It’s while you’re playing with dinosaurs on the floor that something comes crashing into your grand fight seen. You boggle a moment, caught off guard by the sleek white train that’s now knocked onto its side thanks to your mighty Tyrantrum. But you pick it up, and glance around the room to see who lost their toy.
All the other children are playing on their own. You can see a gaggle playing house, the father loudly scolding the “dog” for peeing in the house, thus sending the rest of the “family” into heaps of giggles. There are a few reading, buried in blankets and pillows as they smile at their picture books. And then there’s a lone boy, stood over by the corner, away from most everyone.
He stares at you, eyes flickering between your face and the train you hold. His smile is tight and looks painful.
You stand, and stride over to him. The boy jumps, head ducking away from your returned stare, only to jolt once more when you offer him the train back.
“Here!” You chirp, happy to have helped. “Your cool train ran into my Tyrantrum and had a big crash! But I’m super cool and smart, so I was able to fix it!”
Shaky hands take the train from you, and your grin wavers at the sight of the boy slowly turning a deep pink. You grow a little nervous, especially with his silence.
“Um, okay!” You say, false cheeriness lacing your words. “Bye!”
You race back to your own toys, shouting at Kevin when he tries to steal your Aerodactyl.
You don’t talk with the boy again, but whenever you glance his way, you can see him staring at you still. Weird! But you try not to mind it.
You’re outside today, which is always super fun. You get to dig your hands into the dirt, piling it up into castles and towers that your imagination can fill with wizards and royalty to have drama amongst themselves. You’re so lost in your little dirt world that you almost don’t notice the shadow that falls over you.
You do notice, though, and glance up to see that same boy. His smile is still tight, but he’s holding something behind his back, the toe of his foot tracing shapes in the dirt.
“Hi!” You greet. “Whatcha got there?”
The boy flushes, but shows you what he’s holding. A small Venipede squirms around in his grip, barely bigger than his hands, so that means-!
“A baby!” You squeal, shocking the boy as you immediately begin to coo at the bug. “Hello! Hello! You’re so cute!”
The boy wobbles on his feet, but eventually sets the Venipede down for you to pet. The bug chitters and whines, leaning into your dirty palms. It makes you squirm with happiness, and you look up to thank the boy for showing you his find, only to see he’s gone.
“Oh.” You say, a little disappointed. But you don’t stay that way for long, as the boy soon runs up, skidding to a stop before you with his hands behind his back once more. “Oh! Yay! You’re back!”
The boy gives a jerking nod, then shoves his hands forward. You tumble back some, surprised to see the small white flower he clutches. It smells sweet, despite being so small.
“For me?” You ask breathily. The boy nods again, so pink you’re worried he’s given himself a fever. But you take the flower from him, smiling as he curls in on himself, fiddling with his own fingers. “Thank you!”
You plant a kiss to his cheek.
“Now we’re married!” You chirp.
The boy faints.
“Oh no!”
You eye the man in the kitchen, chattering away with his brother as they fight over what’s for dinner. Sometimes you miss how cute and shy he used to be, but at the same time, it’s nice to see him grow into someone confident and happy.
Sighing, you close the book on the Venipede entry, safely encasing the tiny white flower pressed between the pages to be looked at another time.

이희승 drabble — silly idol boyfriend heeseung! 𐙚 𓈒 ݁ soft hours fem!reader silly bf hee , idol au requested by @isoobie >< four hundred thirty two cw. hugs kisses clickhere!
Tumblr media
IT WAS ALMOST 3:00 AM when you heard three exact knocks on your front door. You grumbled as this mysterious person rang the doorbell four more times. What were these ding-door-ditching kids doing at three in the morning?
“God, you damn kids-” you muttered as you opened the door while tying your robe. But you were met with a dopey smile from your dear boyfriend. “Heeseung?? What the hell are you doing here?”
He immediately pouted and walked into your apartment. “I was expecting a ‘hi my sweet hee’ but I guess that’s fine..” he said as he immediately hugged you. Chuckling, you patted his back and closed the door. “Sorry, just the self-invite was a bit of a surprise..” you giggled and ruffled his hair.
As heeseung pulled away and smiled at you. I missed you~” he spoke in a sweet tone, making you giggle again and plant a kiss on his plush lips. “Mm~ I missed you too.. c’mon, let’s go to bed..” you held his hand gently and pulled him to your room.
He pursed his lips, kissing your cheek again as he changed into the spare pyjamas you had for him in your room. His arms wrapped around your waist softly from the back as he hummed and kissed your neck, making you chuckle at how cute sleepy-hee was.
“I missed you a lot, y’know..” he muttered with that pout again, head resting against your chest as you laid against the headboard with the sheets over you two and your limbs wrapped around each other like a pretzel. “Mhm.. really?” You smiled back, pressing a kiss to his forehead. “You have no idea..” he mumbled again, looking up to give you a peck.
Suddenly, your sweet moment was interrupted by your loud phone ringing. Was everyone awake at three in the morning?
Grumbling again, you roll your eyes and check your phone. “Hello?” You tiredly asked, with your boyfriend pressing light pecks on your jaw and cheek. “Is heeseung there???” You heard the panic tone of Jake on the line, and so did heeseung as he rolled his eyes. “No one’s home..” he mumbled, pressing his lips to your cheek again.
You giggled and played with his hair again. “Yes, he is.. why?”you immediately heard six sighs of relief. “We’ve been searching for him everywhere for an hour.” Heeseung rolled his eyes again, tiredly pressing more kisses to your cheek. “Quit bugging..” he furrowed his eyebrows and mumbled quietly, falling asleep on your chest.
“I’m- I’m sorry..” You chuckled in surprise to the guys.

Barça v Arsenal
Summary: Based on a request I can’t find, someone wanted a Barça x Arsenal match for the series.
Warnings: Start of a panic attack but doesn't actually happen. Mentions of pregnancy and I guess morning sickness
A/N: Match is fake obviously - trying to find some happiness in Lia’s injury….. Also it’s quite short and not the best but at least it is something.
Tumblr media
You were pacing the length of the locker room, trying to shake the fact that you were about to verse your third family, Arsenal, with the hopes of pummeling them. “Can you stop you’re making me nervous,” someone commented, you were too in your head to know who it was, “no,” you bluntly replied while still pacing, you felt the fear start to rise though as your heart rate increased ever so slightly and it was becoming slightly harder to breath.
“Okay everyone it’s probably time to warm up, Y/N/N and I will meet you all out there” Alexia instructed the team.
“Bebita,” she waited but didn’t get a response, “Y/N/N it’s going to be okay,” “but what if its not, we have to beat them, I have-” you were stopped by Alexia who pulled you in for a hug, “Stop rambling, you will be fine. You are amazing, you’re going to show them all up, Sì?” “Sì”
_____
The game is going well, well better that well. Barça is 6 goals up and there is still 30 mins left in the game, you won a 1v1 with Leah and smirked at her “Guess I am the better Williamson now,” “We’ll see about that”
In the 89th minute you had a perfect opportunity, you kicked the ball, and it went through Leah’s legs before it found the back of the net.
“You just nutmegged me” you just shrugged as you walked away, “oh what don't even celebrate goals now?” “Nah score to many of them,” you smirk back to your sister, before the ref blew the whistle.
At that moment Leah really expected you to go to her first, she was just right there and you hadn’t seen each other in so long, but you didn't you sprinted over to Alexia and sprung into her arms, she caught you with ease, like it was something that you do often, spinning you around before she put you down.
Lia walked over to stand behind your sister who was standing with Beth, Steph, and Viv, she was looking over at you though. Lia wrapped her arms around Leah’s waist, before whispering something to her, “She’ll come over, just give her a moment, and it’s good she isn’t coming over straight away, it means she really does like it there, I mean look at them all.” Leah nodded, she knew her girlfriend was right, but she still couldn’t help the feeling that she had been replaced by Alexia.
“Brace for impact” Leah looked at Steph as she saw you running over, you jumped up on Steph.
“I think you’re getting too big for that now,” “Nah, I’m not even an adult yet.” You wake around to Leah and she wrapped her arms around you. “I missed you,” “I missed you too bug, but we get to spend tonight and tomorrow together,” you nodded, before turning around in her arms, so you could face the others.
“You were amazing today,” Steph said “Thanks, I miss you all.” “We miss you too, you know-” “Shit kid you’re insane, you literally are amazing” Katie said as she ran over to join you all.
“I’m just going to go check on Lia, you keep talking, I’ll come get you when it’s time to leave” Your sister told you quietly, you nodded before you looked over to see Lia, she was heading down the tunnel.
_____
“Y/N, ready to go?” Leah eyes you up and down, “Um, I’ll have a shower at home,” You had been so busy talking to everyone you hadn’t had time to have a shower and change.
“Okay, Lia is already in the car, so just meet us there, because I’m assuming you have to go return someone” she gestured to Harper who you had held in your arms, you nodded before going your separate ways, you followed Mini and Kyra to their car and put Harper in her carseat, before walking over to to where Leah and Lia were sitting in the car. As you opened the door you noticed Lia looked a little pale and almost as if she had been crying. She held onto her water bottle tightly. You were slightly confused, as she seemed fine earlier, but maybe it was due to whatever injury she had.
“You know bug, you would be a fantastic aunt,” Leah let slip as she started the car.
“Huh,” you saw Lia give your sister a mixed look, you weren't really sure what it was communicating, but you figured out pretty quickly what was going on “Wait, no, really?” your voice got embarrassingly higher with each word.
“Yes Bug really, but you can’t tell anyone, we hadn’t planned to tell you today but I mean you probably would’ve figured it out, considering I’m not actually injured, plus the sickness.” Lia responded to you, it now made sense why she looked like she did when you got in the car, “But Bug, you have to promise not to tell anyone. No one else knows, we only got the results back from the clinic yesterday,” your sister added.
“I promise I won’t, but I’m so excited for you both, you’re going to be great Mums. Also I’m sorry for making you wait for me, I just-” “it’s okay, don’t worry, I’m just glad you got to see everyone and that we get to spend time together”
“Can we name the baby Y/N?”

I got the Passion For Fashion brainworms, and since you're guilty for it you WILL get my headcannons.
Since Clockwork made them know spanish as if it was their first language, they only talk in spanish with eachother, more often than not completely forgetting that they are talking in SPANISH.
Danny and Dan like bickering and banter but since they were basically eachother once upon a time they know eachother's limits perfectly. That causes them to say a lot of agressive and downright nasty stuff to eachother so it always sounds like they hate eachother and are constantly fighting.
Clockwork gave them the "essentials" for making clothes, so Dan will absolutely just spam Danny's phonenwith pictures and descriptions of a sewing gadget or tool and be like "Danny i need this. Please. I know you keep making stuff don't lie to me. I know you can do it so please just make it. Danny we are too poor to buy this. Danny PLEASE I need it" until Danny accepts making the thing in true Fenton fashion.
Danny and Dan making up names for themselves because no sane parent names both of their twins "Daniel"
"I swear to the Ancients I will NOT hesitate to go Cain Instinct on your ass-"
Making fun of Vlad together. Just. Making fun of him in general.
The pmoment Bruce decides to show some interest in the twins Danny go home running and be like "Dan. Dan I fuckked up. Dan there's another billionaire after us. Dan how do I always fuck this up." and since they're both dumbasses they panic together and the batkids (who are most likely listening in with a bug or smth) are all just laughing at Bruce's sour face.
Dan headcannons cuz i love him:
I think that even if they're identical twins, Dan has longer hair with a dark gray streak (cuz of vlad ofc)
even if he is a fashion maker he probably goes everywhere wearing sweatpants and a hoodie.
Dan forcefully makes Danny do skincare to make his appearance look good but will never even drink a glass of water for his own health.
I love them and spent the entire day without internet so now I'm devoting myself thanks for the content <3<3
Tumblr media
I love all of these!! Its beautiful!
Danny and Dan not realizing they slipped into Spanish is such a mood tbh. Sometimes, my coworkers and I do that, and my non Spanish speaking coworker just stares at us until we snap.
Lowkey they dislike each other, but they also love each other, and no one can tell with the insults they threw. Danny and Dan live and breath the "Only I can be mean to my sibling!"
Danny would make Dan anything he asked for if it meant keeping his Obsession healthy. On the one hand, it gives him something to do and, on the other hand, keeps Dan from jumping off the deep end again. He does get annoyed with Dan spamming him at three in the moring for "A machine that could double bedazzled and polish!"
Both kept their names as Danny and Dan, so neither is Daniel. Clockwork did that when he made their files. He knew if he tried to change their names, both would refuse to answer.
They turned Vlad into a verb. Danny trips over air? "You went and Vlad-ed everything bro" Dan refuses to shower cause he has some embroidery to do? "Ugh you Vlad-ed all of my scent receivers" sometimes when the fight is really big Danny will yell "YOUR JUST LIKE YOUR FATHER VLAD!" and Dan will gasp dramatically before bursting into tears. ( Cause he took Vlad ghost that makes him half vlad and Dan has to live with that)
Bruce would never understand why the twins are more freaked out by Brucie Wayne then Batman. His kids think it's hilarious.
Dan and Danny are identical down to the hairstyle in my au, but That will change with time. Dan will grow out his hair to put it in a man bun, while Danny will cut it short. And yes, Dan wears nothing by sweats or PJs. He doesn't care about the clothes after they are finished. He just likes making them.
Dan was a pure ghost for almost ten years before Clockwork messed with his body and threw it back into its teens. He is not used to doing most basic human needs like showering, eating, sleeping, and, of course, drinking water. Danny has to remind him his headache is due to lake of all the things mentioned. That will not stop him from designing a strict beauty regime for Danny, including hourly water intake.
Last little detail, both are terrible at social interactions. Dan beacuse he thinks of himself as a ghost and doesn't like humans so he avoids them if he can and Danny cause he sees everyone as unimportant since he's planning on going home. Neither of them know anything about Batman besides what clockwork told them. As of part 3 they didn't even know he was a vigilante. So this lake of information means they don't know anyhring about the rest of Gotham and that will play a big part in how they react to villains.
Also yes, Dan was being genuinely interested when he flirted with Killer Croc, but that's cause he thought he was a EverBurning. A group of Lizard men in the ghost zone is similar to the FarFrozen society only they live in volcano surrounded by lava.

Luke Castellan
Tumblr media
A/N: hcs cause I’m feeling feral
• Luke is a nail biter. He constantly picks and chews - drawing blood in the process.
• Luke hates the color green - it brings back terrible memories and makes him want to vomit.
• Luke loves giving forehead kisses - ones where he stays with his lips on your forehead for a long time conveying his love that way
• Luke is in fact the father of CHB. He tucks kids to bed, reads stories, kisses injuries, helps with homework. He thinks since he didn’t have a father he never wants another kid to feel that way
• Luke hates small spaces - it makes him claustrophobic. It reminds him of when he used to hide from his mother in the closet. Trapped. Sometimes at night he wakes you to come for walks outside - because the walls of the Hermes cabin were closing in
• Luke is a morning person - he has to be with all the kids in the Hermes cabin
• Luke likes the Rocky movies. He stole them from a thrift store on VHS. The boys at camp love it and even quote it (mostly Charlie and Luke)
• speaking of stealing - no one talks about how good he is at it. Sometimes he doesn’t even know he took anything until a few hours later when he looks into his pocket.
• Luke has no filter sometimes - especially around you - he blames the ADHD
• Luke is very good at sneaking around - very quiet on his feet
•Luke bounces his leg when he’s nervous
• Luke loves kids - he loves helping the younger campers. You don’t know if it is because he had a poor childhood - but secretly he considers most of the campers his children in a way
• Luke has crooked teeth - when he smiles one is chipped in the upper corner. When he laughs he throws his head back gripping at his chest - imperfectly perfect
• Luke likes domestic living it makes him feel safe and in control
• Luke only talks about his mom at night after episodes of grueling nightmares - never during the day - never in causal conversation - you never pry
• Luke has bug bites all over his legs - he always picks at them leaving scabs
• Luke makes decisions sometimes without thinking - he never really tries to think ahead
• Luke loves when you run your fingers through his hair - it helps him sleep
• Luke is a light sleeper - always prepared to wake when another Hermes camper has a nightmare
• Luke has panic attacks that frequently end up with him in your bed - vice versa
• When Luke hugs you it’s like he clings on - almost like him might never see you again
• Luke always dirty - whether it be dirt on his shirt - grass stains on his pants - leaves in his hair?
Okay I’m done for tonight

Hi! I've spent hours reading your Steddie stuff when I honestly should have been sleeping because work and adulting. Gotta be some of my favorite writing! You have requests/prompts open? I have 2! If you like them :) 1. The Soulmate idea of people having a moving animal tattoo representing their Soulmate. Steve has hyperactive bat who loves to drape itself around his neck quite possessively. Eddie with a retriever pup or something that likes to curl up over his heart. 2. Always a sweetheart Steve? No King Steve era thing. He bugs Eddie to learn about D&D to understand his kids better qnd our poor metal gremlin melts :) I'm Soft Boi, so sorry for no angst.
I'm posting the 1st one here, but on the second one, I am gonna just give a rec instead. Last Man Standing by @griefabyss69 (GriefAbyss on AO3) is kind of this request but taking it to filth level 😈 But anyways, this idea is so fucking cool my dudes. I love a good soulmate AU, and when it's something super unique like this, I lose my shit. I definitely think someone could make a slow burn with this idea and if anyone does, please let me know! - Mickala ❤️
---------------------------------------------------------
He used to hate it.
A bat was such a menacing and disgusting creature.
Anyone who saw it would give him a look that was equal parts apologetic and concerned.
But when Steve started getting left alone at home, when he only had surface level friends, when he cried himself to sleep because the silence wasn’t enough to drown out the negative thoughts, the bat wrapped itself around his neck, and he didn’t feel so alone.
He’d started sleeping with his hand on his shoulder just to feel closer to his soulmate.
Hoped that whoever it was wouldn’t be disappointed that he was theirs.
————-
Eddie convinced himself for his entire childhood that the golden retriever tattoo that ran up and down his arms every day was some sympathy soulmate tattoo.
There was no way his soulmate was someone this hyper.
And then Wayne explained there was usually a story behind the tattoo, something more than just the personality or energy of a person.
At night, the retriever would pace across his chest, eventually settling right over his heart.
He wondered what his tattoo representation was.
He hoped it was a bat.
