oh no I accidentally started making fakemon for the first time since my fake Fidough and Lechonk evolutions. these were designed for a few people from their discord usernames and from their own vague description of things they might wanna see

first up is @whitster-lizzy

I think by the end of a somewhat confusing back and forth that I was supposed to make a combo of Bulbasaur, Medusa, and poison ivy. I took inspiration from the last two, but just could not get Bulbasaur's plump little front half to look good morphed into a tail. instead, I went for more of a 'protector of the forest' thing and added a maternal vibe that Whitney kinda gives off and ended up with this. I wanted to put an emphasis on three for the three leaves of poison ivy, so even its tears (which may or may not be from sad edits and the inability to hug anything without poisoning them :(() carry that, as do the scales sporadically thrown around there. the arms became vines when I was too tired and frustrated to keep trying to redraw actual arms to get them to look right (oops) and the hair is just a mess as I'd expect vine-hair to be

next is @rauko-is-a-free-elf, who started this whole thing with a comment about someone mispronouncing their name as 'Rocco'

for whatever reason, I came up with an ice bird instead of something that screams 'rock type' idk why either. took inspiration from blue jays (one of their favorite birds) as well as peacocks with the tail and tried to go for sort of a crystal structure on there (along with dots that were supposed to be snow but failed to look like it) while still including the distinctive dark swoops blue jays have on their tails. the wings were supposed to be icicles and that was actually the first thing I designed rather than the head or the body. it really does make use of diamond shapes so I did try to add some rock type elements to it mostly in color scheme though maybe it would've been better without. I'm not really sure why it has a mask other than I wanted to give its face some dark lines like blue jays have but my brush was too thick to add too many little details. so mask👌

I didn't have any sort of a prompt or direction for this one and based it entirely off of their username. I originally took inspiration from Machop in the way of body shape and went from there, developing a vaguely reptilian form somehow that looked a lot more lizard-y before the dark typing came out in the form of skeleton-bits not unlike the Cubone line. the spiky bat there is a reference to The Walking Dead ofc, which led me to develop more of a baseball vibe with the dark line under its eyes representative of the grease baseball played use to reduce glare and with the sorta long sock-like design for the feet, along with the baseball stitching pattern that doubles as what's supposed to represent the stripes like all baseball uniforms have. its hands have always looked boxing glove-y from the very first beginnings of the sketch so I just colored them to match the rest of the color scheme and oh no now it's a fighting type oops

this one is also inspired by their username, which at first had me thinking about how dragons hoard coins but then somehow got turned into c a t and I don't really know why. either way I tried to keep a coin theme going (especially with its eyes, which are supposed to look like coins) while also making it a dark/fairy as sorta requested and it became a representation of the duality of cat: both angel and devil (also a twist of money being the root of evil and all that). so it got fluffy and spiky at once and now has pitchfork-themed whiskers and a few occult symbols to offset its scarf and heart motifs. I think this one was actually the first design I worked on and to the relief of everyone, I actually used a reference of a cat to get the pose right 🎉

(idk why there's a bad drawing of a nickel I think I was originally gonna make that into a background but I did decide against it in favor of making these look more like official pokemon character reference sheet things. enjoy the bad nickel anyway)

next one up is @anyreiart

idk what happened with this one. I don't know much about anyrei and their username doesn't inspire much in the way of fakemon (beyond a few seconds where I thought of making a sun-inspired something with the 'rei' becoming 'ray'), so I went with a theme based on what I do know, which is that they paint, along with two pictures that they sent, one of which was Gothorita (the other was for a hairstyle I think but I did steal the funky red and black checkered tie from that because reasons). going off of that, this one is supposed to look like a paintbrush with its body and its edgy anime hair, and its belt continues carrying the paintbrush motif. since I was provided with the request to make it goth, I added thick eyeshadow-esque lines under its eyes and kinda used the hairstyle from the picture while also turning it into a paintbrush that utilizes their favorite color as the paint color. carrying the gothic art idea, I tried to make its lower half (originally meant to be a blobby sort of easel shape before I changed it) into something resembling stained glass windows that was famous at the time (I got confused multiple times while making the stained glass design so it's not all that consistent uh). it was supposed to be dark type, but ended up giving off more of a ghost/fairy vibe after I realized I accidentally made it a ballerina paintbrush (oops)

