I really cannot understand this fandom. One half of it has been complaining about Adrien's "just a friend” thing for 7 years, while the other half has been proving that friendship and platonic relationships are in no way worse than romance. But somehow this all has flown out of the window as soon as we got romantic pre-reveal Adrienette and platonic Ladynoir.

It's become increasingly obvious to me that some people in this fandom never truly understood the love square. The outrage I've seen operates as if they are separate people, but they're not. The "true selves" mindset is still a bullshit way to make one side seem better than all the rest and isn't rooted in canon no matter how many mental gymnastics people do to justify it. I mean how many times does canon have to say that they are the same people with or without the mask before it sticks for some people and they understand that the love square is ONE SHIP with 4 unique dynamics as a result of secrets. That has always been its appeal. If I see another "the love square is dead bc adrinette is canon now" post I'm gonna scream. The love square as a set of 4 dynamics comprising one ship isn't dead just because one side got together. There has always been platonic dynamics in the square, and saying the other sides are "dead" just because they're platonic is just evidence that people don't know how the square works. The only thing that will ever dissolve the love square is a reveal because that is the only reason we have the love square in the first place. If the kids always knew their identities, we wouldn't have had it. So as long as they don't know their secret identities, the love square dynamics still exist, they are just different now. Something finally changed and development happened, and now people are mad because it wasn't the side they wanted? As if the development of all sides aren't linked and one day going to morph into a unique post reveal dynamic that takes from each side? I mean, it's not like one side hates each other, damn. All sides are pretty much good with each other at this point.

As I've said numerous times, the Adrinette development needed to happen this season. Clearly, or they wouldn't have done it. Marinette's issues stemmed from loving Adrien, so the only way for her to work through them so they can have a healthy post reveal dynamic is for her and Adrien to work through their romantic issues together as a couple. She has no qualms being his friend. All of her stammering and fumbling was always linked to love. The panic she has felt around him this season was linked to love. And I'm glad they're addressing it and finally helping her become comfortable around him. That development is long overdue. Them dating is a good thing, some people in the fandom just never quite grasped the concept that they're all the same people, so they made up this version of canon in their heads where their favorite side was the star of the show and most correct while the rest were just for show. There is no "most correct" side, even with one of them dating. That mindset is reductive and stems from lack of understanding of the characters and their relationship. Even as an Adrinette stan, I'm not saying Adrinette is better than the other sides bc they're the side that has stuck romantically. All of the sides are important and have offered important key development for the ship as a whole. Adrinette couldn't have gotten where it is today without the other 3 sides and vice versa. All of the development is for the benefit of the post reveal dynamic. That is what this show has been building to since day 1.

Honestly, some people in this fandom love showing their ass too much. As someone who has actually watched all of the released eps, the plot this season is actually the best we've had. The development is great and believable (for the most part), the adrinette is simultaneously the sweetest and most angsty shit I've seen in canon thus far. I haven't enjoyed the show this much since s1, yall. Some people just don't value friendship/platonic dynamics and view them as lesser than romantic ones, and it shows. There's no reason to be outraged by the other sides being platonic while one side is dating unless they view platonic relationships as being lesser than romantic ones. It isn't a race, nor a competition, and platonic relationships have just as much value to add as the romantic. They are building to a full completed square where all of the sides dissolve into one dynamic that will be an amalgamation of all sides. Idk why that is hard to understand. RIP to everyone else, but I'm different I guess. 💅

The Miraculous movie took out the interesting parts of the show.

There’s no love square. The main selling point of Miraculous Ladybug, the reason people love it and watch it, is just missing.

The ladynoir in the movie is fine. The dynamic isn’t as good, but considering how little time they had it’s decent. I believe they like each other, and they have some cute moments.

Adrinette is basically nothing. Marinette likes Adrien because the script told her to, and there’s a montage that might be Adrien liking her back? Maybe? This relationship should’ve been massively expanded on or cut entirely.

Ladrien and marichat aren’t there at all. It’s not a big deal. There isn’t much time and I wasn’t expecting those ships.

The problem is that there are no identity shenanigans in the movie. It’s ladynoir with bare scraps of adrinette. There’s no fun to be had with the love square.

The other huge missing piece is that Gabriel isn’t an abuser. He’s just a bad father who couldn’t grieve his wife. He doesn’t have a conscience, but that’s hardly shocking in a rich, white man.

Adrien only bears a superficial resemblance to his tv counterpart.

