chishiya jolts awake, a little shaken from his nightmare. it’s dark outside. party lights from the pool shine through the window, illuminating the room. your side of the bed is still empty. it’s cold under his hand when he leans over to brush against the sheets.
your game must have dragged on longer than expected. there aren’t many people outside, most of them sleeping or drunk out of their minds due to the late hour. chishiya sits up, forcing himself to take a few breaths to calm down. nights have always been hard- game nights especially. the silence is a welcome change in the usual chaos of the beach.
chishiya lays back down, staring at the ceiling for a few minutes. it feels eerie to be alone in a hotel room without you there. he sighs, letting his mind wander in the darkness. it won’t be long before the beach implodes into itself. how will you get out before that happens? why haven’t any face cards shown up yet? what about the ten of hearts?
he isn’t sure how long it’s been when the door quietly swings open. you squint at him in the darkness, walking closer. “why are you up?” your voice is quiet.
“couldn’t sleep.” chishiya whispers. you hum, setting your jacket on a nearby chair before pulling your shirt off. you spread it out flat on the table before crawling underneath the blankets to lay next to him.
chishiya shifts to lay on his side, facing you. he can barely make out your features in the moonlight. you look exhausted. you always do after games. he moves his hand to lay a little closer to you, grateful when you reach out and take it into yours, intertwining your fingers together. “bad game?”
you sigh, moving your other hand underneath your pillow to support your head. “ten of clubs. use matches to find numbers in the rooms and win a bingo.” chishiya rubs his thumb against your knuckles. your hands are soft against his. you shift to move a little closer to him. after a few minutes of nothing but your quiet breathing, he hesitantly reaches over to you. his hand is awkward as it rests on your waist but you don’t say anything. instead, you move even closer with a small smile until you’re fully pressed against his chest. chishiya tucks his chin on top of your head. you wrap your arm around his waist, pulling him even closer.
he still feels a little awkward, not used to having you so close to him. but when your breathing relaxes and your eyes flutter closed as you fall asleep in his arms, chishiya allows himself to be vulnerable. he presses a kiss against your forehead before closing his eyes himself, following your lead into a restful sleep.

✶ ˖ ࣪ ਏ 𝗛𝗢𝗪 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗬 𝗠𝗘𝗧 ਓ 🌨️ ۪ ♡ ۫
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ To be honest, the way they met was quite cliché. You have always been passionate about medicine and the first opportunity you had, you couldn't help but study this profession.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ You were always first in your high school class, so it was no different in college. Exemplary, punctual, polite, hardworking and, obviously, very smart. It didn't take long for you to complete your internship at a university hospital. To be clearer, because of your intelligence as a healthcare professional, she was one of the youngest students to do an internship.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ The first time he saw Chishiya was in the doctors' break room. You were interested because he was a pediatric cardiologist. You couldn't stop thinking about how a strong and mysterious man like him could deal with children so easily, especially in such critical states that most of his patients were in.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ It was difficult for you to engage in a conversation with him, as he felt more comfortable with patients than with his co-workers themselves. And it was even more surprising when he started a random topic with you when you coincidentally got coffee from the espresso machine at the same time.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ In his opinion, you were too dull for someone like him to get to you...but he proved the total opposite. Chishiya actually thought you were the most interesting in that place. A Brazilian exchange student who was able to stand out so brilliantly in that place. It was fascinating for him to see a woman a little younger than him be so bold and smart.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ It was always the same, an exchange of words when they were resting, an exchange of glances when they bumped into each other in the corridors. Until you, unexpectedly, asked for his number. This surprised both of them, but especially you. She was always so into herself, despite being smart, social issues weren't exactly her strong suit.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ Over time, you started going out, becoming more and more friends. Despite being opposites, you had more unusual than you thought. They were both determined in their goals and ambitions, they always help those they really care about, perhaps you more than him, but it is still a common topic.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ After 6 months of friendship, the familiarity and comfort between you only grew... and other feelings too. I couldn't deny it, initially neither of them had any romantic interest in each other, just admiration. But with time, you understand Chishiya and he loved the feeling of having someone who truly understood him and didn't judge him.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ He honestly didn't feel comfortable talking to anyone, but even though it wasn't common, you were the only one he felt safe opening up to without any fear. To him you were like an angel, always there to help him and sometimes he wondered if he was there in the same way for you.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ You were always very honest with your feelings so it wasn't a taboo for you. But you loved the way he treated you. You felt unique, special. And that was exactly what you were to him.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ You are definitely made for each other and can clearly be soulmates in living form. After a year of friendship, their feelings could no longer be hidden. They both knew they loved each other so it wasn't difficult to declare each other.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ It was so simple, but so special for you. They were happy to finally have a weekend off and decided to celebrate together. You usually went to your favorite restaurant, since he always let you choose, but this time they decided to just prepare a simple dinner together and then sit on their terrace to drink some wine while talking about trivial matters.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ His chair was very close to Chishiya's chair. Both were slightly drunk, you a little more, but the two of you weren't exactly sober. You placed your glass on the small white table that was in front of you. You adjusted your leg that was resting comfortably on Chishiya's thigh.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ You looked at each other for a while without saying anything. You knew that words didn't need to be described for this moment. A comfortable silence reigned between you, until it was broken with a statement from Chishiya. "You can." "What?" You asked calmly, but still confused. "You can do it, whatever you're thinking, I don't care." He said in his usual low and calm tone. "...same?" You said. "...same."
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ You wasted no time and approached, still calmly, his lips. At first it was a slow and deep peck, which deepened into a real kiss. Still with your lips connected, you climbed onto Chishiya's lap, overcome with emotion. He didn't complain, just squeezed her waist in confirmation, wishing more than ever that I could repeat this moment over and over again.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ You didn't know that this kiss could trigger such an admirable and true relationship between you.

( 𝗶𝗻 𝗕𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 ) ਓ 🌨️ ۪ ♡ ۫
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ You merely remember the day you arrived together with Chishiya in Borderland. Maybe it was like a blur, but the only thing he remembers was that you were together. Chishiya merely felt guilty for joining you in this. He thought that, Maybe if you weren't with him, you wouldn't be in this horrible place knowing you could die at any moment. Of course, both he and you are too intelligent to die suddenly, but it's still an event.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ You were slightly scared by how much he closed himself off after entering Borderland. In fact, he was always a little closed off to people, but never to you. Now on the beach, he didn't treat you with so much affection in front of people. He didn’t treat you badly, but he wasn’t the affectionate type like he used to be.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ but he didn't behave like that because he doesn't love you anymore, but rather so that you wouldn't be an easy target if someone wanted to hurt you, for example, the Niragi or the militia itself. You understood him and only helped him when he needed it.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ He wasn't surprised when you did so well in games, both physical and rational. You were a great athlete in high school and that was one of the many reasons he didn't care about your death.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ A very important topic in your relationship is trust, which means you tell each other everything. Which led to his great disappointment when he betrayed Arisu and Usagi behind his back. He knew that you hate people who use others, or take advantage of the most innocent, so he didn't tell you anything about his plan.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ When the mess at Praia started, you were still fighting with him, which made him worried. The only thing he knew how to do was think about you. He thought that maybe because you were in such a delicate moment emotionally, you weren't reasoning correctly.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ After he found you and saw that you were okay, he became calmer. So he just dragged you along the beach to find a way to get out of there and to do that they knew they needed to act rationally and not just physically.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ After he explained that he took the letters just to see you well and free from that horrible place, you forgave him. Your relationship was finally stable, and even though you were worried about the picture cards, you were okay being together.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ After the chaos on the beach and the fact that you were separated from the rest of the group, you had many existential and anxiety crises. He helped you as much as he could with this, even more so when he realized that his support meant a lot to you.
