Dark Soulmates AUs

Soulmates are supposed to live and die together. That means as soon as soulmates lay eyes on each other, their souls get entwined, so that if one dies the other does too. It has become quite common to hire people that specialize in finding and killing soulmates, so that they never randomly meet them and risk dying through them.

Words can get written on each other's body, but every single letter appears as a wound, leaving nasty scars that won't go away.

Being away from your soulmate will lead to excruciating pain, if they go too far, both soulmates will die.

Soulmates get the same injuries, so it is not uncommon to see perfectly healthy people suddenly collapse with gashing wounds, when their soulmates get into accidents.

The concept of a soulmate being a romantic partner was a fairytale. In this world you share a soul with your worst enemy, having to fight for your life and the right to your soul.

People who don't find their soulmate by a certain age will eventually wither like flowers, not being able to live a life without the second half of their soul.

Soulmates feel each other's pain and criminals use this to torture two people at once.

Every touch from your soulmate will leave an imprint on your body, but everyone can clearly see if it was done in a loving manner or if your soulmate caused you harm. People pity you when they see your imprints.

Starting at age 18, people will stop aging until they find their soulmate to grow old with. Many people don't want to give up possible immortality and hire hitmen to get rid of their soulmates.

Hanahaki Disease: If your love is not getting returned, flowers start growing inside your body, suffocating you from inside. Surgical removal is dangerous and you're dying without your soulmate's love.

(sorry not sorry it came out angsty)

Though most people in the world of the Mushroom Kingdom speak English, they use a different alphabet from the "real" world, so for most of his life Luigi has had no idea what the first thing his soulmate was going to say to him was. He and Mario both looked, for years, but never found anything that looked like the letters on the back of Luigi's hand. Eventually Luigi just resigned himself to being alone for the rest of his life.

(Mario doesn't have a soulmate, which is not uncommon in this universe. It's not really a big deal and people without soulmates follow what we'd consider a more "normal" pattern of dating. Luigi doesn't know, but Mario made the decision to put romance on the back burner so he could support his brother.)

Then they fell into a warp pipe and landed in a world where they could understand everyone, but not read the signs. Luckily Princess Peach is the kind of person she is, and took it upon herself to help them settle in and look for a way home. On one excursion she ends up kidnapped, and Mario decides since she was only out there because of them, it's their responsibility to save her!

It all leads to Mario and Luigi in Bowser's castle, and though Luigi was reluctant to fight a giant fire-breathing turtle dragon, when he sees his brother in trouble he chucks a loose brick at Bowser's head and shouts "Hey! Big guy!"

Bowser turns around, sees a figure with a moustache and a stupid hat, and roars "YOU!" before realizing there's two of them.

They rescue the princess, they're celebrated as heroes, and Luigi and Bowser both more or less forget they spoke at all (Bowser more, Luigi less).

Years pass, including a lot more fights, a few team-ups, and eventually the agreement to try a few friendly competitions to keep things civil. When Luigi discovered his soulmate mark was the local alphabet he was excited, at first, but he's already used to disappointment and he's conflicted about the exact word. Is it angry? Surprised? What if he's doomed to get off on the wrong foot with the person who's supposed to be his partner?

Then one day, at one of those friendly sporting competitions with Bowser and his team, Bowser spots Luigi making a note to himself and suddenly grabs him.

"What's that?"

"What's what?"

"What you're writing. Where did you learn that?"

"It's just how we wrote back where Mario and I grew up, it doesn't mean anything bad."

Bowser suddenly rips the collar off his throat and points at the writing there. "What does this say?"

It says Hey! Big guy! And though Luigi can't be certain (it's been YEARS) he has a horrible horrible feeling that the exchange between his soulmate words and Bowser's is very familiar.

Bowser seems completely oblivious to any of this and just starts asking Luigi where he's from and how to get there. Luigi doesn't even realize why Bowser is asking until he says "I don't know how to get back, Mario and I decided to stay here," and Bowser does NOT like that answer. Luigi can't bring himself to say what he's thinking. Maybe it's not true? Maybe Bowser is right and his soulmate is still waiting for him in Brooklyn?

Bowser talks to Peach after the match is over and says he's sorry but he's finally got a chance to find his real soulmate and he's going to have to end their flirtation. Peach, ever the diplomat, says she understands.

Time passes. Bowser is doing research on his own on how to cross between worlds. But for some reason he keeps coming by and asking Luigi about it. He says it's just to make things easier once he gets there, but after a while they start talking about other things. They start to become something like friends.