On the show, Adrien grew up isolated and abused. His mother disappeared and he was trapped in his room to grieve alone. Gabriel controls his every move. He’s so starved for affection he clings to anything that looks like care. He keeps his heart open through everything. Adrien’s hope is unshakeable.

Movie Adrien lost his mother and his father pulled away from him. He closed himself off to avoid the pain. There’s nothing wrong with this character, though he is horribly cliche. He’s just not Adrien.

Marinette’s anxiety is quite well handled. She’s the most competent part of the movie. Her chaos is missing. There are no complex plans, none of the creative genius that makes her Ladybug.

I won’t spoil the ending. All the pieces are fine, it’s just very half-hearted. It doesn’t really land.

What saves this movie is the cringe. It’s by far the best part, but the show also has plenty of cringe. Although, nothing can quite stack up to Careless Whisper as the soundtrack to Adrien’s tears. 10/10, funniest thing I’ve ever seen.

Some thoughts on Miraculous Ladybug in general under the cut. Don't peek if you haven't caught up because i will be discussing season 5 including the finale.

Apologies if this is an incoherent read, i'm just writing as i think, this is just going to be a total mental vomit.

Ok so i had some complicated emotions when watching the finale. It was great in a lot of ways. We had some of the best fight scenes that miraculous has ever had and some undeniably cool moments, but i can't help but feel a little let down?

I think that's partly because of how long it's taken to get here. To call the pacing in miraculous glacial would be an understatement. Nothing much happened to shake up the status quo of Ladybug and Chat Noir fighting a villain of the week for like 4 seasons. Almost everything was world -building up until Gabriel got his hands on the miraculous.

So we had a story that was going slow suddenly going at a breakneck pace in season 5. Suddenly after 4 seasons of nothing happening, everything happens at once. Gabriel is coming out and fighting the heroes personally, Ladybug and Chat Noir are making plans that very nearly beat him and Gabriel gets wounded in a way that puts a timer on the plot. Things now HAVE to start moving faster.

In addition, the love square dynamics change for the first time in the show. It took 5 seasons to do what everyone wanted since season 1. Everything was exciting again!

And then they kinda blew their load on the first jerk??

Gabriel quickly went back to his villain of the week plans, the changes to the love square came and went within the first half of the season and ended up settling on the end of the love square with the least exciting dynamic?

It's pretty telling that the Love square is the most popular hetero ship on Ao3 in terms of number of fics. It has something like 10'000 more fics than the next most popular hetero ship. The love square is exciting in a way that no other ship is and there are people more eloquent than me on here that will wax philosophic as to why that is.

So it's a tradegy that nothing really changed with the love square until 5 seasons in, and then those changes were over in a flash. Flipped Ladynoir was gone in a few episodes, Marichat fucking burned twice as bright but a half as long and poor Ladrien never got a chance. Now i do like Adrinette but it's just a typical high school romance once you take away all the rest of the love square stuff. It's cute, but guess what? So are all of the other ships that i like. They took away what made the love square exciting enough to write 35'000 fics about.

So just about the only things left by the halfway point of the season to look forward to is defeating Gabriel once and for all and an identity reveal.

And NEITHER HAPPEN.

Gabriel actually ends up winning in the end. He gets to make a wish. In the final scene i was literally saying to my screen "WHERE'S THE CATCH??" but apparently there isn't one? Turns out all that pontificating about how a wish cannot be made without a huge sacrifice was for nothing. Maybe there will be a catch but we'll have to wait and see, and who knows how long we'll have to wait to see that plot point come to fruition.

And of course there was no identity reveal. In fact Chat Noir just flat out doesn't participate in the season finale. Let me repeat that. THE AGRESTE DOESN'T PARTICIPATE IN THE FINALE OF THE AGRESTE SAGA. You deserved so much better than being locked in your schrodinger box Adrien. You absolutely should've been there to deck your father in the face.

Sorry if this has come across as a whole bunch of complaining and salt. I just needed somewhere to reconcile my own thoughts. At the end of the day i really do love Miraculous. There's a reason i've been invested since season 1, there's a reason why i've always looked forward to new episodes releasing and why i've spent the last year desperately trying to avoid spoilers. It's clearly has something special even if i can't quite put my finger on it.