𐐪♡︎₊˚ _ No matter where you were or what phase you went through, as long as you are well enough to finally get out of there together, you will be happy.

Risk It All (27)- Temporary Goodbyes
Tumblr media
Genre: Chishiya X F!reader | eventual smut | angst
Warning: none for this!
A/N: ignore me spam posting these 😭

Tumblr media
It had been four days since AN  and Kuina had arrived, you'd spent the first catching up, the second discussing the borderlands, and the third making a run to the closest store which went surprisingly well considering  Chishiya had to explain the way from home and the fourth dragging Chishiya from bed to join the land of the living once again.
His wounds had healed enough to walk around, barely....
"I said no Chishiya." You slammed the cupboard door. "It's too dangerous."
"If I don't go my visit is going to run out." He retorts. "There are no choices here."
You huff, blowing a strand of hair out of your face. "We don't even know if we need visas anymore."
"I'm not risking it and I know you won't either." You know Kuina and An can hear everything, it's not like the walls are thick but you're thankful they let you both have your privacy. "We don't know when the next game will start."
You pull out a packet of rice and pour it into a pot. "Don't use terms like 'we' when you decide this all on your own."
"I did but you shouldn't expect any different." You can practically hear him shrugging. "I have to leave today."
"You can't even walk let alone win a game!" You shout, the bag of rice ripping open and spilling everywhere. "Fuck."
"Let me help." Chishiya says, limping over to you. "Just sit do-
"Stop trying to baby me! I can handle a bag of spoilt rice Chishiya. You can't handle an adult conversation where you discuss something as important as joining another game yet you can help me clean up unimportant messes?"
He frowns. "That's not what you're mad about."
You know it's not. "Whatever just go away."
"I'm leaving to enter the game today." He reminds you.
"I know."
"Are you going to join?"
You shake your head. "I don't need to, not yet."
He nods. "How many days on your visa?"
It hadn't been something you'd begun to worry about, the time was more than enough. "I think 11"
"I'll be fine." He mumbles.
You hate that he seems to understand why you're upset. "I know you will."
"You're scared." He points out as though it's not obvious.
You forgo cleaning the rice in favour of pushing your way into his arms. "I'm terrified, what if you don't come back?"
"I will." He reassures you, his hand hesitantly brushing against your waist. "Don't think about pointless things like that, if I die you just keep going."
"Don't say stuff like that!" You smack his arm, tears threatening to fall. "You can't die Chishiya."
"Why?" He asks, pulling back a little to look at you.
The words are no more than a whisper but you knew he heard them considering how close your bodies were.  "Because I need you."
He laughs, shaking his head. "You don't need anyone, I don't need anyone, you want."
"Fine then I fucking want you okay. Is it so bad I want you to be safe?"
"I will be."
It's easy to ignore the way your nose grows stuffy as you shed a few tears. "You don't know that."
"I do."
"How." You mumble into his chest.
He looks the the ceiling as though genuinely considering his answer. "Because you don't know how to fix the power generator if it goes out and I'm pretty sure if it does you'll die which although seems great because I'll never have to hear you complain again is more trouble than it's worth considering the fact there's a great chance you'll follow me to the afterlife, which by the way I don't believe it, and you'll continue to be just as irritating there too."
You push him away in favour of going back to clean the rice. "I should have let you bleed out on the doorstep.
"You wouldn't do that." He laughs
You ask him. "Why are you so sure?"
"Because I fucking need you." He imitates you.
It's almost like a reflex when you throw the broom at him. "Fuck you."
"Can't, don't have condo-"
Kuina pushes past Chishiya, opening up the cupboard containing the canned food. "This looks fun but I'm hungry."
Chishiya glares at you whilst you hold back a laugh, your chest shaking as you try to be quiet.
"Can't wait to leave." You hear him mutter as he sits down at the table.
Kuina looks at him before pointing to the hall. "Door is right there."
"Great, now I won't get lost." He thanks sarcastically.
You watch them bicker as you tip the dirty rice into a bag, a smile on your face as you force yourself to forget the fact that in a few hours, the house that had become somewhat of a temporary home would be lacking one crucial person.
Lunch passes by as no more than a blur, the food you'd helped Kuina make sitting practically untouched on your plate by the time everyone else had finished. "You weren't hungry?" An asks, taking your plate as you'd asked.
"Not really." You force a smile. "I'm going to lay down for a little I think my head is starting to hurt."
You don't wait for a response from anyone before you pull yourself up, walking directly to the bedroom and closing the door behind you.
It turns out that forgetting Chishiya would be gone was harder to forget than you'd ever imagine.
You don't ask who it is when there's a knock on the door, your instincts know who it is before they walk inside. "You're being a crybaby."
"Fuck you." You know it is probably ineligible from the way your face is buried in the pillows that you and Chishiya share but you don't care. "Go away."
The bed dips as he sits down."I'm not going away, not until later."
"Stop making jokes."
"Look you're right, I could die but I won't and if I do you'll be okay. I told you not to fall for me, not here but you didn't listen and this is what the outcome is. I won't baby you and tell you that it's going to be fine because we both know what could happen but I'd rather not leave here with you being sad and depressed." You force yourself to look at him despite how awful you must appear.
"Because you'd struggle in the game if I was sad?"
He snorts before schooling his face when he catches your expression. "I wouldn't let it affect me so no but afterwards it would be annoying."
"If there even is an afterwards." You say aloud with it thinking.
"I haven't lost a game up to now and I won't anytime soon so stop being ridiculous and come and show me how to play this stupid card game you kept mumbling about ." He pulls the blanket off you.
You manage to smile at the way he remembered the conversation you'd had two days ago. Chishiya, still unable to get out of bed, you'd wanted to try and keep him company, but despite your 30-minute pleading session for him to let you teach him a few of your favourite card games he had refused.
