Dp x dc idea… more of a mini fic 108
Dani is melting in front of Danny’s eyes and Danny is panicking. He reveals that he and Dani are halfas. Begging his parents to help stabilize Dani. That he couldn’t watch her melt away. his parents don’t take it well. Chasing him out of the lab.
He barley got Dani and him out with minimum injuries.
Danny had no access to proper supplies, and risks going to vlad.
Offering to be the perfect son if he saves Dani. Making him promise she would be safe and stable. Telling him all that happened. That his mom wouldn’t accept him, she didn’t even accept Danny.
He has a bad feeling when vlad eye flash red and he agrees.
After a few test the fruitloop announces he got the dna necessary to stabilize her. That he will easily synthesize the necessary components. But he wouldn’t hand over the cure unless Danny proved what he said. That he was capable of following orders and being the perfect son.
He was Holding a vial of some liquid. Telling Danny to drink it.
Vlad wouldn’t kill him right?
So he drinks the mysterious liquid. Last thing he heard was that when he wakes up he and his sister would be safe. Which confused him. Why was Jazz involved.
When he woke up things were too big. Why was everything so big? Looking around they were in a cage… on with no roof. Then he saw Dani. Dani was small. Tiny a mere toddler. Maybe 5 at the most. Wait. No no no. He was the same size.
Vlad: i hear you’re awake little badger. How unfortunate. I was hoping to move the three of us before hand. It’s not as if you’ll remember any of this. I was planning on erasing it once we were across.
Vlad was standing in front of a portal. Not his ghost portal. One separated and with a deficient design.
Vlad: this dimension simply isn’t safe for my little family. I recently recorded an artifact that will allow us to jump dimensions. One time use unfortunately. With no stable portal not even your allies will find us.
Yea. No. That’s not happening. Danny didn’t agree to be turned into a toddler. Nor loose his memories.
He wasn’t going with the fruitloop. He just had to phase out of here. He couldn’t get himself to fully phase. Only a hand.
Vlad who hadn’t even looked up from the now glowing portal: “even you should have realized your powers aren’t working. It’s why i needed more dna samples. To fix both my children. Far to young, body’s to frail to handle them all. You’ll slowly grow into them.”
The fruitloop finally turned to face him and Dani. Approaching them. Picking them up. Did he really just pick him up?
No.
This was not okay with Danny. So he started hitting, kicking and squirming. All while Dani stayed asleep.
Vlad: Daniel behave. Act more like your sister. The portal is only one way trip. You wouldn’t want to be left behind now would you.
The fruitloop was only getting close to the portal. He had to act.
One way trip… Act more like his sister. Act like Dani.
So.
He hit the man as hard as he could. Until the man let go and essentially threw them to the ground oh so close to this new dimension. He didn’t have time to think.
They were so close to the portal.
He just grabbed Dani chucked his shoe at vlad to unbalance the man and fell through the portal.
**
Jonathan and Martha Kent certainly weren’t expecting two toddlers to fall out of the sky into their field. It certainly wouldn’t be the first time they took in two children.
Their oldests could do with some younger siblings.
Even if they did have to coax the two twins?siblings? inside with pie later that night.

WIP excerpt for VideoGeek; Kara gets to Earth on time and the Kents get a two-for-one special on free kids. ( + non-chrono link for mobile users )
“Ka-Lair,” Ma says again, low and soothing. She says some other words too. Kara doesn't understand them.
She can't stop crying.
She's not supposed to cry. Not in front of Kal. Kal has to see her smiling. Kal–Kal has to–
He has to.
So she can't be crying right now.
“Ka-Lair,” Ma repeats one more time. She reaches out. Puts a hand on the porch between them.
Kara needs to stop crying. She's fine. She just needs to stop crying. She's fine because she has to be fine and she's not crying because Kal needs her to not be crying and she–and she–
And she's fine.
She is.
Ma says something else. Turns her hand upright in offering.
Kara can't let go of Kal to take it.
It's not safe to let go of Kal.
He’s so little, and she knew he could fall. She knew it. How was she so stupid, to leave him alone and unwatched all the way across the porch? She knew better! She’d thought about it, and he’s so little!
And she’d still turned away and taken her eyes off him, because she’d been so weak and pathetic as to need to be upset.
Kal needs her not to be upset. Kal needs her to take care of him.
Kal needs her, and she let him fall.
Kara sobs harder, and Ma leans in and wraps her arms around her. She wants to shove away, but can’t do that to her. Can’t be ungrateful like that, when Ma and Pa have given them so much.
But she doesn’t deserve it. She let Kal fall, and she’s being a problem and an inconvenience to Ma, and she’s being a problem. She can’t do that. This. Any of this.
She needs to not be a problem. She needs to help out and not cause trouble and not inconvenience them and take care of Kal and never, ever take her eyes off him and–and–
And she needs to stop crying like this!
Why can’t she just–just stop?
Ma makes strange and quiet little hissing noises and hugs her tighter; strokes a hand back through her hair. The last person who did that was her mother, and now her mother isn’t the last person who did that. And her mother will never do it again. Will never . . . never . . .
Why can’t she stop crying?
Kal chimes in distress again, still trying to squirm out of her arms, and Kara unthinkingly tightens her grip to keep him there. He yelps in pain, and she jerks–lets him go quick, and he nearly tumbles out of her lap. Ma catches him against her chest, and Kara let him fall again, she let him fall she let him fall she let him fall–!
“Ka-Lair,” Ma says, and makes more of those quiet little hissing noises as she keeps stroking through her hair, and now down Kal’s back too even as Kara yanks him back into her lap in a panic. Kal fusses, and then starts crying too, and it’s all her fault, Kara did this, she’s awful at this, she’s supposed to be taking care of him and keeping him happy and safe and instead she let him fall, twice, and made him cry!
Ma keeps talking. Kara doesn’t understand any of the words, and even though she’s clearly trying to help, the flat, alien tones of her voice sound all wrong. There’s nothing soothing about those tones, and Kara doesn’t understand the words.
She wants to go home.
She wants home to still be there, even if she couldn’t go back to it.
Everything’s gone. Everyone is gone. It’s just her and Kal and a pair of crystals in a couple of wrecked ships.
That's all it'll ever be again.
Krypton is dead. Their family is dead. They're all that's left, and there won't ever be another Kryptonian born. Won't ever be another Kryptonian at all.
She'll never see her mother again.

Review of Season 1 of My adventures with Superman:
I just got done watching the season finale of "My Adventures with Superman." I really under-estimated this show when I saw the first teasers for it. I thought it would be a version of Superman for little kids. And though I think children can watch it, there is some very mature writing in this, the kind I haven't seen since Disney's Gargoyles. It's wholesome, well-written, and most importantly it FEELS like Superman. It's not the cynical deconstruction that Zack Snyder did with man of steel. This is the traditional boy scout version of superman, the sort of hero I'd missed. The art style resembles a Japanese anime but this show is actually American made. The movements of the characters are very fluid. There's a beauty to this animation. Superman's movements in flight are realistic and fluid. He appears like he's swimming. Some of the antagonists have changed origins and are redesigned but these don't detract from it at all. I love what they did with Jimmy Olsen, especially the nonchalant little twist they gave to his character at the end of the season finale. This is probably my favorite depiction of Jimmy Olsen in any Superman incarnation. I was relieved that the show allowed Lois (and Jimmy) to learn Clark's secret identity pretty early on (Jimmy actually figured it out first). It wasn't drawn out. I think everyone was tired of Lois not knowing Clark's secret decades ago. There is on-going story progression. And it's so wholesome, so hopeful and warm, it's strangely comforting. I hadn't seen a superhero show like this in a long time. Though I liked the mid-90s Superman animated series, this has fast become my favorite version of Superman. Neil Gaiman was right when he had said (over in Twitter when it was still Twitter) that Superman doesn't need to be changed for "modern audiences." You just need to let superman be superman in a modern setting. And that's what this show did and it works. No one is bored with the classic Superman when he is done right.
I'm not even that big of a fan of Superman (in general). But I an genuinely loving this show. It's so good.
I am not sure why Cartoon Network shows it during Adult Swim (It's adult content evening timeslot). It FEELS like a well-made version of Superman. And it's not overly mature with themes too intense for children. No, far from it. This is a GOOD version of Superman. It keeps you on your toes. The main characters like Clark, Lois, Ma and Pa Kent are all true to the cultural collective idea of who they are and yet the show is different enough that old school fans of Superman won't get bored. It'll keep you on your toes because it deviates just enough. Also people who aren't old school fans of superman should be able to follow it just fine. This cartoon was surprisingly good. And it deserves more attention. I dare say that this version of Superman has the potential to become as iconic as the 90s Batman the animated series.

