April Wrap Up ✨
I have my iPad back, I can get back to books I really really really wanted to read, but I had a hard time picking up some books bc I was too focused on fanfics (I blame Ben Barnes). As always, spoiler alert just in case.
1. Circe - 5/5
LISTEN I AM A CHANGED WOMAN. I HAVE NEVER FELT THE FEELINGS I FELT IN THIS BOOK. My heart broke and restored at the same time, I was sadly happy, happily sad. Like... I felt my heart physically rip with the last chapter. Madeline Miller is already the owner of my wallet, I will pre-order everything she writes and I will cry when the time is right. I think I liked this more than The Song of Achilles...
2. As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow - 5/5
I was halfway through the book and I cried 4 times... FOUR TIMES AND THE BOOK WASN'T OVER. The plottwist made it a 5 star immediately. I remember thinking "this better not happen" and BAM! my world changed. The romance was just so innocent and beautiful, and then you had the most terrible things happen 2 lines later and you came back to reality. It makes you think of the world and what really matters. And the book is so hopeful. I love it.
3. The Six Deaths of the Saint - 4/5
The only reason it is not a 5 star is because I NEEDED MORE. Bro this was so beautifully written. I usually can't stand 2nd person POVs, but in this book it had a purpose that left me SHOOK. The way the violence and war was written here was beautiful. I need more.
4. The Year of the Witching - 4/5
A friend told me to read it. I loved it. I was shooketh by it, and I want more. Bring Lilith to ANY book and I will read it. Ezra is literally the bestest man I have ever read?? Let me marry him?? I was kind of expecting a non-happy ending, but then we wouldn't have a sequel. ALSO *spoiler* I would have let everyone die and join the witches with the condition that Ezra stayed alive.
5. The Midnight Library - 3.5/5
Ngl, I read this because of BTS, but last time I did that I found one of my favourite books so I had to read it. It made me understand the song Zero O'clock better. As for the book itself, it has an interesting concept, but it made me have mini existential crisis? Which I didn't like?? It did feel like a help book but I was not the target audience for it, it was good, but it is not the way I see life.

Do you have any scene of BAMF Magnus in lbaf IV?? Like Magnus just straight up killing or threatening someone?? Can you please share it??
There is this one scene which came in my head, while i was thinking about TLND (yk,as one does on a normal Monday afternoon). So, imagine, TLND gang i.e the LBs, the HFs, the LLs, plus Maryse, Anjali, Shinyun, Ben all end up in the tsc universe. This is sometime before TDA starts but after TMI ends. So, tmi gang are in very early twenties.(Don't ask me how or why they end up there). So, we know that Magnus is the warlock representative on the council. So, basically a politician. And the TLND gang ends up in a council meeting and they don't know that the Magnus of this universe is a politician. And they had expected something related to Fashion in occupation for Magnus. So, they're in a council meeting, and they see Magnus the politician™. And he's grilling some asshole ignorant shadowhunter about being racist and, being all over badass, and the TLND gang is shooketh, like their Magnus does not like confrontation, but this Magnus is just metaphorically ripping apart the shadowhunter. So, they're all awed (and a certain someone is maybe a little horny 😏) you can complete this in your own way. My mind did not move forward with this idea.
A little fan fiction idea which came to my mind. ( I'm really dumping all my ideas here) enjoy:
(but i don't think you will, bcoz this is gonna be shitty)
Magnus could think of nothing else other than the man in front of him. Alec was beautiful. There were certainly many other words he could use to describe him, mich better words, which would do justice to his beauty. His raven hair, his high cheekbones, which could honestly cut through anything. "They're the famous Lightwood cheekbones. You can use them to slice through glass." He remembers Isabelle saying. Then, his lips. Oh, he could write poetry about those lips. Those gorgeous, lush pink lips. And of course, his eyes. Those beautiful eyes. He could drown in those sapphire orbs.
