Do you have any favourite headcanons about Nightshade?
(I feel like them being autistic is a pretty common headcanon, so I’m curious if you have any thoughts on that as well)
YEAYEYWYEYYSUSY OH MY GOD YES WE HAVE SO MANY HEADCANONS ABT THEM !!!!! get ready for a fuckn infodump (also sosoos many of these are just us projecting)
warning: i sound like an insane person
okay so YES !!! nightshade is absolutely autistic. and they are stimming constantly. they stim vocally a lot, and a lot of the time its just bird sounds, but sometimes it'll just start screaming lmao. it also likes to rock back and forth a lot!! definitely a verrrry common one.
Also if youve seen how we draw nightshade you might've noticed that we draw xem with little wings in root mode! they also flap those to stim :]
also they love slime!!! this is verry much just me projecting but i like to think xey love slime and they have a huge collection of textures <33 its favorite is bingsu!!!
and NEOPRONOUNS as you might've noticed :P. (we have a nightshade alter that uses neos so we are once again, projecting) but anyway, it was hashtag that told nightshade about neos, and they immediately got into it!! they have many and love hoarding them <3 some of xeir favorites are it/xe/that/owl/web/bot/mur
bones!!! vulture culture!!!!! they collect bones. sometimes theyll go out into the forest and search for bones for hours (it has soooo many antlers) and if web finds a dead animal, web'll take it back with them to clean it out webselves :]
They also have intrusive thoughts. yeah less fun headcanon time. they can be very vivid and very graphic, and its caused nightshade to have panic attacks a few times. i hc that bumblebee also used to have them, so bees helped xem through some of the bad ones <3
also xey have severe emetophobia. yeah i know, a bit of a weird one. if someones sick, they will be avoiding that person like the plague. whenever it watches a movie with the family, it'll always check if there are emeto scenes so it knows when to look away or leave (shout out to doesthedogdie.com i fucking love that website!!!!)
this post cus i think about it a lot
and general terran hc! i headcanon that all the terrans can eat human food :D although nightshade specifically has a difficult time eating (the tism) and xey'll only eat things like noodles or very processed food. murs a huge ramen lover 😎
MINECRAFT. you cannot look at nightshade and tell me they dont love minecraft!! xey have a survival world going where xeyre completely decked out in netherite, have a hundred redstone machines scattered all over the place, and just so many huge projects going on. mur started a multi player world and got all murs siblings to join. most chaotic world ever
and now im thinking abt owls, so. they have night vision, because of course. and it also sleeps in a nest (terrans can sleep hc jumpscare) its just a pile of a fuck ton of pillows and blankets and if you touch it xey WILL bite you
also it has a very strong prey drive. if they see anything particularly small moving around on the floor they are fucking jumping it. its like xeyre the maltos mouser lmao. no small animal that shows up in the malto home is safe
oh and as for music !!! big fan of the big neurodivergent three lmao. lemon demon, will wood, tally hall. that stuff yknow? (yes im projecting) also heres a playlist that our nightshade alter made that is 100% what we hc source nightshade to listen to !!!!
LOVES STAR TREK !!!! you CANNOT convince me they wouldn’t. big fan of the non-human bridge officers <3 Spock, Data, Saru (and also big Odo fan) webs favorite is probably next gen :] also i 100% percent believe it was Alex that introduced xem to it. i look at alex and see a star trek liker. i will not be taking criticism
oh and now heres a weird one. when nightshade was a protoform, they were always very… squinty? i dunno, its just something we noticed. like why are you squinting baby, can you not see? and then when xey got their altmode, suddenly xeir eyes were much wider! and i like to think that they did actually have bad eyesight as a protoform! and becoming an owl greatly improved it :]
also they cant see glass in their alt mode <3 hashtag has a compilation of mur crashing into windows
and about the episode "missed connection", we aren't actually told how long nightshade was helping tarantulas, and while most interpret it as just one day, i like to think it actually took about a week at least or even longer. i dont really know why i hc this, but maybe its cus i need nightshade and tarantulas to be besties or i'll die
okay thats it for now <3 i definitely have more headcanons so i might make a second post abt em later

WIP Wednesday: Katabasis
Tagged by the lovely @thana-topsy @gilgamish this week, and in recent weeks past by @saltymaplesyrup and @dirty-bosmer
I'm not tagging anyone because I'm coming up on 2 WEEKS without power or internet after a severe storm, so there's no way to guarantee I'll see anyone's posts since navigating tumblr on my phone is a nightmare. :(
Fandom: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Rating: T (blood and violence) Category: Gen Genre(s): Action/Adventure Main characters: Khemor gro-Skaven (Male orc LDB), Calder, Gregor
Summary: A series of fics detailing how Khemor went from a senior magus in the College of Whispers to becoming the Last Dragonborn, Thane of Windhelm and the Pale, confidant of Ulfric Stormcloak and traitor to the Empire.
The broad square sail filled with wind as the Sea Hawk turned towards the ocean. When the first wave caused the bow to lift and then drop, Calder quickly sat next to Khemor and stuck his fingers under one of the ropes that secured the canvas-wrapped crate to the bulkhead.
“Up oars! Ice to port!”
At Revna’s shout, the men at the oars pushed down and held, lifting the blades as one from the water, and Torden leaned on the tiller, the rushing of water around the steering-oar increasing in volume as the ship changed heading.
Calder risked a glance over the topstrake. Submerged chunks of ice floated by, milky blue in the dark water. There was a hollow thump and a shudder ran through the hull, but Captain Torden did not seem bothered.
Above them the sky was a cloudless, azure bowl where seabirds wheeled and called. Below, the water was dark. Soon the shore was far enough away that the only indication of how quickly Kyne’s wind was carrying them was the bright white ice floes that passed by as the ship cut through the waves. A large horker bull amidst his harem of cows called out a challenge to them, but was soon left behind.
The men continued rowing, the creaks and groans of the oars in the ports blending with the sound of the water churning in their wake.
“We’re out of the ice-belt!” Revna called from her perch in the bow. A sigh of relief went up from the men at the oars, but they continued their slow, steady strokes, looking to Captain Torden.
“Ship oars!” he called, and the long pine shafts were pulled in, lashed to the strakes more quickly than Calder would have thought possible. There was a flurry of activity, shouting, cursing, and finally with several chants of heave-ho the sail was hoisted to its full height.
A great bird of prey was painted on the sail, its wings seeming to flap as the canvas rippled and billowed. The acceleration was immediately apparent, and the deck suddenly tilted as the Sea Hawk heeled against the wind. The cliffs and rocks of the mouth of the White River were small on the horizon: they were truly underway.
After a while, Calder felt he was less liable to tumble off of his perch with every pitch and roll of the deck and he released his grip on the rope to lean back against the upper strake. When Khemor glanced over, Calder was slightly gratified to note that his thane did not seem to find the motion of the ship any more pleasant than he did.
“Are you warm enough, Thane?” Calder said, leaning close to be heard over the sounds of the sea and the thick fur-lined hood that was pulled up over Khemor’s ears.
“I believe I am as warm as it is possible to be, under the circumstances.”
Behind them, Captain Torden let out a loud laugh. “This is as good a spell of weather as we could hope to have, Thane! Kyne is smiling on us!”
“Let her continue to do so,” Khemor responded.
“And look, Stuhn’s wolves have come to see us off!” Torden stretched out an arm, pointing towards the horizon.
A line of black, triangular fins rose from the ocean, and Calder caught a glimpse of shiny dark forms beneath the surface of the water before they disappeared.
The boat suddenly felt very small.
“Bah, they just think we have a net full of herring,” said Helvyn. The first mate finished securing the line holding the beitass to an iron ring set into the deck before standing and shading his red eyes, looking out towards the dark forms in the waves. “Thieving fetchers.”
The line of fins broke the surface again, closer. Before they had fully sunk beneath the waves a second rank of fins followed them, and this time one of the creatures lifted its blunt head out of the water and a plume of vapor rose into the air. A sharp white oval stood out starkly on the side of its face.
Is that an eye? It’s enormous!

