From Sacrifice to…Fancy Shmancy Ice Cream: Fulfilling Immigrant Dreams
It’s always a fun challenge to condense everything you want to express into one, single comic panel. This week, I decided to tackle one again.
So, did I actually spend $85 on six pints of ice cream? Yes because Jeni’s Ice Cream is SO delicious and I really want to try the homemade banana bread and pineapple upside down cake which are not available anywhere near me. So, delivery it is.
Did my husband think me insane? Yes. But, he has his Transformers and I have my…fancy shmancy ice cream.
Also, my birthday and Mother’s Day are coming up. Gifts of appreciation for myself are well deserved ????

This is a more developed sketch of "Pet" which will be an illustration about the fetishization of Asian people by non-Asians. It is heavily referenced from an image I found in an article, I've posted the image below is an earlier post.

Scottie Choy, Christian Husband Father
Calvin's dad. Scottie approaches things in life with a sense of optimism and eagerness to overcome challenges in order to be the best Head of the Family as God ordains it. Coming from a stricter and family background, he tries to do his best to be understanding and less authoritarian with his own kids. However, he can get carried away with wanting to impress his friends in his personal life which Cal and Chelsea find super goofy but they shrug and let him do his thing

Happy AAPI month! I wanted to do something Palestine-related so here’s a wedding costume and breakdown from Al-Dahiriya, a village south of Hebron in the West Bank.

Meet the Artist: @blackburrie
Hi! I’m BlackBurrie (Apollo) and I’m a second-generation Korean American artist. I’m trying new things with my art and trying to survive college and beyond. My biggest goal is to fully develop my magical girl series called Project MAGICK. I love vivid colors, anything magical, and my friends.
Nice to meet you, BlackBurrie! They have shared some of their art pieces below for you all.
Check out more of BlackBurrie’s work over at their Tumblr, @blackburrie!

Day 14 of my Hair Journal was painting during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AAPI).
I reached out to Professor Wayne Quilliam who specialized in photography of Aboriginal people (who works with the Aboriginal people and gets permission to photograph them) and he gave me permission to reference his photography for my portrait.
https://aboriginal.photography/
For the background, I referenced the traditional Aboriginal Dot Painting.
I always find it so interesting to paint people from all over the world. Though I bet traveling and doing it in person would be far more interesting than from my little Hobbit Hole.
Still... I really enjoyed it.

Where have I been?
Well, for the past couple of weeks after the opening reception of Call and Response: Illustration in Uncertain Times at the Pao Arts Center, I have been sick.
I caught the kiddo's pre-K cough virus which knocked me out for 3 full days. I finally feel alive again even though I have hacking fits here and there.
I'm now super glad I was able to make it to the reception.
Looking forward to improved health and creating more artwork + comics!