————-
“Dude, it’s not a big deal. Just show us!” Tommy yelled to Steve from the pool.
Steve had managed to hide it from his friends for so long.
He wasn’t ashamed necessarily, but he definitely didn’t need Tommy and Carol or any of the rest of the basketball team to see it.
The tattoo often stayed hidden pretty well during the day, usually hid on his thigh or stomach. He got away with always wearing shirts for practice and skipped post-practice showers with excuses that he had a study group to get to.
But his pool was a problem, especially now that he was at an age where everyone wanted to come over to swim when his parents weren’t around, which was often.
He tried to make excuses, said he was just worried about the sun, worried about a creepy neighbor watching.
It only worked a couple of times.
Now it was night, so no sun.
The neighbor was on vacation.
And everyone expected him to strip down and get into the pool.
So he did.
Everyone stared in silence as the bat flew from his stomach to his back and settled on his shoulder.
It seemed like it wanted to be seen, but still wasn’t sure how it wanted to be perceived.
Steve could relate.
No one commented on it, probably too afraid that one wrong word would get them kicked out of the pool permanently.
When he went to bed that night, the bat took its place around his neck, his hand rested in its place against his shoulder, and he sighed.
“I hope you’re being seen,” he whispered into his empty room.
——————-
The golden retriever was completely still for more than eight hours the same night Starcourt exploded.
Eddie tried not to panic for the first few hours, knew it could be any number of reasons the tattoo wasn’t moving.
But after hour six, he called Wayne at work, worry carrying over the line as fireworks boomed in the background.
“It’s not moving. It- you said when it stopped it meant- they can’t be, though.”
“Eds, take a few slow breaths, son. C’mon now, you’d have known if he-”
“But what if mine’s broken? What if the connection isn’t right?” Eddie tried taking breaths, but it wasn’t working.
The more he thought about it, the more likely it was that his soulmate was gone.
By the time Wayne made it home from work, the retriever had moved from his forearm to its usual place over his heart, and Eddie was fast asleep on the couch, his hand resting on top of it.
—--------------------
Being dragged into more freaky Upside Down shit was not on Steve’s to-do list. Then again, it never really was.
He wouldn’t have even bothered coming with Dustin and Max if not for the fact that Dustin was terrified something had happened to his new best friend Eddie.
He tried to hide his terrible mood, but knew he was failing.
He woke up this morning to his bat already on his leg, seemingly asleep, though it was normally still around his neck or on his shoulder when he woke up.
It hadn’t moved all morning, and he was a little worried about what that might mean.
He was also getting more worried by the day that he’d never meet his soulmate.
He knew it was dramatic, but most people he went to school with had met theirs by now, their tattoos now permanently placed in matching spots on their bodies.
“Dustin, this is so stupid,” he reiterated for the hundredth time as they walked up to the boathouse door.
He kept thinking it to himself as they poked around looking for Eddie, as he was being held against the wall with a broken bottle to his neck by Eddie, as he felt a flutter in his stomach at the way Eddie was watching him as they told him about the Upside Down.
He didn’t take the time over the next couple of days to pay much attention to his tattoo, didn’t really consider the fact that what little time he slept, he was so out of it he didn’t even notice whether the bat was on his neck or not.
Didn’t think about it until a moment in the RV alone with Eddie, when something in his brain told him to check on the bat.
“Sorry, just. Can you wait one second?” Steve interrupted Eddie’s thought as kindly as he could.
“Uh, yeah?” Eddie responded, confused.
He slipped to the back, not bothering to close the curtain that separated it from the rest of the RV.
He lifted his shirt in hopes of seeing it, but it wasn’t there.
He groaned and unbuttoned his jeans, rushing to just check and see if the bat had moved at all.
He shoved his jeans down and frowned.
It was in the same place still.
On his inner thigh on his right leg.
“Fuck,” he muttered under his breath, or what he thought was under his breath.
“Everything okay?” Eddie’s voice was much closer than he expected, making him jump and rush to pull his pants back up. “Shit, was that your tattoo?”
“Yeah. It hasn’t moved in a while.”
“Neither has mine.” Eddie moved in closer. “Actually, mine’s on my thigh too. Kinda makes it hard to check.”
“Which thigh?” Steve couldn’t help asking.
“Right.”
“What is it?”
“Golden retriever. Can’t really imagine who it would be,” he admitted.
Steve’s first and only pet had been a puppy. A golden retriever named Daisy.
She was his entire world for almost a year until she chewed on one of his dad’s expensive watches and ended up being given to a man who worked with him.
He cried for days after that, didn’t talk to his dad for weeks, not that that was difficult to do since he was gone more often than not.
He vowed that he would get another one the moment he was an adult.
That didn’t quite work out.
But his nannies all used to call him a retriever, his energy contagious in the best way, his playful demeanor a relief. As he grew up, it got dulled by his parents, expectations, society, but he knew inside, all of that was still there.
“What’s yours?” Eddie asked, shaking him out of his thoughts.
“A bat.”
Eddie tilted his head and looked at him, eyes squinting to take him in.
“A bat?”
“Yeah. He’s a playful guy, but kinda shy it seems like,” Steve’s smile was fond until it was sad. “At least until he stopped moving.”
“When did he stop moving?” Eddie ignored the fact that it was a he for now.
“I guess I noticed it the day we found you in the boathouse.”
They both stared at each other for a moment, possibly coming to similar conclusions.
“What about yours?” Steve asked quietly, though something told Eddie he already knew the answer.
“The day you found me in the boathouse.”
“I-”
“How-”
“Dingus, we gotta go!” Robin was suddenly yelling as the RV door slammed open.
They could figure this out later.
They would have to.
—-----------------------
As Steve sat by Eddie’s bedside in the hospital, he thought about how often the bat tattoo had been the only comfort he had, the only thing that kept him from being completely alone.
He thought about how Eddie had always done his best to include the people who didn’t belong anywhere else, how he’d put on a show to protect himself, but hated being seen.
Wayne watched him from the other side of the bed, silently judging him, probably trying to figure out how to kick him out.
But he couldn’t.
He felt the pull now.
Now that he’d been around Eddie, somewhat gotten to know him, how he was fearless when it came to the gremlins, was willing to give up his own life if it meant getting Dustin to safety, he could feel the tug on his heart.
It was inconvenient since they didn’t know when or really even if Eddie would wake up.
So he waited.
He waited for Wayne to kick him out. He waited for doctors and nurses to have answers. He waited for Eddie to wake up.
He waited to know if he’d be able to have his soulmate or not.
—-------------------
Eddie’s first word when he woke up was Steve’s name.
Steve let out an uncontrollable sob, curling down so his head rested in the sheets of the bed.
Wayne’s hand was on his back, his voice trying to speak to him and Eddie at the same time.
They’d gotten closer over the last few days, Wayne’s calm presence enough to keep Steve from completely losing his mind with worry.
But the pain meds in the IV drip seemed to catch back up to Eddie within minutes and he was asleep again.
“He woke up though. Your boy woke up,” Wayne said to him, holding his hand.
“Yeah. He did.”
—-------------------
When Eddie left the hospital, Steve insisted on pushing his wheelchair to Wayne’s truck himself.
The nurse agreed with little argument; The hospital was incredibly understaffed and overrun with patients from the “earthquake” and she had a million better things to do.
The walk down was mostly quiet, but not awkward.
“I think some of my tattoo is missing,” Eddie finally said, barely more than a whisper.
“From the bats?” Steve asked.
“Yeah. I’m sorry.”
“Not your fault. Doesn’t change anything.”
“No?” he asked, voice full of hope.
“Not a thing for me.”
—------------------------
They dated.
It was unconventional in every way.
Steve had never pictured himself with a man, but now he couldn’t picture himself with anyone but Eddie.
Eddie had to explain that they couldn’t just go out and hold hands like any of Steve’s other dates, they had to be careful.
It wasn’t always easy; Steve got frustrated and Eddie got insecure.
But they always ended their nights with soft kisses, with whispered words of comfort and promises.
They fell in love like that, the tattoos only the beginning of something that no one could have expected.

Summary: You and Rafe are in for the shock of a lifetime, and tensions run high when Rafe discovers the two of you have more in common than he thought.
Word Count:4.4k
Tumblr media
Nerves claw at your throat as you sit in the sterile chair, the stench of rubbing alcohol and bleach singeing your nose hairs. Just as promised, Rafe is right beside you, his hand clammy in yours as you both prepare to see your baby for the first time.
The first available appointment was almost two weeks out, and sitting on this secret has not been an easy feat. Everybody has been fawning over you since they found out; Jj will barely let you go to the bathroom alone.
Things have seemed to cool off, and despite everyone's initial chagrin, Rafe has practically been living at the chateau. Much to everybody's astonishment, he's been extremely attentive.
He holds your hair back as morning sickness tears through your body, which had been laughable to Sarah. She remembers one time when they were kids that she had gotten a stomach bug, and Rafe had been equally miserable seeing as every time she threw up, it triggered him as well.
She was expecting Rafe to at least gag, but for some unknown reason, he didn't even flinch. He just rubbed your back and brought you water before carrying you back to bed.
Your thoughts are interrupted when the door opens, and a kind-looking older woman walks in.
"Good afternoon, Ms. Maybank. I'm Dr. Wilson. How are you feeling today?"
Her voice is soothing, a practiced softness that reminds you of a lullaby. It washes over you in relaxing waves, and you feel your muscles unclench the slightest bit.
"Nervous."
You give her a shy smile and she returns the gesture while making her way over.
"I assume this is your first?"
You give a short nod and her smile widens.
"You're the father, correct?"
Her attention is on Rafe now, and his eyes widen slightly when he realizes she's talking to him.
"Uh, yes ma'am. Rafe."
She turns to the monitor and you look at him with raised eyebrows.
Ma'am?
You mouth it silently and he shrugs his shoulders with a bewildered look while mouthing back I don't fucking know! You shake your head and stifle a laugh, your attention being drawn back to the doctor when she speaks.
"Okay, if you can lift your shirt we'll take a look. The gel may be a little cool, but it'll only last a second."
You comply silently, tensing up a bit when the gel hits your skin that's still sizzling from the scorching sun. Rafe's hand squeezes yours and you tighten your grip when the wand touches your exposed skin.
It feels like your heart is going to beat out of your chest when the screen pops up, and the doctor takes a second to find what she's looking for. Before you know it, there's a white blob on the screen and your breath is sucked out from your lungs.
Tears sting your waterline as you look at yours and Rafe's baby, and you catch the end of a sniffle from where he's sitting.
"Looks like you're about 11 weeks, so almost into your second trimester."
You stay silent, completely enamored with the little human that's bobbing around. They're tiny still but resemble a person more than you thought they would with little arms and legs flailing about.
The doctor freezes for a moment before regaining her composure, but you still noticed. Your head whips to look at her, and you frown when you see she looks perplexed.
You're just about to ask if everything is okay when she beats you to it.
"Do twins run in your family?"
If there were six words in the English language that could make your blood turn to ice, it would be that sentence. You look at the ground, half expecting to see your stomach sitting there.
"Um, I'm a twin and so was my mom. Why?"
Rafe's grip has loosened significantly, and if you weren't so close to hyperventilating you would have paid more attention to it.
"Well, it looks like your genes run strong. Congratulations!"
The world stops spinning as blood rushes in your ears, and you can feel the color drain from your face. You're not sure what about your reaction makes her think this is something to celebrate, but you can't find the strength to ask.
You're broken out of your stupor when Rafe's hand slips from yours and you hear a thump. You turn to face him with wide eyes, only to find your support system passed out cold.
"Oh for the love of God."
It comes out as a mutter, and you momentarily forget the cause of his reaction as you slip into girlfriend mode. You move to stand, but the doctor's hand stops you at the last second.
"You're not looking too hot yourself, honey. Why don't you stay sitting? I've already paged a couple nurses, this happens more often than you might think."
You follow her instructions and watch as two nurses come in with Gatorade and an ice pack. They maneuver Rafe back into his chair, and after a couple of minutes, he comes around.
His eyes blink open slowly, and he scowls when he sees the two women standing over him.
"What's going on? Is everything okay?"
You bite the inside of your cheek to stop from laughing and reach for his hand again.
"You fainted, Rafe."
Another laughs bubbles up from your chest as his face and ears flush crimson, his expression nothing short of mortified.
"Oh."
The nurses make the two of you stay for a bit, forcing both of you to drink the Gatorade and checking your vitals until they're sure you're both okay to leave. You walk to his truck with the sonogram safely tucked into your bag, your hands laced together as you cross the parking lot.
He opens the door and helps you up before rounding the front and climbing into the driver's seat. It's silent for a moment, both of you trying to process the new information before Rafe speaks up.
"They're all gonna shit bricks when they find out."
There's a beat, and the two of you burst into hysterics. You wipe the tears off your cheeks and take a deep breath to calm down before rolling your head to the side to look at him.
"About that, I was thinking we don't tell them."
You almost lose it again as he gives you the most alarmed look you've ever seen before continuing.
"I mean, not yet. Obviously, we have to tell them. I was just thinking we could keep it between us for a bit."
You can see him processing the idea before nodding slowly.
"Okay, yeah sure. We're not gonna be able to hide it for long though. You're gonna be huge."
Your mouth gapes open at his statement and you see the exact moment he wishes he could suck the words back into his mouth.
"No, I don't mean- I just- shut up."
He sighs dramatically and you chuckle as he starts driving, his right hand seated comfortably on your thigh.
"Are we still on for lunch with your dad and Rose?"
It's a question you're hoping to change the answer to, but you know you'll have no such luck. The air in the truck thickens and you feel Rafe's grip tighten on your leg.
"Yeah. We're headed straight there."
You purse your lips and nod, trying to fight back the tears threatening to fall. Stupid pregnancy and its stupid fucking hormones.
"Does he know I'm coming?"
Rafe audibly swallows, and you can tell his answer makes him physically ill.
"No."
You take a deep breath, willing your pulse to slow and Rafe gives you a sympathetic look.
"I know, baby. I'm sorry."
You shake your head, glossing over the pet name, and kiss his cheek.
"It's okay, I get it."
The rest of the ride is dangerously quiet, save the quiet hum of the radio and salty air blowing in through the windows. You watch as the houses turn from worn down to mansions, and do your best to regulate your breathing as you creep further and further into Figure eight.
Closer and closer to Tannyhill.
A single tear escapes as he turns into the long driveway, and his heart drops when he parks and looks over at your terrified face.
"Hey, it's gonna be okay. I'm right here."
His voice is light like summer rain as his hand comes up to wipe your cheek. He climbs out and comes over to open your door, almost having to carry you when your knees wobble. He gives you a second to find your footing and wraps his arm around your waist protectively as he leads you to the door.
He walks straight in and hesitates for a second before leading you into the dining room. Ward and Rose are already seated, their gazes turned downward as they talk.
"Rafe, son, right on ti-"
The words die on Ward's tongue as he looks up and meets your gaze, a mixture of confusion and anger swirling in his eyes that you notice resemble Rafe's. You briefly wonder if your kids will inherit the same striking blue irises before shaking the thought out of your head.
His eyes dart to his son's arm around you before landing on Rafe, fury clear on his face. If he's already mad, you can't imagine how it's gonna go when he finds out why you're really here.
You consider just making a run for it; maybe fleeing the country and changing your name. You don't get the opportunity as Rafe pulls out a chair, and you hesitantly take a seat. Ward remains eerily still, and you can't help the tremors that violently wrack your body.
You're suddenly reminded of your own father; the way he would stare you down as an intimidation tactic before lunging. It causes fear to crawl up your spine and you try your damdest to stave off the panic attack you can feel rearing its ugly head.
Rafe doesn't know about your home life growing up, and you're not very keen on explaining it right now. He seems oddly at ease, leaning back in his chair with his legs spread as if it's any average day.
You think maybe for him it is; you've heard the whispers about how Ward is behind closed doors.
"Why is she here?"
The disgust dripping from Ward's voice causes you to shrink back, memories of Luke ruthlessly flashing in your mind at the familiar tone.
The Rafe sitting beside you is a completely different man than the one that you've seen every day for two weeks, and it makes your head spin. His normally ocean blue eyes are dark and stormy, the open demeanor he always has with you closed off and guarded with barbed wire.
To the untrained eye, he looks calm and collected; but you've spent enough time with him to know he's anything but.
"For lunch."
His tone has a cruel bite to it, and your eyes widen slightly. What the hell is he doing? This is going to be bad enough without him trying to bait his father.
Ward scoffs humorlessly before leaning forward, and you recognize the look before the fangs come out.
"I know that you didn't bring a Maybank into my house with the intention of telling me you're dating her."
Rafe appears unphased to his father, but you don't miss the way his jaw clenches at the implication that you're not worthy of being here. Being with him.
"So what if I did?"
It has a mocking inflection, and you want nothing more than for the ground to open you up and swallow you whole.
"Rafe."
You recognize the dangerous warning tone, and close your eyes trying to imagine yourself anywhere but here.
"Don't worry, Dad. That's not the news. Not all of it at least."
Your eyes shoot open again at the statement, trying to figure out if your ears are playing tricks on you. Did Rafe just admit in a roundabout way that you're dating? That's news to you.
Ward stays silent, and you can't help but notice the way his hands are clenched tight enough to turn his knuckles white.
You grab Rafe's hand with a death grip, a silent plea not to continue. You're not ready to do this, and the timing is wrong. Arguably lethal.
"What the fuck are you talking about?"
Based on the venom dripping from his words, you have a feeling he's already started to catch on and you know the ship has already sailed. You wonder if pretending to pass out would stop it, but at this point, you're fairly certain they'd fist-fight over your limp body.
"Surprise, she's pregnant."
Turns out you might not have to pretend to faint because the way your breathing has shortened and darkness is rimming your sight tells you you're about to lose consciousness for real.
You send up a thank you to whoever stopped Rafe from tacking 'with twins' onto the end of his sentence and brace yourself to hit the floor.
You vaguely register the sound of a chair scraping against the hardwood floor, when suddenly Rafe is directly in front of you with your face in his hands. It seems he finally noticed you swaying in your seat and snapped out of his rage-fueled daze.
"Hey, hey. Y/N, baby, breathe for me. Can you do that?"
His words are muffled as your hearing starts to go, and he places your hand on his chest to ground you. You try to focus on the steady thumping of his heart and the slow rhythmic breaths he's taking, attempting to pull yourself back from the edge.