um hello!! im very new to comics, but of the characters I’ve seen so far, I really like Barbara and I was just wondering if you had any comic recommendations on where to start..? its very confusing trying to get into it all, but I’d like to be able to hold a conversation about someone I find interesting with my boyfriend so I can hear him info dump on me more cus he’s deep into dc so :)
Hi!!! That is so sweet omg 😭 Welcome to the weird wonderful world of comics!!! and also i’m so sorry for what I’m abt to throw at you lmao
Since you’ve sent this ask into an Oracle-centric blog, I’m gonna keep this rec list Oracle!Babs-centric (& also encourage my fellow mods to add on if they also have some recs!) I actually don’t have a whole lot of recs for Batgirl!Babs anyways, but I’ll be tagging my gen dc blog at the end in case you’d like to talk abt those or any other characters!
Also before I get Into the recs, I wanna give you some words of encouragement: there’s no right or wrong way to read! You’re also likely gonna have some well a lot of confusion at the beginning, esp bc there will be Events™️ that have ramifications™️ and you’re not always given full context of what’s come before or what’s happening concurrently with what you’re reading. I’ve been doing this for awhile and if I’ve learned anything, it’s that the more that you read & explore, the more fun you’ll have & the more things will usually start to make sense! But it’s all gotta start somewhere first! :D and you’ve def chosen a great character to be your launching point!
Im gonna be hopping around a bit in my recs here but I’ll try to keep it mostly in chronological order. That said, first up:
Suicide Squad (1987) - she appeared semi-regularly starting in #23! This was also her debut as Oracle! I really enjoyed the overall run & would normally highly recommend it, but also want to warn that it’s a pretty heavy read in terms of content itself (canon-typical violence ofc esp for a SuiSq comic, discussions of suicide ideation, period typical stereotyping/‘subversion’ of said stereotypes, but that’s a deeper discussion for a different blog) For that reason, I don’t necessarily recommend it for a first-time reader, esp if you’re wanting to solely focus on Babs. Team books usually aren’t super great when you’re reading for an individual character, in my experience, esp in a case like this where the character isn’t always necessarily part of the team or appears sporadically enough to disrupt the flow of following a storyline.
Birds of Prey (1999) - This team book breaks that prev rule tho, bc Babs is the leader & is in Damn near every issue of this run 😂 There’s several smaller team-ups before the main ‘99 run (BoP:Manhunt, BoP:Wolves, etc), which are also good as a prelude before the main run itself. This will be the longest thing that will give you a LOT to parse through & ymmv with a lot of it. (Dixon & Simone are the most prominent writers for it & without getting Into It they each have their Issues™️ & Crimes™️) It also crosses over with a few events/references others. Imo it’s a good window into what comics are like overall, esp when you get into a longer run with multiple writers at the helm. But it has an added bonus of keeping a pretty small cast at its forefront (for about half the run, it’s solely Babs n Dinah!) It also has a follow-up run in 2010 which is broken up by-
Oracle: The Cure - (technically a 3-issue mini-series but!!!) this one’s a culmination of Oracle & Calculator’s (it’s not rivalry? That can’t be the right word… Uhhh, nemesis-sitch?) from BoP & leads right into bringing Babs back to Gotham in Steph’s Batgirl run as well as the next BoP run I mentioned just a sec ago. It’s what I like to call connective (t)issues lol. Ymmv I think depending on if you’ve read BoP ‘99/TT ‘03 beforehand, but I hadn’t read a lot of TT before reading it at the time, and I enjoyed it a lot!
A couple individual issues I wanna suggest:
Batman Chronicles #5 - Oracle: Year One!!!!! Cannot rec this one enough!!! In lieu of reading Killing Joke (which really only serves Bruce, Joker, Jim Gordon’s characters) read this!!! LICHERALLY her origin in coming into her own as Oracle!!! This one is THE place to start, actually, before you read anything start here 😂
Batman: Gotham Knights #6 - okay, this one is admittedly a self-indulgent rec. Without spoiling the plot, it’s CLASSIC soap-opera level shit. The TENSION at play & the layers of Bruce & Babs dynamic, the messiness of the batfam!!! 👌 *chefs kiss* GK as a run in general too was a LOT of fun for me & Babs is a pretty prominent player in much of it, but this issue rlly takes the cake for me ngl
And to tie it all together for an extra couple of Important Event recs that you’ll run into esp if you pick up BoP first:
Batman: No Man’s Land - okay, this event was a Behemoth. It’s a LOT to read, but it is REALLY good imo as a launching point for where Bat-comics were at the start of the millennium. Babs takes the narrative role SO many times throughout & she rlly comes into her own by becoming a linchpin for the info system she builds for the batfam. Again, I don’t wanna discourage you when I say it’s a Long read, bc it’s well worth it imo, but also 100% okay to skip when you’re just starting out! It’s a big time sink!
Batman: Officer Down - okay put away the meme forJUST A SEC, our old friend Jim Gordon’s been shot & it’s up to Batma- oh wait bruce sulks by Jim’s bedside while Babs rallies the troops and GETS SHIT DONE to find who shot her dad? INTERESTING 🧐 In all seriousness tho, & compared to NML, this is a much easier bite-sized event that can give you a taste of what Event/crossoverComics™️ are generally like 👍
Bruce Wayne: Murderer?/Fugitive - okay so, take that same energy of the batfam having to Put In The Work to help Bruce out & flip it around bc now Bruce is the Main Suspect. The drama, the Intrigue™️. Pretty much everyone in the fam gets a moment to shine & this is def peak of how Babs fits into the fam during this era. This one runs a bit on the longer side & babs is again, more of a support role here, but god damn I loved it a lot!
I feel like I’m obligated to at least Mention Batman: War Games, mostly to note that it finally shakes the foundation of Oracle being the batfam’s main support (her CLOCKTOWER gets nerfed in this event 😭) If you read all of BoP and skip over this event & then are confused abt why Babs is suddenly being ejected from Gotham, just remember that her clocktower gets blown up, Steph dies, Bruce n Babs have a falling out & that’s basically why Babs starts flying around the country & settles in Metropolis for a bit instead of going back to Gotham. I reread this event at least once a year bc it gave me brainworms, I can not in good conscience recommend it to anyone bc no one understands her (War Games) like i do 💕 Godspeed if you decide to read it o7
Other recs/mentions:
Batgirl (2000) - okay if you end up reading NML, you’ll be introduced to Cass in it, & this run picks up with her. Babs is in it a LOT at the beginning as supporting cast to Cass (up to War Games ofc, but I won’t say much more abt that lol) I’m ngl, when I was trying to get more into comics, this run was what HOOKED me
Batgirl (2009) - so in a similar vein, Babs also features as a support for Steph too in her batgirl run. It’s… different from Cass’ run, but I also rlly love this one too. And also am forever bitter that the Batgirls run didn’t realize their potential BUT WE’RE NOT GETTING INTO THAT HERE.
Gonna mention Batman: Gotham Knights one more time bc again, while Babs isn’t a main focus, I think it’s rlly good at tying the batfam together during that era & giving a reader glimpses into other characters/dynamics. I think I got more out of it after I had read a few other runs from this time period (namely Robin, Azrael & some prominent stuff with Huntress), but can also see it as a potential launching point for new readers too 👍 if you wanna get more into the batfam/Batman but are intimidated by the Big Runs, this can potentially be a good bridge!
Gonna rapid fire mention that Babs as Oracle has a lot of appearances in Robin (93), Nightwing (96), JLA (96), Azrael (95) and obvsly Batman/Detective Comics from the 90s into 00s. I’ve read a few of these runs, and ymmv depending on how attached you may get to certain characters. But that’s what comics is all about! Getting attached and exploring other characters n teams n stuff!
A Gen note that I wanna end on: I wasn’t exaggerating when I said earlier abt how the more you read the more you’ll have fun. I can’t even begin to count the number of times that I’ve read something from a 90s/00s comic & was essentially jumpscared by a sudden Oracle cameo that I wasn’t expecting! She pops up in so many things throughout the universe at the time!!! She was THE info broker for all the supers!!! It makes me so insane that DC threw that all away to magi-cure her and demote her back to batgirl when she had grown so much 😭
anyways I hope you have fun!!! And again if you’re ever looking for other recs my more Gen dc blog is @dyketectivecomics! If my fellow mods or anyone else have some recs to add or to dispute haha, I’ll be tagging this so others can see/rb/reply to add their recs too 👍
Okay! \o/ that’s all I got for now! Happy reading anon!!!!

