A Big Round of Applause for the Chinese Giant Salamander

The Chinese giant salamander (Andrias davidianus) is one of the largest amphibians in the world, second only to the South China giant salamander (Andrias sligoi) which was only recently distinguished as a separate species. This species typically weights 25–30 kg (55–66 lb) and is 1.15 m (3.8 ft) in length, although It can reach up to 50 kg (110 lb) and 1.8 m (5.9 ft). Its anatomy is well-suited to its aquatic lifestyle; the broad, flat body allows it to creep along riverbeds, and its wide mouth allows it to gulp down any prey it might come accross. Their eyesight is very poor and as a result the eyes themselves are small. A. davidianus‘s skin is typically dark to blend in with its surrounding, and the excess wrinkles provide more surface area through which it can absorb oxygen from the water.

As their name suggests, the Chinese giant salamander is found only in China; specifically fragmented areas from Qinghai to Jiangsu and south to Sichuan, Guangxi and Guangdong. This species is entirely aquatic, and thus is most often found in the basins of the Yangtze, Yellow and Pearl Rivers. A. davidianus lives in caves or freshwater crevices, although they are also seen along lakes or open rocky riverbeds.

Part of the reason this species is so large is because they grow throughout their entire lives. Chinese giant salamanders start out as eggs, which are hatched in groups of 400-500 laid in slow-moving underwater cavities. The eggs are quite large, at a maximum size of 14–16 mm (0.55–0.62 in) after they’re laid and habe absorbed water. They take 50-60 days to hatch, and larvae emerge already resembling their parents, albeit with external gills, and are already 3 cm (1.2 in) long. The young are independent, although they typically stay in the stream they were hatched in until they’re fully grown. The gills are lost at 3 years old, although sexual maturity isn’t reached until 5 to 6 years and a length of 40–50 cm (16–20 in).

Mating occurs between mating occurs between July and September, when the water temperature reaches 20 °C (68 °F). During this time, males push sand and gravel out of their dens to clean them-- a process that can take up to a week-- and ‘shower’ regularly by moving under fast-moving currents. Females are attracted to clean dens, and once she chooses a mate the pair engage in a number of courtship behaviors including knocking bellies, leaning side-to-side, and cohabitating. After the female lays her eggs, she leaves and the male guards the eggs until they hatch. Individuals as old as 60 have been recorded in the wild, although few individuals survive past the larval stage.

Chinese giant salamanders have few predators as adults. The most common are otters, red foxes, weasels and hog badgers, although juveniles can also fall prey to large fish or even adult salamanders. To deter predators, A. davidianus secretes a white acidic, sticky substance from its skin. For the most part this species is the apex predator of its ecosystem, and feeds on insects, smaller amphibians, crustaceans, fish, and the Chinese water shrew (Chimarrogale styani). Individuals detect their prey by a combination of detecting chemicals in the water and a series of nodes along the sides of their bodies that sense vibration. When prey is located, the salamander creates a vaccum with their mouths, sucking in water and their meal.

Conservation status: The Chinese giant salamander is considered Critically Endangered by the IUCN. Primary threats include habitat loss, disease, and over-harvesting for meat. National and international conservation programs and zoos are working to raise awareness, conserve habitat, and raise captive-bred salamanders for re-release in the wild.

God Given Right

Since the beginning of time, there have been people that have shown a particular charisma that have often thrust them into leadership roles. Whether that be for a small village or tribe to vast empires that span almost the entire globe. People are drawn to them, leaning on them for strength, support and direction. In many cultures, the leaders of their societies are chosen not by the people but by God - marked in some special way because of their birth or by their accomplishments on the battlefield. Sometimes, however, there are those that thirst for that kind of role. Their ambitions leading them to do whatever it might be for a taste of that kind power.

In The DioField Chronicle, the game of thrones is alive and kicking. And in order to ascend to the top, the multiple factions that make up the world will strive to do all that they can to grasp what they think is theirs.