"Chishiya?" You grab his hand before he opens the door.
He spins on his heel to face you. "Yeah?"
"Please don't die on me."
"I won't." He smiles, pulling the door open.
Kuina and An are already sitting around the makeshift table, the deck of cards in the middle with various snacks dotted around the floor.
You take a seat on one of the pillows, Chishiya sitting beside you. Kuina catches your eye, mouthing an "Are you okay?"
You nod with a smile, despite knowing you looked sad. You wanted to enjoy today, even if it was for a short while you could pretend like everything was normal. "Isn't it morbid playing card games considering where we are?"
You laugh at the question An asks as she shuffles the cards. "Not really, I think it's kind of ironic."
"Idiotic more like." Chishiya scoffs.
You and Kuina both roll your eyes at the comment, An seemingly unbothered as she hands you the pack of cards to which you deal out equally.  "So the name of the game is called cheat but some people call it-"
"Bullshit." An finishes.
You raise your eyebrows at her. "You know it?"
"Of course I do." She laughs. "I'm the best at it."
"I doubt it."
You both laugh, as Kuina and Chishiya stare at you both in confusion. "The game also has another name, some people refer to it as "I doubt it."
"Ohhhhh!" Kuina claps. "Now I get it."
"Okay forget this im going to sleep." Chishiya makes to stand but you pull him back down by the pocket of his pants.
"Sit and shut up." He raises his eyebrows in something akin to shock before huffing and sliding back down into his previous position. "So as I was saying, the player to the left of the dealer, which would be Kuina, starts by placing between 1-4 cards face down in a discard pile in the centre. The player must state what the cards they have placed down are but they do not have to tell the truth. They do however have to keep the value the same. For example, I could say I have the 3 kings but place down 3 of the clubs... are you all following?"
You wait for all three of them to say yes before continuing. "The other players can call "cheat" or "bullshit if they think the player is lying about the value of their cards."
"So what happens then?" Chishiya asks, looking at his cards.
"Well, I'd say Kuina, for example, were to say that if you were to call cheat you would have to show your cards to everyone. If Kuina was right you would have to pick up all the cards in the centre, then it would be Kuina's turn to go. If Kuina is wrong, the person on the left of the player, which would be me, will go next."
"And if no one calls the bullshit thing?" You almost choke at hearing Chishiya cuss but you hold it back.
"Well I would take my turn but I must declare the value of my cards to be only one up or down from what you have said yours is." You answer him before turning back to Kuina and An. "For example, Chishiya says his cards were kings. I would have to say mine are queens, kings or aces."
Kuina nods enthusiastically, smiling at her cards. Her body angled away from the rest of the table. "I get it, so how do you know who the winner is."
"The person who gets rid of all their cards first is the winner."
Chishiya hums. "Who's going first?"
"An?" You offer.
"Sure." She smiles, placing down one card. "I have the 7 of diamonds."
"Bullshit." Chishiya spits with a grin the second she finishes her sentence.
You can't stop yourself from laughing at how his face falls when An turns over her card, the 7 of diamonds. "Don't forget to pick it up."
"Go away." He huffs, picking up the card as though it's tainted.
The game passes like that, thankfully no arguments arise despite a near miss when Kuina calls Chishiya a liar because "you're a bad liar your face looks weird when you lie." Only for him to respond with "Your face looks weird all the time but I still believe you when it's necessary."
You'd had so much fun playing, the memory of your sister beside you as you silently remember the way you used to help her cheat at the game against her friends. She would always call you her eyes.
"I have to leave soon." Chishiya whispered as he pulled you aside, Kuina and An still at the table packing up the cards. "I need to be there before I miss my opportunity."
"I know but can't you stay just a little longer?" You ask, fighting the urge to lock him in the bedroom and prevent him from leaving.
"I can't risk not getting a place in the game. I'll be back but I have to leave soon."
"How soon?" You don't need him to answer, the sickening feeling in your stomach tells you what you need to know.
He looks to the floor. "In the next thirty minutes."
You bite the inside of your cheek, not wanting to cry. "Okay."
"Fuck." He huffs, grabbing your wrist. "Come with me."
You let him pull you into the bedroom, waiting until he closes the door to speak. "What's wrong?"
"I'm going to come back but if I don't the generator won't hold out with all three of you using it for an extended period of time. If it comes between saving yourself, Kuina or An you know what to choose."
You ignore the subtlety of his message. "You'll come back it doesn't matter if the generator won't work."
"I will but if I don't."
"But you will." You insist.
"I will."
"Chishiya?" You whisper, taking a step closer.
"Hmm?"
"Can I kiss you?"
He takes a step closer, closing the already small gap between you. "Are you incapable of making your own decisions?"
"No?" You shake your head.
"Then don't ask."
If you could freeze a moment in time this would be it, his hand resting against your hip, albeit awkwardly. His lips pressed against yours, your body ignoring the need for oxygen by supplementing it with a need for him.
He is the one who breaks the kiss, his eyes mapping out your face before smiling a little. "You'll be fine."
"You have to come back."
His tone was definitive. "I will. I should leave now, don't come out until I leave. I'll tell Kuina to come in here."
You so badly wanted to beg him to stay, the fear that he was walking into his death was almost crushing and despite how final the words felt you'd hate yourself forever if you missed an opportunity to say them. "I love you, please be safe."
"Tell me when this is all over." He places a light kiss on your forehead before extracting himself from your hold and leaving the room. You watch as the door closes behind him, the silence in the room is deafening without him.
You tried so hard to ignore the sound of the front door opening and closing, so so hard, but you couldn't, you couldn't stop yourself from hearing him leave nor stop the tears you'd been holding back since early morning.
He was gone and you, you were truly realising just how lonely the Borderlands were.

----------------------------------------------------
First move
You and Mira met during a Hearts game, being placed as partners was enough to spark a conversation before the start but not to form an alliance, at least not yet.
You would always find each other during a game, sometimes you were with your friend (who Mira hated), but mostly alone. You found the meetings fun, and even though it saddened you to leave after it you kept hoping she would find you again the next time.
Mira, on the other hand, was intrigued by you since your first encounter. A world such as the one you were in was quite difficult to maintain contact, but not impossible.
She planned every move, she knew which game you would be, who you would be with. She calculated every step, she needed to see you but most of all she needed you to want her. Nothing was coincidental.
Second move
Mira saved your life.
A spades game was always an issue to you, but you always survived.
Maybe you made too much noise or triggered a trap. A mistake that could've cost your life, if Mira hadn't shown up and killed the adversary.
She didn't understand you.
You acted happy to see her but never asked her to stay, you constantly stayed close, helped, even took risks. Maybe you needed a push.
It wasn't hard to lure the player in your direction, it was also incredibly easy to swoop in and "save" you.
And how grateful you were, enough to finally ask her to stay.