Batfamily Next Gen
Rubio Todd | Bloodlust
Rubio is the eldest son of Red Hood (Jason Todd) and Crimson (Vicia Lopez Todd). He has the same Metahuman powers as his mom. He's a fairly recent addition to the next generation Batfamily as no one even knew that Jason and Vicia had a child, let alone got married.
Rubio leads the second iteration of the Outlaws.
Jennifer Montoya-Kane | Batwoman II
Jennifer Montoya-Kane is the daughter of Batwoman (Kate Kane) and Question (Renee Montoya). A tomboy at heart, Jen has always been someone who gets down and dirty. She liked to rough house with her cousins as a kid.
Jen takes up the mantle of Batwoman and joins the Birds of Prey led by Lucy Quinn.
Justin Drake | Night Owl
Justin is Red Robin (Tim Drake) and Bernard Dowd's son. He's more of an inventor than a superhero, choosing to work behind the scenes than be out and about fighting crime. And him losing one of his legs gives him even more reason to want to stay in the background.
Justin's actually the new Oracle after Babs, but decided to give himself a different, more unique codename rather than becoming Oracle II.
Lydia Gordon | Seer
Lydia is the daughter of Oracle (Barbara Gordon) and granddaughter of Commissioner Gordon. She's an informant like her mom, but also is active in crime fighting alongside her cousin Nighthunter (Josie Cain-Brown). Lydia has a cyberpunk theme to her.