Will answer the ones I can 1 . Adrinette. Canon has tarnished the idea of this ship for me, so I don't see the appeal in continuing to root for it to happen. 2. Felila. I don't see Felix and Lila as ever becoming romantically into each other, but they'd definitely be great sneaky evil bros. 3. I think I did over some reflexive Chloe stanning. 4. Again, Adrinette. And yes, it is THE fandom OTP for some reason. 5. No, but canon sure has! 7. Plenty, like Marinette's schoolgirl crush and clumsy stalker antics, the attitudes and beliefs of supporting characters like Alya, the more "human" and "sympathetic" side to Gabriel, the whole shtick of Akumas and Akumatizations, and the character of Adrien/Chat Noir in general. 9. I'm usually very lenient on even my disliked characters, but I've no patience for Su-Han, the definition of a strawman character - by all accounts he's 100% right about much he says, but he's mean to Kwamis and acts like a big jerk so we're supposed to reject his valid points. Also, Thomas Astruc whenever he pops up in his own show. 10. The "Guardian Marinette VS Shadow Moth" arc in Season 4 and basically everything that happened in relation to it, though it at least finished stronger than the previous season did. 11. Mr. Damocles, I guess? Or maybe Lila, but that's a later answer for a later question. 12. I liked "Volpina" more than most fans seem to due to their pre-set expectations for it and its titular character being ridiculous. 13. Zoe IS a better Bee Miraculous holder and superheroine than Chloe but neither sister really earned that right, and Lila ain't the purest evil who ever did evil, the fandom's just mean and the writing incompetent. 14. A good deal of stuff that Astruc has said about the online fandom...actually...wasn't wrong. Still unprofessional, immature, and douchey of him to go off like that, but some of his points stand so long as things like "salt fics" exist to reinforce them. 15. It could still get back on track if Zag plays his cards right, but it will sadly never realize the fullest potential of what it could have been. Seasons 3 through 5 just dropped the ball on that so hard. 16. Basically the whole show following Season 2. 17. I would have retired Hawk Moth after the Season 2 finale and had Mayura as the head supervillain on the next two seasons, then introduce Richard Sphinx to be "Monarch" and bring Null in earlier too. Oh, and instead of Zoe getting the Bee Miraculous and becoming Vesperia in the episode immediately following her debut, I'd wait until she was settled into the side cast and actually did stuff that serviced her as her own character rather than just as a foil to Chloe. 19. All the goddamn salt. This show ain't worth it, folks! Stop taking it and its many failings so damn seriously! 22. Adrien Agreste/Chat Noir. 23. Lila Rossi (or whatever other names and identities she's got) 25. Again, I'd alter the end of the Season 2 finale so that Gabriel looses his Miraculous so now Nathalie has to use the Peacock Miraculous and be the head supervillain who creates Sentimonsters in place of the old Akumatization formula. 26. Zoe Lee. 27. Bob Roth. Even Garbiel can get more action than he could!

adrinette (solid 2/10)

— this ship brings me so many icks i cant even tell you. so far into the series these two have no chemistry i’m sorry, i know marinette is all for adrien but tbh adrien could not care less laksmdnd he sees her as only a friend (best friend at most?) and at times marinette is just so creepy towards him. this isn’t the usual friends to lovers troupe at all so don’t start adrinette kinnies/j i just think marinette needs to understand her feelings aren’t reciprocated and move on. honestly their friendship is cute and i like it- but that’s about all.

ladynoir (8.5/10)

— the huge irony is that the love square are all the same people jsjsjsj. but anyways i definitely prefer this ship over adrinette, they work really well in battles and are great partners. however only cat noir has romantic feelings towards ladybug and although she has stated many times she’s in love with someone else cat noir chooses to pursue her despite her wishes of him not to. this can link similarly with the main issues of adrinette. but other than that they definitely have some great moments.

ladrien (7/10)

— as i’ve mentioned in my option abt adrinette & ladynoir in both ships the romantic feelings are both one sided. however, ladrien is the only love square angle where both people share the same romantic feelings. these two i feel are honestly overhated, sure they don’t really have any relationship growth at all because they are very giddy towards one another. but it’s honestly sweet. wholesome and sweet. but also boring. i do believe they are way overhated but they don’t really call to any interesting appeals.

marichat (9/10)

— i’m going to say this rn. the only way i’ll accept marinette and adrien getting together is if it happens through marichat. both marinette & catnoir have absolutely no romantic feelings towards one another, so therefore if in the future they both do develop feelings for each other they would have learned to love every aspect of their partner. (does that make sense idk if it does jsjsj) but yeah i actually love these two and the dynamic they have.

lukanette (7.5/10)

