"tell me again why we need to drop by harrington's" eddie asked with a bit of annoyance
you chuckled at his attitude and continued to flip through the new magazine robin bought that you asked to borrow
"because i left my science textbook at school and was sick the day i needed to bring it home and steve has a copy i can borrow since we're in the same class" you explained nonchalantly
to be honest, you kinda liked the fact he was kinda jealous over you and steve's friendship, it meant he cared, not just about you but about your relationship
but you also knew that he was smart enough to know that you are his and no one else's
"can't you just miss one assignment? i'm sure miss whoever teacher is won't care" eddie said, crawling into your bed next to you and pulling you into his arms causing a giggle to emit from your lips and you held onto the magazine
"it's mr. peters, you know that, babe you had him last year" you squealed as you felt his hands move down your sides
"oh did i? i can't remember i was too busy watching your gym class outside" he said in a flirtatious tone, kissing your neck
"that sounds just a tad creepy" you told him and he laughed
"well i meant that it a bit distracting to pay attention to his boring lectures when you were outside on the track running in those shorts" he said again, and pressed a kiss to the side of your collarbone
"well i don't have the luxury of staring off while he's talking about gametes and zygotes" you laugh, pushing your self up and attempting to leave eddie's firm grasp
"oh honey you don't have to make up words to cover up the fact you're thinking about me in class" he said with a hint of surliness in his voice, propping himself up on one elbow as he watch you roll off the bed and start to slip on your pants
"eds cmon, seriously i need to get that textbook so i can pass this stupid assignment so i know the answers to the stupid quiz we have to take" you told him with a huff after you finished putting on your jeans and throwing your sweater over your t shirt
"okay babe, but we're stopping to get burgers on the way home since i'm starving" he said throwing his dio shirt over his very beautiful physique
"sounds like a perfect plan" you said with a smile as he walked over and kissed you before he grabbed his keys and started to walk to his shoes
"you know i had been craving a chocolate milkshake so i'm very excited" you told him as you put on your shoes
"wow it's like we've been together for almost a year and we know each other a little too well to the point where we can practically read each others minds" eddie said with a sarcastic smirk and you playfully rolled your eyes
"wow really i hadn't known" you replied back with a mocking tone
the two of you walked out to eddie's van parked in the drive way and got in, and he started the engine
the radio came on at full volume causing the two of you to jump as eddie quickly turned it down, forgetting that he left it on last night on his drive over to your house
"jesus sorry about that" eddie said with wide eyes as he started to drive
"it's okay" you giggled, your heart finally calming down
the two of you drove to steve's house which took at least a good 10 minutes
before you knew it, you were pulling into steve's driveway
the last time you and steve talked you told him you'd be over at 6 to get his spare copy of the textbook and you hoped he didn't forget, but seeing his car in the driveway put your worry at ease
eddie put the car in park and you looked at him with soft eyes, "thank you for driving" you said sweetly, as you put your hand on his cheek and it looked like he was going to melt under your touch
"always babe" he said with a soft smile back
he kissed you softly and slowly, leaving a permanent smile on your face as you exited his car and walked to steve's front door
you knocked a couple of times but had no answer, you looked back to see eddie fiddling with some magazine he had laying in the car and noticed steve's car was the only one in his driveway besides eddie's
you heard music coming from inside so you knew he was home and decided to head in, yelling a "hello!", hoping he would hear you over the music
you walked up the stairs and went down the hall to where steve's room was located
the familiar tune of 'jessie's girl' rang through his speakers and the shower running, with steve's voice coming through his bathroom door
you headed into his room, immediately seeing the book on his desk and you figured you'd leave him a quick note and take the book so you can get home and start studying as soon as possible
you started to turn down the speakers so you wouldn't go deaf when suddenly you heard steve belting out to the song but as you started to giggle you heard him change the original lyrics
"Cause she's watching him with those eyes
And she's loving him with that body, I just know it
And he's holding her in his arms late, late at night
You know, I wish that I had
Eddie's girl
I wish that I had Eddie's girl
Where can I find a woman like that?
Like Eddie's girl
I wish that I had Eddie's girl
Where can I find a woman-
Where can I find a woman like that?"
if it was any other song, hearing his voice crack while attempting to scream out the notes would've made you laugh and you definitely would've made fun of him with it but you stood there baffled
that was until the shower cut off and you heard movement on the other side of the door, and you quickly picked up one of his pens and started writing on a note pad
steve opened up the door to the bathroom and saw you standing at his desk, hunched over scribbling away
"oh shit hey" he said, padding over to his dresser to grab some clothes, his towel hanging low around his waist
you turned to steve, trying to keep your cool
"oh hey, sorry you didn't hear me knock so i let myself in and i was just going to leave you a note and take the book cause i really have to get to studying" you admitted, putting the pen down
he nodded and you picked up the book, folding yours arms around it and pressing it against your chest
"you know your speakers are very loud" you said in an effort to break the tension and steve chuckled
"yeah well i gotta hear it through the door" he smiled and you nodded
"well i better get going, eddie's waiting for me" you admitted and he nodded
"eddie's here?" he questioned
"yeah he drove me over, we're going to study tonight" you told him and you could see an expression in his eye shift, but you couldn't see to what
it was almost a mix of jealously and sadness but you didn't want to jump to conclusions
"oh well good luck with your studying, i don't want to keep you waiting too long" he said with a small smile and you nodded
"thank you again steve, you're the best" you told him with a small smile and headed out of his room, down the stairs and back to eddie's van
he noticed you walking and threw whatever magazine he had in his hand and tossed it behind him, starting the car back up as you hopped into the passenger seat
"got it?" he asked as he started to reverse
"yep!" you told him as you fixed your seatbelt
"good, now my smart babe can study to be even smarter" he said with a smile as he started back to your house
the drive was a little too quiet for eddie's liking but to be fair, you were thinking about steve and the fact he was singing about you?
you'd never thought of steve in that way and didn't know how to feel if it's true that he does like you
"everything okay pretty girl?" eddie asked, gently putting his hand on your thigh and you moved to look at him, nodding
"yeah just tired, maybe you and i can skip studying and just cuddle?" you asked and he smiled
"of course baby" he said, sliding his hand up your thigh a little higher
"your parents aren't home right?" he asked and you rolled your eyes, putting the pieces together
"eddie baby, does this have to do with the magazine you were looking at earlier?" you cocked an eyebrow
"uh no..." he trailed off as you leaned over the seat and picked up the magazine, looking at the cover
"really? a playboy?" you giggled and he sighed
"it was the only one within reach and you were up there for like ever and i was imagining you in the outfits they were wearing..." he said as his grip fasted around the wheel
"oh eddie! do you love me? do you need me? do you need to fuck me so badly" you moaned out, a giggle following as you were joking and eddie's eyes darkened
"really babe?" he said with a flat face, sending a quick glare to you as he pulled into your driveway
he turned off the ignition and noticed that your parents car was nowhere to be found, probably cause it was their designated date night leaving the house empty till midnight
"oh i'm sorry baby" you said, pulling him into a kiss which he delightfully responded to, kissing you back
he started kissing down your neck when you stopped him
"eds, let's go inside" you said with a small smile, tugging at his collar and he nodded
he grabbed this things and got out of the car, running quickly to your door and helping you out, shutting the door behind you
he laced your fingers with his, as you walked from the driveway up to your door where you quickly unlocked it and went inside
you shut the front door behind you and turned on some of the lights you had turned off on your way out and headed to your room
once in your room, you dumped your bag and the science book on the desk as you heard eddie yell a "i'm gonna use the bathroom" and you responded back a quick "okay”
you changed into your pajamas, just a shirt and some comfy pants and sat against your headboard on your bed
you allowed yourself to think about steve, what happened, and how it made sense in your brain- everything he did before you and eddie started dating
he was never your boyfriend but you did almost everything together, mostly thanks to dustin, but were you sending him mixed signals you didn't even know you were?
eddie arrived at your door a few minutes later, and shut it behind him
his shoes were off, along with his vest and leather jacket and he shimmed off his jeans and immediately jumped into bed with you, pulling you into his arms and snapping you out of your thoughts
"y/n are you okay? seriously you've been weirdly quiet ever since steve's house" he said and you laid on your side, looking at him as he laid an arm around your torso
you sighed, not wanting to start drama but knowing eddie should know about it
"okay, when i went up to steve's room i heard him singing in the shower and he changed the lyrics to jessie's girl to sing about 'eddie's girl' and he seemed upset you were waiting for me downstairs" you admitted, fiddling with the hem of his shirt
“oh” was all he said, causing your heart to sink
“ed’s i know that you know that im all yours, no matter what right? i don’t want this to be a problem” you said nervously
“i know babygirl, you’re all mine and i trust you” he said with a small smile, kissing you lightly
you felt at ease with eddie as you nuzzled your face into his chest but there was a little bit of steve still lingering on your mind

I agree with Casifer being the worst portrayal of Lucifer in SPN. He is one of the big reasons why I am still stuck in season 11. I seriously am like Can I please skip this fugly face? But I can't, because it is relevant to the plot. Nevermind that Casifer feels like a rehashed version of Leviathan!Castiel. Like Misha, why are you making so many faces? You look comical.
Not even Mark, who equally made a few faces once every while, made Lucifer look comical. Heck, the few times, he showed up in season 11 so far, keeps showing that he is the better Lucifer. Even when he gets poor material. Honestly I have the feeling as if the writers forgot how to write Lucifer. (Especially his dynamic with Sam is just so wrong and unbelievable to me. Like this is your true vessel aka the one body perfect for harbouring you; why would you try to kill Sam over and over?!)
Heck, I would have gotten it if Casifer was like a stepping stone for Lucifer to get closer to Sam, but they don't even do that. Seriously, what was the whole point of building up the first half of season 11 to Sam going back to the Cage, when it then gets resolved like this???? Just dumb and dumber right there.
Also I am now in the episode where Amara tortures Casifer, and I am not kidding, when I say this, but I don't care! I don't care for what happens to Castiel or to Lucifer. I am like the character is being tortured, and I couldn't give less of a fuck. Like how deep do you have to fall as a writer to fuck up such a basic save the cat moment?!
But yeah, anybody saying that Misha somehow did an amazing job as Casifer has me howlering, because it feels like somebody clearly doesn't know how to play a villain. Honestly Casifer comes more across as a sleezy pevert then the actual devil. And then Hellers have the balls to say Jared cannot act as Lucifer. I am like Oh, I am sorry, but Jared nailed Lucifer. So did Mark in season 5. Misha doesn't even come close!
LMAO, yes he thinks making funny faces and having a weird accent are all that are needed to 'act' like a different character.
It's more like the writers in season 11 had NO idea who season 5-7 Lucifer was. He's another great character that should never have been bought back in later seasons. But they needed to give Cass a reason to still be in the show storyline, so that's why Lucifer and Claire returned.
The thing that pisses me off with Amara torturing Lucifer!Cass, is that ALL the angels that Amara encountered got wiped out of existence.
Lucifer!Cass was the ONLY one to live to see another day. Because MISHA couldn't be out of a job.
When she removed Lucifer from "the vessel", why wasn't Cass also removed? Again, because JIMMY would have returned to his family and MISHA would have been out of a job.
Even Rick Springfield was a better Lucifer than mishmash.

