“ATLAS” PART 2 (Continued) I am fascinated by every thing that Atlas does. He is magically every guy I’ve ever dreamed of, yet better. He enraptures the very essence of “boyishly cute and masculinity, too” that this very blog is name for. Whenever I see something attractive in a guy, somehow inevitably Atlas has within him that very infectious quality to go along with everything else he seems to possess. I think if I were to get married or date Atlas, I’m sure I wouldn’t have the desire to cheat. They say everybody looks and I imagine that is true. If I were in a relationship I would be 100% faithful. But if I saw a guy like Atlas, I would undoubtedly look. I’m human and am easily turned on as every horny teenage boy is. But if Atlas were the one I was in a relationship with, I wouldn’t have to look for whatever it is that differentiates the two, Atlas has it and represents it better than the other boy can.

I’m biased because Atlas is my dream boy. Even before I knew of gay or straight, I was attracted to boys with dark hair and green eyes that were masculine and had a sense of whimsical and mystical qualities that were like super powers. There’s something so authentic about this limited group of boys that exist that it makes it impossible to not be a better more authentic version of yourself. He by his very presence imbibes a sense of self-worth that demands that you be worthy of that in which you sense, and that is the real you. Anything less would be hard work, because being one’s self is the easiest thing to do on planet Earth. But to be something other, than that will be easily revealed and the cost will be in every way enormous. You’d lose your place and that is difficult to find again, if ever. You’d lose your self-worth which is the most precious thing that you can ever have. The process of decline might be slow, but eventually you’ll lose Atlas. His loyalty to you is unquestionably one the most important things that he values in himself, but if you not true blue loyal in return and you’ve corrupted the authentic version of yourself, the one that’s the easiest thing you can do in your lifetime, then whatever of that authentic self that remains will do the courageous thing and admit to Atlas what it is that is going on. He’ll stick around and be there every step in your journey and happily greet your return with the giddiness and romance that it deserves, but you’ll be in your mind damaged goods. So, best to present yourself as the real you from the get go. AS I’m nearing the cutaway that leads to the beach hideaway, I realize that all of my thinking of authenticity and its importance is the very reason as to why I never tried to befriend Atlas. It’s an easy assumption to presume it’s because of the I’m gay-He’s straight conundrum, but that’s a lazy approach to it. Does that mean that I will never be friends with a straight guy? What kind of living is that? To disqualify a friendship simply because of that is lunacy. What’s the big deal about who someone loves and what does it have to do with a friendship? It’s like saying you won’t seek the friendship of somebody because of something that they had no control of at birth. Be it blond hair, or brown eyes. Be it the color of their skin or anything else that just is, that’s a really unfortunate way to live because you are choosing that of which they did not choose. No! It’s taken me four years to mature enough to understand that I wasn’t mature enough then to become his friend. I’m not insinuating that he would have judged me, but I wasn’t where I needed to be when the possible love of my life appeared. I would have screwed up or thought that he had, because I didn’t know shit about life. I was immature. Had he also been immature than our lives together could have begun then. But, by virtue of his maturity well in advance of mine, I unconsciously decided to stay away and not do possible harm that would be impossible to make up for. I’d rather he think I’m a conceited standoffish jerk than watching me trial and error myself into a person who needed guidance, his guidance. The eventuality is I would have become a version of his creation, and not of my own. Because I wouldn’t be mature enough to know what the heck is flying, I’d become dependent on him and that’ll probably lead to hostile dependency. If familiarity breeds contempt, than my reactions and choices would be familiar because they were formed on the foundation he so generously gave me when I asked for it. I wanted to be just like him. But, what I really needed was to become just like me. Who better to apply for the job opening of being me? I was available and I had a head start being that I am me so no additional studying is required. Besides, I like the privacy I have and didn’t want to share it back then. I had my friends and confidants, my parents, my dreams and my absolute crush on Atlas. Four years and all of that hasn’t changed much. I’m eternally grateful for that. (continued)

sokka trying to get katara to give up on her waterbending bc it could get her killed. and katara refuses to give up and continues to practice anyway. bc sokka and katara represent the survival of both the people and the culture. sokka had the safety of their people thrust upon him by his dad, while katara is the only one in their tribe that can carry the weight of their culture. both are heavy burdens, and they're struggling with their roles bc they're just two kids trying to rebuild in the wake of genocide. but they refuse to give up, bc that's what the story is about.

there are so many amazing and powerful benders in atla but what i love about zuko is that whether or not he can use his bending in that moment has zero (0) bearing on how much he’s going to absolutely kick your ass. no bending? that’s fine - he’s got swords. no swords or bending? that’s fine - he’s literally just going to beat you up. if you’re REALLY unlucky then you get all three. as a treat.

okay because I'm seeing some misinfo, here's the story on the Key Bridge collapse

What was the Key Bridge?