The opening cutscene of The DioField Chronicle is a blink and you’ll miss it introduction to our two main characters: Andrias Rhondarson and Fredret Lester. Friends to the fourth born prince, Levantia Shaytham, they were there on the fateful day when the boy was slain by assassins, barely escaping with their lives.

As the game opens up on the first mission, years have passed. Now young men, the two, along with their friend, Izelair Wigan, save a government official and soon join a mercenary group called the Blue Foxes and run by Duke Hende, a member of the Lords Council. From such humble beginnings, the game spirals out into a 20 hour long politicking romp that explores what it means to be a good ruler, the dichotomy between democracy and monarchies as well as war.

But while the game is focused solely on the story it tells about the rise of the Blue Foxes, with the revelation that it was all a plot for revenge against one imperial general, Zevatian Schugel, there is also a lot of world lore that gets dropped. Lore that would be very interesting to explore in possible future entries. After all, you can’t just drop a character that had the power of necromancy at her fingertips, not even show her body after being stabbed and expect someone such as myself not to pull that thread.

Then, of course, there’s there’s the whole political structure of the Trovelt-Schoevian Empire (we get information about how a bandit took hold of the technology of the nation of Trovelt and became the leader of a sprawling empire. How was this not further explored?), the old giants of the past that many believe to be the source of Jade, and the secrets of the magical system contained within that precious mineral. All that and, well, the somewhat cliffhanger ending that left the fate of the Kingdom of Alletain up in the air. 

But honestly, the more I think on it, the more the game mechanics hinted at Andrias’s true identity. I mean, why was he the only character that got to wield daggers and act like an assassin on the battlefield with special abilities like Shadowstep?

No other character had access to those abilities!

Still, even though the story was quite contained, I couldn’t help but wish to dig deeper into the psyches of numerous characters. Though they were touched upon, the side characters were mostly there to support our main cast. From Iscarion and his noble ideas of the people ruling themselves. Waltaquin and her desire to see the world burn. I mean, where did allt hat come from? Then, of course, there are the secrets of the Gravell Church that were lightly touched upon before the game shifts focus back to other threats - namely the Alliance and the Empire.

So many tantalising threads that could have been explored deeper but were only given a cursory glance!

My frustration, I hope, is palpable to you through the screen, dear readers.

From a graphics perspective, I liked what the studio did with what felt like handcrafted dioramas for the battlefields. Quite a bit of thought were given to the maps and so it was no burden to revisit them for side missions. The cahracter models themselves, while looking like carefully crafted clay or plasticine models were emotive enough for cutscenes although the hair looked somewhat fake. True, it limited customisation in the game but there wasn’t much need to change much of the base character models or their equipment sans different coloured weapons. And given that the game was for multiple consoles, including the Switch, it made a sort of sense not to use overly complex rendering mechanics for the game.

That aside, what I loved most was the fact that they looked like tabletop miniatures when the game zoomed out on the battlefield. Moonbreaker what? There’s a new tabletop-esque game to enjoy and its game is The DioField Chronicle.

As for the gameplay and combat mechanics, the most apt description I’ve seen floating around is that it’s basically Baldur’s Gate. Though it touts itself as a strategy role-playing game, the mechanics feel ripped from the likes of BioWare’s old games. Especially with the fact that the game pauses when you select skills or direct your characters movement from one side of the map to the other.

Fire Emblem, this is not.

And while I did initially struggle on higher levels with meeting the time limits to unlock bonus goodies for my mercenary group, I soon realised that a levelled up Ignition - granting rapidity and might - was far superior to any other strategy in stomping thorugh the battles with grunts and bosses alike. After all, in this game, it’s all about the damage output in any given second. The ‘DPS’ if you would.

Who needs a tank if everything dies in a second or two? And who needs a healer when you’ve basically killed everything before they can hurt you?