Before we start, I'd like to say that the below combination....speaks to me, on a personal level.
WHEW.
12x02: Mamma Mia
This episode *eyeroll* - there were like...five? good things about it.
(Mary Winchester as the OG John Winchester Apologist not being one of them.)
wrong.
Anyway, here is the only good stuff from 12x02.
1.
INTERIOR: SAM AND TONI ARE IN BED RELAXING AND HOLDING GLASSES OF WINE.
For the life of me this is the ONLY DECENT THING I CAN FIND FOR this scene and I do not understand how that’s possible. You can’t even see her face. Damn.
There are so many good shots in this!!!! Someone make me a better .gif. Maybe cut Sam out of it?
Update: semi-acceptable follow-up image:
Sexual escapades are actually a continuing theme in the torture:
TONI
Good morning, Sam. Let's start again, shall we? Take our time. I've cleared my calendar. I would like names and locations of every Hunter... the passcodes to each and every Men of Letters database held in the bunker, and then – oh, yes – let's do discuss your relationship with the demon Ruby.
** Can’t find the actual reaction to this, so hey let’s play Sam reacts but wrong episodes ONLY**
SEXUAL ESCAPADE THEME RECURS HERE:
[INTERIOR: THE CELLAR, TONI LOOKS OVER HER TORTURE TOOLS AND PICKS UP BRASS KNUCKLES. SHE WALKS OVER AND SLUGS DEAN.]
TONI: Passcodes, Sam. Not yet?
[TONI LOOKS OVER AT DEAN WHO’S CHAINED WITH HIS HANDS OVER HIS HEAD.]
TONI: Anything to add?
DEAN: No. No, I just came by for some tea and a beating.
[TONI: PUTS DOWN THE BRASS KNUCKLES AND PICKS UP A CUP OF TEA.]
TONI: Really? See, I thought you might be on for a little chat about your mate, Benjamin Lafitte. I'm sorry. You called him Benny. You know, the vampire whom you released from Purgatory and...befriended.
***she sips her fucking tea after she says “befriended” suggestively. SHE. SIPS. HER. TEA. This is not a drill***
I see. Well... the English are nothing if not patient.
BONUS - actual footage of Lady Motherfucking Antonia Bevell deciphering the past 11 seasons of subtext in respect to Dean’s sexuality:
Bi!Dean confirmed.
QUEEN DID NOT COME TO PLAY.
2.
Dean’s spiral at the bunker
CASTIEL: Okay, I understand. I'll call you in the morning.
[WHILE TALKING, DEAN RISES AND STARTS PACING.]
DEAN: Cass, hey. So, here's the thing. It's been kind of weird here with, you know, Mom being back. It's like we don't know how to act around each other, so we just kind of make this small talk and act normal, but it's – it's so not normal.
CASTIEL: Um, I'm – I'm not sure. What – what has she said to you?
DEAN: Well, nothing. That – that – that's the whole point.
CASTIEL: Okay, what have you said to her?
CASTIEL HANGS UP.
DEAN: Yeah. Great. That's helpful. Thanks.
***Dean is so OPEN with Cas on this call. You can tell this is a deeper, different dynamic and it really shows how close they’ve gotten after that heart wrenching Season 11 finale. these NEWLYWEDS. they are in a RELATIONSHIP. And Cas’s terrible attempt at helping also shows how new and fresh it is, how they’re working through how to “be” this new way together, Dean still working on how to express feelings without spiraling, Cas clumsily trying to support him. I AM GOOOOOOO.
This is a fucking warm blanket.
Also confirmed by the subsequent scene, because otherwise WHY EVEN HAVE THIS DIALOGUE in the follow-up call:
DEAN
Hey, Cass, what do you got?
[EXTERIOR: DAY, CASTIEL IS STANDING SLIGHTLY BEHIND A VERY LEAFY TREE.]
CASTIEL
I think I may have found Sam's location. It's a farm. It appears empty, but it was rented two weeks ago to a woman with an English accent.
[DURING THE CONVERSATION THE SCENE SWITCHES BETWEEN THE BUNKER AND THE EXTERIOR OF THE FARMHOUSE.]
DEAN
Did you have a look inside?
CASTIEL
No No, it's – it's powerfully warded.
***Cas asks because he’s not sure if Dean is trying to talk about his feelings again or if it’s still about the case, because this is THAT NEW (and he probably had an ENTIRE headcase moment about his prior horrific attempt to “help” so he’s worked up all sorts of tidbits of advice for next time) *** <- can someone ficlet this little plot hole? I need it in my life.
THAT IS THE ONLY REASON TO HAVE THIS HERE. THERE IS NO OTHER REASON.
BONUS:
Remember Castiel’s pimp mobile?
That new husband energy:
HES SO DAPPER HERE. All the heart eyes.
3.
Helpful husband moment
[EXTERIOR: DAY, OUTSIDE THE FARMHOUSE. THE IMPALA PULLS UP. CASTIEL IS LEANING AGAINST THE TRUCK. DEAN AND MARY EXIT THE IMPALA AND WALK UP TO CASTIEL.]
DEAN
Where's all this warding you mentioned?
CASTIEL
It's cloaked. It's very powerful. You brought your mother?
MARY
Hello, Castiel. Yes, he did.
DEAN
You sure there's anyone inside?
CASTIEL
No. The agent said the lease was handled long distance, but someone warded the house.
DEAN
I'm gonna go have a closer look.
[MARY STARTS TO FOLLOW DEAN.]
DEAN: Mom, I got this.
[DEAN SHAKES HIS HEAD IN ACKNOWLEDGEMENT THEN LOOKS TO CASTIEL FOR HELP.]
DEAN: Thanks.
[[DEAN LOOKS AT CASTIEL GRATEFULLY AND WALKS AWAY.]
***This entire scene deserves a thorough rewatch. Go watch it now. Bathe in the serotonin. I watched it probably 6 times. THE BODY LANGUAGE. THE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS. Cas saying “you brought your mother” because he KNOWS how worried and overprotective Dean is of her, already. This is Destiel peak supportive husband and Mary is realizing it and its just all so fucking cute and happy. Bravo to all of your Acting Choices!
4.
PIEEEEEEE
I will not go into my PhD dissertation about how pie is a metaphor for the true happiness and love Dean Winchester desires and DESERVES but feels like he cannot have because it will be snatched away from him.
I will not go into it at this time. (It will also make me even ANGRIER about what they DID TO PIE in 15x20. I am still healing).
I repeat, I will not go in to it - unless -
5.
Kitchen confidential
Look where Dean is relaxing, with a beer or 3, and looking at old family pictures at the end. It’s not his room.
It’s the kitchen. He’s just hanging out in the kitchen, comfortably as if he does this often.
Remember when Lucifer was possessing Cas in 11x18 and we had this scene, where Cas is in his head but in the Winchesters’ kitchen and - I wondered -
If his happy place
was
the Winchesters’ kitchen. And why.
THIS SHOW.
I guess the good in this episode took up more space than expected. I’m sorry for spamming you guys with this long, back to back Season 12 content, but I have a dossier.
And I’m just getting started.
BONUS:
MICK
Here’s my number.
Also, picturing this, but in Casifer, said TO Rick Springfield.

When I was a kid: [Credence Clearwater Revival's "Fortunate Son" comes on the radio]
My dad: [ten minute obscenity-laced rant about why the song is offensive to his ears and brain and he wants to murder it]
Me: 😕 'Embarrassing...'
NOW: [Rick Springfield's "Jessie's Girl" comes on the radio]
Me, old enough to have kids: "Maybe you can't find a woman like that because you're a dick! You're just a jealous sexist pig! You're hitting on your best friend's girlfriend and seriously expect her to just latch right onto your pecker instead? That's dick behavior! She doesn't owe you jack! Any woman with class and sense would rather go on beaver-dammed for the rest of the year than resort to a guy like you! That's why you're stuck with your hand, you whiny-ass prick!"
My Dad: 😬 '...oops.'

