Happy Birthday, Sparrowverse!

Of all the places Eren has come to visit over the years, this place is one of his favourites.

He sits in front of a small, wooden table, a window front to his left, the simple, plain letters on it not really obscuring his view to the busy street outside.

Three years ago, I wrote these very first lines for Sparrow.

Actually, I started writing this story on November 18th 2016, but since I am no plotter, I often need to “search” for the right start and poke around in the dark until I feel the pull of something atmospheric that’s worthy of being translated into a written tale.

I remember vividly how the story felt to me back then. Like this huge mess of emotions coming from a very deep place within myself I couldn’t put into words back then, and up to this day find hard to describe.

It caught me fierce, though, and I remember it pouring over me, like out of buckets. Until today, I look at how I wrote this story—with something like a plan (which usually never works for me during writing) and a schedule (which also tends to get into my way of artistic expression)… And I scratch my head over myself since I have no clue how I did it, let alone within such a brief time frame to actually make this advent calendar happen.

What I know is, I wrote this story with nothing but pure adoration during each second. I wrote it with joy—no rules and no self-imposed restrictions. I wanted to write something new, give the characters a story I would love to read myself, and in the end, found not only my place in writing but friends to share it with.

Today, we have a revised version of this story. We have a translation into Polish, two prequels, a podfic, and a big-arse sequel. Looking back, it makes me smile at how a story can evolve and how it can grow.

It all wouldn’t have been possible without people reading this very first version of the story and sharing their enthusiasm with me, not few of them every single day, with each advent calendar window opened. Some of you guys even stick around now during Magpie, and keep sending me feedback after all these years. I want you all to know I do not take your loyalty and kindness for granted, and if I could hug you all, I would. As a substitute, I’ll share a little something here on tumblr later today, so keep posted.
