a thought popped into my brain while i was reading your loooong post about filler episodes in media, and it is unfortunately quite a long thought >:D

whenever i'm writing out my SGZ! x TZE! fanfic, this thought is always at the forefront of my mind while writing:

Cassie: this Astral Plane is so cool! wow, there's so many things that are so similar to mine yet so different!

Ciara: what the FUCK why is everything in this Astral Plane trying to KILL ME????

you mentioned that characterization is really important in every story, ESPECIALLY in filler arcs, and that if you make a compelling character, they will make the story much much better, regardless of the action happening around them. whether it be plot related or not, good characterization will always make a good scene and be interesting to watch/read.

i tried to showcase characterization of the characters as much as possible; cassie is awestruck and eager to learn everything about another world, while ciara is constantly on survival mode, viewing everything as a potential threat. and yet, both of them display a sense of wonder towards each others' astral planes, both of them allowing their guards to come down and let their curiosity take hold. i try to showcase this multiple times; cassie attending capricorn's ball and wanting to learn more about how the TZE! Astral Plane functions and ciara briefly losing her survival instincts to observe the skymirror circus.

i think a lot about the plot structure of the SGZ! x TZE! fanfic, mainly because it's way different from the other fanfics i've written in the past. it is in fact mostly comprised of filler, because i really wanted to showcase how cassie and ciara behaved in scenarios that aren't life-or-death threats, which i imagine is what they're in most of the time!

lore and plot points are indeed sprinkled throughout these fillers, in the form of cassie and ciara finding out snippets of the history behind each others' Astral Planes. but they are mainly filler, simply because i think it would be fun to watch these characters that normally have a shitload of burdens weighing upon them get to experience a brief respite from those responsibilities and just enjoy themselves.

and i think it's also fun to see how they react to being put into completely out of the ordinary scenarios. how would cassie react to being threatened by a gang of pirates? how would ciara react to being forced into a dance-off with a group of birds? (definitely not spoilers for future chapters of SLM lmfaooo)

plot-driven fanfic is amazing, of course it is, but i think there's definitely some untapped potential in domestic/fluff fanfic. it's fun to see these characters sad or going through tough shit, but isn't it also fun to see these characters just have a good time?

anyway that's my ramble and my thoughts on filler arcs specifically on fanfic, i now need to go work on my english project :DD

Ah, the consequences of my actions! (I'm kidding, thank you for reading my long ramble about filler :D I hope it was useful or at least interesting!) Apologies in advance for the length of this response in turn though lol

I can definitely see the parallels! I do find it funny that both thoughts you've described for Cassie and Ciara here are also two thoughts that Cassie has had about her Astral Plane, especially at the start. She definitely has curiosity about the world and wants to know more, but she has quite a few near-death experiences and many of the residents seem to be after her in one way or another. It's not that Cassie lacks a survival instinct, but she has to learn the "rules" of the Astral Plane rather quickly to survive at all, or have others bail her out in that moment. Some aspects of her naivety in relation to the Astral Plane are directly challenged as well.

In turn, I can definitely see how Ciara's survival mode comes into play. I'd imagine that if she and Cassie were in an equally unfamiliar place together, they'd approach the unknown in different ways just based on their past experiences. Cassie might be able to help Ciara not be as fearful of some things, but Ciara might be able to help Cassie exercise more caution than she might have otherwise. And then, eventually, they'd both be able to tap into each other's sense of curiosity and wonder once the fear of danger has subsided a bit.

That's an interesting note about fanfic too, I don't write it myself but I can see how writing this particular one would be different from how you'd write others, especially more action-based ones. This crossover specifically explores a lot of stuff that DOESN'T happen in their respective stories, or at least not as much comparatively, and highlights similarities and differences with it instead. Neat stuff!

And I absolutely agree, simply exploring characters outside of action or plot relevance (in fanfic or otherwise) is not only fun, but can be really refreshing for both the author and the audience. Recently I "haha just kidding...unless?"ed myself into making a what-if scenario canon in my current draft of Starglass Zodiac, and I think the script is far better for it. There's a lot of fun moments between characters that previously wouldn't have interacted otherwise, and also it ties a lot of stuff together in a way that I really like.

How would Cassie react to being threatened by a gang of pirates? Well I'll have to see what Columba's crew has to say about that in my story, but I am very curious to see how you write it with your pirate gang! Looking forward to it :D Same for Ciara's dance-off, that sounds hilarious.