Fearsome Five Next Gen AU
I’ve had an DWD AU rattling around in my head for a while where in the future a new Fearsome Five forms with the descendants of the original group. This is a run down of the characters so far (bare with me, some are more developed than others).
MegaByte (Tessa Sputtershock)
Parents: Megavolt and Lexi (biological)
Pronouns: She/They
Sexuality: Bi
Species: Rat/Opossum hybrid
Age: 15
Powers: Inherited Megavolt’s electrical powers, however instead of stealing light bulbs she uses them to hack and manipulate machinery. Also controls an army of electric-powered robotic rats she designed/created herself.
Weaknesses: Much like her father, water is the easiest way to take Tessa down. She is also quite inexperienced with her powers and tends to get over emotional.
Personality: Geeky, scatterbrained, awkward, tech savvy, sensitive, insecure, shy
Appearance: Physically Tessa is more rat-like similar to Megs but has grey fur/white hair like her mother. Quite tall and rather scrawny. Her villain outfit generally consists of a black tank top, yellow combat trousers, purple boots, gloves and goggles. Like Megavolt she wears a battery pack but hers is fashioned after a square battery. Her hair is rather choppy and often worn in a short ponytail.
Random facts:
-Megavolt’s powers were passed down to her, however they didn’t properly manifest until her early teens. She hasn’t quite gotten the hang of controlling them yet.
-She tends to spark randomly whenever experiencing strong emotions
-She’s easily spooked and rather skittish
-Has a sister-like relationship with Quackerjack’s daughter, Harleen.
-She speaks with a mix of British and American slang, often in the same sentence.
-Her main robo-rat companion is named Sebastian (shout out to anyone who gets the reference 😉)
-She has very poor eyesight and needs glasses.
-Has a personal grudge against Quiverwing Quack.
Harley Quack (Harleen Quackson)
Parents: Quackerjack (adopted)
Pronouns: She/Her
Sexuality: Lesbian
Species: Duck
Age: 17 (same age as Gosalyn in this timeline)
Powers: Has no physical powers, but is an exceedingly skilled gymnast. Also very experienced with an array of weapons. The absolute best at disguises. Very convincing actress.
Weaknesses: Her cockiness can lead her to making rash decisions. She also tends to run into situations without a plan.
Personality: Talkative, sassy, fearless, girly, outgoing, energetic
Appearance: Slightly shorter than Tessa. She has a rather muscular build due to being athletic. Her main outfit is similar to Harley Quinn’s gold dungaree outfit in Birds Of Prey, but in a more pastel colour palette. Has split-dyed pastel blue and pink hair.
Random facts:
-Quackerjack’s adopted her when she was seven.
-She’s a very skilled weapon/trap builder, having been taught by Quackerjack from a young age.
-Makes all her own costumes.
-STRONG. Seriously, she could carry the entire fearsome next gen if she wanted to.
-Has an unsettling obsession with horror stories.
-She can be a bit snobby, especially in regards to fashion.
-Good friends with Tessa since they’re a similar age and basically grew up together.
-Has a one-sided crush on QuiverWing Quack and often flirts with her during their encounters.
-She’s really good at pulling off different accents.
-Considers Megavolt her second dad, but refers to him as ‘Mega Mom’ just to wind him up.
Buster Flud
Parents: Bud Flud and an unnamed mother (biological)
Pronouns: He/Him
Sexuality: Unspecified
Species: Canine
Age: 20
Powers: He can con his way out of anything, a very smooth talker, street savvy, great strategist
Weaknesses: Physically he’s not a good fighter, usually choosing to stand back and observe from afar.
Personality: Controlling, persuasive, distrustful, rebellious, bossy.
Appearance: I don’t have a fixed design for him yet, but in contrast to pre-mutated Liquidator’s formal style Buster has a more punky, rock-influenced look.
Random facts:
-He has a very strained relationship with his parents, especially Liquidator.
-Budding musician. He’s been trying to put a band together since he was a teen but no one can put up with his control freak tendencies.
-He’s been conning people ever since he was a kid.
-Has been put in juvy more times than all the other next gen villains combined.
-His parents wanted him to go to business school.
-He comes up with a lot of the group’s plans.
-Absolute compulsive shopper. He can go to the mall without coming home with at least five new band T-shirts.
NegaGos (Goslynnda Mallard)
Parents: NegaDuck and NegaLaunchpad (adopted)
Pronouns: She/Her
Sexuality: AroAce
Species: Duck
Age: 17
Powers: NegaGos’s power lies in her deceptiveness, she looks sweet and innocent but can turn into a nasty psycho in an instant. Tiny but mighty, she can wield weapons with just as much confidence as Negaduck.
Weaknesses: Doesn’t like being called by her full name (only NegaGos is acceptable). She struggles with her morals.
Personality: Manipulative, vicious, deceptive, cold, teasing.
Appearance: Not too different from her cannon design, however obviously older. Her outfit is also full-on creepy pastel goth aesthetic. Think skull hair clips, striped tights, bows, etc.
Random Facts:
-Once Negaduck was gone, Gos went off the deep end. She wanted to do him proud, so became a vicious criminal despite her conflicting feelings.
-She has a soft spot for animals but keeps it a secret from the rest of the gang.
-She’s more diplomatic than Negaduck when it comes to the gang, but can be just as cruel if provoked.
-Wields a chainsaw similar to the one used by Juliet Starling in Lollipop Chainsaw (It was a custom made by Harleen).
-After everything that’s happened she’s come to despise the Negaverse and spends most of her time in the primeverse.
Vinez (Vincent ‘Vinnie’ Bushroot)
Parents: Bushroot (creator)
Pronouns: They/Them
Sexuality: Pan/Ace
Species: Mutant plant duck
Age: Physically only around 2-3 years old, mentally a teenager (being a plant he ages differently)
Powers: Like his creator he has the ability to control plant life, however he specialises more in poisonous plants.
Weaknesses: Weed killer, buzzsaws, fire, basically anything that can kill a plant.
Personality: Quiet, brooding, moody, solitary.
Appearance: Like Buster I don’t have an official design finalised for him yet, but I’m thinking a rather dark colour palette in contrast to Bushroot.
Random facts:
-Created by Bushroot by accident.
-Going through a constant emo phase.
-Very reserved and quiet, but has a sweet, caring personality.
-He uses a lot of dark and self-depreciative humor. The others are rightfully concerned about this.
-Not really that interested in being a criminal, he just does so to fit in with his peer group.
-Has a crush on Tessa (she is unaware).
-Has a nice singing voice.
-Bushroot is a bit of a over-protective helicopter parent, which gets on Vince’s nerves.

Elemental Companion (Animal Companion Archetype)
Tumblr media
Whether it be fire, water, earth, air, or some other exotic element, the four elements, in broad strokes, compose the various matter of the material plane, and with that comes the natural world.
It only makes sense, then, that sometimes a rare animal contains a mote of elemental power within themselves, which a master can coax to full life with their bond and training.
That’s right, it’s time for another companion archetype that hybridizes the companion with another creature type, this time being elementals!
Somewhere between a normal animal and the extraplanar reflections of them that some elementally-aligned summoners can call upon, these companion creatures, be they animal, plant, or vermin, rarely look like they are made out of the element in question. Instead, they may manifest minor traits associated with that element instead. An earthen elk may grow antlers of crystal or stone, a fiery horse might snort smoke, a mountain goat of air might have longer, cloudlike wool that shifts in nonexistent breezes, or a cobra of water might have white patterns on it’s hood reminiscent of brine.
While animals associated with a certain environment may be more likely to possess that element, the fun part of this archetype is that many may defy those assumptions. Regardless, depending on their element, these creatures sport different abilities.
Best of all, unlike similar archetypes, these creatures remain true to their original creature type, and are not harder to train as a result!
Initially, these companions gain a basic elemental ability. Those of air are warded against projectiles by sudden winds, while those of earth are tough and durable. Meanwhile those of fire pierce smoke and flame with their vision, while those of water become faster swimmers and more fluid dodgers.
Later on, they gain a greater elemental manifestation, namely flight for those of air, exotic metal-infused attacks for earth, fiery attacks for fire, and the ability to expel water with their attacks to push foes away for water.
A simple archetype that grants a companion elemental abilities, consider carefully which suits your concept and hot to use the rewards each grants. Air companions will likely favor fly-by attacks, while those of earth will be front-line attackers. Fire will also favor the front lines, especially when they can dodge in and out of fire. Finally, those of water are at their best in aquatic environments, though either way, their ability to control positioning cannot be denied.
Though they are simple creatures, I imagine that the personality of these companions is affected by the nature of their element same as many sapient beings with such ties are. Flighty air-beasts, volatile fiery plants, stoic and stawart giant beetles, and mercurial and confident sea creatures, among other things. They might also have other quirks of behavior if their element differs greatly from their natural habitat.
Named for the divine warrior spirits, garuda eagles have a vibrant coloration not normally seen on birds of prey, and they universally have a strong connection to the air, flying fast and dodging arrows with incredible agility. Being permitted to raise one is already an incredible boon, but rarer still are those who also receive a blessing from an actual garuda, bestowed only upon the most righteous and skilled hunters.
Kugal the goblin is very proud, for he has successfully raised a pet goblin dog who has a literal fire in it’s eyes, one that can be coaxed forth with the right training. However, the problem with being a proud goblin is being a boastful goblin, and there are many in his tribe, the chieftain included, who desire to take the beast from him, leaving him with a dogslicer in his back.
Many dwarven clans feature working beasts who bear the strength of stone in their bodies, mighty beasts of burden that can weather hardship as the mountain does. Such beasts are guarded carefully and bred in the hopes their elemental might will pass to the next generation.

