The reviews for the last couple of new Broadway shows (notably The Notebook and Water For Elephants) have been surprisingly brutal.
I guess these reviewers aren't down for the angsty romance feels.

I am considering reading the books but I've seen it said that Rand is the protagonist of the book series and that characters like Moiraine and Egwene who are basically my favourites have significantly less to do in the books, with Moiraine being absent for chapters and chapters at times. I'm also not a big Rand fan (i love a disaster man and Mat is right there, come on) so I'm wondering would you reccomend the series to me? What are the big differences between it and the adaptation?
so #1 advice for anyone regardless of where they're at with wanting to read the books: If you're already watching the show, don't start reading the books until after this season is over. There's a lot of rearranging and changing of stuff in the books and I think that can get confusing if you're trying to consume the show and the books at the same time.
Ok so regarding Rand, yes, he's the main character and is the vast majority of the POVs in the first book. Its extremely obvious who the dragon reborn is in the book and its never really presented as a mystery. As the books go on, it becomes much much more of an ensemble type story and Rand will be almost entirely absent for long periods of time, but he's still largely the main character. but there are 148 different POV characters in the books, so its far from a Rand-only story
Regarding Moiraine and Egwene, while I wouldn't really say that Egwene has a significantly lesser role in the books (at least after the first book), Moiraine's role is definitely beefed up for the show. We don't get her POV until a few books in (well there is a very brief POV in book 1), and she's largely missing from book 2. She is a much more (emotionally) distant figure and definitely the sort of Gandalf/mentor role in the books rather than the main character. But if you like Egwene, there is plenty of Egwene content for you in the books, do not worry.
As for differences, the main difference between the books and the show is the first book is not the first season. There are definitely elements there, but the first book is best viewed as an homage to the fantasy genre that Robert Jordan had to make a certain way to get it through publishing. Its not *bad* but its definitely a Lord of the Rings-y story that follows that kind of formula. The show made sure there was a lot more worldbuilding and future plot threads established in season 1 than there was present in book 1. It doesn't start becoming truly its own thing until book 2, imo, and it's a common sentiment where books 4 and 5 are really where it starts becoming the Wheel of Time and holding its own ground. Like as much as some people do complain about it and as much as I do like the Eye of the World, it would have made a terrible on screen experience if it were told entirely faithful to the book
So I wouldn't say absolutely to read it or not. obviously I do want people to read and enjoy the books, but its also a commitment, and if you're coming to them off of the show, its best to be aware that's its going to be different going in. You're not going to see some of the things that happened in season 1 at all, but you're going to get a much more detailed account of the story and it might give you better context for some of the things going on in the show, even if its not how it happened in the books.
So if you're ok with the fact that its different, I say try it once the season is over. If you don't want to finish it or continue on with the series, then there's no harm in trying and you can always keep watching the show even if the books aren't for you

✨Reading Master List
Here's a masterlist of what I have read and/or am reading on AO3! Currently everything I'm reading is primarily SKZ fics (some have referenced TxT or ATEEZ and it's cute) but I'm generally just reading to read and learn what people are writing/passionate about. It's honestly enlightening, in a good way (most times). Reviews are below the cut. ♥
my ao3: think143 🔖 - unfinished work 📗 - completed work 📖 - currently reading/tracking
My Favorite (Finished) Fics
(In order of completion, not best/worst or anything like that)
hands-on learning 💖 (E) 25.2k Relationship(s): Han Jisung/Lee Minho Notable Tags: Alternate Universe - College/University, Porn with Feelings, Friends to Lovers My Notes: I thought I would have more to say about this one but it's just really really good. A nice quick nighttime read before bed. There's just something about the ones with "feelings revelation" that make me sooooo happy. And yes, all of the smut is *chef's kiss*.
MFA (Most Fuckable Ass) 💖 (E) 53.2k Relationship(s): Han Jisung/Lee Minho Notable Tags: Teacher-Student Relationship, Professor Lee Minho, Student Han Jisung, Slow Burn, Daddy Kink My Notes: I burned through this fic in an evening and I am fanning myself like a Southern woman in the heat of summer on her front porch. So incredibly well-written, and I've found a fic author that I'll be following closely for a long time.
don't leave me tongue-tied 💖 (E) 57.5k Relationship(s): Han Jisung/Lee Minho Notable Tags: Alternate Universe - College/University, Friends to Lovers, Friends With Benefits, Porn with Feelings, Light Angst, Denial of Feelings, Emotional Slow Burn, Misunderstandings, Fluff My Notes: This was honestly really endearing to read and see actual feelings come to light. Author commented to say that it's based on a manga called "My Quiet Best Friend's Just Tongue-Tied", but without the dub-con elements. Well-written and reads easily; comical when it needs to be!
Haebang 💖 (E) 193.6k Relationship(s): Stray Kids Ensemble/Stray Kids Ensemble Notable Tags: Fluff, Smut, Porn With Plot, Sex Work, Dom/sub Undertones, Daddy Kink, Explicit Consent, Subspace, Porn with Feelings, BDSM, Polyamory, Slow Burn, Hurt/Comfort, Possessive Behavior, Feelings Realization, Safewords My Notes: Okay, hear me out; there is a LOT going on in this fic. A lot. The point of the Haebang retreat is that each member specializes in helping you find liberation with one aspect of sex; be it intimacy, dom/sub, etc, and each chapter follows each member at the start before things start to get a bit more involved. However, any time I try to word why I like this fic so much, I simply cannot. Also Seungmin is a nerd and we love him for it.
instinct 💖 (E) 53.4k Relationship(s): Bang Chan/Reader Notable Tags: Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics, Mating Cycles/In Heat, Alternate Universe - College/University, Light Dom/sub My Notes:This was the first ABO fic I read and it makes every other one I've read after it pale in comparison. I love how the author describes what's going on in the reader's head without over-explaining or spoon feeding it to us. The relationship between Reader and Chan, plus all of the other housemates, is so so so good.
come on home 💖 (E) 206.7k Relationship(s): Han Jisung/Lee Minho Notable Tags: Angst, Smut, Mutual Pining, Slow Burn, Violence, Strippers & Strip Clubs, Denial of Feelings, Referenced Homophobia, Domestic Violence, Implied/Referenced Cheating, Feelings Realization, POV Alternating, Gangs, Guns, Shitty Exes My Notes: The guns are there for a split second, but this fic is very centered on a incredibly difficult to read domestic abuse situation, and the liberation from said relationship. There's also the orientation realization of another character, but that instills a lot of angst and fear of loss while reading. However, the fic is still incredible, a powerful read, and definitely on the recommended list.
Wannabe Poet 💖 (E) 134.2k Relationship(s): Han Jisung/Lee Minho Notable Tags: Bad Poems, Bullied Han Jisung, Friends with Benefits, Loss of Virginity, Exhibitionism, Smut, Attempted Rape/Non-Con, Sexual Assault. My Notes: I'm all about found family and I feel like this fic really hit the nail on the head for it. I loved the concept of this fic from the beginning. Han texts a bad poem to a random number and makes a friend in Minho. Most of this fic seems centered on Han becoming comfortable with his true self and what he wants, not what his family wants for him. I really love the love that he finds not only in Minho, but in everyone around him. ♥
Five Stars 💔 but 💖 (E) 420.7k Relationship(s): Hwang Hyunjin/Yang Jeongin, Han Jisung/Lee Minho, Lee Felix/Seo Changbin, Bang Chan/Lee Minho Notable Tags: MAJOR CHARACTER DEATH, GRAPHIC DEPICTIONS OF VIOLENCE, DEAD DOVE: DO NOT EAT, Cannibalism, Dismemberment, Drug Use, Implied/Referenced Self-Harm, Implied/Referenced Child Abuse, Emotional Manipulation, Some Fluff, Explicit Sexual Content, Animal Abuse, Animal Death, Grooming, Murder, Mutual Pining, Minor Choi San/Jung Wooyoung, Implied/Referenced Suicide My Notes: I have to stress so so so so much that the writing on this fic is one of the best I've ever read. HOWEVER, it's also one of the most fucked up pieces of fiction I've ever read. Mental health issues are at the center of this bloody, sexy, kinky fic. It would truly be a horror movie if it were put onto screen. Please please please make sure to read ALL OF THE TAGS on this fic before deciding whether to read it or not. I had to take frequent breaks but it was difficult to make myself look away because I wanted to know what the hell was going on. I have never screamed so much at a fic before in my life. I cried at least six times and four of those were in the last 50k words.
Heart Song 💖 (E) 63.1k Relationship(s): Han Jisung/Lee Minho, Bang Chan/Lee Felix, Hwang Hyunjin/Seo Changbin, Kim Seungmin/Yang Jeongin Notable Tags: Alternate Universe - Soulmates, Soulmate-Identifying Marks, Alternate Universe - College/University, Angst with a Happy Ending, Physical Disability My Notes: I just...I cried so much during this fic. In this universe, soulmates are identified by a dream that people have on the night of their 16th birthday. They dream about a significant memory from their soulmate's life, and when they awaken, their soulmate's first impression appears on their body written in their handwriting. The only problem is that...Han Jisung is blind, so he has never seen anything. Lee Minho leads his whole life thinking that he doesn't have a soulmate, because he saw nothing in his dream. I LOVE the author's storytelling style, the way they use angst in believable ways, and the way that they bring the characters together.
Speak With Your Eyes 💖 (E) 164k Relationship(s): Han Jisung/Lee Minho Notable Tags: Alternate Universe - Space, Hybrids, Androids, Alternate Universe - Science Fiction, Space Corps, Miscommunication, Slow Burn, ONLY ONE BED, Found Family, Smut My Notes: A ROMANCE IN SPACE?! Lee Know is an android hybrid, and unfortunately this universe has a lot of not very nice things that are in place regarding people who are not fully human. Lee Know saves Han's life, then Han saves Lee Know's life, then Lee Know saves Han's life again...you get the picture. It's incredibly well-written, a lovely drop into a different setting than I'm used to, and devourable in a day. Will be following this author for a while!
so sweet like chocolate 💖 (T) 71.7k Relationship(s): Han Jisung/Lee Minho Notable Tags: Alternate Universe - College/University, Strangers to Friends to Lovers, Slow Burn, Fluff My Notes: I cannot stop gushing about this fic. The mutual pining is written incredibly addictingly and just aaaagh! Lee Know is a librarian, Jisung is a student who has never visited the library before, Jisung may have accidently thrown a pencil at Lee Know...it all becomes very fluffy at just the right pace. I read this so quickly and when it was over, and the author's note popped up saying "and that's the end!" I had to check the % progress on my kindle. I would devour any further stories written about this story, but I am also okay with how it ended, and imagining what happens next.