moving on to @as-lost-as-sams-shoe

this one is heavily inspired by their username, starting with the scallion, which is a kind of oniony thing. they themself actually added the 'wrapped' part to push the pun a little further, which made me think of Swadloon and its cozy little leaf blanket, which naturally led to the scallion with its massive head and slimmer body (to match the shape of an onion more than a scallion admittedly) to be all wrapped up. scallions have leaves that look like they were cut straight across, which lead to the development of its 'bangs' (which was also inspired by the fact that scallions themselves grow underground and only the leafy parts are seen, adding a 'shy' element) as well as the tassels along the bottom of its leaf-wrap. the lines along its body are made to represent both the rings inside of an onion as well as the word 'rapscallion,' which is a term that can be used to mean villain or bad guy, earning it prison-esque stripes. its eyes are massive as a play on onions making people cry, and the smaller parts of its eyes that I can't remember the names of are based off of onion rings. the skull and crossbones shape is just to make it pirate-y, which is what I can't not picture when I read the word 'rapscallion' for one reason or another

and finally @zybynarx, who gets a finished one as well as a sketch I scrapped and started anew

I actually had a lot to work with for this one, as they specifically asked for a fire type puppy pokemon. first instinct is ofc to go for a dalmatian, which is the firehouse dog or whatever, and I wanted to make the lower half black as a reference to that scene from 101 Dalmatians where they coat themselves in ashes to appear completely black. I made some firefighter-y stripes and tried to make its back legs look almost like boots which looks, in a couple of word, super weird. I then added tinder fluff on head and a kindling sort of thing on the neck, but when I tried to develop the back half's design, my brain sorta died and I couldn't decide what to do, so I went back to the drawing board fully intent on making like a complete copy of what I'd already tried

instead I ended up with this personification of tinder that's just all fluffy all the way down instead of the almost lion mane of tinder design I was originally picturing. I carried over the themes of adding firefighter stripes to allude to a firefighter's jacket as well as the kindling collar thing the other one had. I kept the bottom half black but made it more like wispy smoke than ash that trails behind it when it moves (which is a lot because puppy). the eyes are two pieces of coal and the nose is supposed to look like a match but doesn't. it looks very fluffy but is probably too squirmy to make a good lapdog. it just has that squirmy ball of energy vibe to it

whether people really like these or not, it was definitely a learning experience, and I did pick up on a lot of things to keep in mind for future fakemon designs (particularly not to overcomplicate things and go more for consistency, which I did not originally do as I wasn't planning on make them into character sheets at all and didn't plan beyond the main drawings of the fakemon)

Not even fun ones, C tier at best. So, something like T@yl*r Sw*ft's boyfriend's football career, but one line about playing Blue for a few hours at his cousin's house.

KANTO, and it's the most gorgeous thing you've ever seen after the clear lack of care put into their non gen 1 games since the Switch launched. A selling point is, once again, no new Pokémon after the og 151 so older fans can enjoy it better. Your starters are Charmander, Charmander, and Charmander, you might encounter Bulbasaur and Squirtle in post game. Your job is to stop EEEVIL outsiders from the rest of the regions with their newer Pokémon from settling into Kanto. Johto is having an awesome party next door with all the regions invited, but there's been a convenient landslide blocking the only way over. It's just reskinned Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee. Professor Oak is your age and putting moves on your mom.

Features a mythical Pokémon based on depression that looks like a tiny salary man, comes with its own movie featuring Ash as a depressed Millenial realizing he peaked at 10. He has to get a job. Pikachu is dying of old age and Ash has to "grow up" and release him and all of his other still living Pokémon. It cuts to real life, and Pokémon was just a game he has been playing for years to cope with his parents' divorce and eventually his own with Misty, then May, then Dawn, then Serena, then Goh, etc. Ash's dad is finally revealed: it's Chris Pratt with bad cgi wrinkles, back with milk. They go to the arcade to play Mario to stomp on some................................................................................................................................................................................... KOOPAS.