The DioField Chronicle is not a perfect game. But it’s a solid one. Especially for those that like political intrigue mixed with their high fantasy and want a mix of strategy on the side. The characters can be a mix bag but there were several that I found both relatable and likable. While Andrias initially confused me as the choice of a main protagonist - what with his playing the role of a spy and assassin and acting like a side character rather than the main (that role going decidedly to Fredret) - I slowly warmed to him. That he was the kind of the mastermind behind everything was a nice twist.

And that too is important to consider. Because while The DioField Chronicle does tell an intriguing tale of politics, it doesn’t reveal its hand too early. Instead, it provides small breadcrumbs that feeds one’s suspicions. Especially when Fredret revealed his ‘true identity’ two-thirds into the game.

FALSE: Televised Movie Special for a FINAL 3rd Season of Amphibia will not happen in mid-June 2022

FROG VALLEY, AMPHIBIA ISLAND REGION -- Almost a month after the 3rd and Final Season ended in mid-May this year in 2022, a single animated Twitter insider (Debbie) from Malaysia (not an actual real name) releasing a few of the still images, fresh and direct from the studio of Disney Television Animation (DTVA), which is not to be released anywhere to the public.

Debbie spreads a tweet like wildfires Thursday morning (June 2nd, 2022 -- Pacific local time) that the Animation team have wrapped up for the upcoming final touches in post-production, even after the said series ended. A 42-minute televised movie special, in celebration of its 3rd anniversary of Amphibia will air this year by June 18th starting at 8am (Eastern local time).

Additionally, a British singer songwriter named Edward Christopher Sheeran will feature as a guest star who was voiced per male pastor in a historic 3-way marriage event of SashAnnArcy (Sasha Waybright, Anne Savisa Boonchuy & Marcy Wu) before departing all the way back to Los Angeles, California, United States of America (U.S.A.). The new voice of Sprig Plantar was undetermined as she notes a source to our news team.

One unofficial synopsis obtained exclusively with a drafted movie special on television: *Back to Amphibia -- "Former students of Saint James Middle School (SJMS) accidentally activated a source which teleports them to the Amphibia Island Region while revisiting a place where it all once started".

The movie special claims for a Disney Channel cartoon show leads to an extensive sequel of Episode 1 back in mid-June 2019, several months before the Coronavirus Disease-19 (CoViD-19) pandemic worldwide.

Here at OneNETnews, we furtherly debunk the said Twitter insider for a televised movie special, in partnership with Tegna Inc. and WPMT-TV's FOX 43: Central Pennsylvania.

Our sources gathered the following: *A deleted tweet of one Show Creator (Dana Terrace). *The Cable Forum, as first obtained from a Forum Administrator named KyL416 (which is matched and verified with TVPassport listings in America's Eastern schedule). and *A Question and Answer Panel, moderated from a Los Angeles YouTuber via ZOOM named DeepCut who mainly owns Cartoon Universe.

The official schedules of Disney Channel as Kyl416 reported, it airs most of the show reruns until a new episode showned with "The Ghost and Molly McGee" at 9:30am (Eastern local time) by June 18th.

While on June 4th this weekend as according thru TVPassport and a deleted tweet with 'The Owl House' show creator (Dana Terrace), the episode marathon focuses a lesbian couple between Luz Noceda and Amity Blight (known as LuMity for short).

And, a YouTuber in Los Angeles named DeepCut, who moderate a panel of Question and Answer on Cartoon Universe meets one show creator (Matt Braly) and the casts of Amphibia.

Speaking to Braly via Cartoon Universe, the movie special is less likely and to be discussed at DTVA's production point: "I think about a movie a lot, and I think about the kinds of things that I would want to see and sort of like where the story is and what we have done. And I'll just tell you right now, the movie would be time traveled, the reason being that I want to see Leif Plantar and Barrel in her act with our modern day characters. I feel like, it would be the best way to kind of create a satisfying new story, even though we have this time skip, something that is felt satisfying conclusive. It will be a great way to give chaos to something you didn't even know you wanted it".