Quiet Hours [College!Luke AU] Ch. 13
Previous Chapters: Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3 | Chapter 4 | Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 | Chapter 7 | Chapter 8 | Chapter 9 | Chapter 10 | Chapter 11 | Chapter 12
Chapter 13
INSTEAD OF STRESSING out about what some boy thought of her, Ophelia made sure her frustrations were dedicated towards the schoolwork she had to get done. She was a junior in college with a big workload that she was constantly trying to lessen—she didn’t need to get distracted over what the hell was going on with some boy that she had sex with a couple of times. Even if she did sometimes, quite creepily, found herself straining her ear to make out what Luke was doing in his bedroom in the apartment over.
She stopped doing so when she realized just how strange and pathetic that was.
Ophelia found herself at The Hideout with her friends, with Shawn coming along with Tanya and Isabelle bringing Jill, a girl she had recently started seeing. It was a good way to unwind after a long week of writing two research papers and presenting a project. She felt the special need to reward herself because she submitted the weekly paper for her online class early even though it’s due on Sunday, so Ophelia virtually had no homework for the weekend and a lot of time to find some kind of distraction to keep her from thinking of the one person who kept creeping into her mind.
“I love these,” Ophelia commented as she took a sip of her Coke, lips wrapped around the straw as she drank the beverage from a classic glass bottle. Not many places served the soda like this, and it was one of the little things in life that made Ophelia happy.
Shawn, sitting across from her in the booth with his left arm draped around Tanya’s shoulders, snickered as he used his free hand to pick up the nachos on the table between them. “Don’t break it like last time,” he remarked, to which everyone laughed while Ophelia whined about her dropping the bottle when she was drunk and it shattering to pieces happening only one time.
Just then Tanya perked up as her dark eyes went to something over Ophelia’s shoulder and past the booth. “Oh, the dart board is available—c’mon, Lia.”
She had been wanting to play a round of darts since the group of them walked into the bar, but the board had been occupied until now. So the two slid out and wandered towards the back wall by the bar, with Tanya plucking out darts from the board and handing Ophelia the green ones. Jesse’s Girl by Rick Springfield was playing through the speakers as, on the other side, the sound of pool balls clinking together could be heard. Ophelia went first, standing the appropriate distance as she threw the first dart. It was on the outer ring, the second landing there as well before the other two landed on the inner one and the last being a bullseye.
As she pulled off her darts and stepped aside to let Tanya go, Ophelia crossed her arms over her chest when she heard her friend say, “okay, spill. What’s been bugging you for the past few days?”
Ophelia blinked before frowning at Tanya, leaning back against one of the wooden pillars that supported the bar. “What?”
Tanya rolled her eyes, throwing one of her darts as it landed in the inner circle before shooting Ophelia a knowing look. “You’ve been drowning yourself in your work—we rarely saw you outside of your room or the study. You only do that when you’re trying extra hard to distract yourself from something else.”
Rolling her lower lip into her mouth, Ophelia glanced up at the wooden ceiling as she wondered if she really was that easy to read. When she looked back at Tanya, she let out an exasperated huff when she saw the same pointed expression on her face. “I’m fine, Tan, really,” she assured, tightening her arms across her chest. “Just trying to get my shit together,” Ophelia added with a light laugh.
“Does that include your feelings for Luke?” her friend questioned, followed by the sound of the dart hitting the board.
Ophelia pressed her lips together, feeling her skin warm up with an embarrassed flush. “Is it that obvious?”
She wasn’t even going to bother denying it—Tanya was her friend and Ophelia knew she was going to end up telling her anyway. So Ophelia let out a sigh, throwing her head back as it collided on the post with a light thud and she would complain about how much it hurt if she wasn’t already thinking about how annoyed she was with her stupid boy problems.
“Only because I know you,” Tanya scoffed, prompting Ophelia to let out a wry chuckle. Then, Tanya smirked, “also, Iz may have mentioned something about you catching feelings for someone you were only meant to fuck around with a little while back.”
An affronted exclaim escaped Ophelia, brows furrowing into a glare as she looked behind her to where their friends sat. Of course, Isabelle was out of her sight in the booth, so Ophelia turned to look at Tanya again. “The bitch can’t keep anything to herself.”
Tanya laughed, throwing her last dart and letting out a huff when it didn’t lie in the center. “But seriously though,” she began once more after pulling out the darts and looking at her friend once more. “I haven’t seen you and Luke hang out in a while. Hell, even Michael asked me about what was up with you two.” Ophelia’s brows raised at that, taken aback. “You don’t fuck with him anymore?”
Ophelia scoffed, unable to keep the bitterness from her voice as she grumbled, “more like Luke doesn’t fuck with me anymore.”
Thinking about it now, how her and Luke haven’t even had a proper conversation ever since that game night, twisted Ophelia’s stomach unpleasantly. She hated that she had grown so attached to a guy she hooked up with so quickly—that’s never happened before. But then again, she’s never had sex with tall Australian singers who made her knees weak by a single look. Luke had a tight hold on her, whether it be physically or mentally, that she was struggling in loosening.
Tanya’s eyes widened as Ophelia moved to take her spot to throw the darts. “Oh my—did he ghost you?” she demanded, a fire lighting up in her dark eyes. Luke may be taller than her, but Tanya was willing to fight him on behalf of Ophelia. Or, maybe, have Shawn do it for her.
Ophelia’s eyebrows furrowed, the hurt evident in her fallen expression as she mumbled, “I guess so,” before forcefully throwing the dart, feeling a sense of annoyance as it went to the outer edge of the outer ring. “I mean, it’s my fault,” she added, waving the darts in her hands around. “I should’ve known better than to expect anything else from someone who I know hooks up with whoever. I mean, I hear it, for fuck’s sake.”
“You can’t help how you feel, Lia,” was Tanya’s immediate and honest response as a classic rock song Ophelia didn’t recognize began playing through the bar. “And have you, like, heard him? You know. . . In his room with anyone?” she cringed when she asked, not wanting to offend her friend in anyway by asking if she heard the guy she liked having sex with other girls.
Ophelia pursed her lips, throwing another dart. “No,” she answered truthfully. She then glanced over at Tanya, “but that doesn’t mean—”
She cut herself off immediately as her gaze flickered over Tanya’s shoulders, words dying in her mouth as she saw the bar’s doors open and in walked the devil himself with his friends. Ophelia’s throat dried at the sight of the blonde in his Rolling Stones shirt and black leather jacket and jeans, hair in its usual curls that her fingers itched to run through.
“What?” Tanya questioned in confusion, noticing Ophelia’s change in demeanor before turning around following her gaze. “Oh,” she sounded when her eyes landed on what Ophelia was staring at.
Luke and the boys approached the bar, giving their orders and receiving their drinks moments later before they turned to sit down at one of the round tables in the middle since the booths were full. Ophelia couldn’t help but look at him from where she stood on the other side of the bar, feeling some kind of dull ache in her chest at the sight of his wide grin as he laughed, the sound drowned out by the music and people talking. He looked happy, utterly fine. Not at all like Ophelia, who now was resigned with herself for moping over him in the first place. Why was she so hung up when he, at least on the outside, seemed perfectly content?
Forcefully tearing her gaze away from the Australian, Ophelia took in a sharp breath and looked back at the board across from her, tightening her grip on the dart before throwing it right at it. Tanya pressed her lips together to stop the smile growing on her face when she saw the dart hit the bullseye. “Were you imagining Luke’s face on the board?”
That got a laugh out of Ophelia, pausing when she was about to throw another dart as she shot an amused look at Tanya. “Of course not,” she responded in a knowing tone, smirking as Tanya let out a giggle. Ophelia wasn’t going to outright say that she had briefly imagined blue eyes and a dimpled smile on the board.
They finished their game and went to go back to the booth, though Ophelia made a detour towards the bar since she had finished her drink. She found an empty spot at the busy counter, leaning against it on her arms as she gestured for the bartender for a beer. The guy was familiar with her face—and, unbeknownst to him, her fake I.D.—so he gave her a nod of acknowledgment.
As she patiently waited, tapping her hands on the countertop with her college peers flanked her on either side, Ophelia froze when she heard, “hey, R.A. Ophelia.”
Her throat worked, teeth grinding together as Ophelia turned around to see the familiar man standing right behind her. Luke stared down at her with bright blue eyes, a small, almost nervous, smile on his face as he peered down at her. His hands were buried in the pockets of his jacket, broad shoulders hiding the rest of the bar behind him from her.
She wasn’t going to lie—it bothered her that he would just come up to her and try to spark conversation after avoiding her like the Plague for the past few days. One minute he was ghosting her and now he was coming up to her at a bar? Ophelia hated boys. “Hi, Luke.”
Luke, to his credit, had picked up the uncomfortable shift in Ophelia’s body language, her jaw clenching and arms coming up to cross over her chest as she looked up at him. Honestly, he didn’t know what compelled him to come up to her—he had seen her approach the bar and straightened in his seat, feeling the sudden urge to talk to the girl he had been deliberately annoying like an asshole. He wasn’t surprised that she looked like she wanted to be anywhere but in front of him at the moment. And it hurt something in Luke’s chest even though he knew he had no right to feeling anything like that, not when it was his own fault that she couldn’t even offer him a smile upon sight.
So he swallowed inaudibly before asking, “can we, uh, talk?”
Ophelia didn’t even try to stop the scoff from escaping her as she rolled her eyes, hip jutting slightly as she retorted, “oh, now you wanna talk?” Luke tried not to recoil, not missing the edge in her tone and the narrowing of her eyes. “I don’t wanna hear it, Luke.”
Oh, but she did. She totally did want to hear it and just when those words slipped past her mouth, Ophelia mentally berated herself. What if he was about to explain himself? Ophelia let her big-headed pride get in the way of finding out the answers to the questions that have been bothering her, and she’d slap herself for it if Luke actually did end up leaving her alone.
Just then, the bartender behind Ophelia handed her her beer, and she gave him the money before picking up the bottle and moving to take a step around Luke’s broad figure. “Wh—you’re just gonna walk away?” Luke questioned with furrowed brows, watching as she brushed past him with an indifferent expression painted on her face that was merely a mask to hide how she truly felt.
She threw him a narrow eyed glare over her shoulder, took in the disgruntled and bewildered look he wore, and suddenly felt a newfound surge of some kind of power as she countered, “doesn’t feel good, does it?” before shouldering past some guy and walking to the other side where her friends were seated.
Ophelia could feel Luke’s gaze burning into her back, only boosting her confidence and making her feel all the more powerful for brushing him off like that. Sure, she wanted to know what he had to say, but she wasn’t going to give him the satisfaction of immediately listening to his explanation the first time he came up to her after ignoring her for days. She had more pride than that. And stubbornness.
So she went to sit back down with her friends, purposefully avoiding glancing Luke’s way as he, in turn, let out a small breath of disbelief and surprise before reluctantly returning to his seat at the table with the boys. “You look like you struck out,” Calum commented as the blonde sat down across from him defeatedly. Calum glanced over his shoulder to where Ophelia sat with her friends. Looking back at Luke, he frowned, “she didn’t wanna talk?”
Luke let out a sharp breath and shook his head, tugging at the front of his jacket. Next to him, Michael scoffed as he set down his beer. “Are you surprised? You’ve been ignoring her.”
The muscle in Luke’s jaw twitched at his words because he knew Michael was right. He shouldn’t have expected Ophelia to want to talk to him right away because he definitely offended her by avoiding her more often than not lately. Luke, in his defense, didn’t know what to do. He was confused as to how and what he felt towards Ophelia because at first he had figured she was just someone to hook up with. But then they had sex twice, then three times and he found himself not being able to get enough. Luke hadn’t wanted someone so badly the way he did Ophelia, a desire so intense he had to take a moment and step back. Unfortunately, he didn’t go about doing so the right way.
How in the world could he have thought just ignoring her would make what he felt go away? Would help him make sense of what was going on in his head? It only made things worse for him—both emotionally and in the face of Ophelia as well. Now she didn’t even want to speak to him, and Luke had no one to blame but himself and his incapability of figuring shit out.
“You gotta apologize to her, man,” Ashton instructed after swallowing down a couple of French fries. “Tell her you’re sorry for being a dick.”
Luke shot him a flat look, though mildly annoyed because that’s exactly what he wanted to do before Ophelia shot him down, as he took a sip of his whiskey. It warmed his throat and settled in his stomach with a calming buzz. His eyes kept flickering over Calum and Ashton’s shoulders through the night to gaze at Ophelia sitting in the booth, having utterly no regard for him as she laughed, chatted, and took occasional sips of her beer. Luke bit the inside of his cheek at her smile—something he’d only been able to see through her social media. He felt a smile twitching on his lips at the sight of hers, even if it wasn’t directed to him. Even if he wasn’t deserving of it.
When Ophelia and her friends got up and began filing out of the bar around midnight that night, momentary panic set in Luke as he realized she was leaving and they hadn’t yet talked. So quickly finishing his new bottle of beer and slamming it on the table, Luke scrambled to his feet and didn’t bother giving his friends an explanation before running out the door, leaving them staring after him in bewilderment. The cold October night air slapped him as he stepped out, but he paid it no attention as he caught sight of who he was after and called out, “Ophelia!”
The hazel eyed girl’s laughter ceased, her and her friends all pausing in approaching the parking lot as they turned around to see the blonde dressed in black. His curly hair was tousled because of his wind as they stood a few feet away from the door. “We need to talk,” he stated clearly before his lips set into a firm line.
Ophelia gazed at him, taking in the seriousness of his expression. Her brows furrowed before glancing at her friends, pocketing her car keys. “I’ll see you at home.” She shot a reassuring look to her friends before they nodded and began walking away—though not before all three of Ophelia’s roommates shot her knowing looks. When Shawn’s and Isabelle’s cars drove off, Ophelia looked at Luke, who had neared and stopped about five feet from her. “What?”
Luke peered at the pretty girl in front of him, his Adam’s apple bobbing as he took in how comfortably adorable she looked in her dark red winter coat and matching beanie that sat atop her head. The cold already had her nose and cheeks flushing pink and Luke wanted to do nothing more than to pull her close and keep her warm.
“I owe you an apology,” he stated regretfully and roughly while shoving his hands in the pockets of his jacket. The music from the dive bar behind them was muffled and there was no one in the parking lot but them, allowing them to hear the occasional whistle of the wind. “I was—I don’t know what I was thinkin’, ignoring you like that. It was childish of me.”
Ophelia let out a scoff at that, crossing her arms over her chest whether it be defensively or from the cold, neither of them could be sure. “Yeah, it was,” she agreed easily, with a defiant quirk of her eyebrow. She hadn’t expected to have this conversation in the middle of The Hideout’s empty parking lot with only a couple of street lamps lighting the area, but she guessed the time to talk was now. “You could’ve been upfront about not wanting to, like, fuck around anymore,” she added, shifting her weight from one foot to the other uncomfortably.
“I don’t—that’s not what this is, sweetheart,” Luke assured hastily, almost desperately as he took a step towards her, long legs bringing him closer to her rooted figure. Ophelia had to swallow inaudibly as the term of endearment slip past Luke’s lips, unwittingly feeling more affected by it than she liked. Luke paused for a moment, tongue poking out to wet his lower lip and Ophelia tried not to follow the action as he spoke up almost hesitantly. “If I’m bein’ honest. . . I can’t stop thinking ’bout you.”
That caught her off guard. Ophelia blinked in surprise, unsure of whether or not to believe Luke, though the earnest expression on his face told her he was being honest. And he was. Luke may have been ignorant and avoiding her lately, but the thoughts that ran through his mind constantly reminded him of the girl living on the other side of his room. Multiple times he had wanted to march right over to her, but refrained himself because he wasn’t sure of what he wanted.
Truth be told, Luke still didn’t know what he wanted, not exclusively. All he knew was that he wanted Ophelia in the way he had her before and for now, that would have to be enough. And he hoped she would be okay with that, should she agree.
“You have a funny way of showing that,” Ophelia pointed out, pouty lips puckering even more and the mere action had Luke’s jeans tightening and jaw clenching. She then licked her lips and Luke wished she stopped playing with the skin because he was losing any ounce of self control he had. With a sigh, Ophelia asked, “what do you want, Luke? Because not to sound like too much of a girl, but you ignoring me after all of that made me feel seriously used.” She scrunched her face up at her own words, knowing they sounded needy and clingy but she didn’t know how else to say what she needed. “If you wanna end whatever the hell this was, then do it to my face. Don’t ignore my damn existence like we’re in high school.”
Her confidence when it came to Luke was always something to come and go, but after being offended and hurt by Luke avoiding her as if she had done something wrong had her standing up for herself in whatever capacity necessary. Ophelia knew that people ghosting others was relatively normal, especially those you’ve hooked up with, but she hated that. If she didn’t want to do anything with someone anymore, she was straight up with them and she would hope they would give her the same courtesy. Ignoring them until they go away was childish and rude.
Luke’s expression fell somewhat, a pang of guilt resonating through him at the knowledge of how he had made her feel. Fuck, I’m an ass. He ran his ring clad fingers through his curly hair, pushing it back and away from his disgruntled face of steepened brows and lips rolled into his mouth. “I’m a dick, I know,” he relented, taking yet another step towards Ophelia, the closing distance rising her gaze because of his height. “I promise I’m not gonna disappear on you again, babe, I swear.”
Babe had so effortlessly rolled from his lips that it made Ophelia’s heart thud as a gust of wind blew against her face, prompting shivers to run down her spine despite the coat she wore. Whatever was going on with her and Luke, she was going to accept it as it came. Ophelia may have feelings for Luke but she didn’t know where he stood on that matter and unless he was absolutely clear, then she wouldn’t assume anything. If he just wanted to fuck, she was okay with it and if he wanted more, that was definitely okay, too. It would be hard for her, hooking up with a guy she has feelings for but only keeping it physical, but she would take it in stride.
She was way too attracted to Luke to prioritize her feelings over her desire for him.
So, swallowing down her emotions for the Australian in front of her, Ophelia took a breath and stated, “you never answered my question.” When Luke shot her a quizzical look, Ophelia briefly bit the inside of her lower lip before repeating, “what do you want?”
Luke’s blue eyes locked on her green, silence surrounding them despite the music inside the bar. He didn’t know how to truly answer that question because putting a label on what he wanted wasn’t something he was quite ready for. He didn’t want a relationship, not yet anyway, but the sight of the pretty girl in front of him had Luke’s stomach clenching and heart quickening.
So, he gave the only answer both of them would be satisfied with. “You.”
That was all it took for Ophelia’s breath to hitch and confidence to strengthen as she grabbed him by the lapels of his jacket and pulled him in for a searing kiss, one which warmed them both to the core despite the cold nipping at their bodies. The heated rush of the kiss had Ophelia and Luke melting into each other, having gone too long without the other’s touch as Luke’s hands cupped her face, Ophelia feeling her toes curl as the cold metal of his rings touched her skin.
Her car was only a few feet away, so it’s safe to say the two had no trouble in walking towards it without detaching their lips and climbing into the backseat, more than ready to get rid of their clothes and give into the unadulterated hunger that always sparked to life the moment their eyes met.