While we’re on the subject of Billionaire superheroes, what are your top ten favorite Batman stories? And by that I mean your favorite Batman stories in which the character of Batman himself is the focus rather than one of his villains. I recall you stating that you usually gravitate more towards Batman’s rogues than to Batman himself, but that a few writers have managed to get you to do the opposite. I’m curious to know which stories those are!
So I think we should re-establish that while I have read some superhero comic books and consumed some superhero media, I am what comic book shop geeks would refer to as a "fake comic fan." I have barely scraped the surface of superhero comics, and even then mostly from only a few specific angles. You are asking a very filthy casual this question - you are not going to get any mind blowing answers. I haven't really felt inspired to dig into his comics very much beyond some surface level "top ten Batman stories for beginners" list stuff.
For Batman books, I like The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, and the vampire elseworlds stuff a lot, which I'm pretty sure made the people who follow me that are actual Batman fans groan in dismay and disappointment. I've been told the first two are overrated and most people seem to dislike the vampire Batman stories. I love them, though, they're schlocky and fun. I like the Long Halloween/Dark Victory duology for having fun (if imperfect/slightly contrived) mysteries, emotional origins for Two-Face and Robin, and some really gorgeous art even if some of the design choices are a bit weird.
(If we include Batman spinoffs, I could cheat and say the Amanda Conner Harley Quinn run is my all-time favorite Batman comic, but I feel we all know that's not what your question was looking for.)
Beyond comics, I like Batman the Animated Series - though if I sat down and did a "top ten episodes" list it would almost certainly be ones that focused on the villains over Batman himself. I like the 60's Batman movie with Adam West - it's Batman focused and Batman himself is very enjoyable in it. I like the Lego Batman movie too, and Holy Musical B@tman.
Honestly, I guess what makes Batman work for me is either when he's more a supporting character/part of the ensemble in a story rather than the central focus, and/or when he's played primarily for humor. The sillier Batman is, the more I enjoy focusing on him, and the more serious he is, the more I prefer him to be, you know, just one of several characters we're focused on - either splitting the "main character" role with the villain of the week or, like, the Justice League.