Your body seems to take over for you, matching your breathing to his as you slowly but surely come to your senses. The first thing you hear is Ward screaming profanities and insults, and your eyes shift to look at him behind Rafe.
He shakes his head and squeezes your cheeks, forcing you to meet his gaze.
"Hey, focus on me okay? I'm gonna get you out of here."
Before you can register what's happening, you're scooped into Rafe's arms as he carries you away from the sound of breaking glass and flipping tables.
You zone out Ward's yelling, your arms wrapped tightly around Rafe's neck as he whispers sweet nothings into your ear.
Time seems to move at warped speed as he practically runs to his truck, and he buckles you in before clambering to his side and speeding off.
"Why would you do that? I know that's why we went there, but that could not have gone worse."
The quiver in your voice surprises you, and you try to pinpoint when you started crying.
He runs his hand over his head as he drives to the chateau, the familiar feeling of regret consuming him.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I can't think clearly around him, and it brings out the worst in me."
He sounds on the verge of tears, and for the life of you, you can't bring yourself to stay mad. You understand how that feels, far more intimately than he realizes.
"I forgive you."
It comes out as a whisper and Rafe breathes a sigh of relief as he parks in front of the chateau.
"What was that about back there? I've seen you panic before, but never to the point of completely disassociating and almost passing out."
His voice is dripping with concern, and it causes a fresh round of tears to start.
"It's nothing, don't worry about it."
Rafe tilts his head to the side and blinks slowly, honestly shocked that you would try to play it off.
"Don't do that. Don't pretend like that was normal. I know trauma when I see it."
Your eyes squeeze shut as you lean your head back, and you know you're gonna have to tell him. You're just deciding how much to divulge.
"Y/N. You're the mother of my children and my girl. You just saw how my dad is, so honestly there's nothing you can say that will scare me off."
His heart breaks in its cage as you look over, and in that moment all he sees is a scared little girl.
"I'm your girl?"
He gives you a pointed look and pokes your nose to try and lighten the mood.
"Don't change the subject."
You take a deep breath and prepare to tell him everything.
"It's a long story."
He reaches out to brush a stray hair behind your ear, and the tenderness in his eyes is almost enough to send you into a full breakdown.
"I have time."
You lean into his touch and whimper, truly not wanting to tell him your deepest darkest secret. It's locked away in a box, and if it was up to you, it'd stay there forever.
"My uh- my dad."
It's all you can muster for a moment and you can see the gears turning in Rafe's head. He stays silent, rubbing his thumb along your cheek as an encouragement to continue.
"The shorter version is he became really abusive after my mom left. Always drinking and gambling. He made us give him all our money for drugs and debts. JJ got the worst of it, but when he was too far gone he would say I reminded him of her and take it out on me."
You wait with bated breath as he processes, and you can see his expression darken as your words settle in.
"It's fine, though! I'm okay, now. It's just that Ward had the same look and tone, and it sent me into a spiral."
You try desperately to backpedal, already wishing you could take it back. You've never seen Rafe look so pained as he pulls you over the center console into his lap, his hand pressing your face into the crook of his neck.
"Baby, that's not fine. Nothing about that is fine. I'm so sorry that happened to you, and you're safe now, but you're not okay."
You feel your resolve crumble at his last statement, and against your will, you shatter. The carefully constructed wall you built comes crashing down, and an entire lifetime of pain and repressed feelings come tumbling out.
Rafe knows as soon as you gasp in a breath that it's coming, and his arms tighten to pull you impossibly closer as you fall apart. You cling to him like your life depends on it, and Rafe does his best to keep it in check for you.
He can't stop the tears that flow freely upon seeing you so fragile and broken, and he's hit with the realization that maybe kooks and pogues aren't all that different.
At least he had a stable roof over his head, and food on the table. Ward had his moments, but he never blatantly beat him. He had hobbies and shiny things to distract him, but what did you have?
He thinks he understands now why the bond between pogues is so strong; you're truly all each other has. He hates the image of you so small and defenseless, and if he knows you, then he knows you probably tried to protect JJ with everything you had.
The image makes him sick; two kids clinging to each other and just trying to make it out alive. You take a deep breath and try to speak despite your burning throat.
"It wasn't that bad when we were kids. But once we were old enough to take it, it just never seemed to stop. How can you do that to your children?"
The words are strained as you continue sobbing and Rafe swears his heart is in a blender. He can't imagine what you must be feeling; especially now that you're about to have twins of your own.
"Hey, I'm right here. You know we're gonna be better parents than them right? These kids are gonna have so many people to love and spoil them, they won't even know what to do. They'll never feel how we did."
His quiet reassurances seem to do the trick as your breathing starts to calm down, and he does his best to convince himself of his own words.
He sees so much of his father in himself; would he even know if he's walking the same path before it's too late?
As if you read his mind, you sit back and stare into his eyes.
"You know you're not your father, right?"
His heart flutters when you reach up and wipe his tears, so loving and attentive despite your own crisis.
"How do you know?"
It's a sobering and painfully vulnerable question, and he's taken aback at the raw honesty and love in your eyes. Has that always been there?
"Because, Rafe, the fact you're even thinking about it means you're already a good dad. Shitty parents don't worry about how they're fucking up their kids. You're gonna take everything that was given to you and use it to be better. I know it."
He doesn't know how you can see so much good in him when the world has only ever seen evil. He can't understand how despite your upbringing, you still managed to stay so kind and never let it change your heart.
He just stares for a moment, really taking in just how breathtaking you are. Not just your appearance, but who you are. If it was anyone else, he would be scared shitless and would probably run in the other direction.
He would throw money at the problem, and he certainly wouldn't be cramped into the cab of his truck baring his soul. But this is you, and he knows this is where he's meant to be. He would never want to do this with anyone else.
In a span of two weeks, his life has been turned upside down; and yet he's the most content he's ever been. It's then that he's struck like a lightning bolt, and he crashes his lips against yours.
"Be my girlfriend."
He murmurs the words in between kisses, and you freeze in place. He said it with such conviction that you don't even think to ask if he's serious.
"What?"
You think you must be hallucinating now, but that suspicion is erased when he repeats himself.
"Be my girlfriend. I don't know about you, but I don't see myself moving on from you. So please, don't make me try."
You pull back and look at him like a deer caught in headlights, unsure how to respond. No way in hell is this your life.
"Rafe.."
He shakes his head frantically and brings his hand up to cup your jaw.
"I know it's sudden. Well, not really because we've been sleeping together for six months but you know what I mean. I know a lot has happened today, and if you need time then I'll wait. But think about the four of us together, a happy family creating the life we never had."
You cut him off with a bruising kiss and nod slowly.
"Yes, Rafe. Yes, I want that with you."
You laugh when he does a mini fist pump, and slap his arm playfully. Your eye catches movement and you turn to look toward the house with a frown.
Your face contorts into amusement when you see your friends tripping over each other as they try to duck behind a tree and pretend like they weren't snooping.
"We have an audience."
You can't help the laugh you let out, and you don't bother climbing back over the passenger seat. You swing the driver-side door open and tumble out, nearly face-planting, before Rafe catches your waist.
You smile up at him sheepishly, and he tsks.
"You have to be more careful, baby. You're carrying precious cargo."
You amble over to the group with a fake scolding glare, and they shrink back under your gaze.
"So?"
Sarah is the first to speak, and you almost cackle at the gleam in her eyes as she bounces on the balls of her feet.
"We're together."
You and Rafe say it at the same time and throw your head back with laughter as cheers erupt.
JJ and John B yell out at the same time, and it almost causes you to double over.
"I knew it!"
"Called it!"
John B turns to Kie with his hand out and she groans loudly.
"You owe me twenty bucks."
Your mouth drops open as you lean back into Rafe's chest with mock offense.
"You had a bet?!"
John B scoffs as he pockets the money and turns to face you.
"Oh, like you wouldn't."
You all make your way into the house and plop on the couches, Rafe's arm snugly wrapped around your shoulder as you curl into him.
"How's the little nugget?"
JJ knocks his knee into yours and you face him with a beaming smile.
"Good. Everything is perfectly normal and I'm 11 weeks."
His hand comes out to stroke your barely bulging stomach and he gives it a fist bump.
"That's what I like to hear. When do you find out what you're having? I need to know whether to buy a pink or blue dirt bike."
You roll your eyes at his antics and place your hand on your belly.
"At the next appointment in a month."
Sarah squeals and you already know you're in for a painful amount of shopping.
"If it's a boy you're naming him JJ, right?"
Rafe hums behind you, a teasing smile breaking out across his face.
"Actually, we were thinking RJ for Rafe Junior."
You whip around to face him with horror and scrunch up your face.
"Absolutely not."
He tickles your sides and you shriek, accidentally falling into JJ as you try to flee his attack.
"I'm just kidding, princess. We haven't discussed names yet."
John B reaches over and ruffles your hair as you groan.
"Just don't name them something stupid. The last thing I need is my niece or nephew being bullied."
JJ snorts and leans back, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
"If they're gonna get bullied, it's gonna be for having a loser as a mom."
You gasp dramatically and swing a pillow into his face as he laughs loudly, and everyone joins. You settle back into Rafe when he presses a sweet kiss to your temple and lace your fingers with his.
Despite the circumstances, you wouldn't change a thing. This is exactly where you want to be, wrapped up in Rafe arms and laughing with your found family.

the night time bugs of pandora buzzed while the birds chirped their good nights. all walks of life that was still to be discovered by you and your men and scientists. the night life was gorgeous, very different than what you were used to. you were used to a cold room, fake food because earth was a disaster so humans had to come up with a substitute, unfriendly faces, no empathy. the na’vi were people that loved one another, took care of each other and their planet they called home. you wished humans would have done the same to your home. you were fascinated with biology and the different plants on the planet. it was incredible, better than what you dreamed of.
—————————————————-—————————————————-——
as you said your goodnights to others in the tribe they guided you to your hammock. sure it was…odd but it was their customs and you wanted to gain the na’vi’s trust. you could hear footsteps from animals outside. it was comforting in a way.
“y/n…what, what is life for you? what make you happy?” one of the young na’vi girl’s asked you. she was learning english from you and you were proud of her.
you clapped your hands, “very good. very good. now, you tell me how to say that in your language.” you smiled big. what you didn’t know was jake was standing by. he fell in love with how you interacted with the people, especially the kids. it pulled his heart strings. it was beautiful.
“well, what makes me happy?” you thought about the question. as you thought about those words more young kids came up to you. one resting her head against your shoulder. “well what makes me happy is you guys. this planet. plants. i love plants. oooh okay so we have this, um,” you pretended to play the custom drums for them, “music. but it sounds more like this.” you created a hushed almost screaming music. the kids laughed, some shook their heads. “it’s true. it’s called rock n roll. i love the rain, it makes it cozy in bed.” in that moment you paused. you looked up to see jake leaning against the door frame. it was so strange seeing him in a different state. he looked so different yet so familiar. he was everything to you in the na’vi form and as a human. “what i love most, however, is strawberries. when i was little, my mother used to plant so many strawberries. they are these tiny fruits, delicious, they are bright red with little seeds in them. my mother used to pick them for me and give them to me for dessert. my face was red with strawberry juice but then us humans messed it up. there were less and less strawberries until there were no more. i can’t remember the last time i had one.” you chuckled, reminiscing about your childhood. “i wish we took care of our planet the way you are taking care of yours.” you pointed to the children.
“maybe one day you can.” one of the young boys said.
“we find you strawlerry,” the young girl announced.
you laughed as you patted their head. “perhaps. either way we must all head to bed.” you stretched, swaying the children away.
—————————————————-—————————————————-——
the children said their goodbyes and finally there was silence. jake was in his hammock next to you. yours swayed in the wind, gently. the breeze usually would put you to sleep but your mind had other ideas. you were anxious this night. the thoughts buzzed in your brain. what were you doing here? like, really truly, doing here? you had your group here to do what? what did they want from pandora? they already ruined earth, you were hoping they weren’t going to ruin this planet? just then a memory of your mother flashed in your mind. the way the earth below you felt. the dirt digging into your toes, the sun beaming, the air smelled fresh, you were only just a little girl. in an instant it was all gone by humans.
“no,” you shot up. sweat forming on your face. “no, no, we can’t let this happen.” you couldn’t stop the breathing. damn, you wished that was gone, panic attacks in dreamwalkers. “what if, what if?” you put a steady hand on your chest. you then felt your hammock shift behind you. your head was quickly turned by jake, your partner in this mission.
“y/n,” his worried eyes searched yours. “y/n, what’s wrong?”
“i-i think i’m having a panic attack,” you tried to gasp for air but you felt like there wasn’t enough air to begin with.
“shit,” he muttered, knowing what it was like to have panic attacks as he had them much after his brother died. “y/n, look at me, only me. i got you. i promise nothing is gonna happen to you, not while i’m here. you got this.” he grabbed your hand, gently. he placed his hands on your chest, upon your heart to comfort you. he breathed with you, wanting you to steady yourself. “i got you sweetheart, you’re not goin anywhere. that’s it. slow and steady.”
it was bizarre because here you were looking at a blue alien but you still saw jake. you saw the guy that got drunk at parties and you had to take his busted ass home to help him throw up. or you still saw the jake that told the most corniest jokes and would want to beat up any guy that dumped you. you saw that jake, your human jake. you bit your lip as your hand crept up to his face.
“tell me what’s wrong,” jake finally said after he noticed your breathing getting slower and you were starting to become normal again.
“i’m scared jake. i’m scared we’re gonna mess this up. that i’m gonna mess this up. i don’t know if i can do that. i don’t think i’m meant for this.” tears pooled in your eyes.
“hey, you stop that nonsense crap you hear me. you are an amazing person y/n, the best person i know. you have saved my ass more times than i can count and you always laugh at my jokes.”
you chuckled.
“see, got you chuckling.” jake smiled. his hands now both grasped your hands to show that he was there with you.
“i wish i didn’t feel nothing. like have any emotions, then maybe i could do this easier. i’m just scared.”
“hey,” jake’s hands were now holding your face, wiping your tears. “there’s nothing to be scared about,” his deep voice whispered. “well except maybe the bugs but i’ll always kill them for you.”
you gave him a glare, “you know, the na’vi don’t like killing. me on the other hand i would gladly kill a roach.” you giggled.
“yeah i remember. i had to use my wheels to kill that one by the bar, you screamed so loud.” jake couldn’t help but laugh and you slapped his arm.
“i was embarrassed by that, okay, my date was there. he probably thought i was crazy.” you pouted.
jake gently moved your braid behind your shoulder, noticing how soft and beautiful it was on you, but then again he always thought you were gorgeous as a human as well. “but there’s nothing to be scared about. you’re so strong, the na’vi people like you more than me, and every room you walk into, aliens or humans, you light up people's lives. you make them smile and just become happy. you could never hurt anyone and i think the na’vi know this. i know this. that’s what makes you so special and perfect for this job.” jake leaned his forehead against yours. “c’mon lets go to bed.” he laid in the hammock.
“jake, what are you doing?” you giggled like a schoolgirl. “i swear if this is your fart joke again, i will be leaving this planet and going to mars. i’ve heard they have amazing spots there.”
“what do you mean?” jake acted innocent. “i wasn’t! and besides, i don’t even know if these things fart.” jake turned and showed you his butt.
“ok put that thing away, you’re wearing a thong remember buddy.” you were now starting to get comfortable in the hammock.
“yeah…now i know the pain you go through.”
“wait…how do you know i wear one?”
jake was silent.
“jake sully!”
“i saw it okay! don’t kill me!”
“jake!”
“it was pink!” he grinned the biggest grin while moving his eyebrows. “it was cute, the little rhinestones.”
“i hate you,” you were flustered.
“i know you love me.” jake wrapped his arms around you. you never realized how big he was as a na’vi. but he fully covered you. “goodnight y/n.” jake kissed the top of your head, resting his chin against it.
“umm jake,” your words came out muffled as you were in his chest. “do you think this thing can hold us both?”
jake opened his eyes and looked around, “well if we fall and i bust my ass, i’ll try to make sure you land on top of me so you don’t get hurt.”
you shrugged, “okay good plan.” you nuzzled deeper into him. he still had his comforting smell of him as a human. this was your jake. the one that would always be there for you. his touch comforted you so much and you knew he meant all of his words. “thank you jake.” you whispered with a smile.
jake’s smile crept on his face as the critters and the night life kept on going. you two stayed peacefully in the breeze, sleep overcoming one another.

𝐓𝐎𝐉𝐈 is a highly self-assured man who prioritizes his pride out of habit, but when it comes to you, things turn out very differently. he wanted you both to be honest about your emotions, thoughts, and insecurities when you two first started dating in order for the relationship to work. yall might believe that toji lacks empathy and won't attempt to comfort you, but that is never the case. he cares about you and wants you to share your issues. he would be furious if he saw you distressed because he had failed to "protect" you. toji is not naive, he is aware of what a panic attack is but is unsure of how to handle one. primarily because he can see your trembling form on the ground sobbing uncontrollably. he would try to calm you down by cradling you as soon as possible. he is concerned to see you in this state but keeps his composure. he'll make an effort to comfort you and comprehend. "babe its alright, im with you don't you worry about anything."
𝐆𝐄𝐓𝐎 is a very mature and patient person. he has the ability to control his emotions and proceed slowly, which is something you admire about him and demonstrates his appreciation for you and desire to uphold the connection. he will give you the space you need to speak when you are ready; he doesn't want you to talk because you feel pressured to or in any other way. geto would stay by your side until you were composed and prepared to speak, giving you hugs, holding your hands, and kisses on the cheek. geto is observant and fast to assist you when something is wrong, just like gojo. if you ever feel like you’re going to throw up, he'll bring you some water and hold your hair back. Your trembling causes him concern. he runs to your aid and gives you a close embrace while speaking in a soft voice. "y/n its okay, take you time, breathe for me my love."

Let's Be Us Again
Fandom: Dreamworks Trolls
Pairings: Hickory/John Dory
Summary:  Hickory was certainly the last troll John Dory thought he'd see after moving to Pop Village. To say it was a shock was a bit of an understatement. But they could pick up where they'd left off before, right?....right? Excerpt:
"John Dory," Hickory breathed, his eyes widening as they landed on John, the smile slipping from his lips.
"Oh! How do you two know each other?" Poppy asked, tilting her head slightly as she looked between the two, a curious smile on her face. Floyd glanced between them and shifted closer to his brother, as if he could tell that John was having a bit of an internal panic.