Third move
Your friend was a nuisance, Mira could tell they didn't like her, in fact it was impressive how you didn't notice. You were never alone, they would find an excuse to pull you away or simply join the moment.
Mira knew they were important to you…but…pain is only temporary, and she would happily be there for you.
Your friend was suspicious of Mira wanting to join their game, but relented after your insistence that she was just trying to help.
How tragic their death was.
Fool's move
You were standing in front of your camp, rain falling down your body, completely soaking your clothes.
You had run into an acquaintance, who was kind enough to not only offer their condolences but explain how it happened. You were feeling angry, confused, sad, betrayed. You wanted to scream, fight, run, cry.
Instead, you stood in the rain.
After a while Mira noticed you outside, she could tell something had happened and how deep your frown became when you saw her.
You took a breath, flexing your hands to calm the nerves. "I had an interesting conversation today."
Mira eyed you carefully but smiled nonetheless. "Why don't you tell me inside, you could get a cold with this rain."
You shook your head, swallowing the tears threatening to fall. "Why did you do it?"
She tilted her head, slowly making her way to you. "Do what?"
You flexed your hands again, taking a step back. "You killed them."
She stopped walking and held her hands in front of her body. "You have to be more specific."
You let out a humorless laugh. "My friend! The one who has been with me ever since I was a child! The one that I encouraged to trust you! How could you do this!" Your breaths were coming quicker, the air barely reached your lungs, you could feel yourself crying.
Mira knew she messed up, she knew who might've seen and regretted not killing them too, but she couldn't tell you that. So, she faked sadness and tried to be gentle towards you. "They weren't good enough for you. Look at how much better things are, how many games we're winning together."
You clenched your hands, using every strength in your body to not break down. "Fuck you, Mira."
As you turned around to leave she held your hand to pull back. "Are you serious? I was helping you. You can't leave."
You could see the slight fear in her eyes. A few days, even hours ago you would've relented, but not this time. "I hope I don't ever see you again."
Checkmate
The aftermath of the face cards was chaos, there were bodies on the street, some people were celebrating others were crying.
That's how you found each other again, she was as poised as ever while you were covered in soot.
You slowly made your way towards her, offering a hesitant smile to which he returned.
You fiddled with your hands before speaking. "Hi."
Mira let out a breath. "Hi."
You looked around before staring back at her. "So…you accepted whatever offer that was huh."
She nodded, smiling. "So did you."
You bit your lip and chuckled. "We're probably crazy."
She laughed and bumped you. "I prefer the term ambitious."
You both laughed, still a bit awkward.
You flexed your hands and momentarily looked at the floor. "So…I have these friends…do you want to meet them?"
Mira's eyes sparkled with the request. "Yes, of course."
You nodded and held her hand to lead towards your new group. "Don't kill them this time."
She held your hand tighter. "No promises."

(Love Is) A Deadly Game - chapter 4
A/N: Thank you for reading! This chapter got away from me a bit so I decided to split it, current plan is 2 more chapters. I will do a proper masterlist when the story is done.
Snippet: No matter how much you tried to tell yourself that kiss had meant nothing, you knew you were lying to yourself.
Pairing: Chishiya x fem!reader (alternating POV, indicated by ***)
Rating: Still keeping it at T; descriptions of violence are not graphic
Chapter summary: It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this? (oops) Feelings are acknowledged, but maybe not accepted.
Later that day, you hadn’t quite shaken the thought of Chishiya’s lips on yours. Why had he done that? What a jerk, did he know how you felt about him? He had to, he was clever and observant and you were sort of obvious. Still, why? What had probably been meaningless to him was wreaking havoc in your head, but you didn’t even for a minute entertain the thought that he’d kissed you because he liked you, that simply could not be true.
You clenched your fists and shook your head as if to physically shake the thought of him away. Insults were one thing, making fun of someone’s feelings was another, a cruel thing to do. You promised yourself to get over him, praying your resolve wouldn’t falter the second you saw him. With that in mind, you carefully opened your door a crack to check the hallway was clear; some part of you that you were trying very hard to silence wished he would be there. You cursed your infatuation, and also your crushed hope.
Kuina was at her usual spot by the pool. She was lying down, sunning herself. You sat down on the lounge chair next to hers and sighed. The pool. Chishiya. The kiss. Your heart was beating so loud you were sure Kuina could hear it.
‘I’m sorry about yesterday,’ Kuina said, bringing you back from your reverie.
‘Hm? Why?’
‘Chishiya.’
You could have screamed, you very nearly did. Did he tell Kuina what had happened between you? What did he tell her? You sat up in the chair. ‘Why are you sorry?’
‘Because he was rude to you yesterday, I figured I’d apologize because he’s not likely to.’
‘Oh, that. I mean, he did. Sort of.’
‘He did?’ Kuina sat up and raised her sunglasses.
‘Yeah, but we… ah, fought about something else.’ You shrugged, willing Kuina to lose interest and change the subject. ‘Hey, do you have a lollipop?’
‘Who did you fight?’ Ann asked, sitting down on the edge of Kuina’s chair.
Before you could deflect, Kuina answered. ‘Chishiya.’
‘Oh,’ Ann said. ‘I hope you won.’
You were lucky it was a hot day, you could feel your face going red. ‘I did not.’
‘Shame. That guy needs a bite of humble pie.’
Kuina offered you a lollipop, saving you from elaborating. You reached out to take it and felt a twinge of pain on your side. You had been looking after your wound, using the bandages Chishiya had given you and it was much better but not fully healed. You pressed your palm to it and the pain subsided.
‘I don’t think I’ve ever seen Chishiya in the pool,’ Ann commented.
‘It’s not his thing, I guess.’ Kuina slid down the chair, readjusting her sunglasses.
You almost choked on the lollipop. Did they know what had happened? Were they teasing you? Unconsciously, you fanned your face.
‘Why are you blushing?’ Ann asked.
There was no getting out of that one. ‘It’s nothing. I remembered something.’
‘Someone?’ Ann pressed.
You nodded, it wasn’t a lie.
‘Tell us!’ Kuina sat up again and clapped her hands.
‘He, ah, we kissed in a pool. But I found out it meant nothing to him.’
‘Men,’ Ann muttered.
‘Yeah, men.’ You nodded, grateful the conversation was over.
***
That morning, Chishiya was feeling calmer; he had barely slept but he saw no point in trying. He was ready to pretend nothing had happened. Some part of him wanted to dissect every word she had said at the pool, but he couldn’t afford that distraction. It was his turn to go out, and he needed to be fully focused on clearing the game.
He knew he should stay in his room, he didn’t want to run into her until he had figured out… whatever it was that he had to figure out about her. He also wanted to avoid Niragi, if possible; and he was sure Kuina would ask him if he had apologized and he didn’t want to lie to her but he didn’t feel like telling her how that had gone either. So yes, his room was the safest bet.