I NEED some fics about Cassie and Tim subtly taking Kon and Bart to do kid things. Those boys did have a childhood AT ALL but they'd never ASK someone to do 'kid' things with them. So Cassie and Tim should be like 'I'm bored let's go to the zoo' and tbh I'd be beneficial to all of them. Take some money from Bruce and go buy like 100 stuffed animals, watch Disney movies, and just be kids. Have others cover for any hero things that come up and just have fun, They need it.

BBQ at the Kent's
Clark invites his friends over for a quiet BBQ at Ma's farm. It just doesn't go quite how he expected.
Masterlist
........................................................................
Clark had invited his closest friends and their underlings to a BBQ at Kent farm. So what if his closest friends, all happened to be from the Justice League. Kent Farm was a perfect location. It was out the way so if power mishaps it was unlikely to be observed by anyone passing by. It was a large space so could hold lots of people. Especially as his friends seemed to have a habit of collecting underlings like Pokémon, in particular Bruce. AND it wasn't Wayne manor which despite what Bruce says isn't always a relaxing place to be.
Ma was catching up with Alfred and Lois which was good, Alfred deserved a medal as well as the chance to relax. The teens and kids were mucking about/chilling in the house, and he could catch up with his colleague slash friends and relax.
What he may have miscalculated though was his little sister returning home to see Ma. She knew about him and his 'side job'. She had also, very early on, figured out his friends ‘side jobs’ too. Working it out was a breeze according to her, they weren’t particularly discrete in the beginning (according to her at least). She had covered for him and saved his bacon more times than he would willingly admit. Hell, she's covered for him to them and covered for them without them knowing. She’d provided so many alibis and removed evidence that they hadn’t thought about. The issue though, with his sister turning up, was more that THEY a) didn't know about her and b) didn't know that she knew and finally c) she could quite easily give them all a run for their money.
___________________________________
Walking into her family home she found a swarm of teens lounging around the living room. They were all chatting and talking over each other that they didn't notice her enter. Raising an eyebrow, she spotted Conner, who was currently wrapped around another boy with dark hair.
"Hey Mini Bale! Nice look you got going. Bet it's driving the old men mad and completely beats the plaid shirts and starched suits. Is Haybale out in the yard?"
Conner jumped, causing the others in the room to stop chatting, and looks to see his sort of aunt smirking at him across the room.
"Hey M, didn't know you were coming too? Yeah Clarks out back. Ummm….. why are you here?"
"This is my home too Mini Bale.” She deadpans him, “I was planning to surprise to see Ma as not visited in person for a while. I don’t need to tell Haybale every time I visit, he isn’t the boss of me.” Conner’s aunt pouted before gaining a glint in her eye, “What I wasn't expecting to see was Haybale having a "small gathering” here and not invite moi! But alas it is what it is."
The glint turning into a smug look with a dangerous edge as she took in the room.
"Auntie M!!!", the call distracted her from the room suddenly as Jon ran in from the kitchen and launched himself into a flying jump to hug with the women standing in the room. "Straw stack!! How are you doing sweetie? Made any new friends?"
While Jon dissolved into conversation with his Auntie, Tim took the opportunity to quickly assess the newly dubbed Em. She was well dressed, the sort you don't often see on farms and would be better placed in the city. Her clothes were expensive, the type he often could see board members wearing when relaxing. Even with Jon holding her attention she seemed to have clocked him studying her and nearly everyone else who was watching her interactions. Leaning into his boyfriend he queried.
"Em? Does she? Is she? Who???"
Conner chuckled at Tim's confusion, as well as the mystified faces of the others there.
"Tim, guys, I'd like to introduce you to Clark's sister, and my sorta aunt and Jon’s definite Auntie, Marinette. M for short. And before you ask Tim, no she isn’t like him. She *does* works with Max Kante in developing high tech material and gadgets since well she grew up with Clark and wanted to help him cope with his powers… She and Max created MiracuTech as a result. It’s her brainchild though really, M doesn’t really need Max."
"Mini Bale stop!! You’re dramatizing it. I need Max just as much as he needs me, our skill set complement each other. We couldn’t make half the stuff MiracuTech does without his input.” Marinette blushed, “Max says hi by the way and to tell you to pop by the office. He wants to test his new “creation” with you. Not that that offer will remain if you keep speaking of him like that. But it does remind me, how are you finding the glasses?"
It was Conner’s turn to smirk at his friends, and they could suddenly see the family resemblance in the pair.
"They're are awesome M. Like the play back function is brilliant. I've recorded so much blackmail."
His friends paused and a shiver went down their spines recalling all the incidents that have happened since Conner got his latest sunglasses.
"Fab feedback. I'll let Max know.” Taking as glance around the room, “I'm gonna take a wild guess as say Battle Barbie, Fishtails, Greedy Gonzales and Moody & Broody are out back with Haybale and Ma, Mini Bale?"
That again caused the room to freeze, being siblings with Clark kinda made sense that she would have known his identity, but for Clark to tell her about other identities was worrying. Conner tilted his head and looked at his sorta aunt as if trying to work out what she was planning.
"Yeeeeah, what are you up to M? I'm pretty sure you promised Clark you'd not cause mischief when you met everyone."
"I deny ever making that promise. I have evidence to back up that claim too. Plus, the amount of shit Haybale has caused me cos of his moral compass and lack of impulse control makes it fair game. Though I do support his altruism.” She paused debating what she would say next, “To set the record straight what I *actually* promised was that I would *consider* not causing *too much* mischief. And I have considered it and think that I'll survive this course of action. You’re not the only one with playback ability. Thanks for the info Mini Bale. Let's catch up more later!"
With that she ruffled his hair as she walked past him out to see her dear older brother.
"You've spent too much time as a cat M!" Conner called as he tried to sort out his hair. The room erupted as she left the room. Confusion, mild panic as to whether their identities were at risk and answers were demanded from Conner and Jon. Tim whined at Conner’s comment, "Cat?! We've got to keep B away from her!"
___________________________________
Out in the yard, Clark was relaxed surround by what he supposed was the founding JL members. He'd heard his sister turn up and cause subtle chaos amongst the teens in the house slowly dreading her announcing her arrival out here. Ma would be thrilled to see her. He was too, sort of. Just not in front of everyone. Kon-El was right with her spending too much time as a cat. And Tim was right as well. He'd have to keep Bruce away from her, she'd be just his latest type.
"HAY BALE! You're holding a party for little ol' me?! How delightful of you."
Clark cringed. He still hated her nickname for him.
"Lois! Ma! You both look lovely as ever! Oh, it’s been too long since I've seen you in person."
Marinette swooped past Clark to the ladies and gave them huge hugs before quickly falling into conversation to catching up with them, thankfully ignoring Clark allowing him some time to deal with his friends.
"Why is Marinette K from MiracuTech at your farm Clark?"
Barry quickly asked, staring at his sister with stars in his eyes. Ok maybe it wasn't just Bruce Clark had to worry about.
"Yes, why is the Guardian, Lady Fortune, at your home?" queried Arthur looking at Clark with confusion and slight apprehension.
"MiracuTech… Guardian," Diana quickly put together gasping, looking at Arthur who had cottoned on to her implications as well, then back at Marinette.
"Guys! Please! Cool it, M I hope," Clark quickly glared at his sister, who was grinning manically knowing the trouble she was causing for him, "can answer your questions and Barry, M, Marinette, is my sister. Why wouldn't she come here? Though this wasn't planned visit that I was aware of."
"You have a sister."
Bruce stated, as Diana and Arthur wondered off talking in hushed tones. Clark could hear that they had figured out one of her 'other' identities but was content that they wouldn't add drama for the moment he redirected his attention back to Bruce.
Clark sighed tiredly, "yes, I have a sister, Bruce. Who likes to keep her personal life private. Which is why you guys have just found out about her and not before."
"Is she Kryptonian?"
"Bruce!! you can't ask Clark that!!" Barry exclaimed, not really surprised by his bluntness but still Alfred was about, and he was ‘Bruce’ currently so social etiquettes, and all should be observed.
"What can't Moody & Broody ask Haybale, Greedy Gonzales?" Marinette enquired, a picture of planned innocence, as she snuck up on them. She gave Clark a side hug and a ‘knowing’ sibling smile.
