It surprises most people when Lance tells them that the first person he came out to as bisexual was his abuela. He somewhat understands that shock; the stereotype of the homophobic Catholic grandmother is hard to shake for people. Yet, he knew she would always love him and was only a little afraid—the same amount of fear you have when coming out to anybody. And yeah, at first she was a touch confused, thinking there were only two sexualities, straight or gay, but he patiently and enthusiastically explained to her the broad spectrum of being queer once he received the initial warm response. The rest of the family came easily after that.

His abuela was also the first person he told when he had a new crush. A scowly, long haired boy at the Garrison who Lance couldn’t quite take his eyes off of, even if he hadn’t actually talked to the guy yet. His abuela commandeered the tablet from the rest of the family to video chat with him in private. She was one of the only ones in his family who would genuinely listen to him ramble on about all his crushes. He loves her for that.

So it’s not odd that when Lance gets back to Earth the first time, he immediately brings Keith to meet her. She adores Keith—though not as much as Lance does; no one will ever love Keith more than Lance. Despite her being late into her eighties, her mind remains sharp. Sharp enough to, unfortunately for Lance, match Keith to her memories of Lance going on and on and on about a boy at the Garrison. Much to Keith’s delight, as he laughs at Lance. Lance has never been happier.

And in a few years, maybe sooner, probably, definitely sooner, his abuela will be the first one to know when he plans on proposing to Keith.