Then why did he go out? And more to the point, why did he go straight to the pool where he knew Kuina would be and so probably she would be there as well? ‘Reconnaissance,’ he muttered to himself.
Chishiya had never been paranoid but he could swear more than a few heads turned while he made his way to the pool. Niragi had probably blabbed. Whatever. They weren’t the first to make out at The Beach and they would not be the last, people could gossip if they wanted to. Would she care if they did?
Just as he was thinking this, he spotted her talking animatedly with Ann and Kuina. Kuina even clapped her hands. He wondered if they were talking about him. She didn’t see him but he saw her holding a hand to her side, should he ask her if he could check her wound? No, he’d better not. She would be fine and he wanted to keep his head clear. He fought the temptation to listen in on their conversation.
That night, Chishiya was painfully aware he was not doing his best, he was distracted. He still figured out a good strategy, but he missed a trap. Even worse, he was sure he wasn’t the only one who noticed this. When they cleared the game, Chishiya saw Niragi whispering something to Mira. He remained impassive, there was nothing he could do about it.
***
No matter how much you tried to tell yourself that kiss had meant nothing, you knew you were lying to yourself. If that were true, you wouldn’t have been thinking about it all day. Maybe you should have talked about it with someone else, but you didn’t feel like sharing it yet; you would much rather talk about it with him. Because you had been wondering if the kiss had been a meaningless challenge or something else.
That would be difficult, talking to him, but you went to the courtyard, knowing he’d eventually return to The Beach after his game; you didn’t allow yourself to even think that he might not return, that he wouldn’t clear a game. Still, a wave of relief washed over you when you saw him.
You had rehearsed what you wanted to say to him until it sounded good in your head. But when you were actually within earshot of him, you froze. He appeared to be in a bad mood, his face was neutral, expressionless, but somehow you could feel it. For a second you thought he might stop to talk to you, but he kept walking. You stood there for a second but instead of walking away, you decided to follow him.
‘You’re back,’ you said as you caught up with him.
‘Sorry to disappoint you,’ he said in a low voice.
That was not quite what you were expecting and you couldn’t follow the conversation that you had scripted in your head. ‘I’m not disappointed, I’m—’ but what you were you didn’t manage to explain. Chishiya turned around and looked at you with an intensity not unlike hatred. He raised an eyebrow indicating he was still waiting for you to keep talking. You felt your confidence wither and vanish, you had to look away, you couldn’t hold his gaze but you managed to speak. ‘Listen. About last night—’
Chishiya snorted and turned on his heel. ‘It won’t happen again.’
And just like that he was gone. So that was the end of it, you could stop wondering now if maybe he had kissed you because he wanted to do it. He had done it as a joke, to make fun of you.
Out of the corner of your eye you caught movement, but when you looked up there was no one else around. Had someone overheard you? It didn’t matter.
The next few days went by in pretty much the same way. You barely saw him, and whenever you did he would look away, detached and distant. You would have liked to force him to acknowledge you. Hell, you’d even take a teasing remark, anything but that cold silence; but you didn’t even know how, for whatever reason whenever he was near you were speechless and awkward.
If you thought his demeanor towards you would help you get over your crush—because you kept telling yourself that was all it was, a crush—you were dead wrong. The more you tried to think about something, anything else, the more you thought about him. And it was bothering you so much that Kuina had even asked about it. You told her nothing, of course, what would be the point? If Kuina suspected anything, she didn’t tell you either.
This was no state of mind to have to play a game, but you couldn’t do anything about it. You spent a sleepless night, tossing and turning in bed, wondering if you’d make it back, and the mere possibility of never seeing him again felt like a kick to your stomach. You tried to calm yourself but it was in vain. All too soon, it was time to go to the game. You were right to be worried, this game turned out to be your worst, a veritable pool of tears.
The sound of the crash brought a lot of people to the courtyard. The car wasn’t too damaged, a broken headlight was the worst of it. You climbed out of the driver’s seat muttering apologies to the small crowd that was forming around you. Where was Kuina when you needed her? Probably still out, fighting for her life.
Tears were streaming down your face and you were shaking badly. How much more could you take? How much longer would you last? You couldn’t keep walking, you collapsed on a lounge chair, barely listening to the people around you. You could wait for Kuina there. But someone else found you first.
***
Chishiya had been watching the courtyard when the crash happened. It was not that he was waiting for her to come back from the game. Nothing like that, he was just observing. When he saw the car careen down the access road, then screech to a halt as it hit a post he sneered disdainfully, assuming someone had been celebrating clearing a game. Then he saw her climb out of the car, not visibly hurt but very obviously upset. He considered leaving her to it, this was not his problem. His resolution lasted all of a minute. Somewhat reluctantly, he went looking for her.
‘What happened? Where are the others?’ Chishiya asked, standing beside her, not looking at her.
‘I’m the only one left.’ She shivered.
‘You drove back on your own?’
She nodded once. ‘Like I said, I’m the only one left.’
‘There’s blood on your hands.’ Chishiya observed.
‘It’s not mine.’
‘Obviously,’ he said before he could stop himself.
She looked up at him, her eyes brimming with tears. ‘I had to kill someone, intentionally, not by accident.’
‘Don’t cry here.’
‘Why? Am I ruining your view of the pool? Just go.’
He could just go. Where was Kuina when you needed her? Chishiya wondered. As much as he didn’t want to get involved, he didn’t want to just leave her there either. ‘Come. Don’t give them a show.’ He offered her his hand.
She stared at him for a moment and then stood up. She didn’t take his hand but she followed him inside. Chishiya led her to her room and waited while she washed her hands and her face. She seemed calmer when she stepped out of the bathroom and he was about to turn around and leave when she spoke.
‘Why did I survive? What made me worthier than all the other players?’
‘We are equally worthless,’ Chishiya said, one hand already on the door handle.
‘All our lives are equally valuable.’
‘It’s the same thing.’
‘It really isn’t. Do you truly feel that way?’
‘Get some sleep, you will feel better tomorrow,’ he said, turning back to look at her.
‘Is that so?’ She sat on the bed and bit her lip. ‘Can you stay here? Only until I fall asleep. I just need to know someone else is here.’
Chishiya didn’t reply but he didn’t turn around and leave either. He turned off the light and sat on the floor beside the bed.
‘You can sit next to me,’ she said, lying down, curling in on herself.
‘I’d rather not.’
‘Ah, that’s right. You hate me.’
‘I don’t hate you. I just don’t understand you,’ he said.
‘What is there to understand? I’m not a math problem, you can’t figure me out like a game. Ah, yes. You want to know why I do what I do. That’s my coping mechanism, impulsivity. I’m scared to death half the time and I need to keep my mind off it in order to believe I can survive here. That’s why I chose to steal from the smartest guy in the room. And that’s why I jumped off a cliff to save someone I barely knew. And that’s also why I pushed you into the pool. And why I kissed you back even when I know you don’t like me.’