"M… please… stop with that nickname. Bruce was just asking if you were adopted as well."
"Fine!" She rolled her eyes, "Boy Scout it is then. Moody & Broody I'm not adopted. Ma and Pa had me as a 'Surprise! you're pregnant’ a few years after they'd adopted Boy Scout here"
Bruce frowned at the names she'd been given them. While she just gave a facade of innocence, she held a glint in her eye that destroyed the illusion along with the names she was giving everyone.
Ignoring Clark and Bruce, Marinette turned to Barry to discuss his work at S.T.A.R labs and potential collaboration with MiracuTech. Clark internally groaned as he watched his sister get animated about some sort of tech project she wanted to discuss.
Bruce observed the interaction. It was clear that she knew more than she was letting on. Though he had done research on his peers to know their weaknesses and strengths, Clark having a younger sister never came up. How he had hidden her was impressive, unless it was herself who had hidden her existence from him… That was worrying causing Bruce to deepen his frown as he watched Barry and Marinette chat.
Clark joined in frowning at the pair, but because of how was Barry flirting with his BABY sister before he started to groan as it seemed to go completely over her head. She still seemed to be oblivious to those around her liking her slightly more than friendship.
"M! Ma's told you before no business talk at home."
Laughing back at him his sister nodded "We’ll have to continue this discussion another day maybe Greedy Gonzalez, when Boy Scout isn't being all boy scout-y and acting like a golden child."
Seeing an opportunity Diana butted in and 'subtly' tried to guide Marinette to where she was sitting with Arthur. "Lady Fortune, it's an honour to meet you in person. My mother has told many a tale of our mutual friends’ legacy"
"M is fine. Lady is much too formal for my liking right Ms Prince? Our friends have told me much about your mother as well Battle Barbie. But I must say I'd be more interested to hear about your curator work at the Louvre" Allowing herself to be led away.
___________________________________
Bruce gave Clark a patented batglare, "She knows." Clark rubbed his neck before back at Bruce.
"Yes. She knows. She's my sister. It's kinda hard to hide learning how to manage superpowers from family you know. It was her and Pa that helped find solutions to manage the powers. Lead glasses… her idea."
Growling at Clarks response. "She knows ours. You told her"
Taking a deep breath, "No Bruce.” Clark sighed out, praying to the god’s his sister cared for, for the patience to deal with his paranoid friend, “I didn't. She's smart. Ridiculously and stupidly smart but that's aside. She *knows* who I am. She follows my career, like I do hers. She knows who I work with, like I know who she works with. And who my friends are. The info is all there to work it out. She's also got me out of tight spots as an alibi way too often. I'm pretty sure this is opportunistic revenge for it. Especially for all she did before Lois *knew*"
"Oh god it was her calling you at the watch tower that made you pale. Not Ma Kent!!" Barry cackled, "She's the one you're scared of!!"
"Ssshhhhh Barry! Yes! She terrifies me. Much more than little sisters should. You do realise she has covered all your butts more than you think too. Remember she is a tech genius, she works *with other* tech genius’s and we, sometimes in a rush in the early days, forgot about cameras and visuals lining up."
Barry paled at that. Bruce on the other hand looked intrigued. Of course, her problem solving, and detective skills would attract him. "How long has she known?"
"Mine, since forever and never told anyone. Yours, as she has never said anything directly, I’m going to guess since we worked together the first times. I don’t really know for how long, but it’s been since the early days. You don’t need to worry though; she understands the need for secrets and how to keep them. This,” Clark says waving his hand around, “is her way to letting you know she knows without stating it. It’s definitely her subtle form of revenge on me for having to hack large corporations and delete footage or claiming that I was with her visiting so couldn’t get caught out.”
Clark turned to Bruce all serious, “Don’t antagonise or integrate her. Please Bruce! She can and will break into the Batcomputer and cause it to run slow and force your phones and alarms to only play baby shark.”
“So, she’s the one who helped you hack LexCorp to get the evidence required for your latest article”
“That’s what you got from that?! That my genius *baby* sister sometimes, might, maybe, help gather evidence to take down corrupt businessmen and politicians?! Not the fact that you shouldn’t wind her up!!”
“Well I know your tech skills aren’t up to scratch and though there was potential for Lois, it doesn’t really fit her MO so its nice to know how you truly do it. Do you think she would tell us how she hacked into JL main computer and the bat computer? Or be willing to assist in building better protection.”
Clark stared at Bruce, and was about to respond, but before he could Diana caught his eye as she knelt before M holding her hand. Stars in Diana’s eyes while Arthur looked like he was going to faint.
He groaned. Now, Diana!
His baby sister was really trying to stress him out with all the potential shovel talks he would need to make. The shimmer in her eyes when she briefly caught him looking at her suggested that she may be more aware that she was letting on. With the headache she was causing him, he would need a drink after all this.
Thankfully, before Marinette could cause more chaos with the Atlantean and Amazonian, her phone went off resulting in her slinking off to deal with what sounded like guardian issues from his eaves dropping giving what he thought was breathing room.
“Are you ok Arthur? Do I need to talk to M?” Clark enquired to his friend, hoping his sister hadn’t caused too much trauma for his friend.
“She can hold both sides of the balance and not succumb to the pressure or temptation. A true soul and so young. You let this all happen to your younger sister?”
Ok so she had caused some trauma for the Atlantean after all. He was certain it was related to the cat as well as the bug.
“Let is a strong word, Arthur. Forced is more appropriate. M is more stubborn than Bruce at times. And at 14... yeah hormonal teenage younger sister in Paris. My hand was forced.”
Diana and Arthur choked looking at Clark in horror, “14!?!?!”
Both Bruce and Barry raised an eye at him in judgement. Like they’re ones to talk with how young they let their mentees join the field.
“It is decided. She will be traveling with me to Themyscira and to Atlantis when Arthur puts on his ‘big boy pants’. She requires extra support in this matter.”
“14? Extra support? Diana, what are you talking about? She is in her 20’s not 14. You can’t kidnap Clark’s sister, Can she?”
Barry looked perplexed by the situation. Unsure on what they are talking about. She seemed to be fine and had survived years without assistance and knowing about their identities. Going to Themyscira and Atlantis would not help with that.
Staring at Clark with an unnerving intensity, Bruce answered Barry’s questions.
“She was one of the Parisian heroes. Their leader from what Diana and Arthur are suggesting. She started her extracurricular activities before even we officially did, much younger than we were and Clark didn’t stop her.”
“Oh.... Wait?! You didn’t stop her!!”
Clark was really regretting this BBQ. It was starting to feel more like an interrogation on his big brother skills, a judgement on his mentoring capability NOT a relaxing escape with friends.
“It would explain why Clark was so insistent of a some of the support protocols now,” Bruce mused. “She didn’t let you help and forced you stay away, didn’t she? Your powers, if you got akumatised, had the potential to cause a global disaster and the magic could have hurt you out of costume.”
“If you knew this, why are you giving me grief! And Diana, you can’t kidnap M. She has a support network already.”
“I didn’t. You just confirmed it. And more support can never hurt.”
Damn bat with his detective trickery and throwing his own arguments back in his face. Groaning in response Clark looked at his friends,
“Fine. You can ask but it’s HER choice no forcing it ok.”
After some grumbled agreements they all agreed.
___________________________________
“I hate you,”
“I love you too, Hay Bale.”
Marinette grinned at her brother with a cup of tea in hand. His friends had finally departed more than one had managed to get him to convince her to exchange numbers. She’d agreed to visit Diana when back in Paris to arrange a visit to Themyscira. It scared him how quickly after the initial interrogation and worry they all accepted her. She was bound to provide them so much blackmail on him. Clark was dreading his next JL meeting.
“You did this on purpose.”
“Not really. Ma knew I was visiting her this month. The fact you were here with everyone was just a perfect opportunity which I took up.”
Clark stared at his sister. None of her nervous tells were showing so wasn’t lying to him, not that she would. She hated secrets, and she carried so many with so many implications if they were revealed. As a result, she hated liars if there was not true reason for them.
“Fine. You do realise I have so many shovel talks now to dish out?”
“What?”
“Did you not see the heart eye’s Barry was giving? Or how Diana was constantly trying to get close? And once Bruce had assessed that you weren’t a threat, kept trying to engage you in conversation about detective stuff?”