He adds during a Zoom meeting panel, he was focusing behind the scenes for its origins of the Plantars before officiating with a presumptive presidential captain of Newtopia (Andrias Leviathan): "The Plantars meeting their first descendants or Barrel getting more screen time. That stuff excites me, so if that's something you wanted to see... I'll never say, never I think to make a noise and that's interesting. It can happen. Movies are different than special, because it's not for continuation of these 3 seasons' arc. So that would be kind of the perfect way to see these characters again on this show".

So in conclusion, NO. The movie special in sequel to Amphibia's extensive first episode will not eventually aired on June 18th to Disney Channel in America. Instead, 'The Ghost and Molly McGee' regularly airs smoothly with a new weekly episodes on Saturday morning (Pacific local time).

The production team and guards will soon beefing up the security in advance, ensuring all the unauthorized persons remain off-limits for now, due to lack of informative media and trusts.

The Malaysia police turned into custody between the infringement and false information on its said movie special of Amphibia. DTVA will receive personally a monetary reward and certification per concerned if Debbie pleads guilty in Malaysian court and sentenced to 6-9yrs. in prison.

It's implied shortly after through rumors that Archbishop Joshua had Commander Yorden assassinated for stepping out of line in his faction, but with end game reveals I wonder if it was Andrias who called the hit, after all this was the event that led to Andrias' promotion in the Blue Foxes.

I wonder when it was that Andrias decided to be kingmaker. There are several conversations prior to the decision where Andrias guilt trips Fredret about the succession war. I also wonder if this added pressure contributed to Fredret snapping and Andrias ironically turning against him.

Marley & Andria (Sapphic Hours let's gooooo 💕)

Marley (upper left corner) is the main protagonist oc of the HWFAU, she's a lesbian who plays baseball and goes nowhere without her metal bat. She's been in the foster system for years now.

During her time in Hell, she basically becomes Alastor and Husk's kid (unintentional adoption on all sides there lol)

Her girlfriend, Andria (next to Marley) is a witch, one who is knowledgeable of demonic and holy forces existing (i.e. heaven and hell). Andria is pansexual. She and Marley have been dating for about a year now. Andria and Marley exchange info to each other about self defense. Marley learns how to protect herself spiritually, while Andria learns how to protect herself physically.

Lonnie & Zulee 💕

They are married to each other.

Zulee goes by She/Her/They/Them pronouns

Lonnie is Trans MtF imp who uses She/Her pronouns.

Lonnie is an imp from the ring of Wrath who moved to the Pride Ring. She works under contract as a bodyguard for Rosie

Zulee is a succubus who works for Ozzie's. They live in the Pride Ring with Lonnie.

Lonnie is a good friend of Niffty's!

Zulee is pretty good acquaintances with Angel Dust

Swiss (Swiss Cheese)

Swiss (her full name is Swiss Cheese) she gets her name from looking like swiss cheese lol

In life, Swiss was an expert assassin and swordsman. Height wise, she is about half a head taller than Alastor (excluding Al's funky dear ears lol)

Absolutely hates Vixen with a burning passion.

Vixen

Vixen is also known as the Mistress of Deceit among the Overlords. Also an abusive and manipulative piece of shit, both in life and afterlife. She will get under your skin in the way almost no one else on Hell, Heaven, and Earth can. She is rarely ever seen in public, but if does make herself known, you better run.

The one thing Alastor and Vox can agree on (as well as all the other Overlords) is not to mess with Vixen no matter what. Too bad she sometimes doesn't give either of them much of a choice at times, especially Alastor (he is her "favorite" to go after and hurt out of all the other Overlords), and by extension, sometimes she'll go after Husk too.

She becomes heavily interested when rumour in Hell has it that the Happy Hazbin Hotel is harboring an actual human child.