— spreading away from the love square we have these two babies! i love luka, he deserves the world. and honestly i like lukanette. at times with these two it felt like there was a chance marinette felt the same feelings towards luka that he did for her, but she was always to inflicted by adrien. in a world without adrien i believe they could’ve worked out.

adrigami (9/10)

— please the hate i’m abt to receive for this. i love adrigami. genuinely a good ship and dynamic. fencing gf & bf anyone?? they are extremely overhated and misunderstood. stan adrigami

it may be a tie between in the same sun (ml; adrinette) and bread and oranges (ml: emilie/nathalie)? i normally go for tidy, wrapped up fluffy endings because that's what i like to see, but these are the two fics that i just let myself. not wrap up? like. they end, but there's no ending and that's on purpose, and they could be hopeful but they could also be very sad. and maybe that's angst

oh god i don't know. you could honestly take your pick from the majority of my one shots and 'happiest' is of course subjective but i'll go with: lucky to be yours (ml; adrinette), the shades of reassimilation (pjo; solangelo), and doomed from the start (tma; jonmartin)

one time maryssa said i write very nostalgic and i have since taken that to my head. i think if im in the right headspace i can do dialogue very well too

17. what’s your writing weaknesses?

i don't really like describing environments unless i think it's A Metaphor which means that most of the time my works take place in the bare abstract of places to someone who doesn't share the same brain as me. also: kisses. every time i write them i feel like im being very cliché and therefore try my best to write them as little as possible

18. what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in fic?

i don't really do it unless it's a specific term of endearment (ex. alya calling marinette mignonette which is a personal favorite of mine/the obligatory lovesquare chaton/ adrinette calling each other ma moité in bt) or a little signifier to show a character is speaking a language other than the main language of the fic (eiji saying moshi moshi in hes&osm) because i don't know other languages and therefore am terrified of sounding stupid in another language. also when fics write in prolonged periods of language-other-than-english for seemingly no reason it really breaks my immersion so i try not to do that

19. what was the first fandom you wrote for?

percy jackson. unless you count the harry potter au i wrote when i was 7

Unpopular opinion: I don’t think the movie thing is a proper date. I think neither Chat or Marinette thought of it as “date” in a romantic sense... more like a fun night with a friend 🤔 They still are pretty much in love with Ladybug and Adrien, respectively, as we saw in the next episodes. I’m almost 100% sure the love square won’t “reverse” this episode, though it will probably give a lot of food to Marichat stans. I’d want to ask your opinion about this for a while... Do you think the love square will EVER reverse? In ANY season? Because some fans seem to treat it as a given, that it will inevitably reverse someday, and only then it will be “complete”. But watching the opening of MLB, you see only the original love square. I’ll never believe in reverse love square while the opening doesn’t change that part, lmao. I think the fandom and the creators have different views about the necessity of the love square reversing, probably because the fandom’s favorite ship is Marichat. I like Marichat too, just... wondering.

i don’t think it’s a proper date either, but then, neither were the adrinette or ladynoir movies. i think most of fandom is being tongue-in-cheek when referring to it as a date, but that might just be the people i interact with.

agreed that the lovesquare isn’t reversing this ep — we see adrinette in wishmaker, several episodes later, and while adrien is fond of marinette, his attitude towards her isn’t noticeably any different than optigami or guiltrip. and obviously marinette is still 100% smitten with adrien there.

will it ever reverse though? i don’t think i can say “no” with 100% certainty, but i don’t think we are ever going to get marinette mooning over chat noir while calling adrien just a friend or vice versa. on marinette’s end, she has very strong reasons to stay in denial about any feelings she has for chat noir that have nothing to do with adrien — and as those reasons as closely tied to her reasons for keeping their identities a secret, i can’t see her fully embracing her feelings for chat noir without also embracing an identity reveal. it’s a toss up which will happen first, but i see them going hand in hand.

adrien, on the other hand, seems far more positioned to fall for marinette, because in his case, the only barrier is his feelings for ladybug. sure, there’d be the same potential problems as dating kagami, but adrien hasn’t seemed to really examine that the way marinette did after her breakup, so i think the big obstacle is just his feelings for ladybug… and not knowing that marinette is a romantic option.

but i’m rambling so here’s my final answer: if i had to guess, the show will continue developing adrien’s feelings for marinette and ladybug’s feelings for chat noir, but they’ll never really let go of their original crushes. marinette will continue to deny having any feelings for chat for as long as she can and cling to her her on adrien, while adrien will be more open to moving on but not entirely let go of his first love. then hopefully, if i’m very good and eat my vegetables, thomas astruc will let them reveal before adrinette starts dating and we can get some delicious prpr

I really like what you said about the Love Square dynamic and the comments in the fandom about how people are upset that their side of the square is not canonical in a romantic relationship. I especially liked the words that after the reveal it will be a new ship with its own unique dynamics created from all LS sides. But there are things I worry about after the reveal.