“Oh, So, errr, they aren’t like that normally to friends?” A faint blush was making its way across Marinette’s cheeks. “I like wasn’t aware. Can I blame miraculous side effects?”
Clark laughed at his baby sister, yeah as clever as she was, she remained her wonderful blissfully ignorant self on flirting which he adored.
“Nah, they aren’t normally that friendly. Didn’t think you noticed and sure let’s blame the kwami, they caused some of this drama any way. I vote for Plagg and Trixx for being at fault.”

On Bruce And Texting:
Tumblr media
Author’s Note: Hello and welcome, this is my first properly written fic, originally posted to my AO3, and now that I have finally created a writing blog, it’s here as well. Please enjoy!!  AO3.  Masterlist
Warnings: Hopefully none, its all cute and fluff <3
Summary: Bruce Wayne texts like he's sending correspondences to the Queen, so of course the little monsters he calls children just have to make fun of him! Brats, the lot of them, but he wouldn't have them any other way.
Features: Bruce Wayne/Selina Kyle, all the bats and birds, mentions JL, no crime fighting, only family fluff, jokes and nods to Millennial and GenZ shenanigans.
Word Count: 2.7k
---
Billionaire, genius, tech expert, father of many children, and all around up-to-date-with-just-about-everything type of person he may be, it is also a well-known Fact that Bruce Wayne, the Batman(TM) himself, can’t text to save his life.
Whether it’s due to his Very Proper English Upbringing, his inability to be informal via written correspondences of any type, his indifference, or the fact that it bothers his children so much, Bruce Wayne has not and never will text with anything less than perfect grammar, spelling, and formality. If he has not sent you a proper letter (featuring a dedication, indentation for every paragraph, signature, and post-script when applicable), he did, in fact, not send you that text. Informality is not his Batman Way(TM) according to his children... he’s not too sure what that even means, but it makes his young ones laugh so it’s probably fine?
His oldest children (Richard and Jason) were raised in the time of Change, where computers, internet access, social media, and all things similar were only just being introduced into households en-masse. They were young enough to remember a time without such devices and connectivity (both for very different reasons, of course, but they grew up without the newest technology none-the-less). They could understand his relationship to the digital environment more so than his younger children, but they still tended to poke fun at his ‘texting blunders’ regularly. All his kids somehow ended up as brats. He doesn’t know how this happened. It’s certainly not his fault. He blames the League members, and especially Clark Kent, for their defiant personalities.
His younger children, whom he loves dearly, like to confuse him as much as they possibly can with their slang, egregious spelling errors, and all-around ‘internet humour’. He doesn’t know what ‘wig’ or ‘worm’ or ‘oof’ or anything means. He has no idea what those dances are, or how they relate to the music that seems to always accompany them, and for the love of all that is good, don’t ask him what he thinks of this or that ‘meme’. What even is a ‘meme’, and should he be more concerned about his kids being obsessed with them? He tries, oh my god, does he try to follow the children’s conversations, but they somehow all learned a language he has no idea how to decrypt. His best response to them once they start speaking in tongues is as follows: smile but not too much, listen to child even though he is deeply confused, and pat child on head or shoulder when they are finished and are looking for assurance.
He refuses to be a parent who ignores or tunes out his children, so he always makes sure to put down his work, his crossword, his tools, or whatever else is in his hands when a child searches him out for a conversation. But somehow, despite all the time he spends around them and their strange words, when he gets text from them comprised of abbreviations, acronyms, and completely random words, he goes a little cross eyed. He would never tell anyone, but he keeps a running list on his phone about the things they say that he has had to translate in the past. Spilling tea? Speaking the truth, usually to do with gossip. Wow? Multiple possible meanings: either a video game, or someone saying it (different pronunciation depending on context and who sent the text). Stickbug? A nice little prank with no ulterior motives, just for fun. Something along the lines of “this basic bitch Karen at the grocery store who is a dirty rat-licker and is def an anti-vaxxer just took 45 (forty-five) minutes to decide she didn’t actually want that almond milk. I Stan the cashier who had to put up with her. Rad af dude.” roughly translates to “A rude, middle-aged white woman who wasn’t wearing a mask and doesn’t believe in disease control or vaccinating her children wasted a great deal of an essential worker’s time in the checkout line. The cashier was very professional in their dealings with said customer and should be commended on their actions.”
Given enough time, the internet for searching up new slang words, and occasionally some help from a friend (Alfred, Selina, Lucius, another of his children, etc), Bruce could decode and respond appropriately to most texts. He was quite proud of these achievements, and although he didn’t always like how often his children were on their phones or computers or gaming systems, he was quite proud of how integrated and easily they adapted to the ever-evolving world of electronics. All his kids were gifted in many ways, but their ability to learn, their hunger for knowledge, and their perseverance when exploring new and challenging ideas were always the things that he was most impressed by.
He could do without their comments though. Yes, surprisingly, he did manage to get girlfriends with his type of texting. No, he doesn’t miss the ‘good old days’ when telegraphs were the main form of long-distance correspondence (how old do these brats think he is?!). And yes, he does know what a “tweet” is, and how to “post” on his social media accounts, and what “sliding into your DMs” is (thanks to a frantic search after a WE employee mentioned it near him). The Wayne children, truly whom and what Bruce considers his pride and joy, are cruel little jerks to him sometimes. His hoard of parenting books fails to mention what one should do when their children gang up on them. Bullying is covered of course, but he can’t really talk to a teacher or his guardian about how his second son calls him an idiot sandwich, or that his third son regularly tries to get him to do something “For The Vine”. His oldest and youngest boys are only slightly better in the bullying him department; Richard and his puppy dog eyes when he wants to do something dangerous or not-Alfred-approved, and Damian and his growing collection of pets because “Mother never let me have them, and I am deprived, and don’t you love me Father?”.
His only good child is his beautiful daughter Cassandra, the flower of the Wayne clan. She gives him hugs, and pats his hands, and can sit with him and just enjoy the quiet and stillness when his other children are not around. Her language skills are improving by leaps and bounds every day, and her heart and spirit are unparalleled, but her main method of communication is in her movements. Her hands, her posture, her dancing; Bruce couldn’t think of a more graceful, fluid, powerful person if the world depended on it. His amazing little girl doesn't bully him (and if she ever does, he probably deserves it, he trusts her), so he turns to her most of all when it comes to communicating with someone else. She doesn’t let him send anything that is “sketchy” or “wrong words, bad meaning, Dad”. He would give the world to his children, but for Cassandra, he would destroy it and build her an entirely new one.
Social media, especially with his terrible children all having accounts dedicated to making him look like a simpleton, was another rocky terrain he had to navigate on the regular. He had professionals in place at WE to run the company’s many accounts, paid top dollar to help appeal and relate to the masses, but he mostly had to manage his personal accounts himself. And so, @TheRealBruceWayne was one of the greatest struggles in his adult life. Why can’t he just retweet every post from @WE_Offical and leave it at that? People should only want to know about what’s new with the company. What do you mean they want to know more about our family and private lives? That’s unnecessary, and not important to the running of the company, right? Right? Why are you laughing?!
Luckily, most people in his life aren’t so intimately aware of his struggles. He can act and lie all he wants about being “hip” and “woke” and whatever else the kids are saying these days when he’s with the JL or in board meeting intermissions, networking with his associates. The Batman knows all and sees all, Green Lantern, of course he understands how “Tiktok” works. The Batman is a robot without a funny bone in his body, Green Arrow, but I did witness him sigh and say “same” when he knocked his cup of coffee over while on monitor duty once. No matter how badly his darling children call him out, the Justice League would be so much worse. So, it’s one of his most importantly guarded secrets... even more so than his secret identity at this point. Being unmasked in front of every Gotham rogue would be less detrimental to him than his “friends” learning of his utter ineptitude in staying on top of the younger generations’ lingo.
When questioned why the League doesn’t have a group chat or a forum or anything that they can use to contact each other outside of world ending matters and communicator (”because we’re friends, Batman! Ma and Pa Kent would love to have everyone over for a barbecue!”), the person who dared even mention texting isn’t even given a verbal response. They are just glared at, silently, often for several uninterrupted minutes, frozen in place only able to breathe shallowly in fear of setting off the Bat. “You know why” his glare says, “I’ll eat you, your family, and everything you have ever held dear” the younger members hear. No one makes the mistake of asking about it twice.