The Francis Scott Key Bridge (also called the Key Bridge, the Beltway Bridge, and the Outer Harbor Crossing) was steel-arch continuous-through-truss bridge spanning the Patapsco River south of the Baltimore Harbor. The bridge took 5 years to build and cost an estimated $145 million ($735 million in today's dollars). The full bridge project (including approaches) was 10.9 miles long, but the stretch over the Patapsco was 1.6 miles long and 4 lanes wide, and comprised a length of I-695, the Baltimore Beltway. It traveled between Hawkins Point and Dundalk, and in addition to the I-895 Harbor Tunnel was the primary way for Marylanders to cross from the Eastern Shore to the West. The bridge carried an estimated 11.5 million vehicles per year. There is a lane for ships to pass under the Key Bridge with enough clearance.

Was it structurally sound?

The bridge received its latest inspection in 2022 and received a 6/9 score, which is considered "fair" by federal standards. There was a concern with one of its columns, which was downgraded from a health index of 77.8 to 65.9, but it is not clear yet if this was one of the columns struck by the ship. In 1980 the bridge was struck by a different cargo ship which destroyed a concrete support structure, but the bridge itself was unharmed. There is as of yet no evidence that the bridge collapsed because of poor condition. Experts say the lesson to be learned is about the size and weight of modern cargo ships, and that the bridge was not to blame. Engineers have noted, however, that the bridge's piers lacked protective devices such as fenders.

What was the ship?

The MV Dali is a container ship flying the Singapore flag. It is owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd. and operated by Synergy Marine Group Ltd. The ship is currently being chartered by Maersk, a Dutch shipping company. It was built in 2015 by Hyundai. The ship is 980 feet long and 157 feet wide. The ship's gross tonnage (its internal volume) is 95,128 tons (190,256,000 pounds). Its deadweight (the weight of cargo it can carry) is 116,851 tons (233,702,000 pounds). The ship was carrying 3,000 containers. The engine is a MAN-B&W 9S90ME putting out 41,480 kilowatts (55,626 horsepower).

Over its lifetime the Dali has been inspected 27 times, and only 2 faults were ever found. On June 27, 2023 the Dali was held in port in Chile due to an issue with the propulsion system. According to an inspector the pressure gauges on the heating system were "unreadable". The fault was fixed before the ship left port.

The Dali is crewed by 22 Indian nationals including 2 maritime pilots.

What happened?

The Dali arrived at the Port of Baltimore on March 23, 2024. At 12:44 AM on March 26, 2024 the Dali left port, beginning its journey to Colombo, Sri Lanka. At 01:26 AM the ship suffered a "complete blackout" and began to drift out of the shipping lane. It is not yet known what caused the electrical failure. The backup generator did not power the propulsion system. At around 01:26 AM the crew of the Dali sent a mayday distress call to the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) informing them of the loss of power and that a collision with the Key Bridge was possible. The anchors were dropped as an emergency measure to attempt to slow or stop the vessel. At the request of one of the pilots traffic flow over the bridge was immediately halted. Black smoke was seen coming from the Dali, which experts believe was the result of the crew managing to restart the power system to regain some maneuvering capability.

At 01:28 AM the Dali, traveling at 8 knots (considered to be a fast speed) collided with a support strut beneath the Key Bridge's metal truss at the southwest end of the bridge. A Baltimore resident said he heard the collision and that it "felt like an earthquake". Emergency teams began receiving 911 calls at 01:30 AM, and the Baltimore Police Department were alerted at 01:35 AM. One of the officers present radioed that he was going to go onto the bridge to alert the construction crew as soon as a second officer arrived, but the bridge collapsed seconds later.

What was the damage?

The Key Bridge has completely collapsed. The metal truss relies on structural tension from the bridge itself to maintain its rigidity. As soon as one of the support columns was destroyed, the rest of the bridge quickly followed.

The damage to the Dali is reported as minimal. The ship was impaled by the bridge's structure above the waterline, but has maintained watertight integrity. The crew has not reported any water contamination from its 1.8 million gallons of marine fuel. 13 containers carrying potentially hazardous material were damaged, and are being inspected by a team of Coast Guard divers. At least 5 vehicles including 3 passenger cars and a cement mixer were detected underwater, but authorities do not believe they were occupied

Who was hurt?