"Magnus?" Alec's voice broke him out of his admiring spree. Alec was seated on the kitchen counter. Wearing a blue t-shirt, which should be illegal for the way it looked on him. "Are you going to stare at me all day?" Alec questioned with a smirk. "Well, you're my boyfriend, and you're gorgeous, so, I honestly, don't see any reason not to".
"Mmhmmm, so I'm just gorgeous, huh?" Alec's legs wrapped around his waist and Magnus found himself being pulled forward, and so close to Alec that he could feel his breath on his face. Not there was much distance between them before.
"Yep. You're just gorgeous" Magnus replied. "And, what should I do, to make my status go from gorgeous to utterly and totally handsome, second most gorgeous person in the world"? Alec asked in a husky voice which made Magnus shiver.
"Second most gorgeous? Who's the first?"
"You. Obviously. But you didnt answer my question. What do i have to do? "
"A kiss might be a good place to start"
"Okay. One kiss coming right up"
And then Alec was kissing him, and every though flew out of his mind. It was all Alec. Alec's lips on his. Alec's hands on his body. Alec's legs around his waist. His mind was only full of one thing. Alec. Alec. Alec.
Some kisses were warm and gentle. This was pure fire. Alec bit his lip and then his tongue was caressing his lips. Magnus got closer, deepening the kiss. Not wanting to break away. Not wanting to let go of Alec. Ever. Then, he felt calloused hands lifting his shirt, caressing his back, taking the shirt off. And then, Magnus pulled away.
"What's wrong? Alec's lips were sinfully red and just a bit swollen. His eyes were blown wide. The black of his iris was so prominent, the blue was just a thin line. " Magnus? What happened? "
"Nothing. It's just, you were injured because of the demon, and i don't want you to exert yourself. And, you don't have to kiss me, just because you think i want it. You should rest. It's okay if you don't want to."
Alec's hand closed around his wrist and he pulls Magnus's hand down, and places it there.
Oh.
𝙊𝙝.
"You have no idea what I want, Magnus." Alec speaks in his ear. "And for the record, I'll always want you. All the time. Everywhere."
That is all it takes for his self control to shatter. He surges forward, and then they're kissing, and Alec is taking off his shirt. And Alec is kissing his neck and Magnus is in a state of Euphoria. When, all the clothes are gone, and they're on the bed after having done some things which would make the Catholics have a aneurysm and Magnus is with his head on Alec's chest, Alec says,
"So,Mr.Bane,is that enough for you to pull up my rank from just gorgeous? "
And Magnus has never felt more happy
The end
Idk what the fuck this was. Anyways, bye
First of all shut up i am obsessed with you what?
ALSO AHHHH YOUR WRITING IS AMAZING. I LOVE???? It's so soft and cute and nice and just THEM.
Also "i'll always want you. all the time. everywhere" MR LIGHTWOOD SIR CAN YOU NOT???
i also liked the TINNNNNNNY sliver of angst where magnus worries about alec's physical safety and you can see the insecurity trying to crawl its way up but alec shut that shit down like the sexy man he is
keep doing god's good work and write more stuff about the only two important men in the world thanks.
I LOVED YOUR SCENE ABOUT TLND GANG TRAVELLING TO SHADOW WORLD. THE CHAOS??? We already know Alec loves when Magnus goes feral and all authoritative. It would be a sight to behold oml. I will try to write this if inspiration strikes me. But thank you so much for the fun idea!!
As for LBAF IF FUCK YEAH WE HAVE BAMF MAGNUS.
As I previously mentioned, LBAF is completely unhinged. We see all the characters just going insane and doing batshit stuff and magnus is not immune to it. i can think of very specific scenes where magnus does some super sexy power babe stuff. but alas, spoilers, my love.
there is this scene between magnus and leviathan that i just loooove, here is a tinnnnny snippet:
"You have always been so ignorant, Magnus," the prince of hell tutted. "Ignorant of your power. Ignorant of my son's potential-"
Magnus didn't mean to laugh. But a loud bark of laughter escaped him. "What did you just call him?"