Outside of his children and Alfred, and his small circle of true friends involved in all aspects of his life, there is only one more person Bruce allows to know of his Darkest Secret. Selina. Someone most people would recommend he not be involved with. Catwoman: accomplished thief, distraction, chaos-incarnate most nights, and his significant other. Sharp as a whip (ha) and crafty like no one’s business; he is head-over-heels. On again/Off again and all over the place their long romance has been, but no one has ever challenged him, intrigued him, like this clever, beautiful, amazing woman has. He’s brought his partners around his children before, both for their judgement, and for their worst behaviours to vet out any “unworthy” suitors. He trusts them explicitly to tell him the truth about those he allows into the manor; were they rude about Bruce wanting to have group outings, did they say something about Bruce’s money, did they get angry or shout or make anyone uncomfortable while they were here? If his children even looked slightly unhappy with someone he brought them to meet, that person would not be invited back. Children, he finds, have the best sight when meeting people; no motives other than finding safety and love, no fear of consequences from speaking honestly...
Selina, or Catwoman, as they had known her first, was someone all of his kids liked without issue right off the bat. She would make puns and play word games with Richard, his first Robin, tiny, still working on his English, able to connect with him over their acrobatic abilities. His second Robin, Jason, skittish and feisty as an alley cat, knew of Catwoman and her daring escapades long before Bruce found him. The young boy had a few heroes, and no one (not even Wonder Woman) could compare to the incredible burglar who bought food and jackets and medicine for the street kids in Crime Alley. She was saintly in his eyes, and to this day, Bruce was still working on convincing Jason he was good enough for Selina. Tim and Cass and Stephanie (basically another daughter to Bruce, she spends so much time with the family) all joined the Wayne clan around the same time and officially met Selina as a friend and partner of his, and in the good graces of his first two sons. Selina, in all her nightly business, and many travels and acquaintances, had met the three independently, helping Tim get home safely back to Drake Manor when he escaped to photograph Batman and Robin in the dank darkness of Gotham when he was just a young boy, spending some time with Cassandra when her despicable father left her alone long enough to recover from his rough treatment, showing her the first scraps of kindness in her short life, and watching over and protecting Stephanie as she followed and sabotaged her father Cluemaster and his criminal activities. There was no need to win them over once they met her civilian identity, she had already gained their favour and acceptance, and they were happy to have her near their new family. Damian, his youngest, his biological son, took the longest to warm up to Selina. He would never fault his little boy for fighting so hard against a woman that was not his birth mother, especially after all the manipulation and cruelty dealt to him by Talia for the first decade of his life. But as he began to learn about his father, these people in his father’s life, and this woman that was Not His Mother but “still okay, I guess”, he grew to see her as acceptable. Her cats definitely helped, he’d say, no one with cats that loyal and happy can be a bad person.
Selina, the love of his life, he’d admit quietly to himself, was also a dirty traitor and in cahoots with his terrible children. She would say his texting skills were “sweet” and “very gentlemanly” when she was asked by anyone outside the family, and privately to him she would say she thought they were “adorable” and “please don’t ever change, Bruce, I like it.” However, nothing seemed to bring her more joy than his children sending her texts and “Snaps” and “memes” about him to her. Sometimes it was screenshots of the family group chat that they forced him to join, where he would post “To whom it may concern...” and “In regards to...” when he needed to reach all his delinquents in a timely manner. Sometimes it was video clips of him staring at his phone intently, then typing something on his laptop, then him reading and nodding along, and then finally going back and responding to the text he received with a small, pleased smile. And sometimes, when he got too injured or was too incapacitated to text coherently, he’d have his nearest able child transcribe his text to her. Depending on who was texting her for Bruce, she could expect many different things. From Dick, she’d get lots of shorthand and silly emojis, and many, many, winky and crying/laughing faces in brackets depending on what Bruce had made him type. Jason, bless him, used proper English most of the time, but would never write a single word of Bruce’s soliloquy to her, instead she enjoyed the TL;DR version: “hurt again, missing you, come home soon, blah blah blah, sappy gross words here, love you”. Tim would allow speech recognition to run on Bruce’s phone, and just let it go until the man passed out. Stephanie, the little chaos child, would film it and send it to her, including all her muffled laughter and shaky camera shots of Bruce emoting with his available undamaged limbs. Cass, still more versed in physicality and emotive movement, would interpret Bruce’s text into mostly emojis, hearts and happy faces and animals, but would include photos, and phrases that she found important enough to type out for Selina. Damian, forever his Father’s son in any way possible, texts very formally, referring to her or his siblings Bruce mentions by last name only, and lots of “Father requests me to tell you...” and “Kyle, know that Father...”. She adores these kids, and once Bruce recovers enough to text her himself, or she gets back to the Manor, they get to laugh about whatever she was sent this time.
So, while it’s true that Bruce couldn’t text his way out of a wet paper bag, and his kids are sometimes brats about it, there’s probably a lot of different reasons he doesn’t spend too much time trying to improve his skills. Whether it’s the smiles of his children, the giggles of his significant other, or the warm feeling in his chest when he sees all his important people bonding over him, well, in the end, who’s to say?

RP Headcanons: DC Edition, pt 1
Batfam
Bruce cares, tries, and fails, but generally keeps trying for his kids.
Baby Terry McGinnis is the cutest thing ever and his dinosaur t-shirts reinforce this.
Slade Wilson - terrible person, great assassin, loving (if strict) parent.
Dick and Bruce fight constantly! Once Dick gets mad about something, everything makes him more angry until he and Bruce eventually resolve the first problem. It's sometimes big stuff... sometimes really petty shit.
Steph loves waffles. She will trade Tim for a 4-stack with chocolate chips.
Everybody wants to pair with Bruce on Gotham patrols. He gets the best fights and he brings snacks in the belt - it's a 50/50 if it's protein bars or trail mix, though.
Nobody wants to pair with Bruce on Gotham patrols. He won't let you make Social Media posts or stop for a hotdog at Rico's corner stand.
Jason and Dick actually fight a lot, still. Jason knows how to push Dick's buttons and he uses that as a self-defense tactic when he doesn't want to talk. ("Get Dick mad and he won't ask if I'm okay!")
Cass loved Steph before Steph loved Cass. Stephanie figured it out... eventually.
Lucius Fox only helps with the really weird shit because Bruce trades him Alfred's secret holiday recipes sometimes. Alfred's recipes are the true treasures of Earth.
Duke does his best not to get swept up in the weird, wild lives of his batsiblings tbh.
Tim doesn't babysit, he gets babysat.
Ace is the Good Boy™ but he will try and take Krypto down.
Titus is trained, we swear, but he's goofier than a ferret on drugs sometimes. 10/10 derp.
Sometimes Dami gives Batcow walks through the garden to help her relax.
Every Batfam member will stab the other for the last piece of Ma Kent's apple pie. Even Alfred.
Superfam
90s Kon and YJ Kon both deserve to exist. What better combo than the Insta-famous, outgoing showboat and the blunt, introverted buffbaby?
YJ Kon is way more of a "Conner" than 90s Kon. 90s Con is now "Carter."
Carter + Tim = Flashy Disaster Couple
Conner likes Wally's freckles.
Ma and Pa Kent accept any and all grandkids, time-travel or dimension-hopping be damned because "They're our boys, now, Clark, of course we want to see them!", and there are family trips to the farm.
Clark will bribe his friends and teammates with his mother's cooking. He can't bribe with his own, though, because he's terrible at it.
Jon would happily fly to Gotham for dinner before eating what his father burned made for them.
Krypto would probably go, too.
Clark doesn't know what to do with all of his sons but at least they aren't like his cousins.
"It's not about whether the boob window would look good or not, guys! It isn't happening!" is still something he's had to say before, though, and Clark's mildly ashamed of it.
With three superboys up to bat, the real issue is that none of them want to share the name. Jon had it first and that's fine with his brothers, really. Conner looks and feels like practically an adult, so he's meh about it. Carter wants something catchier to say. The result? Superboy, Kon and Rao.
Jor-El had a conniption when Carter named himself "Rao" as a hero. "You named yourself after OUR GOD?!? You disrespectful little-!"
Lex thought it was hilarious.
The boys are constantly in the background of Carter's posts and there's a few Insta vids of Lex trying and failing to hide that he's mildly amused by his son's shenanigans.
Flashfam
Barry is face-blind (has prosopagnosia). He can gradually memorize specific elements of a person's face ("Uh... Ollie's hair is like mine, right? So he's blond! And I know he has facial hair.") but has trouble associating them together unless he's had long periods of exposure to the person.