I'm planning on doing regular check-ins that peeps can read or skip as much as they please. If you want to see behind the scenes of my projects or get to know me a bit better, feel free to peek below the cut! If not, just look at this color palette I made for my web dev class and admire it:

I know green and pink are my favorite colors, so I may be just a tad biased, but look!!! Look at how pretty it is!!!

I plan to use the palette for a website that is basically a guided tour of a fictional town that's populated by bug people, and while the colors used in the initial character sketches are still my preference, I don't think they look too bad in this proof of concept image! They definitely need some tweaking, and some details in the art itself need correcting, but all around it's not too shabby :>

I also made the logo for the website which, while uninspired, doesn't look that bad. I'm not in a logo design course, so I can't be too upset about that. I made two versions--- a light and dark one--- so that I could have it appear on most colors of background.

Also, I've printed off tons of art and stuck it on my walls over the past few days to inspire me. The art wall has been very successful in beautifying my space, but I've been a bit too worn out to draw much other than the start of a project where I draw individual generations of pokemon by memory. Venusaur looks exactly like I remembered it, but also nothing like that at all. Charizard's line only looks halfway decent by virtue of Twig existing.

I must say, though, that I am charmed by these drawings' doofy lil grins. Just look at Bulbasaur. He is raring to go! Charmander is ready to shake your hand! Look at these lads!!

I've been trying to learn Clip Studio Paint by drawing a new The Present is a Gift comic in it, but I cannot begin to explain to you all how intimidating of a program it is for me. I'm a Procreate gal, y'all. I have a conniption whenever I look at the Photoshop interface. When I look at this:

I am desperate for the cozy white space of this:

I spent over an hour struggling to draw a simple piece for Instagram, admittedly while desperately trying to get OBS to not give out on me while I recorded my screen, but I think that I'm slowly learning how to not faint whenever the Paint window boots up.

Anyhoo--- enjoy the WIP teaser for the upcoming comic featuring a chat between Dusknoir (piloting a KO'd Twig) and Darkrai amidst a cave-in. If I am found dead, know that said comic worked alongside Clip Studio Paint to kill me.

As an update for The Present is a Gift in terms of the fanfic, I recently broke 6,000 words for the first draft. I haven't been writing too regularly--- when I do, it's usually to just sit down for 30 minutes max to try and get a little bit of a head start on NaNoWriMo coming up--- but whenever I do, the words come in batches of 400-700+ at a time. My dudes, I used to take a week to reach the lower end of that amount. I've been beating perfectionism back with a stick while sobbing "Quantity begets quality! Quantity begets quality!", but since I've set myself a challenge to write as many garbage words as possible without editing them until the first draft is done, I've been writing--- and enjoying the process of writing--- more than I have in my entire life.

I've been trying to win NaNoWriMo, a challenge where you write 50k words in November, for the last 7 years. I resigned myself to being a NaNo rebel and trying to write just 15k words next month. But if I keep cranking out 1,500 words in under two writing sprints per day--- without properly trying to eliminate distractions--- I think I could actually win for once??? I didn't think Pokemon Mystery Dungeon fanfiction would be what gave me a fighting chance at winning NaNoWriMo, but here I am. PMD brainrot truly is a miraculous thing, but I'll have to see exactly miraculous it is on the 1st of November.

So... yep! I probably should have figured out a way to sign off on check-in posts before deciding to publish this. Oops. Welp. Um. Thanks for reading?

So, I haven’t really posted or reblogged much regarding Scarlet and Violet, but I just wanted to make this post regarding the whole “is Sprigatito gonna become bipedal?” debate going on.

Now personally, I’m gonna pick Sprigatito; I’m a cat person, I chose Litten in both Moon and Ultra Moon (despite my feelings about Incineroar), cat Pokémon in general are my friends.