Hot In Cleveland
Greetings to literally no one! Hopefully that will change....
I’ve had this account for a while now and I’ve finally thought about what I want to use it for.
Starting today, this will be a literary analysis of some of the entertainment media I have consumed over the years. Why you ask? Hmmmm, that’ll be for a later post. I hope that you enjoy reading this!
WARNING: THESE POSTS WILL UNASHAMEDLY CONTAIN SPOILERS!
Today, we’ll begin with a sitcom that’s very close to my heart - Hot In Cleveland
[cue title music - ba ba ba baaaa... ba ba baaa... dwing dwing HEY!]
PREMISE
Hot in Cleveland first premiered in 2010 on TV Land as their first ever original production. Up until that point, the network was well known for airing reruns of previously ended shows, such as The Cosby Show and The Golden Girls. One of the producers of the show was Sean Hayes of Will & Grace fame.
The show revolves around three middle-aged women bound for Paris to forget their troubles of broken hearts and struggling careers when their plane makes a emergency landing in Cleveland, Ohio. Deciding to explore the city, they find it a more compassionate and welcoming than the glamorous, youth obsessed Los Angeles and decide to relocate there. When they rent a house, they find it comes with a decidedly snarky housekeeper.
CAST & CHARACTERS
Valerie Bertinelli as Melanie Moretti - a recently divorced one-time author, she has known very little beyond her roles as mother and wife. She tends to be very optimistic and romantic, often to the annoyance of her friends. Out of the younger trio, she takes the most to Cleveland and tries new things to broaden her horizons. She is the most compassionate out of the three, often being the glue that binds them together. Though she’s a very nice character to watch, she lacks true grit and comes off as a pushover at times. I don’t know much about Valerie’s work before the show, but she does do quite well, with her natural warmth and friendliness coming through.
Wendie Malick as Victoria Chase - an ambitious but ditzy soap opera actress, she has just had her show cancelled and falls into despair at not being in the public eye anymore. Self-centered and willing to do almost anything, Victoria is the least enthusiastic about moving to Cleveland due to the lack of botox and paparazzi among other things. Over time, she takes on various projects to try and revive her career, resulting in an Emmy & Oscar win. Wendie Malick is best known for her role on Just Shoot Me as well as her voice acting in various shows and movies, such as The Emperor’s New Groove and BoJack Horseman. She’s an absolute delight to watch here, completely immersing herself in the role and surrendering to Victoria’s insanity.
Jane Leeves as Rejoyla ‘Joy’ Scroggs - a beautician with a business that’s starting to fail, Joy’s real problem is being unlucky in love. From being abandoned by her teenage sweetheart when she fell pregnant by him, to being left at the altar on her wedding day, Joy’s endless parade of bad luck has left her cynical and just a tad yandere for any man who dares cross her (watch out boys...). She’s neutral to Cleveland, but secretly longs for romance and eventually settling down to start a family. Jane is best known for her work on Fraiser. She’s initially a bit frigid over the first two seasons but warms up to the role as she gains more prominence in the show over the later seasons.
Betty White as Elka Ostrovsky - an escapee from WWII Poland, she is a widow who lives in the house as a caretaker. Though she finds the LA trio’s obsession with glitz and glamour very strange, she quickly makes friends with them to varying degrees, often dispensing advice and acting as a voice of reason when the others get a bit too crazy or feel despondent. She is very proud of Cleveland, eventually becoming its mayor and is not averse to doing things outside of the law. Betty White has a career in television spanning over 80 years. She was initially only supposed to appear in the pilot episode but the audience response was quite positive so the producers upgraded her to series regular.
STRUCTURE, WRITING & DEVELOPMENT
The series plays out as a typical slice-of-life sitcom. The idea of older women living together and going through life isn’t new - think Golden Girls in the modern era and you pretty much have the gist of the show. However, is that such a bad thing? I think every TV era needs a show that focuses on the challenges one faces as the march of time proceeds; something that feels comfortable without pushing the boundaries too much and HiC was that for a generation who missed out on Betty White’s previous hit show. It wasn’t cerebral watching and it didn’t need to be.
In line with this, many of the plots are taken out from well known tropes that have developed over the years. Love triangles, a vapid rivalry in Hollywood, false pregnancies and lost loves returning all play part in the show’s six season run, edited and polished for character context. This is a big part of why the show felt so familiar to many viewers. Script structures followed one of three methods:
Characters A & B take part in subplot 1 whilst C & D take part in subplot 2 - this proves most effective for humor, balancing out the plot and giving each character something to work with
Characters A & B take part in subplot 1, C in subplot 2 and D in subplot 3 - this proves most effective for character development but can feel too scattered at times
Characters A, B, C & D take part in the main plot - this is most effective for plot lines, usually occurring at season premieres or finales
In terms of character development, the main trio of ladies find fulfillment in each other’s status. I’ll explain:
Melanie was an author but didn’t really have much experience in the working world, choosing instead to derive her satisfaction from being a mother and a wife. Now that her marriage is over and her kids are in college, she feels lost and doesn’t know what to do with herself. Over the course of the show, she has a series of meaningful relationships but develops the most in her career;becoming a column writer, a public relations assistant, a radio show host and a restaurant manager. This is what Victoria was trying to achieve at the beginning of the show.
Victoria is an out of work actress who has to resort to all sorts of tricks to get back into the public eye. Her approach is hit and miss, but she eventually goes on to win an Emmy and an Oscar, along with some work in critically acclaimed stage plays and a brief period as a news reporter. Despite this, she finds more satisfaction in her love life (despite being married EIGHT times!), eventually marrying her one true love at the end of the series. This is what Joy was trying to achieve at the start.
Joy is struggling as a beautician who looks for love in handsome men and one night stands, but never seems to catch a break. Her love life goes from bad to worse and her relationships fail due to a combination of her own issues with trust and the fact that the men she loves aren’t that great to begin with. She eventually puts her cynicism and stalking tendencies (I told you to watch out for her!) to good use, studying criminology and becoming a private detective. She also reconnects with her son that she gave up for adoption and gleefully accepts when she finds out that she’s a grandmother. Long story short, she’s looking for stability and finds it in the most unlikely man, becoming a wife and a mother at the end of the show. This is what Melanie was looking for at the start of the show.
Over the first three seasons, a heavy emphasis is placed on Elka due to the show trying to capitalize on Betty White’s resurgence in popularity at the time. This is in spite of the fact that Elka kind of feels like a lost puzzle piece. She doesn’t really fit in to the whole cohesiveness of the other three characters. This is changed in season 4, when the character of Mamie Sue (played by Georgia Engel, Betty’s costar from The Mary Tyler Moore Show) is promoted to a recurring character. It not only gives a nice chemistry to a previously ill fitting character, it creates a parallel with the LA trio: Mamie Sue is a combination of Victoria’s airheadedness and Melanie’s kindness to Joy’s cynicism found in Elka.
The show starts off quite shakily, despite its hype, but takes a turn for the better around the fourth season. The frivolous story lines from earlier episodes are eschewed for more long term plots with more emotional impact. Themes of loneliness, love at middle age and returning to correct past regrets are explored quite deeply. The show also loses some of the LA stereotypes as it goes on.
Some really big names are booked as guest stars, some notable ones being:
Susan Lucci as a parody of herself, being Victoria’s arch-nemesis
Joe Jonas as Will, Melanie’s son
Craig Ferguson as Simon, Joy’s first love and babydaddy
Jon Lovitz as Artie Firestone, an eccentric billionaire who takes an interest in Joy
Heather Locklear as Chloe, one of Melanie’s bosses at her PR job
The entire cast of The Mary Tyler Moore Show as G.L.O.B. (Gorgeous Ladies of Bowling)
Alan Dale as Sir Emmet Lawson, a renowned actor and Victoria’s sixth husband
Rick Springfield as a parody of himself
BULLSEYES & IMPROVEMENTS
What the show gets right:
Exploring the crossroads many women face at middle age, in terms of the main aspects of life: family, love & career
Great acting, especially in the later seasons
Wendie Malick - she deserved an Emmy nomination for her acting here
Jennifer Love Hewitt as Emmy, Victoria’s eldest daughter. Seriously, watch her episodes and tell me they aren’t funny
The general lack of pressure - you don’t need much attention to cycle in and out of the show, it’s easy watching
The consistency and plot development post season 3
What I think should be improved upon:
Melanie can be TOO nice, something that’s actually picked upon by other characters. Her cancer subplot was a nice opportunity to get some grit, but most of it was just by the way and not fully delved into
Victoria’s job as a news reporter was forgotten as soon as she landed a part in a Woody Allen movie. It would have been nice for her to be in that occupation a bit more or go back to it after her Oscar win and give her a chance to be on the other side of fame
Elka’s love life - every boyfriend seems to be a copy of the other and there are way too many of them
CULTURAL & PERSONAL IMPACT
This article from the A.V. Club goes into detail about the show and I have to say, I agree with it wholeheartedly agree. HiC was a reminder of what was before the more intellectual comedies came along. It shamelessly pandered to an older generation who wanted something familiar in an ever changing landscape. The fact that it didn’t take many risks in its approach was a risk in itself. It was clearly one that paid off, given the six season run. It wasn’t a darling of the critics, but it didn’t need to be. This was a show that could be watched to generate a few laughs without the need for in depth discussion with a coworker in the break room the next day.
A few years after the show’s cancellation, Valerie Bertinelli expressed her anger at TV Land for the decision, calling it sexist. I can’t really comment on that, given that I’m not too familiar with TV Land’s other work, but I will say that HiC did what it had to do. Six seasons in an age where you’re lucky to get more than three is amazing. The plot lines tied up quite nicely at the end and in the end, that’s all that everyone wanted.
Personally, I watched this show at two very difficult times in my life. The first was at college during my final year, when deadlines loomed and twisted my stomach in anxiety. The second was a few months ago when I had quit my job and needed something to distract me from the depression. On both occasions, this show has really made me laugh and fall in love with its simplicity. It’s undemanding and solid, just what I need to get through a trying period.
WHERE TO WATCH IT
Seasons 1 to 5 are available on Amazon Prime Video
Seasons 1 to 4 are available on Hunnyhaha’s channel on Youtube
If you’re in Southern Africa, the entire series are available on Showmax

As a loud & proud member of the LGBT+ community, Pride Month is near and dear to my heart. Naturally, I wanted to do SOMETHING musical to celebrate this time of the season, and it wasn't long before this song came to mind. Why? Because, when a lady sings it, it's gaaaay. Duh.
In all seriousness, this is a cover we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and June gave us the perfect excuse to finally record it. We sincerely hope that you enjoy our unplugged, relaxed, and queer-friendly version of Rick Springfield's hit. We also hope you have a very happy #PRIDE, no matter how you identify, who you love, or what you do.

