong show. Instead of Donald Glover and his costar Maya Erskine. Alexander Skarsgard and Eiza González were featured. The reason was revealed quickly. They were the “old” Mr & Mrs Smith, and their top secret agency would soon need to hire replacements.
The first episode is intercut with Glover (John Smith) and Erskine (Jane Smith) being interviewed individually for their new jobs; and the duo as they conduct their first mission. The organization is so secret, they are interviewed via text message by someone codenamed “Hihi”
Glower and Erskine are hired, given a luxury brownstone in NYC, and plenty of gun and other weapons at their disposal. The audiences learns two important details - both previously worked for organizations like the FBI or CIA and were released (fired?). They couldn’t get jobs elsewhere but were recruited via email for this one. It sounds like it’s well paid AND neither of them have any qualms about killing.
Extended portions of both episodes involve the two awkwardly discussing their situation. They only just met and need to pose as a married couple. But they are are reluctant to share any personal details of their former lives with each other. And they seem to know nothing about their employer. These conversations involve lots of pregnant pauses. To be honest, it wasn’t clever banter. I grew impatient with the slow pace.
In their two missions it appears Mr & Mrs Smith were being tested by their employer. Although their behavior during the missions might have been played for laughs, I wasn’t impressed with the espionage skills, nor their ability to communicate with each other. It’s implied that their employer wasn’t too impressed either, based on the last text message sent.
The show is a black comedy with gallow’s humor - which can sometimes be fun. But the character played by Glover and Erskine are the stars of the show. If I’m going to watch them for 8 episodes I need to like them on some level. But both came off too indifferent to life. So why should I care if they live or die?
I think if you’re a fan of Donald Glover you’ll probably like “Mr & Mrs Smith”. But I think I’ll pass.
Unintentional Ironic Humor:
Before the screening started, the audience was told not to uses smart phones to call, text, or take photos. BUT in the middle of one mission there is a scene where the Smiths conduct an extended texting each other in a theater while a play is being performed. WTF? I guess it’s a case of “Do as I say” not “Do as I do”.

"It's a simple alternative question, Harls." He shrugged casually. "If that one's hard for ya, then I dunno what isn't. Perhaaaaps YOU should quit drinkin' liquids that uh, numb the mind." @chaoticjoke
Tumblr media
❛ That's not a hard question… Aaaand, I will stop drinking when yer stop playing with yer toys. ❜ IN FACT, IT WAS her way of purposely digging if he was spending time with the Riddler. Albeit, he knows how to get on her nerves. ❛ Whatcha ya want, puddin' ? ❜ She asked suspiciously, looking at him from head to toe… As if she was expecting some tricks. If he wants her back, then he should work better.

🎬 : Perfect Days (2023) - Dir. Wim Wenders

We rode the Hogwarts Express from Hogsmeade Station the other day with a couple from Arkansas.
They were thirty-ish (I'm guessing) and we talked places to go and definitely places to not go in the Seattle/Pacific Northwest area.
We'd been down here a few days already and they were just getting started and it came up quickly they'd done more than we had in the time they were in the parks. Interestingly, they were not of the same mind about theme park strategy: one preferred getting as many rides in as possible during the full course of each day; the other would've preferred a much slower pace.
We were on a hotel elevator the other day with a gentleman from Great Britain who led our conversation with "I'm absolutely shattered. I need a few days off to recover from my vacation."
We were in line for Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, a fifty minute wait to actually get on the ride. We saw a number of people who looked pretty wiped out already and at least one person who looked, dare I say...
Hung-over.
Whoops.
There are exhausted families returning to the hotel each end of day. Families with small children. Families pushing strollers and carriages. There are all ages of kids here who are fully exhausted and overstimulated. There are non-verbal little ones who are throwing massive wing dings.
We talked to a number of parents so far, all of whom (of the ones with whom we spoke) are especially sensitive to crafting breaks from the walking and overstimulation for their kids.
It's the same thing we wrestled with over the years on our own family vacations. I think the first time we took Linzy to Disney World she was three years old. And yeah. Breaks were a huge, non-negotiable deal. And then later when she was a teenager, one of her friends came with her and one afternoon started to shut down. Kimmer figured out the remedy for recharging pretty quickly and we were all able to enjoy the rest of our day.
There's no doubt there's this feeling you've gotta do it all. Ride all the rides. See all the shows. Go to the next park. Ride all the rides. See all the shows.
Rinse.
Repeat.
It's a vicious cycle, one at which we've been able to succeed far more than we failed.
Thank God.
I've gotta say, this trip we're on right now to celebrate our 31st wedding anniversary... we've been especially effective at maintaining our theme park/life balance. We are not driving ourselves crazy. We are not maxxing out the number of hours we spend in the park against the number of hours we're actually, you know, up.
There's a lot of walking and discovery this time around, not just waiting in line. There's a lot of appreciating where we are, what it looks like, how it sounds, how it feels, rather than a relentless moving from line to line to line. We're enjoying the food and drinks, not looking to dash from the table as soon as we're done. We're taking lots of pictures...
Of course.
And we're seeing new things while managing not to race from ride to ride, place to place, and park to park.
There's a degree of relaxation we're tapping into this time, I guess is what I'm saying. It's not frenetic. And we're having more peaceful moments beyond all the bustle than ever before. We're getting more chances to just talk to people along the way.
So yeah.
Gotta say this is a lovely way to experience our vacation.
Note to self:
Do this again.
😍☺️😎🤩🌞❤️

Who do you guys think each of them would main in mario kart (my headcanons under the cut)
Tumblr media
Jodio - Shy Guy (specifically the dark blue version)
Lowkey a pro at this game. Likes to challenge himself in time trials and knows all the best cart combinations. If there is a shortcut on the track, he WILL take it (and will almost always be successful). Actually enjoys Rainbow Road (the real reason for his psychopath diagnosis).
Tumblr media
Dragona - Pink Gold Peach (I could see them picking Daisy too)
Just there to have a good time tbh. At least most of the time, because every now and then when they're doing particularly well their competitive streak kicks in, and trust me – once they get into it, they get REALLY into it (cross them at your own risk). Favorite track is Cheep Cheep Beach.
Tumblr media
Paco - Bowser
He thinks gaming is dumb and a waste of time (definitely not because he sucks at it). On the rare occasion he does get convinced to play, he keeps bumping into walls and other players (it doesn't help that he picks one of the heaviest characters in the game). Known for notoriously running into banana peels. Gaming sessions usually end in him "inviting" the other players to the gym.
Tumblr media
Usagi - Luigi
Relates to Luigi on a personal level for being the underappreciated helper of the group. He's actually quite good at the game. His aim is freakishly accurate and he loves to hoard items to target other players (for unknown reasons they seem to hit everyone but Dragona). Similarly to Jodio, he takes shortcuts almost every chance he gets, but unlike Jodio, it doesn't always go so well. Also probably likes Baby Park like the freak he is.
Tumblr media
Charmingman - Dry Bones
Used to play with Mauka a lot, so he's surprisingly good, and can get quite competitive too. Drives solely on bikes, which give him some good ol' maneuverabilty to avoid all those damn banana peels Usagi keeps throwing around. Secretly loves the music tracks and sometimes listens to them while riding his bike irl, imagining himself to be in a race. Favorite item is Boo.