LIGHT OF LIFE 459
John 1:4
DIVINE ORDER 24: BEGINNING OF MARRIAGE 2
Mat 19:4,8 And He answered and said to them, Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning "made them male and female"…He said to them, Because of your hard-heartedness Moses allowed you to put away your wives; but from the beginning it was not so. MKJV
THE MAN; THE WOMAN
Of course we all know that when God said MAN, He was actually talking about the world of MEN.
Every impression about Adam relates to all Men that would follow after him.
For instance, the Good News Version strongly gives the view that “they” referred to all the MEN.
Gen 1:26 Then God said, "And now we will make human beings; THEY will be like us and resemble us. THEY will have power over the fish, the birds, and all animals, domestic and wild, large and small." GNB
But the very next verse now seems to “arrests” that View and rather emphasizes that “they” meant the Man and his Wife.
I perceive, however, that it emphasizes that the 1st MAN amongst the world of MEN will be ADAM, and what makes each MAN complete in Purpose and Functionality is the MAN and his WOMAN.
Gen 1:27 God created HUMANKIND in his own image, in the image of God he created them, MALE AND FEMALE HE CREATED THEM. NET
Another reason why God must have created the MAN separately and first is the need to primarily show that the intrinsic nature of God does not possess the Feminine Parts.
Mat 22:30 When God raises people to life, THEY WON'T MARRY. THEY WILL BE LIKE THE ANGELS IN HEAVEN. CEV
With spirits and Angels, there are no Milk Breasts, buttocks, wombs, hormones and all other features that distinguish Women from Men.
With the New body that we all will resurrect with, it is certain that Men will lose the capacity to produce sperms and the Women will lose all their reproductive organs because no more babies need be born then.
1Co 15:53-4 For WE WILL DISCARD OUR MORTAL “CLOTHES” AND SLIP INTO A BODY THAT IS IMPERISHABLE. What is mortal now will be exchanged for immortality. And WHEN THAT WHICH IS MORTAL PUTS ON IMMORTALITY, AND WHAT NOW DECAYS IS EXCHANGED FOR WHAT WILL NEVER DECAY, then the Scripture will be fulfilled that says: Death is swallowed up by a triumphant victory! TPT
THE WOMAN
Now, if the Women will become just like men then, it means they are intrinsically Men with Female Structures just to “complete” the functionalities of the men for NOW.
In fact, someone said: “WOMAN means WOMBED MAN”.
But the distinguishing features between Men & Women seem so varied.
Is there a reason why?
1Pe 3:7 If you are a husband, you should be thoughtful of your wife. Treat her with honor, BECAUSE SHE ISN'T AS STRONG AS YOU ARE, and she shares with you in the gift of life. Then nothing will stand in the way of your prayers. CEV
Why make the Woman, who has to carry the Babies for 9 months, weaker that the Man?
If she was “made” to Help the Man, why does it seem like it is the other way around – Man helping Woman?
Well, I told my wife that it must be because if the woman was as strong as she is vocal, she will be beating all men senseless.
Two Captains can’t run a Ship.
My wife disagreed partly!
1Pe 3:7 Husbands, in the same way, treat your wives with consideration as the weaker partners and show them honor as fellow heirs of the grace of life. In this way nothing will hinder your prayers. NET
My wife concluded that my “thought” puts the Man with the right to beat up the woman, but the same vs above warns the Man not to use his superior strength to oppress the Woman or else face denial by God.
Now, if we say she’s weaker because of her Hormonal status for childbearing, why are Lionesses the Pride’s hunters 90% of the time?
Job 38:39 "CAN YOU HUNT PREY FOR THE LIONESS and satisfy the hunger of her cubs GW
A woman is strong and wild, especially when she has to protect or fend for her children.
Can you give us reason why she was really made by God to be weaker than the man?
May God help you maximize the essence for which you were created as Man or Woman, IN JESUS NAME.
Come back on Friday, as we proceed in digging into this inspiring Subtopic.

Unexpected Guests in the Hell Class
Unexpected Guests In The Hell Class (The One With The Wings Is The Favorite---Not That Class 1-A Picks Favorites) by Monkeygirl77
Hawks stands before both boys, an expression of playfully mocking seriousness etched over his features, his aviator's coat tied around his waist, hands planted on his hips firmly. “Those who don't meet their obligations don't get mercy nor forgiveness from this Bird of Prey, Kaminari Denki, I only accept absolute perfection from my Cadets. Let this serve as an encouragement to do better next time.”

How BIG is the Klingon Bird of Prey?
First introduced in Star Trek III: The Search For Spock and seen in nearly every iteration of Trek since, the Klingon Bird of Prey is iconic. But how big is she? This is complicated by her appearing at several different sizes throughout the same movie, let alone through the franchise.
Tumblr media
With the classic movie Enterprise (305m)
Tumblr media
With the Next Gen Enterprise (625m) and Romulan B-Type Warbird (1353m)
Tumblr media
Lawrence Miller's 1985 K'tara-class blueprints say she's 168 feet long, which is only 51.2 meters (would not fit whales)
Tumblr media
The official Haynes Klingon Manual (2012) gives her overall length as 456 feet/139 meters (would fit whales)
The Star Trek Encyclopedia tried to account for the various on-screen size discrepancies by saying there were in fact at least two differently sized versions of the Klingon Bird of Prey which were externally identual. The B'rel class was the smaller one, and K'vort class the bigger.
Tumblr media
The Enterprise crew standing on the sinking HMS Bounty, which is so tiny in this shot I'm not sure the bridge would fit inside. Definitely would not fit whales.
The real life reason for the upscale in TNG-era Trek was budget. The model was super detailed and big screen ILM quality, so when they needed a big Klingon ship, they just reused the Bird of Prey model and kept the wings up (which moved a lot in STIII and IV) to make it look slightly different instead of building something else.
Later they could afford to build the Vor'cha Klingon Attack Cruiser model and switched over to that for all "big" Klingon ship needs until "All Good Things" and DS9 had the Neg'var model (which one time grew to like five kilometers in length, but that's another story!)
And maybe I'm massively overthinking a franchise where this bridge in STIII
Tumblr media
Suddenly becomes this bridge in STIV
Tumblr media
With zero explanation🤷‍♂️