"That's a-uhm…a bit of a long story," John finally chuckled, his smile crooked as he spoke, "Probably, what? A couple of decades in the making?" Link to the fic on AO3 There's now a sequel! You can find it here or over on AO3
It was a day like any other, in John's humble opinion. The sun was shining, birds were chirping, and Poppy was banging at his door and shouting excitedly about her plans for the day.
Ever since they'd rescued Floyd from Mount Rageous, John Dory had been settled in Rhonda just outside of Pop Village. Poppy had taken this as explicit permission to bug the eldest brother with any and all tasks she felt could either "benefit from his previous experience as a band leader", or something she felt he'd genuinely enjoy. Which honestly, John was more than okay with. The pop queen had certainly grown on him, and he could easily see how she'd gotten his youngest brother wrapped around her finger.
Today, Poppy had requested John's help with some activities for aspiring singers that she'd set up at the community hall. She said she thought he'd be a great inspiration, and maybe he could help with teaching some basics about being in a band. He didn't really know how she figured that, given how he'd caused his own band to break up and not see each other for twenty years, but he supposed her heart was in the right place. She'd also managed to drag Floyd into it as well, so there was also that.
"I'm coming, Poppyseed," John laughed as he pushed open Rhonda's door and stepped into the sunshine. "Someone's impatient."
"Oh, I'm just so excited! The kids are gonna LOVE you guys! I made some of them listen to your old records and they got SO excited," Poppy practically squealed as she bounced on her toes. "I also thought we could stop by the market to grab some breakfast before we head over! There's a trading caravan from Lonesome Flats that rolled into town last night. There might be something new to try!"
John chuckled at Poppy's enthusiasm as he strolled over to Floyd, pulling his brother into a side hug. "Sounds like a plan, Popstar. How're you feeling, Floyd?"
The younger troll had been slowly but surely gaining his energy and health back since being freed from his diamond prison. When he'd first arrived in Pop Village he couldn't even leave Branch's bunker without an escort of at least two of his brothers to ensure they could get him back home if he collapsed. Now he simply needed a walking cane to help him get around, and a break every couple of hours to recoup his energy.
"I'm okay," Floyd sighed, smiling as he touched John's hand on his shoulder, "Feeling a little exhausted already just watching Poppy jump around, but I think today will be good."
John dipped his head in a short nod, giving his brother a friendly little shake before letting him go to strike a pose and point towards the market. "Then let's BRO!"
Poppy snorted at his antics, but skipped ahead of the brothers down the path towards the market, while Floyd rolled his eyes with a fond smile on his face.
~
Poppy hadn't been kidding about the caravan from Lonesome Flats. The market was practically overrun with country trolls - both those looking to trade or sell their wares, and those looking to bring something "exotic" back home with them. Children, both pop and country, ran amok through the crowd, nearly tripping just about anyone who wanted to move more than a foot through the area.
"Holy smokes!" John crowed as an especially rambunctious duo ran in front of him, causing him to stop fast and pinwheel his arms through the air to ensure he didn't fall over.
"Careful, old man," Floyd teased, poking his brother in the side with the end of his cane, "or you might be needing one of these."
"Shut up," John snorted, shoving Floyd lightly, making the younger troll catch himself with said cane as they both laughed.
"Oh my GOSH!" Poppy suddenly shrieked in front of the two of them, her shout causing a small handful of trolls to turn and look to see what she was yelling about. John and Floyd were among them - Floyd with a look of curiosity on his face, while John looked something like a puffalo caught in a searchlight.
"HICKORY!" Poppy screeched, before running off like a shot through the crowd, dodging around children and adults alike before practically tackling a troll to the ground some ways away from the brothers. The two glanced at each other, Floyd's expression changing from curiosity to one of worry even as John plastered a grin on his face.
"Let's go see who Poppyseed just put into the hospital, yeah?" John Dory said with a bit of a strained laugh, gesturing for Floyd to move ahead of him through the crowd.
Floyd narrowed his eyes at his brother, poking him in the chest before moving forward. "We're gonna talk about how you just looked like you swallowed a sour berry whole later, mister," he sniffed, before shuffling though the crowd, being mindful of his cane and the running children as he maneuvered around the other trolls in the market.
In the meantime, John rubbed absently at the spot Floyd had poked him while a million and one thoughts ran through his head. It couldn't possibly be his Hickory. The last he'd heard, he had gotten into some sort of accident on a mountain top and disappeared. At least, that was the rumor. He hadn't wanted to know anymore than that. He followed after his brother after a moment, bumping into and apologizing to a couple of trolls on his way as his mind wandered.
"-and then we had to fight some giants in order to get his brothers back! We totally hit the perfect family harmony and saved everyone." Poppy was just finishing a high speed ramble as the brothers approached, bouncing excitedly on her toes in front of a county troll with only two legs, his wide cowboy hat covering half his face. John let out a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. It definitely couldn't be his Hickory, then.
"S'at so? My, that certainly sounds like some adventure. Glad t'hear y'all got everyone back safe and sound. I'd love to meet all of Branch's brothers," the country troll drawled, a low chuckle leaving him as he tipped his cowboy hat back to grin at Poppy. John's breath caught in his throat.
"Well, you're in luck! I happen to have two of them here with me right now," Poppy enthused, turning with a flourish to gesture at the approaching duo. "The one with the magenta hair is Floyd, the one who was captured first and started our whole adventure, and the other is-"
"John Dory," Hickory breathed, his eyes widening as they landed on John, the smile slipping from his lips.
A couple of decades in the making?"
Hickory visibly swallowed, letting out an awkward sounding laugh, "Somethin' like that, I s'pose."
"So, you got yourself a county accent, huh? Did you finally find what you were looking for in Lonesome Flats?" John asked, the tension in his chest loosening slightly. At least it was nice to know Hickory hadn't died. And, sure, perhaps they hadn't parted on the best of terms, but he couldn't exactly blame Hickory for leaving the way he had.
"Mm, not exactly," Hickory shrugged, tugging at his vest. "but I s'pose sort of somethin' to that effect. I mean…M'not a bounty hunter anymore, if that's what yer askin'."
John nodded slightly, taking a deep breath and letting it out slowly. It was like the tension slowly bled from his body as his shoulders loosened and a genuine smile curled his lips. He'd always worried that if he ever saw Hickory again that he would either be filled with dread, anger or unending sadness. But, in reality, he just felt a wave of relief that the other was okay and seemed to be doing well. "I'm…I'm really happy to see you, Hick."
The country troll blinked, surprise blatant on his face at John Dory's confession. Poppy rocked on her heels as the two older trolls looked at each other, obviously lost in their own little world. Floyd shuffled closer to her, biting at his lower lip as he watched the cavalcade of emotions wash over his brothers face.
"Uh, well," Poppy coughed, breaking the moment and causing all eyes to land on her, "It was super nice to see you Hickory. I heard the caravan will be in town for, like, a week? We'll catch up later! We're gonna have a big party to welcome you guys tomorrow, so I'll see you then! Right now we were actually just heading to grab breakfast before going over to the community center." She gestured over her shoulder towards the other side of town.
"Oh. Alright then, miss Poppy. I'll see you tomorrow," Hickory said, his charming smile coming back as he swept his hat off to bow slightly to the Queen of Pop. Poppy simply giggled and waved a hand at him as she rolled her eyes. Floyd wrinkled his nose at the gestured, still not quite sure how he felt about this troll from his brothers past.
"It was nice to see you, Hickory," John began, taking a step to follow Poppy and Floyd, before the pink troll shoved him back to where he'd been standing, a grin on her face.
"No, no! You two obviously haven't seen each other in a while! You should stay here and catch up," Poppy chirped, patting John on the shoulder before spinning away from him. "The kids'll understand if we postpone for a few days. Plus! I'm sure most of them will want to come see what the traders brought from Lonesome Flats. They'll probably be too distracted to pay much attention to anything else." She flashed John a grin over her shoulder as she manhandled Floyd into walking next to her, the magenta haired troll squawking indignantly as he was all but pushed away. "We'll go let them know, and we'll see you later! Enjoy yourselves!" She waved at them as she hustled Floyd away.
"Poppy!" Floyd grunted, trying and failing to dig his heels in as the Queen pushed him along. "What're you doing?! John looked so upset when he saw that troll! I can't just leave him like that!"
"We're not going to leave them."
"What? But you just said-"
"Yes. We're going to go to the community center to tell the kids that we're postponing the class, but then we're going back to spy on those two. You think I'm not also curious about how they reacted to each other?! For all that is trolly, Floyd, it looked like Hickory was about to faint when he saw John Dory. I need to know what that's all about."
Floyd let out a breathy laugh as he began walking on his own at Poppy's admission of curiosity and concern. He should've known better than to question her.
~
Meanwhile, John was staring after the two of them somewhat forlornly. Sure, he was happy to see Hickory, but being suddenly left alone with him? This was, perhaps, a bit much for his heart to handle at the moment.
"Uhh," John said unhelpfully as he turned back to Hickory, who looked equally as confused and unsettled as John felt. "Should we…go get breakfast?"
Hickory blinked at him before an easy grin split his face and he settled his cowboy hat back on his head and swept his arm out towards the market at large. "After you."
John snorted and rolled his eyes before gesturing for Hickory to follow him through the bustling market. He lead them to the opposite end of the market, where there were fewer trolls roaming around, and no caravan tents set up. There, a small bakery stand sat, where John ordered a couple of muffins and some coffee for the two of them.
"Thanks," Hickory hummed as the two of them sat at a small table off to the side of the stand, pulling his hat off and setting it to the side before picking up his coffee cup to inhale the aroma.
"No problem," John said with a shrug, picking at the muffin he had sat in front of himself. "So, uh…Lonesome Flats, huh? What made you settle down there?"
"Just gettin' right to it, huh?" Hickory chuckled, glancing up at John through his eye lashes. "It's a bit of a long story, though I s'pose we've got time t'spare. Also, just to clear one thing up right quick, I've lived there for 'bout a year, but can't really say I'm much settled there."
"But you're settled enough to have picked up their accent?" John prodded, Hickory wincing slightly at the comment.
"You know that's just part of blending in, mein freund," Hickory sighed, slipping into his natural accent easily.
"Ah, there it is," John snorted derisively, shaking his head as he popped a bit of muffin into his mouth, "who're you going after this time? Better be a real scum bag or I'm going to have to tell Poppy what you're up to."
"I already told you, I'm not a bounty hunter anymore," Hickory stated, shaking his head slightly, his ears lowering slightly as he watched John pick at his muffin. "Poppy and Branch helped me get out of that life. I don't think even Dickory is doing it anymore."
John paused in the destruction of his breakfast, looking up at Hickory with a light frown. "But your brother-"
"Said it was the only thing the two of us were good for. Ja, I know," Hickory shrugged, blowing hair out of his face. "But after the whole Rock Apocalypse thing, I just-" Hickory cut himself off as he took a deep breath and glanced up at the trees and sky above them. "Queen Poppy was the bounty. We were meant to bring her and the pop string to Queen Barb, in order to secure a safe place for the yodelers to keep their music. Dickory and I established ourselves in Lonesome Flats and spread a story about getting lost in an avalanche in the mountains so that no one would look for us. But, when we finally found Poppy and Branch…She was different from what I expected." He turned his gaze back to John Dory and smiled warmly. "We grew up hearing all these horror stories about Pop trolls stealing everyone's music, du weisst? But all she wanted to do was help everyone live in harmony. She wanted everyone to be able to enjoy each others music. And I- Well, it reminded me of you. And how, when we were younger, you said you wanted to travel and experience everything you possibly could. I wanted that. I wanted that for everyone. Not just the yodelers." He rolled his shoulders and took a sip of his coffee, his voice shifting back into the country drawl John had heard when they'd first come across Hickory in the market, "So, I tried to help miss Poppy get away from Barb with the Pop string. But Dickory-" he rolled his eyes and glared off to the side, "He blew our cover."
John sat enraptured by Hickory's story, unconsciously resting his cheek in the palm of his hand and leaning forward. He blinked as Hickory paused, wrinkling his nose. "How'd he blow your cover?"
Hickory's cheeks suddenly grew dark as he ducked his head and let out a nervous chuckle. "Well, y'know, country trolls usually have four legs? And my brother and I, we most defintely don't?"
John frowned, sitting back in his chair. "Yeah? What does that have to do with-" he froze, a slow realization dawning on his face, before he let out a sudden bark of laughter. "Oh my troll! Did you two make a freaking costume?!"
Hickory hummed abashedly and rubbed at his neck. "Yessir. Dickory may have been the back end o' the horse," he muttered as he cringed, grinning crookedly at John, "he heard me tryin' to warn Poppy to run and, well, he ripped the costume apart."
John couldn't stop the peels of laughter that left him at the mental image of Dickory angrily ripping himself out of the back end of a pair of pants, slapping the table and nearly knocking their coffees over. "Hooooboy, that is PRICELSS!" He hiccupped as his laughter subsided after a moment, wiping at his watery eyes. "He must've been so pissed at you."
"Bit of an understatement, I'm afraid," Hickory shrugged, "After miss Poppy saved everyone, I pretty much told Dickory off an' moved to Lonesome Flats."
"And he just let you go?"
"I threatened to sick Poppy on 'im if he tried to pull me back into huntin'. She knows about it, too, so if I suddenly disappear from Lonesome Flats or she gets wind that somethin' happened to me, she promised to come find me. She's sweet like that."
John nodded, an easy smile on his face. "Yeah, she is. I'm really glad Branch has her in his life."
"I'm still tryin' to wrap my head around the fact that he's your brother! You talked about your brothers a bit, but what a small world we seem to live in," Hickory chuckled. "I'm also kinda surprised you even wanted to talk t'me, if I'm bein' honest."
John blinked at the sudden shift in tone from the other, leaning back in his seat a bit and wrapping his fingers around his coffee cup. "Well," he sighed, "I wont' lie. I used to imagine running into you a lot, after you first left. At first I was really upset, then I just became angry." He scowled down at his coffee. "I imagined so many different scenarios. In most of them I told you off for everything. Sometimes I did something nasty to get back at you. But, when I finally saw you…" He lifted his gaze, his frown slipping into an easy smile, "I was just happy to see that you were alive and seemed to be doing well. I guess that old saying that time heals all wounds really is true."
Hickory stared at John for a minute, his breath catching in his throat. "I'm so sorry, Johnny…"
"Please," John rocked back in his chair, turning away with a rueful grin, while waving a hand through the air, "I don't think I ever really blamed you for leaving. You were young - we both were. And I'm not exactly-" he gestured vaguely at himself, "y'know."
Hickory shook his head adamantly at John Dory, sitting forward to slide his hand across the table and rest it over John's. "Don't ever say that about yerself, darlin'," Hickory crooned, gently squeezing John's fingers, "You are so much more than you give yerself credit for."
John Dory blinked at Hickory, a flush quickly spreading across his face the longer he stared at the other. He cleared his throat after a moment, pulling his hand away from Hickory to cover one of his flaming cheeks, while an embarrassed trill of a laugh escaped him. "Don't say stuff like that, Hick," he said through a strained chuckle, "You're gonna give me ideas.
A grin settled on Hickory's face at John's reaction to his touch, taking the opportunity of the other looking in the opposite direction to slide his chair around the table to sit closer to John. "Oh, yeah? What kinda ideas, darlin'?"
John all but squeaked when he realized how much closer Hickory had gotten to him, his cheeks growing impossibly brighter as he whipped his head around to stare wide eyed at the bounty hunter turned cowboy.
~
Meanwhile, Poppy and Floyd had returned from their quick trip to the community center, and were both currently crouched inconspicuously behind a bush to watch the two having breakfast.
"I can't hear what they're saying," Poppy whined under her breath, shifting to try and get a better view of the two.
"If we get any closer they'll know we're here," Floyd sighed, shifting to settle more comfortably on his knees. "John has ridiculous hearing, and if Hickory really used to be a bounty hunter, then I can only imagine how quickly he'd be able to tell he was being spied on."
"Yeah, but," Poppy flopped back down next to Floyd, a pout on her lips, "I really want to know what Hickory said to make John Dory blush like that."
"John Dory is blushing?!" Floyd quickly sat up, shoving a branch out of his way to get a better look at the table. He gasped quietly at seeing how bashful his brother looked as Hickory got close to him, his eyes wide at the sight. Even wracking his brain for every memory he had of John, he couldn't think of a time he'd ever seen his brother look so ruffled. That was certainly something. "I don't think I've ever seen John look so…bashful."
"I know! Isn't it cute?!" Poppy squealed quietly at Floyd, grabbing at his shoulder in her enthusiasm. "Wouldn't they be SUCH a cute couple?! Awww," she sighed, letting Floyd go to cup her own cheeks, "They have history, and they look like they get along so well! Ahhhh! We HAVE to get them together!" By the end of her rant Poppy was practically rasping to keep herself from shouting about the couple sat across from them.
Floyd had his doubts, however, about how the two would do as a couple. Especially after the anxiety he could feel radiate off of John Dory when they'd first come across Hickory at the market. "I mean, Hickory definitely knows how to push John's buttons. I don't know if that's necessarily a good thing yet or not."
"What do you mean?"
The two sat back, letting the bush block their view for the time being.
"Well…John tensed up pretty badly when he first saw Hickory. Maybe their history is more complicated than we can appreciate right now. I mean, they do look like they're getting along right now, I can't argue that. But, who knows how long that will last. John's never really been one to give up the reins on a situation, if you forgive the pun. Hickory seems like he might have a bit of a big personality, from what I've seen so far, and I can't imagine that will mesh well with John's, uhm…exuberant tendencies."
Poppy frowned lightly at Floyd, tapping at her chin thoughtfully. "Hmmm…maybe you're right. I guess we should probably just keep an eye on them for now. So we can at least be there if something happens between them. Be it bad," she wiggled her eyebrows at Floyd who let out a fond sigh of exasperation at her, "or good!"
When the two looked back out from behind the bush they both panicked slightly at finding the table where John and Hickory had been abandoned.
"Where'd they go?!"
~
"Sooo," John drew the word out as he and Hickory wandered through the crowded market place, snapping his fingers and slapping his hands together absently, "What've you been up to since moving to Lonesome Flats?"