Wally is a nervous bundle of anxiety. All of the time.
Barry is practically incapable of looking on the dark side of things, and tends to believe the best of people - this extends to his villains.
Cisco is his bro, Caitlin is like the ditzy aunt, and Harrison is the exasperated father-figure that just wishes his kids didn't drink so much coffee.
Speaking of coffee - Barry doesn't drink it on the job. It makes him antsy.
Captain Boomerang - Digger, to his friends - is always on the edge of getting out of the game. Raising Owen ("Little Diggs") is a higher priority than his Rogues work. He waivers between retirement and always that "last" job that'll set him up to take care of his son.
Little Diggs is too pure for this world, and a fan of Flash even though he knows his father is a villain.
Wally isn't as forgiving with the Rogues as Barry is. This is especially true for Heatwave, Glider and Cold, since they've all double-crossed the Flash before.
Cold isn't fond of Kid Flash. Barry earns his respect and, in some ways, his admiration - this doesn't extend to Flash's smartassed sidekick.
Lisa and Mick are a surprisingly functional duo despite their dysfunctional dynamic. Lisa is generally in charge in their relationship, and Mick knows Len would ice him if he ever raised a hand to Lisa.
Len and Mick are best friends, despite the friction from their clashing personalities.
Lisa keeps pushing Len to either date or pick a favorite hooker - anything to get him laid and chilled out for once.
Len is practically addicted to puns. Not even just cold- or ice-related puns, either! He will make puns out of anything when given an opportunity, and genuinely is amused by them.
Arrowfam
Oliver is never in control of his daily life. He's barely in control of his personal choices most of the time.
Felicity runs it all - the team, the company, organizing his assignments from the League... everything other than doing the hard stuff herself.
Ollie really is a capable hero, but he doesn't believe it. He also doesn't particularly believe that the League needs or wants him there, but couldn't tell you why exactly they keep him, then, if questioned about it.
Roy has totally given up the flash and mystique of heroism tbh. Trucker hat? Check. Bow, arrows, and backup guns? Check. Flip-flops? All the better to chase people with. The slapslapslap of justice will strike terror in the hearts of muggers everywhere.
Oliver spoils Lian relentlessly.
Artemis is glad to avoid the weird shit that Roy and his clones get up to when Ollie isn't paying attention. She's never been more thankful that she isn't one of the adopted sidekicks.
Jim: Big, friendly, easily guilt-tripped, the pretty one.
Will: Mature, down-to-earth, does the guilt-tripping, the mom/dad friend.
Roy: Trash, amger!!!, can't be guilt-tripped but can be blackmailed, has no clue what he wants in life yet.
Lian will either murder you in your sleep or you are now a member of her family. There is no in-between.
No pets. Ever. They will get shot with an arrow by accident and nobody in the house is willing to deal with that emotional burden.
Oliver wants exactly 0 people in the "Arrowfam" but will kill you and/or himself over losing any member of his Arrowfam.

Action Comics #1022 Review
“The House of Kent: Part 1″
Starting off, we have the 9-panel grid. Because Tom King likes to use it to show off that he read Watchmen (before promptly abusing the layout to death), everyone and their mother has been scrambling to shove it somewhere in their work and try to get a useless amount of perceived street cred to show that they too had read Watchmen (killing the layout even more). Since it’s all the rage, Bendis does it here.
Tumblr media
I actually like the third panel. As Stan Lee said, every comic is someone’s first comic (and this is the first chapter in a “highly” anticipated arc). Instead of an editor’s note, Bendis explains Kelex through dialogue that is expositional but not unnatural or clunky. But why explain Kelex of all things? My answer is well, why not? Supposedly, Conner is as unformed about a lot of things as is a potential new reader and Superman informs him in a manner that is not entirely out place, even to current readers.
Then Conner explains his origin and touches upon the fact that we’ve had a few different continuities since his creation in 1993. He is excited and curious in the first four panels and then immediately deflates in the last four. I think Bendis is trying to have the best of both worlds by writing both an excited Conner (something that fans are supposed to respond positively towards) and a depressed Conner (because he has been a victim of the discontinuity perpetuated by DC editorial and made no better by Bendis).
Tumblr media
We get a double-page splash of the two Kents conversing that I like, especially the color of the Fortress. The conversation is very Bendis, but not offensively so. It serves its purpose, can’t be too upset about that. He tries to depict Conner as nervous, but I really hate how it’s done, it’s like reading an accent phonetically.
Tumblr media
uwu what’s this? A fundamental misunderstanding and misinterpretation of a character? In my Bendis book? It’s more likely than you think.
Conner has literally never been little. He was created as a teenage clone of Superman and he stayed a teenage clone of Superman. He came out the test tube the punk Metropolis Kid, not the toddling Metropolis Tyke. A really big conceit of his character is that he will never look older or younger than a teenager. That’s why a lot of eyebrows were raised when in his first reappearance Bendis chose to depict him with stubble.
Tumblr media
Another example of Bendis-speak that is fun and full of charm and character, but the characterization for the characters who are conversing is just…off. It’s a conversation these types of characters would have, just not these characters specifically.
Tumblr media
You know, for a character that supposedly Bendis hates and wants to write off and make inaccessible to all other writers and artists, he sure writes about Jon a lot. Bendis forces Jon into the future, cutting him off not just from everything he knows and loves, but from, more importantly, the readers. This reinforces the gravity and seriousness of him being written off, but Bendis constantly undermines this hostage situation of his own creation by having him come back to the present quite often. You put characters on a bus to make them go away forever, but the bus keeps returning to the station. And the most baffling part? You’re the driver, Bendis! Commit to the fucking bit!
Tumblr media
Jon and Braniac 5 are chumming it up, because they are toooooootally buddies, you can read alllllll about Jon’s actual, very real, and totally not non-existent friendships with the Legionnaires in Legion of Super-Heroes by Brian Michael Bendis and Ryan Sook, because Jon totally has finished watching the Legion orientation film that totally didn’t take more than 5 issues to even get him to watch and he wasn’t even interrupted once. The book is soooooo well developed and evenly paced and not at alllllll bloated behind belief.
Tumblr media
Jon acts like he came home from college to do laundry and eat some home cooking and forgot to call ahead, like he totally isn’t supposed to stay in the future.
Tumblr media
Me, too, Conner. I don’t know who this character is either.
We also get to see his new costume here, which I hate. The one positive thing I could say about this new character when he was first introduced in Bendis’ Superman run was that I really liked his costume. It had the cyber-armor look of the New 52 Superman suit, but wasn’t too over-designed. It worked, it looked cool. This new look is just kinda bleh. It has the ugliness of the New 52 with none of the intricacies that made it look cool and unique.
Tumblr media
We were never going to any meeting between the two Superboys that can even remotely be called good or worthwhile. I appreciate the naiveté of certain fans who enjoy things at face value because, factually, they got what they wanted. Fans wanted this meeting and they got it, which will make the happy, but it is not at all satisfying, which is what they should care about.
Bendis has a firm understanding of Superman and his voice. The same cannot be for Jon Kent. This character is not Jon Kent. He is not written out of character because this is not his character. What we got here is not what we wanted. This is Bendis and DC editorial banking that fans will rationalize to themselves that the crumbs they deigned to give fans is actually a feast worthy of praise and exaltation (look no further than Superman #16).
Oh and by the way, this is all we get for the meeting. The rest of the issue is “wHaT’S ThE DeAl cOnNeR KeNt?”
I’m skipping over the Daily Planet stuff because I don’t care about it and it doesn’t piss me off.
Instead, I will quickly address this: “The rumor come out, does Jonathan Kent is gay?”
I want to say this came about because Jon called Conner’s leather jacket “fabulous”, but it seems this idea existed before this issue was even released. The most I can find in relation to Jon being gay is this article written 2016 and this funny little exchange in the comments of one of Bendis’ Instagram posts.
I knew I was not straight when I was in grade school and it would be amazing if such a high profile character like Jon came out. It would normalize the idea that being gay isn’t something exclusively sexual or adult, but that there is nothing wrong for kids to have feelings for someone their own age who is the same sex. But I don’t trust DC to even attempt this. If they can’t even make Dick Grayson bi, then it’s not likely for any other character to come out.