This is, uh, my first ever ask I sent to anyone but I wanted to say that I love your take on a self aware enstars au! I love reading different ideas of this kind of thing and I was surprised to find one for enstars. It’s so cool to read everyone’s ideas and contributions to this au!
I wanted to get your thoughts on something regarding the scenario where the player becomes part of a new unit and everyone doesn’t like them because the player disappears around the same time. In most imposter self aware genshin aus, the characters eventually realize that oops, they’ve been hunting down the player all along and immediately regret and try to repent. In your opinion, how would the idols (and Anzu too, I guess) realize that the leader of the new unit is actually the player, like maybe through a song the player and their unit makes about their experiences in the world and their past one, and how would they go about apologizing and/or making up for their poor treatment? Personally, I think that Niki and Adonis would probably use food for their apology somehow and Shu might make an outfit for you (and maybe your unit) but I’d like to see what you come up with!
You don’t have to answer this one, I’d just love to hear your thoughts on it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to combine these two asks because they're both kind of related to each other so I thought it would be best to do both of them in a single post. I hope that's okay with you guys ^^
First of all, thank you!! I'm glad you've been enjoying yourself with this AU!! I mentioned it before but I myself am a big fan of yandere self-aware AUs in pretty much every fandom I'm in so I was pretty excited when I got the chance to think and talk about it due to nana's ask 😊 The fact that you guys are just as excited about this as me is obviously a huge plus!!!
Now, let's get to some theorizing!
Edit: Holy shit this got kind of long. Oops djdjd
gn reader
tw yandere, past bad treatment towards reader, obsession, stalking, mention of murder, kidnapping, creepy behavior
The characters finding out that idol! reader is actually the player right as they're about to leave and how they would try to make up for the poor treatment
You've likely been treated pretty poorly by all of the characters for a while now, even though you don't understand why. You just got sent into a completely foreign world as an idol and everyone seems to simply hate you? There's no one except your two unit mates that look like carbon copies of you, that want to stick by your side and talk to you. It's a pretty miserable experience to be antagonized all the time even though you don't remember doing anything wrong. You're just existing and trying to live your life, why do they hold you in so much contempt? You wish you could simply ask them but no one gives you a straight answer when you try. It's frustrating.
Naturally it would all come to a breaking point where you just can't deal with the harsh treatment any longer. You don't want to spend every second of your life being reminded that none of the people here like you. There are even some that openly threaten you with violence for seemingly no reason at all. Sometimes you're scared to go to bed because you fear that one of them might just sneak in at night and end your life once and for all
You decide that you've had enough. Why are you even staying at Ensemble Square anymore? You don't have any friends aside from the twins and you didn't even want to be an idol in the first place. If you have to make a living in this strange world then you would much prefer doing some normal job and life a humble life at a completely different place. At least then you could life in peace and maybe find some happiness.
There's no way you're staying here any longer.
Meanwhile, while you're busy preparing your bags to move somewhere else, an important revelation was made at ES. One that leaves everyone shocked and appalled and most of all: very guilty.
When Anzu made her rounds through the office that day, she stumbled upon a notebook left forgotten on one of the desk. Now normally the dutiful producer would not be one to pry into the personal affairs of others but there was a certain sense of curiosity set aflame inside of her when she saw your name on the cover. All of a sudden, she didn't care about your privacy anymore when she remembered that you were likely the reason why the player wasn't with them anymore.
So she goes ahead and reads the first page of your notebook, finding it to be an amalgamation of a personal diary and a blank piece of paper where you can write down ideas and concepts for upcoming songs.
At first, Anzu reads with limited interest, merely skimming the lines until suddenly, she feels her eyes widen dramatically, the notebook almost slipping out of her hands in shock.
She sees you writing about all of the strange occurrences in your life. How one day, you were still sitting at home playing the mobile game you loved and suddenly the next day you were sucked into the game for no apparent reason. You describe in clear detail how confused and lost you were and how everyone rejected you, seeming to hate you for no fault of your own. How much it hurt and how you had resolved to leave all of this behind you and move to a better and hopefully nicer place.
It hits Anzu like a flash, the realization that you were the player all along. That they had treated you so cruely when you were the very person they wanted to be with more than anything.
Of course, she immediately went and called in every single idol at ES, much to the surprise of everyone attending. It was highly unusual for the producer to call on all of them so suddenly, and with such urgency and panic in her voice as well.
Naturally, when she reveals what she had discovered, all hell breaks loose.
How could they have been so blind? How could they not have realized this sooner? Now that they knew the truth it all seems so obvious in hindsight. The player suddenly disappears and at the exact same time, a new idol that none of them have ever heard of mysteriously joins the game, with a new unit made specifically to compliment and highlight them.
They feel so guilty, they need to make it up to you! They need to apologize and tell you how sorry they are to have mistreated you like that when you were the most important person to all of them!!
But there were even more pressing issues right now. You had mentioned that you wanted to leave ES behind and start a new life somewhere else. You were about to leave them and escape their grasp forever. They could not let that happen! Now that they know who you truly are, they can't just let you go!
Since you mentioned Izumi and Ritsu, let's talk about them a little!!
Ritsu is just hit with the sudden realization that he's going to be left alone by the person he loves the most again. He is quite empathetic so he understands why you would choose to do this. From your end, there was no reason for you to stay around any longer with they way they were treating you. You deserve to have a happy life with people that appreciate you.
And yet, the old abandonment issues are kicking in in full gear. He gets very very desperate, he wants you next to him, you can't just leave him!! They have to find you before you can abandon him forever, he promises he will make things up to you properly once you return! He'll give you all the love and affection you deserved from the very beginning and he'll promise to never let you go again! Please, just don't leave him! Don't let Ritsu be all alone again!!
Izumi is desperate too but in a different way. Once he realizes that his beloved obsession is escaping him, his mood starts to shift rapidly as he tries to think of a way to find you. He didn't think of putting a GPS tracker on you like he normally would have, simply because he used to hate your guts because he wrongly believed that you were the cause for his beloved player leaving him. But now he knows that's not the case and he's downright hysteric.
Izumi will 100% start a manhunt as if he hadn't just loudly complained that he was going to miss out on an important fotoshoot because of this impromptu meeting. He's already out there, trying his absolute best to find you. Breaks into your apartment with zero hesitation to see if you're still there or to find some clue on where you may have gone to in your room. Maybe he finds a map laying on the table or he finds some other clue but he's hot on your tail.
He is not going to let you slip from his grasp. He's going to find you and then he's going to drag you right back where you came from. He's going to be a bit mean in true Izumi-fashion but he is going to apologize for treating you that harshly. The shift in his attitude toward you is really creepy honestly. First he's shouting insults at you or ignoring you and now he's obsessively holding on to you and smelling your hair like the obsessed freak he is.
Also his apology included most likely kidnapping you <3 He won't get an opportunity to keep you for himself like this anytime soon, he'll just tell the others that he lost your trail and that you already managed to get far, far away. There's no need for them to keep searching for you around here
Some other apologies include Niki and Adonis cooking your favorite meals for you every day and they're honestly pretty sincere in their apologies. I don't think either of them would be particularly harsh to you when the misunderstanding was still happening but they feel bad all the same that they didn't stop the others from being so cruel to you.
Speaking of cruel, Shu was probably awful to you back then. The player is his muse, the person he loves more than anyone else. He's already not known to mince his words around others and he's very open when it comes to expressing his dislike for people he doesn't like. Imagine how brutal he would have been to the person that he thinks is the reason you left him and aren't coming back.
Similar to Izumi, his attitude toward you will make a complete 180. He's immediately gushing about you, admiring every little detail about you and already trying to guess your vague measurements to get to work. He's going to make the most wonderful outfit for you as an apology! No effort will be spared and he will work day and night to make this absolutely perfect. Shu is not the kind to often admit to his mistakes and apologize so take this as a token for how obsessed he is with you
There's more like how Arashi would most likely take you on a shopping tour or how Tsukasa would want to make it up to you by inviting you to eat sweets with him at his favorite café, but I feel like I've already rambled on for a long time and it's getting pretty late now
Hope you enjoyed!

Daemon is not a character I enjoy and I don’t feel any attraction to him. But I absolutely love Matt Smith. I am vastly more attracted to him when he is himself or the Doctor, than as Daemon. I think I just vibe more with his personality. What Matt character (other than the Doctor or Daemon) do you enjoy most? 💖
HI nonnie! Daemon certainly isn't for everyone, I get it. Eleven is goofy and funny and has his dark moments.
That's a tough ask. Like runner up I guess? So Eleven is definitely my favorite, Daemon a close second. Probably Prince Philip in The Crown (and not only for these two lines) is my third.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought I would do some honorable mentions as well and one where Matt has given his all to a role in a pretty terrible film. People might think of Morbius when I say that, but the one that comes to my mind first is always Terminator Genisys (2015).
Wow this movie is bad and I love the Terminator franchise. It was one of the first films he did after he left Doctor Who. I really want to spoil it for everyone but I won't. His character "Alex" isn't who he seems (you can google it if you want to). Matt really did a great job here, but it's painful to watch this movie fall apart over the 2 hours. My man gave it his all. (Not to mention that I like this haircut despite loving his crazy, floppy hair.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another honorable mention has to go to Jack, in the absolutely amazing Last Night in Soho (2021)! Matt is so good at playing villains that I really enjoy those roles. Jack is the absolute worst, but Matt makes him believable yet not over the top. Sleazy. It's a wonderful performance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can literally find some of my gifs of him by searching words like "Matt Smith's ears" because I have a serious problem.
So, I'm not going to review every role he's ever had because that's not what you asked. I will say I have yet to get my hands on a copy of Mapplethorpe (specifically the Director's Cut) and will watch it as soon as I can. I know it's been out for a while but it's hard to get. Until I have watched it, my last honorable mention is his role as Martin in Official Secrets (2019). It's his most understated supporting role, in my opinion. When he's the lead or part of an ensemble, he has loads of personality, almost overwhelmingly. This film is well written and well cast and that always helps. His role isn't huge but he performs it with sincerity and authenticity.
Tumblr media
Rescue me chin boy and show me the stars. sigh. that chin though.
Was that long enough for you anon? LoL If you follow me (seems like you might), you know that I'm longwinded when I talk about Matt's acting. If you haven't seen these, I suggest you save the best for last and get Genisys out of the way first so you can enjoy the others more thoroughly. Most Matt fans have seen more of his work than they realize as his career his been relatively short and he takes time off from film/tv to do theater. He only left Doctor Who 10 years ago so you don't have a long filmography if you decide to work your way through it.
Always feel free to pop by and tell me more about your favorite roles he has played or let me know when you watch new ones! And that goes for this anon and anyone else. My blog is definitely one third Matt Smith, if not more. This ask made me so happy because I don't often get to talk about my man, since I mostly write fics. Thank you, anon!