Hickory chuckled at John's fidgeting, deciding to take a chance and catch one of John's swinging hands in one of his own. "Well, first I had t'make it up to miss Delta and the other country trolls for trickin' them. But, they were real nice about everythin', after I told 'em about Dickory and how I'd grown up. Got myself a nice little house, and a job workin' at one o' the shops there. Shortly after that, I heard about Poppy startin' talks with all of the troll leaders to work on this idea of a cross kingdom trade route. A way for all different kinds of trolls to experience each others cultures and music. Anyone who wanted to volunteer could represent their home kingdom and travel around. Took a bit a doin', so I think our group's only been at it for a few months? We've gone through Vibe City and Volcano Rock City so far. Pop Village is stop number three." He wiggled three fingers in the air to show the number of stops, grinning as he noted that John's hand was still firmly in his own without any signs of pulling away.
"You finally got your wish to travel wherever you wanted, huh?" John asked, a soft smile on his face. "I'm glad to hear it, Hick. After Pop village, where's your next stop?"
Hickory shrugged, dipping his head slightly to watch their hands as he gently began to swing them back and forth. "I think the caravan is headed up to Symphonyville next. Dunno if I'm really interested in headin' into the mountains, though, if I'm bein' honest." John gave his hand a little squeeze, causing Hickory to glance up at the other troll shyly. "I might be tempted t'stay in Pop Village for an extended amount of time."
John cleared his throat as he noticed the look on Hickory's face, finally pulling his hand away to tuck it into the pocket of his vest. Hickory's face fell as John hunched his shoulders slightly, but he accepted the reaction and tucked his own thumbs under his belt. He couldn't expect John to forgive him completely so soon.
"Well, y'know, there's plenty of room here, if you did want to stay," John finally said after a minute or two of silence between the two, shrugging his shoulders nonchalantly. "Rhonda and I stay just outside the village, near Branch's bunker. There's loads of room out there to expand living areas."
"Rhonda?" Hickory asked, his steps faltering slightly at hearing the name. Did John have a girlfriend? He shifted so they were walking a little further apart, now feeling a bit like an ass for his blatant flirting.
"Yeah! My armadillo bus," John said, his face lighting up as he spoke, grinning widely at Hickory, "I found her not too long after we split up, when I went back to the Neverglade trail. She's super smart, and really sweet. You wanna meet her?"
Hickory let out a breath, a sudden wave of relief washing over him at the knowledge that he hadn't been blatantly stepping on anyone's toes. "Yeah, 'course," he hummed, trotting along next to John as they headed towards the edge of town.
"She's a licker, I'll give you that much warning," John laughed, more bounce in his step as they moved away from the crowds, "She's also been known to try and eat people when she first meets them, but don't worry too much about that. I'm sure she won't try to eat you if you're with me."
A slightly nervous chuckle escaped Hickory as he followed John, starting to wonder if him meeting the bus critter was really that great of an idea. "If you say so, darlin'."
"I do say so," John chirped, snapping his goggles a little to emphasize his point. Hickory snorted quietly at the gesture, endlessly pleased that John had yet to call him out on using the endearment on him yet.
"Here she is!" John crowded loudly as the two stepped into a clearing, the large armadillo bus jumping up excitedly at seeing John. She wagged her tail, causing her whole back end to swing as she bound forward, smacking her entire face into John's chest, causing the troll to loose his breath and stumble backwards with a laugh. "Down girl," he wheezed, patting her face before her attention was caught on Hickory.
The ex bounty hunter froze as she stared him down, her tail freezing as her gaze bore into him. He swallowed thickly, shifting slightly to get ready to run, before Rhonda let out a sudden rumbling roar of a sound and licked Hickory. He gasped as he stumbled back, his hat going flying, as he found himself absolutely coated in glittery slobber.
"Awww, she likes you!" John laughed, patting Rhonda on the side as she purred and flopped herself down next to him.
"Yay?" Hickory shook the slobber off his arms, before wiping at his face, letting out little sounds of disgust as he did so. "I s'pose it's just a good thing she didn't try t'eat me," he all but grumbled, turning to look for where his hat had landed.
"Well, that might still happen. Rhonda's unpredictable like that," John chuckled, making a quick kissy face at the armadillo bus who cooed back at him, before looking back to Hickory. "You wanna shower that off?"
Hickory paused at the offer, blinking in surprise. "You comin' onto me, Johnny?" he teased, winking playfully at John. He knew he must look an absolute sight right now, but the mild flirt still managed to get John's cheeks flaming.
"No! I'm just offering you my shower," John scoffed, rolling his eyes as he rubbed at one of his warm cheeks. "C'mon, you. Rhonda's got a shower inside." He waved for Hickory to follow as he opened Rhonda's door and hopped inside.
~
"They could be anywhere! Poppy, please. Let's take a break," Floyd huffed, doing his best to keep up with the Queen of Pop, but his energy was quickly flagging. He stopped in the middle of a path in the market, doing his best to catch his breath.
Poppy glanced back at Floyd, suddenly feeling terrible for running the poor troll practically ragged as they ran around the market trying to find where John Dory and Hickory had gone. "Sorry, Floyd," she sighed, moving to support him as they shuffled over to a bench so they could sit down. "I just- well, you said so yourself. Something could go wrong while they're together."
"Hey now, I didn't say something might go wrong. I just think it'd be best to keep an eye on them in case John gets overwhelmed, or he starts a fight," Floyd muttered, stretching his legs out in front of himself as they sat down.
"Exactly. In case something goes wrong," Poppy said as she flopped herself down next to Floyd.
They both jerked slightly when they heard the tell tale sound of Rhonda roaring.
"Ah," Floyd laughed, nodding in the direction of Rhonda's clearing, "There they are."
~
John hovered outside the door of his small bathroom, wringing the towel he'd dug out between his hands. He could hear Hickory humming to himself in the shower and it sent a thrill down his spine. Maybe this time could be different? He jumped as he heard the water turn off, quickly hooking the towel onto the doorknob and stepping away. "Towel's on the knob for you!" he called through the door before moving to the couch in the larger portion of his living space.
"Thank you kindly, darlin'," Hickory called from the bathroom, the door opening ever so slightly as the country troll pulled the towel inside.
John flushed at the endearment. It's not like he hadn't noticed Hickory using it, it was just…well, it was nice to have someone be immediately kind to him upon reuniting. Perhaps the whole adventure with his brothers and their sour reunions were still lingering on his heart and mind. Just a little.
"That's better," Hickory sighed as he stepped out of the bathroom, pulling John from his thoughts. The towel was draped around his shoulders to catch the water dripping from his hair. Even damp the ends still curled up to defy the pull of gravity. "Nothin' against yer bus, but I'm not the biggest fan o' glitter. It gets in places it really shouldn't be," he said with a light laugh and a shudder, which caused John to startle into laughing as well.
"Yeah. Sorry not sorry," John snorted, waving for Hickory to sit next to him on the couch.
Once Hickory sat the two stewed in silence for a minute. John stared off at the board of Brozone pictures Branch had put together that he hadn't yet had the heart to dismantle, while Hickory fidgeted with his fingers.
"I missed you," Hickory finally breathed, breaking the silence and swallowing thickly after the admission.
John blinked, turning to face Hickory with a genuine look of surprise on his face.
"What? How's that surprisin'?" Hickory asked, a crooked smirk on his lips.
"If you knew my track record, it really wouldn't be so surprising that I'm surprised," John snorted derisively, shrugging his shoulders. "I don't know if you remember, but I broke up my brothers band before I started traveling. We did not part ways on good terms. And none of them were exactly pleased to see me when we met up again."
"A'course I remember," Hickory murmured, shifting so he was sat a bit closer to John, their thighs touching, "I'm sorry to hear that you didn't have the best a' reunions with 'em. But, from what Poppy told me, and the fact that yer still here, I assume thing's've gotten a bit better? Weren't you with one o' yer brothers when we met at the market?"
"Yeah. That was Floyd. He's the only one who didn't really seem to hold a grudge over everything. But, he's also sort of dependent on me and Branch right now, still. He got hurt pretty bad when he was captured. So, y'know, I don't really know if that's actual forgiveness, or just playing nice while he needs help," John said with a self depreciating laugh. He shrugged, turning a wobbly smile on Hickory, "So, yeah. It's a bit surprising that someone who walked out on me would miss me."
Hickory shifted back as if he'd been hit, biting his lip as he looked to his knees. "You know why I had t'leave, John," he breathed, twisting his fingers into the damp towel around his neck.
"Yeah. Still doesn't change the fact that it hurt."
Hickory nodded, letting out a breath. "Can we…can we try to start again? Believe it or not, Johnny, but ya mean a whole lot t'me. I'd really like it if we could-" he cut himself off with a startled gasp as arms suddenly wrapped around him, squeezing him in a hug.
"Of course," John breathed into Hickory's hair, "I missed you, too. Of course we can start over."
A warm smile bloomed on Hickory's face as he turned to nudge his nose against John's temple, chuckling quietly at the odd angle the other had pulled him into a hug at. "Thank you," he murmured, lifting an arm to awkwardly half return the hug, since the other was currently pinned to his side.
~
"Well, there's Rhonda," Floyd sighed, frowning as he looked around the clearing, where there was no sign of John or Hickory.
Poppy huffed, frowning as she skipped a little ahead of Floyd to peer around the clearing, but doing her best not to alert Rhonda of their presence. She had seemingly fallen asleep since they'd heard her roar. "Where did they go now," Poppy whined, tossing her head and arms back in exasperation.
"I don't-oh!" Floyd began, before grabbing Poppy and dragging her into some tall grass as Rhonda's door swung open. They watched as John hopped down from the bus critter, holding his hand up to take Hickory's as he descended from the bus as well. They seemed to be in a quiet conversation, smiling and laughing as they exited the bus and began to walk down a trail that lead further into the forest.
"C'mon!" Poppy chirped, her energy renewed as she tugged Floyd along by his wrist.
~
"Yeah, so after we rescued Floyd, I decided to stick around Pop Village. As much as I love traveling, getting to know my brothers is also pretty important to me. I missed out on so much, y'know?"
Hickory nodded as he listened to John, a fond little smile on his face as they meandered down the forest trail. He'd truly missed getting to hear John Dory's stories. Well, just him talking in general, really. He knew John liked to talk, but he liked it even better when someone genuinely listened to him, and that was probably one of Hickory's favorite things to do.
"So, you think yer gonna settle down here in Pop Village? Or just stay until Floyd can get along without a cane?"
John clicked his tongue and shrugged as he climbed up onto a fallen branch. He held his arms out as he began to walk along it like a tight rope, wobbling a little as it rocked slightly beneath his feet.
"Depends on how long it takes for Branch to get sick of me, I guess," he said with a derisive little laugh, causing Hickory to frown.
"What'd I say about talkin' about yerself like that?" Hickory scolded, shoving the branch slightly to make John stumble and catch himself.
"Hey!" John clung to a small twig as the base of the branch wobbled beneath his feet. "Trying to kill me?!"
"No. Just tryin' to redirect your stupid self depreciatin' bullshit," Hickory said with a thin grin. "Yer brothers love you."
"You say that-"
"I do!" Hickory cut him off, shoving the branch again, causing John to cuss him out as he stumbled to catch himself again. "I still love Dickory, even though he dragged me over hells half acre to hunt down trolls for plenty of not so savory folks. I still love 'im, even though if I were t'see his stupid face any time soon I'd punch him in the teeth! Yer brothers love you, Johnny, and they're probably more than happy to have you around, whether ya want t'believe it or not."
John snorted above him, but relented. "I guess you've got a point," he muttered, laughing as Hickory responded with a quiet, "a'course I do." He shook his head slightly, rolling his eyes with a grin and most certainly not paying attention to his feet and where he was walking. Because, if he had, then he would've noticed the patch of lichen growing on the fallen branch. He gasped as his foot slipped, nothing nearby for him to grab onto to keep himself from falling. He braced for the impact of the ground, but was pleasantly surprised when instead he hit something soft and a quiet 'oof' was breathed into his ear.
"Careful there, darlin'," Hickory hummed, grinning down at John as the other turned his head to peer up at his rescuer, "ya gotta watch where yer goin' if yer gonna be climbin' on things." He chuckled as John's face flushed, tipping his head forward a bit to properly get into the teal trolls space. "You alright?"
"Fine," John all but squeaked. He took a breath and cleared his throat at hearing how high his voice had gone. "Fine. I'm fine," he huffed, purposefully lowering his voice an octave, and pulling away from Hickory to tug at his vest and fix his askew goggles. "Let's, uhm, go this way," he added quickly, spinning on his heel to point down another trail, "I think the star gazing club has a meeting place up on a hill with a nice view over Pop Village."
Hickory followed with a self satisfied smirk on his lips, his thumbs hooked into the belt loops on his pants. "Whatever ya say, Johnny."
~
"Did you see that?!" Poppy quietly squealed, shaking Floyd's shoulder in her enthusiasm.
"I did," Floyd hummed, letting the over enthusiastic queen shake him. However, he really couldn't return the excitement she exuded for the two they were following. True enough that John seemed more than happy to be around Hickory, but he couldn't shake the strange feeling of dread in the pit of his stomach every time they had a "cute" interaction.
"Oh my gosh! Maybe we were both worried about nothing," Poppy sighed, stars practically in her eyes as she watched John and Hickory walk away, "Maybe we should let them finish their date in peace." She stood and brushed her skirt off, offering a hand to Floyd.
Floyd took Poppy's hand and help in standing back up, but shook his head at her suggestion to stop following them. "No. No, I don't think that's a good idea yet."
Poppy tilted her head, a frown on her face. "What? Why not?"
Floyd sighed, brushing hair out of his face as he watched his brother disappear up a trail. "I just have this awful feeling in my gut," he admitted, his shoulders drooping, "I don't know why. John looks happy, and they haven't had any sort of interaction that we've seen that should make me think something bad might happen. I just…" He waved a hand vaguely through the air, "I don't know. I'm worried about him."
Poppy stared at Floyd for a minute, as if she was trying to see through him. He swallowed thickly and shifted on his feet, a bit worried that she would call him over protective and silly for his trepidation. But, he was pleasantly surprised when instead a large smile bloomed across her face and she took his hand and squeezed it lightly. "You're a good brother," she stated, before turning to follow John and Hickory again.
~
"Here we are!" John announced unnecessarily as the duo reached a tall hill at the end of the trail.
"S'quite the hill," Hickory laughed as John rolled his eyes.
"It's not the hill that's impressive. It's the view," John retorted, sticking his tongue out at Hickory, even as he grabbed the other trolls hand to tug him along. "C'mon! It's actually kinda impressive."
It was finally Hickory's turn to flush as John tugged him along, a slow grin making its way across his face as the two trudged up the hill.
Upon cresting the hill a spectacular view of Pop Village was exposed. Pods of every size, shape and color hung from the trees, while below you could see the hustle and bustle of the market, where trolls were going about their daily lives. There was a class learning how to manouver flyer bugs zipping around the walkways in the trees, while a heard of puffalo were grazing just outside the edge of the market.
"My," Hickory breathed, before letting out a low whistle, "That is quite the view, isn't it?"
"Yeah," John hummed, before suddenly flopping down in the grass next to Hickory, leaning back on his hands to watch the hustle and bustle of the community below. "I'm kinda surprised more trolls don't come up here for the view? But I guess most pop trolls are more interested in fun, games and parties than sitting quietly."
Hickory settled himself in the grass next to John, while setting his hat to the side. "Never been one to really stick to the mold, have ya, Johnny?"
John tilted his head to smirk at Hickory, shifting to nudge their shoulders together. "Nah. The mold is boring. Plus, I think all those years spent by myself sort of made me forget exactly how energetic pop trolls can be. It can get to be a bit…much."
"What do y'mean, by yerself? Ya never picked up a travelling companion? You always talked about all o' the things you wanted the two of us to do when we were together."
John sighed quietly and shifted so he could tip his head and rest his cheek against Hickory's shoulder. "Nope," he popped the 'p', watching a flyer bug and its rider do a flip in the air, "Between hiking the Neverglade trail, where there really wasn't anyone around, raising Rhonda and moving around so much? Anyone I did meet didn't really want to stay with me very long. Or it just didn't feel right, y'know?"
"Yeah, I know."
With a light frown John tipped his head back a little to try and get a look at Hickory's face, but only really managed to shove his nose into the country trolls cheek. It pulled a chuckle from Hickory, but wasn't really what John was going for. He sat up and leaned forward, catching Hickory's eye. "You didn't find someone out there for you?"
"When?!" Hickory laughed, this time it was his turn to sound sarcastic and self depreciating, "When I was bein' dragged from town to town with no set timeline for when we came or went? Or when I was workin' on a hunt with my brother?" He ran his fingers through his hair, leaving it sticking up at odd angles. "Plus, like you said," he shrugged, "Nothin' felt right."
"I'm sorry."
Hickory wrinkled his nose, turning a bemused smile on John. "What're you sorry for? S'not like you were the one forcing me t'live the life I did. Plus, isn't it some sorta unwritten rule that y'should be happy when ya hear yer ex has been miserable without ya?"
"That'd be a stupid rule," John stated flippantly, "You're not happy I was upset after you left, are you?"
"Course not."
"Then why would I be happy that you were unhappy? I might've been upset for a while, but I only ever wanted you to be happy."
Hickory felt his heart flutter in his chest at John's words, while letting out a slow breath. "Y'mean that?"
"Duh," John snorted, moving his hand to entwine their fingers together, a soft smile on his face. "You were one of the best friends I've ever had, Hick."
"John," Hickory breathed, shifting so he was more fully facing John Dory, "You were mine, too. I thought about ya, so much, when I was out runnin' the roads with Dickory. You have no idea."
John hummed, squeezing Hickory's hand. "I thought about you, too."
Without much warning, Hickory lifted his free hand to cup John's cheek, causing the teal troll to freeze up, a startled look on his face. "Hickory…?"
Hickory didn't answer, simply letting out a soft hum as he leaned forward and pressed his lips to John's while letting his eyes slip shut. He was completely unaware of the somewhat panicked, wide eyed expression on John's face as the county troll pressed close.
"Wanted to do that for a while," Hickory offered as he broke their kiss a moment later while pressing his forehead to John's, eyes still closed. He let out a breathy little laugh as he nudged their noses together, while John could feel his panic slowly begin to ebb away, even as his heart thundered in his chest. "Seein' you in the market today felt like my whole world came crashin' down around my ears, while also finally feelin' like it was all coming back together." He let out a low chuckle, brushing his fingers down from John Dory's cheek to push under John's vest and rest against his shoulder, relishing in the little shiver he could feel as his fingers moved. "The time we spent together, all those years ago, it meant the world to me, Johnny. I want ya to know that." He swept his thumb in little circles against John's shoulder, finally opening his eyes and leaning back a little to take in the flush and startled expression still on John Dory's face. "Thinkin' 'bout you, an' the courage you had to explore the world on yer own when you were still so young. It really helped me through some hard times."