We’re No Heroes - Chapter 2
Characters: Dean Winchester, Sam Winchester, sister!reader, Tony Stark
Word Count: 2,169
Warnings: Adult language, crochety Dean, and Tony Stark. I think that’s enough warnings.
A/N: So this whole Avengers/Supernatural idea I had got out of hand, and this is the second part to it. There is no timeline for either universe; it’s most definitely an AU. As far as the Avengers go, it’s obviously before Infinity War (for reasons I’m sure you can guess) and I think, generally speaking, we’re just ignoring that Age of Ultron existed. (Unlike a lot of people, I didn’t mind it...but that’s just whole other level of me trying to fit stuff in, and it already hurts my brain. lol) Also, we’re just going to pretend that Civil War either happened and turned out better or it just didn’t happen at all. The Supernatural part is set sometime after they’ve found the bunker. What I’m saying is, I do what I want, and I want all of these people in one spot, and there doesn’t need to be an explanation. Doesn’t have to make sense. Just...let it happen, and bask in it.
Beta’d by @pinknerdpanda, because she’s been my lifesaver as of late. Well, always, but especially here lately. Thank you, twinny. <3 “ I love grumpy old man Dean.”
As always, tags are at the bottom. If you’d like to be added let me know! This fic will, hopefully, be updated every Wednesday until it’s over. Hopefully.
“So, Agent Springfield...Springfield, right?”
“Yep, that’s right.”
“Like Rick Springfield?”
“Yep. My friends call me Dick.”
“May I call you Dick?”
“Nope.”
“Okay, Agent Springfield, what I’d like to know is why you’re in New York. I’ve spoken with the local authorities, and not one of them can tell me why you’d be called in. Not a clue.”
“Hmm. Well, the locals aren’t always included in federal investigations, so there’s your explanation. I don’t report to them.”
“I don’t think you report to anyone. I think you’re impersonating a federal agent, and at the same time, lying to one. You do realize that I’m part of the organization, right?”
“I don’t even remember your name, much less your job description. No offense.”
“Let me refresh your memory, Dean Winchester. My name is Phil Coulson, and I’m the reason you aren’t in a jail cell in a high security lockup. You’ve done some pretty heinous things, so forgive me if I’m less than patient with you. Now tell me, what in the hell happened out there?”
“Why don’t ask you ask your merry band of men in tights? I seem to recall they had a hand in all of it.” He leans forward and Coulson sits back slightly, his eyes wide. “They certainly didn’t seem to be offended by someone like me. Maybe explain why the heroes of the universe would associate with such a heinous individual such as myself? You call me a serial killer? Looks like maybe you should do your job better. I seem to recall a few casualties at the hands of,” Dean rolls his eyes as he air quotes, “‘Earth’s Mightest Heroes’. Now my bro…” he clears his throat and leans back in his chair, “my partner, he’s the true crime expert so he would know better than me...and correct me if I’m wrong...but that sounds a hell of a lot more like a serial killer to me. And you just let them run around in high tech suits and without superversion…” he whistles and puts his hands behind his head, “Doesn’t sound like a good idea to me, although I guess the government has a lot of those-”
“They aren’t serial killers, and if I were you, I’d be very careful how far you step over the line. I’m not asking them, I’m asking you. What happened out there?”
“You’re not as much of a pushover as I thought you would be, Phil. What’s your last name again? Collins? I bet you can feel it in the air tonight, can’t you?”
Coulson glares at Dean, his knuckles white as he clenches them tightly. “It’s Coulson,” he manages to grind out, “and you’d do best to remember that. Now, tell me.”
“Awwe, I’m just having fun with you. I know your last name is Coulson, Debbie Downer. Anyway, it started about a day after we got to New York…”
“Well, that was a fucking bust, wasn’t it?” Dean grumbles as he takes his jacket off and tosses it in the backseat.
“Did you really expect it to go any differently? Since when do we ever actually get the answers we need?” Sam grabs Dean’s jacket off the seat, straightens it, then lays it gently on the bench seat with his own. “Maybe Y/N’s got something.”
Dean climbs into the car and shuts the door as Sam goes around to the passenger side, “Yea, maybe.” He starts the car, and after checking his mirrors, pulls out into the road and is quickly honked at by a taxi that seemingly appears out of nowhere. He sticks his arm out the window, flashes his middle finger, then continues into traffic. Sam rolls his eyes and sighs, and Dean looks over at him. “What?”
“Nothing.”
“Why don’t you call Y/N, see what she’s found?”
Sam is already scrolling through his phone, and he glances at Dean as he puts his phone up to his ear, “You know, you could go easier on her. She's an adult, and she grew up the same way we did. It's different with her, she can take care of herself.” He frowns when she doesn't answer and hangs up.
“What?”
“No answer. She's probably researching. Let's head back to the hotel and see what she's up to.” He taps out a quick text and hits send, then puts the phone back into his pocket.
“I know she grew up like we did, but that doesn’t mean anything. We just found her, the last thing we need is another Adam situation.” They both fall silent at the thought of the youngest Winchester brother still trapped in the cage. “Anyway, I’m just saying, we gotta watch out for her. Her mom will kill us if something happens.”
“She’s not going to kill us.”
“Sam, she could be Ellen’s twin. She will absolutely kill us.”
“Dean, you’re being ridiculous.” They pull into the valet parking and Dean practically growls when he hands his keys over. “What is wrong with you?” Sam hisses under his breath as he grabs their jackets and his bag from the backseat.
“If she so much as gets a thumbprint on a window…” he glares at the valet as he climbs into the driver's seat, Adam’s apple bobbing nervously as he swallows thickly under Dean’s hateful gaze.
“She’ll be fine. What is with you today?”
“I just don’t see why we have to stay in this fancy ass hotel. We could have stayed outside the city for cheaper, and I could park my own damn car. Maybe gone to a bar where I don’t have to pay to just sit down.”
“You don’t have to...you know what, never mind. It’s only for a couple of days, anyway. We’re scoping it out, then we’ll meet up with Garth and see what we need to do.”
Sam smiles at the woman at the front desk, and she blushes furiously before ducking behind her computer. Dean rolls his eyes as Sam pushes the elevator button.
“What?”
“Nothing, Mr. Universe, nothing at all.” They walk into the elevator and Dean jams his thumb into the thirteenth button. “Thirteenth floor. I feel like that's just asking for it.”
It is Sam’s turn to roll his eyes as they ride the rest of the way to their room in silence, other than the canned Muzak playing through the small speakers above them. The elevator finally slows to a stop and the doors slide open with a ding. “When we get to the room, please just...lay off her, huh? She's not a kid, she's a good hunter.”
They step out and begin walking down the hall. “Why don't you quit telling me what to do? As much as you're repeating it, it sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that she's fine.” He puts a hand on Sam’s arm and stops him outside their door, “She’s our responsibility now. We promised Alice that if she came with us, we’d keep her safe. Just being a Winchester is one strike, and I’m sure Y/N taking our last name is probably a second.”
Sam sighs, “Do you really think Alice would have let her come with us if she didn’t trust us? I mean, you’ve met her, right? She’s not exactly a pushover, and I’m also pretty sure she doesn’t care about the last name thing. Y/N did that before we even knew she existed. Nothing is going to happen to her, okay? Not everyone we care about dies.” Dean raises an eyebrow and Sam sighs again. “Alright, I see your point. She’ll be fine.” Sam unlocks the door and pushes it open, “Y/N, were you able to find anything-” He stops mid-sentence when he sees the that the room is empty and exactly the way they had left it that morning. “Y/N?”
Dean throws the bathroom door open, then walks into the connecting suite to find it also empty. He walks back into the living room, “You were saying?”
“I’m sure there’s a good explanation. Maybe she decided to work at the library instead of coming back here.” He pulls his phone from his pocket and frowns, “She’s not answered my text message.” He taps the screen, then quickly puts the phone to his ear. “Y/N, where are you? Call us back as soon as you can.” He hangs up, then looks at Dean, his brows knitted in concern.
“Okay, clearly no one came here...so somewhere between the police station and here, she went off course. It’s Y/N, so that’s not a surprise. And like you said, when she’s researching, she doesn’t pay attention to anything else. You’re probably right, she’s just at the library. Now, where’s that?”
“Do you realize how many libraries are in this city? She could be anywhere.”
Dean plops down on the couch and runs a hand over his face, “Yea, well, we have to start somewhere.”
“If you have a good idea, let’s hear it-” Sam is interrupted by his phone ringing and he quickly answers it. “Hello?”
“Hey, it’s me. Get anything?”
“Seriously? Where are you?!”
“Oh, yea, sorry, I got caught up. You’re never gonna believe-” A muffled voice in the background cuts her off, there is a moment of whispering, and then she comes back on the line. “Actually, can you meet me somewhere? It’s uh...it’s kind of hard to explain. But I think I’ve got some help on this little demon problem we’re having...well, not little. It’s not little at all.”
Dean grabs the phone out of Sam’s hand, “Where the hell are you? You were supposed to come back to the hotel room, what happened?”
“Like I said, it’s hard to explain. I need you guys to meet me at this address.” She rattles it off before Dean has a chance to answer and he grabs the notepad from the coffee table and hastily scribbles the information she gives him.
“But you’re okay, right? All in one piece?”
“Yes, Dean, I’m fine. Thank you for being worried. Now, hurry your asses up and get over here.” The line goes dead and Dean hands the phone back to Sam.
“She gave me an address, let’s go.”
“Where is she?”
“I guess we’re going to find out.”
Dean pulls up to the address Y/N gave him and slows to a stop, his eyes slowly traveling from the entrance to the top of the very tall building.
“You’ve got to be kidding me.”
“What?” Sam asks without looking up from his phone. Dean grabs his face and turns it to the window and he looks up, his jaw dropping at the sight in front of him. “Are you... are you sure this is the address she gave you?”
“Yea, I’m sure.”
They both climb slowly out of the car, their heads turned upward at the sight, and close their doors.
“Mr. Winchester?” Dean looks down and sees a valet standing in front of him, his hand held out and smiling. Dean frowns and the valet laughs, “I’ve been told you’re very protective of...Baby. I promise, sir, she’s in good hands. I wouldn’t have this job if I wasn’t good at it.”
“He’s right you know, I don’t hire riff raff. Happy parks my cars all the time, top notch parking. As a matter of fact, he just parked my car, did it perfectly. Actually, we’ve got a deal, ideal parking in thirty seconds or it’s free.”
Both Winchesters snap their heads in the direction of the voice, their eyes wide. The man belonging to it walks casually down the stairs, sunglasses obscuring the upper part of his face. Dean drops his keys in the outstretched hand and walks around the Impala to join Sam. The man stops in front of them and pulls his sunglasses off, and Sam’s face transforms from disbelief to pure awe.
“What...we…”
“You must be Sam.” He looks him up and down for a moment, “You sure you aren’t part of the super soldier experiment? I mean, you’re huge. What year were you born? And where? I’d like to know what they put in the water there, maybe use it for something here. Science, you know. And you,” his eyes travel to Dean, “you must be Dean. I mean honestly, Y/N said you guys were large, but I think our resident super humans are going to be a little jealous. I’m not, because I’m comfortable with what I was born with, but you know how superheroes can be. Well, genetically enhanced superheroes, anyway.” He holds his hand out, and both Sam and Dean shake it half-heartedly, still confused by what is happening.
“Y/N...is here?”
“Yea, funny story about that. Anyway,” he waves in the general direction of the building, “welcome to Avengers Tower. I’m your host, Tony Stark. Food and beverages will be provided. Now, I think we’ve got some demons to take care of. Shall we?”

How Many Republicans Running For President
Sen Tom Cotton Of Arkansas
How GOP retirements are making the 2022 midterm elections a Trump referendum
Cotton, 43, has been preparing for a potential presidential run since before the 2020 election even happened, visiting the first-in-the-nation primary state New Hampshire last year to campaign for local Republicans. I expect Ill be back to New Hampshire again in the future, he told Insider last October. The betting site PredictIt currently ranks Cotton alongside Pompeo, Rubio and Hawley.
Cotton represented Arkansas in the U.S. House for two terms before becoming a senator in 2015. His first brush with national prominence came in 2006 when he was serving in Iraq as an Army lieutenant. Cotton sent a letter to the editor at The New York Times criticizing their story about the U.S. terrorist finance tracking program. Cotton called for the paper to be prosecuted for revealing the program, and though his letter wasnt published in the Times, it was picked up by the conservative blog Power Line, which Cotton copied on his petition to the Times.
Another Cotton opinion piece did later make it into the Times. His controversial 2020 op-ed, headlined Send In the Troops about using the military and an overwhelming show of force against protesters and rioters following the death of George Floyd, led to the resignation of Times editorial page editor James Bennet. Cotton referenced the op-ed in January after the attack on the Capitol, and said in a statement that those involved should face the full extent of federal law.
What Is A Voter
The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act, which took effect January 1, 2011, created “voter-nominated” offices. The Top Two Candidates Open Primary Act does not apply to candidates running for U.S. President, county central committees, or local offices.
Most of the offices that were previously known as “partisan” are now known as “voter-nominated” offices. Voter-nominated offices are state constitutional offices, state legislative offices, and U.S. congressional offices. The only “partisan offices” now are the offices of U.S. President and county central committee.
Elites Still Matter Enormously In Primaries
George H.W. Bush
Just when journalists and political scientists were ready to proclaim the death of parties in favor of candidate-centered politics, the pendulum started to swing back.
Over the past 35 years, incumbent presidents have had zero problems obtaining renomination even presidents like George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton who alienated substantial segments of the party base with ideological heterodoxy during their first term. Reagan and Clinton both passed the baton to their vice presidents without much trouble.
Insurgent candidates who caught fire with campaigns explicitly promising to shake up the party establishment Gary Hart in 1984, Pat Robertson in 1988, Jerry Brown in 1992, Pat Buchanan in 1996, John McCain and Bill Bradley in 2000, Howard Dean in 2004, Mike Huckabee in 2008, and Rick Santorum in 2012 repeatedly gained headlines and even won state primaries.
But while 1970s insurgents were able to use early wins to build momentum, post-Reagan insurgents were ground down by the sheer duration and expansiveness of primary campaigns.
Tactics that worked in relatively low-population, cheap states like Iowa and New Hampshire simply couldnt scale without access to the broad networks of donors, campaign staff, and policy experts that establishment-backed candidates enjoyed.
Its this invisible primary among party elites that truly matters.
Endorsements were better at predicting the outcome than polls, fundraising numbers, or media coverage.

Fragment Of Lincoln Speech To Kentuckians
A fragment of President Lincolnâs First Inaugural Address is attached to this speech intended for Kentuckians, indicating that it was prepared prior to his journey from Springfield to Washington. The assumption is that Lincoln either planned to receive a delegation from Kentucky during his stop in Cincinnati, or to make a quick excursion into his home state to deliver the speech. The speech itself confirms Lincolnâs belief that there was nothing he could say to appease the South without betraying the principles upon which he had been elected.