hi!! i like your takes and i wanted to ask a couple of things if you're willing to spend your time answering them :) it's okay if you won't want to.
so, the first one: what's your thoughts on korra the series? i know that it's a very vast topic and i need to specify what exactly i want to discuss but maybe you could give your opinion on it?
while i agree that some things in korra could be better and some choices are not exactly ideal, but i really like the series nonetheless. i love the characters, i love the themes, i love the plot and overall atmosphere of the series.
and the second one: i heard the fandom say that korra made aang a bad father. and i agree that neglecting your non-airbender kids is not good parenting, but you can understand why aang did what he did. i won't elaborate on that because the ask is already too long (but i will be explaining myself if you are willing to listen to my thoughts). so the question is: do you agree with the characterization of aang in korra and why if not?
thank you for sharing your takes on things and for your art!! you're amazing <3
thank you!!! and oof, okay, this is a lot… first of all, i would say that you should check out my lok criticism tag since it covers a lot of problems i have with the series. in summation, i would say that I LOVE korra (the character), love korrasami (seriously i cannot impress enough how much korrasami rewired my brain back in 2015 lol), love the episode “korra alone” SO MUCH, love asami(‘s unfulfilled potential), i love jinora my babieee, i love ming hua and the red lotus generally (although their execution leaves something to be desired…), i think the animation is often gorgeous, and i hate…. pretty much everything else. i hate the liberal politics, i hate the way the story is structured, i hate the extremely uncompelling ensemble of side characters, i hate what they did with my children the gaang, i hate how generally disjointed and awkward the writing feels. it’s not a terrible show by any means, but as a successor to atla it is, unfortunately, hot garbage.
as for aang being a bad father, it’s not something i generally think about just because i’ve never been on board with the aang & katara nuclear family agenda (even if you do think that aang & katara would last as a couple, which i don’t, the thought of them getting married and having three babies should send a shiver down your spine — and yes to preemptively get ahead of the christians who will accuse me of being against the sanctity of patriarchy, i am not a fan of marriage and nuclear family structures and having three kids together etc. and before anyone asks my parents are still together after 30 years it is not a personally motivated objection to a systemic issue lol. ok tangent over). but yes i do understand why aang would prioritize his culture over his children. the only thing is, why wouldn’t he include all his kids in learning about air nomad culture?? do bumi and kya not count because they can’t airbend??? it seems like a pretty myopic viewpoint for aang of all people to hold. lok generally did a really bad job of exploring the potential and nuances of mixed families (they really dropped the ball on mako and bolin, in many ways, for example). so yeah, i definitely don’t agree with the characterization of aang in lok. or any of the other gaang members we see for that matter. those are not my children!!! get them away from me!!! his most egregious offense in lok isn’t even his parenting though it’s his disgusting little chinstrap beard. sorry to michael dimartino but adult aang would be hot!!! he was literally a babychad in atla and they uglified him :(( gave him a nasty little beard and white man features. get away from him you sickos!!!!

I refuse to believe an episode as big as the 100th would be solely dedicated to one character. The showrunners and writers knew this episode was coming up and they have been working on it for a long time. As long as I have been watching shows that made it to this point, they are usually a celebration of the ensemble in some way whether it is a joyous occasion or an epic drama scenario. It also confounds me to see and read all these anonymous fans, coming up with these ideas of Buck suddenly switching to some other dude because this original crew member came back for an instant to help Hen and the others find their captain and his wife. Could it be that he simply wants to do a solid for the 118 because he was once part of the 118 and Bobby was his captain, who believed in him and helped him be a better fire fighter?
And going after the actor playing a character you feel has been overused (and he may be), and making it feel like it's his fault is low. I have no idea why so much is taken out on him when all he wants to do his show his excitement in the work he and his fellow actors have done. So you're not a fan of his character, fine. Don't attack him. Bring up your issues with the writers and showrunners. As someone who loves this show and has a favorite character (Eddie), when I don't see a lot of him I don't go to the other actors' ig pages, dm them and start saying how I can't stand seeing them again and again each week. Who does that? I'll say it, spoiled and selfish individuals with no regard for other people's privacy. Social media has made it so that people feel entitled to the actors or musicians' lives and judge them or be buddy buddy with them. And the moment reality hits that they are not real besties and they don't know you from Adam, they get upset and feel the desire to trash them and bring them down. So they make it their mission every time that actor's character is shown, they start saying it's going to be a shit show because said character is back again, and it's just a still or a two second shot in a trailer.
Yes, I feel let down by some of the writing choices. Yes, I am a buddie fan, and yes, I can understand fans who are not buddie fans or Buck fans in general. You have a right to express your frustration and critique a performance or story plot. That does not mean to hunt down the person playing a part. Grumble about it here, or with your friends irl, and when reporters ask for questions, express your concerns through them so they can let them know professionally. Leave the actors alone. I consider it a gift that he wants to connect with us because Oliver is also a fan. He gushes over special scenes just like we do. Despite ndas and a loyalty to the show, you can see when he gets frustrated too. So in conclusion, just keep some boundaries and to the other 'fans', grow up.