Lost Kin | Chapter II | Memory and Dread
Tumblr media
Fandom: Hollow Knight Rating: Mature Characters: Hornet, Pure Vessel/Hollow Knight Category: Gen Content Warnings: infection, reference to torture, dehumanization, loss of a limb, body horror, choking, restraints, blood loss, memory loss, abuse AO3: Lost Kin Chapter II | Memory and Dread First Chapter | Next Chapter
Summary: Something is very wrong in Hallownest.
The Hollow Knight wakes up outside the Temple of the Black Egg. Hornet feels a shift in the kingdom from all the way in Greenpath. Together, the two of them discover the sacrifices each has made--and the grief neither one of them was allowed to feel.
Notes: Yes, I’m updating a day early. I couldn’t resist. This chapter is almost twice as long--the last one was more of a prologue. Let me know if you want to be added to the taglist, and as always, thanks for reading!
The knight lay still, a statue, an effigy. If it was still, it was obedient. If it was still and quiet and didn’t think, didn’t breathe, maybe things would not be wrong, maybe it wouldn’t be—wouldn’t be—
Outside.
Lying on the cold stone of the Crossroads, an awful emptiness echoing in its shell, a terrible pain scorching its body, and something growing, squirming, in its chest that could not be there—was not allowed to be there.
Where was the comforting half-light of the temple? Where were the familiar chains digging into its shell? Where was the Radiance?
A breath forced its way in, the air thick and chokingly sweet, like breathing through syrup. It burned like a spell-brand, like ice on wet skin. The pain was suddenly, horribly present, pressing down with a weight and a force that drove the breath out again with a rattle like a stone in a well. Its chest and shoulder shimmered with heat, pulsing brighter each instant, the cold stone beneath its back scraping the edges of a dozen open wounds. Void trickled from its shell, leaving behind a chill that gripped its limbs like pincers.
And something icy fluttered in its chest like a set of wings, like a second heartbeat, because it was empty, it had lost the Radiance, and it was alone, adrift, broken, purposeless—
The next breath seized in its throat and it twitched, then convulsed, driven by an instinct it couldn’t suppress, something base, some animal terror, some flaw that had somehow never been driven from it. Its shell screeched against the stone as it thrashed like something gutted, like prey, until the wet catch in its throat dissolved and another breath rushed in, shuddering piteously.
The reawakened pain nearly stole the next breath away entirely. It had endured centuries of agony, dreamed eternities of torture, and pain was familiar, pain was a weakness, pain was a threat to its control. But it had been chained down, forced into stillness, able to wait and breathe and allow it to ebb. Movement was a new torture. Movement and this new thing inside it, this thing that wasn’t entirely physical but that hurt as badly as any of its wounds, this thing that had invaded it and was beating about like a caged bird and wouldn’t let it rest.
It had lost the Radiance.
It fumbled backward through its memories, back through the blazing pain and the darkness, through the waking and the realization and its shade’s rebellious struggle. It reached past them and found…
Nothing.
Farther still, the endless years of imprisonment were a blinding stretch of searing dreams, cruel illusions, interminable sameness that ached with ennui. But of whatever world-shaking event had shattered its chains, cast it out like waste, pierced its shell with nail-holes and caused the throbbing crack in its mask, it could find nothing.
Driven by a strange, heavy urgency—whatever it was had already happened, could not be stopped, could not be altered, but it wanted, needed, to know—it lifted its head.
It lay as if it had been thrown, sprawled before the sealed door of the temple, its nail an arm’s length away, stained with void and bright, sticky splatters of infection. Its cloak was in tatters, its armor nothing more than a few scraps of rusted metal, still bound to its body by the uncomfortable outward-straining growth of its shell.
When it fumbled to sit up, its horns overbalanced it and it slumped sideways instead, weighed down by a strangeness on its left side—its shoulder seemed both too heavy and not heavy enough, and when the joint scraped the ground it burst alight with pain once more, nearly enough to throw the knight backward into unconsciousness.
Nothing happened when it tried to reach out with its left arm, the motion blurring into stillness into motion into stillness—
It lurched, scraping away the concealing cloak with its good hand and twisting its aching neck to stare down at the wound.
Ah.
The pounding in its head grew lighter for a moment, almost a relief, but replaced by a calm more complete than anything it had ever been able to summon, a numbness that superseded even the thought of having lost the Radiance, because its arm was gone.
In its place was a mass of light, a twisted riot of orange, layering and overlapping like petals, pulsing and throbbing to a beat outside its body. The infection had finally overcome its mind and gone for its flesh in these last few months; it remembered now, but dimly. It… hadn’t been aware of much by then, its mind full of light, only light, that terrible light…
It hadn’t taken long for her to chew through its shell. Another few months, perhaps, and there would have been nothing left to find.
It had still been hale enough to fight, it seemed, judging from the nail-marks that scored its carapace. It touched one, its fingers coming away drenched in void. They ranged everywhere, from shallow gouges on its shins and thighs to the wide, gaping holes in its chest, plus the exit wounds on its back. The concentric burn-marks of offensive spells made a map of battle on its flesh, etching it with runes in a language it couldn’t read.
Its shade might not be able to escape, but if it waited long enough, its shell might empty anyway.
But… what had it been fighting?
The effort to remember made it clutch its throbbing head, claws digging chips of chitin from the crack between its eyes. Not the Radiance; she was long past being able to take any physical form. That was why she stole minds, inhabited bodies, gnawed through shell and shade, using up her hosts the way fire used a match—
Pain shot through it again at its involuntary shudder. The bubbles of fluid in its shoulder burned like acid, still chewing at its limb, as if obeying orders given by an absent monarch.
Monarch.
Father.
The shudder that wracked it now was something entirely different, still born of memory and dread, but of a different sort. It remembered the light touch of cold claws, the commanding chill of an ascended mind, the contained power and frigid control of a god in a mortal body.
Father had shaped the spells on its carapace, shaped its mind into an empty shrine, its body into a weapon. Father had forged it for this war.
Father would fix this.
It shoved over onto its remaining elbow, reached for its nail. Its legs would obey—they would have to obey. It didn’t know the way—it had never left the city before its final journey to the temple—but it knew the direction.
Down.
It took nearly another hour to navigate the circuitous path Hornet was now forced to take to the temple, needle held ready to fend off the beasts maddened by infection. The air was drier but still thick, though in a different way than in Greenpath. It was heavy here, laden with false sweetness, the smell of the infection stronger than anywhere else, and she had to fight not to hold her breath against it.
Your mind is your own. Your fight is your own. Your will is your own.
Tangled as her feelings toward her mother were, she had this much to thank her for: Hornet knew her own mind. Knew herself and her capabilities, and knew that she was strong enough to carry the burdens pushed upon her. She had been raised to rule, even if the only territory she ruled was herself.
Down past the last of the ledges, into the tunnels. The warmth of the hot springs below fed into the cavernous rooms, heating the floors until the stone hissed where the infection seeped through the cracks. She was nearly to the upward turnoff—she could follow the paths in her mind until she stood on the temple threshold and confronted whatever knowledge she found there.
Scramble through a narrow tunnel, past the goams in their burrows, up and out into the downward passage for the great elevator, and then—
She stopped.
The cavern was silent, vastly silent, a heavy emptiness that felt more at home in a tomb than in the echoing spaces of the Crossroads. For an instant she wasn’t sure what had halted her, and then she saw it.
Between the bars of the elevator, a night-black shape huddled on the stones, a pile of limbs and a curving mask belonging to a creature many times bigger than she. Wariness prickled over her spiked neck; all too often in these caverns she had seen the ease with which hunter became prey. Fierce as she was, she was far from the fiercest beast in these burrows.
Still, the cavern was quiet, as quiet as the Crossroads ever got, full of only the goams’ far-off rumble. In that silence, the echo of her footfall rushed back at her, brushing over her like a warning whisper.
She approached slowly, claws curled over her needle hilt. Her heart skipped like a pebble. The shape was so large that her body filled with the hot, liquid, instinctual fear of a small creature, pushing her to run, hide, escape while she still could.
It still had not moved. Hornet narrowed her eyes, easing her needle out ahead of her, loosing a thread of silk should she need to flee downward. The thing was four-limbed, lying limp under a ratty gray cloak that barely came to its waist, each of its matched horns as long as she was tall, curving over the stone like ivory.
The shape of it seemed familiar, and as soon as that thought flickered into her mind she saw it, a dim blue shadow, cast in stone, weeping runnels of water under the perpetual rain of the City of Tears.
The monument to the Hollow Knight.
Through its sacrifice, Hallownest lasts eternal.
She loosed a quivering breath. It couldn’t—it couldn’t be—
The knight stirred.