I hate these arguments about which side is better and I fear that even after the reveal, these arguments will get worse. There will be people who will complain about their dynamic after the reveal because it doesn't look enough like their favorite side of LS pre-reveal dynamic, while on the other hand there will be people who will claim that this dynamic is completely taken from their beloved side of the LS. Like, recently I've seen salty Ladynoir's shippers claiming that the post-reveal dynamic will be entirely pre-reveal Ladynoir.

And their statements stand in stark contrast to the show itself, as it teaches Marinette and Adrien to embrace their civilian and superhero identities as one, not to give up parts of their personalities to fulfill their dreams of their romantic dynamic.

First off, that last bit is the best take I've seen in a while, so thank you for that.

Because you're absolutely right. Their arguments are not rooted in canon. People in this fandom have never truly grasped the full concept of the love square. Ever since s1 there has always been this divide among fans of the show. I think other franchises like Twilight or THG series set this weird precedent of dividing people into "teams" for their favorite ships, even though one of them is bound to win out in the end, but the problem with doing that with ML and the love square is it doesn't work. The love square is so appealing because it subverts the typical love triangle because they're the same two people sliced 4 ways because of secret identities. Which is super great and fun and refreshing. But the problem is, people in this fandom have never quite fully grasped that concept, and people fell into the same pitfalls by treating each side as its own entity rather than a part of a whole. It's why MC stans for the longest time bolstered the "true selves" argument because there was a mental disconnect between the sides. Yes, there are unique dynamics to each one, but there is also an incredible amount of overlap because, ya know, they're the same people. But the issue has always been that people put the square in such rigid boxes and fail to understand why the love square is so great. It reminds me of Uncle Iroh's speech about the 4 nations and how you should pull wisdom from all of them. It's the same thing here. There is nuance to every side, but at the end of the day, the love square isn't 4 separate ships, it's one ship with 4 parts working toward a collective whole.

That's why I shake my head at a lot of posts I see around the fandom because people are upset over their own lack of understanding. I've seen it here, on twitter, on Instagram, on tiktok. "The love square is dead because Adrinette is canon" "rip LadyNoir marichat and ladrien" "I've wasted 7 years waiting for Ladybug and Chat noir to get together and it's Adrien and Marinette instead" Like, babes I have some news for you 😂😂 And I'm not saying people have to love every decision canon makes, I know I don't, but the amount of tantrums I've seen people throwing over the flagship of the show getting together is mindboggling. I made a joke to some friends in private about how prior to Elation, MC stans were the most obnoxious group of LS shippers, but truthfully I haven't heard a peep from them since after Elation aired, and it seems LN stans have moved up in their place. I didn't have LN stans becoming the new obnoxious MC stans that ruin the ship for everyone else on my bingo card last year, but here we are. And it's not all of them, just a loud minority I feel. But the annoying thing about loud minorities is that they're, well, loud.

To me, my intrigue with the love square has always been in blending the dynamics between the sides, even in pre reveal. Having a dash of LadyNoir banter and puns in Adrinette, having the sweet and gentle side of Adrien coming out in Chat Noir. They're the same two people, so all of that is inside them all the time. They're both an amalgamation of their two egos, and canon has never shied away from that. That was a huge point of Kuro Neko for Adrien. He's not one or the other, he's both. For Marinette I think specifically of Pretension when she confidently tells Gabriel to go fuck himself then goes outside and has a panic attack. She is both the confident superheroine who helps others and the anxious young girl trying to figure life out just like Adrien is both a goofy furry that makes bad jokes and a gentle and respectful boy who tries to see the best in other people. Canon has been screaming that at us, but some people just are not paying attention.