‘Technically, you pulled me into the pool.’
‘Really? That’s what you heard of all that I just said?’
‘I heard everything.’
‘And?’
‘I’m thinking.’
‘Of course. Can you tell me what you’re thinking?’
‘Don’t push it. Go to sleep.’
She sighed. ‘Chishiya?’
‘Yes?’
‘Thank you.’
She was asleep a few minutes later, but he couldn’t bring himself to stand up and leave. He was lost in thought, and he realized that whatever this was, it could turn out to be scarier than any game.
Some time later, Chishiya got up, he made sure she was sleeping and quietly opened the door. And he ran straight into Kuina.
‘I just got back. I came by to check on her. I heard she crashed a car?’ Kuina asked him, before Chishiya could reply, she continued, ‘I take it she’s alright then. Did you two decide to stop the pining? Good, it was getting old and it really doesn’t suit you.’
Chishiya raised an eyebrow. ‘I wasn’t pining.’
‘Sure. You react this way to everyone,’ Kuina said sarcastically.
Chishiya glanced once at the closed door. ‘She thinks I hate her.’ He turned around and walked away, Kuina was beside him in a second.
‘So tell her the truth. We have enough on our minds trying to survive in this place for you to become a dumb version of yourself all of a sudden.’
‘Even if I knew what I would like to say to her, this is hardly the best place to do that,’ he muttered.
Kuina shrugged. ‘It’s the only place we have at the moment. Your choice.’
Chishiya realized something and stopped walking. ‘Did you say “did you two decide to stop pining?”, she’s pining?’
Kuina shook her head in mock disappointment. ‘You’re so smart and you couldn’t figure that one out? For shame.’
‘That doesn’t make sense. She’s been avoiding me, she doesn’t like me, she can barely look at me.’
‘It rarely makes sense. Are you telling me you feel like your usual rational self?’ Kuina took Chishiya’s silence as a response. ‘My point exactly.’
‘So what are we supposed to do?’
‘Live. Keep fighting to find our way back. Figure things out together.’
‘An attachment is a potential weakness.’
Kuina gave an exasperated groan. ‘Then do nothing, you’ll both get over it. Maybe.’ She walked away.
‘Tell her,’ he muttered to himself under his breath. Tell her what? No, he didn’t need this, he didn’t want this. It wasn’t good for him and it could be even worse for her. He would try to be polite, but he would keep his distance. It was for the best.
Just a few hours after Chishiya had decided to stay away from her, she had gone looking for him, found him, and led him to a dark corridor. He had expected she would want to talk to him, he was willing to listen, maybe she would tell him how she felt. What he didn’t expect was her pushing him against a wall and kissing him. That took him by surprise, but not as much as the realization that he didn’t want to push her away. He stopped thinking and put his arms around her.
But he couldn’t put his thoughts on hold for a long time. Chishiya started visualizing where this could take them: he saw one of them dying in a game, he saw her sacrificing herself for him, and despite how good her lips felt on his, he broke the kiss.
‘I’m not good for you,’ he said in a low voice.
‘Who’s saying you have to be? Are you really worried about that, or are you saying I’m not good enough for you?’ she asked, taking a step back.
‘We can’t be together. You’re smart, you know this.’
‘Am I? Fine. Whatever.’ She all but ran away, leaving Chishiya alone in the dark, in more ways than one.

"What do you dream about?" ... "Home."
After the meteor strike in Tokyo and the deaths of his friends, Arisu was tormented by nightmares of a place he can't remember but feels so familiar. And they would've driven him over the brink if Dream of the Endless hadn't passed through his dreams one night.
(Aka this is what happens when I watch too many sad AiB edits on Tiktok lol the one that inspired this story was this one by the user queenofvs)
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Lately, the Dream Lord had taken to wandering about his realm. Oh, he had done it before, to ensure the world of dreams and nightmares was as it should be; but this was different. This time, following his return from being imprisoned, he simply wandered, traveling unnoticed through the dreams of mortals.
It wasn’t for any reason worth mentioning to his subjects, really. He simply wanted to make sure everything was as it ought to. The one hundred years he was away from the Dreaming, locked away from his home, had felt like eons. And although he tried, he could never forget the feeling that swelled in his chest when he first looked over at the abandoned, decaying ruins of his realm. So every now and then, he would wander through the Dreaming, looking into the dreams of mortals, making sure nothing was wrong.
Tonight was no different. He passed through many dreams, some exciting, some horrifying, some bleak, some wonderful. He was never in the dreams for long, simply watching for a few moments then leaving, never noticed by mortals. And then he came upon one that made him pause.
The humid air and strong scent of earth hit him as he entered a vast botanical garden. It was dark and empty, the only sound from the steadily churning waterfall. In the heart of the gardens, a young man lay sprawled in the dirt. Blood that wasn’t his own covered his face and clothes.
Arisu Ryohei, twenty-five years old. His mother died when he was young and his father, a superintendent, never considered him capable of accomplishing anything. His younger brother, the favored son, felt pressured to earn their father’s love and pride and so often belittled his brother as their father did. Ryohei grew up often dreaming of running far away with his two friends where no one, especially not his family, would ever bother him again. He was also at Shibuya Crossing the previous year when a meteor fell over Tokyo, and of him and his two friends, he was the only survivor.
This was the first night in a while that Arisu was asleep—he was afraid to sleep, because when he dreamed, he dreamed of horror. He dreamed of rooms filling with gas and igniting in flames, the smell of burning flesh overwhelming; horse masks and machine guns and people dropping like flies around him; rooms filling with water and electrocuted bodies; a hotel bursting with debauchery and violence and deafening music and screams and fire; complete darkness where he couldn’t move or see or hear and no one could hear his screams for help; mazes of shipping containers and a voice screaming at him to do it and tidal waves of blood; steam and machinery and someone chasing him and threatening to keep him and chess pieces being shocked; screams and gunshots and explosions; white, emotionless asylum walls and bloodstained shards of glass and croquet balls on a lawn. He dreamed of despair and pain and so much blood.
But what Arisu dreamed about most was this place. It was always the same, exactly as it was tonight—the botanical gardens, empty of life except him. His throat always felt raw, as though he’d screamed and wailed until he couldn’t anymore. He felt blood splattered everywhere on his face and clothes, blood he knew wasn’t his. He was always alone, but the painful ache in his heart told him that he wasn’t always alone, that people dear to him had been there, but they were gone now. He couldn’t get up from where he lay in the dirt; he didn’t want to. He wanted to die here.
“Arisu, live for us, will you?”
“Arisu… thank you.”