I do love the book but it's harder to get through than the show if you don't care for wangxian just because the focus is that much narrower. The nature of adaptation and also CQL having objectively too many episodes(Guanyin temple did NOT need four eps lol) turns it into an ensemble show with something for everyone. Yanli takes fifty chapters to show up and Wen Qing doesn't make her entrance until chapter 60. I am one of those people who very much do enjoy wangxian both separately and together but I also consider them one of the less interesting storylines and there are relatively few scenes of theirs I reread compared to the rest of the cast.
AGREEEEEED. The show cares so much for the supporting characters and gives such life to them--as adaptations of works with such vast words SHOULD once they've been freed from the constraints of first-person or third-person-limited narration, honestly. Knowing that there's less WQ in the novel is particularly disappointing to me, bc I love her friendship with WWX, and had hoped All WWX All The Time would at least mean more mad scientist friendship time! Alas.
That said. I am going to go on a tangent because ohhhhhhhh my god, Guanyin Temple and its need for editing.
@maester-of-spreadsheets and I have compared Guanyin Temple to Act IV of a Shakespeare play. A lot of Act IVs includes a super intense scene where the characters are in a state of HIGH EMOTION as shit hits the fan and we hurtle towards the climactic action in Act V--Ophelia's mad scene, Richard II's deposition, Brutus and Cassius's breakup fight, Richard III's coercion of Elizabeth Woodville, etc. These scenes are all CERTIFIED BANGERS that hold their plays together.
However. The reason these scenes go so hard is that they're just ONE SCENE. One really long-ass scene, maybe, but "long" here is maybe 20 minutes, bc we can't chug along with the same exact level and type of intensity for much longer than and remain engaged... which is EXACTLY what happens in CQL's iteration of Guanyin Temple. Without Mingjue's corpse busting in like the Kool-Aid man to release the tension in explosive action (the blade spirit does NOT cut it unless "it" is JGY's arm) or Wangxian's confession to release tension with some levity, it's just tearful emotional reckoning after tearful emotional reckoning for THREE ENTIRE HOURS.
And like, I 100% find every plot being rehashed at Guanyin Temple more interesting than anything Wangxian have going, but it's weird to have our protagonists just sitting there spectating other people's emotional implosions for the equivalent of an entire feature-length film. Like, they tried with the curse mark thing and the Second Flautist, but all the plot permits WWX to do is scowl tearfully about these major revelations because JGY's gotta be killed by NHS via LXC.
It had me by the throat when I first watched it because all the information was BRAND NEW and I genuinely didn't know what was going to happen, but on rewatches I just get tired. Individual bits are great on their own, but as one long slog? Noooooo thank you. And the abrupt mood whiplash and confused pacing once the focus returns to Wangxian for good leaves a weird taste in my mouth.

for the ask game thing, J, A, M, I, E, S, F, O, T, B, L, because i'm cheeky
You are darling
J - Name a fandom you didn’t think about until you saw it all over Tumblr. (You don’t have to care about it or follow it; it just has to be something that Tumblr made you aware of.)
Most things my god. Critical Role. The Magnus Archive. Riverdale. Welcome to Night Vale. Bridgerton. Six of Crows. The Owl House. I could go on.
A - Ships that you currently like a lot. (They don’t have to be OTPs because not everyone has OTPs.) Friendships, pairings, threesomes, etc. are allowed.
Jamie Tartt / general happiness. If there is a person who kind of breathed on him nice one time, I want to hear about it. Jamie and the rest of the team I am particularly interested in, because while Ted Lasso as a whole is a good show, it did not often give us ensemble-hangs-out plotlines, and I love a good ensemble.
M - Name a character that you’d like to have for a friend.
Higgins!
I - Has Tumblr caused you to stop liking any fandoms, if so, which and why?
MCU. After a while I got tired of seeing the characters I liked from the comics getting watered down, and it drove me crazy to see how much fandom liked the watered down versions.
E - Have you added anything cracky/hilarious to your fandom? If so, what?
It's probably the cat thing, isn't it? Though I'm quite proud of my Richmond injury list
S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)
I just posted a very long one about Jamie and Isaac, but the long and short of it is that they send each other selfies of their outfits for the day every morning.
F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?
The first fandom I was in was Dragon Ball Z. As I am still ingesting fan content for it, I would say I am still in the fandom. So that's about 25 years.
O - Choose a song at random. Which ship or character does it remind you of?
This was vaguely rigged because of how often I've been listening to my character playlists. The song that came on is 'Passing through a Screen Door' by The Wonder Years, Little Kruta. It's not only from my Jamie Tartt playlist, but some of the lyrics are chapter titles in one of my fics.
T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending?
Answered the big one already, but for a minor stupid headcanon that I'll put up in a place of prominence: after Wembley, Higgins was informed of what happened. He was distraught for the role he unknowingly played. He delicately put word to security to let him know if any complaints were filed or needed to be filed to keep Jamie's dad off the premises. And when no complaints were filed...
...look, he's a middle manager at heart. He's used to doing what needs done without people telling him to do it or even knowing he took care of it. Unbeknownst to anyone outside of the Directors of Beboperations (plus a few favors called in),Jamie's dad is banned from a number of stadiums across the country (12 and counting).
B - A pairing–platonic, romantic or sexual–that you initially didn’t consider, but someone changed your mind.
Richard and Jan Maas. They're asshole 4 asshole. I get it.
L - Say something genuinely nice about a character who isn’t one of your faves. (Characters you’re neutral about are fair game, as are characters you merely dislike. Characters that you absolutely loathe with the fire of ten thousand suns are exempt, as there is no point in giving yourself an aneurysm over a character that you hate.)
For someone whose purpose is narrative villain, I find the character of Rupert interesting. He's charming, he's determined, he's relentless, he's socially gifted - all positive traits that double as flaws. You see why Rebecca fell for him as easily as you see why she loathes him.

wip questionnaire
@dyrewrites, thanks for tagging me! Sorry it took so damn long for me to get to it. (And get ready for tag spam because I have a backlog of tag games to play)
Answering for: The Wild Ones
What was the first part of your WIP that you created?
It was a terrible short story that started with one of the Demon Kings. I eventually decided I'd prefer an ensemble cast instead of just a story about one Demon King. That story was useful, though, because it sparked the entire world building for the planet Pandemonium, where the demons reside.
If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
I hadn't given it much thought, but after looking through all my story playlists, I feel like Providence by Foals is a good choice.
What are your favorite characters that you made? Why?
In this WiP, that is definitely Jackal. He is a complex, morally interesting character. The kind of character in a piece of media that I just love and love to hate. He's deceptive and selfish and sometimes very easy to dislike, but at the same time, he's empathetic and cares deeply for the people in his life. He's do anything for them, and all the while feels like he doesn't deserve those people or happiness because of the things he's done. The way his father treated him colors a lot of his personality, even decades later, and I can sympathize. He's a beautiful mess of a demon.
What other pieces of media do you think your fan base would share?
I have no idea. The idea that I have a fanbase or could have one is pretty wild to me.
What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP?
Fixing it post finishing the first draft. I have changed a lot as a person since starting this novel, and now it feels too big to continue. I have so many ideas and so much love for these characters, and so much I need to say and do. It's a bit overwhelming because I want to get it right for myself the first time.
Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
So many, but most of them are people >_< With a world of shapeshifters, I haven't thought too much about regular animals, but they do exist, of course. The main character, Ari, for example, had a family dog, and there are several other pets in the series; also, some encounters with wild animals in the future.
How do your characters get around? (Ex. Trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)
Cars, trains, and teleportation stations (yes, those exist). The story takes place in the real world, but the magical realms have blended with humans in innovative ways. There are many ways to transit now, but the most popular in larger cities is in the way of Portal Stations, which are basically tube like structures that you get into, tell it where to go, pay a fee and are transported instantly to your destination (or near enough).
What part of your WIP are you working on right now?
Can I say none of it?? I have been on a break from The Wild Ones since I am working on world building for another series right now.
What aspects (tropes, maybe) of your WIP do you think will draw people in?
Found family, characters with trauma, trauma bonding, werewolves, demons, magic, complex characters, and all the cool stuff that comes with an urban fantasy series.
What are your hopes for your WIP?
I would like to finish the first book's second draft before next year.
What was the first part of your WIP that you created?
If your story was a TV show, what would the theme song/intro be?
What are your favorite characters that you made? Why?
What other pieces of media do you think your fan base would share?
What has been your biggest struggle with your WIP?
Are there any animals in your story? Talk about them!
How do your characters get around? (Ex. Trains, horses, cars, dragons, etc.)
What part of your WIP are you working on right now?
What aspects (tropes, maybe) of your WIP do you think will draw people in?
What are your hopes for your WIP?