To assert that they will only be a representation of one dynamic post reveal is just misguided in my opinion. It stems from the lack of understanding that they are both Ladybug/Chat Noir and Marinette/Adrien. I firmly believe the post reveal dynamic will be a blend like I was talking about. Adrinette will confidently flirt. LadyNoir will have deep conversations about life that they never could before. MariChat will makeout on the rooftops. Ladrien will kick each others butt at video games. They'll be silly and sweet. They'll be serious and brave. Each side's development will shape the new dynamic, and I think that new dynamic will have elements we haven't seen yet but also a lot of the elements we've grown to love. It's not going to be just one side prevailing because that has never been the love square. Truthfully, I think a lot of people in the fandom are just too angry to see that right now. A lot of their posts are reactionary and ranty and angry, and the way I see it, those people will either calm down eventually or leave the fandom. Get over it or die angry, as I say. I'm not too overly worried about fandom after this season because I know a huge chunk of people aren't going to stick around. But maybe that's what this fandom needs. Salt and negativity are so easy to come by, and anyone who dares post anything nice or positive are mocked and scorned. The amount of people that have either sent me asks or messaged me privately about being scared to post about liking pre reveal Adrinette openly for fear of LN stans writing posts calling them stupid or blocking them is sad. But that's what our fandom has come to.

So, yeah, I can't say I'll be sad if the aggressive salters leave bc they're mad about pre reveal canon Adrinette. No one should be afraid to post about liking canon for fear of being ostracized. That's incredibly fucked up, and it makes the fandom worse. So, ya know what? I'm happy to take the brunt of it for other people. Salters can vague post about me all they want, but I'm not the one making people feel unwelcome for just trying to have a good time. My ask box is always open if people want to talk about how much they love Adrinette or canon or anything they're not comfortable posting on their own blogs. Fandom is supposed to be fun, so I'm here if anyone wants to just enjoy things. And I'm sorry to anyone who's been made too uncomfortable by salters to enjoy things openly. You guys don't deserve that.

A Very In-Depth Analysis of All 63 Miraculous Love Square Ships

Due to the absurd number of alias’ our two protags have, in actuality, it’s not a love square, its a love hexadecagon (a 16 sided polygon).

Basically, there are six categories we can organize all these ships in, and they are Adrinette, Ladynoir, Marichat, Ladrien, All At Once (also known as Post-Reveal), and Other. Once we group them together in this fashion, it’s a lot easier to comprehend.

Now, trying to understand this monstrosity would be next to impossible (I’m getting a headache just looking at it, and I made it!) so I’ve graciously explained below the cut.

Firstly, we’ll discuss the 16 characters included in this mess. Secondly, we’ll address and review the main four Love Square ships. Lastly, I’ll explain the Other and the All At Once ships. { For simplicity, I’ll always name a ship as (Marinette Alias) / (Adrien Alias) }

Our Characters:

Besides our classic civilians and heroes, I’ll include Princess Justice and the two forms of Chat Blanc: Alternate Timeline (AT) and Normal Timeline (NT). the Alternate will refer to the timeline only seen by Bunnyx, in which the reveal happens over the beret. The Normal will refer to the timeline in which Bunnyx takes Ladybug to Chat Blanc to fix him.

Our classic blush ship is nearly unique, the only ship quite like it is the hypothetical Princess Justice / Adrien. It’s an interesting ship to think about; how they might interact. This can easily veer into Ladrien territory, however. In what little we saw in canon, Marinette starts to take her earrings off immediately in the episode ‘Ladybug’. If Adrien were to connect the dots (or if she says outright, “here hawky, have my miraculous”) then it would easily become a Ladrien dynamic.

With a more normal amount of ships, there are 6 (or 7, as mentioned above) combinations of these two dorks with this unique relationship:

At first glance it’s Adrinette or Marichat, but Marinette knows Aspik is Adrien, but she’s not supposed to know that. So she must pretend she doesn’t. This creates a unique dynamic.

Multimouse / Adrien

Similar to the above ship, Adrien knows it’s Marinette under the mask, but again, he isn’t supposed to know that, so he must pretend he doesn’t know, causing him to act differently then he normally would.

Multimouse / Aspik

Double trouble, since they both know but aren’t supposed to. Yikes.

Princess Justice / Aspik

Essentially the same as Mari / Aspik, she’s just akumatised.

Biker Bug / Adrien

Biker Bug / Aspik

These 2 ships are really problematic because it all dwindles down to how much media coverage the fight with Feast got. It happened at night and doesn’t seem to be mentioned by anyone in Paris ever, and the only witnesses were the late night bus driver and André Glacier.

If Feast was broadcast to the masses, then these would be Ladrien ships.

But if Feast was not broadcast, then Adrien/Aspik would have to pretend Biker Bug is just a girl in motorcycle attire until told otherwise, and therefore falls under the Other category.