The prince of hell blinked at him lazily, as if he couldn't be bothered to repeat himself.
Magnus leaned forward. "He is my son."
"In name perhaps," Leviathan shrugged.
"And in who he is. There is more of me in my son than you will ever know," Magnus pointed out. "As Max would say, why don't you fuck around and find out?"

hello!! for the fanfic writer asks, would you be interested in answering:
10. Is there a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?
13. How much planning do you do before writing?
27: Is there a fic you were nervous to post/share? Why?
29: Share a bit from a fic you'll never post OR from a scene that was cut from an already posted fic. (If you don't have either, just share a random fic idea you have that you don't plan on getting to.)
you don't have to answer all of these! or you can! for any fandom! thank you!! ♥️
Hi! Oooh, those are some nice ones.
10. The Thick of UNIT! It's crossover crackfic, with a crossover crackship, that I thought was going to just be mostly me clowning on a throwaway line, but it's gotten fic written of it...? And at least one person uses an OC name as a tumblr username...? I'm shooketh. Plus I want to finish it one day, but each time I open the file I'm smacked with writer's block. (I'm also attempting a beta-reader on it, but idk when that'll be able to pan through at this point.)
13. All of it and none of it. I'm one of those assholes that can just sort of write without much planning if anything (if it's any consolation, it helped lead to shit grades in English class for composition), but sometimes I acknowledge that my memory is ADD-riddled shit so I do write some stuff down if a thing gets big enough. This reminds me that I need to continue what I sunk last summer into planning ahahahaha orz it's taunting me.
27. Nervous...? I don't know if that's the right word for it...? I mean, I've been writing fic for so long that I don't recall being specifically nervous. Maybe the closest would be Lackluster (FFN/AO3), if only because I might get judged for writing a rarepair I've literally never seen before in my life. Law and Viola? Sure, why the fck not. My that admission, Love, Loss, and Finding One's Self on the High Seas can qualify because I also do a weird rarepair in that one too for, like, half a second (Zoro/Reiju, baybee).
29. So, I've got this dynamic fic I've got a bunch of wips and one-shots and story ideas in and sometimes it's where I plop a whole-ass multichapter fic in there, and this is the beginning of one that's on the chopping block for next time I save the new document, because it's been literal years since I added to it. Six-hundred-three words of a probably Doctor Who fic under the cut.
Bill looked at the scrap of yellowed paper in her hand, the pencil used to scribble on it had long faded to a light grey. The cool breeze teased her giant poof of hair and made her jacket dance around her; country air always made her feel uneasy. In the city she could smell things on the breeze—food, cars, people, places—yet out in the country, on the lonely dirt road in front of the low stone-and-moss wall that guarded a stone-and-moss house, she smelled nothing of the sort. It was all animal poo, if there was anything, and she hated it. Adjusting the bag on her shoulder, she took a deep breath to steady her nerves, hoping what she smelled was not simply more poo of a viler sort. She wasn’t entirely certain about this… but then again, what could she do? Where could she go? She had run out of options—this had to be it. There wasn’t anything else that she could possibly… bloody hell. She tried to push open the gate and the lock froze on her, barring her entry. Pocketing the paper with the address, she attempted to simply hop over the wall instead, but it was too thick for her specific height to make a smooth go of it. Her legs went just a bit too far and she cringed, knowing she was going to feel that in the morning. Biscuit-tin, that’s what this place was, she decided as she finally made it over the wall. It looked like a crofter’s plot on a biscuit tin one would find in a Sainsbury near Christmas. Then again, what else did she expect going to the Middle of Glen Nowhere, in the foothills of Ben Nothing? A lot of bloody bunk. As she made her way closer to the house, a flock of brown, horned sheep came round