On ships, shts, and riches: long random musings
I am back with another entry. Anyway, Imentioned in my previous blog post that as much as I adore ForceBook, I do not mind if TopMew do not end up together. The reason is that I am the type of viewer who seeks fulfillment by rooting for fictional pairings that deserve each other.
On ships
I want endgames that will make me say: "Ah, they deserve each other" and it goes both ways. If the pairing is good for each other, I will definitely say "Congratulations, my favorite soft and warm fictional babies. I hope you are happily married with your cats and dogs in a homey apartment." Same way for miserable and 'problematic' fictional couples. I will definitely tell them: "You deserve each other, children. I am rooting for whatever you do after this series ends but please do not let each other go. Be toxic for each other and do not bring an 'NPC' in your relationship."
I want to root for couples because they deserve each other. Not just because they are played by a fixed ship.
I want to root for couples because they deserve each other. Not just because they are played by a fixed ship.
I want to root for couples because they deserve each other. Not just because they are played by a fixed ship.
And as Cnetz has said, important things must be said thrice.
On shxts
I want mess because Only Friends is a messy show with messy characters.
In relation to this, I know people might call me a walking contradiction because I want it to be messy but is Mew's defense lawyer but that is beside the point.
Going back, if this is a mess and P'Jojo's team got permission from the management to go all out--I hope they go all out. You know mess as in messy rooms that got featured in Clean House TV show where you get all sorts of junk piled up. Not messy as in those with staged 'clean with me' videos by influencers. That or short videos featuring a Chinese woman, whose husband's ex for some reason will visit their house, so she will throw fruits and dragon seeds on the floor and clean it with smart gadgets. I love those videos but you are getting me, right?
We are still in EP 4 and as much as I say that things will go south, I am not really sure whether it will really go south until the Earth's core. The reason--first point: the fixed ships. Yep, including NeoMark in this case. I know that the couples will end up together or just, you know not really endgame but fulfilling or open-ended. And I am not going to lie to you, I (as in me only, not you, in case you get defensive of your ship) will find it disappointing if couples end up together just because...
FANDOMS WILL GO INSANE.
Like if you take a quick look at the Only Friends YouTube comment section, most commenters will tell you that they never care for other couples and just want their favorites to be endgames or they will be mad. I mean who doesn't want to see your favorite real-life ship playing fictional characters smooching on the screen with a happy ending?
Not me if they do not deserve each other and just ended up to pacify people.
On riches
As we all know, in Only Friends, the team looked for pairings who they thought would fit perfectly for the roles--except NeoMark. The two are wild cards. Anyway, the thing with casting popular ships in an ensemble will definitely give you a sure hit--money or recognition, or recognition funded by money aka dedicated fans who will nominate and vote for selected award shows (with voting system).
However, an ensemble is a double-edged sword, especially if the fandoms involved are established and composed of shippers. For example, MSP worked because, at that time, the casts did not have core fandoms and shippers. The majority also understands that every character is essential in that show. This explains why aside from those kids being awesome performers, everyone in the cast is included in the fanmeets and tour. Even if others have a minor role.
You will barely see people saying that Ship X should be the lead instead of Ship Y and that We should skip Couple X scenes because they only want their favorite couple on screen. But in Only Friends? Ah, it's a mess. The same goes for Moonlight Chicken. 👀
As to why it is a double-edged? You are guaranteed with viewers but the headache is more insane. Directors are probably drinking right now and trying not to pull their hair over edgy fans.
In addition, I really think that the fans-production team relationship in shows, especially if composed of established ships, is always paradoxical. I have yet to watch MLC (I am sorry but it's on my watchlist) but this is very apparent in Only Friends. Paradoxical in the sense that viewers think that their favorite characters' endgame is at the mercy of the director but also think that they are over the production because some fans can get entitled and say "I will not watch your show anymore because you are breaking up my ship."
This is also true for the production team. I am sure the OF team does not think that they have total control over their craft. Sure, they have control over music scores and shooting locations but they have to take into consideration if the fans will go insane and if it is bad for business if everyone has a bad ending.
Well, I am just a normal internet user and my thoughts are just well, thoughts. People will not be affected by it. Unless you are raising your eyebrows at me now.
Yeah, it's just my tiny hopeful side of me speaking. I know business is business. At the end of the day, it's always about ships, shxts, and riches.

So. This has recently come to my attention. Here's my thoughts as an actor on the RTC debacle. This is copy/pasted and elaborated on from the "I am signing this because" comment I left on the petition. Note this take also extends to actors with invisible disabilities like Autism or ADHD, of which I am one, hi hello. It is nowhere near as hard to decently accommodate wheelchair-using and otherwise (potentially) disabled actors as folks would have you believe. I was recently in a production of The Wizard of Oz where one of my fellow ensemble members (who is a regular actor at said theater, he's in basically everything) was able to be accommodated for in both costume and blocking with relative ease. This is even accounting for quick-changes, because we did in fact have those! The most trouble I ever saw him have was that it took him a little bit longer than was ideal to get from one wing of the stage to the other through the passage behind the backdrops, but that was far from an uncommon experience for anyone in the cast since it was a fairly tight squeeze what with it being up against the wall at the back of the stage. If you've been in a small theater with this kind of passageway, you know the deal. The actor playing the Cowardly Lion had to leave the stage to vomit a good few times in the middle of a pretty intense dance number during dress rehearsals due to not processing the heat from her (not particularly bulky) costume combined with the stage lights well. I personally am not entirely sure what the full deal there was since, well... I'm not her doctor, but it was functionally making her physically unable to do the full dance number either way. Whether it was just momentarily disabling or was an actual full-on condition, instead of being whiny and shitty about it the folks in charge of the theater worked with her and eventually found a solution that worked so well that she was fine for the entire run of the show and didn't even have to sit down to catch her breath during said dance number. That solution was actually super simple- she worse a sleeveless sweater vest that'd been previously layered on top of another shirt and having an ice pack affixed to her back via some kind of strap-pouch-thing. Simple, easy, and as far as I could tell it didn't cost a cent. This was in a theater that was pretty old and needed renovations despite having already had renovations. I was freezing to death in the men's dressing room and the electrical outlets in the green room ranged for kinda bad to possibly something to actually worry about, but even then they were able to make sure that our physically disabled cast members were just as accommodated for as the physically abled ones. Any and all excuses that Arena Theater and McCarter could give are entirely invalid. It isn't hard to do the bare fucking minimum, ESPECIALLY in a fancy modern theater. @mccartertheatrecenter , DO BETTER. You write a character as physically disabled, cast a physically disabled actor, and then not only toss them to the curb when they have a quick medical complication that is easily resolved and a known symptom of their condition, but decide after that to make the physically disabled character ABLE-BODIED IN A REWRITE. This is not inclusivity. This is not helping. This is frankly a disgrace, and if I sound angry that's because I honestly am angry as well as disappointed. I'd heard about RTC and kinda wanted to see if I could catch a production of it. Now I won't. I know a bunch of other people- many of which have been long-time fans or have been positively impacted by the show in significant ways -won't be going to see it either because of this. The good news is that the only way to go from here's probably up, since this is some bottom-of-the-barrel stuff that's been pulled. Folks who care (or even just want to look like they care, I'm personally not picky), the link to sign a petition to try and help make stuff better is linked below. https://chng.it/PNTkLRkx5F