The crew of the Dali reports no casualties, except one crewmember who was hospitalized for minor injuries. There was a crew of 8 construction workers on the Key Bridge filling in potholes. 2 were immediately pulled from the water by rescue crews, with 1 being rushed to emergency care and the other reporting minor injuries and refusing treatment. The hospitalized worker has since been discharged. 1 of those rescued was Mexican. The remaining 6 remain missing. Of those 6, 2 have been identified:

Miguel Luna from El Salvador

Maynor Yassir Suazo Sandoval from Honduras

Of the remaining 4, 2 are Guatemalan nationals. Neither have been identified, but the Guatemalan Foreign Affairs Ministry has stated that they were a 26-year-old from San Luis, Petén, and a 35-year-old from Camotán, Chiquimula. The other 2 are presumed to be Mexican.

Rescue Efforts

The Coast Guard was immediately deployed for search-and-rescue operations. Military Blackhawk helicopters were seen over the river. Rescue efforts were ended at 07:30 PM on March 26, 2024 due to darkness, fog, and cold temperatures. Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said "Based on the length of time that we've gone in the search, the extensive search efforts that we put into it, the water temperature -- at this point, we do not believe that we're going to find any of these individuals still alive". Recovery operations resumed at 07:30 AM on March 27, 2024 with all 6 workers presumed dead.

No divers have yet entered the water underneath the bridge. Supervisory Special Agent Brian Hudson of the FBI's Underwater Search and Evidence Response Team said "the debris field is pretty sizable and I know that’s why they’re hesitant to send divers down because some of the debris is still shifting, the heavy weight of the rocks". The FBI has deployed Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) equipped with cameras and SONAR.

Aftermath

At 05:08 AM on March 26, 2024 Transportation Secretary Pete Buttegiege posted on X (formerly Twitter):

"I’ve spoken with Gov. Moore and Mayor Scott to offer USDOT’s support following the vessel strike and collapse of the Francis Scott Key bridge. Rescue efforts remain underway and drivers in the Baltimore area should follow local responder guidance on detours and response."

At 07:30 AM on March 27, 2024 President of the Maryland State Senate Bill Ferguson posted on X (formerly Twitter):

"Over 15,000 in the Balt region rely on daily operations at Port of Baltimore to put food on the table. Today, with Del. @LukeClippinger and colleagues representing Port, we are drafting an emergency bill to provide for income replacement for workers impacted by this travesty."

At around 09:40 AM on March 26, 2024 Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott declared a State of Emergency to take effect at 10:30 AM March 26, 2024, and to last 30 days. Baltimore's Emergency Operations Plan was put into effect.

More than 1,000 personnel from the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have been deployed to assist with clearing the debris and rebuilding efforts. President Joe Biden has pledged that the federal government will pay for the entire reconstruction of the bridge.

Jennifer Homendy, the chair of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has recovered the Dali's data recorder, and will be inspecting both the Key Bridge and the Dali to determine the cause of the crash and the collapse. She says the investigation could take up to 2 years to complete.

Was it intentional?

According to William DelBagno, head of the FBI's Baltimore field office: "There is no specific or credible information to suggest there are ties to terrorism in this incident".

Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas said: "There are no indications this was an intentional act".

At least 3 people have been killed in accidents related to ships operated by Synergy in the past 6 years. In 2018 a person on board a Synergy ship in Australia was killed in an accident relating to the vessel's personnel elevator. In 2019 an officer aboard a Synergy vessel in Singapore fell overboard while performing maintenance. In 2023 at least one sailor was killed when a Synergy ship collided with a dredging ship in the Philippines. In the first two cases safety inspectors noted that proper safety procedures had not been adhered to.

Little Zuko and little Azula love Lu Ten. They love Lu Ten so much, they successfully smuggled themselves into Lu Ten's baggage when Lu Ten left to go fight.

Lu Ten, meanwhile, finds out that his little cousins snuck along for the ride way too late.

He knows they're gonna lose the fight.

He isn't about to let a couple of little kids die like that, murdered by Ba Sing Se soldiers too hyped up by war.

He may have been prepared to put his own life on the line, but he's not sacrificing Zuko or Azula's. But he also knows that if he flees the field with them, then Ozai will absolutely use that as an excuse to "punish" his own children.

Lu Ten does not want to know what that punishment entails. He is, in fact, more terrified by whatever it may be than the literal war raging outside his tent.

So.

He swallows his pride for his country, his love for his father, and his dreams of being a successful general.