But I want to look at starter trends by type to go into why I think Sprigatito might stay quadrupedal, despite the last cat starter not doing the same.

Edit: I wrote this a couple weeks ago and just hadn’t gotten around to posting it, so I’d like to just address something. Yes, I am aware of the leak, but given how it was from 4chan, I am electing to ignore it until we are given something concrete/confirmed.

Looking at past starters, the Grass-type starters tend to stay in the same “-pedal” stance through the whole line, while it is the Fire-type starters that stand up. And Water-type starters are kinda all over the place. Let’s break this down.

Grass Starters

Bulbasaur: Quadrupedal, stays that way

Chikorita: Quadrupedal, stays that way

Treeko: Bipedal, stays that way

Turtwig: Quadrupedal, stays that way

Snivy: Bipedal, becomes No-pedal

Chespin: Bipedal, stays that way

Rowlet: Bipedal, stays that way

Grookey: Quadrupedal, becomes Bipedal

Fire Starters

Charmander: Bipedal, stays that way

Cyndaquil: Quadrupedal, becomes Bipedal

Torchic: Bipedal, stays that way

Chimchar: Bipedal, stays that way

Tepig: Quadrupedal, becomes Bipedal

Fennekin: Quadrupedal, becomes Bipedal

Litten: Quadrupedal, becomes Bipedal

Scorbunny: Bipedal, stays that way

Water Starters

Squirtle: Bipedal, stays that way

Totodile: Bipedal, stays that way

Mudkip: Quadrupedal, stands up mid-line, then becomes Quadrupedal* again

Piplup: Bipedal, stays that way

As you can see, every single Fire starter ends bipedally; it is the only starter type with that consistency across the board. Meanwhile, out of four Grass starters that started quadrupedally, only one becomes bipedal. While it may have been the most recent, I see Rillaboom as the exception, not the rule.

*While these two technically stand on their back legs and thus could count as Bipedal, the fact that they primarily get around on all fours has me counting it as Quadrupedal. But like I said, Water starters are all over the place.

And while we’re at it, we might as well take a look at all the other cat Pokémon to see what’s going on there.

Other Cat Pokémon

Meowth starts bipedally, and while staying that way when the Galarian variant evolves into Perrserker, it becomes quadrupedal when the other two variants evolve into Persian.

Skitty: Quadrupedal, stays that way

Shinx: Quadrupedal, stays that way

Glameow: Quadrupedal, stays that way

Purrloin: Bipedal, becomes Quadrupedal

Litleo: Quadrupedal, stays that way

Espurr: Bipedal, stays that way

As you can see, cat Pokémon in general tend to end quadrupedally.

Anyway, all this to say I think Sprigatito will stay quadrupedal. (But even if that’s not the case, I’m still picking it ‘cause ya girl can’t control herself when it comes to cats.)

[For those who don't know Spanish: 'mi starter favorito en cada generación' translates to 'my favorite starter in each generation'. I know, I know... It's just a small change, but I don't have the template anymore and I'm not going to remake it again. It was hard enough the first time.

Anyway, I really like all starters and it was pretty hard to choose one of the three for each gen. But I have a reason for each one:

Squirtle - I picked one at random when playing a mod and since they accompanied me to victory, I've been getting one whenever I can.

Chikorita - I don't get why there's so much hate towards them. I actually think they have the best designs in their gen out of the rest, typhlosion and feraligatr just look like a bigger version of their first phase.

Mudkip - They're the 🐐 out of the three. KOed with one earthquake Steven's Metagross. Not much more to say.

Piplup - Their scenes in the anime where very funny, and he's just so round and squishy looking. This was a hard pick, but Empoleon is pretty nice.

Snivy - My first ever pokemon, even before I got the games. I bought one as a plushy on by birthday as a kid and she's been by my side ever since.

Fennekin - I love their design in all the evolution line (hold it there, ya furries) Also very good stats, Greninja has low defenses and Chesnaught is too physic.

