as someone whos really into the intricate rituals of piracy (and thinks izzy is too) it hurts me that he didn't get a burial at sea. he lived his whole life there, he cared about piracy as a community, he thought they were good, he deserved to have that life one last time.

I'm still on hiatus, but I caved in to drawing and sharing these sketches because I've been playing Hollow Knight to calm my nerves. It's nice to draw more simple shapes for once.
Anyways, this is Luana and Floris (not introduced yet) as...bugs. In a bug version of Tovera. Yeah. Extra explanations under the cut.
I don't know how to communicate their powers and other quirks in Hollow Knightverse speak, since of course my systems are different from HKverse's. But the is one thing I do know is that the snails' manipulation of soul very close to Luana's magic type (as she is one of the few people in the story that can use pure magic as a weapon in and of itself), and they even live in burial mounds, which fits her species well.
As for Floris, he's royalty, a descendant of someone who's treated like an ancestor of all ancestors, a powerful spell-slinging first monarch (so something like the grandson of the grandson of the grandson of the grandson of a Pale Being-like figure) so he can have a few higher being like traits as a treat.
Originally, Luana was a weaver, but since only witch characters weave sigils and the like in story and that isn't her primary way of using magic, I decided to go with the species that more closely resembles her mage class, that being a mixture of neighbor/theurgist.
Floris was also a weaver/higher being hybrid like Hornet, but now he's kinda mosskin-like/higher being hybrid. For spoiler reasons, I can't get into the nuance of his HKverse self's whole biology.

When I made this post just ten days ago, it was about mass graves discovered at Al Shifa hospital and now we have learned that the same had happened at Nasser hospital in Gaza. The same genocidal pattern: a hospital is put under siege, patients and medical staff are abducted, tortured and buried in mass graves.
But to build on the last point I wanted to bring attention to in the previous post, it is very crucial to also keep in mind is that the Palestinian Civil Defence have reported that Israel had deliberately concealed the identities of those it killed and buried in these mass graves. Close to 400 bodies have been buried in these mass graves, 58% of the recovered bodies have not been identified.
In a press conference, a spokesperson of the civil defence in Gaza said that Israel had intentionally disfigured the bodies postmortem in order to remove any identifying markers such as birthmarks. He also mentioned that they suspect that the bodies have been placed in body bags that expedited the decomposition process, destroying any possibility of them being identified.
One of the main and only ways families have been able to identify the bodies of their loved ones is through the clothes they remember them wearing the last time they saw them. I saw a video of a mother identifying her son by his striped jacket. You can see the grief mixed with relief that she will be able to give her son proper burial.
Remember when months ago I said that to be identified and buried in Gaza has become a luxury? This is very much still the case.

To all the trans people worried about how you’ll be treated once you’re just bones:
Anthropology has known about gender diversity for decades, centuries even. And the newer archaeologists are taught that the most we can test for with hard sciences is your sex. Not your gender. We can figure out if you’re intersex, but also as science will evolve, we’ll also know if you took hormones (bone density and characteristics), implants don’t degrade, your burial clothes will probably be synthetic, we’ll notice your hair length, what you’re buried with, maybe even the markers you left behind.
And there will be a good chance someone trans (even better just queer in general) will look at your file. Your data and artifacts, and see themself in you. Catch that you are their elder, and help aid the identification of your gender.
There’s a good chance you’ll be seen, and if not then that’s okay, because the people handling you will know better than to assume wrong.

TAROT CARDS ✴ SIX OF CROWS ➳ “No mourners, no funerals. Among them, it passed for ‘good luck’. But it was something more. A dark wink to the fact that there would be no expensive burials for people like them, no marble markers to remember their names, no wreaths of myrtle and rose.”