Newsom Wins By A Little
Defeating the recall by a narrow margin significantly less than his 24-percentage-point beatdown of Republican John Cox in 2018 could weaken Newsom as he heads into reelection next year.
If he limps out of this, there will be some blood in the water, said Steve Maviglio, a Democratic political consultant. Another Democrat will think they could do better and they can take him on.
Republicans who backed the recall could claim a kind of victory from weakening the governor, even if they failed to throw him out of office. Some of them already are.
Hes spent $80 million, hes in the fight of his life, hes called in the president and the vice president, said Anne Dunsmore, a recall campaign manager.
Hes taking it seriously and hes using a lot of resources to combat us Weve already won. Weve made our point.
A narrow win would also likely trigger lawsuits over the validity of the election results. Conservative commentators have already begun saying, with no evidence, that voter fraud will be to blame if Newsom wins. Former President Donald Trump issued a statement Monday calling the recall another giant Election Scam.
Elder has said he plans to file lawsuits over election irregularities. His website links to another site that asks voters to sign a petition demanding a special session of the California legislature to investigate and ameliorate the twisted results of this 2021 Recall Election of Governor Gavin Newsom.

Emboldened ‘unchanged’ Trump Looks To Re
The set of advisers around Trump now is a familiar mix of his top 2020 campaign aides and others who have moved in and out of his orbit over time. They include Miller, Susie Wiles, Bill Stepien, Justin Clark, Corey Lewandowski and Brad Parscale.
While his schedule isn’t set yet, according to Trump’s camp, his coming stops are likely to include efforts to help Ohio congressional candidate Max Miller, a former White House aide looking to win a primary against Rep. Anthony Gonzales, who voted to impeach Trump this year; Jody Hice, who is trying to unseat fellow Republican Brad Raffensperger as Georgia secretary of state after Raffensperger defied Trump and validated the state’s electoral votes; and Alabama Senate candidate Mo Brooks, according to Trump’s camp.
Trump’s ongoing influence with Republican voters helps explain why most GOP officeholders stick so closely to him. Republicans spared him a conviction in the Senate after the House impeached him for stoking the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, House GOP leaders have made it clear that they view his engagement as essential to their hopes of retaking the chamber, and Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., was deposed as Republican Conference Chair this year over her repeated rebukes of Trump.
Those numbers suggest that Trump could be in a strong position to win a Republican primary but lose the general election in 3½ years. A former Trump campaign operative made that case while discussing Trump’s ambitions.
Republican Candidates Running For The Us 2020 Election
Bill Weld was married twice and has five children.
Weld ran for vice-president as a Libertarian on the Gary Johnson ticket in the 2016 presidential election.
As a conservative, Weld is strongly pro-choice on abortion issues.
The presidential race is on and the candidates are being whittled down to the very few. Who is running on the Republican side? Current President Donald Trump is going for re-election, and the only candidate now challenging him for election as president of the US this coming November 3rd, 2020 is Bill Weld, a former Massachusetts governor.

Kelley said members of his staff have been followed and videotaped while picking up ballots from drop boxes in recent weeks.
“I’ve been doing this almost 18 years, and I would say the end of ’19 leading into ’20 and then all the way up to today has been the most stressful period of my career,” Kelley said.
Up until now, the fraud claims have been mostly isolated to national campaigns and the occasional statewide race.
But Jamie Shew, who oversees elections in Douglas County, Kan., said he worries the tactic could trickle down to local races, where margins are often extremely thin.
“Even in candidates were going to ‘there was fraud’ rather than it was a bad campaign,” Shew said. But “2020 took it to a whole new level. And I don’t think that’s going to go away.”
In Douglas County last year, for instance, a County Commission race was decided by just three votes. Both candidates running accepted the results after a hand recount, but Shew said he worries next time, they might not be so lucky.
‘americans Will See The Current Two Options Are Not The Choice’
Donald Trump to decide on 2024 Presidential run| White House | Latest English News | World News
Jade Simmons is a multi-hyphenated woman. A former beauty queen, professional concert pianist, motivational speaker, rapper, mother, and ordained pastor.
As she puts it, she is an unconventional candidate, “but these are unconventional times”.
“This seemed to me to be a time when we couldn’t afford to do business as usual,” she says. “I’m the daughter of a civil rights activist, and the way my father raised me was that if you see voids, if you see injustices, you need to ask yourself if that might be you that needs to be leaning in.”
She says her goal is to create equal access to opportunity, through economic, educational and criminal justice reform. And in that spirit, she’s aiming to run “the least expensive campaign in the history of our nation”.
“We think it’s abominable that it costs now almost a billion dollars to run for president when the qualifications are that you are 35 years old, a US-born resident, and have lived here 14 years,” says Ms Simmons. “We’d rather spend that money on helping people.”
Full coverage of the US election
While the Republican and Democratic nominees will be on the ballot in all states, independents must meet an array of state deadlines and access requirements.
“I know it sounds wild, given the history of independents! We believe that if we stay standing long enough, there’s still some more disruption coming in – that most Americans are going to see that the current two options are not the choice.

Former Us Ambassador To The United Nations Nikki Haley
Haley, 49, stands out in the potential pool of 2024 Republican candidates by her resume. She has experience as an executive as the former governor of South Carolina and foreign policy experience from her time as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
Haley was a member of the Republican Partys 2010 tea party class. A former South Carolina state representative, her long shot gubernatorial campaign saw its fortunes improve after she was endorsed by Sarah Palin. Haley rocketed from fourth to first just days after the endorsement, and she went on to clinch the nomination and become her states first female and first Indian-American governor.
As governor, she signed a bill removing the Confederate flag from the state Capitol following the white supremacist attack at the Emanuel African Methodist Church in Charleston. She left office in 2017 to join the Trump administration as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, and Quinnipiac poll found she was at one point the most popular member of Trumps foreign policy team.
I think that shes done a pretty masterful job in filling out her resume, said Robert Oldendick, a professor and director of graduate studies at the University of South Carolinas department of political science.
Haley criticized Trump following the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by his supporters, saying she was disgusted by his conduct. Oldendick said he thought her pretty pointed criticism of the president will potentially cause some problems.
Political Primaries: How Are Candidates Nominated
Article two, section one of the United States Constitution discusses the procedures to be followed when electing the president of the United States, but it does not provide guidance for how to nominate a presidential candidate. Currently, candidates go through a series of state primaries and caucuses where, based on the number of votes they receive from the electorate, they are assigned a certain number of delegates who will vote for them at their partys convention.
Earlier party conventions were raucous events, and delegates did not necessarily represent the electorate. Mrs. J.J. McCarthy describes her convention experience:
I can picture the great Democratic convention of 1894 at the old coliseum in Omaha right now I can hear the Hallelluiahs of the assembled. Oh how I wish I had back the youth and the enthusiasm I felt that night, I jumped on a chair and ask that by a rising vote the nomination be made unanimous, how the people yelled, how the packed gallories applauded, it cheers an old man now to think about it.
Politics played a big part in the life of this town years ago. Campaigns were hot, and there was always a big celebration afterwards. Votes used to be bought that is before the secret ballot was adopted. Some sold em pretty cheap. I remember one old fellow who sold out to one party for a dollar then sold out to the other for the same price.

Start Your Day With Laist
For nearly 25 years, Gov. Gavin Newsom rose the ranks of California politics without ever losing an election, buoyed by connections to powerful San Francisco Democrats and a willingness to take risks like sanctinoing same-sex marriage that put him at the vanguard of his party.
Then came the coronavirus pandemic.
The governors attention-grabbing style implementing the nations first stay-at-home order in March 2020, then dining at an exclusive wine country restaurant as he told people to stay home to avoid a winter surge rubbed enough Californians the wrong way that 1.7 million voters launched the second gubernatorial recall in state history.
And yet to fight back, the Democratic leader of one of the nations bluest states returned to what helped him succeed in the early days: connections to fellow Democrats and well-calculated policy risks this time, to fight COVID-19.
At a campaign rally in Long Beach on Monday night, President Joe Biden heaped praise on Newsoms management of the pandemic. Newsom this summer made California the first state in the nation to require vaccines for health care workers and state employees.
Gavin Newsom has had the courage to lead, to stand up for science, Biden said. Hes been one of the leading governors in the nation protecting people and vaccinating his state.
Can you imagine him being governor of this state? You cant let that happen, said Biden, who beat Trump in California last year .
Here Are The Republicans To Keep An Eye On For 2024
Republicans are paying extra attention to a number of Republican governors, senators, and former officials that might consider making a run for president in 2024.
The contenders come from various contingents of right-leaning thought, and will be fighting to capture parts of former President Donald Trumps base. Whichever Republican hopeful prevails will not only become the Republican Partys nominee, but also help determine the ideological trajectory of the Republican Party in the post-Trump era.
Vice President Mike Pence
Its not uncommon for vice presidents to follow up their stint as second-in-command with a run for president. Former President John Adams, the nations second president, was Americas first vice president under President George Washington. More recently, President Joe Biden became the 46th president four years after he ended his eight-year tenure as former President Barack Obamas vice president.
Vice President Mike Pence might decide to do the same, but Pences relationship with Trump seems to be severely tarnished after Pence did not contest the certification of the Electoral College results, as reported by The Hill.
Senator Ted Cruz
Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz could run for president again come 2024 after he defended his senate seat in 2018 from Democratic challenger Beto ORourke. Cruzs bid for the presidency in 2016 ended in failure as Trump captured the Republican Partys nomination.
Senator Josh Hawley

Whos Running For President In 2020
Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. is the presumptive Democratic nominee to challenge President Trump in the 2020 race.
The field of Democratic presidential candidates was historically large, but all others have dropped out. Mr. Trump had also picked up a few Republican challengers, but they have also ended their campaigns.
Running
Has run for president twice before.
Is known for his down-to-earth personality and his ability to connect with working-class voters.
His eight years as Barack Obamas vice president are a major selling point for many Democrats.
Signature issues: Restoring Americas standing on the global stage; adding a public option to the Affordable Care Act; strengthening economic protections for low-income workers in industries like manufacturing and fast food.
Main legislative accomplishment as president: a sweeping tax cut that chiefly benefited corporations and wealthy investors.
Has focused on undoing the policies of the Obama administration, including on health care, environmental regulation and immigration.
Was impeached by the House of Representatives for seeking to pressure Ukraine to smear his political rivals, but was acquitted by the Senate.
Signature issues: Restricting immigration and building a wall at the Mexican border; renegotiating or canceling international deals on trade, arms control and climate change; withdrawing American troops from overseas.
Ended her campaign in March 2020 and said she would back Mr. Biden.