John swallowed thickly, feeling like his skin was on fire while his heart was ready to beat right out of his chest. He was pretty sure his brain was flat lining at this point, as the only thing he managed to say in return was a breathy, "Hickory," before leaning forward to press his own lips to Hickory's. He untangled their fingers so he could cup both of his hands against Hickory's cheeks and pull him in close. That caused the country troll to loose balance slightly and push John a bit, which resulted in John falling back into the grass with a soft 'oof', his breathing quick and vest dislodged from his shoulder.
"Well," Hickory hummed, leaning over John with a grin, his own cheeks flushed dark, "Ain't you a pretty picture?" He trailed his fingers down from John's shoulder, tapping lightly at the flush that had traveled from the teal trolls cheeks to his chest. He then leaned down to kiss John again, pressing the other into the grass.
For a solid minute John was in bliss. It felt like no time at all had passed between them as Hickory's hands explored his fur unbidden and he had the life kissed out of him. He lifted his own hands to comb through Hickory's bright orange locks, pulling slightly as he maneuvered Hickory's face to kiss him more deeply.
~
"I don't need to see this," Floyd groaned, covering his eyes and crouching further behind the tree he and Poppy were hiding behind.
"Shhh!" Poppy waved at him absently, leaning around the tree and letting out a happy little noise as she watched John fall back into the grass.
~
But then reality had to come crashing down around his ears. He had obligations to his brothers. Hickory would be moving on with the caravan in a few days to head into the mountains. He was only just finally getting settled in Pop Village, would a fling with an old flame really be in his best interest? Not to mention, when Hickory had left him before, he's said…He suddenly pushed Hickory away by the shoulders, sucking in a sharp breath even as Hickory let out a confused whine.
"I can't do this."
"Wh-what?" Hickory sat back on his heels, a mix of confusion and hurt on his face.
"I can't let myself fall into old habits," John stated as he sat up, fixing his vest and settling it properly over his shoulders, before pulling his goggles down over his eyes. Hickory could feel his heart plummet at that. He knew perfectly well John's goggles were like a physical wall he could put up between himself and others. "I can't get involved in a fling right now. I've got too much going on." John stood, brushing dirt from his clothes, "And, quite frankly, I'm just too old to be playing games like this anymore."
"Games?!" Hickory shook his head, reaching out towards John, who stepped back out of his reach. "I'm not playin' games!"
"We had fun, yeah?" John stated, a strained smile on his face, "This was fun. Like old times, yeah? Nothing serious, just a bit of fun." John could feel his breaths becoming short and knew he had to leave before he started crying. "I'll see you around, Hick," he said, nodding towards the ex bounty hunter, before hurrying back down the hill.
Hickory stared at the spot John had stood, his breath caught in his throat even as tears welled in his eyes. He knew this was his own fault, but it didn't stop his heart from shattering in his chest.
~
"What just happened?!" Poppy gasped as she watched John practically run down the hill, only to turn and find Floyd already moving as quickly as he could in the direction John had gone.
~
"John!" Floyd shouted once they were a decent distance from the hill. He knew he'd never be able to catch up to John at the pace he could currently go, but wanted to catch him before they got too close to town, where he knew John would put all of his walls back up. His older brother stopped and turned, and Floyd could see tear tracks on his brothers cheeks below his blatantly fogged up goggles.
"H-hey, Floyd," John stuttered, sucking in a breath and obviously trying to compose himself as quickly as possible as Floyd approached, "What're you doing out here? I figured you'd be off with Poppy planning tomorrow's party."
"John Dory," Floyd murmured, dropping his cane so he could reach up and pull John's goggles away from his face and back up into his hair. The reveal caused John's face to crumple, a wretched sob escaping him as Floyd tugged him into a hug. "Shhh. It's okay. I've got you."
John wept as the two shifted to kneel in the middle of the trail, John clinging to Floyd like his life depended on it while Floyd rubbed soothing circles against his back.
~
"Hickory," Poppy said softly as she approached the country troll as he continued to stare into space, silent tears running down his cheeks.
"Wha-oh! Miss Poppy," Hickory gasped, quickly wiping at his face and plastering a smile on as the queen sat in the grass next to him. "What're you doin' out here?"
"Floyd and I were following you guys," Poppy admitted, "We were worried something might happen between you and John Dory. I saw what just happened. Or, well, the gist of it. Did you and John get into a fight?"
Hickory let his smile slip away as he shook his head. "Not exactly, no…"
~
"Do you want to tell me what happened?" Floyd asked after a few long minutes of John crying into his shoulder. The elder sat back to wipe at his face, murmuring a quiet "thanks" as Floyd handed him a handkerchief.
"Do you have time for a stupid story?" John Dory asked, his voice thick from crying.
"Hey now, with a reaction like the one you just had, I'm pretty sure the story isn't stupid," Floyd scolded gently, rubbing at John's shoulder. "C'mon. You can talk to me."
John nodded after a moment, pulling himself to his feet and offering a hand to Floyd. "Okay. But, let's get back to Rhonda. I don't feel like airing my dirty laundry out where anyone could come along and eavesdrop."
"I feel like that's a dig for obviously spying on you."
"That's because it is."
Floyd snorted, glad that his brother at least wasn't so upset that he couldn't still dish out sarcastic remarks where necessary. He took John's help in getting to his feet and the two of them made their way back to Rhonda.
When they reached the bus critters clearing it was as if she could tell John was upset. Instead of the exuberant greeting she'd given him earlier in the day, she simply rumbled sadly at him and nudged him gently with her face.
"Hey hey, baby girl," John cooed, rubbing at her face, "I'll be okay."
Once the two were inside, Floyd forced John to sit at the little table he had for meals, while he dug around in John's cupboards for the tea he knew his brother had picked up some time ago for when Floyd came by for a visit.
"Here we go," Floyd hummed as he finally set two mugs of tea on the table, settling himself across from John Dory, who had been staring at the table, obviously lost in his own thoughts. "You ready to talk to me?"
John sucked in a breath as if coming up from under water. He blinked rapidly at Floyd for a second, before offering a small nod and pulling his tea mug close to himself. "Yeah…Sorry, yeah. It's just-well, the story starts when I was in my late twenties. Maybe twenty-six? Twenty-seven? Something like that. I'd been traveling around for a while, already, but it was before I'd met Rhonda. I was hiking through he mountains, trying to find this little village I'd come across once before when I'd first started traveling, when I was eighteen or nineteen. It had been a really sweet little town, with a population of yodeling trolls. Since it'd been one of my first stops, I didn't really want to stay very long at the time, but as I got older I sort of regretted not sticking around. It'd been the only place I'd ever met yodelers. It was a really unique, niche genre and I wanted to go back." He let out a breath and blew on his tea, lifting it but not taking a sip. "And eventually, I did find it. It was sort of tucked away, so I was running low on supplies and was completely exhausted. The trolls I was staying with had a teenager also staying with them. He was a real sweet kid who helped me get settled in and offered to show me around town when I was feeling up to it."
"Not sure how this is relevant to you breaking down in the forest, John," Floyd muttered, scrunching his nose a little.
"I'm getting to it, ya brat," John snorted, offering a small grin to his brother, before looking back to his tea, "Anyway…So, in the morning when I'm up and about, this kid comes bounding over to me with all of the energy in the world and offers to show me around again. I couldn't really refuse, especially since I was being stared down by the lady whose house I was staying in. So, we went around the town and had a pretty good time. I stayed in the village for a couple of months, and the kid stuck by my side nearly the entire time. When I was getting ready to leave he admitted to having a massive crush on me."
"Oh," Floyd blinked, tilting his head, "this still doesn't-"
"It was Hickory, Floyd," John stated bluntly, cutting his brother off and giving him an unimpressed look over his tea. He then took a loud slurp of his drink, which he knew drove Floyd insane.
"Alright, alright, I'll stop interrupting."
"Thank you. So, anyway, he confesses to me and I have to break it to him that, one, I was planning on leaving in the next few days, and two, he was too young for me. We were at different points in our lives, and it just wasn't going to work. He took the rejection relatively well, I think, but I didn't see him again until I was literally walking out of town. He stopped me at the edge of town, gave me the tightest hug I think I've ever gotten, told me to be safe, and that he hoped our paths would cross again one day."
"Your breakdown leads me to think your paths definitely met up again," Floyd interrupted once more, earning another tea slurp from John.
"Yes, they did. A few years later I was back up in the mountains. I'd planned on hanging out with the classical trolls for a while, but after a week or so I found myself getting pretty bored of Symphonyville. Nothing against the classical trolls, but it turns out it's just not my thing. So, I went trekking through the mountains to find the yodelers again. If nothing else, they knew how to throw a great party. Speaking of which, the trolls I'd managed to convince to let me borrow a room from that time were hosting a party the night after I'd shown up, and they invited me to go." He let out a little laugh, his gaze far away as he relived the memories, "It was a birthday party for one of the trolls in town. It was his twenty-first, and I guess for the yodelers that's a big deal. A kind of coming of age, uh, age."
John paused to glance up at Floyd, who gave him an encouraging little nod.
"So, I went. Turned out that it was Hickory's birthday, but I didn't run into him at the party until a few hours in. To make a long story that you don't want to hear short, he cornered me at the party, alluded to the fact that he wasn't too young for me anymore, and…well, y'know."
Floyd cringed, wrinkling his nose at John. "Thank you for sparing me the details."
"You're welcome," John snorted, sitting back in his chair while swirling the remains of his tea around in his cup. He let out a puff of air after a moment, downing the tea and smacking the cup onto the table, making Floyd wince. "I stayed in the village that time for well over a year. Hickory and I were happy. And I thought…Well, I thought things were going really well. I'd even started making plans to permanently move there. It was going to be a surprise for Hickory. I'd been looking to have a house built, and was talking to a couple of trolls about where the best spot in the village would be to build it. But then…then Hickory's brother came back to town."
Floyd reached across the table to take John's hand, which had begun to tremble around his tea cup.
"Dickory came back to town and it's like Hickory's entire personality completely changed. He suddenly barely had any time to spend with me, and when he did, he started acting aloof to me. I confronted him about it, and he apologized and told me that his brother just stressed him out. I took him at face value about that, and it was okay again for a couple of days. But, then he just ghosted me for almost a week. I had no idea where he was, and everyone in town either told me it wasn't something I should worry about and that he'd be back soon, or just brushed me off completely. When I was starting to panic, he just suddenly showed up again." He paused, squeezing Floyd's fingers gently as fresh tears welled in his eyes. "When he did show up, he told me I didn't need to worry about where he'd been. And then, he told me that he had to leave with his brother to work, and he didn't know if or when he'd be back. He…he told me that since I was a travelling pop troll I should have plenty of other places I could go, but that he'd had fun while I was in town. That he wanted to find something serious."
John couldn't keep the tears back as he hunched in on himself, barely registering the scraping sound of chair legs against the floor as Floyd got up from the table to pull him into a hug.
"I had though we were serious," John sobbed, hiccupping before confessing quietly, "I loved him, Floyd. So much."
"Oh, John," Floyd cooed, running his fingers through his brothers hair. "He's a bastard who never deserved you."
"N-no," John pushed Floyd away slightly, sniffing as he shook his head, "He was the sweetest troll I'd ever met, Floyd. You don't understand." He gently shifted Floyd to the side so he could stand up and move across the room to a cupboard. He opened the door and pulled a well worn scrap book out, shuffling back to the table to set it down. He gestured for Floyd to open it.
Inside there were pictures of a snowy landscape with quaint little wooden houses, decorated with flowery trim, and trolls Floyd could only assume were the yodelers. The first couple of pages were like this - general photos of what looked like the village John had described, before the photos shifted to a young John Dory with a handful of trolls Floyd didn't recognize, and then to nothing but photos of John and Hickory. Dozens of pages of the two of them looking absolutely smitten with each other, and Floyd was relatively certain it was the happiest he'd ever seen his brother.
Floyd frowned as he looked back up at John. "This doesn't change the fact that he essentially called you a whore before he left you."
"Yeah, I've thought about that a lot," John admitted, his tears having subsided into the occasional sniffle again. He sat back down in his chair. "He wasn't exactly wrong. I've travelled a lot. Before I met him, I'd had a few other short term partners. And after we broke up, I had a couple little flings. It wasn't hard for me to find places to stay when I turned on the ol' boy band charm," he stated bluntly, a wry grin on his face. "I never told him I was planning on moving to the village. As far as he knew, I was liable to up and leave again at any time."
"Yeah, but you'd already been there for a year. He could've talked to you. And he approached you in the first place. That's scummy, no matter how you try and spin it, John."
John Dory simply shrugged, tugging the scrap book over to himself to flip through a few pages. "Maybe. Maybe he just said those things to me because of Dickory. Maybe he realized I just wasn't worth his time." John shut the scrap book, sliding it across the table. "I'll never really know the reason, because I left the village the next day. I didn't say good bye, and I never went back."
"John-"
"No. Floyd, look. All that, in the end, happened well over a decade ago. I can't keep holding a grudge against him for choosing to break it off with me. Even if he was cruel in the way he did it. All I can really do is try to keep my heart from breaking again." John heaved a sigh, slumping against the table top, his cheek squishing against it as he turned his head to look up at Floyd. "It's why I left him up on that hill. I know all I've really done is run away again, but he's going to be leaving with the caravan in a few days. Spending the morning with him, it just brought back all the feelings I had back then. It hurts."
Floyd sighed through his nose, tugging his chair closer to John and settling himself back down. "You still love him, don't you?"
John squeezed his eyes shut, nodding against the table. "I do."
~
"So, if it wasn't a fight, then what was it?" Poppy asked, sitting herself down next to Hickory.
Hickory sniffed, grabbing his hat from where it had been discarded on the ground so he would have something to fidget with. "Gettin' my comeuppance, I s'pose," he said with a shrug. "John and I, I'm sure you could tell, we used to be a thing."
"Hard to miss, with the way you guys were looking at each other half the morning," Poppy nodded, getting herself comfortable as Hickory spoke.
"Yeah…We broke up on pretty bad terms, back then. I…I treated him pretty badly."
"What?! How?"
Hickory laughed gently, rubbing at one of his eyes, "You really want to hear the whole story?"
"Uh, duh! Tell me everything," Poppy enthused, sitting forward eagerly.
"All right," Hickory sighed, a small smile on his face at Poppy's never ending enthusiasm. "John'll tell you that we met when I was seventeen, but that's not entirely true."
"Ooooh, I can already tell this is gonna be good," Poppy cooed, resting her cheek on her fist.
"When I was about ten, a pop troll came to the village that me n' my brother grew up in. It was kinda rare to see travellin' trolls, and honestly no one had seen a pop troll since before I'd hatched-"
"Because of the Bergens," Poppy helpfully interrupted.
"Because of the Bergens," Hickory agreed, patting her knee, "So here was a traveler all the way up in the mountains, where few trolls ventured, and a pop troll t'boot? He was an enigma." He wiggled his fingers through the air, making Poppy giggle. "My ten year old brain was immediately obsessed. I wanted t'know where he was from, how he found us, where he was going next - everythin'. But Dickory didn't like that. He didn't trust the traveler and made me stay inside near the entire time he was in the village. Then a couple weeks passed, and he was gone."
"So, I mean, you really didn't technically meet until later," Poppy hummed, frowning lightly.
"True. But I thought about him endlessly after that. It made me realize there was more to the world than our little village. That I could leave," Hickory enthused, gesturing out towards the bustling town below the hill. "It opened up my whole world when he came to town." He paused, letting his hands fall back into his lap. "But I was stuck under Dickory's thumb. At least, that was until he started workin' as a bounty hunter. I dunno when or how he found out about the line o' work, but he started disappearin' for long periods of time an' leavin' me with random folks 'round town. Eventually, when I was seventeen, he left me with this real sweet older couple, who occasionally had the rare troll that passed through the mountains stay with 'em. Low an' behold, one day I'm mindin' my business puttin' dishes away, when none other than John Dory walks through the door. I nearly dropped the dish I'd been holdin', but I managed to keep it together enough t'ask 'im if he wanted me t'show him 'round the village after he'd rested up. He took me up on the offer, an' we spent a good couple months together."
"Awww! That's so sweet," Poppy cooed, grinning at Hickory.
"Yeah. Real sweet up until I told 'im I had a crush on 'im," he said, smiling crookedly as Poppy's smile fell, "He let me down real sweet like, explainin' that he was headed out of town soon, an' that I was just too young for 'im. Which, valid points. I was still heart broken, though, an' avoided 'im after that. I even nearly missed my chance to say good bye to 'im. But I'd given his rejection some good thought, an' he was right. I was too young, an' he was a drifter. I was gonna be sad for a while, but I treasured the time we'd gotten to spend together. So I said my good byes, and he went on his way."
"But I thought you said you broke up with him?"
"I did," Hickory nodded, turning his gaze out towards the village, "John came back to the village a few years later, right on time for my twenty-first birthday. He appeared at my birthday party like some sorta specter. I turned 'round an' he was just standin' there, sippin' at a drink against a wall, just watchin' everyone else havin' fun. I thought for a minute that I had t'be dreamin', but no. He was really there. An' it was my birthday, so I took a bit of a risk." He tipped his head to smirk at Poppy, "Took 'im home with me that night."
"Oh!" Poppy flushed, waving a hand at Hickory, "You scoundrel."
Hickory laughed, shrugging as he pulled his knees up and sat forward to rest his elbows on them. "I guess so. But John, he just…he makes me feel things I never thought I'd feel, y'know?"
Poppy smiled warmly at Hickory. "Yeah, I do."
"Cause o' Branch?"
Poppy giggled, flushing as she covered her face with her hands, muttering a muffled, "Yeah."