Vixen is essentially the "Big Bad" of this AU and her form is suppose to vaguely resemble a fox or wolf of some kind

Anywho that's it for now. I'm excited to be drawing more on this AU (and hopefully will be able to actually go through with it and not drop it halfway through like all my other aus lmao)

Also we started journaling in my art class and literally all ive written are au and fic ideas for Amphibia, specifically marcanne because yes

Like you can’t tell me a Warrior Cats au of Amphibia wouldn’t be a fun concept to play around with. Like Marcy and Sasha are patrolling the boarders of whatever clan (I was sort of thinking Windclan or Shadowclan?) and they see a farm in the distance and Marcy pauses and smells the air like “I smell some others down there!” and Sasha pauses to look for a second before turning back around and going “let’s hope they haven’t crossed into (insert clan that I haven’t decided on)” or something and then a bigger animal comes out, maybe a semi-adult fox that’s big enough for cats to be like “f u c k” if they come across one. So Sasha and Marcy are immediately trying to figure out how they can come out of the situation alive while the fox is growling in front of them. Next thing you know, Anne, a fluffy ass Maine coon (I haven’t decided on another kind of cat) tackles the fox out of nowhere and gets away from its jaws. Now she’s a Maine coon, so when her fur rises, she looks bigger than she is, so the fox is a bit put off. So Anne keeps hissing and growling and occasionally swiping at the fox until it hits the road. Anne stays like that before calming down and going “are you okay” and Marcy, a bit stunned, nods while Sasha takes a bit to process before growling “we were fine, what are you doing in our territory” and Anne looks caught off guard and more than a little annoyed like “I was in the area and could smell two cats and a fox, and then I saved your tail” AND THEN IT BEGINS

Obviously Marcy and Sasha would have clan names since, y’know, clan cats, but I haven’t decided on those just yet. Anne is one of the cats who lives on that farm that I mentioned before. She, Hop Pop, Sprig, and Polly all live there. They still have all their names because like- farm cats, not clan cats. Sprig is like the age of an apprentice cat, Polly is an older kit of course, and Hop Pop is obviously an elder. Anne, Sasha, and Marcy are like- just newly made warrior age, I would say

My whole idea was just kinda them, and other Amphibia characters turned into cats, constantly having run-ins with Anne and constantly having to report it to their leader (maybe Grime?? Idk, I haven’t thought that far yet) before the leader is like “interesting. Bring her in the next time you see her, I have some matters to discuss” because the leader wants the farm to be an area for them to take advantage of and secretly expand their territory. NOW- it has been a hot minute since I’ve read a Warrior cats book, so a lot of stuff might be flimsy or inaccurate. Also I debated having Marcy as a medicine cat, but honestly, I feel like that could both help and hurt the au. Like it would be interesting interactions between Marcy and Anne, because I do plan on making this into a marcanne thing since I don’t ship any of the other ships, but it would also minimize those interactions. SO I feel like it would be great if Andrias was the leader of whatever clan and he was still an evil cat with ulterior motives, while Grime could be deputy. Marcy wanted to be a medicine cat, but Andrias kind of *strongly* suggested that Marcy would be better as a Warrior cat, so she sadly gave up being a medicine cat

Got tagged by @izzizzels and for this procrastinating fanfic writer ask game, and immediately jumped on the chance - editing is a pain and I'll take any distraction I can get.

1) How many works do you have on AO3?

Seven! I actually have a lot more on my laptop but I’m way too insecure to ever upload them. Or I did upload them and deleted them a day later. My fic folder is a dark place.

2) What’s your total AO3 word count?

~102k.

3) How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?

I’ve uploaded fics for four fandoms: Amphibia, Dimension 20, Critical Role and The Magnus Archives (…one is not like the other). But again, I’ve written tons of short drabbles and oneshots for other fandoms. YA-books, cartoons, DC & Marvel, etc.

4) What are your top five fics by kudos?

- A Theory of Butterflies and Other Insects

Atobaoi, my beloved <3 Gen longfic, still ongoing. This roleswap AU is almost halfway done and boy am I having a blast writing this. This reimagining of the canon show takes a deep dive in exploring the girls’ flaws and strengths as they each arrive in a different place; Sasha with the frogs, Marcy with the toads and Anne with the newts. The concept in itself isn’t wholly original but I’d like to think that I’ve made it stand out with its lore, mysteries and twists. There’s still much to come.