And just because he described something as “fabulous”, that doesn’t make him gay. It’s an odd choice of words, sure, but word choice is no real indication of sexuality. In an interview with ComicPOP, Todd McFarlane described a box for a figure as “sexy” and “sassy” that I might have instead referred to as “cool” or “awesome.” I think Todd’s word choice is oddly fitting, but it was not something I would have thought to use before hearing him use it in the interview, and it does not at all call into his sexuality. I have a similar sentiment about “fabulous.”
Tumblr media
Back to the story, Superman takes Conner to meet some of the intellectual experts in the DC universe to help figure out his deal. They have some “fun” Bendis dialogue and touch upon the multiverse and continuity that Bendis has been helping shape even though he literally has never worked for DC until very recently, relatively speakingm and yet is being trusted with the word “crisis.”  And what do you mean you’ve been rebooted at least three times, I thought it was seven times according to Young Justice #1, one of the first issues Bendis wrote for DC.
I saw a Reddit post a little while back that compiled clues and subtle hints that were spread out among several titles, including Tom King, Scott Snynder, and Bendis’ various books, that tied them all together with Doomsday Clock. It demonstrated a remarkable amount of coordination that I thought impossible given who it involved, but the evidence was pretty convincing. However, this was before Dan Didio was fired and they were able to avert 5G. Now that they’ve had time to regroup, I think this issue is sowing some more of those seeds that’ll eventually be dealt with by Synder’s Death Metal.
Tumblr media
Here’s some more of that fundamental misunderstanding and misinterpretation of a character. Conner was not “raised” by the Kents. They cared for him, sure, but I wouldn’t call what they did raising.
What is being referred to here is Geoff Johns’ run with Conner Kent in Adventure Comics which took place in 2009. What that contributed to the character was only a relatively recent development in Conner’s history. It should be noted he started living with the Kents in 2002. His solo book was cancelled with Connor being dropped off by Clark at his parent’s house on the very last page. Any sort of “raising” would have occurred off panel during that time and is largely not expanded upon because there was literally no book to depict that kind of relationship until after he had died in 2006 and was brought back in 2009. They are not the sole contributors to his life like it is implied here. He lived in Hawaii and worked for Cadmus for far longer than he lived with the Kents.
Tumblr media
And here we have Jon casually referring to Ma and Pa Kent as Grandma and Grandpa like he actually knew them instead of just knowing of them. For those of you don’t know, they were dead when Tomasi and Gleason were writing Superman and were only just recently brought back in Doomsday Clock which concluded well after Tomasi and Gleason had left the book, so Jon never met them. At the absolute most he’s heard stories, looked at pictures, and seen home movies of the Kents. You could say I’m nitpicking, but Bendis deserves it. You can feel his disregard for others’ work throughout his other books, and its panels like this that are the proof.
Tumblr media
Jon literally has no reason to know that Ma and Pa Kent are alive. No reason. Jon’s smug face is Bendis’ way of say “Aren’t I a stinker?”
Tumblr media
Fuck. You. Bendis.
You do not get to pretend that stories you made impossible to tell of Jon spending time with his grandparents actually did happen. Is this interaction cute and fun and a little bit wholesome? Yes. But is it genuine? Absolutely not. He’s just trying to cash in on what he thinks fans want to see with none of the heart and soul.
And now Clark is acting like Jon is visiting from college.
Tumblr media
Piss your pants, Bendis. Jon would never refer to his best friend Damian Wayne like that. If someone else referred to Damian like that when Jon was around, he would correct them and say something along the lines of “He’s not so bad once you get to know him.” Stop pushing the narrative that Damian is some sort of demon hellspawn or psycho killer. He’s a flawed kid with a dark past that wants to be better but struggles with it and needs friends like Jon to support him. This continues to show that Bendis literally does not understand this character and why fans get upset when he writes him this way.
Tumblr media
Another 9-panel grid, but this is not Tom King-inspired, but actually befitting the moment. Bendis still think Conner was literally raised by the Kents instead of just living with them, but I really have no skin the game of Conner being recognized as a part of the Kent family, so this doesn’t piss me off much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I know this is supposed to be emotional because they just reunited, but the dialogue seems to suggest something more ominous and insidious is going on, something bigger than any one of them (Crisis, I know, but its kind of obnoxiously on the nose and yet unnecessarily vague).
The issue actually ends with the story I don’t really care about, so that’s the review.
Note: I realized about part way through writing this post how pissy and whiny I might sound, but I spent too much writing it to not post it.

Hi! May I ask what is your opinion on the current Superman Rebirth/Reborn: to have Superman marry Lois Lane and second, give Superman a kid— Jon Kent. Thank You.
For the first two points: the whole Rebirth/Reborn era has been consistently weak and often actively awful across the board in terms of actual technical execution (at least as far as the writing goes; plenty of excellent art in the mix between the likes of Gleason, Mahnke, Jimenez, and Bogdanovic), but builds a perfectly serviceable baseline and status quo for creators who know what the hell they’re doing to build on whenever the guard finally changes, and I’m entirely in favor of Lois and Clark being married. For that last part…well, that’s what it’s really all about right now, isn’t it?
Tumblr media
I’ve mentioned this once or twice before, but it really is worth reflecting how nuts Jon’s entire existence is. Superman and Lois Lane have a kid now. A no-fooling son who is Superboy. Not a hoax, dream, or imaginary tale, and in fact with Reborn DC’s doubled down on him being Superman’s Very Official Real Kid Forever Now. Even Batman had family sometimes portrayed as his children before, and his biological kid was specifically framed in the light of being dropped in his lap at 10, but Jon had to be an ancillary side-effect of a failed event slipping through due to Superman editorial’s failings, because “also they’ve had a kid for awhile now” isn’t the sort of thing that’d ever be retroactively slotted in via a normal reboot. Regardless of how he came about though, I’m absolutely willing to call Jon the best idea to hit Superman since at least Morrison folding back in the Golden Age adventures, and very possibly since Lois and Clark getting married in the first place.
Firstly, there’s just that the kid already has a distinct personality. Not without kinks - most books seem to still be writing him pretty generically, and even his creator Dan Jurgens exclusively portrays him as a grab-bag of generic traits for how a middle-aged man would think a 10 year old would speak and act in the 21st century - but for all his many shortcomings as a writer, one thing Peter Tomasi certainly has going for him is that he’s really good at writing kids. So whether bouncing off his dad or Damian, he’s both fun and a character who makes sense given he’s essentially tiny Superman as raised by Superman and Lois Lane: he’s got all of his dad’s optimism and exuberance, but because he’s as open and outgoing as his mom he doesn’t reign it in to dignified, stately charisma; he’s just a goofy upbeat kid. He’s got their collective temper too, and his mom’s unwillingness to let go of a lead, and that El Family sense of wonder at the universe. He’s easy to like and root for, and you can absolutely see how he came about as the product of that household.
What hasn’t been dug up nearly as much yet is the purely thematic, conceptual side of him, which is as rich a seam as it gets. On his mom’s side, there’s this blunt, adventurous woman who’s never had the slightest issue throwing herself into the most intense danger imaginable for the sake of a story having to take physical and emotional responsibility for a dumb, tiny little human who’s going to grow up to be the next Superman, and having to figure out pretty much from scratch and secondhand experience how to make a stable homelife happen after spending her own childhood moving from one army base to another under her asshole dad. With Clark, there’s after all these years of unconsciously isolating himself finally another being in the universe who could possibly understand what it’s like to grow up a Kryptonian on Earth…except it’s his kid who thinks he’s God because he didn’t learn he was Superman until he was old enough to know what that means.
He’s a second-generation immigrant kid, he’s the Silver Age Superman reared by the original (he was Superboy in a small town alongside Krypto under his Ma and Pa and is growing up in an actively weirder world and a little more open about his hopes and fears), he’s the Nightwing to Clark’s Batman in that he’s being raised by him to not have the same issues but there’s a question as a result of if he’ll have the same drive, he’s a little Superman who can make mistakes and struggle, he’ll pretty much be a celebrity kid once the world at large realizes why he’s wearing the S, he has an entire world of relationships to build defined by others’ own relationships with his parents, he has potential brain/brawn partnership with his mom given she’s been doing this longer than he has, he can see all the craziness of the DCU through fresh eyes, you can do stuff with him once he grows up and becomes Superman II, and on and on and on. There’s just so much that you can do with him, and while he’s also already taking after his parents in that no one seems interested in doing any of it, he’s a goldmine as a sidekick (what if your dad was Superman?!) and as a permutation of the Superman concept in general, a logical continuation of basically every version of Superman that’s come before (he’s the scrapper the Golden Age guy was, his existence owns up to the domestic nature of the Silver Age and recaptures some elements of that actual Superman the current guy doesn’t, he’s the inevitable endpoint of the soap opera stuff), and something that feels like a natural part of that world. I sure hope he’s taken the places he deserves to go.

