17 year old Sharon Tate was proclaimed the first "Prom Queen" at the American High School in Vincenza Italy in November 1960. Years later a former classmate would joke the fall prom queen position was created just for her.

I was trying to explain American highschool culture to my English child and the best I could do was: "Training in nationalism"
Which, am I wrong?
But yeah, just so Americans know the whole "School spirit! Go School! School is the best!" thing? Not a thing in secondary schools in other parts of the world.
School pride does not exist in the American sense at all
Which is good because when you're away from it you realise how fucking weird and dystopian it is
Like I got in a talking to by the administration when I was in high school about my lack of "school spirit" and how that "could count against me in college applications" as a threat
I cannot see that happening in the UK ever

Marauders fic, except they live in america and go to a normal high school.
Remus, Dorcas, Lily, and James taking AP classes while Sirius pays Peter to do his homework while also simultaneously complaing about having so much homework. Regulus is so smart he skips a grade and takes classes with James and Remus. Barty, and Evan  are Neighbors with Regulus and go to a local arts school along with Marlene and Mary which Reg desperatly wishes he could attend. James and Lily work at the Coffee shop everyone goes too. The shop is called Hogwarts and is magic themed along with other shops around the area like Diagon Alley, a cat  bookstore (they also function as a cat place where you can rescue cats!) that Remus, Evan, and Regulus work at.
Should I write it?

Quick note about any of my fics set in an American high school:
For anyone who reads my Hatchetfield fics and is not yet aware, I am British. Because of this, I honestly have no clue how American school systems work. People have explained it to me but the information goes in one ear and out the other. I gather that when you’re fourteen you’re freshmen, then when you’re around sixteen you’re juniors, and you’re only seniors when you’re seventeen or eighteen, you go to kindergarten until you’re five and attend elementary school until you’re eleven, transferring to middle school for about three years. That’s what pop culture has taught me, I may be entirely wrong. I don’t know how long your classes are, I don’t know what you learn in your classes, I barely understand what your ‘periods’ are, like, how long is the average American high school lunch break? Some of you may have noticed that I was setting up a big football game in my fic ‘Gotta Get Back To School’ then totally skipped over it… I may now confess that I barely understand British sports so there was no hope of me grasping American football, or soccer or anything like that. I was FREAKING OUT about having to write football, I thought people would call me a fraud if I totally butchered it so I skipped the game entirely to move the plot along. So, long story short, I’ll try my best but please don’t expect accurate descriptions of American high school in my fics 😅.

Do Europeans know that most kids don’t do the pledge anymore? At least at my school, nobody really stands up for the pledge of allegiance, we just talk through it.

there’s just something about living in america and thinking you’ll be free from mass shootings once you graduate high school only to realize you’re always at a risk no matter what stage of life

i hate choosing high school classes because everyone has to give their two cents about it. “Oh, don’t take that AP! It doesn’t matter” but it could give me a 5? so?

Where’d all the time go?
It seemed like it was yesterday when I first stepped foot in that school. It seemed like it was yesterday when we were just a couple of freshmen, trying to figure out what the heck was high school in the midst of a global pandemic.
Online classes, among us gameplays, Tik Tok. Presidential elections, gateway projects, junior year.
It seemed like it was yesterday when we were all in the same classes. It seemed like yesterday when we all took the SAT. It seemed like it was yesterday when we realized we only had a few months left together.
AP exams, Junior Journey, summer programs. College visits, SAT scores, last first day.
It was a few months ago when we stepped foot in that school for the last time. It was a few months ago that we had our last first day. It was a few months ago that we were officially seniors.
Senior year tasted bittersweet. I couldn’t wait to graduate, go to college, and become an adult. But I cherished every single minute with the people around me because I didn’t know if I was going to see them ever again after graduation.
It’s April 4th, 2023. And 66 days from now, we will be graduating. My heart aches because I might never see these people again, because we are never going to be in the same classroom again. We are never going to joke around in AP Stats anymore, or skip advisory and go to McDonald’s together. We are never going to struggle in AP Calculus together anymore or help each other in our group chat.
While I know we’re all going to do wonderful things in this big world, I can’t help but be selfish and hope we have a few more months together. A few more months of laughter, helping each other out, and consoling one another in times of crisis.
With a bright future ahead of us, all of our roads will be separate, but in the future, I hope they all cross again. But in the meantime, let’s enjoy our last 9 weeks together.
Love, a fellow member of the PHA class of 2023