Thanks for answering my ask before. If you don't mind me asking (again), can I ask, who are your top 10 favorite characters (can be from books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......
HAHHA don't worry these asks are fun and i enjoy them so don't apologize for giving me a good time. i do apologise for taking such a long time w these asks, im actually horrible at articulating my thoughts (which is why i am not a writer HA) i think i might be forgetting some characters, or maybe i just dont have alot of faves
1. itoshi rin (blue lock)
i feel like he sticks out like a sore thumb here but he's very much no. 1... something about him being an antisocial introverted hater with abandonment issues, but also has skills to back up his arrogance and (besides all the hate he lets fester within him) actually has a pretty healthy lifestyle.
2. itadori yuuji (jujutsu kaisen)
everything about yuuji is so inherently GOOD and it both interests + pains me to see him being put through all these trials and tribulations of a dark shonen mc 😭
3. gojo satoru (jujutsu kaisen)
i think, like rin, what makes him so interesting is that he has this arrogant and disrespectful personality but then again he's literally the strongest so you cant do jack shit about it. but on the other hand he's this playful goofy (incapable) teacher who spoils his students. i also love OP (to the point it dont make sense) characters.
4. dazai osamu (bungo stray dogs)
i find his inability to be truly happy in any universe fascinating.
5. tachihara michizo (bungo stray dogs)
if i explained it would be major spoilers for s4 and s5 of bsd so i'll just say that his contribution to the plot in the recent seasons really did it for me. the jump from s1 to s4 was a KICK.
6. mikage reo (blue lock)
he's a sopping wet sock. i think this is what people call a gap moe... this perfect, highly capable and charming individual turns into the most pathetic instance of man when his best friend leaves him.
7. giorno giovanna (jojo's bizarre adventure: golden wind)
his birth origins are alr wild. his stand is wild. his battle strategies are wild. his ending is wild. he (alongside jotaro) is probably the least expressive but his personality is so unique lol. a lil rascal.
8. kita shinsuke (haikyuu!!)
its been a while since anyone has mentioned haikyuu for me but kita remains as one of my fav characters LOL i think he's just very refreshing since the cast is full of hungry teenage monsters eager to win and he's almost like a breeze of calm HAHA. the inarizaki team is also very dear to me bcs theyre packed w such cool and strong characters that interact dynamically lol
9. tsukumo yuki (jujutsu kaisen)
honestly, she was the most interesting female character in jujutsu kaisen (for me) until gege decided to trash her. her appearances from todo's flashbacks to her in shibuya were all so badass, plus shes a good example of a character type i really like that radiates strong-confident-fighter aura but isnt really the brooding/dark type... but fun! ykyk. (oot but i REALLY wanted yuki at #9 bcs of her name LOL, realistically she wouldve been at #7)
10. raiden ei (genshin impact) + raiden shogun
again, another insanely OP character that it doesn't even make sense. her lore is crazy. the second raiden quest was what got me hooked (best story quest ever lol), i honestly can't pinpoint what it is from that quest since its been a while but it changed my whole perspective on her and i've been a raiden fan since. a combination of design, personality, lore, and strength (and additionally the raiden ensemble)
honorable mentions:
kaedehara kazuha, zhongli (genshin)
higashikata josuke (jojo's bizarre adventure: diamond is unbreakable)
lelouch lamperouge (code geass)
oda sakunosuke (bungou stray dogs)

Introduction Post because I feel like it'd be good to have one of these
Hi! You can call me either Harmony or MelloCat, and my pronouns are she/they (I'm cis and don't really care much about my gender, so it's up to you on how you want to use them). This account was made to keep track of the fanart I post on my Instagram account
Here's a list of a couple of fandoms (though not all) that I'll be drawing stuff for, with the ones I'll be more active in within the tags:
Castle Swimmer
Brass and Sass/Candid Hearts (when that comes out)
Asterion/Sunset Phoenix
The Sims 2 (maybe the Sims 4 but I'm unsure)
Miitopia (though will likely be OC-centric)
Tomodachi Life (will also be OC-centric)
Stardew Valley (may also be a little OC-centric)
Glitch Productions (including SMG4) - should note that if a show for Melony comes out I will not be making anything for it
Obey Me! Shall We Date
Love Live/Ensemble Stars/BanG Dream!
Hunter x Hunter
I'll update this as time goes on. Some Miis will also be posted every now and then which will probably also fall within one of the listed fandoms
I also read a couple of other webtoons, like Unholy Blood, Cursed Princess Club, Not So Shoujo Love Story and Nevermore (there's more but I don't feel like listing them all). I'm open to talking about them if anyone is interested
I'm hoping the stuff I post is enough to drive away the people that I would normally put on a DNI list so I'm not sure If I need to include one here. Even then I am unsure if those people are kind enough to respect a DNI list so whatever
I'm also wary of Remarried Empress fans but as long as you're not one of those annoying ones who go into the comment sections of OTHER WEBTOONS and start calling other characters "Trashta," we'll be fine. Keep that stuff in your own comment section please
Other than that I think we should be good to go. Hope we'll see each other again lol