One day Bowser mentions how much it hurts to hope after all this time. About how he'd resigned himself to being alone for the rest of his life. Luigi almost confesses then, but he's afraid of how furious Bowser will be knowing that Luigi hid it from him all this time. How can he admit he didn't tell Bowser straight away because he didn't want him?

normally, it’s little things. a handprint on the palm from a handshake. little smudges from bumping into each other. people either go out of their way to touch strangers or completely avoid it.

adam has a single fingerprint on his arm from kristin tapping him to get his attention in class. her index finger is forever stained green to match.

angels have been told they don’t have soulmates, not with each other, not with humans. the rare exceptions are believed to be frauds. michael possesses adam and no mark is left on his skin.

but as time passes in the cage, and adam sees more of michael’s memories, going earlier and earlier, he notices changes in michael’s true form. a smear of gold that only appeared after gabriel was born. purple after raphael, red after lucifer. he notices it in all the angels he sees, how they’re born as colorless beings but grow into rainbows, more or less. he sees swirls of blue in michael now that aren’t there in memories.

one day, he asks michael about it. what color is his soul. what does he look like on the inside. a sort of blue, michael says. all over. very unique; human souls don’t usually have such a cohesive color. just another reason adam is special.

it probably takes michael a while to believe it. he has to look at lucifer on the other side of the cage and match the red circle around the approximation of his shoulders and compare it to the first time he met his little brother, how he pulled him into a hug. how raphael’s wings weren’t always lined in purple, how michael stroked them in the first moments of their existence. how gabriel wasn’t born with golden palms, and how michael wasn’t either.

the blue twisting through him that is the exact shade of adam’s soul, a shade he didn’t see when descending upon the green room.

(he sees chuck, once they’re out, and realizes that he’s the only real fraud. the colors he shows in his powers are false. at his core, god is colorless. loveless and cruel. michael stands before him and accepts death in a body stripped of the paint that made it home.)

A: Soulmate AUs are a reassuring fantasy, because I've had a lot of trouble finding both friendship and romance, and experienced lots of rejection in both areas for things that are not within my control; the idea of a universe where I know from early on if someone will be important to me, and will reciprocate my affection, is one that I find comforting.

B: Soulmate AUs are a disturbing fantasy because they trap people in those worlds within the expectations that one must engage in romance with someone who may very well be a stranger, and reading them feels like an indictment of my choice to avoid romance altogether, or reminds me of the specific limitations that my society or family place on me in regards to who my eventual partner should be.

If you are not one of the above, this post is not for you. Do not comment with 'oh, I just don't think about soulmate AUs.' Please do not be that person.

Soulmate AU ideas (silly and not)

I have a notebook by my bed so I can scribble things down when I wake up in the middle of the night, and a while ago I apparently woke up and needed to write down ideas for Soulmate AUs. Some of them are silly, some of them are not, only a few make sense, but here you go:

Soulmates are rare, but they share the same fingerprints. This is especially troublesome when one of them is on the wrong side of the law.

There are healing qualities between soulmates. Being close to them can help with the healing process, their touch can relieve pain, etc etc.

When soulmates meet for the first time, they stop aging. Which is unfortunate when they meet young, so certain steps have to be taken to show a person's true age. (They still live out a normal lifespan, after)

When they meet their soulmate, their hair starts growing. Too fast, and too long, and it won't stop until they sleep a night with their hair braided together.

When you are a child, you dream of your soulmate. You see snippets of your soulmate, and what could be your life together. Some people remember these dreams and it helps them identify and recognize their soulmate when they meet, but most forget. Many parents write down or record what their children say about their dreams, to help them find their soulmate later in life.

Some people have special bonds with animals (usually cats), and those animals will only really accept your soulmate. Basically, cats continue to be assholes but when they reluctantly accept someone else in your life, you know you've found your Person.

Soulmates balance each other out. If your soulmate is tired, you can choose to sleep for them. If your soulmate is hungry, you can choose to eat for them. If they're in pain, you can carry some of it for them, etc etc.

You start to hear/see snippets of your soulmate's thoughts the first time you touch. They pop up into your brain like intrusive thoughts and are impossible to control at first, but the longer you spend time with your soulmate and get to know them, the less it happens. After some time in a working relationship, you can choose to send thoughts to the other, if they accept them. (Very handy for when you sent someone off to the store and forgot to ask them to buy eggs, too.)

Soulmate bonds can snap, either because of a long distance or from a long time away from each other. A snap is something they can choose to accept, or reject. Either way it can be fatal. The chance for survival increases the younger they are. If they meet again later in life, a bond can be rekindled.

You get headaches/migranes when your soulmate is afraid or their adrenaline levels are high. Nature's way of telling you to get off your feet and do something to help. When your soulmate calms down, your pain disappears at the same speed.

Soulmates share tickles. No, no, listen, this is a good one. When your soulmate is being tickled, you feel those sensations too and can't help but react to them. Even if you're not ticklish beneath your feet, but your soulmate is? You'll still be on the floor, squirming.

Your eyes itch or burn when your soulmate cries. Tears optional, but you always know when they're crying.

There's a growing feeling of unease leading up to your first meeting with your soulmate. The closer you get to them, and the longer you stay in their vincinity, the more your annoyance/unease/pain/cramps increase. It all ends in a whooosh of relief the first time you touch.

Soulmates short out at the first touch. Like, go unconscious. Just, you know, like those fainting goats that go all stiff and fall over? One touch, and they're out like a light. The time they're unconscious depends (and it has not always ended well, depending on the situation). When they wake up, a bond has formed.

This was what my sleep-addled brain decided I had to wake up to write down at like, 3 am. Enjoy.