"You two're real cute," Hickory hummed, patting her on the knee. "But, anyhow…John an' I were real happy for a good bit o' time. I think he stayed with us for a year or so? Dickory'd been gone on some long ass hunt an' I honestly wasn't sure if he was ever gonna come back. I know it makes me sound terrible, but I'd kinda hoped that he never would. John an' I were happy." A bitter frown turned Hickory's lips, and Poppy dropped her hands into her lap, watching him curiously. "He suddenly came back into town one day, makin' me spend all this time with 'im as he talked my ear off about bounty huntin'. It put me in a right foul mood, which carried over when I finally did get to spend time with John. I felt right bad when he called me out on my shit, too. I didn't realize I was treatin' him different 'cause of my bad mood. I tried to straighten up an' get back to our usual routine, but Dickory was havin' none of it. One day, he pulled me aside an' told me that since I was of age now I shouldn't be foolin' 'round with some travellin' tart. I needed to get out an' work, an' if I wanted to see more o' the world so badly then he would take me with 'im on his next job." Hickory sighed and rolled his shoulders, stretching back out to lean back on his hands. "He got a little rough with me at one point when I told 'im I wanted t'stay with John, an' that we were happy the way we were. He dragged me into town to show me where John was talkin' to some o' the other villagers, then pinned me down so I couldn't get away, just so he could tell me about how John was apparently lookin' to build us a home. I asked him how he thought that would make me wanna leave, an' he just laughed at me an' told me that if I really loved John because of how he was free to go anywhere he wanted, an' be whoever he wanted, then why was I so willing to tie him down and force him to stay in our little village. Never occured to me that John and I could leave together. I just watched him laughin' with the other villagers an' kept playin' scenarios in my head about how he'd grow to resent me for keepin' 'im there."
"Oh, Hickory," Poppy hiccupped, tears welled up in her eyes, "that's awful!"
"Yeah. But it wasn't as bad as what I did to John after that."
"Oh no! What'd you do?"
Hickory let out a breath, looking ashamed of himself. "I left with Dickory for a week without tellin' 'im anythin'. Dickory took me out on a short job, an' when I got back John was in a tizzy. He was so worried about me, I felt awful. But Dickory told me he had a longer job lined up for us, an' we would be leavin' the next day. I had no idea how long it'd take, an' I didn't even know if Dickory an' I would even go back to the village after. So, I had to set John free."
"Hickory…what did you do?"
"I was cold to 'im. Told 'im I was leavin', an' didn't know if I'd even be back. Then - oh Poppy," Hickory rubbed at his face, "I told him since he was a travellin' pop troll, he shouldn't have any trouble findin' a place to shack up an' keep warm. That we'd had our fun, but I needed to get movin' an' find somethin' 'serious'. I was just awful to 'im. I really don't blame him for leavin' like he did just now."
Poppy looked devastated for a moment, before jumping up to her feet. "So, you need to apologize!" She stared down at Hickory with determination, her fists clenched in the air in front of her.
"Wait-what? Poppy, weren't you listenin'?"
"Of course I was! But, Hickory, for all that is trolly, you've loved John Dory since you were ten. And not even because he was in a band! Now that you're both in a good place in your lives, and able to make amends, you can't seriously tell me you're okay with just moving on with the caravan and leaving things the way they are, are you?!"
Hickory swallowed thickly, fiddling with his hat for a moment, before yanking it onto his head and smacking the ground. "Good gosh golly, you're right, miss Poppy. I can't give up now. I gotta apologize an' clear the air between us. I can't just let things fester like I did before. We gotta stop this cycle of one of us leavin' the other over an' over." He stood, face full of determination. "Let's do this."
"That's the spirit!" Poppy cheered. "And I have the perfect plan to help!"
~
"So, what're you going to do?" Floyd asked, the two had migrated from the table to John's couch, cuddled together under a blanket.
"I don't know…I could probably hide in Branch's bunker until they leave. That's always an option, right?"
Floyd rolled his eyes, flicking John Dory in the ear, earning himself a pathetic sounding whine from the other. "No. As much as I think that what Hickory did was absolutely deplorable, you're probably right that he did it because of his brother. And you still care about him. He obviously still has feelings for you. You two should at least talk, if nothing else."
John sighed heavily, pulling his goggles off his head to toss them across the room. "You know I'm no good at talking. Plus, I'm pretty sure after running off like I did, he probably doesn't even want to talk to me again."
"You just talked to me. I think you did really well. And if Hickory doesn't want to talk to you again, at least you can say you tried. Trying and being honest are the only ways you're going to find yourself any closure about this." Floyd gently ruffled his older brothers hair, "But maybe wait until tomorrow? After you've had some time to rest up. I don't think I've ever seen you cry so much. You must be tired."
John snorted and shoved Floyd lightly, shooting him a playful glare. "This coming from mister I used to cry when even so much as a slightly raised voice was in my general vicinity."
"Exactly why I know how tiring crying can be," Floyd snarked back, tugging at John's ear. "Don't be petulant. Get some rest. Hang out in Rhonda for the rest of the day. I'll bring by some dinner later and we can talk some more, okay? Maybe you can show me some other scrap books you've got stashed away. I saw a bunch more in that cupboard."
"Yeah, okay. That sounds good."
"I'll see you later, JD."
~
The next day started pretty similarly to how the previous had. The sun was shining and birds were chirping, but this time John didn't have an exuberant pop queen banging at his door.
John rolled out of bed and puttered around Rhonda, getting himself ready for the day. As he pulled his goggles on he stared at himself in the mirror. He'd slept relatively well, so the perpetual bags under his eyes weren't quite so prominent, and the redness in them from crying had, luckily, completely cleared up overnight. He hadn't picked out anything special to wear, just his usual fur lined vest and cargo shorts. Pretty well the same thing he'd been wearing the day before. He didn't think he looked like anything particularly special, but yesterday Hickory had looked at him like he was the whole universe.
"Hey now, stop that," he scolded his reflection as his cheeks began to darken. "Don't get your hopes up, and don't expect anything. You're just going to talk, and if we end up at least staying friends, that's good enough." He poked the glass in front of him with a stern frown. "Be happy if you even get closure."
He then turned on his heel and headed out of Rhonda, startling when he found Floyd just outside the door with his fist raised to knock.
"Oh! You're up," Floyd laughed, stepping back to gesture at Poppy and Branch who were standing just behind him, "Branch was convinced you'd still be asleep."
"What? And miss out on a party thrown by none other than the Queen of Pop herself? I don't think so," John laughed, trundling down Rhonda's steps and giving her a fond pat before stepping away.
"Oh, good. I was a bit worried that after yesterday, you wouldn't want to come," Poppy sighed, laughing nervously as she glanced at Branch who nudged her in the side. John raised an eyebrow at their antics and glanced at Floyd who simply shrugged.
"Riiiight…Well, I'm up and about. Shall we?" John swept his arm out towards the entrance to Rhonda's clearing, waiting until Branch and Poppy began to walk before following next to Floyd.
"Are you actually okay?" Floyd asked as he and John fell back a bit from Poppy and Branch, a light frown on his face.
"I don't know," John reluctantly admitted, rubbing at his neck, "I guess? I think I know what I want to say to him, but that all depends on if he's even around or wants to talk to me. I guess I'm a bit anxious?"
"It's okay to be anxious. And if you need me, you know I'll be there for you," Floyd offered, patting John on the shoulder.
"Yeah. Thanks, bro," John smiled, nodding a little as the group of four broached what most of the village fondly referred to as the 'Party Clearing'. The area was almost exclusively used for parties and events, and was currently decorated in country themed decorations for the visiting caravan. Fake cacti were peppered around the area, while what appeared to be hay bales were scattered around for trolls to sit on. A stage and DJ booth were set up at one end of the clearing, and twinkle lights were strung over the entire clearing with various colors of streamers hanging from them. John was sure they'd be amazing once night fell and the lights were turned on.
"Okay! I gotta go do some last minute prep, and make sure all of the tables for food are set up properly. Everything today has got to be perfect," Poppy cheered as she dashed away, the brothers visibly cringing as she said the word 'perfect'.
"So, wait…why're we here so early?" John asked, frowning a bit as he looked around to see a handful of trolls milling about and setting things up.
"Because Poppy likes to be early," Branch stated bluntly, folding his arms over his chest, "And she wanted to make sure you showed up."
"What? Why?"
Branch glanced at his brother, shrugging a little. "Because reasons," he replied unhelpfully before wandering away, leaving an incredibly confused John and Floyd in his wake.
"Uh," John blinked, turning to Floyd with a frown, "Do you know what's up with him?"
"Not a clue," Floyd shrugged while shaking his head, only to turn towards the stage as someone tapped on a microphone and started a sound check. He blinked in surprise and grabbed at John Dory to face the stage as well, as a green and orange troll walked forward with a guitar in hand.
"Hickory?" John gasped, dumbfounded as to why the county troll would be up on stage, especially when there were barely any trolls in the clearing yet.
"Howdy, y'all," Hickory said into the mic, tipping his hat and clearing his throat. "This, uhm…this ain't really for the party or nothin', but I heard grand gestures are real in right now, so uhm, here I am."
John began to walk across the clearing towards the stage in a bit of a daze, watching Hickory as he nervously fiddled with his guitar.
"This is for, well," Hickory laughed lightly, his eyes trained on John as he approached, "It's for you, darlin'." And with that, he began to sing. "Tell me what I have to do tonight, 'cause I'd do anything to make it right…" ((click here if you wanna listen to the song Hickory sings, and the namesake of this fic))
John was enraptured as Hickory sang, unconsciously clutching at the front of his vest as tears welled up in his eyes as the song came to a close. "Hickory," he sobbed with a hiccup, rushing the stage as Hickory jumped down, catching the country troll in a hug. A small smattering of cheering and clapping made John pull back and look around, flushing as he realized that all of the trolls that had previously been milling about were watching them.
"Oh, this is embarrassing," John muttered, burying his face in Hickory's shoulder, causing the other to chuckle.
"Why don't we go somewhere a bit more private so we can talk? How's that sound?" Hickory asked, nudging John's temple with his nose.
"Yeah, okay," John muttered, pulling away to drag Hickory from the clearing by his wrist, the cheers following them as they left.
After a beat, Branch walked back over to Floyd with a self satisfied smirk on his face.
"You and Poppy planned this whole thing, didn't you?" Floyd asked, raising an eyebrow at his baby brother.
"Well, Poppy did. She just used me as a sounding board and asked how I thought John might react to something like this." He shrugged, stuffing his hands into his vest pockets.
"Good job, Bitty B."
"Someone's gotta look out for that idiot now and then. Glitter knows, he won't ever take care of himself."
"He's trying," Floyd sighed, wrapping an arm around Branch's shoulders to pull him into a half hug.
"I know."
~
John tugged Hickory along until they were a good ways away from the party clearing, quite near to the forest trails they'd walked along the day before. He finally let go of the other and spun on his heel to face him, his cheeks flushed and a mix of determination and fear on his face. Hickory frowned lightly, reaching out to cup John's cheek.
"You okay there, darlin'?"
John let out a shuddery breath, leaning in to Hickory's touch for a moment, before wrapping his fingers around the country trolls wrist and pulling it away from his face. "You hurt me, Hick. No amount of sweet ballad performances are going to change that," he began, holding fast as Hickory turned his face away and tried to tug his wrist free, "BUT. But…I am willing to talk about this and clear the air between us. I think we really need to discuss what happened all those years ago."
"Yer right. 'Course, yer right," Hickory nodded, "I wasn't tryin' to avoid a serious conversation with ya, I promise. I know I gotta explain myself, an' you don't owe me any sorta forgiveness."
"No one said I was unwilling to forgive you, sweetheart," John said, returning Hickory's earlier gesture and tilting the country trolls face towards him, brushing his thumb over his cheek. Hickory's face lit up as he stared intently at John. "We just really gotta clear away the old baggage, first."
"Right," Hickory nodded as the two moved to sit beneath one of the towering trees. "Where do ya want me to start?"
"I don't think we need to go that far back. Just…tell me what happened when Dickory came back to town. Where did you go for that week, and what made you decide to try and make me hate you before you left."
Hickory fidgeted, swallowing thickly as he tucked his hands between his knees. "Okay. Well, when Dickory came back an' saw the two o' us together, he was not pleased. The reason I kept bein' so waspish to ya was because he was bound an' determined to make me miserable before he knew I was gonna meet up with ya. An' then he dragged me on a job with 'im without any warnin'. I didn't get a chance to even think about tellin' ya where I was goin', cause I just woke up one mornin' in a wagon that was headin' down the mountain. When we did return, he got real nasty with me when I tried to go back home to ya. I wasn't thinkin' straight, an' he put this thought in my head that I was keepin' you trapped, instead of letting ya be yerself. He told me you were lookin' to move to the village, permanent like, an' I didn't want that fer you. You were always meant t'be free."
"…That's stupid."
Hickory let out a bark of laughter, tilting his head to smile wryly at John. "I realize that now. But at the time, Dick had me all messed up an' I thought the only thing I could do was let you go. Well…force ya t'leave. It wasn't fair, what I did, an' it weren't right. I know that now. I've known that fer a long time now, actually. I should've just talked to ya about it. I've imagined, so many times, how we could've just up an' left in the middle of the night an' been happy and together for all these years. I wasted so much of our time, bein' stupid."
"Yeah. You did," John breathed, watching as Hickory winced, "But there's not much we can do about the past, is there?"
Hickory lifted his head, watching John with hope in his eyes. John couldn't help but reach out and brush his fingers through Hickory's hair, relishing in how the country troll practically melted into his touch.
"If there's one thing I've been trying to learn and come to terms with myself, it's that the past will leave scars behind, whether you meant to hurt yourself and others, or not. But, you can work to help heal them. It'll take time and effort, but I think it'll be worth it if we try."
Tears slid unbidden down Hickory's cheeks, even as he smiled warmly at John. "Lookit you, gettin' so wise in yer old age."
"Shut up," John laughed, shoving lightly at Hickory's shoulder, only to tug him back in close to plant a kiss on his cheek. Hickory chuckled, quickly tipping his head to catch John in a proper kiss, a shiver running up his spine at the surprised little noise the teal troll let out.
"You wanna head back to the party now?" Hickory asked as they pulled away from each other, John taking the opportunity to duck down and snuggle into Hickory's chest.
"Not yet," he sighed, letting his eyes drift shut as he curled around Hickory, "Let's just stay here for a bit."
"Whatever you'd like, darlin'," Hickory hummed, letting his fingers comb through John's hair as they basked in each others company and the warm sun shining down on them.

What about some lulu headcannons since you seem to like her? :)
Tumblr media
oh anon u are spoiling me.... heres a little sketch of her college life. let me begin . . tw for general creepypasta things, abuse, bullying, death, etc
ok. so a lot lulus og stuff is gross obviously (although a majority of the og creepypastas have gross origins/creators). as a kid, i was pretty attached to her, but looking back , its just. ugghhghgh. which is why i want to try giving her her own horror type story while still following some of the core things that made her her. BEGONE WITH MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL KILLERS...
lulu is 24 but described as 'physically 14' which bugs me esp bc theres so much emphasis on her body being like an adult. and frankly i am not crazy about yet another 'little kid bullied/abused then goes crazy/demonic' story so i scrapped the bullshit ‘is 24 but looks 14 but is drawn like she’s 24!’. So I decided to just to make make her whole zalgo poisoning occur later in life. since its now set in university, a handful of things changed. mayhaps she knows jack ?
she grew up as a rich girl being put through several private schools growing up. she wasnt the smartest, she wasnt the most social, and while i think that the og story did this really fucking poorly, she did deal with harassment cuz she developed early. ranged from people calling her a slut for the same clothes as a thinner girl, to getting dress coded for no good reason, to rumors, etc. so, she's being bullied by her peers, though its moreso a ton of gossip rather than stuff in her og. overall school sucked for her
finally she goes to university. shes away from all those people, away from her helicopter parents, away from dress codes and loneliness. she tries SO hard to keep up the perfect daughter persona in public bc she knows shes walking on thin ice(having been punished for things out of her control all her life), with a wardrobe full of pencil skirts and button ups, but then she finally meets this guy named josh. but that shit gets seriously exhausting. and as many kids in her position do, she wants to Rebel .. she starts going to parties and whatnot w her edgy ass roommate. random garage shows, raves, generally reckless behavior etc. its not her fully her thing but she's there and having fun.
idk his name in the og story but there was that guy that led her on just to further abuse her. i changed him up and made him some guy in a frat that she met at a rando party. he was so sweet to her the first time they met, they talked for a long time at the party, he was cool overall and she never ever craved attention like this before - she never even GOT attention like this before, coming from an all girls school, so she clung. but he wasnt actually gonna date her, so he said some bullshit excuse about 'you know how greek life is, my frat wont let me date u unless u join this specific sorority!! soz' and he chose the worst, most clique-y sorority that has the most insane hazing ritual for girls that arent sought after. he thought there was no way she'd give it a shot and he could get her off his back. a dick move, but he didnt think she'd do it.
but, she does - and the hazing is fucking shit. the girls in the sorority are worse than the girls in highschool (and maybe in cliché fashion, one of her highschool bullies ended up in the sorority before her?). it starts off as things like 'oh you gotta buy your sorority sisters coffee for a week' to 'oh you have to be drunk/high throughout all your classes for a week' to completely deranged shit like branding yourself or slashing a professors tires. things nobody in their right mind would do, typically.
i havent decided exactly how exactly lulu hits the point where they think she's dead, but a group of sorority girls think she is. they panic, and in their panic cannot feel her pulse or hear breathing. she's completely unconscious, cold, and frankly on the way to death - so they take her to slenders forest and get to work
they bury her in a shallow grave, unaware of all the different demons residing in the forest watching one of the most gruesome displays of humanity. if youve watched girl from nowhere, theres a scene where nano gets buried alive by a group of her classmates then she wakes up . . imagine that.
im thinking, similar to the operator, zalgo can infect people as well . . maybe people on their death beds ? anyway, lulu's infected. long after the girls run off, lulu manages to dig herself out of the grave. shes wheezing, coughing, sobbing, its dark and cold and foggy, and she now has to come face to face with zalgo making some weird 'i saved you, i want something in return.' and there goes her eyes !!! rip lulu. maybe zalgo did it cuz hes a dick, maybe he actually needs human parts to seal the deal.
theres some more interaction but overall lulu doesnt have a ton of demon powers or anything. new wounds heal quickly, but her past ones will never will. she can be eerily quiet, popping in and out with fog, doesn't need food/water/sleep. . she does have kinda crazy strength(no agility or speed), but she's so mentally weak it does nothing for her
for a while she does just wander the forest in complete and utter mourning, until one of the proxies finds her and is like Oh Fuck that's not human. toby describes her as a zombie. so she's another job for them to handle
eventually they settle her in the hospital with ann.. the hospital is likely an area that experiences more fog, being closer to the lake perhaps, so it just makes sense to put her in an area she can see. it took a while for lulu to calm down bc she now has a pretty big fear around women , and the proxies have to CONSTANTLY come around and check in for a while, cuz she feels safer with them. maybe they tried putting her with jack but jack said absolutely the fuck not. bc lulus legitmately scary. she's constantly croaking, crying, wheezing, dripping blood everywhere she goes, etc.
she eventually gets along with ann, who thinks lulus cute and fun to chat with. i made a joke about them doing tiktok dances together but like. i could see it. maybe ann reminds lulu of her roommate, the only girl whos been completely nice to her ? dunno. (despite the roomie being the reason lulu got into the partying and stuff)
mmmmmm yeah. that is basically the entire rewrite .
i likely wont include her too much in the story just because the rewrite is so drastic+shes not all too popular but i used to feel very fondly towards her when i was 10 and i do think her character cconcept is super cool (the fog, the eye stuff, zalgo poisoning etc). theres just hella weird stuff but its a creepypasta from 2013 idk what we expect

My dear half bloods, I have a theory...