the back of the building and began to swarm her. They didn’t try to do anything—that wasn’t it at all—but they still surrounded her and prevented the stranger from approaching the door, bleating hopefully as they greeted their visitor. It was then that the sound of a small airplane began to rumble through the air, attempting to be heard over the wind and sheep. A tiny dot in the sky high above the horizon to start, Bill watched as the plane flew closer, almost going and clipping the roof of the house when it passed overhead on its first go over the property. She watched the sheep as they all moved as one towards the plane; their field became a runway and—after the craft stopped—it was surrounded by the beasts. The engine died down and two people climbed out, one tall and lanky, the other much shorter though much more average in build. They seemed to notice her right away, as they began walking towards her, the flock following. “We’re not buying anything, I hope you know,” the shorter one said as they approached. She was a woman with brown hair, a northern English accent, and was a few years older than her; the taller one was a man with grey hair and a couple extra decades. While they were both pale, he somehow looked as though he hadn’t properly seen sun in ages, which was believable given the amount of layers he was wearing. “I’m not selling,” Bill replied. “I was just cleaning out my mother’s lockbox, and…” “I don’t see why that has anything to do with us,” the man said. Bill was hit hard by the Glasgow in his voice—shit. Oh… shit…

WE FUCKING MADE IT Y’ALL
this essay, “Of Spinoffs and Spinning Off” by Louisa Stein, is a published academic work that mentions cambionverse by name as part of a 700-page book about fandom studies!? HOLY SHIT??!? this was published in 2018 but it took the sheer chaotic SPN-returns energy of 2020 for us to stumble across it. astounding. love this for us
(quick aside to caveat that of course we were not the inventors of the Team Free Will 2.0 concept, it was already well-established before our first fic posted in 2011, and “Cambionverse” as a name is pretty specific to our fic series and not something people use for all fandom content that happens to feature Ben/Jesse/Claire. BUT STILL, shoutout to literally anyone who has made fanwork of our verse over the past ten years because YOU’RE FAMOUS NOW TOO)
(second aside to say “it is also entirely possible that the creators of the eventual canon version of Claire drew inspiration from the prior fan authored versions of teenage Claire.” U DON’T SAY)

Text from the screencaps below:
“To my mind, there is no better example to demonstrate the politics of the “official” spinoff in conversation with energies and labors of fan spinning off than the longrunning fanbeloved TV series Supernatural, and so for the rest of this chapter I will use Supernatural as my case study. I do not mean to suggest that the spinning off that occurs by the hands of Supernatural fans is necessarily different in quality or significance than that of other series, fans, and fandoms, past and present. Rather I turn to Supernatural because its now 12year run offers a wealth of snapshots of different modes of industrial and fan spinning off, and the relationships and tensions between the two.
[...]
Spinning Off to a Better Text: The Cambionverse
Also in Textual Poachers, Henry Jenkins talked about how fan authorship (often) emerged from dissatisfaction as much as from enthusiasm on the part of fans. Elsewhere I have argued that fan works can be seen as critique as well as supplement in that they point to holes, to misrepresentations, to gaps, to things left wanting (Stein forthcoming). Some fan spinoff verses—like the Endverse—seem to cumulatively build on the source text, giving us more of what the text offered, and thus do not seem to be oppositional to the source text. But even such works that follow clear markers in the source text can be read as critique. Fan authorship of “Down to Agincourt” and other Endverse works function as critique as they voice fan desires for different narratives and themes, along the lines of: “We want more Endverse; We want darker tales that blur morality further; we want a darker version of Dean, a continued depiction of Sam and Lucifer, a more extended stay with drug and sex fixated Castiel.”