(Also, can we ditch him accidentally flash-frying a cat? That was an unbelievably weird way of getting off on the wrong foot with his debut to the superbooks proper, and I don’t think anyone would much complain if it was abandoned. Hopefully Reborn already silently took it off the board)

Give us a bulletpoint outline for what your character’s history might look like:
Home planet of Krypton destroyed, Kal’s parents Lara and Jor-El we’re scientists who saw the coming destruction but ultimately were not listened to by their people or the council of Krypton. In a last ditch effort, they sent away their newborn son in a small space capsule pre-programmed to Earth’s coordinates. Knowing Kal would grow stronger and more powerful there than the home population. Hoping to ease the burden of him being an outcast since he’d be a “god to them”.
He crash landed in a field in Kansas, near the small rural town of Smallville. Adopted by Martha and Jonathan Kent, a couple previously unable to conceive and praying for a miracle child. Kal, who they named Clark, was their miracle. Martha quick and stubborn enough to easily convince Jonathan that instead of calling anyone, especially the government, they needed to protect this child. Hide the evidence that he came from space.
It soon became evident as Clark grew that he was far from normal. A toddler lifting furniture, never getting sick, thankfully to worrisome parents, unable to be harmed.
In early elementary school aged, Clark had his first accidental flight. Shooting through the roof of their farm home and in a panic Martha grabbed on to his ankle, propelling them both up. It’s only when she nearly slipped and fell that Clark managed to get more of a handle on himself. Her talking him into attempting to get them to move down, only resulting them both dropping. Luckily no one was seriously injured. Next instance with flight had him stuck hoovering above their fields. Jonathan enlisting the help of a neighbor with a small plane to swoop over and retrieve their son. Spurring some cuter moments of trial and error between the father and son until Clark learned to have a better grip on this particular ability.
He had a near idyllic childhood, parents who loved and supported him, space to run and roam and grow on the farm. But was haunted by his differences and the secrets he had to keep about them. The feeling of being so alien compared to the rest. But after lashing out on a mirror in a drive in, his father’s speech on “not being a jerk” hit home deep in Clark. Someone had put the effort and work into making that mirror, delivering it, hanging it up. And he’d destroyed it and a wall in a matter of a second. He didn’t want to be a jerk. Even if he was sort of miserable.
As a teenager, a string of brutal murders took place in Smallville. A good handful in the town new that Clark was special, and applying that small pressure for him to find the culprits, to help, weighed on him. But when he’d found where they were, Clark didn’t go to the police with the information. He showed up himself instead. A confrontation that ended in him for the most part accidentally melting the arms off one of the criminals. Three criminals were put in intensive care, describing their attacker as “a demon with red eyes”.
Shortly after highschool, Clark won a free plane ride. Taking it as a chance to finally get out of Smallville and “spread his wings” a bit. The plane crash landed in the ocean near a party boat of Bruce Wayne’s. Only Bruce wasn’t on board and Clark was quickly mistaken for the elusive birthday billionaire. Slipping into the role for a weekend trip until they docked, Clark met and mingled with a gaggle of ‘Bruce Wayne’s fake friends’ one even being Oliver Queen. Having a brief (and drugged) encounter with Deathstroke before slipping away once they made landfall.
In college, Clark was accepted into an internship at the Daily Planet. Their first challenge assignment being a summit meeting of Bruce Wayne, Oliver Queen and Alexander Luthor. He scored inside scoop interviews with Queen, Luthor and Bruce Wayne’s then young ward, Dick Grayson. Being inspired in a multitude of ways to really step up in the world. As well as discovering Batman’s secret identity…and stealing his cape. Teaming up with Lois Lane and her exclusive on Bruce Wayne to write a Global headline
Superman’s first major appearance / superhero adventures clad in an acquired batman cape, goggles, helmet and a House of El painted bullet-proof vest. A vest that didn’t fool Lois Lane. Clark had his first notable bad run in with Parasite, who when thrust into the bay shrunk back to a man that muttered one thing “Lex Luthor” spurring a tension filled interaction that would set the tone for his future relationship with the cooperate powerhouse and arch-nemesis.
It wasn’t until he was 24 that Clark ever heard the word Krypton. Flying out into space after an argument with some friends, he was picked up by some members of the Green Lantern Corps. They didn’t give him anymore information outside of that. Later, when a space mercenary, Lobo came into town was when Clark finally discovered more about his home planet and true origins. As well as showcasing the true extend of his strength and powers to the world. Thereby solidifying himself as a Global figure and hero.
Justice League formed in order take on a greater threat to mankind (Darkseid?) Superman spends his days busy juggling his duties as Superman and maintaining his career as a journalist for the Daily Planet.
Interview (Must be answered in character, third person, including both narrative and dialogue. Answer these as if you’re responding to a roleplay reply. Feel free to write as much as you like, but make sure there’s at least a good paragraph for each.)
What would it take for you to switch sides? (hero to villain; villain to hero; neutral to either) “No.” Sound. Resolute. He had to be. “As long as there is life in my body, i will try and do what i feel is right. I owe it to humanity. To be their beacon.” The shine of the alien fabrics catching light on his symbol. It’s more than just an S. “But more importantly, i owe it to my parents. Both sets. To help shape and be apart of a better world, one that won’t fall victim to Krypton’s many mistakes. And to be the good person Ma and Pa raised me to be.” Clark cleared his throat, trying to distract from the strong and seeping emotion he felt when thinking of his parents. His birth planet. His home here on Earth.
How would you describe yourself? How would your friends describe you? How would the public describe you? “It depends on who in the world you ask. But i like to think that most are able to see what i do for what it is. To look over the ‘what ifs’ and see me for my actions. The world may not always agree with me, and i may not always see the clearest picture for what it is. But I will *always* do my best. For truth and justice. For the little guy.  Like it or not, i’m a symbol for something bigger than just one man could ever be.” He distantly realized he wasn’t looking anywhere in particular anymore. Lost in his own answer. In trying to layer it with as much of his truth as possible. Blinking and a soft smile as he came back. “As for my friends? Well they’ll call me a big caped idiot. A boy scout. A dangerous one at that.” a lightness of his features while he thought of Bruce. As much as the man and his darkness, the depths of it, scared him. He was also a quiet  inspiration. And an ease to his mind. Someone to keep him in check should Clark ever lose sight of what was right. “I seem to recall being called an obnoxiously caped loser in good nature a time or two. And myself? Well i’m just..i’m just a man with a lot a free time, trying to do one good deed a day.”
If you could gain any superpower/swap your superpower for another, what would it be and why? Clark looked down at his hands at this question. Wasn’t sure what to say. He had all the power anyone could want. And well, most of his life he hadn’t necessarily wanted them. Growing up, what he wanted most? Was just to a regular kid. *Normal.* But he was expected to answer. And as a member of the press himself, he knew how frustrating it could be when someone glossed over your questions. “I think.. I think i’d want Diana’s badassery. Does that count?” A small, apologetic smile.
What is a secret you have never told someone? If there was one choice in your past you could change, what would it be? What should he say here? A secret he’s told no one. Not his identity, a good handful of people know. That feeling he remembered all too well, how close he’s come to doing what was easy instead of what was right. To crumbling under the weight of everything awful he’s seen in this world. In others. That dangerous notion of taking matters into hand in a way that no person should. He just stared back down at hands again. The power, strength he knew was behind just about every cell in his body. *I never asked for all this.* “A secret? Sometimes..in dark moments, I worry that Luthor and others were right. That my being here and standing up so boldly only further inspired some of destruction and villains we see today.” A choice in his past to change. *Maybe..maybe working more with the police during the hostage situation in smallville. The way he permanently scarred those men*. But they had deserved it. Perhaps underestimating Luthor. Barging in hot headed when he should have thought things through. “We all make mistakes. All anyone can do is learn from them and look forward.”
If you had one day where you could do anything you want, free of consequences, what would you do? Clark gave a longing sigh. A happy look as he contemplated that. “I think i’d take Lois out, someplace nice. Quiet. And we’d be able to relax. Maybe a bubble bath and a book. Resting easy without worrying about well, the weight of the world. League responsibilities. Super-villains and alien invasions. To just be able to be a regular guy for a day. Now that sounds nice."
