thank you for asking number one fuckable city easily chicago (lake micchy trains bean MUST I say more). number two fuckable city paris BUT she does have herpes and you WILL contract it. number three fuckable city leipzig (not technically fuckable you must make love to her but it will be worth it)

number one UNfuckable city is endless suburban purgatory with ten blocks of what vaguely passes for a real downtown (st. louis). number two unfuckable city is london (obvious)

I never smoke cigarettes

but for the occasional one

in Paris or Santorini or Berlin

or now with a Berliner

originally from Georgia

(the country)

lighting up with matches

after a rooftop bar in my city

with much-too-spicy margaritas

showing her around the Mission

to the best al pastor tacos

to my favorite little wine bar

and other Americans tell us

they can’t stand the smell of smoke

so we blow it the other way

giggle and roll our eyes

as we sip our darts

befriend two architects

asking for a light

one from Bushwick

(but originally Kansas)

the other from Munich

and we gather around the flames

exhaling into the night

sharing stories of our cities

and the various party scenes

but how we’d rather be gardening

than raving late into the early morning

and one cigarette leads to a second

and to another bar with a patio

and I borrow their lighter

(I guess they had one this whole time)

and we slip into easy conversation

the way you do with people

who have lived a little bit everywhere

except we can’t smoke there either

so we chug our beers and spill

out onto the sidewalk

past the food carts sizzling

past the closed shops and graffiti walls

to the 16th Street Bart station

hugging goodbyes to the guys

I don’t even know the names of

and gushing so much love

for this new darling friend of mine

I’d made just four days ago

stranded in the Frankfurt airport

both headed to SF from Berlin

how easy it is to connect in times of chaos

when we can laugh about it together

and now parting ways saying see you later

like we’ve got forever to meet again

and again in whatever city we might be in.