Hi, there's something that's been bugging me since the other day, when I watched the fifth episode of pjo...
Spoilers from here (and a bit of mythology)
When Ares said that he didn't like his children... Okay, I know, I know the gods in this series aren't known for paying child support, but... I think Ares case could be more heartbroken than what we can think at first.
I want to start giving a bit of context in WHY I think there's something really sad behind his words and acts. First, let's talk a bit about mythology...
Ares cares about his children... In his own way.
I'll put a couple of quick examples (just mention something and move back to my point). Ares in Greek mythology it's known for many things and one that I found interesting was that he march in battle with his sons by his side: Phobos and Deimos (fun fact 1 these two are the personification of Panic and Fear, fun fact 2 they are also sons of Aphrodite... Fun fact 3, yes, they are the little "demons" that were the minions of Hades in the Disney movie.) Ares is also known for what happened to his daughter Alcippe, who was 🍇 by a son of Poseidon and Ares didn't took it too well... So he send that son of Poseidon to visit Hades... He unsubscribed that man from the world of the living with his spear... Ares was judged acussed by Poseidon of murder, but the goddesses voted in favor of Ares. (anyway, I invite anyone who is interested in ancient Greek mythology and culture to look up and read about women's rights in Sparta vs Athens, you might be surprised) Now, my point is that he might say that he doesn't like his kids but...
...I mean... he gave Clarisse the spear because he recognized her value as a warrior. It may sound stupid, but I think it was his way of saying that he was proud of her (and maybe he said that to her when he gave the spear to Clarisse, we don't know). What, it's clear, is the fact that she cherished that spear as if he really put all his love in it and said to her "this is my weapon, make me proud"
But why and how does he goes from "I fight with my children by my side in battle" and "don't you f*cking touch my daughter" to "I hate children, even my own"?
And here's when it gets sad, I think he has lose so many of his children in battle, dying too young, that he distance himself from them on purpose to not get too attached.
We've seen, pretty well portrayed in the show, how Ares children are more reckless in battle than Athena's (it's an example because they both are deities of war) so it's more than possible that if those children are in a quest or a battle, they decide to go face to face with the big baddie just to make Ares proud or to prove themselves they are strong enough to be warriors, children of Ares... And if they survived and get older, they are the most likely to end up joining the army... aaand that exposes them to die in battle even when the monsters aren't a problem anymore.
And that's why, I think, Ares had try to detached himself from his children, because he knows demigods don't live long and even if they got to be adults, he knows his children, and probably he knows they'll become soldiers to feel the battle and feel him closer even when they already have earned a peaceful life.
And that is why I think it's sad, because he probably is so proud of them...but also, he is probably so worried about them, that he had to decide if letting himself be vulnerable and care openly for his children or bottle up all his father instincts and detach himself from his children so nobody can weaponize them against him.
Aaaaaand now I'm sad...

Another request idea! I was listening to What a Time To Be Alive by Fall Out Boy and the line "But, baby, please, I just need someone to hold me Even though you don't even know me" struck me as a particularly good steddie prompt. Maybe some hurt/comfort? Thanks for even reading this request!
Full disclosure: I never got really into FOB. I mean obviously love their classics. Anything that was on the radio I liked it just fine. But I did have to go listen and look up the lyrics for this one because just that line had me going feral with an idea. I've read a few fics where Steve and Eddie meet at a party, which honestly makes a lot of sense canonically. Eddie has the goods, parties need the goods, Steve threw a lot of parties. This is a slightly different take on that premise. It's a LOT of hurt, and a LOT of comfort. Steve is kind of pitiful actually, and I love that for him. Eddie's super into it too. Also tagged it light dom/sub because of nonsexual type things that happen while Eddie is comforting Steve. To me, since they didn't have a discussion about it and aren't in a relationship, it could just be seen as one dude kind of being a little pushy when taking care of another dude, but that tag doesn't exist so here we are. I hope this gets posted in time for you to cry in the school pick up line! - Mickala ❤️
---------------------------------------------------------
Steve should not have come to this party. Tommy always threw a huge one at the end of the year, right when his parents left for their anniversary vacation, and Steve always came.
But this year was the first year he hadn’t been invited by Tommy.
He really hadn’t been invited at all, but it was just common knowledge that it was happening here and now, so here he was.
No more crown, hanging onto his sanity by a thread, and his only friends were barely 13 years old.
Being a wallflower was a new thing for him.
He watches from the corner of the kitchen, sees the people he used to call friends getting drunk, getting high, dancing. It doesn’t seem fun anymore.
He’s glad that’s not him anymore.
So why does he feel like crying?
He holds it in, takes small sips of his beer, focusing on the bitter taste. He didn’t even like beer. Just drank it to maintain the King of Keg Stands crown
As the night drags on, it sinks in that he just doesn’t fit in this world anymore. It wasn’t made for him, he wasn’t made for it.
He didn’t really fit anywhere.
He choked back a sob, rushing out the back door of the house and down to the pond that Tommy and his dad fished out of.
No one ever went out here, too worried about bugs or snakes, but Steve couldn’t find it in himself to care right now.
His legs gave out when he reached the dock, his body sinking down to the wood below him as he felt tears fall down his face.
It wasn’t a panic attack, he’d had plenty of those, made it through plenty of them on his own. This was just sadness.
He was alone out here, not even the noise of the party to keep him company.
He was alone everywhere, really.
Sure, he had the kids. But they were kids. They hung out with him because he protected them, not because they thought of him as a friend.
His parents hadn’t been home in nearly six months, hadn’t called in two, didn’t even seem interested in the fact that he was graduating high school.
Nancy didn’t give him the time of day, nor should she after everything that happened.
The friends he grew up with, the friends he thought would be there for him, ended up being terrible.
“Shit, Harrington? Is that you?”
Steve sniffed.
He couldn’t be found like this, his reputation would suffer even more, somehow.
He wiped his eyes quickly, hoping that it was dark enough the other person wouldn’t see the movement.
“Uh, yep,” Steve managed to say after a deep breath, surprised that his voice didn’t sound as wrecked as he felt.
He turned around and saw Eddie Munson walking up the dock.
Everyone knew Eddie only got invited to these parties because he sold weed. Eddie himself only came to the parties because he knew he could make a killing just for showing up for an hour or two.
The only times he’d ever spoken to Eddie were to make sure he showed up for his own parties, offering him a tip of $20 just to come well-stocked.
He always came, never accepted the tip, and usually left a rolled joint in Steve’s room at the end of the party.
He didn’t think he did that for everyone, but he was too scared that it would stop if he asked.
“What are you doing out here?”
“Just felt like fishing,” Steve responded, slapping his hand against his face as soon as he said it.
“With your bare hands in the dark?” Eddie snorted. “I will give you free weed for a year if you can manage to do that right now.”
Steve cracked a small smile.
“Make it free weed for life and I may consider hopping in and giving it a try.”
Eddie’s laugh filled the night, loud and full of life. Something Steve needed to hear.
But Eddie sobered quickly, watching as Steve looked down at his lap.
“Needed a break from the party?”
“Guess so.”
“It didn’t seem like you were doing much in there.”
Steve just shrugged, not sure how to explain without crying again.
But apparently Eddie wasn’t going to let him get away with that.
“Heard about you and Nancy, man. Sorry it didn’t work out,” Eddie said, nudging his shoulder with his hand.
He was really close, close enough for Steve to feel the warmth radiating from his body. It was that awkward time between spring and summer, and the night was warm, but it still felt nice.
He hadn’t had someone so close to him on purpose in a long time. Maybe if he scooted an inch to the left, he would brush against Eddie’s hand just right and-
“Shit, you’re crying again,” Eddie said.
His hand was suddenly on Steve’s shoulder, and Steve shivered at the contact.
He closed his eyes and realized that, yes, he was crying again.
Dammit.
Warm, strong arms were wrapping around him, pulling him tight against an equally warm, strong chest.
He let out a sob, his chest hurting with the effort it took to hold in as much noise as he could.
A hand was in his hair, fingers carefully running through the length of it.
“It’s alright, sweetheart. Let it out. I got ya,” Eddie was saying quietly against the top of his head, his breath sending shivers down Steve’s spine.
Steve couldn’t catch his breath. The way Eddie was holding him, talking to him, caring for him, it was more than he’d ever really had.
He knew he’d never see or talk to Eddie again, so why not embarrass himself?
“Match my breaths, Stevie,” Eddie calmly tried getting him to calm down.
And he could if he tried, he knew he could. He wasn’t having a panic attack, just a breakdown he’d been meaning to have for a year now. He needed to get it out.
“Look at me.”
Eddie’s tone was different now, deeper and difficult to ignore.
Steve looked at him, eyes wide, wet with tears still falling. His nose was running, he could feel it starting to drip, but Eddie was holding him tightly, and he couldn’t move his hands to try to wipe his face at all.
“Good boy.”
Steve shivered again. He blamed it on a chill in the air, but he knew that they both knew there was no chill in the air.
The air was humid, a rainstorm expected the next day keeping the environment around them stale and still.
“You can cry as much as you want, but you have to breathe. Understand?”
Steve nodded, taking in a shaky breath.
“Better,” Eddie smiled, his face still showing concern, but relaxing when Steve started taking more frequent, slow breaths.
He felt less tears gather and fall the more breaths he took, his eyes never leaving Eddie’s smiling face.
“Doing better, sweetheart?”
Steve nodded, but he still felt the lingering loneliness, knew that when Eddie left him, he’d be back to square one.
“What’s got you so upset, huh?”
Steve shrugged, letting his head rest on Eddie’s shoulder.
“Did someone hurt you?”
What a loaded fucking question that was.
Yeah, a lot of people hurt Steve, for as long as he could remember, emotionally and physically.
But he wasn’t about to spill his guts to Eddie, even if he was being nice. He didn’t know the guy enough to start talking about his abandonment issues.
Eddie’s hands were running along his back, soft and then harder, soft again, then settled in his lower back.
His hands were big, bigger than Steve’s even, and his fingers were long. His splayed out hands covered all of Steve’s lower back area.
He felt covered, protected.
He didn’t want to get up.
“Steve, if someone hurt you, you need to tell someone. It doesn’t have to be me, but maybe your parents or the counselor.”
“Can’t tell my parents if they’re the ones who hurt me,” Steve spoke before realizing what he was saying.
It hit him so suddenly, he started to pull away, a small whimper leaving his body without his consent.
But Eddie wasn’t letting him go, tightened his arms around him and shushed him gently.
“Hey, stay with me. We don’t have to talk about it, let me just hold you a bit more.”
Steve gave in. He couldn’t understand why, or how, or what was running through his mind. He just knew the way Eddie was holding him made him feel whole for maybe the first time in his life.
He chased that feeling, sinking further into Eddie’s chest and letting the man rock him back and forth slowly.
Thinking went out the window as one of Eddie’s hands slowly brushed through his hair, then a finger slowly traced along his hairline, down his jaw, over his lips.
The whimper he let out now had nothing to do with being upset.
“Okay, sweetheart?”
“Why are you being nice to me?”
Eddie’s fingers froze, but only for a moment. Steve knew he’d never outright bullied Eddie, had probably been nicer to him than most of his friends had, but it didn’t change the fact that he’d never been particularly kind either.
His finger moved back along his lip, then up along his nose, then to his forehead. It was like he was trying to commit everything to memory, soaking every moment of this up because he didn’t think he’d have it again.
And maybe he wouldn’t.
But Steve wanted this to happen again when he wasn’t having a mental breakdown in Tommy’s backyard.
“Because sometimes there’s a lot more to people than what everyone sees and I think I see you a lot better than most people do. I don’t need you to explain anything to know you’re hurting and you don’t deserve to be.”
He said it like it was simple, like it made all the sense in the world for him to comfort him.
Maybe to him it did.
“But I was an asshole.”
“You were. But it doesn’t take a genius to see you aren’t anymore.”
“How do you know that?”
Eddie was quiet for a minute, his fingers moving back to Steve’s hair and tugging gently so he had to pull away from his chest and look at him.
“The old Steve would have never even given me a chance to help. He also wouldn’t have been standing by the wall for a party like this or escaping to a secluded area to cry. The old Steve wouldn’t be looking at me like you are right now.”
“How am I looking at you?”
“Like you want me to kiss you,” Eddie smiled.
He said it easily. Like saying it wouldn’t have made most other guys punch him immediately.
“And if I do?”
“You’ll have to ask nicely. You may be a changed man, but I do deserve some manners.”
Steve smiled at him, his charm replacing any lingering sadness.
“Oh? So if I were to lean in and kiss you that would be rude? I need to say please?”
Even in the dark, Steve could see Eddie blushing.
“I’m not stopping you,” Eddie finally said, voice strong despite the redness of his cheeks.
“So if I said please, you’d kiss me?” Steve asked as he inched closer, his breath hot against Eddie’s lips.
“If you said please, I’d do anything you wanted,” Eddie gasped out.
“Please kiss me,” Steve breathed out, his lips gently grazing against Eddie’s.
Eddie pushed forward the final centimeters, his lips warm and wet against Steve’s.
They both groaned into the kiss, Eddie’s hands cupping Steve’s jaw to keep him there.
Steve moved so he could straddle Eddie’s lap, his hands resting on Eddie’s shoulders as he finally gained the higher ground.
He realized quickly he didn’t want it, not with Eddie.
He let out a whimper and Eddie pulled away for a moment, but only to smirk and nudge him back.
“This dock isn’t gonna collapse under us, is it?”
“Don’t know,” Steve supplied as he settled on his back, Eddie hovering over him.
“Guess we’ll have to find out.”
Eddie’s lips were back on his, demanding, but slow.
Minutes passed, maybe hours.
Steve felt safer than he ever had, here under Eddie, with every possibility that someone could find them eventually and not giving a shit about it.
Eddie would keep him safe.
He didn’t know Eddie well, but he knew that much.
No one who helped a known asshole when he was having a breakdown at a party would just leave him to be beat up for kissing a dude.
The way Eddie touched him, rough hands fluttering over any place his skin was visible, lips and tongue making new patterns against his own, it felt like Steve was being cherished, appreciated, loved.
If this was all he ever got, if this is all he ever felt and tasted of Eddie, he thinks it would be enough.
Or it wouldn’t and he would never feel like this again.
“You’re thinking too loud, sweetheart,” Eddie mumbled against his lips.
“Just feels good,” Steve added, placing another kiss against his lips.
He could feel the shift, the way Eddie was slowing down, pulling away inch by inch.
It wasn’t enough.
Steve whimpered.
“Sh. It’s okay, Stevie. We’re just pausing for now,” Eddie moved back, kissing his forehead before there was too much space between them.
He heard voices in the distance, a reminder that the party was still happening and possibly wrapping up.
“Did you drive here?”
“I walked.”
“You walked?”
Eddie sounded upset.
“I’m only a street away. Not a long walk.”
“I’ll drive you back to yours. Walking this late after so many idiots have been drinking and plan to drive is dangerous.”
Steve rolled his eyes.
“I’m not a damsel in distress or whatever they’re called.”
“Ah, but you are. Crying alone outside in the dark, waiting for a big, strong man to come save you? My chariot awaits!” Eddie was helping him stand as he spoke, then bowed and gestured towards the road where his van must have been parked.
Steve couldn’t help the laugh he let out.
Yeah, maybe he was a damsel in distress. Maybe he would let Eddie rescue him.
Maybe he didn’t have to be so lonely, at least for tonight.

hi! can we have some headcannons about what a relationship with each of the proxies would be like :)
Yes ofc! Note, in my au the main "proxies" are Tim, Brian and Toby!<3
Relationship HC's With The Proxies||Proxies x Reader Headcanon's
Tumblr media
Tim Wright -Be prepared to smell like smoke. You will smell like smoke no matter how hard you try. -Lots of Johnny Cash, John Lennon, Bon Jovi, ect. -HE HAS A KISS THE COOK APRON. DON'T TRY TO FIGHT ME ON THIS, YOU WILL NOT WIN. -Tim need's minimum two hours alone after a mission, no matter how long it was. He takes that time to recuperate away from you for your safety, in case he dissociates and Masky fronts.(In my au he has DID.) -Tim love's when you wear his clothes, it's cute to him. -Tim has a soft spot for kids, like a big soft spot. He want's one of his own one day, with you. -He prefers if you don't interact with the creeps(assuming your a civilian) to protect yourself and the others from harm. -Rant's to you about Toby, a lot. -"Hey sunshine." "Oh, of course love." Just a mushy guy. -Probably love's morning kisses. Like any chance he gets, his arms are around you giving you a kiss on the cheek. -When Tim has schizophrenic episodes, I beg of you to make sure you're there for him and to reassure him. Be yourself and try to make what he's going through as comfortable as possible and don't treat him any different unless you think he need's help. Ask to touch him, incase he might be paranoid and want to run. Comfort is key. -Tim loves cooking, homie will cook you a four course meal if you asked tbh.
Brian Thomas -He love's it when your curious -Oh you had a weird phase? He's had weirder. -Brian is your therapist tbh... -Right after a mission, be prepared to take a long, hot shower together. Also be prepared to probably watch a horror movie right after. -"Hey I know your busy right now but could we go get a bite to eat? I'm hungry." "Go by yourself, Brian. Your a big boy." "Fuck you."