“Hey, hey, Faith, c'mon wake up,” Sam said as he smacked Faith gently on her leg with the back of his hand. Slightly startled, Faith blinked away the sleep in her eyes and propped herself up in bed on her elbows. Sam was sitting next to her, phone in hand. She could see it was lit up with an active call and was suddenly very awake.
“Sully?” She asked eagerly, sitting up fully now. Sam gave a slight shake of his head and tapped the face of the phone, emitting a beep.
“Alright little brother, we got you on speaker,” Sam said, setting the phone face down on the bed between the two of them.
“How ya doing Faith?” Nathan's voice filtered through the phone's speaker.
“I'm hanging in there. How about you? How's Sully?”
“He's alright. Lost a lot of blood but they managed to patch him up. He already complaining so that's a good sign.” Nate said. Faith looked at Sam, she wanted to make sure Nate was bullshitting her just to make her feel better. Sam caught Faith's glance and understood. He gave her an affirmative nod, confirming what Nate was saying was the truth.
“What about Lagina?” Sam asked.
“On his way back to Nova Scotia with 2nd-degree burns and his tail between his legs. I talked to his brother Rick and as long as you don't do anything stupid, like setting foot on Oak Island ever again, he'll consider the matter closed.”
“It was Jasper that tipped him off, wasn't it?” Sam asked, though he already knew the answer.
“He called Marty the second he saw Sully and Faith walk in the door. Between Sully and me, he figured you would be close by.”
“That southern fried fucker,” Sam muttered.
“I hate that guy, he was creepy,” Faith said to herself.
Nate let out a sarcastic chuckle on the other end of the phone.
“No kidding, I'd rather screw a clown than deal with him. Listen Faith, I had an idea about the Lincoln papers. When she got older, Mary Todd Lincoln moved back to Illinois and moved in with her sister and her husband in Springfield. That was the last place the Bible was seen and I think the best place to start looking for the rest of the papers. I got a guy that knows his way around the area. That is if you want to go looking,” Nate finished. He wanted Faith to decide this for herself, it was her book.
“Why wouldn't she want to go?” Sam answered for Faith, who shot him a look of utter annoyance and frustration.
“It's not your decision Sam,” Nate scolded him through the phone.
“Nathan.”
“Sam.”
“Nathan!”
“Sam!”
“Jerkface”
“Buttmunch!”
“Guys!” Faith interjected before the name calling reached a more playground level than it already had. “Nate is it safe for me to go home?” She questioned, anxious to get into some familiar territory.
“Yeah, just have Sam take a look around first to be safe,” Nathan answered.
“Look, I just need like an hour to mull this over, alright? I just wanna think about it a little bit then I'll call you and give you an answer one way or another. That sound good?” She asked.
“Sounds good. Now I'm gonna go try and convince my wife that gunfire doesn't follow me everywhere I go. Unless Buttmunch is with me.”
“I'll call you back soon, thanks, Nathan,” Faith said quickly and hit END on the phone as she saw words of rebuttal forming on Sam's lips. She flipped the phone to Sam. He caught it and put it in one of the many pockets on his cargo pants. He stood up from his spot on the end of the bed and headed to his duffel, grabbing the gun from the table and stowing it back in it's hiding place.
“Ready to get out of here?” Sam asked.
Faith nodded in agreement and flung the covers off of her legs. Her bare legs reminded her that she was in a borrowed shirt and her only other option was an evening gown. She eyed the blue dress with a sour look on her face. Shimmying back into that dress was one of the last things she wanted to do. A pair of gray sweatpants that Sam had grabbed from his clothes landed on her legs.
“Figured you'd want those,” Sam offered with a smirk, his hands stuffed in his back pockets.
“Thanks,” Faith replied, sliding her legs into the large, comfy pants.
“Let's get the hell out of here, yeah?”
Faith began to notice a trend in the cab rides between her and Sam, they were quiet. The only talk was Faith telling the driver her address. Sam stared out the window at the passing streets while Faith held her roughly folded dress under one arm, her purse over the other, her hand settled on the Bible wrapped snugly in its blue towel. She stared blankly out the window of the cab, not seeing the world, but instead lost in her own thoughts. She honestly had no idea what to do. She was anxious for life to return back to some semblance of normal. Go back to work, hang out with a friend, spend an evening with her couch and Netflix. She was a homebody, not an adventurer.
The cab came to a stop in front of the apartment building. She handed the driver a twenty and told him to keep the change. They got out of the cab and up the front walk into the lobby, Faith leading the way while Sam followed close behind. His eyes darted around, making note of the security cameras placed throughout the lobby and near the elevators. Faith pressed the up arrow, a hollow sounding beep announced the elevators arrival and the doors slid open. She got in the car with Sam and poked the button labeled five. Sam watched the numbers climb, all while glancing at Faith and her purse where the object of his desire was kept. Faith strode quickly out of the elevator the second the doors slid open, tired of feeling Sam's gaze on her and on her things. She maneuvered down the hallway lined with doors until finally reaching hers. She put the key in the lock on the doorknob when Sam quickly placed his hand over hers.
“Let me check it out first,” He said.
“Trust me, it's fine,” She assured him.
“Just let me do this, alright?”
Faith stepped back and allowed Sam to go in ahead of her. He walked into the apartment and realized quickly that hiding in here just wasn't possible. Faith's home consisted of a bathroom, half a kitchen and one large room that wasn't much bigger than the prison cell that he had spent the better part of a decade occupying. It had all the normal necessities, couch, bed, coffee table and such and even Sam had to admit that it looked quite homey despite its small size. Sam peeked into the bathroom, checking behind the dotted shower curtain quickly and continued into the large room. He stood in the middle of it, doing a full 360, feeling like a moron now for his insistence on playing bodyguard.
“Satisfied?” Faith asked, leaning against the doorway leading into her room.
Sam looked around, he knew he looked like an absolute fool and hated it. He quickly opened up one of the dresser drawers, glanced around its contents quickly and closed it. “Now I am,” he said with a chuckle and a shit-eating grin on his face. The fact that it just happened to be Faith's underwear drawer eluded neither him nor her.
She let out a snort and dropped her dress in a heap on the side of the couch. She made a beeline for the dresser, grabbing clothes from the second drawer and headed towards the bathroom, stopping briefly in front of the coffee table. She picked up the small glass ashtray that sat there and flipped it at Sam.
“Here,” She said as she tossed it lightly at him. He turned just quick enough to catch it, saving him a direct hit to the dangly bits.
“Thanks but uh, ran out of smokes last night,” He said, setting the ashtray down on the windowsill.
“Check the computer desk drawer, There should be a full pack in there. Don't worry, they aren't menthol,” Faith called over her shoulder as she headed towards the bathroom.
“I thought you didn't smoke,” Sam questioned as he opened the drawer next to him and took out a full pack of cigarettes.
“I don't but my friends do. Be out in a minute,” She said, closing the door to the bathroom behind her. Sam opened the pack and stuck a cigarette in his mouth. He tucked the pack in his jacket pocket. Finders keepers and all, he thought. He flicked open his lighter, lit his smoke and slid the large window open a crack. He had always tried to be a considerate smoker even before the world seemed to clamp down on it. With people almost making it seem damn near illegal, finding a considerate non-smoker like Faith was absolutely rare. What non-smoker keeps an ashtray and an extra pack of smokes around for friends? Sam questioned as he inhaled. Taking in the flavor of stale tobacco, he grimaced, holding back a cough. Between the stale cigarettes and the pristine condition of the ashtray, it was evident that whatever friends of hers that smoked hadn't been around in a while. Faith opened the heavy bathroom door and emerged looking very relaxed in a pair of jeans and a green plaid camp shirt over a black tank top. The end of her glasses were clamped between her teeth as she headed toward her little striped loveseat she used as a couch. Faith plopped down, tucking her feet under her as she finished putting her hair up in a sloppy ponytail.
“So much better,” she said with a sigh, sliding the glasses onto her face. She pulled the fancy purse out from beside her, unclasped it and placed the towel wrapped Bible from inside it on the coffee table in front of her. She leaned against the arm of the couch, her arms crossed over her chest. She stared at the book intently, like an art critic staring at a fine painting trying to form an opinion. Sam stared at it as well, their trains of thought however significantly different from each other.
“What do you think, Salvation Army or Goodwill?” Faith asked.
“Jesus Christ. You can't seriously be considering donating this,” Sam said, frustration seeping through the words.
“And I will say it again, for the hundredth time, what am I gonna do with it?” Her own frustration matching his.
“And what are they gonna do with it?” He asked, stubbing out his cigarette. “You donate it to a museum, it ends up sitting in a glass case being stared at by 8 th graders for the next hundred years. You keep it and you use it, who knows what you can find.”
“I told you, I don't care about the money.” She sat up straight, arms still crossed and head high, waiting for the argument that had erupted last night to continue. Sam strode across the room and sat down next to Faith on the little couch, arms resting on his knees.
“Faith,” Sam started, a solemn, sincere tone to his voice, “I never thought I'd be saying this, forget about the money. Think about the adventure. Finding something that hasn't been seen or touched in decades. Something that the world had given up on but because of you, you get to show it to the world again.”
Sam pulled the pirate coin out of his pocket, holding it up to Faith.
“You see this? Hidden for centuries.” He flipped the coin to her, “And I was the one that uncovered it. You can't beat that rush, Faith. That book?” Sam pointed to the Bible on the coffee table. “You're the only one that has it, and you can't tell me you weren't goddamn mesmerized when Nathan told you what it was. I was there, I saw your face.
Faith's fingers picked at the dried cuticles on her thumb as she held the coin in her palm. A nervous habit she picked up as a teenager and never managed to shake. She really couldn't deny Sam's claim. It was true, the thought of a real piece of important history in her hands excited and energized her in ways she hadn't felt in years and the damn coin in her hand only seemed to amplify the feeling.
“Alright, let me ask you this, can you live with yourself if you don't find out why your mother had this? Personally, I couldn't do it. It took thirty years and two continents to get answers, but I got em cause I couldn't deal with not knowing,” He said, surprised at his own admission of truth. Sam had never told anyone that before. As a general rule, it was easier to admit to greed than unfinished mommy issues.
Faith's looked at Sam, searching for any hint of a lie, a fib hiding in those hazel eyes just to play on her emotional side. The longer she stared at them, the more she came up empty and realized what he was saying was the truth.
“You only have to go over two states. C'mon, who doesn't like a road trip?” Sam asked lastly, every last card in his hand now played to try and persuade her, short of kidnapping.
Faith stared at the book blankly, her thoughts tumbling backward into her memories. She used to love taking road trips with her mom. Back in the days when gas was cheap, driving around, getting lost and singing at the top of their lungs. All the problems were left in the apartment and nothing mattered but the gas gauge and the adventure in front of them. It was always the two of them against the world, taking everything the universe felt the need to throw at them. But on those trips, the music, the speed and the vibrations of the road made them absolutely fearless. It had been a long time since she'd had one of those road trips.
“Can I see your phone?” Faith asked quietly. Sam fished it out of his pocket and handed it to her. She dialed Nathan's number from the contact list.
I'm so sorry Ma.
Faith put the phone to her ear, listening to the ringing until Nathan picked up on the other end.
“Hey Nathan, It's Faith,” she paused, Sam stared at her solemnly, completely certain that she was going to fold.
I hate that I have to take this trip without you.
“About how long does it take to get to Springfield from here?” After a moment she held the phone against her chest, “Think you can teach me treasure hunting 101 in nine and a half hours?” she asked a pleasantly surprised Sam, flipping his coin back to him. He caught it easily.
“I think I can do that.”
Sam smiled as he watched the coin flip end over end between his fingers. He wondered what other surprises Faith and this book had in store for him.

COFFEE TALK with Dauzat St. Marie
Q: Everyone in the music industry has a few favorite “industry moments;” the time you had dinner with your favorite artist or worked with someone you respected and/or admired… what are a few of your favorite industry moments?
Mat - One of my favorite “industry moments” that most people don’t know about is when I got to jam some of my favorite songs with Ozzy Osbourne and band when I auditioned for the guitar seat in the Ozzy’s band. We sounded GREAT! And EXTREMELY LOUD!!! 🔈 🔈 🔈
Heather - When we toured with Pat Benatar, every night during her set, she would make it a point to call us out by name and commend us on our talents (and adorableness). And every night, I felt like I was floating above the ground to have such an incredible musician give us accolades.
Q: If you were to make a playlist of the songs that are part of your DNA, the comfort food that you keep coming back to, that never fail to move and inspire you, what would those tracks be?
Mat - Ugh. How does one decide??? I’ll give you a list for today, but that would likely change should you ask me again tomorrow. Here goes (in no certain order):
“Photographs and Memories” by Jim Croce. A masterful song by one of the true masters of song.
“More Than A Feeling” by Boston. It has everything - great guitar riffs, guitar solo harmonies, vocal hooks, LOADS of vocal harmonies, and plenty of opportunities for me to show off the fact that I can hit some seriously high notes!
“One More Try” by George Michael. Devastatingly powerful vocal performance.
“Tiny Dancer” by Elton John. And if you ask me again tomorrow, I’ll give you another Elton song. And again the day after.
“No More Tears” by Ozzy Osbourne. Signature bass riff, crushing guitar riffs, crushing guitar tone, stellar vocal melody and performance, and one of my favorite guitar solos of all time.
“Tom Sawyer” by Rush. I know that one might seem like a weird choice, but anytime that song comes on my radio, I turn the volume ALL THE WAY UP and I get out my air drumsticks and GO TO TOWN... and all becomes right with the world.
“Rain When I Die” by Alice In Chains. This is another band where you can ask me again tomorrow and I might give you another song. SO MANY GREAT SONGS!
“The Sweetness” by Jimmy Eat World. An ultimate singalong song... whether you actually know the correct lyrics or NOT! It just oozes with hooky poppy sugary goodness.
“Red Rain” by Peter Gabriel. Or really any song on “So.”
“Like Suicide” by Soundgarden. Dark and moody, but delicious.
“Buttercup” by Brad. So moody and powerful.
“Say Hello 2 Heaven” by Temple Of The Dog.
Heather - My playlist changes with my moods or with the weather. Lol But I’ll narrow down some of the songs that I get lost in when I’m playing them:
“Isis” by Bob Dylan - The live versions of this song are fantastic! And the attitude and delivery of the vocal is perfect.
“Unbound” by Ásgeir - His voice is so smooth, and his songs are equally beautiful in English and his native Icelandic tongue.
“Hold On” by flor - It’s hard to pick one song from this band, but this song is how I discovered flor. It’s perfect for a road trip - or dancing while doing laundry!
“Hurricane” by MS MR - Such dark attitude and a KILLER vocal!
“Fears” by MTNS - I love how this song builds up tension musically with an almost lazy vocal - until it just blossoms on the chorus.
“Nola 1” and “Hallucinations” by PVRIS - Lynn Gunn is one of my favorite vocalists. She can go from singing to shredding in a beat, and the blend of genres keeps the band interesting. You never know what you’re gonna get with PVRIS - but it’s gonna be great!
“Somebody Else” by The 1975 - What can I say? This is one of those songs that’s a crystalized gem of perfection.
“Lifespan” by Vultures - Another band with a powerful female vocal! Their songs are so much fun to sing. I just wish the band had stuck together to make more music.
“Come Rain or Shine” by James Booker - This guy felt every note he sang and played! His music was coming from every cell in his body.
“I.Y.H.” by Elliot Root - Woah, such a dark and bittersweet song! And that smokey vocal just cuts through that painful emotion-scape.
“Looking Too Closely” by Fink - Watch YouTube videos of Fink performing live. Fin always sounds like an album - he’s just sooooo good!
“If I Get High” by Nothing But Thieves - I love this band’s soaring vocals and creative guitar lines. This song, especially, is so much fun to sing!
Q: Are there any artists that never really made it, that you’ve discovered, that you wish people could hear and embrace.
Mat - I’m not sure what the threshold is for having “made it” any more, but one artist who I’d love to see get a little more mainstream attention is Martin Sexton. I met Martin many, many years ago when we played the ASCAP Sundance Festival showcase (I was playing with Schuyler Fisk at the time). I was blown away. Schuyler and I met up with him again some years later while we were on tour and saw him in his element in front of a quite sizable crowd... OUTSTANDING! His live show is raw and powerful. Go to one of his live shows if you ever get a chance.
Heather - Like Mat, many of the “smaller” bands I listen to may feel that they HAVE, indeed, “made it.” Success is different for all of us. But I do love discovering new artists. Many of the bands on my setlist above are all doing their thing to varying degrees of audience reach, and I would love for y’all to check out the ones you haven’t heard before. A few others are Aquilo and Colouring.
Q: Who was your mentor? Why?
Mat - I’ve been blessed with many mentors on my journey through life and music, and I draw wisdom and inspiration from all. Traveling with Ozzy Osbourne and family when I was touring with Kelly was awesome because Ozz would drop all kinds of wisdom nuggets daily.... and plenty of WILD stories as well. Touring with Schuyler Fisk afforded me time with her mother Sissy Spacek, who imparted a lot of wisdom... and a LOT of laughs! Touring with Rick Springfield has certainly shaped us as we get to travel and work with one of the savviest and hardest-working guys in the biz... and he is always so supportive and helpful to our efforts.
Though you can probably spot an obvious theme of mentorship by folks we tour with, the biggest mentor in my life is one we don’t tour with... my father. His influence inspires so many aspects of my life, and my awe of his strong work ethic keeps me driven every day.
Heather - I was fortunate to have many people take me under their wing and guide me through the twists and turns of my life… and I’m grateful for each of them. If I had to choose one, I’d say it is my Grandmother. She taught me how to face adversity with a smile - understanding that these are the moments that shape us. And at 98, she still faces life with fearlessness and excitement.
Q: What’s the best part of what you do?
Heather - Mat and I put quite a bit of thought and heart into our lyrics, so it always means a great deal when people share their experiences about how our songs have impacted their lives. I feel that we’re all on this earth to make connections, and if our voices and our art creates a deep and lasting impression on someone’s soul - then we’re doing something right!
Mat - ☝🏻☝🏻what SHE said!