- Late Night Vigils

I wrote this Magnus Archive oneshot around 3 am and although my perception of Daisy as a character has shifted as the podcast progressed, I still really like this surprisingly fluffy fic of her and Jon bonding over their similar trauma.

- King's Gambit

Marcy and King Andrias have a jolly good time playing chess! I’ve played chess on a national level for a couple of years and I just can’t stop peppering in those delicious metaphors.

- The Emptiness in Loyalty

Oh, this is an oldie, mostly disproven by canon at this point. Critical Role oneshot, focusing on Astrid and her relationship with an institutionalized Caleb/Bren from the point of his breakdown to his escape. It’s very bittersweet and although my writing has definitely improved, I still occasionally look at it with fondness.

- The Hare and the Fox

Queen Sasha AU lives rent free in my brain. This two-chaptered fic of a very different Marcy and Sasha reuniting after many long years is unflinchingly brutal and it was so much fun to write.

5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I always try to do that! Even just with a ‘thank you’. I get immensely excited when someone drops a comment analyzing atobaoi or theorizing about the plot, that is the best feeling in the world and I want to show how I appreciate it, even if it takes a little while to respond. Fanfic is great because the line between author and reader is so thin and I enjoy the sense of community it fosters.

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I was originally going to say The Hare and the Foxbecause it ends on a very bleak note, with few things being resolved. But then I remember the knife to the gut that is King’s Gambit. That Hurt No Comfort tag is there for a reason.

7) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

Mmmmm not really, the closest thing is a Fantasy High AU set in the world of Dragon Age.

8) Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Nope! I did get some skeptic comments when I posted the first chapter of atobaoi, but a lot of those people are still reading along and say the sweetest things whenever I update.

9) Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Nope!

10) Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes and no – very long story, very complicated. Let’s just leave it at no.

11) Have you ever had a fic translated?

I have not!

12) Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, and there are (I think) only two people I would consider co-writing a fic with, but I would feel a bit less anxious proposing marriage to them than asking them to collaborate, so. We’ll see.

13) What’s your all time favourite ship?

I’m not much of a shipper! If you’d point a knife at me I’d probably say Perc’alia or Shadowgast, but mostly because of their fantastic dynamics rather than the romantic aspect. Romance in itself is not very interesting to me.

14) What’s a WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

* stares longingly at my extremely self-indulgent post-Night Marcy Memory Loss fic *

15) What are your writing strengths?

Creating coherent narrative arcs, creative plot twists, and emotional scenes. I tend to focus a lot on the (overall) plot of my stories and make sure they’re sturdy without any holes or weaknesses.

16) What are your writing weaknesses?

Characterization and detailed descriptions. This is partially because I am not a native English speaker and sometimes struggle to get a good grasp on the language.

17) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I’m not a fan of the Gratuitous [Insert Foreign Language] trope, mostly because in my opinion a lack of research and/or linguistic awareness often leads to butchered language, which always bothers me a lot. Translation footnotes or parentheses, while sometimes necessary, don’t help out much and often distract from the pacing.

When writing dialogue between two characters, one of whom has a second language, I rely on my own experience, throwing in a word or two in situations where it would make sense while the reader is still able to follow the conversation. When two characters are discussing something in their native language I just describe they’re talking in their native language.

18) What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Oh gods, please don’t ever ask about that phase of my life, but Voltron. To look at those unfinished fics in my folder is like gazing into the abyss.

19) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

The Tales A Dead Man Tells takes a close runner up, but after all the effort and love I’ve put into it, A Theory of Butterflies and Other Insects comes first place. I started dipping my toes into the Amphibia community after posting this fic and the outpour or support and enthusiasm was heartwarming. I’m really glad to be here and I can’t wait to show you all what's in store.