I’ve posted my first time viewing thoughts on season 1 of rebels, now here’s the same for the first half of the second season!
first of all: @intrepidmare commented that the reason why rebels animation gets a lot of flack compared to tcw is because it had a smaller team and budget and less production time, but that it improves in later seasons (hablo un poquito español, lo siento!). i should clarify, i don’t think the animation for rebels is all bad, I’m actually very fond of how much more fluid it is! familiar stuff looks really off to me right now (stormtroopers, lando, obi wan, lightsabers), newer stuff looks better (the grand inquisitor, hera). i didn’t like tcw style at first either. it took me time to get used to it, but i did. i bet that by the end of season 4, I’ll have stopped complaining about it.
Siege of Lothal duology
-they’ve stopped translating karabast into caramba in the captions. huh.
-tua seems more frightened by tarkin than vader? politicians are strange creatures no matter what galaxy you’re in I guess
-it makes sense that kanan doesn’t want to get involved in a wider scale conflict, as a Jedi he probably had more direct experience fighting in the clone wars, so he’s more disillusioned with armies and wars than hera is. of course the small scale Robin Hood stuff is more his speed. also, i love how they feel like real adults with different outlooks on life. sabine and ezra are great, but i can’t stand most teenagers (and i literally am one!)
-alright, I’m at the 10:39 mark and I’m betting now that the secret other reason for lothal’s importance is kaiburr mining. it would explain why a seeming backwater planet is so important to the empire to justify sending vader and tarkin, why there’s a Jedi temple there, and ezra finding a crystal in said temple. maybe I’m right, maybe I’m wrong.
-all this about what zeb smells like, even from himself, and i still have no idea what he smells like. bad like a wet space dog? something else?
-vader baby! i know it’s a departure from live action, but i like the red eye pieces, they seem more realistic for looking out of
-damn Vader’s tall. i keep forgetting that
-“if that doesn’t kill him what will?” “not us” kanan, you have no idea how true that is
-burning the refugee camp to the ground.. we’re pretty far away from stealing fruit noe
-the way they all go with Hera to fight vader, Hera straight up saying “alright kids do mom and dad proud”… this show was literally designed for me to vicariously experience a unified family. fellow “my dad went to get milk and never came back” kids, children of divorce, and/or people who have been disowned by their families how are we feeling. this show definitely isn’t perfect but it’s some of the best escapism for me in particular. screw that team as family but they’re just close friends, team as family found family is where it’s at
-oooo, ahsoka and anakin back in each other’s orbits. i can’t wait! this is shaping up to be a great season already
The lost commanders, relics of the old republic
-ahh, so this is where filoni gets his reputation for cameos. i can’t really blame him, since as a Star Wars fan and writer myself, i couldn’t say i wouldn’t want to write stuff with my favorite characters. since this is an ensemble show (unlike andor, per se, which benefits from focusing on andor with others in the periphery), my opinion is that it’ll work out as long as our original cast doesn’t get crowded out. aladdin bridger and the rest of his family are who I’m interested in watching at the end of the day after all!
-(I saw that rex was in this one from the episode description) I’m curious as to how/why rex and ahsoka got separated?
-I’m digging Sabine’s new hairstyle, it works for her
-i get that it’s for dramatic tension, but i don’t see why ahsoka isn’t just. telling them who they’re looking for, especially since she’s not going along with them. they don’t know him! if you don’t tell them rex is a clone at least how would they know who they’re looking for?
-sweet walker they’ve got, really reminiscent of the republic walkers. heck, that’s what it is under years of homemaking
-I really like how kanan still doesn’t trust them completely by the end of the arc. he’s moving in that direction, but order 66 is not something that can be forgiven in a day, even taking the chips into account. not being something that’s neatly resolved in an episode it gives it more weight, and kanan feels like a deeper character for it.
Always two there are
-commander fruit. I’m reminded that this show is a gold mine for expanding the worldbuilding in the produce aisle
-the grand inquisitor isn’t dead, is he. no body, cryptic final message, he’s gonna show up again.
-i like how these inquisitors are kind of incompetent. they aren’t getting a full sith course load, and they dropped out of Jedi college. of course they aren’t the best and brightest!
-i may be. unreasonably fond of zeb. i can’t really say why? he’s big. he’s purple. his older brother energy is off the charts. he survived a genocide. he’s comic relief. he smells bad. he’s literally me. he reminds me of one of my uncles. what more can i say?
Brothers of the broken horn
-man this hits a little too close to what being fifteen years old is like. ezra, you have got to get a day planner, they’re silly but they work! that’s also my advice to my ten followers. if you keep forgetting stuff, planner planner planner. no writing it down on scratch paper or making a “mental note.”
-the classic ship in distress trap. very familiar to a Trekkie such as myself, but is less common in the gffa.
-first he’s Jabba the Hutt, now he’s lando Calrissian. forget Jedi training or blaster practice ezra needs to learn how to make up fake names on the fly
-why is the empire shooting at them? they’re bad guys, but i don’t think they’re fire on broken vessels even if they happen to be on one of their checkpoints bad guys
-hondo’s jaw horns have grown with age. makes sense, but looks both strange and inconvenient
-chopper’s homicidal tendencies make him great backup
-how have none of them hit red guy? he’s enormous! he’s bigger than the broad side of a barn and moves just as slow
-fun episode, but i think they could have focused more on how ezra has changed since getting involved with the rebels. the last lines he has with kanan feel like they’re hastily trying to clean up the flaws in the writing at the last minute mark
Wings of the master
-a blockade episode, classic star wars. there aren’t as many distinct episode conventions like there are for Star Trek, but there are a few. the blockade mission is one of them.
-Hera backstory! Hera backstory! I repeat, we have a hera episode incoming!
-i hope we learn more about her childhood on ryloth during the clone wars. I’ve always been interested by the bits and pieces of Twi’lek world building I’ve read, and the ryloth liberation arc from tcw was one i liked. also, i really like hera’s character.
-kanan asks ezra “are you in” about the supply run in the phantom but the Spanish subtitle is closer to “are you with me” (i think. i think that’s how best to translate conmigo)
-quarrie’s a fun character for a one off. biased because I’m an engineering student and he’s an engineer character who actually acts similar to a real one (yes, this is a tony stark callout. we don’t act like that) also, he’s just plain charming
-now that’s a funky ship. i like it!
-why don’t the rebels divide the supplies up on multiple ships? then it would have the same flaws as a video game payload mission
-okay, so it wasn’t a full Hera Episode, but I’ll take it anyways
Blood Sisters
-sabine, the brightly painted mandalorian… selected for a mission which needs a low profile
-and the way they’re finding this courier is by asking a bunch of people in the port an unusual code? that seems like the opposite of low profile too
-ketsu’s haircut is… hilariously bad. good lord, what’s wrong with a buzz cut if you want to keep it practical?
-i like the backstory we’re getting with sabine a lot
-I’m also noticing that basically all of the human characters who aren’t imperial are poc. Star Wars is still allergic to brown eyes, which is kind of colorist (featurist? is there a term for colorism that includes physical attributes that aren’t skin tone?), but credit where it’s due. kallus is the white person who shows up the most. (I’m not including non human characters in this assessment, since coding is more finicky for them when in animation) i only noticed when ketsu took off her helmet
Stealth strike
-“gravity well projectors” look don’t take this the wrong way but this is what i mean when I say Star Wars doesn’t feel like science fiction. Star Trek would have pretended to explain it and dune would meticulously plot out how this changes warfare
-i see that this episode was set up to put Rex and kanan in a Situation. and i am totally on board this conflict is so juicy
-i had almost forgotten how much I like rex, but him knowing the emergency codes brought back memories of his clone wars version.
-i wonder if he ever met luke or leia knowing that they were padme and anakin’s children
-holy shit ezra really did sound like hera for a second when he was breaking up rex and kanans squabbling
-they keep calling ezra jabba even after they learn his real name i feel like my brain is leaking out of my ears
-Ezra’s really gotten good at using a lightsaber
-well. guess ezra shouldn’t have told that stormtrooper he wouldnt die in his escape. seeing as the ship was blown to smithereens
The future of the force
-oh there is something wrong with that baby’s face
-“if i never see one of those things again it’ll be too soon” was translated as “espero no ver otra de cosas por toda la eternidad” which directly (if I’m not mistaken) translates to “I hope to never see one of those things again for all eternity” interesting! i wonder if that means Spanish doesn’t have a more direct equivalent to the English phrase “if I never [x] it’ll be too soon?”
-I’ll remember this show as the one that taught me ayudar (to help)
-chopper the baby exploding pile of bolts
-aww, the ithorian baby is so cute. heck, the ithorians just look way cuter in the rebels style. in live action they’re much slimier (which isn’t bad either!)
-also lugar, which means place. this show is pretty good for picking stuff up since I’ve already taken a class on the basics plus growing up with it in my home, even though I was never allowed to actually acquire it
-ahsoka ex machina
-this is shaping up to be a multi part thing, so I expect that some of my questions will be answered: the empire’s presence isn’t as strong in the outer rim, same as the republic, so how are they tracking these force sensitive infants down, especially after the Jedi (and to a lesser extent the force itself) were wiped from memory? and if they’re taking babies, how many have been partially inducted into the dark side by the fall of the empire? are some of them running around, ripe for stories in which they’re villains with potential for redemption after the fall of the empire? there’s so much potential
Legacy
-no room in the budget for pajamas or blankets i see. aren’t you guys the opposite of cozy
-and this show is responsible for teaching me ghost (fantasma)! i can’t believe i forgot. and fleet (flota), and message (mensaje). don’t worry, this won’t turn into a Spanish vocab lesson!
-I was almost certain Ezra’s parents were dead, or if not would die shortly after because.. well, the same reason beru and lars had to die, it’s the classic story move. but that doesn’t diminish the emotional weight of the reveal that his parents are dead because of how excited he gets when there’s hope, and how he openly cries when it’s left him
-the shot of the plain on Lothal after the scene where Ryder is introduced is beautiful visually. natural land and skyscapes is where rebels really shines
-what a lovely episode! sad, but lovely
And this is where I’m wrapping up for now! I’m halfway through season 2, and legacy is a natural midpoint. Thank you for reading this far, making these posts is pretty fun for me :)