About me
I was tagged by the lovely and brilliant @gladlybeyondanyxperience. Thank you, my friend.
Rules: Answer 30 questions and tag 20 people.
Nickname(s): Only my husband refers to me as anything apart from my real name. People called me Bananarama in university though (for reasons I’d rather not divulge).
Gender: Female
Sign: Aquarius
Height: 5′3" (and a half)
Time: 5:15 p.m.
Birthday: Late Jan.
Favorite Bands: Oh, I’m old. See the ‘60s (parental influence) for The Beatles, The Doors, CCR, and more. See the ‘80s (Depeche Mode, Blondie, The Smiths) for the rest. However, my daughter has a couple of Twenty One Pilots albums that I quite like. (Yay, albums from this decade!)
Solo Artists: I’m notorious for my love of ‘80s one-hit wonders. If you won’t dance to Rick Springfield’s Jessie’s Girl at my parties, you are basically dead to me. However, I did stumble into a Scott Helman performance recently and loved him!
Song stuck in my head: I was just listening to Lovefool by The Cardigans. Oddly enough, the first XF fan video I ever saw was to this song and had a lot of adorable Mulder clips.
Last show I watched: Maybe The X-Files? My kids are still on holiday so we’ve been watching a lot of movies and not many shows. My daughter and I caught the original Flatliners last night.
When did I create this blog: I had to go back and check! April 2015. (Oh my god, I can’t believe I made it this long.)
What do I post: Mostly X-Files, but also about Gillian and her projects. Occasionally about my dog and random silliness.
What did I last Google: Some work related nonsense that would bore y’all to tears.
Other blogs: That I run? Oh please. I don’t even have time for this one.
Do I get asks: Yes, daily. I’m not sure why - maybe people just feel sorry for me because I’m ancient by Tumblr standards. In all seriousness though, I enjoy asks very much and am grateful to be asked my opinion.
Why did I choose this URL: I used to just go by “Cate” back in the old days. I left the fandom for about 10 years and when I came back I was nostalgic for the old fandom days, my old fandom board, my old fandom friends.
Following: 89. I tend to feel overwhelmed if my dash is too busy.
Followers: A few thousand, which is amazing considering how many people I’ve pissed off. ;) Anyway, people here tend to equate influence with follower number, but I personally don’t think that’s the case.
Average hours of sleep: 5. Perimenopause is wrecking havoc.
Lucky number: N/A. I’m not superstitious like that.
Instrument: Oh god, I’m the least musical person in the world. I love to sing (badly) and dance (also badly...think Gillian at The Cutting Room).
What am I wearing?: Tank top, leggings. Huge-ass reading socks. (Leave me alone, it’s Saturday.)
Dream job: Gillian’s publicist. Well, it’s both a dream and nightmare, based on the day.
Favorite Food: Generally anything in the Thai or Indian neighbourhood. I love spice and I love curries. Lobster is also high on the chart, but only Atlantic lobster (I’m not snobby about much foodwise - except lobster).
Last book I read: A Beautiful, Terrible Thing
3 favorite fandoms: I’m fandom monogamous. The X-Files is my one and only.
Tagging @scienceandmysticism, @aloysiavirgata, @perplexistan and @imasquint if you are in the mood for some self-sharing and haven’t done this one lately.

The Sword of Swift Justice
Thoughts on episode eight, ‘Winter of Our Discontent’:
This episode was like the ghost of predictions past for me…
The promo picture called Cheyenne Jackson’s character ‘Dr. Rudy Vincent’, but his name in the show is Dr. Vincent Anderson. Surely this was done to preserve the surprise reveal. Right away, we find out that Vincent is innocent of all but being a lousy shrink. But even then- wait. Is he a lousy shrink? He’s exasperated by Ally, to be sure- but so were we. So was Ivy, for all that she had other issues as well. Rosie, beaming, said that Vincent cured her and he responded by praising the work she’d put in. I thought he had to be loading Kai up on Adderall if nothing else, but nope. Kai steals prescription pads from him. Vincent’s eventual fate stings because it comes right when he’s trying to atone for mistakes he is just realizing he made. I reasoned early on that Vincent might not actually be involved in the cult, but I kind of assumed I was overthinking the whole thing. Nope again. Although… there was something a little creepy about the description of “pinky power” (which sounds even sillier than pinky promise), in my opinion. At any rate- RIP, Vincent.
I guess Bebe Babbitt… went missing? I don’t know, but the ladies of the cult are still pissed about being pushed aside. It’s gotten worse, actually, because now they’re stuck cooking for and serving Kai’s army of blueshirt drones. Ivy mentions The Handmaid’s Tale, which I’ll get back to later, and Beverly relates how Kai is manipulating the city council into going along with his decisions. The bit about the gated community is decent class-war commentary. Then it’s time for story time with Winter.
How did Kai-That-Was become the Kai we know? I think it was after the trailer’s release that I called Kai a manipulative whackjob with a messiah complex. But then back in ‘11/9′, we were given the impression of relative- if perhaps dreary- normalcy until Ms. Anderson commits a murder-suicide. This definitely effects him. A mutual of mine (@loonyloomis) pointed out that this was when Kai stopped cutting his hair- Adam Sheppard tease!- and he later gets into peddling fraudulent prescriptions. But he seems to bounce back for the most part, despite living in a house with two rotting corpses. Then the two younger Anderson siblings go to Judgment House on a lark, which Winter presents as the defining turning point in Kai’s life. Symbolically, it makes sense. In a twisted parody of a church, a horror *house of judgment*, Kai is stripped down to his essence- and found wanting. His first instinct upon realizing that Pastor Charles is torturing and killing people is to rescue them, which he does while Winter runs to save herself. This is Kai at his most genuinely heroic. He saved four people, including Winter, from terrible torment and death- not to mention any other victims Pastor Charles would have found. Now just take a minute to imagine how differently things might have gone if Kai had done as the female victim suggested and called the police. But he didn’t, because the better angel of his nature fails. Instead of shining a light on a great evil, he becomes it. He denies Pastor Charles’ victims the justice they choose to do as Winter suggests and kills him, becoming a killer. This- not his parents’ death- is the crack in Kai’s soul, the fissure in his mind. Everything since has been psychodramatic fallout and Kai bringing others down with him. He’s trying to convince himself and everyone around him that he’s on the rise when he is in free-fall.
I’m not sure how prevalent they are overall, but (fake!) Judgment Houses do definitely exist in the South. I specifically remember going to one that was split between heaven and hell. Everyone kept wandering back to hell because the heaven side- white sheets with scripture written all over them- was boring. Parts of Judgment House reminded me of ‘Se7en’, specifically Sloth. That’s undoubtedly deliberate, especially since Winter already name-dropped Fincher last episode. And randomly, AHS co-creator Brad Falchuk dates Gwyneth Paltrow. Others have mentioned similarities to the ‘Saw’ series, but I’ve never seen any of those. Rick Springfield was fine, but Pastor Charles would have been a nice little role for Denis O’Hare.
Anyway. Winter wants to try to reach Kai, because she believes that can happen. They’re all members of a murderous clown cult, but what do I know? Ivy and Beverly agree to give her some time. Winter and Kai meet, and we learn that Kai definitely knows how Harrison died and doesn’t care. They do a pinky power session and shit gets strange fast. Kai has decided, apropos of nothing, that they need to have a messiah baby. And for whatever reason, Winter has to be its mother. Logically, one’s mind goes to incest. But no- it’s going to be so much weirder than that! Kai says they’re going to have a threesome with Detective Samuels but somehow Winter will remain pure. At first I thought maybe Kai was just looking for an excuse to have sex with Samuels, but later events in the episode turned that idea on its head. Winter eventually calls the whole thing off because it gets to be too much nonsense for her. (I mean, it wasn’t until then?) Between the robes and the song and the behavior of all involved, it was undoubtedly one of the most bizarre AHS scenes ever- cringy as hell, but also hysterical and… oddly fitting in a satirical way? In the popular imagination and in reality (to a lesser degree), cult practices are often oddly sexual, cobbled together, and perversions of religious rituals. Kai has a degree in religious studies. Is he trying to sanctify what he and the cult are doing? His opening salvo during pinky power might lead us to believe he’s simply testing Winter, but I don’t know. The whole scenario also evokes ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, a modern classic about women’s disenfranchisement via reproductive slavery.
As for Winter, what’s her deal? Why was she trolling “social justice warriors” with Kai? Sibling bonding? She seemed to be enjoying it. Was she perhaps also changed by Judgment House? Was her response to the trauma a hard left turn? But she swears to love and be loyal to her brother, who is politically on the opposite shore. In ‘11/9′, she told Ivy she wants to serve someone powerful. It’s all rather baffling. Regardless, Winter wearing a dunce cap and throwing recycling on the side of the road because Kai “doesn’t believe in global warming” is one of the funniest damn things I’ve seen all season. The following confrontation between her and Samuels- especially the line about losing when Hillary did- might suggest she would get more radical and truly join forces with the other women, but that’s not what happens. Instead, she… sells Beverly out? What? In turn, Beverly reads both Kai and Winter for filth.
We *finally* get a little backstory on Samuels, which I’ve been waiting for despite not caring about the character. I suspected he was a Nazi type way back in ‘Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark’, and I was right. He was also a dirty cop pre-cult, although it’s a little rich for Winter to accuse him of being a criminal when- once again- they’re both members of a *murderous clown cult*. He life is complicated by being gay and internalizing homophobia. Kai sees this and immediately goes to work, feeding Samuels a line of misogynistic bullshit and then fucking him for good measure. Kai seems particularly into it as well, which is interesting. I rather wonder how Evan would describe his character’s sexuality. So did Samuels just not care about Harrison at all? It didn’t seem like their involvement was only physical. I specifically remember them cuddling on the couch and discussing their favorite housewives. Eh. RIP, Samuels.
Finally, we have Ally to consider. We see her holding one of Oz’s toy trucks before inviting Kai over to rat Vincent out. She claims to be afraid of nothing now, and that’s after Kai has already noted a change in her. Their little exchange about Manwich is cute, as is her deliberately calling Speed Wagon ‘Aerosmith’. (Seriously, where did the drones’ names come from?) In the final scene, we see that that some drones have taken to wearing the masks of fallen clowns. Ally, staring Ivy down, is wearing the mask of Kai’s former “favorite”- the only one who impressed him. That’s no coincidence. Rise, Ally.