Knight Squad on Nickelodeon was good and yall slept on it

like so much of the cast, the main cast including the lead girl WHO WAS A PRINCESS, was portrayed by black actors, and Another actress was Latina, like  it’s hard to find kid shows that deliver more than token characters, but this show delivered representation 

The friendships were all so pure, and the characters were all unique in their strengths and that made them work as a team without anyone being stereotyped for anything

Even the ‘mean girl’ was just misunderstood and had a lot of good moments and her relationship with her ‘sidekick’ is super healthy a mutually supportive and not abusive like so many mean girl tropes

There is magic and martial arts and cool medieval style costumes and princess dresses

Boys comfortable with expressing their emotions not just as a joke, and girls confident in their strengths and not down playing their abilities 

I especially love how the main six kids are all clearly Bisexual 

But also like you can tell the difference between the types of relationships 

Like Prudy/Ciara and Warwick/Arc are all ‘in love’ but in the best-friend way, like the highest form of love for your bestfriends

While Sage and Buttercup are girlfriends that don’t realize they’re dating 

And Warwick and Prudy are wlw x mlm solidarity in a purely platonic way

While Arc and Ciara are wlw x mlm in a potential for romance kind of way

knight squad concept notes + tiara thief canon

earlier this week, i reached out to sean w. cunningham, one of the creators of knight squad (as well as the thundermans and julie and the phantoms). i just wanted to say thank you for creating knight squad and tell him it meant a lot to me. to my surprise, he actually responded and he was so nice. he told me he’d reach out to me again later.

then, last night, he followed up! and he sent the following messages (providing image descriptions since tumblr kills the quality rip):

just a heads up i haven't quite finished wrath of the druids somehow. i know, i know, i'm slacking lol. however i AM aware of the ending so i will answer to the best of my ability

first impression

i actually made a post about this because i loved her so much from the first! eivor following her singing to find her and then immediately getting into a fight to protect her? SPECTACULAR. ROMANTIC. i loved how witty and bold ciara was from that opening scene. also when eivor runs up asking if she's ciara and ciara, clearly checking her out, says, "how much trouble can i be in at once?" MA'AM

impression now

i adore her. so much

my first impression was right. she has such a sharp wit and uses it throughout the story to be charming and charismatic, to make quick humorous remarks, and deftly navigate politics. she also openly expresses herself. she disagrees with flann. she tells eivor when she's wrong. she speaks her mind, but always artfully. also so incredibly talented?? a singer, an instrumental musician, a poetess, good with a knife. what more could you want??

as part of the story, she is such an intriguing character. i was really drawn in by the way she chooses her words so carefully yet simultaneously speaks unabashedly when no one else will. she's full of contradictions: quick with a joke but carrying some sadness, a pagan who loves her homeland serving a christian king, flirting with eivor and then teasing her for openly returning the favor, clearly very intelligent but known for getting herself into trouble. it all made me want to know more about her. just a powerful onscreen presence.

i know she turns out to be the antagonist and i'm very interested to see exactly how that is accomplished

plus, i simply can't leave out how beautiful she is <3

favorite moment

the TENT SCENE before she performs as the court poetess in the royal ceremony. the chemistry between her and eivor in that scene. wow. holy smokes. wow.

i also love the scene where she and eivor talk on the ledge in the castle after a battle. they sit there taking in the beautiful night and ciara opens up about her connection to ireland and her mother. it's so soft my heart

honorable mention to when ciara insists on staying at barid's grave to honor him

idea for a story

again, i haven't finished wotd, so i'm a bit limited on this question. i have to say i'm always a sucker for enemies to lovers. or lovers to enemies to lovers, as it may be lol. but also i would really like some eivor x ciara fluff. something sweet and domestic

unpopular opinion

i honestly think ciara was the best romance option in all of valhalla. she grabbed my attention like no one else. the chemistry just jumped out immediately. and her character was given a lot of depth

favorite relationship

romantically, eivor!! as a romance option, like i said, i thought ciara's arc was incredibly well executed. i've already noted the attraction from their first meeting. but they really gave us everything. every interaction between eivor and ciara was BRIMMING with lingering glances, smirks, flirtatious dialogue. even when they were just talking about missions for flann. i've already mentioned two of my favorite moments, the tent scene and the post-battle scene. also the actual romance scene at the waterfall was lovelyyyy. just so intimate and natural. tbh everything about their relationship felt very natural, like they met and immediately had the easy repartee of lifelong friends

platonically, i really thought the respect she showed for barid was so sweet. the way she stayed to sing at his grave.. i cry. i wish there'd been a bit more interaction between them

Hi.....If you don't mind me asking who are your top 10 fav anime couple (don't have to be canon)? And why you like them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....