Popplio - When the first stages where revealed, I immediately liked them. Combined with the Greninja from the demo, those two where an aquatic machine of destruction.

Sobble - Much like Chikorita, I like to go against the grain. Besides, I loved Inteleon from the second he came out. Still mad his ability's the worst of the three, but I'd pick them anytime without hesitation.

When this was made, I hadn't played the 9th gen, but I think I'd choose Fuecoco.

Charizard!!!!! Startin’ these off with a big one!!!!! Possibly the BIGGEST one?????

Charizard is notable for being the single most-popular pokemon from Kanto, and the fourth-most-popular pokemon overall (according to that Pokemon of the Year poll thing awhile back). It’s easily the most iconic Fire-type; the most iconic starter; and as the mascot of Pokemon Red, is particularly beloved by those who’ve followed the series since its inception. Even Game Freak themselves acknowledge Charizard’s special significance to the franchise in recent generations, being the ace pokemon of Leon in Sword and Shield even with the Bulbasaur and Squirtle lines initially absent – truly the only Kanto starter that matters, it seems.

Unfortunately Charizard, like many Kanto pokemon, suffers from a poor transition with every graphical and artistic update. The sheer personality in the original Sugimori watercolour artworks is unmatched, and much of that is lost in modern depictions. Charizard’s simple and organic aesthetic transfers especially poorly to 3D, making its portrayal in XY onwards particularly lacking. Still, big orange dragon is a big orange dragon, and that’s going to have appeal regardless of graphical style.

Charizard, in all its marketing significance, also notably received two mega evolutions, the less-imaginative being Mega Charizard Y. With its tattered wings and sleeker form, it has a striking silhouette that feels like a strong improvement over the still-respectable base form. It also notably gains the ability Drought, allowing it to summon sunlight upon entering battle, which I’ll talk more about in a later review.

Mega Charizard X, meanwhile, goes in a completely different direction, tossing Charizard’s iconic orange colour scheme in favour of a distinctive black and blue. And looking far better in the process, speaking as someone not fond of orange. It also dropped Charizard’s Flying secondary typing for a Dragon typing, and whilst I feel Charizard’s base typing of Fire/Flying is perfectly valid, having this Fire/Dragon alternative is superb. This form also got the heavier marketing, for good reason.

So many forms omfg. Gigantamax Charizard takes on a much more monstrous visage, with a jagged mouth and wings made of fire, along with some oddly elegant diamond patterns that don’t particularly mesh with the rest of the design but end up looking appealing despite that. Gigantamax as a concept is rather underwhelming, however, with only a unique move compared to regular Dynamax forms.

On another note, it’s worth mentioning Charizard’s role in the TCG. Charizard cards are often expensive, and the pictured card from Base Set is one of the single most sought-after cards in the series, with 1st edition versions in good condition frequently selling for THOUSANDS of dollars!!! Mechanically, Charizard cards typically follow a pattern dealing lots of damage, which looks great in theory, buuut are usually near-unplayable due to their absurdly high energy requirements. Maybe for the best, given the prices.

Charizard also notably has a superb shiny form, by far one of the most popular, as black shinies usually are. It is worth mentioning it used to be purple back in GSC, which was pleasant as well, though black seems much more iconic. Shiny Mega Charizard X is already black, so it adopts a weird greenish teal, which goes poorly with the blue flame but is at least still unique, whilst Mega Charizard Y gets a pleasant shade of purple comparable to Charizard’s GSC shiny.

Overall, Charizard is a pokemon I have complex feelings about. It’s iconic and popular, which I consider justified, but I don’t have any special fondness for it myself and honestly find it rather boring (though Megazard X is quite outstanding), particularly compared to more recent takes on dragons. Still, like with most other pokemon, I’m quite happy it exists.

Bland but cool/10.

Time for another New Pokémon Snap deep dive!

To get started, let’s talk about the new Pokémon confirmed in this trailer. There’s a few more than last time, but more significantly, many of them are pretty hard to spot! Like the first trailer, a good few of them are only visible in small photos.