Princess Justice / Bananoir

This one is classified as Other, but in reality it is a Marichat ship until otherwise proven Princess Justice is Ladybug. This could happen easily, if she were to give up her miraculous or verbally confess.

Thus concludes the 63 Ships of Marinette and Adrien.

TL;DR: Marinette and Adrien and all their alias’ create a hexadecagon of different combinations, with a total of 12 different dynamics.

Summary:

“Adrien,” Plagg said softly, “It’ll rain soon.”

“Let it.”

His voice was vicious. Desperate.

He wanted to go home. But he really, really didn’t want to go back.

The rain started hitting his face harshly, punishment for his indecision. Adrien wanted to curl up in his bed and cry, but he didn’t want to ever see his too-white, too-big room again.

“Adrien?”

His eyes snapped open, focusing past the blur of water to the person who had spoken.

“Marinette?”

Or, Adrien finds himself alone in the rain, trying to find home, and Marinette lends him her umbrella.

Adrien’s lips pulled into a bittersweet smile, “I think that’s the least of our worries.”

Plagg sighed, hovering just above his shoulder, “At least transform into Chat Noir.”

Adrien shook his head, “You’re tired, and I’m running out of cheese.”

Plagg sighed, and didn’t say, then maybe we should go back.

Adrien’s never going back to that manor. Father could try dragging him kicking and screaming, but he was never going back.

(He had said that before. So many times.)

The wind picked up, the chill of late October stinging against Adrien’s exposed skin. He was underdressed and overwhelmed, with nothing but his school bag and his phone. His calls to Nino and Chloe had both fallen through, the reception bad because of course his luck ran that way. Adrien truly did feel alone.

Alone, but away from that wretched house.

He closed his eyes, leaning his head back against the park bench. At least he was free here.

(A terrible, nagging part of his mind that sounded so much like Father told him, you’ll go back eventually, he’s your dad, you’ll forgive him like you always do .

That part of his mind, cold and quiet, called this little stunt for what it was - a childish tantrum.)

Tears stung at his eyes.

“Adrien,” Plagg said softly, “It’ll rain soon.”

“Let it.”

His voice was vicious. Desperate.

He wanted to go home.

Plagg said nothing, finally realising that Adrien was serious about staying out. He settled onto Adrien’s shoulder, a comforting weight. He didn’t try to talk Adrien out of this stupid bit of rebellion, but he didn’t encourage him either.

Plagg always gave him space to figure things out for himself.

He appreciated that, but after a life of being told what to do, Adrien wasn’t sure how to figure things out.

The first droplets of rain are kind, a gentle warning. Adrien refused to budge. His heart hammered against his ribs, a steady rhythm that only picked up with the downpour.

Go back, Adrien tried to tell himself. Back to the manor, where it was cold but at least not drenched. Back to Father, who would hug him and say never leave me and it would be more suffocating than comforting. Back to his life, as Adrien Agreste, the perfect little model.

But he really, really didn’t want to go back.

The rain started hitting his face harshly, punishment for his indecision. Adrien wanted to curl up in his bed and cry, but he didn’t want to ever see his too-white, too-big room again.

“Adrien?”

His eyes snapped open, focusing past the blur of water to the person who had spoken.

“Marinette?”

She shifted her umbrella awkwardly, “Uh, hi. You’re wet - no, I mean, er - getting wet - “ she trailed off.

Adrien smiled fondly, “Yeah. What are you doing out here?”

“I was running an errand for my parents,” Marinette managed to say, with minimal stammering, “You?”

Her eyes were wide and concerned and warm against the autumn wind.

Though he counted Marinette as a friend, he couldn’t say they were close. He didn’t know how much to tell her, if anything at all. Had he been behind his mask, he wouldn’t have hesitated at all, but he never knew where Adrien stood with her.

Still, Marinette was dear to him, and always had a habit of showing up when he needed her most.

“I’m not sure what I’m doing here,” Adrien admitted quietly, “Or what I’m doing at all,” he scoffed, "Or where to go."

“Come home with me,” Marinette said boldly. Then, "Not - not home WITH me - I meant - come to my house - the bakery that is - at least, it’s out of the rain - and it’s close - "

She trailed off, smiling nervously, angling her umbrella so that it was covering him.

He couldn’t really say no. And the thought of macarons were always enticing.

“Thank you, Marinette,” Adrien said, “I promise to be out of your hair as soon as the rain clears.”

“Don’t be silly, you can stay forever - um, as long as you like, I mean.”