The two voices echoed around the gardens, surrounding the young man on the ground. But instead of comforting him and lifting him up as they always did, now the voices tormented him. He couldn’t remember ever hearing them say these things to him, but he hated to hear them. Yet he continued to dream of the voices in a cycle of self-inflicted punishment.
Dream could also feel the slight tinge of confusion around the edges of the dream. Because Arisu was sure he’d never been here before, in the botanical gardens or in any of the places he dreamed about. It all felt so familiar, but he couldn’t remember any of it. But Dream knew better—for he had seen it before, the dreams of the mortals who had fought through his sister’s Borderlands. Freak accidents like the meteor strike and others sent the victims hurtling into the liminal realm to sort out who would die and who would survive. But as a mercy, he and his sister had agreed that the survivors of the Borderlands would have no memory of it when they returned to the waking world; a small reward for proving their unyielding will to live. Some of them, like Arisu, still dreamed about it, but their memories were foggy and vague and tinged with that edge of confusion.
For whatever reason, Dream paused before he left the nightmare. He watched tears fall unendingly down Arisu’s face as he broke himself over and over with despair and grief and guilt.
Then he saw it—the trees beginning to warp, the soft but present ringing, the cracks in the dream. It wasn’t often a dreamer was broken beyond recovery by their nightmares. But some who escaped the Borderlands had come close, driven there by the trauma, grief, and confusion.
“I’m sorry…” Dream looked down and saw Arisu’s face twisted in sorrow. “I’m sorry,” he whimpered again, as though he was afraid he would be screamed at and hurt. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry…”
He could feel more cracks in the dream.
“Arisu, live for us, will you?”
“I’m sorry…”
“Arisu… thank you.”
“Enough.”
Dream stepped in front of Arisu and looked out into the gardens. “This dream is over.”
And with a wave of his hand, the dream was gone. In its place was Shibuya Crossing, abandoned and overgrown and far brighter and clearer than the suffocating, humid darkness of the botanical gardens. Arisu stood in the center, back in the sweatpants and oversized sweatshirt he’d fallen asleep in, tears still falling.
He blinked and jerked in surprise, then whirled around to look at his surroundings in confusion. When his eyes fell on Dream standing a few feet away, he jumped back. “W-W-Where am I?” he croaked out, his voice thick with unshed tears.
“In a dream, of a memory,” Dream answered.
“B-But… But I don’t know…” Arisu sobbed helplessly and pulled at his hair. “I don’t know where I am! I can’t remember!”
“And that is a mercy,”
“Mercy?!” Arisu’s head shot up and he looked at Dream with wide, bloodshot eyes. “How is this mercy?!” he asked, his voice rising with hysteria. “This is all I dream about! It’s like it’s all real, it all really happened, b-but it isn’t at the same time, a-and I just wish I could remember so I know why I dream about it!. How is it mercy if I still dream about it?! All I dream about is death and pain and blood…” He tugged on his hair with a cry of misery. “W-Why is there so much blood…”
Arisu sank to his knees and cried, rocking back and forth and pulling his hair. Wordlessly, Dream walked over and lowered himself to sit next to him. Matthew suddenly appeared, perching on a car overtaken with vines to watch.
When Arisu’s crying had quieted down to sniffles, Dream finally spoke. “You have seen your dreams. As unclear as they are, your mind would be unable to handle anything more. It would overwhelm your subconscious and bleed into your waking world. You would be driven mad. It is a mercy that you do not remember.”
Arisu said nothing for a while, breathing in and out. “Then why do I still dream about it?”
“You dream of this place because part of you refuses to accept what happened. You refuse to accept that there was no reason why you survived and your friends did not.”
“They should’ve lived,” Arisu mumbled weakly, staring sadly at the ground. He sniffled. “They deserved to live…”
“There are many that have died that deserve to live. Death does not pick and choose. It simply happens.”
Sniffling, Arisu scrubbed his sleeve over his eyes. “I don’t know how to live without them,” he said aloud, lowering his head in shame. “I know they’d want me to live, but… I can’t. I don’t want to. Not when they’re dead.”
“Yes, they are dead.” Arisu raised his head to stare wide-eyed at him as he went on. “They are dead, and you are alive. But if you continue to look for any meaning in their deaths and your survival, you will find none. You will destroy yourself wondering why. You were nearly destroyed tonight. Would they want that for you?”
Arisu blinked, and glanced down meekly. “No…”
A familiar voice floated through the empty intersection, but this time, it brought the comfort it always used to.
“We want you to live your life, man. Live it to the fucking fullest.”
Arisu’s breath hitched and a tear rolled down his cheek. “They wanted you to live,” Dream stated. “So live.”
He watched Arisu breathe in deeply, slowly blow it out, and repeat the cycle. He wiped his tears away on his sleeve, much gentler than before, then looked out at Shibuya Crossing. His body now sagged with exhaustion rather than grief and guilt. After a long silence, he turned to look at Dream with a tired yet curious look. “Who are you?”
The corner of Dream’s mouth twitched. “You know me.”
“I do? And… do you know me?”
“I do, Arisu Ryohei,”
Arisu’s eyes widened slightly. Then something sparked in them and he blinked. “I do… somehow…” He exhaustedly ran a hand through his hair. “I don’t want to think anymore,” he mumbled. He looked out at the overgrown Shibuya Crossing. “Or be here anymore.”
He had already overstayed his welcome… but perhaps Dream could do just a little more. “Where do you want to be?”
Arisu paused, in thought. Then longing slowly crossed over his face and a sad, wistful smile grew. “Home,” he answered.
He didn’t have to explain. Dream knew what he meant. With a wave of his hand, Shibuya melted away and Arisu disappeared from his side, reappearing in the middle of an empty street with two other young men on either side of him. He ran down the street with them, elbowing and shoving each other as they whooped and shouted with laughter.
He turned to the raven perched on a fence. “Come, Matthew. We’ve stayed here long enough.”
With a flap of his wings, Matthew flew over to settle on his shoulder. “Poor kid,” he couldn’t help saying. “Is he gonna be okay?”
Dream looked down the street to where Arisu was laughing joyfully as he tried to wrestle away from an attempted headlock. “With time,” he answered. “With time, he will be.”
And with that, Dream was gone, letting Arisu Ryohei spend the rest of the night dreaming of home.

Hey! If it’s alright, may I request a chishiya x gn!reader (established relationship) where it’s their first reaction to the borderlands? Like, Chishiya and reader where going out on a date and then they were suddenly transported to the borderlands and it’s just them reacting to how everyone disappeared, figuring the rules of the place and learning about their new environment and trying to search for food and stuff, and their reaction to their first games and really the games in general. I hope this makes sense!