This trailer reveals 29 new Pokémon (yes, you can count fine, hang on), and 1 additional form:

Just look at all those teeny little photos! As before, I have to thank some friends for helping to ID a couple Pokémon. We’re up to 96 confirmed species.

This trailer also gave us a much better look at some of the difficult-to-spot Pokémon from the previous trailers, such as Inkay and Sandygast. We can also be more certain that the coral is just coral.

And thanks to the site, we’ve also gotten a better look at at least one area only seen in small pieces in the trailers. This oasis, never seen clearly elsewhere, is not quite as mysterious anymore.

That said, a brand new mystery cropped up in this trailer to take the place of those that have been solved. You may have noticed something familiar that happened with the first trailer. And that is...this bug, unidentified, hanging off the backside of the tree near Hoothoot! Definitely a 97th Pokémon, as it doesn’t match any of the others seen yet, but there’s not nearly enough here for a positive identification. The current suspicions are that this is most likely Venomoth, however.

A couple smaller mysteries are also present. A growl can be heard during the trailer’s final scene, with no visual cues for which Pokémon it came from. It sounds likely to be Liepard, already confirmed for the game, but we can’t be sure quite yet. Was a bit of a surprise either way.

And a new NPC can also be spotted in the lab in this trailer, one who is yet to be introduced.

Now then, how about other reveals? We already knew Pokémon food from the original was returning, but the new trailer reveals a proper name for it in this title: Fluffruit. This trailer also reveals the return of the Poké Flute in some form. And a new item, called an Illumina Orb, can reportedly make any Pokémon glow. We still don’t know much about the effects of glowing.

On the subject of the Illumina Phenomenon though, and keeping on track with the mysteries, the website seems to hint at some strange flowers being related to it, and these can be seen all over the third trailer (in addition to showing up a few times in the earlier ones). These flowers have large, prominent crystals in the center and come in multiple colours. It seems like these flowers are what the lab’s crest is modeled after.

Onto other things that came up in the trailer, let’s talk about scores. I didn’t touch on it much last time as it was only seen on the website and not in the trailer, but we got another look at the scoring system for the game, which does some things differently than in the original. For the unfamiliar, the original Pokémon Snap featured the following scoring metrics: Special, Size, Pose, Technique, and Other PKMN.

In New Pokémon Snap, it appears that Technique has been broken up into Direction and Placement and is no longer a multiplier. Same PKMN has been generalized to Other Pokémon and does not need to be the same species. And while the Size bonus appears to be more lenient than the original at first glance, not seen in the trailer is that the Size score is not capped at 1,000. There is also a new scoring metric for Background.

While it’s not seen yet whether the Special pose bonuses will return, it’s possible they’ve been replaced by something new: a system that ranks how rare the behavior captured is. Each Pokémon’s page in the Photodex allows you to assign a photo for each level of rarity, which should lend an extra layer to the replayability that Pokémon Snap is already known for.

Also shown off in the trailer are features for editing the photos you take. You’ll be able to fine tune photos, add filters, and apply stickers. The system is far more robust than you’d expect to be possible for any real photo, but is in line with what we’ve seen in many other games with screenshot modes. ;)

Also teased was a built-in online gallery, available for players with NSO service. The site also reveals that there will be online leaderboards.

And that’s it! There’s a little more information to be found on the site, though I’ve already written about the bulk of it for now. And in just two short months, New Pokémon Snap will be released. Regardless of whether we get more information in that time, we definitely don’t have long left to wait.

Alternate Shinies: Bulbasaur Line

My changes: For these 3 pokemon, I decided to make the main base colour brown, as it’s a common colours for frogs (other than green, the colour of the original shiny). I also think it fits this line’s grass typing quite well. I didn’t choose the orange for any particular reason, other than I thought it went well with the rest of the palette. As well as changing the flower colour, I slightly edited the colour of the leaves (to a more yellow shade of green). I think it works well!

My thoughts on the original shiny: I like the shinies of this line, I think they did one of my all time favourite lines justice! However, I do prefer the shinies I made.