The bakery was much closer than Adrien had thought. Stepping into its warmth, Adrien was hit with the aroma of freshly baked pastries, which made him instantly hungry.

“My parents aren’t in,” Marinette said as she left the umbrella by the door, “Do you want something to eat?”

Everything, “Sure.”

“I’ll get you a towel too.”

Marinette got them so much tooth-rotting sugary goods that Father would flip if he saw them, which only made Adrien devour them with glee. Marinette giggled when Adrien got cream on his nose and tried to lick it off, completely forgetting he didn’t have Chat’s tongue right now.

They sat by the window, the steady pitter-patter soothing the last of Marinette’s nerves - enough for her to crack a pun about pastries, one that Adrien had to use next time around Ladybug. She laughed when he shared the story about the time he and Chloe had eaten enough sweets to make them sick, and he gasped at her story about how her dad invented a new kind of muffin recipe.

By the time they were finishing off the last macaron, Adrien had forgotten all his previous worries.

It all came crashing back however, when Marinette said, “I noticed your dad didn’t sign the form today. For the trip to Nice.”

Adrien flinched, “No, he didn’t.”

“How come?”

She was more curious than judgemental, which was why Adrien felt comfortable enough to confess, “I think he’s punishing me.”

Marinette drew back, “What? Why?”

“I messed up a photoshoot the other day. There was an akuma attack and I had to … go hide - I guess it’s not really an excuse - but - “

Marinette slammed down the glass she’d been drinking from, “That is SO unfair!”

Adrien shrugged, “It’s nothing new. He might just be being protective, I don’t know. Though … I sort of decided to not go back home today, because of it,” he laughed, “Overdramatic, I know.”

“He’s the one being overdramatic!” Marinette frowned, “Does Nino and Chloe know? I’m telling them, we’re kidnapping you. I’ll tell Alya too, she’ll tell the whole class,” she paused at her phone, “Should I tell Kagami and Luka? They’re not even on the trip …”

Adrien felt his insides warm. Hearing their names out loud … he sometimes forgot how many people he had, that cared for him.

Had he really been worrying over where home was, when he had already known?

“Marinette,” he said softly, “It’s okay. Thank you.”

“It’s not okay,” she pouted, but relented by putting her phone down.

“I know he loves me,” Adrien sighed, “I just wish he’d show it more.”

“Oh Adrien,” she reached over, covering his hand with hers, “I’m so sorry you have to go through that.”

“Yeah,” Adrien smiled, “Thank you.”

“You can stay here tonight if you like.”

Outside, the rain had slowed to a drizzle.

“It’s okay,” he said softly, “I think I’m okay now.”

Marinette didn’t seem to be pleased, but she didn’t push it, “At least take the umbrella with you.”

“I couldn’t - "

“It’s yours,” she blushed, “You - uh - gave it to me. First day of school.”

“Oh,” he grinned, “You kept it.”

“I forgot to give it back,” she softened, “Anyway, I think you need it more than me. For the next time it rains.”

Adrien gulped, blinking back the stinging in his eyes. He cleared his throat gently, “Um, before I go. This might sound weird, but do you have any cheese?”

Marinette laughed, “I do, actually! I keep it around for ... stray cats.”

It took Adrien a moment to realise she was talking about Chat Noir.

“You’re an amazing friend, you know that?” Adrien blurted out.

Marinette grinned, “I’ve been told. And you are too, don’t you forget it!”

Outside, holding plenty of cheese and pastries and one well-used umbrella, Plagg peeked out of Adrien’s jacket.

“Feeling better?” he asked.

“Yeah.”

Plagg snorted, “Then let’s go home. Your dad’s worried.”

“I doubt Father even noticed.”

“Other dad.”

Adrien had no idea what Plagg was talking about until he checked his phone, only to be bombarded with seventeen worried messages from the Gorilla.

“I’m in trouble, huh?”

Plagg only laughed.

Adrien grinned back, looking up at the sky. The rain had come to a stop now, leaving the skies grey, but the world clearer.

Author's Note: When I tell you this fic refused to cooperate with me, I mean that I had 5 stories in my head and came up with the 6th this morning. At least I had fun writing the rain as a metaphor!

Platonic Adrinette is an under-used gem, they are such a wholesome duo. The ship is fine, but nothing beats friendship <3

Also, on Gabriel - I don't doubt that he cares about Adrien, but sometimes caring isn't enough. In this case, it DEFINITELY isn't enough.