you pull your bag over your shoulder, rushing up the subway station’s steps. you’re able to spot chishiya almost immediately, hands stuffed in his pockets as he crosses the street. his hair is down, wind blowing the locks away from his face. he gives you a small smile, holding his arm out for you. you interlink your arm with his.
“look, there are fireworks!” chishiya leans over your shoulder to see up at the sky. pink and purple sparks explode against the blue sky.
“ready to go?” chishiya asks. you nod, tugging him along with you.
“there’s a cafe that just opened that i want to check out.” chishiya hums, following you through the shibuya streets.
the cafe is quiet when you enter. a teenage girl stands at the counter. her hair is pulled back in a low ponytail, glasses set low on her nose. “oh, hello!” she smiles. she lowers her head in a quick bow. you reciprocate, pulling chishiya closer to look up at the menu above her head.
“you want an iced americano?” chishiya murmurs.
you nod. “sounds good.”
“go find a table, i’ll order.” you press a quick kiss against his cheek, venturing further into the cafe to find a table. there’s no one in the building besides you, chishiya, and the girl. the windows are frosted, blurring the people rushing through tokyo on the outside.
chishiya slides your cup towards you before sitting down across from you. the coffee is sweet against your tongue. “good?”
“it’s really good.” you hand it out towards him so chishiya can take a sip of it.
he hums. “it’s a little sweet.”
the sound of the lights shutting off interrupts your response. the cafe is only illuminated by the sunlight shining through the open windows outside. you glance around curiously. the silence is almost eerie. you can no longer hear the bustle of people outside. the coffee is no longer brewing. you can’t see any movement behind the frosted glass.
“maybe that girl knows what’s going on,” you say. “the power could be out.”
chishiya nods, standing from his seat. you follow after him as you make your way back through the cafe. the girl is no longer at the counter. everything looks like it was left perfectly in place. “hello?” he calls. you share a nervous glance when there’s no response.
hesitantly, you push the door open to the staff room. there’s no one inside. “maybe she’s in the bathroom?” chishiya looks unconvinced but shrugs, watching as you knock on the door. “hello? is anyone in there?” after a few seconds of complete silence, you hesitantly open the door. it’s empty inside.
“we should go.” you nod, following chishiya out of the cafe.
outside, the streets are completely empty. cars sit abandoned. the only sound is the light breeze blowing through the leaves. “what the hell is happening?” you murmur. chishiya grabs your hand, leading you through the now empty city.
“the street lights aren’t working.” he notes.
“so, maybe it’s a power outage. all of the billboards are out too.” the buildings almost look uncanny without the continuous stream of ads playing on a loop to illuminate the outside.
“then where is everyone? an entire city couldn’t disappear in a second.” you bite back a sigh, pulling your phone out of your bag.
“shit,” you curse under your breath. the device is useless in your hand. “i swear my phone wasn’t dead earlier.” chishiya follows your lead, grabbing his own phone out of his back pocket. he presses the power button a few times before holding it down. despite your efforts, they remain completely off.
“we might be able to find someone if we look around.”
“yeah, probably.”
Tumblr media
night falls faster than expected. exhausted, you sit down in the middle of the street. despite hours of searching, you still haven’t found anything. any people.
you shiver, rubbing your hands against your forearms. chishiya sits down next to you, staring at the horizon. “cold?” he asks.
“a little.”
chishiya doesn’t say anything, simply shrugging his cardigan off and draping it over your shoulders. “thanks.” he nods, letting you move closer and lean against his chest. his arm snakes around your waist, pulling you even closer. you sit in silence for a few minutes, watching the sunset.
“you know, the city is kind of nice when it’s all quiet like this,” you whisper.
“you think so?”
“yeah.” chishiya rests his head on top of yours, rubbing your back. “i bet we’ll be able to see the stars from here.”
you startle when a billboard suddenly turns on. bright white light illuminates the surrounding area.
“game?” you read. an arrow pointing left leads to another billboard, this one pointing right. “should we go?”
“it doesn’t look like we have a choice,” chishiya says.
you follow the arrows to a tunnel, illuminated by the lights on the sides of it. a bus is parked sideways at the entrance. you circle around it, looking down into the tunnel. it looks empty inside.
“are you here for the game?” you jump at the man’s voice. chishiya steps back, reaching behind himself to grab your arm. the man limps closer to the bus. “i won’t hurt ya,” he says, using the sides of the bus doors to support himself. “don’t need to.”
you nervously follow after him into the bus. a table sits with a few phones laid out. a sign reading ‘one per person’ is behind them.
you reach over to grab one, jumping a little when it turns on. chishiya grabs one after you do, looking down at the phone. the device immediately lights up. there are only a few options available. “visa?” you read.
“you two must be new here,” a woman says from her seat. her hair is greasy. her shirt is wrinkled and her eyes look tired.
“what’s going on?” chishiya asks.
“you have to play the games,” she sighs. “to earn visa days. if you run out, you die.” you blink at her in disbelief. dread crawls through your body, tightening around your lungs. fear presses against your throat, constricting your voice and preventing you from speaking. chishiya’s grip on your hand tightens.
“die?” he repeats.
“the lasers!” the woman sobs, burying her head into her hands. “they kill them!”
your phone chimes in your hand, stealing your attention. “registration closed. game: runaway. difficulty: four of clubs. rules: find the goal in two hours.”
“four of clubs?” you repeat.
“the games are ranked by specialty,” a man says. he’s sitting at the back of the bus. he’s dirty - blue jeans and white t-shirt stained with blood. “spades are physical. diamonds are about wits. clubs are team games. and hearts,” he laughs. it’s hollow, echoing in the bus. the sight sends chills down your spine. “they make you play with people’s hearts.”
“the game will begin in five minutes.” your phone chimes.
“come on,” the bloody man stands, making his way out of the bus. he smirks when he passes you, looking down at your hand, still clutching chishiya’s. his breath reeks of cigarettes as he leans in close to you before chishiya pushes him back. “let’s play.”
the limping man pats the woman’s shoulder, coaxing her to stand and follow him out of the bus.
“should we follow them?” you whisper.
“no,” chishiya leads you to the back of the bus. “the rules said to find the goal. there’s graffiti on the side of the bus. GOAL.”
“are you sure?” he nods. “okay.”
“hey,” chishiya wipes a tear you hadn’t realized fallen from your cheek. “breathe, baby, we’ll be okay.” you nod, taking a shaky breath. the air doesn’t feel like it reaches your lungs but you try anyway. chishiya coaxes you to lean in, forehead pressed against yours. “i’ll protect you.”
“promise?” the world feels juvenile. you’re almost embarrassed but chishiya’s thumb stroking against your cheek distracts you.
“i promise.”

ֺ✦⸼࣪⸳ 𓂃 ele a levaria para um lugar longe da vista do mestre do jogo, apenas para tentar amenizar um pouco a situação e evitar serem mortos de primeira.