He grabs the kids, fakes his death, and runs.

Once again thinking about the ATLA post series (not in continuity with the comics) fanfic I'll never write that follows Azula going to work in Iroh's tea shop in Ba Sing Se and her ensuing struggle with psychosis and realizing she was in the wrong and is just as much the victim of an abusive parent as Zuko was.

In this story Iroh tries to help her and at first she HATES it. She hates his kindness, she hates the sadness on his face when he sees her struggling, she hates all of it. At one point she snaps at Iroh to stop pitying her and he says, "Don't you know the difference between compassion and pity?" And she snaps back that they're the same thing and he replies, "You're wrong, Azula. Pity is simply feeling sad for someone's circumstances. Compassion is the desire for their circumstances to get better." And it hits her like a ton of bricks that this man, unlike her father, wants what's best for her. He's only ever treated her with kindness and she's disrespected him and called him weak for it and it's the most actual love she's ever received from a father figure in her fifteen years of life. And she wants nothing more than to cry in his arms but she can't yet because she doesn't know how to show weakness in front of anyone because of what her father did to her.

I see a post floating around sometimes where someone said that as a child, Azula is the scariest character, but as an adult, she's the saddest and I agree. She was 15. She deserves a redemption arc.

It was his 18th birthday and I received this text. I recognized him, of course. I stared at him since I first saw him freshman year, four years ago. I was too nervous whenever he was around, so I just never became friendly with him. He was a fellow student, but I can’t even say we were acquaintances. I knew his name is Atlas. I didn’t think he knew my name or that I even existed, to be honest. So receiving this text with no accompanying words made me think it was sent to me accidentally. I recognized the spot where he was. It was a favorite of mine that very few were aware existed. It was a bit off the beaten path and so I thought maybe it wasn’t accidental. How’d he get my number? It seemed that some effort was put into this by Atlas and so I decided to head there on my bike. ATLAS PART ONE Is it possible that Atlas had caught me looking at him? That hasn’t been for a while since I figured I was so out of his league, besides the fact that I’m gay and he is straight. He must be straight since he is popular with all the popular girls and his friendship group are mostly into sports like he is. I’ve seen him play basketball and he’s pretty good. At 5’10” he’s by far not the tallest, but he uses what he has as an advantage. He plays baseball, too. As a sophomore, he was only 5’7” and played shortstop. There too he was quick and instinctive and had what’s called “sneaky power” as he had the third most home runs in the league. I liked boys that knew how to use the cards dealt to him as advantageous, rather than complain about it. What I really dig about Atlas is how intense he gets when he is focused on whatever task is at hand. Whether positioning himself at shortstop as the pitcher delivers a pitch, or reading a book. He is laser focused when he’s talking with his friends. It’s like they’re the only person in the world as he listens to whatever is being spoken to him. Whether it’s a joke, in which he laughs and enjoys with a gusto and love of life like no other, or something serious that he seems to know how to best react. Sometimes a friend just wants to be heard, other times they are seeking a solution. He is adept at whatever comes his way. His girlfriends have always spoken kindly of him. That’s why I’m thinking, hoping really, that maybe he may play for the other team, my team. Doubtful, but this photo from my hideout is too curious. I check my email and I see a Facebook wish your friend a birthday greeting. The friend is none other than Atlas Cunningham. I pedal along with just my thoughts to keep me company. I stop, I need a moment to think. I fish the phone from my pocket and click on messages. It is still there. I think of how absolutely cute and adorable he is. I always loved his shape of his body. The wide shoulders and how his chest narrows at the hips. His belly is flat and his waist can’t be more than 27”. I like that he is strong with undeniable strength, yet skinny enough that his clothing always seems to be sliding off of his body. It’s like he is nude underneath the clothing, which by definition we all are. But, he seems to inhabit another dimension that separates his body from his clothes. A dimension I wouldn’t mind being a part of. That’s not to say his clothing doesn’t fit him and is oversized. On the contrary, everything he wears appears as if it were custom for him that very morning by the greatest tailor in the world. My favorite outfit for boys is the standard jeans, sneakers, tee-shirt, sneakers and ankle socks. It may sound simple and that’s because it is. But, that doesn’t mean it’s simple to pull off. (RESTAURANTS are said to have a chef make a simple order of scrambled eggs to determine whether to whether the jib interview will continue) I’d say the same is true if I were to judge a boy worth as a model. Atlas would pass that test so easily. He takes a pair of jeans and magically they are transformed as the greatest work of art once they’re on him. He makes them his very own.