Ships of Star Trek
Note: These are not the ships of Star Trek, but from the civilizations featured in those series from the 20th and 21st centuries, where the majority of play takes place. A few tweaks are needed (mostly speed and shields) to get to the later eras.
Tumblr media
Name: Early Battlecruiser (Rutan Host/Skrull/Changeling) Size: 6 DC: 2800 Toughness: 2 Crew: 4 Acceleration: 5 Accuracy/Sensors: 7 Armor Value (Hull): 160 Shield DC: 2000 (Regenerating) Handling: 1 Range: Minor Inter-Stellar Max Speed: NA Additional Builds: Emergency Measures: 4 Point Extra Space: 3 FTL Capacity: Warp 3 Guns: 12-14 Phaser Banks (300 Phaser Damage), 2-4 Torpedo Launcher Other Equipment: Intellect 5, Medical Facilities
In one corner of the galaxy, the Rutan Host/Founders/Daemonites/Dire Wraiths/Skrulls use these ships to enforce their order in their territory. Only they have the resources to build such ships while limited by Warp speeds.
Tumblr media
Name: Cruiser (Federation Constitution-class vessel, Klingon K'Tinga or D7, Bajoran Freighter, Jem'Hadar Flagship) Size: 5 DC: 2100 Toughness: 2 Crew: 4 (Full Crew) Acceleration: 3 Accuracy/Sensors: 6 Armor Value (Hull): 150 Shield DC: 1500 Handling: 1 Range: Minor Inter-Stellar Max Speed: 600
Additional Builds: Emergency Measures: 6 Point Extra Space: 3 FTL Capacity: Warp 4
Guns: 4-8 Phaser Banks (300 Phaser Damage), 2-6 Torpedo Launcher (Photon) (200 Torpedoes total.)
Other Equipment: Intellect 5, Medical Facilities, Transporter
Most ships in the Original Series or earlier eras were around this size. Many science vessels and cruisers are in this size category as well. A full crew component is needed for these ships.
In the late 20th/early 21st century, this is the top-of-the-line ship of the various non-Goa'uld civilizations. The Draconians (Klingons), The Cappellan's/Iridonians, Kree and their various subspecies, The Nestene Consciousness, Yaut'ja/Predators, the refugee fleet of the Denizens of Yaddith, and the Rutan Host/Changelings.
The Changeling Ships have an additional weapon, a Phased Polaron Disruptor which deals 300 Plasma damage.
Tumblr media
Name: Defiant/Heavy Fighter/Transport (Jem'Hadar Attack Ship, Klingon Bird of Prey, Romulan Bird of Prey, Bajoran Assault Vessel) Size: 3 DC: 800 Toughness: 3 Crew: (4) Acceleration: 5 Accuracy/Sensors: 6Armor Value (Hull): 130 Shield DC: 500 Handling: 3 Range: Minor Inter-Stellar Max Speed: 600 Additional Builds: Emergency Measures: 4 Point. Extra Space: FTL Capacity: Warp 4 Guns: 2 Pulse Phasers (200 Phaser Damage, 2 hits per shot, -2 to hit), 2 Phaser Banks (300 Phaser damage) 2 Torpedo Launchers (8 Photon 300)
Other Equipment: Intellect 3, Medical Facilities 3, Transporter
Heavy Fighters, large cargo haulers, and other ships too small to be cruisers, but too large to be fighters or shuttles. Skrull/Rotan Host/Changeling vessels are also equipped with a Phased Polaron Cannon which deals 200 Plasma damage. Also, Romulan Birds of Prey Torpedo deal Plasma damage
Tumblr media
Name: Fighter or Large Shuttle Size: 2 DC: 560 Toughness: 2 Crew: (Pilot, Gunner) Acceleration: 5 Accuracy/Sensors: 6 Armor Value (Hull): 70 Shield DC: 400 Handling: 3 Range: Minor Inter-Stellar Max Speed: 600
Additional Builds: Reduced Armor Emergency Measures: None Extra Space: FTL Capacity: Warp 3 Guns: 2 Light Phasers (200 Phaser Damage), 1 Torpedo Launcher (8 Torpedoes, 300 damage) Other Equipment: Intellect 4, Medical Facilities 3
Fighters are rare in the Federation, and many others powers see little use for them. They remain effective, however, it's just that society and economics work against the building and training of Fighter craft. More often, a weaponless captain's yatch or shuttelcraft.
Tumblr media
Name: Runabout Size: 0 DC: 200 Toughness: 0 Crew: (Pilot) Acceleration: 5 Accuracy/: 4 Armor Value (Hull): 55 Shield DC: 200 (Original Series era. Add 100 for Next Gen, subtract 100 for Enterprise era) Handling: 5 Range: Minor Inter-Stellar Max Speed: 600 Additional Builds: Reduced Armor Emergency Measures: None Extra Space: 0 FTL Capacity: Warp 2 Other Equipment: Intellect 4, Medical Facilities 3 A glorified escape pod, really, also used for exploration when the transporters are not fully functional.

no lead nor steel shall reach him so [Golden Kamuy, Ogata & Yuusaku] -- gen oneshot
Ogata character study || 1705 words
A good marksman could swear blind that he knew a good shot before his bullet left the barrel.
Ogata was a good shot. The moment he pulled the trigger on Yuusaku, he knew he'd made a mistake.
Warnings: canon-typical violence, character death, Ogata is messed up and regrets nothing, this is not a nice softe redemption story.
A/N: written for @narramin
(On Ao3)
===/\===
.
      1.
Ogata knew the rumours.
Second Lieutenant Hanazawa Yuusaku is the eight virtues personified, they said. No wonder he was promoted so young. No wonder he had the honour of bearing the flag.
Perhaps Ogata knew the rumours best  because they were spoken carefully around him— whispers like prey rustling the grass, catching his attention whether he willed it or not.
He's  that Ogata's brother, they said. No, reliably came the disbelieving reply. Can't be, no way, you've got to be lying, is it true? It's true, the Second Lieutenant said so, though Ogata tries to keep it quiet. Ah, well it makes sense,  he's the bastard after all, isn't he? Hah, in more ways than one…
Sideways glances between himself and their vaunted officer, not nearly as discreet as the men of the 7th Division believed themselves to be.
Have you heard? asked First Lieutenant Tsurumi in a conspiratorial whisper when he had Ogata alone. They say the Second Lieutenant is very principled.
Yes, Ogata has heard.
Shall we see for ourselves? proposed the First Lieutenant, hand outstretched, an offer.
.
.
      一.
"Life is a long road."
Grandmother taught this to him in a voice that was light to mask the weight of wisdom in those heavy words. After Mother's death, Grandmother had never faltered in her duties though she grieved, going through the funeral proceedings with head held high, and seeing to Ogata's every need with reliability that Mother had never managed, though she had tried.
"The longer one's road grows, the more places to stumble, and for impurity to rest on the soul. With time, every person falls to the suffering of existence."
She used one of her wrinkled, gnarled hands to smooth back Ogata's clipped-short hair, soothing and pleasant.
"It is just the way life is," she said.
.
.
      2.
Ogata approached Yuusaku for the first time since the young officer had first called him brother, and the younger man lit up with such unadulterated delight that it sent a shudder of disgust down Ogata's spine.
He had to be faking. No one got that excited about a night out with their bastard half-brother. But as long as the Second Lieutenant wanted to play the good brother, that suited Ogata just fine.
Ogata led Yuusaku to the pleasure district, watching with amusement as the younger man's delight turned to discomfort, to embarrassment, to distress.
"Brother… I'm terribly sorry," he said, bowing. And he  sounded sorry too, as if it physically pained him to refuse Ogata's first tenuous offer of brotherhood. His sincerity grated, as did his refusal. In one move, Yuusaku had both undermined Ogata's objective, and plainly made the grave insult that— however much he claimed to want Ogata for an elder brother— Ogata's wants and ways were beneath him.
With the trap now useless, there was no choice but to let him go, and Yuusaku walked out of the establishment as free and upright as ever.
But Ogata could be patient. As the war went on— as the acrid gunpowder, piss, shit, and anguish seeped into them all— Yuusaku would stumble. Ogata just had to bide his time and try again, try better.