I just saw this ask and i nearly forgot about it, so sorry for the very late replay.

My top 10 couples switches a lot, but if I had to pic 10 current ones I would go with these:

1. Ash x Eiji (Banana fish)

They are just perfection. I know they are soulmates, but the way they healed each other in a way no one else would have been able to, is just so precious to me. They came from different worlds, but they fell in love despite it. Nothing will ever top the love I have for these two.

2. Yusei x Aki (Yu-Gi-Oh 5ds)

This is my favorite couple from any Yu-Gi-Oh series. I just love that Aki was such a powerful female lead and had a very good arc the first 2 seasons. They helped each other grow - Yusei taught Aki that not all people are afraid of her and that she could have friends who would have her back no matter what and Aki taught Yusei that he didn’t have to shoulder things on his own and that she believed in his decisions.

3. Erza x Jellal (Fairy tail)

If i could pick any fairy tail couple that I love, it would be jerza. They’ve been through so much together and apart for so long, but clearly pining the whole time, that there was no way that I wouldn’t ship them. I’m glad they seem to be heading in a couple direction in the manga now.

4. Reki x Langa (Sk8 the infinity)

These two are just the red x blue couple that actually came true. I really think those two were a couple at the end of the anime or at least had feelings for each other. Also it’s the first sport anime with a red x blue couple that went canon, so they will always have a special place in my heart.

5. Naruto x Hinata (Naruto)

Honestly I liked Naruhina from the beginning, probably because I relate to Hinata so much. I’m quite shy and blush when I take to a person that I like, so I was thrilled to see that she got the guy she loved for so long in the end. 

6. Dabi x Hawks (MHA)

Okay I know I will get some shit, because of this ship and before anyone comes screaming to me: Yes I know in the canon universe they would be toxic and never work out, but LISTEN the potential they would have if a small factor was different is insane!! If Dabi would be a hero they would be no doubt working together for a lot of cases and if Hawks would be a villian they could join forces to take down hero society. Just so many possibilities, because in the core they have nearly the same trauma about having parents who neglected them and used them for their own goals instead of letting their children thrive. Also Enemies to lovers is an amazing trope.

7. Buck x Eddie (9-1-1)

No clue when buddie started to grow on me, but I just love their dynamic from Enemies (on Buck’s side) to friends to best friends to co-parents to maybe lovers? I like how they built a litte family unit together with Eddie’s son Christopher and they are just so good for each other. Buck is what Eddie needs and the other way around. I could write a meta on this two and their dynamic and I really hope the show will make them canon eventually.

8. Julie x Luke (Julie and the Phantoms)

What is better than the relationship between a ghost and a girl that bound through music? I can’t think of a lot, but honestly I love that Julie and Luke aren’t immediately drawn to each other, but have to figure out the others past first. Them having similar taste in music and killer voices is just a plus.

9. Yuto x Keigo (Dream festival)

Okay this is such a niche ship, that no one knows about I feel like and I don’t know why. Their interaction in the anime is amazing. They grow together and learn slowly about the others personality and pasts. Even through there are almost no fanfics or anything, I rewatch dream festival almost only for them.

10. Ciara x Ben (Days of our lives) and Korra x Asami (Legend of Korra)

I had such a hard time picking No. 10 that I choose two ships that I think deserve that spot. I love Korrasami because it was subtil until the very end of season 4, but it was clearly there and I was so excited when the creaters confirmed it to be canon. I just love how badass these ladys are together and apart, but they are clearly very important to the other and they show that all through season 3 and 4.

Ben and Ciara on the other hand are a classic good girl x bad boy couple, but it was so perfect, because the way they got to know each other for the first time was so dramatic, but genuine at the same time and I know they are the classic soap couple and have a lot of ups and downs, but I know they will always come back to each other because of the foundation they built together.

A few honorable mentions would be: Judai x Johan (Yu-Gi-Oh Gx), Klance (Voltron), Tai x Sora (Digimon), Clarke x Lexa (the 100), Aomine x Kise (KnB), Merlin x Arthur (Merlin) and Serena x Ash (Pokemon)

I watched Knight Squad bc I'm an Owen Joyner simp + I was rewatching Disney shows before watching JATP & all I have to say is that the ending kinda sucked (naturally), but the series was pretty good