At the same time, spinoff verses can find their origin in critique driven by fan desire to fix some of the consistent perceived failings of the source text. For Supernatural, this means that fans envision and author spinoffs that feature female characters, people of color, and queer characters (and characters who merge these identity markers) who dont get killed. For example, in between season eight and nine, fans envisioned a version of Supernatural that centered on powerful female “big bad” Abaddon, rather than relegating her to marginal, doomed, and finally unimportant figure. At around the same time, fans authored the first stories in what they termed Cambionverse, also referred to as “Team Free Will 2.0.” The Cambionverse envisioned the next generation of hunters, comprised of characters who had (then) only been featured in single episodes. One of these characters at the center of this fan envisioned spinoff was Claire Novak, daughter of Jimmy Novak, whose body the angel Castiel possessed. Like the Endverse, Claire Novak had offered story and character potential that the Supernatural series seemed to overlook but that resonated with fans. Thus, as fans continued to write stories featuring Claire together with other oneoff characters Jesse Turner and Ben Braeden, these stories to a certain degree served as critique of Supernatural’s poor story choices and flawed ideologies of representation.
Fans spin critique into new work with all the transmedia tools and then some that they deploy for the televisual source. Cambionverse creators create fic, GIF sets, vids, art, meta, and fanmixes (musical playlists created and shared on interfaces like 8Tracks and Tumblr, http://8tracks.com/explore/cambionverse/popular/1). This active transmedia spread positions Cambionverse as an expansive multimedia universe in its own right with the fic at the center, but as was the case with “Down to Agincourt,” there is arguably more collaborative feedback with less purposefully clear policing of the lines drawn between “official” and “unofficial” authorship. The Cambionverse spreads across multiple platforms deployed by fans, including An Archive of Our Own, Tumblr, and 8Tracks, spun by multiple authors in multiple forms. Thus, the Cambionverse demonstrates how transmedia authorship and the multiplicitous transmedia landscape further destabilize traditional notions of authorial control.
[...]
Fan literacies extend beyond close textual analysis of the series to knowledge about the politics and potential of Supernatural’s future production, to a larger production literacy regarding the creation of spinoffs, as we have seen in fan coordination and campaigns for the Supernatural spinoff Wayward Daughters. Arguably, the concept for Wayward Daughters emerged from the same fan impulse that birthed the Cambionverse: the desire to tell the stories of characters with strong potential who were underused or introduced in an episode, and who were left underdeveloped yet with strong narrative potential. In response to these rich narrative gaps, fans told Claire Novak’s story through to her teenage years. They wrote various versions of Claire’s narrative in the years between her character’s first (one episode long) introduction in Supernatural’s fourth season and her eventual return six years later in the series’ tenth season. By the time the official Supernatural writers cast Claire as a teenager and brought her to the screen, fandom had already fleshed out her character and narrative. Supernatural actor Kathryn Newton came to fill a character already fleshed out in the fan imagination, in GIF sets, vids, featuring actors from other media fancast to serve the character of Claire, and drawn and painted by fan imagination in lines inspired by these fan castings and by individual interpretation. Both fans and the Supernatural producers were working with the same source and question: what would Claire Novak as we saw her in season four be like as a teenager, given her physical qualities and personal trajectory? Thus, perhaps it is not surprising that the teenage Claire Novak of eventual Supernatural “canon” looked quite a bit like the fan imagined Claire, blonde but sullen, a rebellious teenager with an angelic chip on her shoulder (and in the world of Supernatural, the descriptor angelic is not a compliment ...). Of course, given the visibility of fan work and the knowledge of fandom displayed by Supernatural producers, it is also entirely possible that the creators of the eventual “canon” version of Claire drew inspiration from the prior fan authored versions of teenage Claire.”
Louisa Stein is Associate Professor of Film & Media Culture at Middlebury College, Vermont, USA. Her work on gender and generation in media culture and transmedia authorship has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. She is a book review editor for Cinema Journal and the Journal of Transformative Works and Cultures. She is coeditor of the collections Teen Television (McFarland, 2008) and Sherlock and Transmedia Fandom (McFarland, 2012).