His mother was beautiful in death. She had hundreds of admirers from the peak of her career, and many a swooning painter had captured her likeness. A portrait of her had been gifted to them, and it smiled bright-eyed and gentle upon Ogata from the family altar as she never had in life.
"It doesn't look like her," he remarked, as he stood side by side with his grandmother and offered incense. He remembered his mother's back as she stood in the middle of a room for long stretches of time, silent and unmoving. Her profile, as she stared out the window, watching for a man who would never come.
The joss sticks burned down to ash, and Grandmother lifted her head from her prayers. She bowed and turned away, gesturing for him to follow. He followed suit.
"People see what they want to see," she said, once she had closed the door behind them. Grandmother was very different from Mother, in that way. She always paid attention to him, even if she was silent at first. He just had to be patient.
"Men wanted her beauty, so they took whichever parts of her they found beautiful and painted over all the other parts to suit their tastes. They did not know her character, the hardship she went through. The  geisha, the  maiko… they suffer greatly for their success. But it was our hope that she would have a good life, a better life than the one we could give her. Not..."
Heartache. Deep despair. The delusion that roused her from bed only to make the same dish, day after day: a desperate, futile offering to a love that didn't realise.
Ogata understood.

"Superior Private Ogata. It appears that Yuusaku is a more gallant soldier than we imagined. He's won over the hearts of all the other men."
Ogata let out the breath he'd been holding for his shot and lowered his rifle. He could read between the lines and take the orders the First Lieutenant preferred not to say explicitly. Plausible deniability and all that. It's why the First Lieutenant liked him.
"So you're saying we're better off not killing him, sir?" asked Ogata, reloading and already looking for his next target. He didn't need an answer. "Understood."
Ogata led Yuusaku wraithlike over the fields where gunfire and screaming had reigned earlier that day. The night was quiet but far from silent, the sighing of the wind an unearthly substitute for the dead and dying soldiers' groans. Yuusaku's boots scuffed the earth as he followed. He made enough noise that Ogata could have shot him at fifty yards, blindfolded.
"I want to see you kill him," Ogata said earnestly, pressing his knife into Yuusaku's hands. Yuusaku flinched and his eyes slid away, looking for escape, looking anywhere but Ogata's eyes, anywhere but the Russian soldier gagged and bound at their feet.
"Father said I have to keep my hands clean," Yuusaku begged off, as if the word 'Father' could invoke more authority than 'Lieutenant General' or 'martial law'. Ah, but Yuusaku was a beloved child, Ogata remembered, and this was him trying to appeal to the filial respect that Ogata never had the chance to develop for the man.
Something must have shown on Ogata's face.
Yuusaku embraced him and Ogata's blood swarmed like locusts in his veins, eating him alive with irritating discontent and a curious, persistent thought.

Mother's death was Ogata's first. A lot of customs went with it, though Ogata didn't really see why. When everything was over, Grandmother paid a priest to come bless the family and sprinkle salt at him.
"It's for your own good. Death is an unclean thing, we don't want its shadow over you," Grandmother explained when Ogata grumbled about some of it getting it into his eye. Her voice wavered ever so slightly, as she smoothed the front of her kimono. "Remember to do this after I've passed."
Ogata buried her the year he was conscripted. He didn't get the priest afterwards. There wasn't much point, on the way to a war.

It was so easy to find Yuusaku on the field, even in the chaos.
Gallant Yuusaku, leading the throng of soldiers eager to kill and die for the emperor and their nation. Ogata could frame them in his rifle sight like a painter drafting a standing screen. Yuusaku, marked by the rising sun.
It was so easy that it was a wonder how the enemy snipers hadn't gotten him first. The waving flag begged to be targeted. Did the Russians dismiss him for having no gun? For never drawing his unblooded sabre?
It was so easy to line up the shot.
What would happen if— ?
Ogata pulled the trigger.

      四.
Birds scattered as he missed, taking to the peach-pink sky above the fields behind the family house in Ibaraki. Ogata took aim for his second shot, but the timing was already so far off that there was no point. He lowered his grandfather's rifle instead of wasting another bullet.
He'd been over-eager, moving too much, and too fast. The light was gone now, and he would have to return home empty-handed.

Yuusuke's distant silhouette crumpled. His corpse joined the hundreds of bodies on the battlefield, lost in the chaos of the regiment as he went down, the bright white and red and gold tasselled flag falling slowly after him before it too disappeared from sight. Ogata lowered his rifle with a strange sense of frustration and ran his hand through his regulation cropped-short hair.
There was a strange absence of something he thought would be there, and with that... Disappointment. Profound disappointment. Like the shot when he was a child in the fields behind the family house in Ibaraki and learning to hunt, the birds scattering as he missed.
Yuusaku crowned by the sun, beloved.
He'd been overeager and now gallant Yuusaku would be forever gallant, forever pure. The impurity of death didn't seem to stick, and now Yuusaku was an immortal nuisance and Ogata still had no answer to the discontent crawling on his back.
Ogata's hand clenched on the butt of his rifle, white-knuckled with cold. This was the first time he felt  bad when he'd made his shot, bereft of something out of reach, which could have been his but never would. It was a pricking irritation similar to missing a shot. Even though he hadn't.
There were no answers here. There were no answers in the dead. Not in his mother, not in his grandmother, not in this man who called him brother.
Ogata turned and First Lieutenant Tsurumi was there. The First Lieutenant smiled in understanding and nodded in approval, as if knowing Ogata's thoughts before Ogata himself.
The father who only had enough love to raise one virtuous son. Yes, Ogata could just ask him directly. There was no point thinking about Yuusaku any longer.
Yuusaku was dead. That was the end of it. Ogata couldn't reach him anymore.
Time to turn to the living.
